General A review of the literature has revealed important areas which should be investigated during the field work. Of the utmost importance is the safety of mine personnel. Should a phase-to-ground fault occur on a shovel or other piece of equipment, current may return to the substation through the machine's contact surface with the mine floor, thereby raising the frame above ground potential and posing a shock hazard to anyone who touches the equipment. If the frame-to-earth resistance is very low, then no dangerous potentials will be developed, and a basis for elimination of the ground conductors from trailing cables could be postulated. However, should the contact resistance be high, then lethal voltages could be present on the machine frame. In this instance, low-resistance ground conductors in the trailing cable would be a necessity. Therefore, field tests should include measurements of the earth resistance of electrically operated portable or mobile mining equipment such as shovels, draglines, and drills. When the electrical distribution system is subject to lightning discharges, the grounding grid must safely carry to earth and dissipate enormous current surges. It is essential that the grounding grid have a low value of earth resistance, because any potential developed across the grounding grid as a result of current flow will appear on the frames of all machinery connected to the grid. This report deals with the creation of an efficient method to determine if command, control, communication and monitoring (3cm) equipment in coal, metal and non-metal mines is susceptible to Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) from the Medium Frequency (MF) radio communications system. A qualitative and quantitative RFT test plan was developed for in-mine and laboratory evaluation of the equipment. The laboratory testing was accomplished using the TEM Test Chamber. Detailed information on the Test Plan and the TEM Test Chamber is included. During in-mine testing of the MF System some underground equipment malfunctioned when the transmitter's radiating antenna was in close proximity. Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) testing was done on three levels; Component (circuit or box), subsystems and system. Nine tables are included which show the results of testing various equipment for RFI.

Ethical concerns of in-vivo procedures and poor repeatability of non-invasive techniques have been major limitations in estimating vibration-induced spine loads through experiments. The biodynamic models of seated human body exposed to whole-body vibration (WBV) have evolved for defining the frequency-weightings, enhancement of human responses to WBV, and developing anthropodynamic manikins for seating assessment activities. The widely reported mechanical-equivalent models, solely based on through- or to-the-body biodynamic response functions, do not seem to resemble the biomechanical structure and do not yield information on the dynamic loading and deflections of segments of concern, namely the spine. On the other hand, biomechanical models with representative anatomical structure and anthropometry are being attempted to simulate segmental movements and the coupling effects, using Finite elements (FE) or multi-body dynamics (MBD) formalisms, which could provide important insights into the inter-vertebral forces [1]. While the FE models pose considerable complexities primarily related to characteristics of the bio-material properties, the MBD technique with discrete rigid bodies offers the flexibility to create multi-segment models with relative ease and lower computational cost. In this study, a preliminary multibody dynamic model of a seated human body exposed to WBV along the vertical direction is formulated using MSC/ADAMS software. The model validity is demonstrated by comparing selected responses with the available measured data. Methods The seated human is represented by nine rigid body segments, including: head, neck, thoracic and lumbar torso, pelvis, hands and thighs, as shown in Fig. 1. The rigid bodies are coupled through different rotational and translational joints, some of which are force elements to allow vertical translations and sagittal–plane rotations of the segments. The measurements of transmission of vertical vibration through-the-body generally require subjects to voluntarily maintain a vertical head position to reduce head-accelerometer orientation errors. The head–neck–shoulder joint is thus considered to be rigid. The shoulders are assumed to be rigidly attached to the thoracic segment. The torso is made up of three (upper, middle and lower) segments connected by visco-elastic revolute and translational joints to permit relative pitch and vertical motions. The forces and torques generated by the joints are derived assuming linear stiffness and damping properties, which were identified from published studies. The pelvis is connected to the rigid seat by similar elements representing the visco-elastic properties of the buttock tissues. The two thighs are rigidly connected to the pelvis, while the segment masses are chosen from the anthropometric data for the 50th percentile male subject. To test the feasibility of hydraulic borehole mining for the recovery of phosphate ore from the deep, water-saturated deposits of northeastern Florida. Approach Phosphate ore is remotely extracted through a Bureau of Mines-developed hydraulic borehole mining system. Hydraulic borehole mining can remove underground ore deposits that cannot be economically mined by the usual open pit or underground methods. It is environmentally compatible, causing none of the surface disruption or ground water pollution usually associated with other methods of mining. Selectivity of the borehole mining system also allows economical recovery of small or discontinuous ore deposits while minimizing the removal of host rock. The hydraulic borehole mining system has been used successfully in the past to mine uranium ore and oil sands. (For examples of these and other applications of borehole mining see T Technology News Nos. 97, 95, 63, 56, and 48) How it Works A 16-inch-diameter borehole is drilled from the surface down into the buried mineral deposit, and the mining tool is installed. The borehole mining tool consists of a 12-inch-diameter pipe string and accessories capped with a three-passage swivel, and ending with a mining section. The mining section has four slurry inlets and an eductor located near the bottom of the section and a single cutting nozzle located near the top. The tool generates a high velocity water jet that erodes and slurrifies the ore. The slurry is drawn through the inlet into the eductor which lifts it to the surface where it is deposited into a slurry discharge sump. All the support equipment is located and operated on the surface; only the mining tool portion of the system is underground during the recovery operation.

Ground check monitors may be made in several configurations. Each type has unique characteristics and provides different safety attributes when applied to different mine situations. In this paper, the monitor types are discussed in relation to the mine situations. It is shown that the selection of the monitor type can have a significant effect on the safety of the resistance grounded power system. The options are discussed, and the conclusion is drawn that only one monitor configuration can provide maximum safety. Unfortunately no monitors of this configuration are presently available. In addition, when the monitor capabilities and ground wire configurations are considered as a system, it can be shown that certain configurations will lead to maximum safety. "The use of trailing cables on cutting machines, loading machines, and similar electrically operated apparatus is recognized as a necessary adjunct to the economical operation of such units. On the other hand, such cables because of their liability to failure from being run over by cars, locomotives, and other track-operated equipment offer one of the greatest hazards - indeed, probably the worst hazard - met with in the operation and maintenance of permissible equipment. Therefore, the Bureau of Mines is seeking ways of making the use of trailing cables less hazardous.Recently the bureau conducted an extensive investigation of both concentric and duplex rubber-sheathed trailing cables at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station. The results of this investigation were published in two reports.3 4In a larger part of portable motor operations in mines a double-conductor cable can be used. The investigation already mentioned indicated that it is feasible to construct a 2-conductor cable that will stand considerable abuse, such as being run over by loaded cars or light-weight locomotives without producing dangerous arcing in the cable either from grounds or short circuits. There are conditions where more than two conductors are necessary, and in such instances it will probably be necessary to use a cable less resistant to this kind of abuse.Schedule 2C, covering the tests of electric motored equipment, was approved February, 1930. This schedule provides for performance tests on trailing cables as follows;Trailing Cable Performance: The following performance test, optional with the manufacturer, is established for determining the suitability of trailing cables for use on permissible equipment. Trailing cables that pass this test will be especially recommended for this service.The cable will be placed across the two rails of a track and a 4-wheeled 7-ton car will be run over it 50 times. The speed of the car shall be approximately 3-1/2 miles per hour and potential shall be applied to the cable during tests. The cable will be shifted in position after each passage of the car thus giving 100 places over which two wheels have passed. To warrant special recommendation of the Bureau, a cable must neither become short-circuited nor grounded either to the rails or wheels in more than 10 per cent of the 100 places.The Bureau of Mines is prepared to conduct tests as outlined in the foregoing paragraphs to determine the suitability of trailing cables for use on permissible equipment. Application for such tests should be made to the Director, Bureau of Mines, Washington, D. C. Each application should be accompanied by a check for $25.00, made payable to the Treasurer of the United States, to cover the expense of conducting the test on a given size and make of cable."

To determine the relative permeability of the soil a series of percolation tests were performed at the three locations of interest at Lanse, i.e., 3C, 03A and strip bank, and KA and KB at Kato. Soil cores were removed to 2, 8, 16, 24 and 32 inch depths with the thin wall sampler tube, each core separated from the next by about fifteen feet. Then two-foot-long thin-wall tubes were inserted into the 2, 8, and 16 inch deep holes and three-foot long tubes were inserted into the 24 and 36 inch deep holes. Each tube was tamped down about one inch further to assure a bottom seal; the tubes were filled with water and the rate of fall was measured. The test is similar to those done for septic tank percolation studies 6; but is not quantitatively related to Darcy's coefficient of hydraulic conductivity because the water can flow in three dimensions from the bottom of the tube. The measurements are dependent on the length of test, since the rate of fall is a function of the head. Therefore, it should be noted that the 24 and 32 inch deep tubes should give faster percolation rates because of the one foot greater head. At locations 03A and 3C the data show a sharp decrease in percolation at increasing depth, Table XV. However, the percolation at 03A and 32 inch depth is much higher than at 3C (0.2 vs. 0.01 inches/hour); the fragipan layer must be deeper at the 3C location since this area does experience a perched water table. On the strip bank the rates of falling head are randomly variable, appearing to be as much dependent on the particular location of insertion as on depth of placement. For example, water drained from the 16 inch tube as fast as it was added, probably into a sub-surface cavity or crevice. At Kato the tubes were more difficult to place because of interference of tree roots. For this reason 2 inch deep tubes were not inserted. These short tests at Kato were inconclusive, varying extensively when the tubes were moved. Field permeability tests were also performed in two (previously described) eight-inch diameter permeater tubes at Lanse and one at Kato. Because the soil is confined inside the tube, hydraulic conductivity can be calculated according to Darcy's flow equation. The high values reported in Table XVI experienced when the tubes were rewetted from a dry surface condition, enable us to conclude that infiltration is faster than the saturated permeability of the soil. In contrast to the falling head percolation tests, these permeability results do not show a high variation between locations.

The high price of pollucite ore, its limited availability, and the need to provide stack removal of S02 present formidable obstacles to the use of pure cesium as a seeding material in MHD power generation. Cost estimates indicate that mixed potassium-cesium seeding is preferable to the use of either pure cesium or pure potassium. Cheaper electricity and higher open-cycle MHD operating efficiencies result from the use of mixed seed. Savings of $3,000,000 per year in power costs for a 1,000-MWE open-cycle MHD power-plant are envisioned if the mixed seeding technique is adopted.

This investigation is part of the Bureau of Mines research effort directed at advancing mineral technology and minimizing energy requirements for extractive metallurgy. The emplacement of the primary minerals petalite (LiAlSi4010) and spodumene (LiAlSi206) in the lithium pegmatites is examined on the basis of their Gibbs energies of formation determined from lithium metastltcate and oxides, using a series of proposed reactions. The reaction between spodumene, quartz, and petalite (LiAlSi206 + 25i02 [=] LiAlSi4010) apparently does not take place in nature but may be proved experimentally.

The data for Test I describes an underground bituminous coal mine operation in a 48 inch seam, with an estimated production rate of 1,056,000 tons per year. The system includes four continuous mining sections, conveyor belt haulage, and a rail network for supply and personnel transportation. This section illustrates the input data sequence and the various report formats which may be selected for the printing of results. As explained earlier, at the present time, the elements of the Cost Data Library must be read in with the regular data input. Thus, in the input data listing, immediately following the required user input, are cards which contain the inputs of the cost library. Examination of the cost reports indicate the absence of cost values for some categories for which the system would normally be expected to incur costs. This situation has arisen due to the format of the cost data provided in the U. S. Bureau of Mines reports. An example of this is the charge of $20/ton for brattice cloth while no charge is indicated for stoppings. The test report data provided a single figure for ventilation cost without a supplemental breakdown. Thus the cost indicated for brattice cloth is actually the total ventilation cost. These explanations hold true for the data input and output for Test II, Appendix III.

"Coal washing commands the thoughtful attention of a steadily incre in number of people. Clean coal is not merely a luxury but is rapidly becoming a necessity in some industrial operations.Coal seams in the Northeast are rarely free from ""bone"" and shale or clay partings which vary from a fraction of an inch to several feet in thickness. Nearly all of the coal measures are folded and faulted, the coal seams dip at various angles, and in some cases are badly broken. In mining these seams fragments of the roof and floor, as well as partings of impur-ities within the seams, unavoidably become mixed with the coal, so that the raw coal as it comes to the surface often contains as much as 50 per cent, by weight of waste.At the Bureau of Mines experiment station at Seattle, the washing of this coal in order to improve it for commercial use has been studied. Since the process of coal-washing depends upon differences in specific gravity between the clean coal and, its associated impurities, the first problem undertaken was that of determining the specific gravity of the clean coal and of each parting of impurity contained in a large number of representative seams.It was found that the freshly-mined coal is practically saturated with water, this being observed in determining the effect of moisture content upon the specific gravity of the coal particles, selected from samples of coal varying from low-grade subbituminous up to semianthracite, all of which are found in the State of Washington. The specific gravity values determined for the cleanest particles varied from 1.28 to 1.35; in general, the higher the rank of the coal the hither the specific gravity."

The method described may be used to delineate irregularities, inclusions, porosity, or shrink holes in ingots up to 43 inches in length. Rou¬tine testing does not require technical personnel, and the equipment is easily maintained. INTRODUCTION For a number of years, the Northwest Electrodevelopment Laboratory of the Bureau of Mines, Albany, Oreg., under contract with the Atomic Energy Commission and the Naval Reactors Division of the Bureau of Ships, has studied the production of zirconium and has adopted the Kroll magnesium-reduction process3/ as the, most economical means of producing high-purity zirconium sponge in quantities commensurate with demand. Consumable-electrode arc melting4/ provides a practical means of melting the sponge without increasing the impurity content. The ultimate application for which the metal is intended requires that strict specifications be met to insure workability and maintain the nuclear properties and corrosion resistance. The control measures employed to satisfy these specifications include chemical, spectrographic, and metallographic analyses, mechanical and corrosion tests, and ultrasonic inspection of the finished ingot. The primary purpose of ultrasonic inspection is to augment the other control measures by checking the soundness of each ingot leaving the laboratory. An incidental but important function has been the revelation of information leading to better understanding of the arc-melting process. For example, information obtained through ultrasonic inspection relative to the occurrence and distribution of porosity in ingots has resulted in a. modification of melting practices that minimizes the occurrence.

"INTRODUCTIONMine ventilation planning is an engineering design process requiring a substantial amount of qualitative knowledge obtained through experience. A concept for a knowledge-based ventilation expert system was developed by Ramani and Prasad (1987).1 11 An expert system based on the above scheme was conceived with the motivation of providing a tool to facilitate decision making for ventilation engineers in the context of computer assisted ventilation planning. Options for the implementation of the system were then examined and several commercial, personal computer (PC) based shells assessed toward this end. The options considered, the evaluation criteria and procedure arc discussed in Prasad ·and Ramani, (1989).Cll Following the above study, a scheme was developed to represent the components of the expert system.<3> Evaluation of several commercial shells indicated that there was none available which permitted interfacing with a large external algorithmic program. It was therefore decided to develop the KBS in LISP and custom build the necessary interfacing routines to ""hook out• to the network analysis program (NAP). Due to this choice of development strategy, the computer implementation aspects of the KBS arc important as all the interfacing components had to be developed with the basic tools offered by LISP.In this paper, the implementation of the knowledge based system (KBS), in terms of its component, the interfaces among the various components of the KBS and between the KBS and the user arc described. The ventilation KBS consists of an AES (analysis expert system), an IES (interpretation expert system)' and an algorithmic NAP (network analy5is program). The AES analyzes the input to the NAP considering the legal 5tipulations governing the various mine ventilation network parameters and principles of good ventilation, helping the ventilation engineer develop and represent represent the problem for solution by the NAP. The IES diagnoses the output from the NAP in terms of the critical parameters in the context of the given problem. Thi5 loop is continued till a satisfactory salution is obtained. The implementational details of the AES, the IES and the approaches to the validation of the expert system arc also discussed."

"INTRODUCTION Two holes were drilled on the G. S. Stiner zinc prospect, in the Lead Mine Bend area of Union County, Tenn. The holes were drilled in the vicinity of an area of gossan float and were bottomed in the Maynardville formation of the Nolichucky shale. Drilling was started January 24 and completed February 16, 1947. The total footage drilled was 421.2 feet.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Project 984 was set up under the strategic minerals program to make old workings accessible for this sampling program. Actual operations commenced June 1, 1944, and were completed June 30, 1944.The deposit was visited and discussed briefly by Sidney H. Ball 3/ of the Federal Geological Survey in the summer of 1906 and by H. M. The necessity for protection against the hazards of lightning manifests itself from time to time in the mining industry by reason of loss of life, damage to electrical equipment, fires in surface structures at mines, and accidents in the handling and use of explosives. This paper is intended to assemble, correlate, and present some of the salient. points embodied in the available literature on the subject and at the same time give some factual data concerning instances of such loss of, life and damage to property, with special application to the mining industry The annual loss of life and destruction of property by lightning is considerable; the former may be prevented to a limited extent, though use of common sense as to exposure is required and not always followed; the latter can be prevented to a considerable degree. The manufacturers of electrical equipment,, through improved types of lightning arresters,, have done much toward the protection of electrical equipment, with consequent safeguarding of life and of property. Education based on unfortunate experiences has gone far to discourage the handling of explosives and blasting accessories during thunder storms, especially in open pits and quarries, and to a much smaller extent in underground workings. The lowly lightning rod plays an important role in the protection of certain types of buildings (especially isolated buildings), stacks, monuments, and other structures. LIGHTNING PHENOMENA In 1751, Franklin proved that lightning was simply a visible display of electricity - an extended spark; and until a generation ago little had been added to his exposition, to define the various phases of the phenomenon.
