Over the past two decades, there have been significant reductions in industrial exposures to hand-arm vibration, especially when specific tools and work processes have been redesigned to incorporate anti-vibration and ergonomic principles. Nevertheless, Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) remains a significant occupational health problem as disease symptoms continue to occur even when vibration exposure levels believed to incur low risks have been reached2. This inconsistency may be related to the methodology that is typically used to estimate workday vibration exposure levels, involving laboratory and/or very short duration field measurements coupled with estimates of overall eight-hour tool operation times determined from brief observations of tool tasks and/or self-reported surveys. One solution is to use small, commercially-available, personal vibration dosimeters to calculate, record, and display long-duration vector sums and energy equivalents of vibration. However, since these devices are attached to the worker and require tool-mounted accelerometers, they are incompatible with the worker performing normal duties involving putting down or changing tools. In addition, these commercial systems do not allow for the characterization of the transmission of vibration to the hand such as monitoring the mechanical coupling between the hand and the tool handle (e.g., grip forces). O’Boyle and Griffin showed that variations in applied force can alter vibration transmission characteristics by 50% or more indicating that the measurement of grip force is essential for modeling vibration transmissibility and vibration exposures5. In summary, a need exists for the development of a method and device that will more accurately characterize workday-long vibration exposures. Methods A portable, light-weight, Vibration Exposure Monitor (VEM) system was developed to record user-specific tool-operating times, vibrations, and grip forces throughout all, or a representative part, of a workday. It monitors frequency weighted and unweighted accelerations from a palm-mounted uni-axial accelerometer (Model 352C22, PCB Piezotronics, Depew, NY) and calculates exposure levels using the root-mean-square (RMS) and higher power mean values, such as the root-mean-quad (RMQ) and the root-mean-oct (RMO). Grip forces are also monitored using a palm-mounted force sensor (Model 400, Interlink Electronics, Camarillo, CA) from which average grip force levels and exerted grip extrema are calculated. At the core of the VEM system is a commercially available, battery-powered microcomputer (Tattletale, Model 8v2, Onset Computer, Onset, MA) with one megabyte of memory and eight analog channels using 12-bit sampling at a single-channel maximum of 100 kHz. Analog signal processing (i.e., anti-aliasing, with cutoffs at 4 and 1250 Hz, and ISO 5349-13 frequency weighting) is accomplished using custom circuitry that is directly interfaced with the microcomputer. Investigation into the expressions of the field produced by a loop over a conducting half space or in an infinite conducting half space are well documented. Reasonably complex descriptions of the effects of stratification also are reported. However, a model which must contain all of these complexities because of transmission to depths of 15,000 feet and also include the pertibation of the field by a verticle cylindrical steel casing loses its facility in the field or for quick, accurate approximation to field magnitudes and phase. This paper describes the results of two field tests to determine the attenuation and phase versus depth and frequency of an electromagnetic wave (induction field). A simple two-layer model is postulated to predict the magnitude and phase of the induced field which does not require sophisticated computing tools. Correlation of the model with experimental results show agreement of most amplitude measurements to within 3 db and most phase measurements to within five degrees. The tests were conducted in a 7400 foot deep well in Nevada and an 11,000 foot deep well in Wyoming which had conductivities ranging from .0025 mhos/m to .25 mhos/m. The surface transmitting dipole had an area of ~ 10 6 feet squared and constant frequency signals of 1.5 Hz to 20 Hz were transmitted through the earth utilizing less than 65 watts of power. [The meaning of the term "bauxite' has always been somewhat vague and indefinite, and the term has been used in various applications to denote sometimes a rock, sometimes a mineral, but more frequently an ore. It seems logical to think of bauxite as an ore, however, because a very large part (probably at least 85 per cent) of the entire world's production of bauxite is at present being used as a source of aluminum and aluminum chemicals. In the United States there are two districts that, produce bauxite - the Arkansas district and the Alabama-Georgia-Tennessee-Mississippi district. The deposits in Mississippi have been discovered recently and are riot as yet productive but it seems reasonable to consider them as apart of the-district hat includes the deposits of Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee. The, two districts are often referred to as the Arkansas field and the Appalachian field. Of these two the Arkansas field has been by far the largest producer, and at present over 90 per cent of the bauxite production of they United States comes from the Arkansas field. The bauxite industry in the Appalachian field had its beginning in 1889, and since that time the total production of the states of Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee has been, nearly a million tons. The production of bauxite in this field has languished in the last five, or six, years, and In 1927 its production was only about 14,000 tons, according to Harder4. The recent decrease in production is due mainly to the fact that many .of the known deposits of commercial-grade ore have become exhausted. There are, however, considerable quantities of low-grade bauxite in the Appalachian field, but these have not been available because there has been no satisfactory way of concentrating low-grade bauxite. The quantity, of low-grade material in the Appalachian field is probably, fully as large as the tonnage of commercial ore which the field has already produced.]

Improve safety at mineral operations that use cyanide leach solutions to recover precious metals from finely ground ores, Approach Provide an alternative, non-acidic means of cleaning processing systems such as the State-of-Maine filter system, thereby reducing the exposure of workers to toxic hydrogen cyanide gas (HCN), The Problem Many gold and silver mining operations use cyanide solutions to dissolve gold and silver from ores. The precious metals frequently are recovered from pregnant leach solutions by the Merrill-Crowe recovery process, whereby gold and silver is precipitated with zinc dust. When that method is used, suspended particles in the leach solution must be filtered out before zinc precipitation can occur. This filtering is accomplished with small packaged plants, such as the State-of-Maine (SOM) filtering system. Unfortunately, the filters become clogged with calcium carbonate scale after about 2 to 10 days of operation and must be cleaned before further precious metals recovery operations can continue, Cleaning the system is a hazardous task because the acid is not compatible with the alkaline cyanide leach solutions, and toxic hydrogen cyanide (HCN) gas may be produced when the acid and solution are mixed. That gas, if breathed or contacted with the skin, can cause cyanosis which may induce nausea and even asphyxia and death. The inputs of capital and labor to support future iron ore production were developed by the Bureau of Mines from projections of iron demand and estimates of capital and labor requirements. Trends in technologic change and the organization of production were analyzed. Labor requirement schedules for iron ore mining and beneficiating were constructed from aggregate inter-temporal trends and 1970 cross-sectional analysis of mines and mills. A sup-ply schedule of the capital requirement for mine-mill-pellet plants was developed from U.S. and Canadian experience. The structure of demand for iron to the year 2000 was examined as well as the availability of resources. Projections of capital and labor requirements to 2000 were constructed under two international patterns of iron ore supply to the United States. The most likely model is for a continuation of the 70 percent United States-30 percent foreign shares, expanding at an average 2.0 percent growth rate to 2000, and supported by a cumulative gross capital investment of $3.8 billion constant 1967 dollars and a labor force in the United States of 29,800 by 2000. The information content of projections is discussed, and the possible effects of international forces on supply are considered. A generalized methodology for estimating capital and labor requirements in other mineral industries also is included.

The metal lithium, its alloys, and its salts are becoming Increasingly important as industrial materials. Lithium metal, because of its great affinity for elements, such as nitrogen, hydrogen, oxygen, sulfur, phosphorus, carbon, and silicon, has become important for a wide variety of uses, ranging from purifying helium gas by removing the nitrogen to scavenging molten metals of undesirable impurities. The excellent fluxing properties of lithium salts have found increasing use in such applications as fluxes for welding aluminum and in lower melting ceramic glazes and coatings. Lithium chloride is one of the most hygroscopic salts known and is widely used as a dehumidifying agent. .About 17 lithium minerals are known. Four of these have commercial importance: Amblygonite, lepidolite, zinnwaldite, and spodumene. Spodumene is the most important source of lithium and lithium salts at present, but sizable deposits of amblygonite occur in the pegmatite area of the Black Hills of South Dakota. The size and nature of these deposits preclude the, possibility of, any assurance of an adequate supply of amblygonite for an operation processing only this mineral. Frequently spodumene and amblygonite occur associated in pegmatite minerals. Preliminary investigations indicate that a simultaneous recovery of spodumene and amblygonite can be made by froth flotation. A single process for treating spodumene and amblygonite or mixtures of thorn, would make possible more use of amblygonite as a source of lithium and obviate the separation of spodumene and amblygonite when they occur together.

Because surface mining removes the original plant cover from the land and exposes the soil, special care is needed. Until the mined land is stabilized by revegetation, snowmelt and rainfall can pick up sediment and erode mined lands much faster than undisturbed areas. Sediment control is an important aspect of protecting the environment during mining and reclamation because without it, large amounts of sediment can clog streams, increase the risk of flooding, damage irrigation systems, harm aquatic habitat, and limit the use of water for other purposes. Stream quality can be affected many miles downstream from the mine. Before SMCRA was implemented many streams were degraded by uncontrolled sediment from mining. Sediment is controlled through careful planning and a design that incorporates a variety of measures that work together to reduce soil erosion at the mine. Disturbed areas are graded, and some areas terraced, to achieve stable slopes, reduce runoff water velocity, increase infiltration, and divert runoff into drainage channels so that it flows away from unvegetated, erodible areas. Grading along the slope contour and scarify in gun vegetated slopes with bulldozer track marks help prevent erosion by slowing down the flow of water. Runoff from haul roads is controlled by culverts and roadside ditches. Sedimentation ponds or other forms of sediment control are required at all mines to minimize the amount of sediment leaving the site.

In Maryland, coal mining is confined to Garrett County and the western portion of Allegany .County. Terrain in both counties is predominately level with rolling hills; state law prohibits surface mining in steep slope areas. The Conemaugh and Allegany geologic formations contain five major minable fields or basins. These include: Upper Youghiogheny, Lower Youghiogheny, Castleman, Upper Potomac, and Georges Creek. Maryland's coal reserves are estimated to exceed one billion tons. Approximately 490 million tons of bituminous coal are considered recoverable using conventional mining methods. After World War 11, deep mining declined in Maryland, and by 1977 surface mining accounted for 91 percent of the total production. Since then, production at underground mines has recovered, accounting for 69 percent of the coal production in 1991. Maryland's permanent regulatory program was fully approved February 18, 1982. Its Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved June 16,1982.

"SUMMARYThe J. D. Price property is in Crittenden County, Ky., about 5-1/2 miles west of Marion. The Levias-Crittenden Springs fault system traverses the property. Mines on 3 miles of the same fault system immediately northeast have produced about 250,000 tons of fluorspar ore. The Keystone property, adjacent on the northeast, has produced about 150,000 tons of ore. 3/About 1934, lessees, sank a shaft upon the Price property to a depth of 111.5 feet and crosscut from the bottom of the shaft to the principal fault. No ore was found. Later, in 1942-43, they explored the same fault by core-drilling, but this project also was unsuccessful in finding ore.The author visited the property in September 1944, and subsequently the Bureau further explored the property by core-drilling three holes. No ore was found.ACKNOWLEGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The Bureau of Mines undertook the development and evaluation of a system to provide a simultaneous, on-line determination of both iron and silica in iron ore beneficiation streams as part of a program to improve the efficiency to mineral separation processes, Californium-252 (252-Cf) was the neutron source used in the system for measuring the amounts of silica and iron in bulk slurries by thermal neutron capture-gamma ray spectra analysis. The theory of thermal neutron capture-gamma ray reactions and their potential application to mineral processing stream analysis is discussed. The prototype system and supporting software developed by the Bureau is described. During the initial phase of the work, both simulated and actual pilot plant slurries were investigated using a 60-to 32-µg 252-Cf neutron source. The percent solids of the slurries was ranged from 2 to 40 percent and the silica and iron content ranged from 1.5 to 83 percent and from 10 to 65 percent, respectively. Accuracy of the determination of the components in the solids was dependent upon the percent solids in the slurry.

A training software package for new mine employees, called Miner Training Simulator (MTS), has been developed by researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. MTS is a computer-based tool that allows a trainee to enter a simulated mine and interact with his/her surroundings in order to learn basic mining concepts, safety procedures, mine layouts, and escape routes. The training simulator software and instructions for its use are described in this report. Also, each mine using the software will have different requirements with regard to safety training. To customize the simulator for these differences, an interpreted scripting language is used to define interactions between the trainee and the virtual mine and objects in it. The scripting language, called Tool Command Language, uses simple commands to control various actions in the simulation, such as sounds, safety messages, hazards, and movement of objects. The basics of the scripting language are described here, along with many examples and instructions for building a script for MTS.

Fires can grow rapidly. Time is the critical element. Prompt detection, timely and accurate warnings to those potentially affected, and a proficient response by underground miners can have a tremendous impact on the social and economic consequence of a small underground fire. Fire preparedness and response have components of technology and people. These components can work synergistically to reduce the time it takes to bring the system back in balance. This report deals with the preparedness of miners to respond to underground mine fires. It is intended to aid the mining industry in understanding the various roles of emergency responders and the training techniques used to increase their skill levels. The report also presents a technology overview to assist in effective response to mine fires.

A simple field test for detecting the presence of germanium in rocks, coals, and flue dust has been developed by the Bureau of Mines. The method consists of dissolving germanium from the samples by either acid or fusion treatment methods, adding a few drops of hematein or phenylfluorone dye, and extracting the resulting colored complex with carbon tetrachloride. INTRODUCTION Germanium is obtained commercially as a byproduct of zinc production, as a coproduct of base-metal refining from germanium-bearing mineral, and as a recovered product from the ash of some coals. The growing use of germanium in the electronics industry has increased demand for this semiconducting metal to the extent that an intensive search for new sources of supply is necessary.

High-grade synthetic rutile has been produced in the laboratory from domestic ilmenite concentrates by a new carbonyl process. The ilmenite was first reduced to convert the iron oxides to metal and then treated at temper-atures over 1000 C in high-pressure carbon monoxide (CO) to convert the iron to the pentacarbonyl. Rapid carbonylation was achieved in the presence of small quantities of selected promoters. Maximum iron removal occurred at temperatures between 110° and 130° C at CO pressures from 1,000 to 1,400 psig. Iron pentacarbonyl appeared as liquid and vapor in the reactor and could be removed by gravity flow and vapor transport. More than 90 pct of the iron was extracted in 2-hr experiments at pressures of 1,000 psig and above. The Ti02 product is porous owing to the removal of the iron, has the rutile crystal structure, and is suitable for chlorination. Waste disposal problems associated with the process would be minimal because the iron pentacarbonyl can be decomposed to produce iron powder or pellets for sale and CO for recycling.

This report describes the development and application of a rail haulage simulator that is readily adaptable for the analysis of a wide variety of operating problems. Various gaming, options have been integrated into the model structure which permit trial and error solutions from a computer terminal prior to capital committment in the actual operation. The high level of information retrieval available allows engineers and managers to develop production data which fit individual needs. In this report, emphasis was placed on the problem of organizing and performing the sequence of operations that are necessary to accomplish a complete mine materials handling simulation. Here, the Rail Haulage Sub-assembly was linked to the Production Sub-system to mine and move coal from seven operating sections to the intermediate and main-line track. The analysis was devoted to the problems associated with how the operating system performs and what alternatives were available to minimize idle times and hence increase productivity. In order to have some objective means of evaluating which of the alter- native methods for production was most appropriate, the choice was to replace the intermediate track with belt conveyors. Since the attempt here was to demonstrate model flexibility and not to establish the goals or trade-offs between computing objectives with which systems judgement must contend, no further alternatives were tried. This is left to management with the data and a problem to solve. Rail haulage simulation is not new, and several, operationally tested models are being used in practice (Bucklen, et. al., 1968).

The Bureau of Mines used sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) tracer gas to evaluate the effectiveness of gob ventilation and/or sealing practices at three coal mines, each having different problems associated with their mined-out areas. The purpose of these ventilation studies was to better understand whether current techniques employed for ventilation or sealing are successful at minimizing the potential for gob fires and explosions. The work performed at each mine is discussed: One is a long-wall operation that uses ventilation to carry off hazardous gases, and two are room-and-pillar operations, each with far different concerns, that seal off the gobs to isolate them from the main mine ventilation. In all cases employment of the Bureau's SF6 tracer gas technique resulted in answers to questions raised by the mine operators concerning the effectiveness of their gob ventilation or sealing practices in preventing mine fires.
