The Bureau of Mines for a number of years bas been conducting an investigation of crude petroleum from producing fields in the United States and the Western Hemisphere and has published a series of reports on these fields. Analyses of crude-oil samples from many oil fields of Oklahoma are given in Bulletin 2915. Analyses of 21 representative crude oils from various producing zones of the Oklahoma City field are given in this report. A close study of the analyses reveals very few differences in the general characteristics and chemical properties of these oils.

"INTRODUCTION The great demand for tungsten incident to the war has led to the exploration of a large number of low-grade tungsten deposits. To properly evaluate the low-grade deposits it is essential to have available a dependable method of analysis applicable to all types of low-grade tungsten ores. Results reported on the tungsten content of the ores have often varied quite widely and have led to confusion. The Bureau of Mines has been requested by Government lending agencies and by companies interested in the production of tungsten to publish a general method for the determination of tungsten in low-grade ores. To meet this need, the Bureau of Mines is herein submitting two methods for analysis that have been proved on a large number of tungsten-bearing ores various types in the Bureau of Mines laboratory in Salt Lake City. Also, a third method was developed that requires no cinchonine and has proved to be applicable on most tungsten ores. The cinchonine method is the generally accepted for analysis of tungsten ores. Very reliable results can be obtained by this method if certain precautions are taken, as outlined in this report."

To identify the most successful methods now in use for controlling respirable dust in longwall mines using double-drum shearers. Approach Conduct dust surveys at six longwall mining sections that use double-drum shearers and are regularly in compliance with the Federal Respirable Dust Standard, to identify effective dust control techniques. The selection of mine sites was based on recommendations provided by the Mine Safety and Health Administration. Instantaneous and short-term gravimetric instrumentation make it possible to isolate longwall dust sources and to determine the effectiveness of dust control techniques. (These procedures were developed by the Bureau of Mines, and are described in detail in Technology News Bulletins 134 and 135.) Production levels, and seam heights at each of the six longwall sections were: 53", 700 tps; 60", 800 tps; 72", 1000 tps; 79", 1500 tps; 84", 2000 tps; 96", 1500 tps. Survey Results Three effective dust control techniques were identified. 1. Shearer Operators on Intake Side of Lead Drum-At all mines surveyed, an important factor in controlling dust exposures at the shearer is the use of a cut ting sequence that allows the shearer operators to work most of the time on the intake air side of the lead drum. The W. E. Dunkle mine, sometimes called the Costello Creek coal mine, is 8 miles N. 20° W. of Colorado Station on the Alaska Railroad. The presence of coal in this area has been known since the district was extensively prospected for gold between 1911 and 1915. At that time, coal from this deposit was used by miners for blacksmithing. The increased demand for coal resulting from government defense projects in Alaska led to exploitation of this deposit in 1941. The inability of Alaska coal mines to supply the quantity of coal required by public and private consumers and by the armed forces in Alaska was responsible for establishment by the Army of the Coal Procurement Section of its Alaska Department. It proposed to investigate the deposits and to expedite production from the Alaskan coal fields. The Bureau of Mines closely cooperated in this program. The quality of the Dunkle coal and the favorable location of the deposit caused it to be one of the properties chosen for investigation under a joint Army-Bureau of Mines-Geological Survey program.

Strontium sulfide and barium sulfide occur as intermediates in commercial treatments of the impure natural sulfates to produce pure strontium and barium chemicals. Thermodynamic considerations involving these sulfides have been hampered by lack of basic data, such as the entropies at 298.15°K. This paper reports the results of heat capacity measurements of strontium sulfide and barium sulfide in the temperature range 50°-298°K. The entropies at 298.15°K. were derived from the heat capacity values. Free energies of formation at 298.15°k. were computed from the entropies and literature values of the heats of formation. Strontium sulfide and barium sulfide are thermo-dynamically less stable than calcium sulfide, but more stable than magnesium sulfide.

"Dedicated to Professor Kurt Leschonski on the occasion of his 60th birthdayAbstractThe kinetics of batch grinding quartz from a feed of 600 by 425 Jim to a product of 80% less than 10 µm have been determined using screening and laser diffractometer sizing for size analysis. The specific rates of breakage decreased by a factor of about three when the material became less than about 100 µm in size, but the primary breakage distribution function also changed to give proponionately more fine material, so that the grinding efficiency expressed as the development of surface area (B.E:T.) per unit of energy input did not decrease. Analysis of the shape of the particles in the 2S x 38 µm size range showed that particles of this size produced by roll crushing or by 8 minutes of grinding of a 42S x 600 µm feed were not different but at long grinding times the particles were rounded. This suggests that the breakage mechanism changes to give more chipping and abrasion and less disintegrative fracture. As the material approached the ultrafine size range it adhered to the mill case and there was no further size reduction. However, a technique for striking the mill case to dislodge the particles was successful in allowing further grinding to 400Jo by weight less than 2 µm.1 IntroductionIt has long been known that it is difficult to accomplish ultrafme grinding in a tumbling ball mill. It has been reported [12, 13] that there is no further size reduction after some hours of grinding cement clinker in laboratory ball mills. Austin and Bagga (1] and Shah and Austin [16] have given an analysis of the kinetics of dry grinding in a laboratory ball mill, introducing the concept of a slowing-down factor K, which is the ratio of the specific rates of breakage at some long time of grinding to the normal specific rates of breakage. They showed that this factor decreased as fine material accumulated in the mill charge. Cottaar and co-workers [8-10] showed that the movement of solid in a dry laboratory ball mill was influenced by the fineness of the solid and by the presence of air, and that evacuation of air from the mill caused particle sedimentation and low rates of breakage.The concept of the slowing-down factor has also been used in wet grinding [17, 18]. At very .high slurry concentrations it appears to be correlated with a steady decrease of mill power caused by the build up of a layer of deposit sticking to the mill case. This reduces the effective mill diameter and, eventually, the balls start to adhere in the layer and centrifuge. A decrease of mill power always indicates less lifting and tumbling of the media and, hence, less breakage. However, slowing-down of breakage rates was also observed at lower slurry concentrations where there was no change in mill power."

The work of the electrical section of the Bureau of Mines may be considered to have had its beginning in April , 1909 , when H. H. Clark was , appointed electrical engineer in the U. S. Geological Survey. The first manuscript prepared by members of this section was Miners Circular 5, which was issued in October , 1911. During each succeeding year additional papers have been published dealing with questions relating to electrical safety. Since 1916 the electrical section has also conducted laboratory investigations on flame safety lamps and gas- detecting devices and has published reports relating thereto . The following selected list of publications covering safety studies and activities of the electrical section has been prepared for the convenience of those who wish to keep themselves advised concerning electrical safety matters . The list includes only such publications as are applicable to present-day prac tices .

Efficient and safe use of mobile roof supports (MRS) depends on the interaction between the MRS and coal strata. Of particular interest to this study are the mechanics of strata deformation as influenced by geologic conditions, pillar extraction methods, and MRS load-bearing capabilities. To provide a better understanding of the mechanics of strata deformation, the authors have collected and reviewed measurements of convergence and stress in one western U.S. mine and have completed pseudo-three-dimensional, boundary-element modeling for two typical pillar-pulling plans. Stress distribution in the mine roof above pairs of MRS’s was calculated to demonstrate how MRS’s contributed to the control of roof block movements. It was shown that overall stress and roof-floor convergence patterns were most influenced by the stiffness of coal-measure rocks and by pillar-pulling sequences and layouts. MRS’s and other support systems play a critical role in controlling the stability of both the immediate roof and the middle roof for a distance of up to 18 m (60ft) above the seam. MRS’s provide unique ground control advantages over other types of secondary support by significantly reducing the time between mining and installation of secondary support. Although MRS’s are similar to posts in stiffness and capacity, they are more effective than posts under static loads because they can yield and still maintain loads at near-peak capacity, whereas posts fail and loose their ability to limit mine roof deformation.

Microflotation and surface chemical studies were conducted on a chromite from the Stillwater Complex in Montana and on some of the minerals usually found to be associated with such chromites. Considering the chromite it was found that aging the ground mineral in air or heating it markedly affected its flotation behavior. Much of the observed effects could be attributed to oxidation reactions involving surface chromium and iron species. Strongly acid pretreating the mineral appeared to reverse such effects. Thus, it can be concluded that the manner in which the mineral (or the ore) is pretreated is of utmost importance in its flotation. Work carried out on associated gangue minerals determined how they are likely to behave in a flotation environment and how certain foreign ions derived from a chromite ore itself can affect their surface characteristics and, thus, presumably also their behavior in a flotation circuit.

Basalt suitable for aggregate and fill is in the WSA but rock of this nature is abundant in the region and closer to potential markets.

An aircraft auxiliary power unit (APU) was used as an exhaust source for evaluation and refinement of sampling and analytical procedures for gas turbine engines. The unit was also used to determine the emission characteristics of APU's in service and to study the effect of fuel composition and combustor design on exhaust emissions. Carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, oxides of nitrogen, hydrocarbons, aldehydes, particulate loading, and odor were measured at engine operating modes representing the duty cycle encountered in airline operation. Analyses showed good repeatability, and adequate sensitivity was attained in these experiments. Smoke opacity measurements were not taken owing to the lack of a high-sensitivity smokemeter. Results showed that the minimum emission levels occurred with the standard combustor and Jet A fuel. Emission rates were highly dependent on test mode, but emission patterns as a function of test mode were similar for all fuels and combustors tested. A comparison of three identical design production combustors showed a variation in average emission rates of less than 5 pct.

In initial attempts to mine taconite by conventional open-pit methods, the material tended to break into tabular blocks that were too large to be handled by conventional shovel dippers and were unsatisfactory in an ordinary crusher feed. A great amount of secondary blasting was necessary, which added considerably to the cost of mining. The Bureau of Mines and others are engaged in studies designed to contribute to the solution of taconite-mining problems. These studies concern problems related to drilling techniques and patterns, types and methods of use of explosives, and other factors relative to effecting maximum fragmentation at minimum cost. This report, is concerned with study of the application of shaped charges in drill holes, the effectiveness of shaped charges as compared to capped charges in secondary blasting, and the merits of different drilling patterns and methods of detonation of conventional-explosive charges. Fragmentation of taconite at or near the surface is controlled or strongly influenced by joint and bedding planes. Since all tests in this study were made in a jointed and bedded area, a definite conclusion as to the relative effect of a shaped charge in a drill hole, as compared to a conventional charge at greater depths and tighter ground, is precluded. However, application of shaped charges in primary blasting of taconite appears to be of no advantage. In secondary blasting of taconite, conventional, capped charges produced better breakage than shaped charges of the designs tested. Based on the results of conventional blasting practice in horizontal-, inclined-, and vertical-hole tests, no better fragmentation is obtained from blasting either horizontal or inclined holes, compared to vertical holes. Holes drilled in staggered parallel rows that intersect both series of joint planes at the greatest possible angle, give maximum breakage compared to rows paral-lel to one of the series of joint planes. Methods of detonation made little difference in breakage; but the milli-delay caps produced the best conditions for moving the broken rocks.

From November 1943 to April 1944, the Bureau of Mines put down 18 churn-drill holes aggregating 2,571 feet of bore in an investigation of the virtually abandoned zinc deposits of the north-central Arkansas district, principally in Marion, Boone, Searcy, and Newton Counties. The ore of this area occurs in flat-lying sedimentaries of the Mississippian and Ordovician ages. Much of the zinc is in the form of carbonate and silicate, although some sulfide has been produced. Preliminary studies resulted in selection for investigation of the Big Hurricane mine in northwest Searcy County, the Spies mine in northeast Newton County, and the Coon Hollow mine in eastern Boone County The comparatively large production of th.ese properties in the past was a factor in the selection. This report describes the work accomplished in the investigation and presents the data obtained.

This Bureau of Mines report describes research on methods of assuring the continued safety of mine electrical power distribution circuits through reliability and quality assessment of the protective devices, innovative inspection techniques for these devices and the circuits themselves, novel applications of trolley line circuit breakers, and computer modeling of distribution systems to determine the proper ratings for cables, power sources, and circuit protective elements. Bureau of Mines engineers examined the chemical and biological treatment of sewage water designed in one case for reuse and in another for subsurface injection. In the first case discussed, approximately 6 million gallons per day of sewage are treated by the activated sludge process followed by tertiary treatment that includes ion exchange. The renovated water is used in the industrial complex. Liquid industrial waste is sent to a waste disposal facility where it is treated for injection into a deep subsurface formation. In the second case, a community of 3,000 people is using a lagoon sewage treatment system followed by subsurface injection of t- treated effluent. Subsurface disposal is used to avoid growth of algae and weeds in a nearby lake to which the treated effluent was originally discharged. The renovation of municipal water for reuse provides a source of water for industries in a semiarid region and may also provide a source for domestic use in densely populated regions where domestic water requirements have priority over industry needs. In addition both waste treatment systems provide examples of the use of subsurface waste disposal to avoid pollution of surface streams.

Experimental determinations were made of the heats of formation at 298.15 ° K of cuprous ferrite and cupric ferrite ; the heat capacity of cuprous ferrite was measured over the temperature range from 50 ° to 298 ° K and the entropy at 298.15 ° K was evaluated ; the heat contents of cuprous ferrite and cupric ferrite above 298.15 ° K were measured to 1,500 ° K and 1,100 ° K , respectively . These thermodynamic values were combined with other pertinent data to obtain heat and free energy of formation values at high temperatures . The stability of the two ferrites with respect to their constituent oxides is discussed . Thermodynamic values are included for the decomposition of cupric ferrite to form cuprous ferrite , magnetite , and oxygen .

This report describes the carbonizing properties of the principal coal beds of Allegheny County, Pa., which rank low in the high-volatile A bituminous classification. Seven coal samples from 3 coal beds were selected for study, as follows: 2 each from the Redstone and Pittsburgh beds and 3 from the Upper Freeport bed. Selection was based on estimated reserves. The samples of Upper Freeport and Pittsburgh coals were satisfactory chemically for producing metallurgical coke. The ash contents of the samples of Redstone coal were moderately high. One of the samples of Redstone coal was high in sulfur content, and it would be difficult to upgrade to meet present metallurgical standards.
