"The realization that fuel costs, high as compared with those enjoyed prior to the war, are apparently permanent, has caused steam power plant operators to apply their best efforts towards improving the fuel economy of their plants.Though they have given much attention to the reduction in combustion losses by improving methods of firing and improved equipment, and to diminishing the heat losses by more care in maintaining clean heating surfaces and tight and adequate baffling, they have almost universally neglected the waste that occurs from discarding unconsumed combustible with the boiler refuse.This loss varies between extremely wide limits, depending on the quality of the coal, the type of plant and the firing practice in general, the higher the ash content of the coal the greater will be the amount of combustible appearing in the refuse, and the losses will be greater as the boilers are driven at higher ratings. The refuse from stoker fired boilers is apt to have a lower aver-eve percentage of combustible than that from hand fired boilers if operated at the same rating, but stoker fired boilers are usually pushed to higher ratings and the combustible in the refuse will run higher.In actual operating practice the amount of unconsumed combustible in the boiler refuse may range from a few percent to as high as forty or fifty percent. In an informal statement one well known combustion engineer estimates that the average amount of combustible in the refuse from a large stoker fired central station boiler plant is about 15 or 20%. Assuming that the coal burned contains 12% of ash, and allowing for flue dust losses, approximately two percent of the coal will be lost through this channel. The operating engineer of one large modern central power plant reports that when burning coal of about the same ash content, the average amount of combustible in the refuse was in the neighborhood of 33%, en tailing a loss of approximately 4% of the heating value of the fuel fired. Where the coal used daily runs up into hundreds of tons, an appreciable economy could be effected by recovering this percentage."

The drilling of horizontal boreholes as a means of degasification in advance of mining has been tried at Jim Walter Resources, Inc., No. 4 Mine. In a joint venture with the U.S. Bureau of Mines, a series of horizontal drainage boreholes have been drilled in the panels of an advancing continuous miner section with impressive results. The combined methane gas production rate has ranged from 205,000 to 680,000 cfd (cubic feet per day} with individual "in-seam" horizontal holes producing up to 332,000 cfd. The methane liberation from the ribs for the entire panel length has decreased from an average of 8.75 cfm (cubic feet per minute) per 100 feet of entry to 4.05 cfm per 100 feet, a 54 per cent reduction. The actual gas concentration as measure at the surface discharge point normally ranges from 85 per cent to 95 per cent methane. As a consequence of the significant reduction in methane liberation rates from the panels of the section, a 50 per cent increase in productivity from the section has been realized.

A statistical technique, useful to analyze assay and other data characterized by location in three dimensions, is described in this Bureau of Mines report. If present, trends in the data are defined for the purposes of improving ore estimation, predicting ore beyond existing workings, and aiding geological interpretation. The technique is to fit linear and quadratic polynomial equations to the data through the statistical method of regression analysis. The fitted linear equations have the geometric form of hyperplanes; the fitted quadratic equations have the geometric form of ellipsoids or elliptic hyperboloids of one or two sheets. To visualize these three-dimensional forms, contour maps of a series of plane sections through the fitted surfaces are plotted. Both the fitting of the polynomial equations and the plotting of the con-tour maps are done by electronic computer to facilitate calculations and to obtain accurate results. Computer programs are described in appendixes. Methods employed are illustrated by an example analysis) based on data from a part of the Fresnillo mine) Zacatecas, Mexico.

This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States was made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. By agreement with the American Petroleum Institute, identification of the items is confidential. .It presents analytical data for 4, 457 samples, representing the products of 92 companies. The samples were collected by companies during June, July, and August 1956, As in previous surveys, the gasolines covered by this survey include those from both large and small suppliers. The data were obtained by laboratories of various refiners, motor manufacturers, and chemical companies and submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. A list of the National Motor Gasoline Survey reports published during the past 10 years is on page 5.

In the fall of 1953 the Philippine Bureau of Mines, under a Foreign Operations Administration Technical Assistance (FOA-TA) program, began a systematic investigation of the nickel content of the well-known Surigao laterite areas, on the island of Nonoc northeast of Mindanao, to determine the occurrence, distribution, and grade of nickel contained in the laterite and in the subjacent serpentine. At the same time, a technical review of the possibility of producing commercial ferronickel from the nickeliferous materials in the Philippine Islands was made, and a smelting process was suggested. The proposed process would be similar to that developed by the Federal Bureau of Mines for the reduction of the nickeliferous serpentine occurring in the Nickel Mountain ?deposit at Riddle, Oreg. The potential avail-ability of electric power from the Maria Cristina facilities at 3 mils per kw.-hr. would enhance the economic possibility of this program. Development of an economically feasible process for recovering nickel from the nickeliferous serpentines and laterites should lead to the establishment of a new industry in the Philippines, to the development of a source of nickel in the Far East, of which at present there is none, and to partial solution of the problem of supplying the free world with nickel. Enough preliminary reconnaissance had been completed by early 1954 to permit sampling of the deposit for metallurgical investigations. The FOA then requested the Federal Bureau of Mines Northwest Electrodevelopment Laboratory, Albany, Oreg., to conduct preliminary electric smelting studies on nickeliferous serpentine and laterite samples.

In support of research on forming ceramics from mining and processing wastes, the Bureau of Mines tested various commercial refractories to evaluate their resistance to melts of these wastes. Sixteen refractories of various types were exposed in slag erosion tests to two siliceous waste melts with Si02/CaO ratios of 4.0 and 2.2, The extent and nature of slag attack were then determined for each refractory. The nature of slag attack was investigated through scanning electron micrographs and microprobe elemental distributions. The refractories that performed best in resisting attack by the melts were high-alumina types, and of the refractories tested, the most resistant was a 90-pct-Al203, 10-pct-Cr203 refractory.

Control dust generated during undercutting in salt mines without causing ore-solubility problems that result from excessive water use. Approach A foam generator was developed to provide a reliable foam to control dust on cutting machines used in mining water-soluble ores. The system was designed to keep total foaming agent/water mixture flowrates below the flow-rates characteristic of water-only systems. The foam generator consists of a reservoir to hold the premixed agent and water, a metering pump, and a small compressor to aerate the mixture. The system is compatible with all cutting machines. How It Works One of the current wet-bar techniques, the through-the-bar trickle system, pumps water through a pipe in the cut-ting bar to its tip placing the water behind the kerf. If the pipe conducted foam effectively the foam would be released in the kerf where it would mix with the cuttings and the dust produced by the chain. For improved foam delivery, however, it is recommended that the pipe be replaced with an external channel welded along the top of the bar. This provides excellent dust control while avoiding the accumulation of copious quantities of foam in the heading. The system is very simple. As a direct result of the second World War, consumption of nickel in the United States has increased to such an extent that it has been considered timely to investigate undeveloped deposits of the nickel minerals. Funds were made available to the Bureau of lines in 1941 to investigate the extent, occurrence, and quality of nickel ores in the Mirror Harbor area. The Federal Geological Survey mapped' and studied the area during the summer of 1941 and Robert S. Sanford, an engineer of the Bureau of lines, made a preliminary examination in June 1942. A contract for drilling the deposits under the direction of the author was let in July 1942.

Techniques for recovering scandium from uranium plant iron sludges and from wolframite concentrates are described. The best procedure found comprised (1) dissolution with sulfuric acid, (2) preliminary concentration by solvent extraction with a primary alkyl amine, (3) further enrichment and purification by a combination of ion exchange, solvent extraction, chemical precipitation, and calcination. Recovery of scandium from these raw materials, which contained 0.058 and 0.14 percent scandium, ranged from 83 to 90 percent in products analyzing 99.6 to 99.9 percent scandium oxide.

The Bureau of Mines performed research on a fluid-bed magnetic roasting process for nonmagnetic taconites that utilizes low-rank coals and lignites as reductants and fuels. Roasting tests on a Michigan nonmagnetic taconite were conducted at 600° to 725° C with lignite or subbituminous coal as reductants. Partial combustion of the reductant reduced the amount of heat externally applied to the reactor to maintain the desired reactor temperature. Cleaned, dried reactor top gases were recycled to recover a portion of the reducing potential in these gases without adversely affecting concentrate grade and iron recovery. Highest iron recoveries for magnetic concentrates were obtained at a roast temperature of 650° C with lignite and at a roast temperature of 725° C with subbituminous coal. Magnetic concentrates were obtained that were comparable with commercial concentrates.

Granites are classed as igneous rooks; they have been formed by the solidification of rook magmas or Solutions from deep within the earth. It is an almost invariable law of nature that mamas which cool quickly form fine-brained or glassy rocks, while those that cool slowly are completely crystallized and are coarser-grained. Granites, being of the latter class, are regarded as having attained their solid form at considerable depth below the surface under conditions of high temperature and pressure. The constituent minerals crystallized out slowly, the crystals interlocking with one another. The great depth of overlying rocks that must have been present when crystallization took place has been removed by erosion over large areas on the surface of the earth in consequence of which granites appear at or near the surface in many localities.

This circular deals primarily with the various methods of longwall mining used in some mines in certain districts of the Middle Western States. In some instances underground methods were considered comprehensively, and in others only the actual methods of mining and face advance were noted. Results obtained by the mines in output per man were compared only on the basis of an operating day, since idle time and number of men employed would not, be comparable due to the great difference between mines in different districts. Man-hours per ton per operating day are noted in a general way. Material and power costs are not included. ACKNOWLEDGMENT The information used in preparing this paper was obtained through the courtesy and cooperation of the presidents and other officials of the comparnies operating the mines described. The approval of the executive of each property was obtained for publishing this manuscript, and the accuracy was checked.

This report contains Bureau of Mines routine analyses of 492 samples of crude petroleum from 470 United States oilfields, each of which produced 2,500 barrels a day or more during at least 1 of the years 1946-56. The fields are listed alphabetically by State and field names in table 1, with information on the geographical and geological sources of the samples. Table 2 summarizes the general characteristics of the crude oils and analytical and computed data determined from the analyses. A previous report 4 contains similar analyses of 283 important United States oilfields; some of them are repeated in this report. Many fields for which analyses previously were published are represented by new analyses, which include data not previously reported. Refractive index nu and specific dispersion, ng minus nD divided by the density, for some of the distillate fractions are included in the analyses of 316 of the crude-oil samples. This is the first Bureau of Mines report on analysis of crude oils to contain such data, and their use in calculating hydrocarbon-type composition of the fractions is explained.

The vibration and impact environment for crew members on locomotives has been investigated in a series of studies conducted by Exponent Failure Analysis Associates (Exponent) beginning in 1990. Locomotive cab vibration and impact levels were measured on a variety of locomotive models operating over many different track sections across the Union Pacific, Burlington Northern Santa Fe, CSX, Norfolk Southern, and CONRAIL systems. The comfort and health implications of exposure to the measured locomotive vibration levels were evaluated by comparison with the human vibration exposure boundaries given in the International Standards Organization (ISO) standard 2631-1:1997, the British Standard 6841:1987, European Union (EU) Directive 2002/44/EC, measurements made by Exponent on various commercial and recreational vehicles, and vibration exposure measurement data found in the literature. Methods Initially, vibration levels experienced by locomotive crews were measured and recorded at incremental speeds covering the range of normal train operation. In 2003, a method of measuring the vibration exposure continuously by means of a digital recorder was developed, allowing the vibration level over the entire run or crew shift to be analyzed. For each seating location measured, acceleration was recorded on the seat surface beneath the ischial tuberosities (pelvis) of the seated crew member and on the cab floor directly under the seat. At each of the locations, triaxial accelerometers were used to measure the vibration along the longitudinal, lateral, and vertical axes. Since the vibration environment varies throughout the route, and locomotive vibration levels have been found to be primarily speed dependent, a speed sensor was used to continuously measure the speed of the train. To evaluate the recorded vibrations levels, the data was divided into two-minute segments, which were each processed per the 1997 ISO standard for weighted RMS vibration levels and Vibration Dose Values (VDV). Additionally, PSDs and 1/3 Octave RMS values were calculated to determine the frequency content of the vibration. For each two-minute segment, the average speed of the locomotive was calculated to allow for correlation with the recorded vibration exposure values. The resulting exposure values for the entire run were calculated by combining the data from all of the two-minute segments. Since introducing the continuous method of recording acceleration, 23 seating locations have been recorded on 11 locomotives traveling 11 different routes across various parts of the United States. One of the routes was a shift of ‘yard work’, traveling back and forth in a rail yard coupling train cars together. The Bureau of Mines has successfully developed and tested a machine for spraying sealant onto coal mine roof and ribs. Dry material is transported pneumatically to a water-adding nozzle designed to provide dust-free spraying while being nonplugging and self-cleaning. The machine is self-cleaning, 35 inches in height, and capable of applying l/2-inch-thick coatings at over 1,000 ft2/hr.

Continuous-circuit flotation and batch-scale precipitation tests were made by the Bureau of Nines to determine rejection of carbon and recovery of fluorine and aluminum compounds from aluminum reduction plant residues, About 40 to 60 pounds each of aluminum fluoride and cryolite are lost for each ton of aluminum produced. Gasoline and turpentine were satisfactory for floating carbon from both fresh water and saturated solution systems. Soluble fluorine and aluminum compounds were recovered by precipitation with sodium aluminate and carbon dioxide. Over 99 percent of the carbon was removed by flotation. Fluorine and aluminum recoveries up to 77 and 63 percent, respectively, were obtained in a combined precipitate and nonfloat product, In the fresh water system the combined product was mostly cryolite with some gibbsite. In the saturated solution system the product was mostly sodium fluoride, some cryolite, and minor amounts of gibbsite.

Since 198 1, Federal mining law has required every miner working in underground coal mines to have a self-contained, self-rescuer (SCSR) available for use in emergencies. Some miners that have escaped from fires using SCSR's have reported that they had to remove their mouthpiece to talk during escape, thus compromising the protection afforded by the SCSR. If miners are in thick smoke during an escape, they may have trouble if they become separated from their group. The visibility can be so poor that separation can occur at very short distances. To address this problem, two-way, FM radios were built into the SCSR to improve the ability to communicate should the miners be separated over relatively short distances. The SCSR prototypes built and used in testing included both two-way radios and improved mouthpieces. Comparison studies were conducted using combinations of the new and old mouthpieces, and trials using the radio or not using the radio. Subjective judgments indicate that communication ability was significantly improved using the prototype devices. Communication problems have been encountered with teams using standard voice- powered communications systems. Mine rescue teams perform rescue and recovery work under extremely hazardous conditions, life lines are a standard part of mine rescue team equipment. Leaky feeder and quasi-leaky feeder life line communications systems provide significant improvements over standard systems. These improved systems allow all members of the team to communicate with each other and their base of operations. These innovations will significantly enhance the safety of mine rescue operations.

Cooperation between the United States Bureau of Mines and the Safety in Mines Research Board of Great Britain, continuous since 1924, has made possible this and other papers on safety subjects. Grateful acknowledgment is made to representatives of the Safety in Mines Research Board of the Mines Department for their assistance in arranging visits to several mine-safety stations, and to F. H. Wynne, Deputy Chief Inspector of Mines, Great Britain, for arranging visits to mines in Great Britain, Belgium, France, and Germany. During the summer of 1927 the writer had the privilege of visiting the mine-safety testing stations in Great Britain, Belgium, Germany, and France, in the order named. All of these countries have large coal mines, many of which are rated as gassy. Therefore, when the installation of electrical equipment is contemplated, each of these countries is confronted with the same safety problem as in the United States - the development of electrical equipment that will not ignite gassy mine atmospheres, should such atmospheres through neglect or accident surround the equipment. The means used by those countries in safeguarding gassy mines should therefore be of general interest to safety engineers in American coal mines, and it is proposed to give a brief survey for each of the four countries mentioned. The first of these surveys will cover conditions in Great Britain.

Studies are reported on the structure of coal and coke with the graphical , statistical densimetric method based on the relation between the molecular volume per carbon atom ( M / C ) and the atomic hydrogen - carbon ratio ( H / C ) . Previous work , mostly from chemical and physical investigations , is critically reviewed . Difficulties in evaluating the ring increment are demonstrated for coal and coke for the statistical densimetric method based on the additivity of atomic volumes of constituent elements . A new diagram is presented for the graphical method . Methods are introduced for correcting M /C and H/C for the presence of minor constituents in coal and coke . With the graphical method , the fractions of aromatic carbon atoms in the total carbon atoms are estimated for a coal , a resin , and 5 petrographic components ; the types of condensed structure in the fundamental units of molecules are discussed for these substances , 28 coals , and 6 " average " cokes at 500 ° to 1,000 ° C. It is also shown that the number of rings in the fundamental units of coal generally increases with increasing rank and that of coke , with increasing carbonization temperature .

This report summarizes the incidents that preceded the December 9, 1970, propane-air explosion in Port Hudson, Mo., and then attempts to establish the nature of the explosion from the ensuing events. Special emphasis is given to possible ignition sources, the distribution of flammable vapors, and the analysis of blast damage. Both near-and far-field damage indicated that this explosion may be attributed to the detonation of propane in air with an energy release equivalent to that from about 50 tons of detonating TNT.
