This Bureau of Mines report presents the design for a commercial-sized flue gas desulfurization (FGD) demonstration plant that uses the citrate process. The goal of the Bureau's citrate process is to minimize the undesirable environmental impacts of industrial plants emitting SO2-bearing gas. The FGD plant is located at the George F. Weaton powerplant, Monaca, Pa. Construction was completed in April 1979 and will be followed by preliminary testing and a 1-year testing and evaluation program. Design capacity of the FGD plant is 156,000 scfm of 0.2-volume-percent-SO2 flue gas yielding about 16 tons of sulfur per day. The plant is intended to (1) clean fly ash, SO2, and Cl- from the gas while cooling the gas in a venturi scrubber, (2) absorb SO2 from the gas using 1,200 gpm of a countercurrent-flowing citric acid-sodium citrate-sodium thiosulfate solution, (3) react the absorbed SO2 in two 13,000-gal stirred closed vessels with added H2S, thus precipitating elemental sulfur and regenerating the citrate solution for recycle, and (4) recover the sulfur from the slurry by air flotation, followed by melting in a heat exchanger and separation from the occluded citrate solution in a sulfur decanter at 35 psi and 135° C.

The Alma, Degraff and other mines controlled by the Mon-Ark Mining Co. comprise one of the more important groups of zinc-lead mines in Christian County, Mo. The mines were first operated in .1857 and produced more than 5 million pounds of lead from rich, shallow ore deposits. Recent exploration and development led to the discovery of zinc sulfide ore at a depth of 165 to 214 feet in the northern part of the Alma mine. After examination of these mines in September 1942 by Bureau of Mines engineers, investigation of the extension -of the Alma mine and of the depth of mineralization at the other mines appeared justified in order to encourage the production of additional zinc and lead for war purposes. Twenty-nine churn-drill holes totaling 6.463 feet of bore were completed by the. Bureau from September 1943 to January 1944.

This report on the properties of burner-fuel oils produced during 1956 was issued under a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, at the request of the Oil-Heat Institute of America and the petroleum industry. This survey is the second for this type of fuel, the first being made in 1955. 2/ The surveys are conducted to provide information on the characteristics of burner-fuel oils now manufactured for sale. They are similar in pattern to the diesel-fuel surveys, conducted since 1950, 3/ and are not intended to conflict with but rather to supplement them. The importance of fuel oil has resulted in the need for more information by the petroleum industry, manufacturers of heating appliances, and consumers regarding the types and qualities of the fuels currently being marketed. Samples of burner-fuel oil typical of their manufacture during the early part of 1956 were analyzed by the refiners in accordance with instructions from the subcommittee on fuel surveys of the Automotive Research Committee of the American Petroleum Institute, Results of the analyses were transmitted to the Bureau of Mines where the data were studied and compiled as shown in the tables of this report.

A mobile vacuum sweeper to remove loose coal and coal dust from underground coal mine workings was designed, built, tested, and evaluated. The design was based on an extensive test program. Pick up and conveying rates vs. air volumes, velocities, and nozzle shapes were determined for coal rubble in a laboratory pneumatic handling system. A gas/solids separation system was developed and tested in the laboratory capable of separating the solids loading from the vacuum system air stream to the very high degree required to preclude degradation of the ambient (mine) air. Two designs were made, one for belt conveyor and one for general district cleanup. The belt cleanup machine was chosen for test and demonstrated in an underground coal mine performing cleanup work in belt haulageways and on ribs.

Ten years ago there was no general , country-wide service for the systematic training of miners in matters relating to safety . A beginning only had been made at a few scattered points . Under the old conditions each man was left largely to look out for himself in meeting the hazards of his day's work, and the foreman , shift bosses , and superintendents chiefly relied upon improvision when major accidents occurred . So long as the mines were small and the workers highly intelligent and well trained in routine mining methods , and when too , the pressure for output had not yet speeded up industry to the extent it has since those days , there was something to be said for this lais- sez faire attitude . When , however , the rapid expansion of industry lead to the introduction of new and little trained labor and to units of production of greatly increased size , the natural dangers of mining were greatly intensified . An accident in a small mine affects only a few; the same accident in a large mine , unless proper precautions have been taken , may cost the lives of many . The public does not generally recognize that the greatly increased outputs of the mines , of coal mines in particular , have been in recent years , obtained from substantially the same number of miners as ten years ago but with a personnel not nearly so well trained in mining . It is inevitable under : such conditions that more care must be devoted to avoiding accidents and much more elaborate preparations made for meeting them . In the years immediately preceding the establishment of the Bureau of Mines this speeding up of industry , change in the character of mine labor , and increasing hazard had all begun to be felt . Immediately prior to the organization of the Bureau of Mines , public attention had been drawn to a series of disastrous coal-mine explosions , to the increasing frequency of these disasters , and to the terrible loss of human life . resulting therefrom. One of the first problems , therefore ; confronting the Bureau was clearly that of finding methods of reducing the number of such disasters and lessening the severity of those that continued to occur . Toward this object were immediately directed the energies not only of the Bureau of Mines but also those of State mine inspectors , mine operators and various other agencies , all of whom were urged to cooperate in this great humanitarian work. The results of this work naturally cannot be measured by figures only . Work for increasing the health , safety , comfort , and happiness of human beings may not be gaged with mathematical precision . But certain features of this work as revealed by the record from year to year are of much interest . ”

Approximately 6,000 coal mines are operated in the United States. All of them have in some degree the elements that are likely to contribute to an explosion, hence it is surprising that explosion disasters are not more frequent and that many mines have been operated for years and finally worked out and abandoned without experiencing an explosion. The absence of coal-mine explosions does not always indicate that effective efforts have been made to prevent them but rather that the nine has been fortunate in that the combination of circumstances necessary to cause an explosion has not existed. In view of present knowledge of the methods of preventing explosions, disasters are inexcusable and discredit the mining industry. The methods of preventing mine explosions are known to experienced, well-informed persons engaged in coal mining, yet despite this knowledge far to many coal-mine operators continue to use practices and methods that they should know have resulted in numerous explosions. Moreover, many mine workers persist in following past procedure irrespective of consequences and in breaking safety rules or indulging in practices almost certain eventually to result in disaster. Continued failure to apply known common-sense methods of accident and explosion prevention unquestionably will cell for ultimate enforcement of law.

In the normal operation of mines, the aggregate effect of many seemingly minor op rations may be very important as respects economy and safety. Anion: these operations is the method employed in coupling and uncoupling mine cars. For economic reasons the equipment in mines has not been protected as well as railroad equipment. It is pertinent that haulage accidents rank second in severity among mine accidents, and that manual coupling of cars has been one of the most frequent causes of such accidents. One study4/ revealed that coupling was responsible for about 20 percent of haulage accidents underground. A review of early conditions on steam railroads, which were responsible for the introduction of safer methods of coupling cars, indicates how conditions in might be improved. THE STORY OF RAILROAD COUPLING As any considerable improvement in mine-car coupling probably will follow lines somewhat similar to those that brought order out of chaos for the railroads, it seems appropriate to review briefly the steps taken to improve railroad coupling from the days of link and pin couplings of various types to the adoption of the standard ?M.C.E? automatic coupler.

This investigation was undertaken to assess the feasibility of processing an extensive deposit of iron ore near Palisades, Eureka County, Nev., previously penalized for high phosphorus content. The experiments described indicate a satisfactory accomplishment of objective. Chemical treatment will permit a high-phosphorus iron ore to be used. Leaching with acid solution effectively lowers the phosphorus content with a [gligible] loss of iron. The use of hydrochloric acid is preferred because [ ] does not contaminate the ore and the cost is lower. Minus-1/2-inch ore was satisfactorily leached in 24 hours, minus-1/4-inch ore, in 8 hours, and minus-10-mesh ore, in 3 hours. About 40 pounds of acid per ton of ore was consumed in each instance.

The cheapest method of handling gravel in placer mining operations is by hydraulic mining . In working gravel deposits by hydraulic mining , it is essential that an abundant supply of water under sufficient head can be economically developed and that there is sufficient grade for sluice boxes and for disposal of the tailing . Without dumping facilities , simple hydraulic mining is an impossibility . The cost of hydraulic mining may range from 2 cents a yard under favorable condıtions to 12 or even 20 cents under less favorable conditions and to 35 cents or more a yard in Alaska , according to conditions of operation , and if frozen gravel is encountered . When it is necessary to elevate gravel , the costs may exceed 60 cents a cubic yard . When the natural conditions do not permit of hydraulic pining proper , other methods of elevating the grade are employed , some of which are described below . Bucket dredging has replaced hydraulic mining in importance in California and other states where hydraulic mining was once extensively carried on , and is by far the cheapest method of elevating gravel when mechanical methods are required and the physical conditions are suitable for dredging . Dredging costs vary greatly under the different conditions encountered , and the total amount of gold to be recovered must of course be enough to warrant the cost of a dredge installation . A complete list of permissible mine equipment, tested and approved by the Bureau of Mines previous to January 1, 1947, was published as Information Circular 7432.2/ A list of permissible mine equipment tested and approved by the Bureau of Mines during the calendar years 1947, 1948, and 1949 was published as Information Circular 7569. The present list supplements Information Circulars 7432 and 7569 and includes all of 'the equipment approved during the calendar year 1950. Information Circular 7465, which included a list of permissible mine equipment tested and approved by the Bureau of Mines during the calendar year 1947 therefore is superseded.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) is conducting research to reduce the noise exposures of roof bolting machine operators and to prevent additional cases of Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) thru the development of engineering noise controls. This paper describes and evaluates an engineering noise control for the roof bolting machine, namely the collapsible drill steel enclosure. The results of the evaluation demonstrated that using the collapsible drill steel enclosure provided a 7 dB(A) reduction in sound pressure level at the operator?s position of a roof bolting machine.

Methane-air mixtures can ignite as a result of sparking or rubbing of materials, particularly by impact involving light alloys and rusted steel where an exothermic thermite reaction can occur. This report reviews the published literature and describes a new method utilized by the Bureau of Mines for studying the processes occurring during collisions of light metals with rusted steels. The method involves measuring the spectra of sparks and explosions in methane-air mixtures using a photodiode array. Initial results obtained using magnesium and aluminum alloy 6061-T651 projectiles striking rusted steel are reported. These results indicate that the continuous parts of the spectra show a larger intensity for incendive sparks compared with nonincendive sparks, with the largest relative change in the higher energy, ultraviolet region. An unexpected shift of the intensity maximum for the continuous parts of the spectra towards the infrared region was observed for the more incendive sparks. Evaluation of rusted steel samples with electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectrography, and Auger electron spectroscopy after they had been impacted by aluminum alloys indicated that aluminum was transferred to the steel in the form of islands that became larger as a function of increasing projectile velocity.

"5.1 IntroductionTraditional impactors do not offer much size resolution for submicrometer particles; typically their finest size cut is around 0.4 µ.m. Yet for many aerosol applications it is useful to be able to size segregate aerosols in the size range below 0.4 µ.m. Diesel emissions, welding fumes, cigarette smokes and photochemically generated smog aerosols typically exhibit mass median diameters between 0.1 and 0.6 µ.m. When sampling these aerosols with a traditional impactor, fifty percent or more of the aerosol mass can penetrate the final impactor stage. Allhough the material can still be collected on a backup filter, the filter gives no size resolution. As a result, the investigator has no size information on a substantial portion of the sample. One needs a sampler that size-segregates the majority of the aerosol mass. A lower size cut of 0.1 µ.m or less is required for most combustion smokes and smog aerosol s.To obtain smaller cutpoints two types of impactors have been developed, namely low-pressure impactors and micro-orifice impactors. Both instruments can provide cutpoints as small as 0.05 µ.m. Low-pressure impactors were introduced more than twenty years ago (Stem et al., 1962), and a variety of these samplers are in use today. Micro-orifice impactors have been developed at the University of Minnesota within the last five years (Marple et al., 1981 ). To date theirs are the only examples of these instruments in use.5.2 Operating PrinciplesThe low-pressure and micro-orifice impactors use two different approaches to achieve their very small particle-size cuts. Low pressure impactors resemble ordinary impactors, but are operated at reduced pressures of 5-40 kPa (0.05 - 0.4 atm). They take advantage of the decreased aerodynamic drag on particles that occurs when the mean free path in the air is as large or larger than the particle diameter. Micro-orifice impactors operate at near atmospheric pressure, but employ very small orifices, 40 µ.m to 200 µ.m in diameter. The streamlines of the air impinging upon the impaction plate have correspondingly smaller radii of curvature; the air is accelerated more quickly, making it more difficult for the particles to follow. To provide the U.S. mining and energy industries with information in the selection of seismic detectors for high-resolution applications, the Bureau of Mines evaluated 35 velocity detectors (geophones) and 9 accelerometers. It was found that velocity detectors with natural frequencies from 10 to 100 Hz were effective for seismic studies in the 5-to 600-Hz spectrum and that accelerometers were most effective in the 100-to 1,000-Hz range. Although the accelerometers described in this report performed about equally with the better velocity detectors tested, the accelerometers showed higher output voltage levels at higher frequencies, which is an advantage. It is important that a seismic detector and its intended purpose be matched properly to achieve the intended results in high-resolution applications. There are many factors that could affect proper matching, thus careful selection of the best detector for a particular application must be exercised.

A laboratory investigation was conducted to determine the applicability of the thermal oil-recovery method as a means of increasing ultimate oil recovery in the Appalachian region. The primary objective was to establish self-sustained combustion in consolidated and unconsolidated sand test assemblies saturated with various amounts of Pennsylvania Grade crude oil and synthetic brine. Tests using blocks of sandstone were unsuccessful because of sealing problems and fracturing of the rock due to thermal stresses. A combustion wave of about 700° F was propagated through the sand-oil-water packs in the linear tube tests. The high air flux used resulted in high oil consumption and rapid movement of the combustion wave through the tubes. Analytical tests on the sand pack showed that sufficient fuel was deposited during the linear tube experiments for a self-sustained combustion wave.

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of the impurities, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon, and iron (in low percentages) on the mechanical properties of electrolytic titanium. The strength and hardness of binary Ti-O, Ti-N, and Ti-C alloys are linear functions of alloy content in the composition range investigated. Compared to oxygen and carbon, nitro-gen is the most effective strengthener and hardener, followed by oxygen, then carbon. When the carbon concentration is above 0.10 percent, carbides are present, and strength and hardness are relatively unchanged. For equivalent hardness levels, Ti-Fe alloys are stronger than binary titanium alloys containing oxygen, nitrogen, or carbon. However, the strengthening is related to the presence of transformed beta in the structure.

A half-ton experimental coke oven was installed at the Southern Experiment Station, Tuscaloosa, Ala., in 1948. Designated as the Tuscaloosa oven, this unit features a 17-inch carbonizing chamber, globar heating elements, and silica-brick walls designed to simulate as closely as possible the carbonizing conditions for commercial, slot-type ovens. The reasons for constructing an oven of this Size, the details of the design, and the operating characteristics of the oven have been given in previous publications.3/4 The present report deals with the reproducibility of test-oven data and the effects of variations in flue temperature on the physical properties of the cokes produced. Also included are the results of 2,400° carbonizing tests for several coals and coal blends not included in the earlier reports.

The first steps in combating a dust problem are to take dust samples to pinpoint the source, check the ventilation system, and check the dust collector. If the ventilation system and dust collector are operating properly, then other dust controls such as water sprays and conveyor belt scrapers must be upgraded. For tunnels in the design stage, recommended air quantities are provided. FINDING THE DUST SOURCE AND LOOKING FOR VENTILATION MALFUNCTIONS [The first steps in fighting a dust problem are to take dust samples to pinpoint the source, check the ventilation system, and check the dust collector. Without knowing the exact source, efforts to reduce dust are hit-and-miss (mostly miss).] Taking samples to pinpoint the dust source. In tunnels with high levels of airborne dust, the first task is to pinpoint where the dust enters the airstream. Most dust originates from rock breakage at the tunnel face, but the location where this dust enters the airstream can vary. Dust can leak from behind the TBM face shield, from gaps in the ventilation duct, or from a mal-functioning dust collector. It can be entrained into the air from the muck on a moving conveyor belt. It can even be shaken loose from the underside of the belt as it passes over the idlers. As a start, to locate the dust source, dust samples and air quantity measurements should be taken at the following locations:

A study of ion-exchange resin crosslinkage and eluant flow rate, resin-bed shape, and addition of separating ions to feed stock was undertaken to determine their effect on the separation efficiency of ion-exchange on bastna-site-rare-earth elements. Results show that 12-percent divinylbenzene (DVB) crosslinkage resin is detrimental to separation efficiency at flow rates over 2 to 5 ml./min./sq. cm.; whereas, separation with 4-percent DVB crosslinkage resin is relatively unaffected by flow rates between 2 and 10 m1./min./sq.cm.
