"A search for manganese ore by core-drill exploration was carried out by the Bureau of Mines in the Philipsburg mining district in Granite County, Mont., in 1939 and 1940. This work was based on detailed studies of the manganese ore bodies of the district previously made by the Geological Survey.In 1949 further search for manganese in the district was deemed advisable. Diamond drilling was begun the following year as a joint program by the Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines with the primary purposes of probing ore-leasing structures and extending the limits of known ore bodies. A secondary objective was to test a geologic theory based on a new conception of manganese-ore localization. The exploration targets were designated and the drilling results interpreted by the Geological Survey, and the Bureau of Mines was responsible for the drilling, sampling, and core handling. Improved drilling equipment and methods were utilized in an effort to obtain better core recoveries than resulted from the earlier drilling campaign.The Philipsburg mining district, Granite County, Mont., is 27 miles south of Drurrnnond, about 45 miles airline northwest of Butte, and 1 mile east of Philipsburg. During the course of the investigation patented lode-mining claims owned by the American Machine & Metals, Inc., the Contact Mines, Inc., and the Moorlight Mining Co. were diamond drilled.The district has been an important source of domestic manganese dioxide ore since local recognition of the mineral's importance during World War I. Peak annual output in 1918 of about 127,000 tons of manganese ore was utilized principally by the steel industry. A small but relatively steady output has persisted to the present to satisfy demands by battery manufacturers for battery-grade manganese dioxide.The known manganese deposits of the district are in sedimentary rocks of Paleozoic age. These rocks lie along a north-trending anticline traversed by a series of east-west tension veins. The east flank of the anticline terminates at a steep-dipping fault contact against a small granodiorite batholith.Replacement deposits of manganese oxides and carbonates occur locally in or closely associated with tension veins cutting calcareous rocks, or adjacent to the intrusive. Rhodochrosite has been a common accessory mineral in deposits valuable chiefly for lead, zinc, and silver. Some of the replacement deposits characteristically are irr2gular in outline, whereas others have fairly regular walls marking the limits of favorable beds."

Freezing to dewater typical Florida phosphate rock slime as demonstrated in laboratory tests appeared to have potential commercial use because of indicated moderate energy requirements, good compaction of dewatered solids, and effective recovery of usable water. After freezing, thawing, decanting, and filtering, batch freezing of gallon-size 13.7 percent solids slime samples yielded 42 percent solids products. Cationic amine, used as a process additive, yielded 46.8 percent solids product with significant filter area reduction. Semicontinuous 8 stage freezing tests also produced thickened slimes. Cooling and freezing 13.7 percent solids slime from 30° to minus 10° C required removal of 183 Btu per pound of slime; Carnot cycle calculation indicated that the theoretical minimum energy to transfer this heat was 27.8 Btu per pound. To produce 1 ton of 44 percent solids slime from 13.7 percent sol-ids slime, the calculated theoretical energy required for cooling and freezing was 52.3 kilowatt-hours. During the research heat capacity and heat of fusion data were determined for the slime at various percent solids.

Measurements and analyses were conducted of whole-body vibration aboard seven commercially available passenger and/or recreational vehicles: sedan; sport-utility vehicle (SUV); pickup truck; moving truck; motorcycle; all-terrain vehicle (ATV); and boat. The purpose of the testing was to measure and assess whole-body vibration exposure in a range of typical vehicle environments in order to gain understanding of typical exposure levels characteristic of activities of daily living. Vehicle models tested (and model year) were: Ford Taurus (1995); Jeep Cherokee Sport (2000); Toyota Tundra SR5 (2002); Ford F-350 (1997); Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Classic (2004); Yamaha Kodiak 400 4x4; and Steiger Craft Model 21 Montauk. All vehicles were tested with their standard factory-installed seats and were operated under a range of normal operating conditions and speeds typical of intended vehicle use. Methods The measurement, processing, analysis, and exposure assessment methods follow the guidance of generally accepted, national and international consensus standards relevant to the evaluation of whole-body vibration, including ISO 2631-1 [1] and ANSI S3.18 [2]. Seats were instrumented with low-mass triaxial accelerometers mounted in seat pads. Accelerometers used in the test are specified to have flat frequency response over the frequency range of 0.5 to 80 Hz, and all accelerometers were recently calibrated traceable to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Seat pads were installed following guidance in the relevant standards [1, 2], with sensitive axes of the accelerometers following the standard coordinate system with respect to the seated occupant. (The x-axis represents fore-aft motion; the y-axis represents side-to-side motion; and the z-axis represents vertical motion with respect to the occupant.) Vibration data processing and analysis, including filtering, sampling, frequency-weighting, averaging, summation, and determination of basic and additional metrics followed procedures in the relevant standards [1, 2]. Digitized time series data were acquired and stored using a PC-based data acquisition system. Whole-body vibration exposure analyses were conducted via post-processing. During data processing, recorded periods of seat acceleration that were identified and verified as resulting from occupant-induced motion rather than vehicle motion were excluded prior to exposure analysis. During the course of an investigation by the Bureau of Mines into the causes, behavior, end control of anthracite-line fires, it was observed that the carbon monoxide disappeared from a scaled fire area much more rapidly than could be explained oil the basis of leakage of gases. Two suggestions were offered for this high rate of disappearance; (1) That the carbon monoxide was oxidized at temperatures below 150° C, by either the anthracite or its ash (tests on many anthracites have shown that at temperatures above 150° C carbon monoxide is liberated in the oxidation products when air is passed through it); (2) that the carbon monoxide was oxidized by micro-organisms present in the sealed area.

In 1939, the author made a survey of relative gravity in the Mediterranean-basin, 41° 35,5' to 41° 56.3' northern latitude and 0° 10,3' to 0° 28' longitude, referred to Mt. Mario. Ten stations were covered; 25 other stations had been occupied in the vicinity of Rome and in Albanian mountains during previous years. The new measurements revealed gravity anomalies ranging within the following limits: (1) With a free-air reduction, between + 29 and + 120 mgl., average + 60 mgl.; and (2) with a Bouguer reduction, between + 22 and + 87 mgl., average + 41.5 mgl. - V. Solvent extraction has become important in recent years as a unit process in extractive metallurgy. The flexibility and simplicity of the technique have attracted widespread attention, and numerous papers describing actual and projected metallurgical applications have been published. However, differences in terminology, procedure, objectives, and standards, as reflected in reports by different operators and investigators, have sometimes made appraisals and comparisons difficult. Consequently, a need appeared for n series of basic reports on the subject. This Bureau of Mines Information Circular is the first of such a series. It deals with the status of solvent extraction in metallurgy, as well as with the rudiments and terminology of the unit operation. In analytical chemistry, extraction of molecular species from aqueous media by immiscible organic solvents has been used for many years to separate and determine chemical elements (61).4 Complex chlorides of iron and other metals are readily soluble in ethers and ketones, as are the nitrates of uranium and thorium. Most metals are extractable as complex salts of some organic reagent, such as dithizone, 8-hydroxyquinoline, or cupferron.

The Blue Joint Mtn. RARE II area may contain barite resources. One claim, the Woods Creek Barite No. 1, contains two veins of barite of drilling mud quality. The quantity of barite present could not be determined due to limited surface exposures. Sections 1, 2, 11 and 12 of T. 2 S., R. 23 W. in the study area are classified by the U.S. Geological Survey as prospectively valuable for geothermal energy resources. These sections border Blue Joint Creek Hot Springs, which are outside the study area.

A study was made by the Bureau of Mines of the penetration of selected granular materials in an unconfined state by wedge-shaped tools having dimensions comparable with the dimensions of the particles composing the materials. The output force for larger particles fluctuated radically. A custom-designed integrator was used to obtain work as a function of depth of penetration in the form of smooth curves. The influence of wedge angle, depth of penetration, penetration rate, entry angle, compaction state, and particle size on the force required and the work performed was ascertained. Empirical equations describing force and work as a function of penetration were obtained for each set of experiments.

Oil-yield results are presented for 65 oil-shale sections in Piceance Creek Basin, Colorado, sampled during the period 1957 through 1963. Including previously published data, oil-yield results for 203 sampled sections have now been released by the Bureau of Mines to aid in appraising the shale oil potential of the basin. Oil yields of core samples (135 sets) were regarded as reliable bases for appraising the Mahogany-zone interval, but only 5 sets of cores sampled the deeper, lower-zone oil shales. Drill cuttings (68 sets) sampled the lower-zone oil shales, but their oil yields are principally indicative and should be confirmed by analyses of cores. More complete core sampling of the lower-zone oil shales is needed.

The Zebulon manganese deposit has been known for a number of years. It is situated about 3 miles east of Zebulon, Wake County, N. C., on the Avon, Privett property (fig. 1). The deposit outcrops as a vein, or dike averaging-16 to 20 feet in width. Drilling by the Bureau of Mines has shown that this outcrop results from consolidation of a number of small stringers near the surface. The surface width and the Percentage of manganese oxides (resulting from. weathering) diminish with depth. Below 50 to 80 feet, the vein material is mainly quartz and spessartite garnet. The deposit was first examined by W. T. Benson, a Bureau of Mines engineer, in 1941. The Bureau conducted a diamond-drilling exploratory program an the property from November 7, 1944, to January 25, 1945. A. total of 2,508.5 feet was drilled in 14 holes along the strike of the deposit.

Iron ore deposits in south-central Missouri have emerged as a possible resource for the rare-earth elements. The Pea Ridge Iron Mine is one such deposit. Rare-earth minerals at the Pea Ridge Iron Mine are contained in breccia pipes consisting primarily of silicon oxides and feldspars. These pipes extend up through the magnetite ore body and appear to be alterations and replacement of earlier hematite. The mineralogy of these pipes is very complex and varied, which could complicate the concentration and extraction of the rare-earth minerals. This U.S. Bureau of Mines !eport represents a study by characterization of the mineral phases to assess the amenability and development of concentration and extraction techniques. Previous characterization of rare-earth minerals has been mainly by transmitted light microscopy. This method along with reflected light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction was used to identify and characterize the rare-earth and associated minerals. The minerals identified were the major ore minerals, magnetite and hematite; the rare-earth phosphates, monazite and xenotime; the rare-earth silicate, allanite; the minor associated minerals, cassiterite, pyrite, and apatite; and the gangue minerals, feldspar, quartz, and actinolite.

The dust exposure of the longwall shearer operator is usually determined by his position relative to the cutting drums. The dust generated during cutting may travel up-wind, against the primary airflow, and be carried out into the walkway where it can contaminate the intake air for as much as 10 feet outby the shearer operator's controls. Thus, both head and tail drum operators are exposed to un-acceptably high levels of air-borne respirable dust. One Solution The latest generation of long-wall shearers has features that make the use of radio remote or umbilical (hard wire) remote control relatively easy to implement. Remote control can enable shearer operators to control machines from positions that are less dusty than normal control stations. With either type, the head-drum operator can now control the shearer from a position up to 20 feet on the intake-air side of the shearer, while the tail-drum operator's station is now located across from the head drum.

"INTRODUCTION Barite is one of the major industrial minerals whose production has increased considerably in the last 10 years. In 1935 domestic production of barite was 218,075 tons and. had increased by 1944 to 515,136 tons. 3/ Most of the primary uses for barite and barite products were developed before 1935, so the increase in barite production reflects the growth of industry in general rather than any recent developments in barite technology.The principal uses for ground and crushed barrite are as a weighting agent in heavy drilling fluids, as a filler in rubber and other materials, as a pigment and extender in paints, and as a flux in glass melt. In addition, a considerable' quantity of barite serves as the raw material for the manufacture of lithopone and barium chemicals.Specifications for barrite vary widely and depend primarily on the use to which the material is put. The primary requisites for barite used in heavy drilling muds -are that it have a minimum specific gravity of 4.2 and be very,low in soluble salts. A minimun barium sulfate content of 92 percent may be specified; but this is less important than the gravity. 4/ In addition before consumption the material must be ground to '92 percent minus 325-mesh. 5/ Lithopone and chemical manufacturers require a minimum of 94 Percent barium sulfate, a maximum of 1.0 percent iron oxide, and not more than a trace of fluorine. 6/ Barite used as fillers in light-colored products should be of fairly high grade, but the filler used in dark products may be considerably lower grade.Glass barite should contain a minimum of 96 percent barium sulfate, not more than 3 percent moisture, a maxium of 0.2 to 0.4 percent iron oxide, and not more than a trace of titanium oxide. Particle size is a matter of some importance in glass barite, also. 7/"

An alinement (steering) sensor for continuous mining machines has been developed under a Bureau of Mines contract. A laser source in the entry projects a beam parallel to the centerline of the entry. The beam is optically shaped to a narrow, vertical fan and illuminates an array of optical sensors bunted on the mini machine. These sensors interpret the location of the beam into meter readings of heading (angle) error and lateral displacement errors. The system, which was tested for 5 months in an operating mine, appears to be fundamentally sound, and with some modification, should be applicable to remote or automatic guidance of continuous miners and other machines.

Hand forces are important factors for risk assessment of hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS).1 Grip force is one of the most important force components in the operation of powered hand tools. A considerable number of studies on grip force have been reported. It is well known that the grip force applied on a cylindrical handle is not uniformly distributed on each axis across the center of the handle cross-section.2 Therefore, maximum and minimum orientations of grip force exist around the handle. Such orientations have not been clearly identified. In a recently proposed international standard (ISO/CD 15230, 2005),3 it is stated that “the direction of the main gripping force is generally parallel to the z-axis defined in ISO 8727.” 4 This assertion is questionable, and further examinations are required. The objective of this study was to establish a fundamental theory on the distribution of the grip force around cylindrical handles. Methods As shown in Fig. 1, the grip force is defined as a vector composed of normal and shear components (FN & FT) in this study. Fig. 2 shows the hand coordinate system defined in this study, together with the ISO systems.1,4 Based on this novel grip force definition, we derived four fundamental properties and a theorem. More significantly, we formulated a novel hypothesis: similar to Mohr’s circle of stress, the normal and shear components can be represented approximately using an ellipse on the plane of the two force coordinates, as shown in Fig. 3. The maximum and minimum grip normal forces are termed as the first principal grip force (F1) and the second principal grip normal force (F2), respectively. Their corresponding orientations are termed as the first principal grip angle (a1) and the second principal grip angle (a2). A series of experiments were conducted to test this hypothesis. Twelve

The Bureau of Mines, in pursuing investigations looking to greater safety in mining, has analyzed samples of the air in many different coal mines in the United States, and has studied the analyses. This report presents the results of one phase of this study and shows how atmospheric air, after entering a coal mine, loses oxygen and gains carbon dioxide with resulting formation of so-called black damp. Also the report discusses the effects of the constituents of black damp on men, on the burning of oil and acetylene lamps, and on the ex- plosibility of methane. The term "black damp" was and still is widely used to designate accumulations of carbon dioxide, but a more exact definition of black damp, as Haldane, the English physiologist, has pointed out, is an accumulation of carbon dioxide and nitrogen in proportions larger than those found in atmospheric air. The reasons for preferring Hal- dane's definition are given on succeeding pages.

The Bureau of Mines measured the vapor pressures of selected mixtures in the binary systems CdCl2 ?SnCl2, CdCl2 -ZnC12, PbCl2 ?SnCl2, and PbCl2 -ZnCl2 by the static pressure method. These data were evaluated by the second-law (sigma-plot) method. Equations expressing the vapor pressures and the heats and free energies of vaporization as functions of temperature are given.

In connection with its investigation looking to the prevention of waste and the increase of safety and efficiency in the mineral indus- tries the Bureau of Mines has undertaken a study of the possible uses of the electric furnace in metallurgy. This bulletin presents a com- pilation of such data as seem to be useful for the information of persons who may be interested in the matter. In the application of electricity to metallurgy three kinds of processes are involved, namely, mechanical, thermal, and electrolytic. Under the mechanical application of electricity come those proc- esses of dressing and concentrating ores that are known as either electrostatic or electromagnetic processes. In electrothermic processes the current is used as a source of heat. The fundamental differences between the various types of electric furnace that are at present in commercial use relate to the manner in which the electric current is applied, as may be noted by reference to that part of this report in which the subject is discussed. In electrolytic processes the electric current is used for depositing metals from solutions. The process may be conducted in one of the following ways: (1) The material to be treated may be put into solu- tion and then electrolyzed, the material thus treated forming the electrolyte; (2) the material to be treated may form the anode or be placed in contact with the anode; or (3) the material to be treated may form the cathode or be placed in contact with the cathode. This report treats of electrothermic processes, with the possible exception of those for the reduction of aluminum from its ores. Moreover, of the processes used in the so-called electrochemical in- dustries only those for the reduction of an ore to metal, or to a com- pound of the metal that is of value in itself, or is an aid in metallurgical work, are here discussed.

Heats of solution of calcium carbon-ate (calcite) and calcium oxide in hydrochloric acid were determined by solution calorimetry. Combination of these two heats yields a value of 42.643±0.024 kcal/mole for the enthalpy of calcination of calcite at 298.15 K. Literature data on ?H°298.15 of calcination of calcite were reviewed and compared. Thermodynamic properties for the calcination process were calculated from 298.15 to 1,500 K using Gibbs energy functions. This research was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines as an effort to provide thermodynamic data for the advancement of minerals technology, energy conservation, and environmental preservation.

Conditions necessary to obtain optimum yield of useful products when coal is rapidly heated to extreme temperatures by laser irradiation were determined by the Bureau of Mines. Product distribution and yield were investigated as functions of several variables. Low-rank coals with high-volatile matter gave highest total gas yields. Medium-rank coals gave the highest yields of H2 and CA and low-rank coals gave highest yields of CO and C02. Macerals gave gases of approximately the same composition, but the total gas yield increased in the order fusinite, micrinite, vitrinite, and exinite. Total gas and C2H2 yields varied inversely with particle size. The addition of nominally inert gases such as Ar, He, N2 increased yields of H2, C2H2, and total gas. Metals such as nickel and platinum had little influence on the rate of coal decomposition. Total gas yield increased with total energy of irradiation, and the ratio of C2H2-CH4 increased with concentration of energy. A study was also made of the irradiation temperature, and a material balance was calculated.
