Methane is the chief constituent of natural gas, and large quantities of it are also obtained in coke-oven gas and in the off-gases from cracking higher hydrocarbons. Perhaps the most important potential chemical use of methane is in the production of higher hydro- carbons, both aliphatic and aromatic. The results of a relatively large number of researches have been published in the technical and patent literature on the thermal decomposition of methane, the objective being an industrial process for the production of "antiknock" motor fuel. No industrially feasible process has, however, been developed. An inspection of the literature on this subject indicates that the chief difficulty in the way of accomplishing this object lies in controlling the decomposition so that undesirable products are eliminated. A considerable number of quantitative experiments have been reported, the results of which provide only a vague and confusing picture of the various steps in the thermal decomposition of methane. The reaction mechanism has not been subjected to rigorous fundamental study, and the necessity for such a study is obvious if further progress is to be made. The thermal decomposition is only one of the reactions of methane which are of potential industrial importance and which require further fundamental investigation. The oxidation, hydrolysis, and halogenation of methane are other reactions which must be studied further. In view of the importance of methane as a raw material for various industrially desirable products, it is appropriate that a survey be made of the important facts concerning the physical and chemical properties of methane which will serve as an aid in subsequent experi- mental work. No attempt will be made to present a complete chronological review, but rather a condensed critical description of the important literature will be presented.

The main objective of occupational health and safety research is to minimize or eliminate the events that may cause fatal or non-fatal injuries to human workers. A commonly used technique is to devise an “incident prevention plan”, which is more often the product of thorough investigations of past reported incident events. Incident documentation and methodical reporting and systematic and thorough data collection, often help identify the root cause of the incident – in other words, the etiology of the incident. These retrospective analyses of the incidents can efficiently identify the future steps to take to achieve the objective of minimizing occurrence of “events of interest”. This paper introduces a novel technique – “Taxonomic Analysis”, which identifies the root causes of an event (an incident in this case) and can provide future direction for corrective measures to reduce the probability of occurrence of the event. A taxonomic analysis involves systematic and organization of data based on observation, description, and classification. This paper utilizes the rock fall related incident narratives, available with the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) database (1984-1999), for a taxonomic analysis. The study found that 67.6% of groundfall incidents occurred in supported areas with the remainder (32.4%) in unsupported areas. Some form of rock mass failure appears to cause about 50% of groundfall incidents, although in 39.7% of the overall groundfall incidents or two-thirds of those involving rock mass failure, the exact nature of the rock mass failure could not be determined from the narratives. Human activities factors such as scaling or barring down, drilling or bolting, and setting timbers or cribbing accounted for another 34.5% of the groundfall incidents. Finally, support system failures made up the remaining 15.5%. Results from this taxonomic analysis may suggest focus areas toward which preventive measures and future research activities could concentrate.

The total production capacity of the natural-gasoline industry increased to 27,212,000 gallons (647,905 barrels) daily on January 1, 1950, from 21,322,000 gallons (507,670 barrels) daily on January 1, 1948. The rate of growth during these 2 years averaged 13 percent per year, compared with 9 percent per year from 1946 to 1948 and 6 percent from 1944 to 1946. The total number of operable plants on January 1, 1950, was 554, 5 more than at the beginning of 1948. The number of absorption plants increased by 12, the number of cycling plants by 7, and the number of combination plants by 4. The number of compression plants and charcoal plants continued to decrease. Absorption plants accounted for 67 percent of the total capacity on January 1, 1950, compared with 62 percent 2 years previous. Eighty-two per- cent of the expansion in these 2 years was in absorption-plant capacity. Cycle plants accounted for 24 percent of the total industry capacity at the beginning of 1950, compared with 27 percent on January 1, 1948. The average daily capacity of absorption plants increased from 38,400 gallons at the beginning of 1948 to 50,600 gallons at the beginning of 1950. During the same period, the average daily capacity of cycle plants decreased from 150,200 gallons to 144,100 gallons. Texas showed the largest gain in number of plants 13 absorption, 4 compression, and 4 cycling plants. The State accounted for 67 percent of the gain in capacity and on January 1, 1950 had 50 percent total national capacity. Louisiana followed with 7 additional plants. Pennsylvania reported 14 and West Virginia reported 13 fewer plants than in 1948. Most of these reductions were in the number of compression plants.

Thermodynamic data for selected metal sulfates were critically evaluated and compiled as part of the Bureau of Mines program to provide a scientific base for use in developing new technology and predicting the feasibility of new processes. Investigation into the expressions of the field produced by a loop over a conducting half space or in an infinite conducting half space are well documented. Reasonably complex descriptions of the effects of stratification also are reported. However, a model which must contain all of these complexities because of transmission to depths of 15,000 feet and also include the pertibation of the field by a verticle cylindrical steel casing loses its facility in the field or for quick, accurate approximation to field magnitudes and phase. This paper describes the results of two field tests to determine the attenuation and phase versus depth and frequency of an electromagnetic wave (induction field). A simple two-layer model is postulated to predict the magnitude and phase of the induced field which does not require sophisticated computing tools. Correlation of the model with experimental results show agreement of most amplitude measurements to within 3 db and most phase measurements to within five degrees. The tests were conducted in a 7400 foot deep well in Nevada and an 11,000 foot deep well in Wyoming which had conductivities ranging from .0025 mhos/m to .25 mhos/m. The surface transmitting dipole had an area of ~ 10 6 feet squared and constant frequency signals of 1.5 Hz to 20 Hz were transmitted through the earth utilizing less than 65 watts of power. The estimated value of world crude mineral production in 1992 was $1,633.3 billion in terms of current (1992) dollars, or $1,178.0 billion in terms of constant 1983 dollars. This latter figure was 4.8% above the 1992 level but was 2.4% below the record-high level of $1,207.1 billion 1983 dollars set in 1980. Table 1 provides the latest available revised time series of the estimated value of world crude mineral production both in terms of 1983 constant dollars and in terms of current dollars. The statistical base for this estimation is derived from the data on the value of production of a group of key commodities that was published in the authoritative French language mineral industry periodical, Annales des Mines, for selected years up to 1983. The aforementioned values and those presented in the table are for crude minerals only and only begin to suggest the impact that the mineral industry has on the world economy. These figures represent only the value of mineral materials as they are mined or otherwise extracted from the Earth. They do not reflect the value added to these materials through downstream processing within the facilities commonly accepted as mineral industry plants. That is, value added through beneficiation of ores, smelting, refining, and similar processing is not included in these figures. Comprehensive world data on the value added by such processing are not available; however, a conservative estimate of the total value of processed output from mineral industry plants derived wholly from primary (newly mined) materials would be on the order of about $2,800 billion constant 1983 dollars or $3,900 billion in terms of 1992 dollars.

The Bureau of Mines performed a pilot study examining the effects of posture on back strength and Maximum Acceptable Weight of Lift (MAWL) on six healthy male subjects (M = 32 years + 4 SD). Six hack strength measurements (3 static and 3 dynamic) were made while the subjects were kneeling and standing. In addition, these subjects (who were unaccustomed to lifting in these postures) volunteered to participate in a study of psychophysically determined NAWL in both postures. Results of the back strength tests showed a significantly lower peak torque per body weight output in kneeling versus standing hack strength measurements for five out of six test comparisons (p < .05). Subjective estimates of lifting capacity in the kneeling posture were significantly lower than those for the stooped posture (p < .05). The results of tests of hack strength and lifting capacity in these two postures provide useful information to consider in determining the physiological and psychophysical stresses imposed by these

In spite of advances in measurement techniques and an explosive increase in the volume of research, our understanding of human strength remains in its introductory stages. It is clear that muscle strength is a highly complex and variable function that depends on a large number of factors. It is not surprising, therefore, that large differences in strength exist not only between individuals, but even within the same individual tested repeatedly on a given piece of equipment. The issue is compounded by the fact that correlations of strength among different muscle groups in the same individual are generally low, and tests of isometric strength do not necessarily reflect the strength an individual might exhibit in a dynamic test. As a result of these and other influences, great care needs to be exercised in designing, evaluating, reporting, and interpreting muscular strength assessments. Traditionally, tests of muscular strength were in the domain of the orthopaedist, physical therapist, and exercise physiologist. Such tests are also an important tool for the ergonomist, however, because of the high strength demands on workers in manual materials-handling tasks. In some cases, task demands may approach or even exceed the strength that an individual is voluntarily willing to exert in a test of strength. In such cases, evidence suggests that the likelihood of injury is significantly greater than when the task demands lie well within an individual&apos;s strength capacity. Because the relationship among strength capabilities, job demands, and musculoskeletal injury has been established, it is apparent that tests of muscular strength may benefit the ergonomist both in designing jobs and in ensuring that individuals have sufficient strength to safely perform physically demanding jobs. Several strength assessment techniques have been employed for these purposes, each possessing unique characteristics and applicability to job design and worker selection procedures. Our main purpose has been to elucidate these strengths and weaknesses, so that tests of strength may be properly applied in designing jobs and selecting workers. One of the crucial points we have emphasized is that any test of strength used in job design or worker selection must be directly related to the demands of the job.(1) For example, if an occupational lifting task has a high dynamic component, a test of isometric strength is not likely to provide the data necessary for proper design of the job. Of course, dynamic strength tests would also be misapplied in assessing a job requiring isometric exertions. Another potential pitfall is using tests of strength on isolated muscle groups and assuming that they are indicative of whole-body strength. For example, one might mistakenly assume that dynamic trunk extension strength represents a person&apos;s capability to perform a lifting task. However, an individual&apos;s lifting capacity may be entirely unrelated to trunk extension strength. It may, instead, be limited by an individual&apos;s arm or leg strength, depending on the task being performed. A final point on strength assessment should be made. An individual&apos;s strength capability cannot be considered a fixed human attribute. Strength training regimens can increase an individual&apos;s strength capability by 30%-40%. Whether

This is the Seventh of a series of publications that describe methods and practices used in mining bituminous coal mechanically.3/ This report deals with the operation referred to in coal mining as continuous mining, and the interest shown by mining companies in this method is the reason for this study. Only continuous mining as it applies to the room-and-pillar system of mining, or a modification thereon, is discussed in detail in this report. Although not always as continuous as the name implies, it is a system of mining in which a machine is used to cut and load coal in one continuous operation without drilling and blasting the coal. With the mining equipment in most general use today, the usual cycle of operation in mining of coal is: (1) Timber, (2) cut, (3) drill, (4) blast, and (5) load. As the phases of this type cycle cannot be performed simultaneously in the same working place, it is necessary to operate from 3 to 7 working places so that at least 1 place is available for coal loading at all times. Even if the schedule of the phases in a cycle is maintained, coal production ceases during the time required to move the loading equipment from one loading place to the next. In 1920 a continuous-type mining machine4/ was installed in an Illinois coal mine to drive entries. Several other companies used these entry drivers for short periods in the following few years. In 1927 a southern Illinois coal company installed 2 of these machines which, in the next 25 years, were reported to have driven over 200 miles of entries. The machines did not attain widespread usage.

Avoid accidents that can occur when applying belt dressing from an aerosol can, particularly when can pressure has dropped or when spraying against wind. Approach Use a garde-type sprayer. How It Works Commercially available garden-type sprayers can be used for applying conveyor belt dressing from 12 feet away, or more. Pressure is easily raised and maintained at about 50 psi. Most sprayers have a hand pump, but a battery-powered cordless model is also available. Garden-type sprayers are available in various sizes from 11/2 to 18 gallons, with the larger models wheel mounted. The 3-gallon model evaluated by the Bureau has a shoulder carrying strap, which gives additional safety advantages. Use of the strap frees both hands for climbing ladders or holding onto catwalk rails. When spraying, one hand can remain on a handhold to lessen the chances of touching a moving belt.

"SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS1. The investigation shows that the most important beds in Allegany County, from the standpoint of known recoverable reserves are: Lower Bakerstown, Upper Freeport, Upper Bakerstown, Upper Kittraing - less important beds are: Sewickley, Waynesburg, Pittsburgh, and Barton. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and 1,800 tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated to be 556 million short tons, as of January 1, 1951. Of this total, 304 million short tons is in beds 23 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager to permit making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total eat ted reserves.3. Recoverable reserves of coal have been estimated in beds 28 inches and more thick. This thickness is about the minimum now being mined by hand-loading onto conveyors in the Appalachian region. The weighted average recovery for all beds in Allegany County, as determined by this investigation, is 49.8 percent. This percentage is based on the total thickness of coal (less partings 3/8 inch or more thick) in the bed rather than on the thickness of the coal mined. Based on the weighted average percent recovery for all beds in Allegany County, the recoverable reserves are estimated to be 152 million short tons as of January 1, 1951.4. The Allegany County coals are low-volatile bituminous in rank.5. The Allegany County coals are strongly coking."

Measurements were made of the flow of helium, methane, ethane, butane, and toluene through thin disks of coal. All measurements were made on a dense layer in the Pittsburgh seam identified as attritus. Flow increased with pressure differential and temperature. At room temperature and a pressure differential of 1 atmosphere flow rates along the bedding plane of Pittsburgh seam coal were helium 881 X 10-10 cm2 sec-1, methane 1.2 X 10 -10 cm2 sec-1, ethane 0.54 X 10-10 cm 2 sec-1, n-butane 0.35 X 10-10 cm2sec-1, and toluene 3.8 X 10-10 cm2sec-1. Flow rates were 50 percent lower across the bedding plane of the coal than along the bedding plane. Activation energies were 3.9 kcal mole-1 for helium and 13.6 kcal mole-1 for methane, with diffusion measured either along or across the bedding plane.

West Virginia ranks second in the nation in coal production, surpassed only by Wyoming, and usually accounts for 15 to 20percent of the nation&apos;s total annual production. Cod occurs in seams of minable thickness in all but nine of the state&apos;s 55 counties. There are two coal- producing regions, the northern field and the southern field. West Virginia coal is mined by both underground and surface methods. Underground mines in West Virginia account for a major portion of its coal production. Surface mines are generally contour operations and, especially in the southern field, are in steep slope areas, with slopes greater than 20 degrees. Many of the surface mines remove multiple seams. Recoverable reserves in West Virginia total in excess of 55 billion tons of bituminous coal. West Virginia&apos;s regulatory program was conditionally approved on January 19, 198 1. Its Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved February 23,198 1, with emergency authority granted on August 26,1988.

For a number of years the Bureau of Mines has conducted semi-annual surveys to determine the changes in motor gasoline being sold in the United States. It was pointed out in the previous survey that there was an apparent tendency toward greater uniformity in the character of gasoline marketed in the United States. This practically uniform tendency which continued from April, 1917 to January, 1923, has been interrupted in the, present survey, as shown by an examination of the column marked "Difference," as given in Table 1. The figures in this table were obtained by averaging the end points of the least volatile and most volatile samples of gasoline. For example, of 850 samples analyzed in 1919, the 10% ,(85 samples) having the highest end points and the 10% having the lowest end points mere grouped, and the end points of each group averaged. These averages are represented in the table as the "Maximum 10%" and the ?Minimum 10%? respectively. The same process was used on the other surveys.

"INTRODUCTION Scheelite occurring in tactite at the Black Rock tungsten mine, near Benton in Mono County, Calif., was investigated by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Geological Survey as part of their search for additional sources of supply of strategic minerals authorized under the Strategic Materials Act. 3/4/The work accomplished by the Bureau, and the assays of samples taken are described in this manuscript. The ore found aided materially in prolonging the operating life of the mine during the recent national emergency, supplying much-needed tungsten for war use. ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigations of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more efficient utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. "Usually a newly developed machine leaves the factory ""on a wing and a prayer."" The manufacturer hopes that the operator will hasten to report defects. In turn, when the suggestions arrive the manufacturer makes the required changes and maintains close collaboration with the operator. Thus the history of our machines of today is written.Laboratory concentration tables are exceptions to growth by experiment and collaboration. Their operation never enters directly into the cost sheet; they are seldom used for longer periods than 10 minutes; and the experimenter, while hurrying to another job, accepts the table, good or bad, for a quick test on his ore. Thus we go back about 50 years when we use the preset in factory-built laboratory table.The Southern Experiment Station, Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the University of Alabama, recognized the existence of a tabling problem net usually considered. That is, instead of using the table to test the ore, the ore was used to test the table. In this critical examination of laboratory table six defects were encountered (and remedied). They are:"

"INTRODUCTION This is the fourth in a series of reports on properties of commercial motor fuels, made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Cooperative Fuel Research (C.F.R.) Committee and the Bureau of Mines of the Department of the Interior. The first report gave data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36 3/. The second resort gave the same data for motor gasolines sold during the summer of 1936 4/. The third report of the series gave the same data for motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1936-37 5/.This report covers 63 brands of gasoline represented by 1,136 samples excluding the Pacific Coast. Those from the Pacific Coast were averaged by the Pacific Coast technical group before being submitted and are published exactly as they were submitted. In some areas reports were received from five or six companies on the same brands of gasoline, whereas in other areas only one company reported on a brand. Thus, it can be seen that some of the data are more representative than others."

Native asphalt was produced in 1977 by six companies in four States. Leading States were Texas and Utah. Output declined 39% to 1,237,000 tons valued at $18,874,000. Bituminous limestone was produced by Whites Uvalde Mines and by Uvalde Rock Asphalt Co. in Uvalde County, Tex.; by Southern Stone Co. in Colbert. Ala.; and by Barton County Rock Asphalt Co. in Barton County, Mo. Gilsonite was produced by American Gilsanite Co. in Uinta County. Utah, and by Ziegler Chemical and Mineral Corp. in Weber County. Utah. The asphalt was used for streets and roads, and for other purposes.

Water pollution has been an integral part of most mining operations in the past. Most mine planners had designed their mining operations with little or no regard for prevention of water pollution. The main planning element was always the economics of mineral recovery. Quite often the cheapest means of mineral recovery resulted in the largest water pollution problems. Recent water pollution laws have introduced a new economic element - water pollution control costs - to be considered in mine planning. Water pollution control costs can be extremely high. Foresighted planning can minimize these costs and provide better water pollution control. Effective pollution control preplanning can eliminate pollution from active mines and minimize pollution that may occur after completion of mining. Presently available technology can practically eliminate water pollution by treatment of the mine water. Use of water treatment during mining has no effect on the levels of water pollution after treatment ceases and the mine is abandoned. Therefore, this section of the report deals with preplanning to reduce water pollution, both present and future, by using at-source control techniques. Proper planning of mining and pollution control techniques should follow the concept of a complete, comprehensive reclamation plan. This plan should have control measures designed for all phases of mining from initiation through completion. Preplanning involves acquiring complete information concerning the future mine site, defining the reasons why mining could cause pollution from the site, and determination of available techniques to prevent or minimize formation or transportation of pollutants. Location of haulage and access roads and other mine related facilities should be included in preplanning for water pollution control. Electrooxidation techniques were investigated on a bench scale by the Bureau of Mines to determine the applicability of the process for extracting molybdenum and rhenium from low-grade molybdenite concentrates. Parameters affecting the extraction, such as pulp density, power consumption, reagent requirements for pH control, and electrolytic cell configuration, were studied. Molybdenum and rhenium extractions of 98 to 99 percent were achieved from several concentrates containing 4.76 to 28.6 percent molybdenum and 180 ppm to 1,000 ppm rhenium. Optimum results were obtained by maintaining pH values between 5.5 and 7.0 during electrolysis and allowing the final pH to rise to about 8.2. Reagent consumption was 4 to 6 pounds of sodium carbonate per pound of molybdenum extracted. The power consumption declined from a range of 12 to 25 kilowatt hours per pound of molybdenum extracted with immersion electrodes to 9.7 kilowatt hours with a bipolar flow-through cell; however, molybdenum extraction was independent of cell configuration.
