The continuous miner training system provides classroom materials training aids, and a continuous miner simulator to provide a short, intensive instruction and skills development program for training or retraining continuous miner operators. This project included refinement of training objectives, revision of training aids, improvements to the simulator, and evaluation of the entire system. This report describes the revised classroom materials and the validation of the training system.

The Bureau of Mines conducted oil-displacement tests in the laboratory with three water-in-oil and five oil-in-water emulsions that were created with ultrasonic energy at a frequency of 20 kHz and an acoustic intensity of approximately 100 watts per cm2. Emulsions of either crude oil or kerosine, brine, and 112 to 2 percent emulsifier were formed during 30 seconds of acoustic irradiation. Results indicate that ultrasonic energy induces greater and more uniform dispersion of one liquid in another in the presence of small amounts of chemi¬cal emulsifiers. When the emulsions were injected as a buffer slug before waterflooding, recovery of the oil-in-place was 8 to 22 percent greater than with conventional waterflooding in the test specimens, regardless of the con¬tinuous phase (oil or brine). The emulsions do not appear to be applicable to the Appalachian area; however, because the oilfields are too "tight," the clays in the formation remove the emulsifier from the displacing fluid, and not enough additional oil is produced, compared with recovery using conventional waterflooding, to warrant the increased operating costs.

In this Bureau of Mines investigation, conditions were determined to form an iron sulfide adherent coating with a metallic golden luster on steel upon anaerobic heat treatment with sulfur. The sulfide formation rate was determined in the temperature range of 105° to 500° C with reaction times up to 68 hours. The optimum temperature and time to form an adhering decorative coating on mild steel was in the range of 105° C for about 70 hours to 285° C for 1 hour. The golden coating consisted of an inner layer of pyrrhotite and an outer layer of pyrite. At temperatures higher than about 300° C, the outer layer thickness decreased owing to the decomposition of pyrite to pyrrhotite.. Small quantities (<0.5 wt-pct) of petroleum oil accelerated the sulfide growth rate. The sulfide coating decreased the corrosion rate of steel in a neutral aqueous medium by a factor of two. The dissolution of pyrite in water was dependent on particle size and surface area with the flat pyrite coatings exhibiting the lowest dissolution rate.

Vehicle vibration exposure has been linked to chronic back pain and low back symptoms among agricultural tractor drivers. The objectives of this study by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) were to assess driver whole body vibration (WBV) exposures and recommend interventions to reduce the risk of back related injuries, particularly relative to vehicle jarring/jolting (the transient mechanical shock components of WBV). The methodology included collecting, from two independent samples, ?eld data and health and work history data of farm equipment operators. Data were collected during mowing, raking, baling, chiseling, tilling, and road travel for different model tractors. Spraying using a sprayer and shrub removal with a skid steer loader were also included. Based on ISO 2631 (1985), the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists, threshold limit values, presents 0.5 m/s2 as the action level recommended by the Commission of European Communities for overall weighted total RMS acceleration (vector sum for axes x, y, and z) [ACGIH, 2006. Threshold limit values and biological exposure indices. Cincinnati, OH]. WBV measured at the operator/seat interface exceeded this action level. The roughest rides and highest vector sum accelerations occurred with small utility tractor mowers (3.3 and 2.8 m/s2) and a skid steer loader (1.7 m/s2). Major ?ndings from health and work history data showed 96% of participants reported having to bend or twist their necks, although 24% reported neck symptoms. Sixty four percent of participating operators reported experiencing back symptoms (e.g., pain, aching, stiffness, etc.). Recommendations included: specifying a seat that ??better?? isolates operators from jars/jolts with new tractor purchases; maintaining the seat/seat suspension and replacing worn or damaged cushions with NIOSH tested viscoelastic foam padding; using larger diameter tires with radial ply instead of bias ply construction, particularly on small utility tractor mowers, to aid in attenuating ride ??roughness??; using a swivel seat to reduce the stress on the neck from bending or twisting; and improving efforts to educate owner/operators of the adverse effects of WBV exposures. Since the data presented in this paper were collected from two independent samples, the authors were unable to draw any correlations or etiological inferences from the study. However, results were compared and contrasted with other studies which included similar vibration measurements in agriculture.

This report is Volume I of a three volume final report on the micro-seismic monitoring of a longwall coal mine. Volume I deals for the most part with the detailed aspects of the microseismic field study itself, however, brief references are made to other secondary studies described in Volumes II and III. During this field study a mobile microseismic monitoring facility and associated transducers were employed to detect and record microseismic activity above a longwall panel at Greenwich Colleries, Barnesboro, Pennsylvania. The fundamental objectives of this study were (1) to evaluate the feasibility of detecting microseismic activity originating from longwall mining operations using an approximately planar, near-surface, geophone array installed above the longwall and (2) to attempt to locate the sources of the various microseismic events. This investigation has proven that, using the techniques developed it is possible to detect microseismic events at depths of more than 400 ft and at horizontal distances in excess of 800 ft from the source. The majority of the observed events were found to have frequencies on the order of 10 to 100 Hz, and particle velocities of 50 to 300 µips. When a suitable velocity model was utilized, most of the events located were computed to be within ±100 ft vertically of the coal seam and ±50 ft horizontally of the longwall face. The results of the overall research project suggest that additional research should be undertaken in a number of associated areas.

The production and processing of crude petroleum and natural gas are the dominant economic sectors of the Middle East. The 15 countries that constitute the region accounted for 28% of world crude petroleum output, 17.2% of world natural gas plant liquid production, and 5.3% of world dry natural gas production. Only Cyprus and Lebanon were not crude petroleum producers. About 66% of total world crude petroleum reserves and 31 % of total world natural gas reserves are in the Middle East. Transportation and port facilities in the region are geared to expediting efficient and rapid shipment of these materials. Export sales of these fuels provide funding for further diversification of the mineral industry. Additional development of downstream facilities for producing energy-intensive metals such as aluminum and byproducts of the fuels such as petrochemicals and fertilizers can be expected. Earnings from the industry are also channeled by several Governments in the region to mineral industry projects in Africa and elsewhere. Several countries in the region own major petroleum refineries and distribution facilities worldwide. Petroleum prices rose overall during the year owing to the invasion by Iraq of Kuwait in August 1990. Output from both countries, the fourth and fifth largest producers, respectively, in the Middle East, was negatively affected by the war. Kuwaiti crude oil wells and pipeline facilities suffered extensive war damage while exports of petroleum and petroleum refinery products by Iraq ceased owing to a U.N. embargo. The embargo also impacted Jordan, an exporter of phosphate and potash. Shipments of crude petroleum by pipeline from Iraq through Saudi Arabia and Turkey and by vessel through the Persian Gulf were terminated. However, the loss in production from Iraq and Kuwait was more than made up by accelerated output from other Middle East and world producers. Saudi Arabia, in particular, with its excess production capacity, accounted for the largest portion of the increase.

"INTRODUCTION This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Coordinating Fuel Research (CFR) Committee of the Coordinating Research Council (CRC) 3/ and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36.4/ Further reports were issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding sum¬mers and winters to and including the summer of 1941.4/ No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed.!The present report presents analytical data for 4,544 samples, represent¬ing the products of 124 companies. The samples represented in this report were obtained during December 19146, January and February 19-(. As in previous surveys, the companies covered Ly the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples - regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines.As the number of analyses submitted for samples of third-grade gasoline are not considered adequate to represent this type of motor fuel, data for the analyses have not been averaged, but the individual items are tabulated. The number of samples, items, and brands comprising each group is as follows: Regular-price, 2,368 samples, 319 items, and 113 brands; premium-price, 2,172 samples, 289 items, and 106 brands; third-grade, 4 samples, 4 items, and 4 brands. Increased mechanization .of coal mines has emphasized the need for study of actual power requirements of the various machines employed in the production of coal and losses in the distribution of power to these machines. These studies are being made in order that hazards, excessive use of power, and high maintenance cost of equipment resulting from these losses may be analyzed and eliminated where possible. Research on the use of electric power in-coal mines was suggested by the Advisory Committee of the Bureau of Mines in 1937, and it was decided to begin with a study of individual machines of various types under operating conditions in modern coal mines. The transmission of power, particularly line losses and inadequate return circuits, should be a part of the investigation. This report presents some of the data of an initial study in commercial mines. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The superintendents, engineers, and other officials of the two mines studied cooperated fully and aided in setting up and transporting the test equipment, giving such information as was requested.

The Bureau of Mines measured surface subsidence above four small coal mine room-and-pillar sections in southwestern Pennsylvania, to obtain preliminary information on the magnitude and character of selected parameters, such as angle of draw and maximum subsidence, which are essential to the development of subsidence prediction methods. Data varied widely at the four sites; this is attributed to local geologic and mining conditions. Surface deformation at each site was of a magnitude normally associated with severe structural damage.

This paper describing the methods of ruining a sand, gravel, and bowlder deposit 20 miles east of Los Angeles, and the classification and preparation of these materials for market, is one of a series being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines on methods and cost of mining sand and gravel. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding, the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total costs. It is recognized that publication of total costs might in many instances cause embarrassment to individual operators as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion anti study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations stall ensue. "INTRODUCTION The Buck. Creek corundum area of Clay County, North Carolina, includes one of the largest single masses of peridotite outcrops in the whole Appalachian Range and has been described by Pratt, an early authority on corundum, as offering one of the best potentialities for corundum production in North Carolina.Two principal types of corundum deposits are found at Buck Creek the vein type and the corundum-bearing amphibolite dikes.The vein deposits occur in structural fissures that strike north to northeast in a gangue of feldspar, zoisite, an, chlorite. The corundum is generally coarse-grained and good-quality. The corundum content varies from several percent to 50 percent.The corundum in the amphibolites is more or less disseminated through the dike, is generally lower-grade, and is less in quantity, than the vein corundum. About 50 percent of the amphibolite corundum is coarse enough for snagging-wheel grade but is difficult to separate from the amphibolite.Production from the Buck Creek area has been small and came mainly from high-grade pocket in the vein deposits. Pratt 3/ reports 300 tons of corundum ore was produced to about 1896. No record of subsequent production is available.The critical shortage of corundum during the war, due to transportation difficulties and the depletion of deposits abroad, prompted the Bureau of Mines to investigate domestic reserves.After a favorable report was obtained on the Buck Creek area, the Bureau began exploration of the deposit in September 1943 and continued until February 1945."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is engaged in many diverse programs fur improving mine safety. One area of interest to the Bureau is new and improved means for minimizing the hazards of accidental gas ignition or electrical shock should the frame of an off-track machine assume potential above ground. Various means presently used to prevent such occurences are the use of ground fault detectors for phase to ground faults in ac machines, and grounding conductors and diodes in dc machines. In a three phase ac power center, a phase to ground fault may be detected by monitoring the current in the grounding resistor which is required between the power center neutral on the load side of the power center transformer and ground. Another method for detecting a ground fault is to pass the three load conductors through a toroidal core transformer. The phase currents vectorially add up to zero if none of the phases are faulted, and hence the voltage of the transformer secondary is either zero or not zero if one of the phases is unbalanced or faulted.

In early June 1986, an underground fire of unknown origin erupted in one of several entries of a coal mine located in southwestern Colorado. For a time, mine personnel aggressively fought the fire. However, control of the fire was later lost. To prevent further damage and reduce the possibility of an explosion, all portals and shafts to the mine were sealed. The mine operator requested the U.S. Bureau of Mines&apos; assistance in obtaining and analyzing mine fire gases taken from sampling ports placed through the mine seals, as well as down boreholes drilled after the fire. This report recounts activities within the first 2 years of the mine being sealed. It includes a description of gases analyzed and mine atmosphere status equations generated from the analyzed gases. The gases were analyzed by chromatography and included standard atmospheric gases as well as higher hydrocarbons that are found in postfire atmospheres. Nine equations were used to evaluate what was occurring within the sealed mine. Following a description of the rationale behind each equation, the 2-year trend is briefly analyzed.

Crude shale oil produced by underground retorting of Green River Formation oil shale was hydrogasified over a cobalt-molybdate-on-alumina catalyst at operating temperatures ranging from 800° to 1,300° F, pressures of 500, 1,000, and 1,500 psig, and a liquid hourly space velocity of 1.02 volumes of oil per volume of catalyst per hour (Vo/Vc/hr). At a temperature of 1,300° F and pressure of 1,500 psig, 94 weight-percent of the liquid feed was converted to gas containing 72 volume-percent methane. With two reactors in series at a temperature of 1,170° F in reactor 1 and 1,260° F in reactor 2 and a pressure of 1,500 psig, 97 weight-percent of the liquid feed was converted to gas with a methane content of 75 volume-percent. Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) was hydrogasified at operating temperatures ranging from 500° to 1,400° F at a pressure of 500 psig over a cobalt-molybdate-on-alumina catalyst. Similar experiments were made with an empty tubular reactor. The data indicate that gasification reactions in the presence of a cobalt-molybdate catalyst change from predominantly a catalytic (carbonium ion) reaction to predominantly a thermal (free radical) reaction at temperatures greater than 1,100° F. The data also indicate that a reaction temperature of 1,350° F is necessary at the space velocities used in this investigation to make a synthetic natural gas (methane content of 90 volume-percent) from in situ crude shale oil.

This report is a compilation of preliminary and, in some cases, more extensive concentration experiments by the Federal Bureau of Mines on low-and medium-grade fluorspar ores from three localities in Nevada and one in California. The work was done on samples obtained from Shoshone mine, Nye County, Valery mine, Pershing County, and the Broken Hills mine, Mineral County, all in Nevada, and Dirty Weather mine, Inyo County, Calif. These investigations were made to aid in the development of domestic fluorspar resources, in line with the Bureau&apos;s long-established program of conservation of mineral resources. The treatment methods employed in the experimental work described included simulated or "heavy-liquid" gravity concentration of coarse minerals and comparatively fine-grained minerals, and flotation concentration of finely-ground minerals. These methods were attempted in order to beneficiate the ores and produce concentrates which could be marketed readily, with as high a recovery rate as possible, while using simple treatment methods suitable for small-scale operation.

Direct costs such as medical, legal, administrative, and worker’s compensation costs, property damage, lost earnings, and lost benefits are typically used to compute the economic impacts of occupational injuries. However, there are also a number of less obvious, indirect costs that substantially contribute to the overall loss costs. In fact, for every $1 of direct costs an estimated $3 to $5 of indirect costs are also incurred. This paper presents a systems approach that incorporates engineering, economics, psychology, and sociology in order to evaluate the total value of investments in safety. By studying the interrelated system comprised of the injured worker, their family and coworkers, as well as the organizational structure that was the setting for the incident, a methodology can be developed that will more accurately capture the true costs of mine injuries.

Mine seals are used extensively in underground coal mines to segregate mined-out areas and to isolate fire zones or underground areas that are susceptible to spontaneous combustion. Over the years, 30,000 mine seals have been erected in underground coal mines in the United States. Mine seals, along with rock dusting and ventilation, represent the fundamental means of preventing underground coal mine explosions. In this study the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) used ground penetrating radar (GPR) technology to determine if each of three test mine seals were uniformly constructed. Three mine seals representing different construction methods and materials (cast-in-place foamed cement; solid block, polyurethane foam and gravel; and wire mesh, rebar and gunite) were erected at the NIOSH Lake Lynn Laboratory’s underground mine as part of an on-going research program. The seals were imaged using GPR with 400-, 500-, 900-, and 1,000-MHz antennas. We found that variations in uniformity existed in the material for the cast-in-place foamed cement seal. Variations in uniformity also existed in the seal made from solid block, polyurethane foam and gravel. The post-processed radar records correlated closely with recovered core samples (areas of gravel and polyurethane foam, and areas containing only polyurethane foam). Finally, the radar records of the seal made of wire mesh, rebar and gunite showed the various components. The results of this work suggest that GPR could be used as a tool to evaluate mine seal characteristics and construction uniformity.

A pilot-scale treatment study was conducted on a copper-zinc bearing metal mine drainage using a pipeline treatment system called the In-Line System (ILS). The objective of this U.S. Bureau of Mines study was to determine whether the ILS could be extended from the treatment of coal mine drainages to the treatment of metal mine drainages. Hydrated lime (Ca(OH)2), quick lime (CaO), and caustic soda (NaOH) were used to neutralize the drainage. A novel reagent slurry of Ca(OH)2 and type C fly ash was also evaluated. Except for Ca(OH)2-fly ash slurry, treatment performance was evaluated for all reagents at pH values of 7,8,9, and 10. The Ca(OH)2-fly ash slurry was evaluated at a pH of 10. All reagents tested neutralized the metal mine drainage and substantially reduced the dissolved metal concentrations. It was concluded that the ILS could be useful in the treatment of metal mine drainages.

The Bell & Zoller Coal & Mining Co. recently completed construction of two slopes at Mine 3 near Zeigler , Ill . The slopes are in the Big Muddy River Valley , and construction was particularly difficult because the strata from the surface to a depth of 70 feet comprise water saturated sandy clay and sand . Many mining companies have similar shaft- and slope - sinking problems , and because these slopes were satisfactorily completed and now are in use the methods followed during construction are described in this information circular . It is believed that other companies with similar problems . will benefit by adopting the methods followed at Mine 3 .
