During 1946 several high-grade limestone deposits in western Washington were examined by the Bureau of Mines. This report presents the data obtained from investigation of the Sauk Mountain deposits in east-central Skagit County, Washington, The investigation consisted of transit and topographic surveys and sampling. The areas selected for sampling were first cleaned by blasting; channel samples up to 40 pounds Were cut where practical. Chip samples averaging 30 pounds were taken where channel samples could not be cut. A total of 21 samples in the Sauk Mountain area were taken and analyzed. The locations of the samples are shown in figures 2 and 4, and the analyses are listed in tables 1 and 2. This investigation is a part of a long-range program of general investigation of mineral resources for future industrial development of the Pacific Northwest. The Sauk Mountain deposits were investigated for the purpose of disclosing new sources of high-purity limestone, which could be mined and shipped at low cost to Seattle and other industrial cities in the Pacific Northwest.

This report describes the development of training materials for the operators of underground mining equipment in the underground metal and nonmetal mining industry. The objective was to determine the effectiveness and acceptability of these training materials and to provide the validated training materials to the industry. Ten modules were developed, based on industry need according to accident frequency, accident severity and exposure to the equipment. The final modules were an average of 20 minutes in length and used slides with synchronized narration on cassette tapes. Testing materials are included for use by the mines.

Research performed on computer modeling of mine power systems under USBM Grant G0155003 1S described. The work was performed at the Pennsylvania State University from 5 November 1975 through 4 November 1976. Results presented are interim in nature, and future research is planned to integrate the simulations which have been developed. The thrust of this research has been divided into three main areas. 1. Modification of a previously developed model (Mine Power System Simulation or MPSS) to include interactive operation and the use of default (average) load data. 2. Development of a dynamic simulation of interdependent mine power system induction motors. 3. Development of an approach to modeling of motor shaft loading of induction machines for mining operations. During the course of the current year's research, significant results have been achieved in all areas. Construction of an interactive MPSS model has been completed and checked. This simulation was written in APL code and is fully interactive. In addition, default data representing 158 different pieces of mining equipment has been developed for use with the interactive model. Additional work described includes the construction of a dynamic simulation of interdependent continuous miner induction motors and the development of an approach fo: motor shaft load torque computation from experimental data.

"INTRODUCTION AND ACKNOWLEDGMENTSAt the request of the lessees, the Pearl tract was examined in February 1946, by Otto Ruhl, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines. From the evidence of old drill logs and from the few available records of mining operations on the Pearl and the adjoining Trussel (Big Tom) tract, it appeared that a relatively small churn-drilling program might develop enough lead-since ore to justify resumption of mining. In March 1946, funds were allotted for churn drilling, and the work was begun the following month. Ten holes totaling 1,933 feet were completed before the close of the project in August 1946. The work was under the general supervision of C. H. Johnson, chief, Rolla Division, Mining Branch, and under the direct supervision of the Bureau project engineers. 3/In its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to our national security and economy, It is the,of the Bureau to publish the facts development by each project as soon as possible after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, makes preliminary examinations and conducts investigation of mineral deposits. The Metallurgical Branch, O. C. Ralston, chief, participates in this program by making beneficiation tests and analyses. In the present project, no metallurgical tests were made, and for the sake of speed the samples taken were analyzed by a local commercial assayer. 4/"

This Bureau of Mines report describes the development of a simple method of producing low-phosphorus hematite concentrates from certain submarginal southeastern iron ores. The investigation was undertaken to obtain additional information on the Clinton iron ore outcrops at the southwestern extremity of the Birmingham district of Alabama and to assist in the development of operating techniques that would make it profitable to use the marginal ores of this area for blast-furnace feed. Batch and continuous pilot-plant tests demonstrated that a relatively simple wet scrubbing treatment) followed by a desliming operation to reject argillaceous (clayey) gangue, consistently yielded a marketable granular hematite product. Iron losses were relatively high but could be tolerated in view of the low treatment cost.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting a program of research to evaluate and improve remote mine seal construction technology for mine fire control and suppression. The main focus of this work is to develop reliable technology that will remotely seal a mine opening from floor-to-roof and rib-to-rib. NIOSH, in partnership with Strata Mine Services Inc.1, is evaluating the capability of a two-component phenolic foam-based product, called Rocsil®1, that is intended for cavity filling, air and gas sealing, and consolidation of highly fractured strata. Rocsil® can be rapidly applied, has a quick cure time, a high expansion rate, good compressive resistance and excellent anti-static properties. When the resin and catalyst are mixed, an immediate foaming reaction occurs followed by rapid expansion up to 30 times the original volume. By virtue of its fire-resistance properties, Rocsil® foam has application for sealing underground mine areas undergoing heating from spontaneous combustion and it could be useful for remote mine seal construction to aid in mine fire control and suppression. This paper presents an overview of remote mine sealing technology, introduces the use of Rocsil® foam for remote mine seal installations, offers a case study of the use of this rigid foam material to remotely construct a temporary in-mine seal and discusses technology improvements. The Bureau of Mines used the Burnett method and apparatus to determine the compressibility factors for helium and carbon dioxide mixtures at 0°, 10°, 20°, 23°, and 35° C and to pressures of 900 psia. Tables of compressibility factors and approximations of the virial coefficients are presented for seven binary mixtures as well as for helium and carbon dioxide. The results compare favorably with existing data.

Field reconnaissance and laboratory tests an clay from South Windsor, Hartford County, Conn., indicate that the clay is suitable for lightweight aggregate raw material. Exploration of the deposit supports the conclusion that the reserves of clay are sufficient for economical mining operations to produce lightweight aggregate. Preliminary tests indicated that the clay has a short bloating range. Initial expansion occurred at 2,000° F, and at 2,100° F the clay was slightly overfired and sticky. Rotary kiln tests verified the preliminary data, and these tests showed that the clay would make a good lightweight aggregate if the processing temperature and the kiln feed sizes were closely controlled. Lightweight concrete made from the processed aggregate had properties comparable to those of concrete made from a commercial clay aggregate.

The Excel No. 3 Mine is a room-and-pillar mining operation owned by MC Mining, LLC, a subsidiary of Alliance Resource Partners, LP, which produces coal from the Pond Creek Coalbed in Pike County, Kentucky. Late on December 25, 2004, a fire was discovered near the bottom of the slope and, after an unsuccessful attempt to fight the fire underground, it was decided to address the fire remotely from the surface. The mine operator developed a plan to fight the fire that called for the installation of temporary seals at the slope and mine shafts to eliminate the inflow of oxygen. In addition, the plan called for drilling and completion of vertical boreholes into select areas of the mine workings to monitor the mine atmosphere and inject nitrogen gas and gas-enhanced foam. Over the next 9 days, nitrogen gas was injected almost continuously and gas-enhanced foam was injected periodically as deemed necessary. On January 7, 2005 it was determined that the fire was successfully suppressed. This paper presents a discussion of the fire-fighting approach and an analysis of the results of the application of gas-enhanced foam technology.

As part of its mission, the U.S. Bureau of Mines continues to develop technologies that will enable cost-effective compliance with environmental requirements. To this end, investigations to improve the kinetics of chalcopyrite dissolution by simultaneous grinding-leaching in ferric sulfate solution were conducted using the Bureau-designed turbo mill. The development of such a hydrometallurgical process would provide a nonpolluting alternative to conventional smelter technology. The effects of mill rotational speed and volume percent solids on the leaching time and energy required for copper extraction from chalcopyrite were evaluated. The results of this laboratory study have shown that the simultaneous grinding-leaching of chalcopyrite concentrate using the turbomill is technically feasible with essentially 100 pet extraction of copper being possible at 90° C. An optimal energy consumption of 1,153 kW?h/st of copper leached was found in batch testing with the mill operating at 400 rpm with a slurry containing 35 vol pet chalcopyrite. This energy consumption, while higher than other proposed leaching processes (about 600 kW?h/st), is of the same order of magnitude. Further refinement of the energy requirements would require additional testing using a continuous circuit. Leaching times of less than 1 h, for 80 pct copper extraction, are achievable using the turbomill grind-leach process.

The mentor/learner model is a time-honored approach to teaching, including within the mining industry. Miners know when they see excellence and have a deep respect for experts in their field. By using expert miners as mentors to other, less-experienced miners, training programs can be developed that will have a legitimacy and credibility that resonates with those being trained. Building upon concepts in current theories of adult education, this paper highlights the unique advantages of using mentoring as a teaching method that can make the educational experience both interesting and effective. Current NIOSH safety training materials use these concepts to deliver effective adult learning experiences for workers in the mining industry.

"Simple systematic accounting that adequately records all transactions has long been regarded as essential to the welfare of any business enterprise. Some of the defects that detract from the prosperity of the slate industry are attributable to a lack of effectiveness in cost keeping. This condition has prompted the United States Bureau of Mines to make a detailed study of accounting methods for the slate industry, and to present for consideration a system of accounts, which it is believed would enable the industry to attain more economical management and operation if accepted by a fair proportion of its important units.The method of accounting presented herein has been worked out with the assistance of leading slate producers and the recommendation are tentative and are submitted in this form as a means of developing constructive criticism. Believing that cooperative effort in this, as in many other problems, will bring the most enduring benefits to the industry as a whole, the writer urges that the most earnest consideration be given to this vital problem now facing the slate industry.Grateful acknowledgment is made of the helpful assistance rendered by R. E. Eckert of the accounting firm of Eckert, Degan, and Palmer of Easton, Pa., in compiling the charts and the explanatory text. He has brought to this work a wide knowledge of accountancy, supplemented by a background of direct contact with the slate industry, and his presence at the various conferences has been of great advantage in clearing up difficulties. The transportation of any commodity which is actually or potentially a source of fire or explosion, has been made safe, insofar as humanly possible, by rigid requirements as to inspection mechanical safety devices, and by printed labels. For the most part these precautions have been sufficient. This is evident when it is considered that in the thousands of instances in which commodities with a great fire risk have been transported, few disasters have occurred. This paper deals with the recent gasoline explosion which occurred at Memphis, Tennessee. At 7:50 a.m. January 24, 1921, vapors from a tan: car of gasoline became ignited and resulted in a blast that killed eleven people and badly injured nineteen others. Probably forty or fifty men, women, and children received slight injuries from falling debris or from burns. The explosion wrecked an oil plant, leveled a block of frame buildings, and broke window panes within a radius of five blocks.

The United States Bureau of Mines has made a study of roof control in 68 mines operating in the Pittsburgh coal bed in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio. In making these studies, much information was also obtained on various exact methods of development and pillar extraction as practiced by this large group of mines. It is proposed in this paper to describe these methods, by which this group of mines in 1931, a year of reduced industrial activity, produced 28,123,000 tons of bituminous coal - 7.4 percent of the national production for the same year and an amount equal to the combined production of the coal mired in the States of Alabama, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming. The results of these studies, insofar as they pertain to the prevention of injuries from falls of roof, have been published by the Bureau of Mines. In this paper only a few mines typical of each system will be described; however, should the reader be interested in other details with respect to these mines, he may refer to the following publications: T.P. 522, 1932, 43 pp. Falls of roof and coal in mines operating in the Pittsburgh coal bed in Marion and Monongalia Counties, W. This is the fourth progress report in the series on the use of detachable rock-drill bits in the metal mines of the United States. It contains comparative statistics and costs or drilling at eight mines not reviewed in previous reports, comparison of the use of detachable bits at small mines and large mines, a discussion on the life of drill rods, and general conclusions derived from an analysis of the rock-drilling practice at all the mines investigated on this survey. This paper completes the descriptions of operating practice in rock drilling at individual mines. Data on drilling practices at 28 mines are given in appendices I and II and drilling costs are shown in appendix III. Research in the fundamentals of rock drilling, including the use of detachable bits, has been undertaken by the Bureau of Mines in its testing adit at Mount Weather, Va. Reports on the progress off this investigation will be issued when results warrant their publication.

Humankind's interest in measurement of human physical strength probably dates to the first humans. At that time, life was truly a struggle in which the fittest survived. To a great extent, fittest meant strongest. Interestingly, current interest in human physical strength in the workplace stems from 1970-1980s vintage research demonstrating that persons with adequate physical strength are less likely to be injured on physically demanding jobs. Survival in many modem workplaces may still be a case of survival of the strongest. There is, however, a flip side to this issue - that persons with limited strength are more likely to be injured on "hard" jobs. To address this problem, we can apply what we know about physical strength to job design. "Hard" jobs can be redesigned to be within the physical strength capability of most people. Since physical strength is important to these jobs, we must find ways to quantify it through testing. This publication concerns human physical strength testing. Its purpose is not to recommend any particular type of testing, but rather to describe the types of testing available and their uses. It is up to each individual user of strength testing to decide which testing technique is most appropriate for his or her particular application. This booklet discusses four types of strength testing: isometric, isoinertial, psychophysical, and isokinetic.

This paper describes mining methods and practices of the Morenci Branch, Phelps Dodge Corp., Greenlee County, Ariz. It is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs in various mining districts in the United States. A similar program, conducted from 1928 to 1939, was generally conceded to have contributed substantially to improving the efficiency of mining operations. The morenci open-pit mine (see photograph, fig. 1) is in southeastern [zona] (fig. 2), on U.S. Highway 666 about 5 miles north of Clifton, county at of Greenlee County. The concentrator and smelter are near the mine at an altitude of about 4,400 feet. Figure 3 is a map of the mine and plant.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted an overcore stress measurement on the 5300 level of the Lucky Friday Mine, Mullan, ID, to investigate the stress regime around an experimental stope in a rock-burst-prone mine. The result indicated a stress field with unexpected magnitude and orientation [s 1 ?135 MPa (19,600 psi) oriented S 80° W). An unusual amount of rock-burst activity was encountered during subsequent excavation. A careful review of the overcore data suggested the overcore strain measurements were valid. Moreover, concentrated rock-burst activity suggested that the measured stress field did exist, but was localized and therefore did not represent the far-field in situ stress field.

This paper , which describes the mining methods and costs at the Atwood copper mine in the Lordsburg ( Virginia ) Mining District of Hidalgo County , N. Mex . , is one of a series being prepared by the Mining Division of the Bureau of Mines on mining practices , methods , and costs in various mining districts of the United States . The mine and surface plant are situated in the west half of sec . 7 , T. 23 S. , R. 18 W. , about 3 miles by road southwest of the center of Lordsburg , near the old abandoned townsite of Valedon ( see fig . 1 ) . The main line of the Southern Pacific Railroad passes through Lordsburg , as does the paved eastwest U. S. Highway 70-80 . A spur line of the Southern Pacific ends near the mine . A good graded road connects the mine with Lordsburg . The following pages present a brief history of the district , describe the geology , and outline methods of prospecting and exploration, including sampling and estimations of tonnages and values . Development, and mining methods are explained , and transportation , ventilation , drainage ,. safety measures , and organization are described . The wage scale and costs of development and mining comprise the corrcluding sections of this circular .
