Pure respirable quartz is a known pathogenic agent for lung disease. However, for mixed dusts, neither mineralogical nor in vitro cytotoxicity assays unequivocally predict the contribution of quartz to their pathogenic potential.First, although Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis (CWP) and Progressive Massive Fibrosis (PMF) prevalence have been found to correlate with total respirable coal mine dust exposure, and with coal rank (Attfield and Morring, 1992), epidemiological studies generally have not found the quartz component of coal mine dust as measured by X-ray diffraction or infrared spectroscopy (each of which essentially measures the mass-percent quartz in a bulk sample) to be clear predictors of CWP prevalence or incidence (Walton et al., 1971). Second, the properties which distinguish the extreme fibrogenic potential of quartz are not revealed by conventional in vitro bioassay comparison with other silicate mineral dusts. As an example, quartz and kaolin (aluminosilicate) clay in vitro cytotoxicities are comparable for lavaged primary pulmonary macrophages.The studies discussed here address these two anomalies from a general hypothesis that the pathogenic activity of respired quartz particles is associated with properties of, and interactions with, the particle surfaces. One factor in the expression of toxic activity by a particle surface is the biological availability of that surface. Anomalous lack of correlation of disease prevalence with mass percent quartz in exposures to some mixed composition respirable-sized dusts suggests that individual particle surface features, invisible by bulk sample mass analysis, may alter the biological availability of a fraction of quartz particles in a dust. For pure-surfaced mineral particles, the comparably strong prompt membranolytic activities of quartz and kaolin in vitro suggest that upon deposition of such particles in the lung there must be other interactions with particle surfaces which distinguish quartz. This might be due to toxic surface-associated sites specific to silica, or to interactions of other sites on other mineral particles which affect the biological availability of their toxic functional groups. For example, alurninol groups on clays affect the availability or activity of adjacent silanol groups. Surface activities which distinguish quartz pathogenici ty might be manifest in one or more of the sequential interactions upon deposition in the lung; first with the pulmonary surfactant system, then with extracellular and phagolysosomal enzymatic digestive processes, or with subsequent cytotoxic processes.

Gas drainage through surface bore¬holes has been the conventional means of methane control for U.S. longwall gobs. However, these vertical boreholes are becoming so costly, and the surface rights so difficult to obtain, that the Bureau of Mines is developing underground gob gas drainage as an alternate means of methane control for U.S. longwal..ls. Holes are drilled into the roof over the panel and on retreating longwalls, towards the working face from a location inby the face. As the longwall retreats, an increasing portion of the hole inter¬cepts the fracture system over the caved gob. A surface exhauster maintains a vacuum on a pipeline parelleling the panel and draws the methane mixture out of the mine. Auxiliary systems of gob gas drain¬age during longwall mining will be essen¬tial for an increasing number of coal mines. Deep and gassy mines often find ventilation insufficient for adequate dilution of methane in bleeder entries. Although this cross-measure method of degasification has been used successfully in Europe, some of the European tech¬niques cannot be directly applied to U.S. mines. This is the first study of its kind in this country.

Improve the safety and comfort of operators of large mining equipment. Approach Develop an improved driver restraint system that is easy to use, reliable, and cost-effective, while providing increased protection in the event of a collision or rollover. The Novel Restraint System There are several problems associated with conventional lap-belt type restraint systems. Among these are: restriction of movement, lack of comfort, and fear of entrapment. Standard seatbelts become dirty and oily from lying on the vehicle cab floor and can ruin a driver's clothes. Some haulage equipment may not even have seatbelts available to drivers since they are sometimes removed during maintenance activities or as a result of vandalism. Recognizing a need to address such problems by providing a more acceptable means of driver restraint, the Bureau of Mines designed and fabricated a novel vest-type restraint system. The vest is designed to be worn during a driver's 8-hour shift and would be issued much like safety glasses, hard hats and safety shoes, thus becoming part of the operator's individual protective equipment and assuring that each vehicle has a restraint system when in operation. "Electron spin resonance measurements provide evidence for the formation of long-lived Cr(V) intermediates in the reduction of Cr(Vl) by glutathione redtuctase in the presence of NADPH and for the hydroxyl radical formation during the glutathione reductase catalyzed reduction of Cr(Vl). Hydrogen peroxide suppresses Cr(V) and enhances the formation of hydroxyl radicals. Thus Cr(V) intermediates catalyze generation of hydroxyl radicals from hydrogen peroxide through a Fenton-like reaction. Thus the mechanism of Cr(VI) toxicity might involve the interaction between macromolecules and the hydroxyl radicals.C(Vl) compounds have been found to exert serious toxic and carcinogenic effects on humans and animals (1-3). In contrast, most Cr(III) compounds are relatively nontoxic, noncarcinogenic, and nonmutagenic (1,4). Cr(VI) and Cr(III) oxidation states are different in their metabolic pathways: Cr(VI) , ions are rapidly transported across cellular membrane (1,4,5), while Cr[III) moieties do not easily penetrate cells and are not oxidized by cellular constituents (!). Since it is known that the reduction of Cr(VI) ion is required for its reaction with DNA (1), the molecular mechanisms for the intracellular Cr(Vl) reduction has been the focus of current studies but the details are still not understood.Earlier studies on the mechanism of Cr(Vl) reduction include those on the reduction of Cr(VIJ by glutathione (GSH) .0,6-8), ascorbic acid (9), glucose (10), lactose (IO), galacturonic acid (11), microsome (12), and mitochondrial electron transport chain complexes (13). These studies have shown that the Cr(VI) reduction involves the formation of Cr(V)-containing species which are often considered to be the toxic form of chromium. Thus far, however, no information is· available on the subsequent fate of those biologically formed Cr(V) species, in particular employing well defined biochemical systems. In this context, we report here our investigations of the reduction of Cr(VI) by glutathione reductase (GSSG-R). This enzyme was selected because it is ubiquitously present in cellular systems and it has been postulated to be involved in the Cr(VI) reduction (14-17) but the underlying mechanism has not been clarified. We find that the reduction proces·s involves not only Cr(V) but also ·OH radicals. We further investigate the reactivity of Cr(V) and find that it catalyzes generation of OH radical from H2O 2 through a Fenton-like reaction. The role of ·OH in Cr(VI) carcinogenicity is suggested from this study."

"Previous investigations, too numerous to be listed in entirety, have been performed to determine the physical properties of rock. When considered according to their objectives, most of these investigations can be grouped as follows: First, the geologic group (1,2),4/ in which the purpose was to obtain information on the physical properties of the rocks that make up the earth's crust. Particular emphasis has been placed on the determination of the elastic constants--that is, Young's modulus, the modules of rigidity, and Poisson's ratio – as these quantities determine the propagation characteristics of seismic waves. Second, the structural properties group (3 - 11), in which the physical properties of architectural or monumental stone, concrete and aggregate rock, road blocks (cobblestone), and the like were desired. The tests have been quite general and include, besides the elastic properties; the compressive and tensile strength, and the toughness, hardness, and weathering properties of many types of rocks.To .a lesser degree, investigations have been carried out to determine the physical properties of mine rock. A few reports (12 - 14) present data on the crushability and grindability of mine rock, and a large number of papers discuss grinding and crushing procedures and methods of analyzing the data (for example, see references 15 - 17). Some of the latter group also have given the results of tests on mine rock; however, comparatively few include an adequate petrographic description or information on other physical properties of the rock. A few papers,(18 - 22) have reported studies of the strength of rock specimens in respect to the strength of parts of mine structures, such as pillars, roof, arches, etc. Other papers (23 - 26) have discussed investigations on such subjects as primary and secondary crushing, diamond and pneumatic rock drilling, explosive breaking and shattering of rock, rate of drifting and miring, and other allied problems. The majority of these reports have given no more than a cursory, description of the rocks and have included no statement regarding the physical properties. When statements have been given regarding the physical properties, they have usually referred only to isolated tests, making correlations between variations in the physical properties and variations in the .test under consideration difficult, if not impossible. Some reports have included handbook values on such characteristics as the crushing strength, hardness, and toughness. This practice is not satisfactory, because these values are usually given for col¬lective types of rocks, such as granites, limestones, and marbles, and it is known that the variations of the physical properties within these groups is often larger than the differences between the groups."

"INTRODUCTION The Mayfield manganese property is about 25 miles south of Van Horn, in Jeff Davis County, Tex. The ore deposit is developed by a large open-cut and a small stope.An 8-ton sample was received for testing; it was taker at random from material on the mine dumps and consisted of a mixture of manganese oxides, barite, and siliceous gangue minerals. The manganese occurred largely as hard, massive, crystalline psilomelane, with a small amount of pyrolusite. The gangue minerals consisted of intermixed iron-stained sand stone, quartzite, chalcedony, calcite, quartz, and barite. Chemical analysis showed 8.9 percent manganese, 3.3 percent iron, 38.4 percent silica, 6.6 percent calcium carbonate, 7.1 percent barium, 3.1 percent alumina, 0.09 percent phosphorus 0.01 tungstic oxide, and less than 0.05 percentAnalysis of selected clean pieces of manganese minerals, free of gangue, showed 48.1 percent manganese end 13.4 percent barium, of which only 0.2 percent was present as barium sulfate. This indicated a limit in concentration. Barium was also present in the gangue as a separate mineral, barite (BaSO4), which has approximately the same specific gravity as the manganese oxide."

Application of Proposed Revised Standards 57.11-50 to Mines Surveyed 3.1 Subparagraph (a) 1 "Each mine shall have at least two separate and properly maintained escapeways from each working place to the surface which are so positioned that physical or environmental damage to one will not lessen the effective¬ness of the other, and which meet the requirements of travelways and man hoisting standards These escape¬ways shall reach to within 1000 feet horizontally or 300 feet vertically of each working place " 3. 1. 1 Discussion This section will deal with the 1000 and 300 feet distance requirements, Section 3. 5 will deal with the "environmental damage" provisions. During the course of the mine surveys, it became obvious that one mine's 1000 foot distance was nowhere near equal to another' s --not in the actual distance but in the time required to traverse that distance. This -Ls true for the 300-foot requirement as well. The most obvious example is that one could traverse down a 300-foot raise much faster than climbing up the same distance. The temptation is strong to recommend that the distance requirement be changed to travel times instead. However, this approach would unfortunately lead to a lot of subjective evaluations. Having a time requirement for an entire mine evacuation (Subparagraph 6) is one thing, time requirements and the requisite inspection proce¬dures for each working place are quite another.

Reduce shaft sinking costs and workers exposure to mechanical hazards, drill dust, blast dangers, and fumes. Approach Replace drilling and blasting by using a large, cab-mounted impact breaker suspended from the bottom work deck of the galloway. How It Works The pneumatically actuated impact breaker is positioned by an articulated boom con-trolled from an operators cab. The breaker delivers 2,000 ft-lb blows that fragment the rock at the shaft bottom. Mucking is accomplished by a backhoe bucket on an articulated boom mounted on the cab. See photograph. The mucked material can be removed either by dumping into a previously drilled borehole or by being lifted out in a muck bucket as shown in the drawing. Positioning of the breaker, rotating the cab around its vertical axis, and moving the cab support frame around the perimeter of the shaft are all controlled by one joystick. Separate controls position the mucker boom, which can be swung horizontally through a 180° degree arc towards either side of the cab. Because the cab can be rotated to any position around its vertical axis, and can also be moved in a horizontal circle around the shaft, virtually any position on the bottom of the shaft can be reached by the breaker and mucker.

The goal of blasting is to get maximum fragmentation of the consolidated material in the overburden with optimum drilling and blasting cost. The amount of fragmentation required is determined by the stripping unit to be used In overburden removal. Many coal seams must also be broken by blasting; this is conducted before coal removal. There are environmental factors as well as due regard for public safety, health, and welfare that must be considered in choosing the blasting plan. The blasting plan should be made during preplanning and is based on data from the overburden cores. Analysis of the data will help In determining the kind of drilling equipment and bit types that will be needed for overburden preparation.

"The premium on gold in London, reflecting the further depreciation of the pound sterling, has risen from about 22 per cent as noted in these reports for December, to about 28%. This will enable more South African gold mines to come into the profitably ;reducing class, and will also tend to increase the gold production from that region.Figures are now at hand showing the drop that occured in the sold output in the Transvaal, South Africa, during 1919, in which year 8,330,091 ounces of gold were produced against 8,418, 292 ounces in 1918, a decrease of 88,200 ounces. Annual gold output from this, the most important gold area in the world, has dropped almost one million ounces in the past three years, as the following table shows:Although the decrease in not as marked comparatively as that of 1918 over 1917, it is a further indication of the general world-wide curtailment of gold production, and the steady decline in production everywhere that is going on and will continue until some rational means is found to stimulate production, or until conditions return to normal.The subject of relief for the gold miner has received attention in all parts of the world, particularly in the United States and South Africa in the past few years, but in spite of all the plane that have been formulated to remedy the situation none have yet been adopted anywhere, due mainly to great danger of tampering with the gold standard. In the United. States a plan has advanced by H. N. Lawrie of the American Mining Congress to tax the new gold entering into manufacture of jewelry or the arts in general, as furnishing some measure of increased compensation to unprofitable gold mining.Gold production in Australia, as indication by figures issued by the Australian Mines department, shows a marked decrease, and for the first ten months of 1919 amounted to 914,957 ounces against 1,073,317 ounces for a similar period in 1918. Western Australia produces about two thirds of all the gold rained on that continent. The total gold production of Australia for 1919 will reflect the universal decrease in output.Ever since June 7, when the embargo on the export of gold Was lifted, there has been steady and heavy outflow of gold from this country, as a consequence of which considerable gold accumulated during the war has been exported. Numerous alternative processes have been proposed as being potentially more economical or less polluting than the traditional smelting of copper sulfide concentrates. One such process as recently developed in the laboratory by the Bureau of Mines is composed of a two-stage fluid-bed, oxidation-reduction roasting followed by ammoniacal leaching, solvent extraction, and electrowinning. A copper-leaching recovery of 97.4 percent was obtained, and electrolysis of the acid strip solution deposited metal assaying 99.99 percent copper. The roaster gases contain over 95 percent of the sulfur at a concentration of 12 percent which is better suited for acid making or elemental sulfur production than conventional smelter gas. When considering byproduct recovery, a preliminary estimate indicates copper production costs are com-parable to the conventional smelters.

Water pollution has been an integral part of most mining operations in the past. Most mine planners had designed their mining operations with little or no regard for prevention of water pollution. The main planning element was always the economics of mineral recovery. Quite often the cheapest means of mineral recovery resulted in the largest water pollution problems. Recent water pollution laws have introduced a new economic element - water pollution control costs - to be considered in mine planning. Water pollution control costs can be extremely high. Foresighted planning can minimize these costs and provide better water pollution control. Effective pollution control preplanning can eliminate pollution from active mines and minimize pollution that may occur after completion of mining. Presently available technology can practically eliminate water pollution by treatment of the mine water. Use of water treatment during mining has no effect on the levels of water pollution after treatment ceases and the mine is abandoned. Therefore, this section of the report deals with preplanning to reduce water pollution, both present and future, by using at-source control techniques. Proper planning of mining and pollution control techniques should follow the concept of a complete, comprehensive reclamation plan. This plan should have control measures designed for all phases of mining from initiation through completion. Preplanning involves acquiring complete information concerning the future mine site, defining the reasons why mining could cause pollution from the site, and determination of available techniques to prevent or minimize formation or transportation of pollutants. Location of haulage and access roads and other mine related facilities should be included in preplanning for water pollution control. The Bureau of Mines studied 780 acres of the 24,130-acre Sheldon Contiguous Wilderness Study Area (CA-020-1012) in 1985. The study was done at the request of the Bureau of Land Management and authorized under the Federal Land Policy and Management Act (Public Law 94-579, October 21, 1 976) in order to evaluate the mineral resources. The study area is located in Washoe County, NV, about 35 miles northeast of Cedarville, CA. A search of county courthouse records and an examination by foot traverses through and adjacent to the study area did not reveal evidence of any mining or mining exploration activity past or present. In addition, evidence of any form of rock alteration was not observed. Evidence of mineral resources is not apparent. Although basalt, the only rock-type present in the study area, can have some limited industrial applications, sources closer to potential markets probably would preclude rock from this area being economically competitive. INTRODUCTION This report describes the USBM (U.S. Bureau of Mines) portion of a cooperative study with the USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) to evaluate mineral resources and potential of the Sheldon Contiguous study area at the request of the BLM (U.S. Bureau of Land Management). The USBM examines individual mines, prospects, claims, and mineralized zones, and evaluates identified mineral and energy resources. The USGS evaluates potential for undiscovered resources based on areal geological, geochemical, and geophysical surveys. Results of the investigations will be used to help determine the suitability of the study area for inclusion into the National Wilderness Preservation System. Although the immediate goal of this and other USBM mineral surveys ;s to provide data for President, Congress, government agencies, and the public for land-use decisions, the long-term objective is to ensure the Nation has an adequate and dependable supply of minerals at a reasonable cost.

The Valery fluorspar deposit , also known as the Hamilton deposit , is northeast of Lovelock and 4 miles by poor dirt road east of U. S. Highway 40 . It is in the Humboldt Mining District , on the west side of the Humboldt Range , at an altitude of 6,000 to 6,500 feet . The property was examined by the Bureau of Mines on February 83/ and April 8 , 1944.4/ The last examination was made with an engineer of the Geological Survey.5/ Exploring by means of trenches , cuts , shaft sinking , coyote holes off the shaft , and a small amount of prospecting with short drill holes , was begun in January 1945 and was completed June 30 , 1945. An engineer6/ of the Geological Survey visited the property in April and again in June 1945 to complete a topographic map of the area and to note the results of exploration by the Bureau of Mines . Only minor surface exploring had been done on fluorspar occurrences previous to the Bureau's work . No mining equipment or living facilities are on the property .

Reduce costs of surface mine reclamation by improving scaper operating efficiency and reducing tire costs. Approach The Wheel Slip Monitor senses and compares the peripheral speed of a scraper's four tires 10 the true ground speed of the scraper, and alerts the operator if any of the tires exceeds a predetermined amount of slip. This system helps scraper operators reduce wheel slip during the loading cycle, thereby improving the loading efficiency of the scaper and reducing tire wear and damage. How It Works The system consists of five ultrasonic doppler velocity-sensing devices for measuring the speed of each wheel as well as the true ground velocity (see photograph). Each sensor produces an electrical output signal having a frequency proportional to the speed of the tire or terrain. The signals are conveyed through electrical cables to a control box in the operator's cab where they are converted to voltages proportional to individual wheel speeds (see photograph). The signals are further processed to activate a blinking red light, corresponding to any individual wheel which is slipping, and to sound a beeping tone that is audible to the scraper operator. The rate at which the light blinks and the tone beeps is proportional to the degree of slip. Alerted, the operator can take corrective action.

Produce an annotated bibliography to serve as a comprehensive source of published information available on the use of soil amendments in coal mine reclamation and the characterization of coal mine soils. The Problem There is a substantial amount of information available tin coal mine reclamation and revegetation, particularly on the use of soil amendments to ameliorate site conditions and aid vegetation establishment, growth development, and productivity. Additionally, site characterizations based on chemical, physical, and mineralogical properties have been thoroughly researched. This information, however, is widely disseminated throughout various professional and scientific journals, State and Federal documents, proceedings of conferences, theses, and other technical writings. A critical need exists for a comprehensive and up-to-date summary of published information concerning the uses, methodologies, and types of soil amendments that arc necessary for reclamation success.

The Code of Federal Regulations Title 30, Parts 56, 57, 75, and 77 require that detonators and explosives be separated by four inches of hardwood or equivalents when transported together in mines. This standard was developed to protect the explosives from initiation by the more sensitive detonators. The research reported here is an attempt to quantify the fire protection offered by four inches of red oak and other materials. Boxes with a volume of 6.75 cubic feet were made from four-inch thick rough green oak (RGO), two-inch thick RGO plied, two-inch thick #1 common (dried) red oak plied, and a metal/plywood composite. These and boxes meeting the Institute of Makers of Explosives' (IME) Safety Library Publication No. 22 were tested in bonfires. The boxes were instrumented with thermocouples, filled with detonators, and placed over a kerosene fire imparting about 16 kilowatts per square meter heat flux for up to 3 hours. Tests showed that the wood boxes protected the detonators for over an hour with variations between the different trials. In the IME 22 container tests, detonators began exploding in as little as 17 minutes in one test and not for 2-/12 hours in another test. Detonators in the metal/plywood boxes began to explode in about 15 minutes but with minor alterations, were able to contain the detonators. The test results show that the exterior of an IME 22 container significantly affects its thermal properties. Defects in the form of cracks and the manner in which the container is closed have a significant effect on the performance of a detonator container in a fire.

The Bureau of Mines developed a method for analyzing elastically certain types of protective cabs and canopies used on underground electric face equipment. The method is based on plane frame theory, and to be amenable to analysis by this method, cabs and canopies must contain symmetry about one plane. Additionally, protective structures with one or more top members in the long direction that do not frame into the columns should be approximately twice as long as they are wide and have two or more internal top members in the short direction. The assumptions and limitations of the plane frame method as regards analysis of three-dimensional cabs and canopies are discussed. A step-by-step procedure for application of the plane frame method is given, and three example canopies are analyzed following this procedure. Elastic strengths calculated for the three example canopies compare within 10 percent of those computed by the more complicated space frame analysis. Formulas employed in plane frame analysis of cabs and canopies are given in the appendixes.

As part of its goal to minimize the requirements for mineral commodities through conservation and substitution, the Bureau of Mines is conducting research to determine the resistance of alumina refractories to corrosion by alkali-containing slags that could result from burning of the abundant Western lignites in metallurgical operations. Static corrosion tests were performed at 1,000° to 1,350° C and dynamic tests were performed at 1,400° to 1,600° C to investigate the stability of refractory specimens in slag environments. In general, the degree of refractory attack increased with decreasing alumina content in the refractory and with increasing alkali content of the lignite ash. The parabolic kinetics observed in static tests suggested that a reaction product layer is formed through which ionic diffusion must occur to sustain the reaction with the refractory material. The linear kinetics observed in dynamic tests in high-viscosity slags indicated a shearing of the reaction product layer by viscous slags. The observed lesser attack of refractories by low-viscosity slags can be explained on this basis. Two 99-percent-alumina refractories and two 90-percent-alumina refractories formed an expanded protective layer with the more viscous slags but not with the less viscous slags. Corrosion of 90-percent-alumina refractories increased exponentially with temperature. In refractories with the same nominal alumina content, those that contain a combination of a-Al203 and mullite (3A1203?2Si02) have better corrosion resistance than those containing a combination of a-Al203, cristobalite (Si02 mineral), and mullite. In alkali environments (1,300 to 1,400° C), 90-to 99-percent-alumina refractories are recommended for use as furnace linings.

The Bureau of Mines air-sealed a 77-acre) above-drainage coal mine to evaluate sealing as a means of reducing the acid and metallic salt contents in drainage from abandoned mines. An approximate reduction in acidity of 150 ppm (equivalent to 193 pounds per day) and in iron of 98 ppm were directly attributed to sealing. The topographical, hydrological, and other factors involved in air-sealing are discussed, and the construction used to seal the mine is described.
