The programs are interactive in that they prompt the user for input data and allow correction and modification to be made. The programs read data from the results of cone penetrometer soundings and convert the data to values of tan ø. Mean, standard deviation, skew, kurtosis, linear trends and autocorralation are computed by the programs.

Information is presented on the pressure and rate of pressure development during a dust explosion . The data were obtained in laboratory studies in a 75- cubic inch vessel with mineral , agricultural and chemical dusts . The factors investigated include dust concentration , oxygen concentration of the atmosphere , admixed inert powder , and admixed moisture . Information is given also on the effects of these factors on the composition of the atmosphere after the explosion .

The output or oil and gas rrom the producing fields in the United States is rapidly deelining. Coincident with this decline is a steadily increasing demand ror petroleum and its products, but at present there are no commercial substitutes ror gasoline and lubricating oil. Undoubtedly, many new fields will be discovered in this country during the next rew years. Indeed, there may be periods or temporary flush production that ror a rew months or a year or perhaps two years will afford a surplus. Such peaks are temporary and should not be given too much weight in considering the relation between petroleum supply and our national lire. In considering this problem we must regard a long period or time, and, ir we do that we shall see that domestic production will be unable to keep pace with consumption. Hence, the public good demands t~at the highest efficiency obtainable be practiced in the production or oil. To accomplish this end, the operator or to-day should so organize his rorces ror development and production that he recovers every barrel or oil that can be recovered at a profit. This necessarily involves the use or eeonomical and scientific methods or development a:nd production and the elimination or waste. The Bureau or Mines has ror years urged the conservation or petroleum and its products, and has pointed out that -such conservation should start before the oil is brought to the surface rather than arter it is in storage tanks. Losses or petroleum underground have undoubtedly been rar greater than losses in storage, in transportation, and in refining. The quantity lost usually is indeterminate, and hence difficult to express in terms or money, but by remembering that entire oil fields have been ruined by invadIng waters some idea may be gained or the importance or underground waste. The petroleum engineer is coming to be recognized as an extremely important aid in the intelligent development or oil fields. In this paper an effort is made to outline ror the engineer and producer a field or work whereby science and engineering not only can but have been applied practically. The mining engineer has been the direct- ing hand in the development of mines, and it is being recognized more and more that the petroleum engineer has a similar function in developing oil properties. Thispaper aims to show the general method of procedure in studying underground conditions in producing oil fields and how such study may not only correct but even prevent great unnecessary losses. Such work provides the company with maximum insurance for the field against loss and is accompliphed at minimum cost and minimum risk. Throughout the paper reference is made to oil wells and oil fields, but to a certain degree many of the suggestions relating to oil wells are applicable in the care and protection of gas wells and in solving gas problems.

Batch and continuous - circuit flotation , leaching , precipitation , and electrodeposition studies were made by the Bureau of Mines to determine optimum conditions for treatment of complex mercury - antimony sulfide and mercury- arsenic sulfide ores and concentrates . On the Red Devil ore sample over 95 percent of both the mercury and antimony sulfides were recovered in a flotation concentrate containing 35.6 percent mercury and 21.0 percent antimony . By selective flotation a mercury concentrate containing 71.0 percent mercury and 2.9 percent antimony was obtained with a mercury recovery of 90.4 percent . Leaching results show that , with 150 grams per liter of sodium sulfide and 50 grams per liter of sodium hydroxide , 95 to 99 percent of the mercury , antimony , and arsenic sulfides could be extracted from the concentrates treated . Sodium hydroxide reagent consumption was based on the sulfides generated in the dissolution of the sulfide minerals and on the method of metal recovery used . Selective leaching of the antimony and arsenic sulfides with potassium sulfide dissolved more than 95 percent of either of these two sulfides and 0.5 to 5 percent of the mercury sulfide present . Methods for recovering mercury and antimony from solution were electrodeposition of mercury followed by electrodeposition of antimony , aluminum precipitation of both mercury and antimony , or antimony precipitation of mercury followed by antimony electrodeposition . The two major lung diseases of miners are "blacklung" and silicosis. Blacklung, or pneumoconiosis, was first recognized as a disease of British coal miners in the 1600s. However, investigations into the cause of blacklung disease did not begin until the 1900s. The causative agent of pneumoconiosis in coal miners was thought to be silica until studies in the United Kingdom provided evidence that expo- sure to coal dust containing minimal silica could also cause pneumoconiosis. In the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, coal workers pneumoconiosis (CWP) was defined as "a chronic dust disease of the lung arising out of employment in an underground coal mine." Diagnosis of CWP is generally based on chest x-ray findings and a patient's history of working in coal mines, usually for 10 or more years. In its early stages, CWP is called "simple CWP." Miners with simple CWP are at increased risk of developing an advanced stage of the disease, called "progressive massive fibrosis" pMF) or "complicated CWP." PMF (complicated CWP) is associated with significant decreases in lung function and oxygen- diffusing capacity. PMF is also associated with breathlessness, chronic bronchitis, recurrent chest illness, and episodes of heart failure. Coal miners with silicotic lesions or PMF have an increased risk of tuberculosis and other mycobacterial infections. PMF may progress even in the absence of further dust exposure. This disease is also associated with increased mortality (National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health [NIOSH] 1995). The most recent study to determine the prevalence of CWP in coal workers was in the mid- 1990s. The average prevalence of CWP was 2.8%, but for those with 30 or more years in the industry it was 14%. For the 10-year period from 1987 to 1996, 18,245 deaths were attributed to CWP. The most frequently recorded occupation on the death certificate (70%) was mining machine operator (NIOSH 1999). Silicosis may develop when inhaled respirable crystalline silica (quartz) is deposited in the lungs. The clinical diagnosis of silicosis is based on (1) recognition by the physician that the level of silica exposure is adequate to cause the disease, (2) the presence of chest radiographic abnormalities consistent with silicosis, and (3) the absence of other illnesses (e.g., tuberculosis or pulmonary fungal infection) that may mimic silicosis. The radiographic patterns are often the same for CWP and silicosis; thus, these diseases are sometimes distinguishable only by work history or pathological examination. Chronic silicosis commonly involves 15 or more years of exposure to silica. The characteristic microscopic feature is the silicotic nodule. Chronic silicosis is often asymptomatic and may manifest itself as a radiographic abnormality with small, rounded opacities of less than 10 mm in diameter, predominantly in the upper lobes. Lung function may be normal or show mild restriction. Chronic silicosis is also associated with a predisposition to tuberculosis and other mycobacterial infections and with progression to complicated silicosis.

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, has investigated the extraction of alumina from domestic kaolin clay by leaching with boiling 26 wt-pct hydrochloric acid. Acid leaching of crushed calcined kaolin feed yields slurries that are slow settling and difficult to filter because of the presence of fine particles generated in crushing, calcining, and leaching. Laboratory research showed that tumbling and moistening crushed raw kaolin on a pelletizing disk caused the fines to agglomerate on the surfaces of the larger particles, while the sharp edges and corners of the larger particles were rounded off. Minus 16-mesh crushed raw kaolin was misted on a 36-in-diam, 8-in-deep pelletizing disk at rates of 175 to 250 lb/hr, and was calcined in either a rotary or a fluidized-bed calciner; negligible degradation occurred. The physical properties of the misted calcined kaolin were evaluated in the leaching system of the clay-hydrochloric acid miniplant. Only minor attrition occurred during leaching, and the slurry was readily filtered on a continuous belt filter.

"IntroductionMassive sulphides occurring in metal mines are inflammable and furnish the fuel for many mine fires. Actual sampling has shown that dangerous amounts of sulphur dioxide and hydrogen sulphide may occur in mine atmospheres after blasting in massive sulphides. Probably some .of the finer sulphide in the material being blasted burns while it is in contact with the flame from the explosion. It’s also possible that oxygen of the explosive enters into the reaction.That sulphide dusts are explosive under some conditions has long been suspected, but the theory has not been generally accepted as having been proved. Evidence now at hand appears to be conclusive that such explosions do occasionally occur in mine workings in massive sulphides. Information from several mines working in heavy sulphides shows that occasionally, sulphur dioxide in larger amounts than could be expected from the blasting alone are occasionally thrown out into the mine atmosphere during blasting. Accidents have occurred and lives have been lost by men being caught in such gases. Also it appears in a few cases that damage done to timber in stopes by concussions has been greater than could 112.ve been expected from the regular blasts. In most of these cases the unusually large amounts of Sulphur dioxide could only be accounted for by an explosion or by an ignition of sulphide dusts. When this occurs it is probable that the settled dust is stirred up by the first shot of a round, then the dust cloud is ignited by this or a succeeding shot.In one instance, the senior author, while wearing breathing apparatus, returned to a station to take a gas sample immediately after a raise round had been blasted, and encountered a heavy white fume or smoke that was corrosive to the skin and which forced a retreat. The sample, which was taken farther back in a greatly diluted atmosphere, showed a high percentage (0.18) of sulphur dioxide. The station and the raise which was just being started were very dry and the walls and floor of the station contained settled sulphide dust which apparently was ignited by the blast."

In support of its goal to maintain an adequate supply of minerals to meet national economic and strategic needs, the Bureau of Mines has investigated a novel hydrometallurgical system with sulfur dioxide. Differential leaching with dissolved SO2 of manganese, nickel, and cobalt from their hydrous oxides was found to be very rapid and efficient--almost instantaneous and quantitative. In this method a given weight of mixed oxides previously ground to minus 200-mesh is slurried with a leach solution containing a specified quantity of dissolved SO2 for 10 minutes at room temperature and ambient pressure. An empirical leaching parameter, R, is defined as the ratio of the number of SO2 moles in the leaching solution to the weight of the metal oxide charge. Plots of the variation of metal extraction with the ratio R generate a series of sigmoidal-shaped curves, each of which is characteristic of a specific metal extraction. A threshold value of R is required to initiate the leaching of a given metal from the mixed oxides. Once this threshold is reached, the metal recovery can increase to more than 95 pct in very short times. For increasing values of R, the extractability of various metals by SO2 follows the order: Mn > Ni > Co >> Fe, Al, Cu. Differences in the threshold R values permit a variety of metal separations to be made simply by adjusting the quantity of SO2 in the contacting solution. Success in this leaching system depends upon comminuting the sea nodules to less than 0.149 mm (100-mesh). Above this critical size, leaching is slowed due to the inaccessibility of inner particle reacting groups to the SO2 leaching agent. This results in nonselective extraction and less extraction of preferred metal values. At or below 0.149 mm, leaching by SO, is possible with all its attributes of selectivity, sensitivity, and rapidity. Leaching with HC1 solutions of the same pH level as dissolved SO2 yielded mixed, slow, and incomplete metal extractions. This observation rules out any interpretation based on hydrogen ion as the leaching agent. The leaching curves resemble the complexometric titration curves of heavy metals with specific coordination species.

Helium has probably aroused more varied scientific curiosity than any other single element. Discovered by spectroscopic examination of the sun during an eclipse in 1868, helium is now known to exist not only in the sun and other stars but on earth occluded in minerals, accumulated with natural gases in pockets in the earth's crust, and in the atmosphere surrounding the earth. Astronomers study its presence in the various stars of the universe for clues to their origin and history. Geochemists and geologists study its occurrences in rocks, minerals, and meteorites to determine the age of the earth and the manner of its formation. Pathologists study its effect on living tissues in search for the ideal combination with oxygen for artificial breathing mixtures in medicine, diving operations, and space vehicles. Chemists study its physical properties and use it to trace the sequence of events in reactions in which it does not participate. Geneticists and bacteriologists use it for special studies. Physicists study its behavior when liquefied and the behavior of materials cooled to nearly absolute zero by its use. Nuclear physicists learn more about the universe through study of the nuclear reactions that produce it. Through study of helium and greater knowledge of its origin and properties, science continues to unlock some of nature's more closely guarded secrets. Unknown on earth before 1895, and not discovered as a minor constituent of natural gas until 1905, helium with its simple atomic structure--a nucleus with two electrons orbiting in a closed shell--is a unique element. It is next to the lightest gas, only hydrogen is lighter. It occupies position number 2 in the Periodic Table of the Elements and heads the list of so-called "rare" or ?noble? gases. Most of the naturally occurring helium has an atomic mass of 4.003874 (oxygen = 16). A trace (1.7 x 10-5 mol percent) is the light isotope helium-3 whose atomic mass is 3.0169800 Unstable isotopes of mass numbers 5 and 6 have been authenticated. Isotopes of mass numbers 7 and 8 have been reported, but their existence is less well established. All the heavier isotopes are radioactive and are the product of nuclear reactions.

Several studies have suggested that pulmonary toxicity to asbestos and silica may be mediated through oxidant-induced cell injury. We have reported recently that surface radicals associated with freshly fractured silica may be an imponant factor in cell injury and induction of pulmonary disease. Although the generation of oxygenated radicals in dust-cell interactions has been demonstrated, there are no data correlating the toxicity of a dust with the level of oxygen radical generation by the dust during its interaction with phagocytic cells. In the present study, we have investigated the in vitro generation of oxygen free radicals from human neutrophils and rat alveolar macrophages stimulated with freshly fractured silica, aged silica, amosite, crocidolite, chrysotilc, and a nontoxic dust, barite. Electron spin resonance (ESR) with the aid of a spin trap phenyl-N-ten-butyl nitronc (PBN) was used to measure the oxygen radicals generated during phagocytosis of the dusts. The relative toxicity index and ESR peak heights, on an equal surface area basis and normalized to barite as one, showed a direct relationship. The normalized toxicity indices and peak heights were: silica, 3.5 versus 2; chrysotile, 4 versus 2; crocidolite, 11 versus 8; and amosite, 26 versus 13. Addition of hydroxyl radical scavengers such as catalase, dimethyl sulfoxide, 1,3 dimethyl-2-thiourea (DMTU), sodium benzoate, and mannitol prevented the radical generation. Carmustine, a glutathione reductase- glutathione peroxidase inhibitor, caused a 5-fold increase in the radical generation. These results indicate that a nontoxic dust such as barite generates toxic oxygen radicals at a minimal level that can be quenched by the normal cellular defense system. For toxic dusts such as silica, amositc, chrysotile, and crocidolite, the potential for oxygen radical generation is enhanced by their surface propenies, physical dimensions, and the surface-based radical-generating redox sites. The enhanced radical generation may impair the cellular defense system, resulting in cell injury. Use of scavengers, chelators, and potentiating agents suggests the membrane-based oxidase system as the probable primary source of the radical-generating system. The data presented herein suggest the generation of oxygen free radicals as an important primary event in silica- as well as asbestos-induced cell injury.

In this island, which is a Crown colony of the British Empire, and where remarkably extensive remains of ancient mining operations-- mainly for copper--exist, the mining law of Turkey governs, rith such modifications as were made necessary by the transfer of the country in 1878 from Turkey to Great Britain, and with such fer ameliorations thereof as have since been ordered by the local authorities. The Turkish law to which Van agenen refers is, no doubt, "2 Shaban, 1285," which though subsequently repealed with respect to Turkey is still in force in Cyprus, inasmuch as the mines regulations (amendment) law of 1925 "is to be read in connection with 2 Shaban, 1285" (articles 61 to 67 of which were repealed by the law of 1925): In the preparation of this digest; access was had to the mines regula- tions (amendment) Iaw, No. 5 of 1882; which Van Wagenen does not mention. Other Cyprian laws, passed since the publication of Van Wagenen's work in 1918, are the following: Eines regulations (amendment) law, 1925, No. 12 of 1925; mining-prospecting permits; notification, No. 539 of 1927; mines regu- lations 1926, No. 1006 of 1926; mines regulations (amendment) rules of court, 1926, No. 144 of 1926; mines regulations (amendment). 1a, 1928, ko. 3 of 1528 (as amended by No. 32 of 1928). Most of these làrs are concerned with the regulation of actual mining operation--safety and sanitary provisions; and, therefore, they ado little important information. The Cyprian Government's official publication says: It is considered that the laws regulating mining in Cyprus are inadequate and antiquated, and a thorough revision is necessary to bring them up to a standard of modern mining practice and to encourage mining ventures in the island. As a preliminary to this the mines regulations, 1926, were issued to govern the workings of the larger mines; and serious attention is now being given to the regulating of prospecting, quarries, machinery in mines, and generally to the bringing of mining in Cyprus into conformity with the other mining countries of the world.

"The use of diesel equipment in underground coal mines is controversial because ""whole diesel exhaust"" is regarded as ""a potential occupational carcinogen"" by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Threshold limit values (TLVs) are recommended for the gaseous pollutants; CO, CO2, NO, NO2, SO2, and some hydrocarbons emitted in diesel exhaust. There is, however, no TLV recommended for diesel exhaust aerosols (DEA) nor is there a standard method for sampling these aerosols.The University of Minnesota and the Bureau of Mines have collaborated to develop a personal diesel exhaust aerosol sampler (PDEAS) which utilizes size selective, inertial impaction and gravimetric analysis. During the field tests of this sampler, numerous air quality measurements were conducted in underground coal mines using diesel equipment. The objective of this report is to present these data and to assess the impact of diesel face haulage equipment on mine air quality.Air quality data were collected in four underground coal mines using continuous mining methods with diesel haulage equipment. Daily samples were collected at the section intake, haulageway, and on haulage vehicles. Both full-and partial-shift samples were collected using a variety of aerosol instruments, including the PDEAS and the micro-orifice, uniform deposit impactor (MOUDI) which sample the mine aerosol diesel exhaust fraction. Two of the mines were also monitored for the major gaseous constituents found in diesel exhaust CO, CO2, NO, NO2, and SO2. These measurements were made by either collecting bag samples for subsequent gas analysis or by Palmes dosimeters.The concentrations of CO, CO2, NO, NO2, and SO2, were well below regulated levels. The mine average DEA concentration determined by the PDEAS in the haulageway for the three mines surveyed using this instrument was 0.79 mg/m3, with a standard deviation of 0.19 mg/m3. DEA contributed 65% of the respirable aerosol, at this location. These results were the same as the mean DEA concentrations calculated from size distribution measurements obtained using the MOUDI. This was 0.78 mg/m3, with a standard deviation of 0.22 mg/m3."

"Except for asthma and pulmonary infections, the types of lung disease that have been of immunologic interest the longest are the various mineral pneumoconioses. Because of their chronicity, type of pathology produced, and well-known immunotoxic properties associated with the dusts inciting them, the pneumoconioses have long drawn attention to the possibility that the immune system has not only been modulated but that its effectors have possibly contributed to their pathogenesis. All of the mineral dusts reviewed here have definite immunomodulating properties and act on various cellular and molecular components of the immune system. Further, each has an immunotoxic potential to induce either hypersensitivity (as in the case of beryllium) or other types of immune injury. This article reviews the immunologic aspects of the four major occupational minerals that have an immunologic impact on the lung: asbestos (particularly chrysotile), silica or quartz, beryllium, and coal mine dust.These agents have many things in common, yet each is distinctive. Although the possibility still exists that these mineral particles can adsorb intrinsic tissue antigens or extrinsic organic antigens to their surfaces and initiate immune responses to the adsorbed antigens, only one, beryllium, can act as an antigen itself. Silica is a profound macrophage toxin and thereby exerts many effects on those factors controlled by macrophages. Asbestos has undergone the most immunologic studies resulting in a much dearer picture of how it may contribute to immunopathology. Coal mine dust is the agent about which least is known immunologically, partly because there is no such thing as purified coal mine dust or a standard by which coal mine dust can be defined. Indeed, there are studies that use only the dust from the ground coal itself, whereas other studies use the total dust collected from air samples of a working mine in the belief that other types of dusts (e.g., silica from roof bolt drilling, from sand ground on the rails by cars, and from surface drilling) contribute to the disease (Figs. 1 to 5). This properly is coal mine dust and is poorly characterized. Yet, workers exposed to these dusts share similar reactive characteristics and they may be considered collectively as well as individually."

"In-mine airborne particulate samples have been successfully collected and the relative amounts of diesel and coal determined using the Laser Raman Quantitative Analysis (LRQA) method. This method allows analysis of filters which have been collected by a method similar to that used to determine the airborne respirable dust concentration in us underground coal mines. Samples were taken near the feeder-breaker, on haulage vehicles, and in the returns. Sampling methodologies were developed for coal-only and diesel-only particulate reference samples with sufficient filter loading for the LRQA method. A statistical analysis of reproducibility has been carried out. Samples have been collected simultaneously at two locations using the LRQA and the size-selective sampling methods. Good agreement between the two methods has been found.INTRODUCTIONThe goal of this research has been to develop the Laser Raman Quantitative Analysis (LRQA) method to measure the composition of respirable particulate, i.e. the fractions of coal and of diesel particulate, in the mine ambient air. In earlier Bureau of Mines sponsored research, we successfully demonstrated that the LRQA method could be used to measure the fraction of Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) in coal/diesel particulate mixtures which were prepared in the laboratory.(I) 'The immediate objective was to test and refine this LRQA method on samples collected in a diesel underground coal mine.Specific objectives required to meet this goal include:I) Develop in-mine sample collection methods which will insure sufficient particulate loading on filters for LRQA. ,2) Develop methodology for in-mine collection of reference samples (""coal-only"" and ""diesel-only"" filters) which arc required for quantitative LRQA. 3) Analyze precision and accuracy of the LRQA method. 4) Compare composition measurements with another analytical method, i.e. the University of Minnesota/Bureau of Mines size selective sampling Micro-Orifice Uniform Deposit Impactor (MOUDI) method.An advantage of the LRQA method is that it allows analysis of filters which have been collected by a method similar to that used to determine the respirable dust concentration in US underground coal mines. No new sampling instruments and techniques are required. Transfer of sample from collection substrate to analysis substrate is not necessary. Furthermore, other analyses can be made on the same sample since the technique is nondestructive."

"Re-entrainment refers to dislodgement of particles deposited by both atmospheric and nonatmospheric processes and their subsequent insertion into a flowing field. Formation of sand dunes, snow drifts, soil erosion and fugitive dust emissions are a few examples of the natural occurrence of re-entrainment. Re-entrainment studies have been done for the estimation of potential hazards from nuclear fallouts. The phenomenon of re-entrainment has been utilized for the cleaning of wafers and filters. Re-entrainment is associated with both surface and underground mining activities. However, studies on dust re-entrainment in mine atmospheres are limited. Understanding the re-entrainment phenomenon is important because dust particles lying seemingly harmless on the ground and adhering to numerous surfaces can get re-entrained and become a health and safety hazard.There are significant differences in the kind of re-entrainment encountered in underground mines and those in other fields of interest. These major differences are air velocity, direction of air flow, particle size, amount of particles, and time of exposure. While numerous studies have been done in other fields to identify the role of interacting variables and their contribution to the mechanisms of re-entrainment, no similar reported work is available for dust in mine atmospheres.In this paper, recent research efforts on re-entrainment are reviewed. The most suitable form of representing re-entrainment in underground coal mine atmosphere is presented. Various approaches to studying re-entrainment phenomenon in mines are also outlined.In the mineral industries, formation of dust particles of widely varying sizes is a natural outcome of the fragmentation required in mining the solid resources. Fine particles in mine atmospheres, particularly in the respirable size range, are a threat to the health and safety of the miners when present in high concentrations. In 1980 the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) Committee on the Measurement and Control of Respirable Dust in Mines recommended that the spatial and temporal characteristics (of fragments produced in coal mining) need to be understood so that the exposure of workers to the dust can be controlled. Recently several studies have been performed to understand the fundamental behavior of the airborne respirable dust in mine airways (Bhaskar, 1987; Qin, 1988; Polat, 1989; Bode, 1990)."

"INTRODUCTION The limited domestic demands for lithium salts and metal before the war were met readily by the use of minerals particularly lepidolite (lithium mica) and amblygonite (a lithium phosphate), from which lithium can be recovered relatively easily. New wartime uses, however, created such a demand that it became necessary to turn to spodumene (a lithium feldspar) as the principal source of supply. Although very large deposits of spodumene occur in South Dakota and in North Carolina, it much more difficult to extract lithium from spodumene than from lepidolite or amblygonite.During the spring and summer of 1942 a study was made in Salt Lake City laboratory of the Bureau of Mines on the recovery of lithium from spodumede. Preliminary tests were made on two processes - roasting with potassium sulfate 4/ 5/ and roasting with calcium chloride and calcium carbonate 6/ -,which appeared to be the most promising of the various processes that had been proposed. By roasting spodumene with approximately its own weight of potassium sulfate at 1,050º C. and leaching the product with water, about 70 percent of the lithium could be extracted. Consumption of the relatively expensive potassium sulfate, however, was high; much of the potassium was found in the insoluble leach residue, end large amounts were lost by volatilization and dusting. By roasting the spodumene with calcium chloride and calcium carbonate, nearly 90 percent of the lithium was chloridized temperatures of 850° to 1,050° C. Much of the lithium could be extracted from the calcine by leaching with water after roasting at the lower temperatures, but volatilization of lithium chloride was appreciable, amounting to 20 to 25 percent in a direct gas-fired furnace at temperatures of 800° to 850° C. At 1,000° to 1,050° C., volatilization was far from complete. Thus, it would be necessary to use both fume collection and leaching of the calcine, unless the roasting temperatures were sufficiently high to volatilize all the lithium chloride. Because of the well-known difficulties of collecting chloride fumes, it was decided to search for a better process."

"Abstract — The use of diesel equipment in underground coal mines is controversial because the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH ) regards ""wholediesel exhaust"" as ""a potential occupational carcinogen."" Threshold limit values (TLVs ) are recommended for the gaseous pollutants CO, CO2, NO, NO2, SO2 and some hydrocarbons emitted in diesel exhaust. There is, however, no TLV recommended for diesel exhaust aerosols (DEA) nor is there a standard method for sample these aerosols.The University of Minnesota and the USBM have collaborated to develop a personal diesel exhaust aerosol sampler (PDEAS) that utilizes size selective, partial impaction and gravimetric analysis. During the field tests of this sampler, numerous air quality measurements were conducted in underground coal mines that used diesel equipment. The objective of this report is to present these data and to assess the impact of diesel face haulage equipment on mine a quality.Air quality data were collected in four underground coal mines. The mines used continuous miners and diesel haulage equipment. Daily samples were collected at the section intake, haulage way and on haulage vehicles. Both full- and partial-shift samples were collected using a variety of aerosol instruments. These included the PDEAS and the micro-orifice uniform deposit impactor (MOUDI) that sample the mine aerosol diesel exhaust fraction. Two of the mines were also monitored for the major gaseous constituents found in diesel exhaust CO,CO2, NO, NC, and SO2. These measurements were made by either collecting bag samples for subsequent gas analysis or by Palmes dosimeters.Concentrations of CO, CO2, NO, NO2 and SO2 were well below regulated levels. The mine average DEA concentration determined by the PDEAS in the haulageway for the three mines surveyed was 0.79 mg/m4, with a standard deviation of 0.19 mg/m3 DEA contributed 65% of the respirable aerosol, at this location. These results were the same as the mean DEA concentrations calculated from size distribution measurements obtained using the MOUDI. This was 0.78 mg/m3, with a standard deviation of 022 mg/m3."

Long-haul dump (LHD) vehicles used in underground mining are known to expose workers to important levels of whole-body vibration1. These vehicles are generally designed without suspension and may be categorized as small or large LHDs depending on whether their respective load capacities are lower or larger than 3.5 cubic yards. While the majority of older vehicles are equipped with a rigid or unsuspended seat, more recent LHDs often incorporate a suspension seat. The objective of this study was to define the vibration spectral characteristics of most commonly encountered large and small LHD vehicles operating in mining operations. This was done in an effort to categorize the vehicles in terms of vibration spectral classes to be reproduced on a laboratory whole-body vibration simulator to assess the vibration attenuation performance of a typical LHD suspension seat. Methods Vertical vibration measured at the seat attachment point of 8 small and 8 large LHD vehicles operating underground in typical mining operations under loaded and unloaded conditions was considered as the basis for defining the spectral classes. By regrouping the data collected for each LHD vehicle size and load condition, the overall distribution of acceleration power spectral density (PSD) of measured floor vibration was determined over the 0.5 to 20 Hz frequency range. Mean and envelopes of maximum and minimum values of PSD spectra were computed to define the spectral classes, along with the corresponding values of frequency weighted rms acceleration determined in accordance to the ISO 2631-1 standard2. These spectra were further used to calculate the displacements needed to drive a whole-body vibration simulator consisting of a platform supported by two servo-hydraulic actuators having a total stroke of ±100 mm. For validation purposes, the vibration acceleration spectra measured on the simulator were compared with the target spectra representing the spectral classes. Finally, the vibration transmissibility characteristics of a typical suspension seat were determined under sine sweep excitation using both a rigid mass load and a human subject having a mass of 62 kg and 85 kg, respectively. The SEAT value, representing the ratio of seat to base frequency-weighted rms acceleration, was further measured under each of the defined LHD vibration spectral classes by loading the seat with an 85 kg subject. Tests were repeated three times and the mean SEAT values were determined to assess the seat’s ability to reduce exposure to whole-body vibration in LHD vehicles. Results Three spectral classes applicable to both loaded and unloaded conditions were defined as shown in Figure 1: one for large and two for small LHDs. The influence of load on frequency-weighted rms acceleration was found to be negligible for large and Class I small LHDs, while a shift of the peak acceleration PSD to lower frequencies was noted for the loaded vehicles. The Bureau of Mines has developed a system that permits the "soft" soldering of aluminum and aluminum alloys with standard tin-lead solders. The method employs application of a thin nickel-copper-alloy coating to the substrate, which enables the tin-lead solders to wet readily and spread over the areas to be joined. With conventional technology, aluminum and aluminum alloys are extremely difficult to solder because tenacious surface oxide films prevent wetting. With the Bureau-developed method, the aluminum substrate is mechanically or chemically cleaned to facilitate bonding to a minute layer of zinc that is subsequently applied with an electroless zincate solution. The nickel-copper-alloy (30 to 70 pct Ni) coating is then applied electrolytically over the zinc, using immersion cell or brush-coating techniques. Development of acetate electrolytes has permitted deposition of the proper alloy coatings. The coated areas can then be readily joined with conventional tin-lead solders and fluxes. The joints so formed are ductile, strong, and relatively corrosion resistant, and exhibit strengths equivalent to those formed on copper and brass when the same solders and fluxes are used. The method has also been employed to soft-solder magnesium alloys.
