Demonstrate the technical feasibility of using nontraditional, low-rank, coal-based fuels and new coal-based technologies for mineral and metallurgical applications. Approach A cooperative research effort was initiated between the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of Energy and the minerals industry to extend the application of the fixed-bed gasification process to low-rank Western coals. The research effort enabled cooperators to gain operating experience in the use of hot, raw producer gas for iron ore pellet induration and other high-temperature mineral processes. Researchers were able to gather data regarding the fundamental engineering aspects of the fixed-bed process and gas cleanup for a wide range of solid fuel properties. Applying Fixed-Bed Gasification As a prerequisite to gathering the data needed for the study, the Bureau of Mines designed and installed, at one of its laboratories, a 6.5-ft-diam. single stage, fixed-bed, air-blown atmospheric pressure gasifier. The gasifier was coupled with a hot, raw gas combustion system and iron ore pellet in. duration kiln. The gasifier is rated at 1.5 ton/h capacity of bituminous coal.

Table 37 and figure 13 show the number of fires and fire injuries for surface stone mines by state during 1990-2001. Table 37 also shows the injury risk rates, employees' working hours, and lost workdays. In all, 96 fires occurred in 31 states and 1 fire occurred in Puerto Rico. Sixty-eight of the fires caused 67 injuries and 1 fatality (including 6 fires and 5 injuries involving contractors). The yearly average was eight fires and 5.6 injuries. The Ewhr value was 689 x 106 hr (Irr = 0.02), and the LWD value was 7,399. Indiana had the most fires (eight fires and four injuries), followed by Georgia (seven fires and seven injuries) and Pennsylvania (seven fires and five injuries). Of these states, Georgia had the highest injury risk rate value (Irr = 0.058). Table 38, partly illustrated in figure 14, shows the number of fires, fire injuries, fire fatalities, risk rates, employees' working hours, and lost workdays by time period. The number of fires and fire injuries show an increase during the second period followed by a decrease during most of the remaining periods. Employees' working hours increased during most of the periods. The In values follow patterns similar to those shown by the injury values. Tables 39-44 show the number of fires by ignition source, method of detection and suppression, equipment involved, location, and burning material by time period. Figure 15 shows the major variables related to fires for 1990-2001. Table 45 shows the number of fire injuries per number of fires causing injuries and total fires by year, ignition source, equipment involved, and location.

"This paper is based data obtained by the Bureau of Mines from some of the principal mine operators in Pennsylvania, in the course of a study conducted in cooperation with the U. S. Forest Service, with regard to economies that might be effected in the selection storage, and preparations of timber particularly treatment with preservative to prolong its life.The Pennsylvania anthracite region, considered as a single mining district is by far the largest user of mine timber of any mining district, either coal or metal, in the United States, and the bituminous districts of Pennsylvania rank second. The present annual consumption of mine timber by the coal-mining industry of Pennsylvania probably exceeds 100,000,000 cubic feet annually.In 1919, Pennsylvania produced, in round figures, 145,300,000 tons of bituminous coal, 86,200,000 tons of anthracite, and 5,400,000 tons of iron ores. If it be assumed that the bituminous coal mines required 0.33 cubic feet, anthracite mines 0.7, and iron mines 0.9 cubic feet per ton mined the timber requirements were bituminous. 47,950,000; anthracite, 60,340,000; iron mines, 4,860,000 or a total of over 113,000,000 cubic feet.The average cost of round mine timber in the anthracite region in 1905, was, according to the U. S. Forest Service, 6.6 cents per cubic foot, and $15.00 per 1000 board feet for sawed timber. The present cost Las advanced to 27.5 cents per cubic foot for round timber, delivered to the mine, of which cost 57.4, represents freight charges."

General The underground mining environment has traditionally been hostile and as early mines were developed, coal seams with particularly difficult natural conditions were bypassed in favor of those more easily exploited. Barring the discovery of new and novel sources of energy, the depletion of petroleum and natural gas reserves will eventually force the United States back to the use of coal as its primary energy source. Figure 1 illustrates the trend away from coal which has taken place over the past half century. Today, the demand for coal requires a re-evaluation of all coal seams to meet the needs of the energy market. Difficult mining conditions may result in an increase in the consumption of roof control materials, require greater investment in pumping and ventilation systems, and increase the need for in-depth engineering of far greater safety in production plans. They may also cause delays in mine development and curtail production, all of which combine to drive up the unit production cost. It is reasonable to expect that conditions will continue to deteriorate as current reserves are depleted, thus bringing this factor into greater prominence in the future. For several years now, it has become apparent that in addition to economic objectives, coal companies must set and achieve several concomitant objectives to accomodate society's interest in the conservation of natural resources. Government action to meet this interest has taken the form of two categories of Federal legislation, environmental protection and employee health and safety. With an expanding population, a rising standard of living, and the instability inherent in a constantly changing international situation, the mineral supply outlook is a major national concern. Structures, roads, and machines are built largely of mineral products; the energy to heat the structures and to power the machines is derived mostly from minerals; agricultural out-put is sustained with the aid of mineral fertilizers; and the Nation's economic and military security both are founded ultimately on its ability to obtain and utilize essential metals, nonmetals, and mineral fuels.

In 1960, the Secretary of the Interior, acting under the provisions of Public Law 454, 80th Congress, appointed a Lignite Advisory Committee to aid in programming research on coal (lignite) of the north-central area. The chairman of this committee is the Secretary of the Interior or his delegated representative, and in all meetings held during 1960 and 1961, the Director of the Bureau of Mines, Marling J. The problems presented by old mine workings affect both present day mining and land development. An automated method of locating these old mines from the surface using electrical resistivity techniques was de-veloped earlier under a Bureau of Mines contract. Subsequent Bureau research has refined the techniques and expanded the area of study to a variety of geologic provinces. During this research, six mining areas in the United States were in-vestigated with the Bureau's automated resistivity method. This report describes the mining areas involved and the results of the resistivity investigations, which showed a high rate of success in detecting old mines. It also describes the field measurement techniques and data analysis procedures.

The data developed in this study establishes the technical and economic feasibility as well as the improved health and safety characteristics of a novel mining concept. The mining concept is a modified longwall technique using prestressed tendons for roof control, longhole blasting for fragmentation, and remote mucking. The technical feasibility was found to be dependent on the state of the art, while economic feasibility was found to be dependent on particular minerals and on supply and demand. Since these two conditions are not necessarily coincident in time the data is presented in the report in a manner that enables the mining engineer to perform a rapid preliminary technical and economic analyses for a specific property.

This is one of a series of instruction guides developed to help instructors present health and safety training courses to workers in the coal mining industry. This course is intended for training those, usually the safety officers, who perform surveys fur inhalation contaminants in above ground work areas. The handbook entitled ?Handbook for Surveys of Inhalation Contaminants in Above Ground Coal Mining and Processing Work Areas? (NTIS #PB-243-35";) is used as a manual for the course and as a prime reference when performing the actual surveys or interpreting the sampling results. There are six experiments for the students to perform during the course to familiarize them with the sampling devices routinely used during the surveys.

This Information Circular brings together for consideration recommendations from U.S. Bureau of Mines research in the area of surface mine mobile equipment maintenance for the period 1982 through 1991. It updates the 1982 contract report by Baker and Alves that formed the basis for much of the work described in the present report. Recommendations for hazard abatement during work on mobile one equipment are presented and stem from the results and recommendations of the research in two areas: (1) equipment and workplace hazard reduction, and (2) management of maintenance information. Recommendations included in this report apply to both the operators and maintainers of mobile mining equipment as well as to the manufacturers of that equipment.

The Bureau of Mines has developed several methods for extracting tantalum and columbium (niobium) and the rare-earth compounds from ores and concentrates. A cooperative agreement was made by the Bureau with Porter Bros. Corporation of Idaho to process 200 pounds of its euxenite concentrate by methods that had been developed at the Albany, Oreg., Metallurgy Research Center. The euxenite concentrate was processed to extract and purify the valuable metals by chlorination, solvent extraction, and hydrometallurgical techniques. Chlorination was used to convert the valuable constituents into chlorides and to partly separate them. Solvent extraction techniques were used to separate the tantalum from the columbium. The rare-earth and uranium compounds were purified by hydrometallurgical methods.

"Asbestos" is not the name of a distinct mineral species but is rather a commercial term applied to fibrous varieties of several minerals. The origin and significance of names applied to asbestos by early writers are discussed in the section devoted to sources of supply and terms employed in ancient times. VARIETIES The most useful variety of asbestos is chrysotile, a fibrous serpentine the composition of which is expressed by the formula H4Mg3Si209. Chrysotile is characterized by a strength and flexibility that permit the use of the longer fibers for spinning. The bulk of the world production of both long and short fibers, is of this variety.

During the past few years, since flotation has become the paramount treatment method for most all kinds of ores, the Bureau has gathered the data on consumption of reagents used in the flotation treatment. The first report was issued in 1916. A brief review of such reports snows the progress made in the art of flotation, and each year brings forth the development of new reagent a or combinations of reagents that seem sure to survive, but research and progress spell their defeat, if not by entire elimination, at least subjects them to considerable modification.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has established a wire rope research laboratory to examine the factors that affect the life of wire rope. A 2-in-diameter 6x25 fiber core rope was degraded on a bending fatigue machine. This was the first in a series of tests on rope of this construction and size. Baseline testing at the laboratory was reported in an earlier publication. Tensile and nondestructive tests were performed on samples of the rope to determine the relationship between rope deterioration and rope breaking strength. The tests indicated that as a wire rope nears the end of its useful life, deterioration and the consequent loss of rope strength increase at an accelerated rate.

The electrodeposition characteristics of seven binary alloys of titanium have been investigated. The object of the electrorefining experiments with an alloy was to determine the efficiency of titanium separation from individual alloying elements under established conditions. Reported results are only indicative. It is conceivable that numerous duplications of tests might give average maximums that would vary from those noted in this report; however, in the few tests that were repeated, the magnitude of transfer of the alloying elements was of the same order. The results detailed herein are for a given set of conditions. Many combinations of operating variables are possible, and the results achieved under different conditions probably would differ from those reported.

The Bureau of Mines, under a cooperative agreement with Callahan Mining Corp., measured rock displacement at the 4,7S0-ft level of the 5,100-ft-deep rectangular, timbered Caladay Shaft in northern Idaho. Displacements were measured with multiple-position borehole exten-someters (MPBX) installed 4 ft above the face and timber extensometers (TE) installed with the timber sets. This report presents the displacement data along with preliminary, qualitative observations of rock behavior. The measured displacements showed an instantaneous response to shaft sinking and significant time dependency. The relative magnitudes of displacement measured at the shaft walls were heavily influenced by local geologic structure and distance from the shaft bottom.

This manual provides instructions for installing, operating, and maintaining a protective canopy on the Galis Mfg. Co. roof drill. The instructions are based upon two actual installations: one made in a mine on roof drill, model 300, and one in the factory. The parts list and engineering drawings for the protective canopy are included at the end of the manual. And a discussion of some alternative design concepts is also included. The manual can also be used for retrofitting other roof drills with similar protective canopies. Skilled mechanics can determine if the instructions herein would be applicable to the other roof drills and can determine any necessary modifications if they are not.
