A survey of electromagnetic noise reports was performed and a summary of the results are given. Industrial concerns were surveyed for techniques to minimize the effects of electromagnetic noise and are presented. The common types of communication links used in mines today are presented. A mathematical development was presented which determines the probability of bit errors versus distance for various types of communication links designed for in mine use. The probability of undetected errors for the protocols of the communication links is given together with burst error detection.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines developed and tested a teleoperating system to control a new highwall mining system. A remote operator was provided out-of-sight sensory information and control of coal extraction and haulage equipment. Surface and production testing proved that the teleoperating system supplied the operator with sufficient sensory information to operate the mining system. Details on the teleoperating system provided in this report include (1) sensor selection, (2) a description of the electronic control system, (3) equipment selection and modifications, (4) the positive test results, and (5) recommendations for system improvements.

The Bureau of Mines has completed an underground degasification project in which an underground piping system was used to transport methane from the coalbed to the surface. In a 10-month period four horizontal holes were drilled to an average depth of 1,450 feet. All four holes were surveyed vertically and azimuthally. In 991 days of degasification, 255 MMcf of gas was drained from the coalbed. The underground piping system proved to be a safe and effective means of transporting methane from the coalbed to the surface.

"INTRODUCTIONThe U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) was established in the public interest to conclude inquiries and scientific and technologic investigations on mining and the preparation, treatment, and utilization of mineral substances; to promote health and safety in the mineral industries; to conserve material resources and prevent their waste; to further economic development; to increaseee efficiency in the mining, metallurgical, quarrying, and other mineral industries; and to inquire into the economic conditions affecting those industries. The organic act of the Bureau, as amended by Congress and approved February 25, 1913, made it the province and duty of the U.S. Bureau of Mines to ""disseminate information concerning these subjects in such manner as will best carry out the purposes of this Act.""In accordance with this directive, USBM reports the findings of its research and investigations in its own series of publications and also in articles that: appear in scientific, technical, and trade journals; in "" proceedings of conventions and seminars; in' reference books; and in other non-USBM publications. "Acid mine drainage can be controlled by water treatment, retardation of the pyrite oxidation reaction system, or enhanced prediction that allows preventive action to be taken. The Bureau of Mines is conducting research in each of these areas; the results of this research are summarized in the eight papers that comprise this volume. Field work to evaluate overburden analysis, alkaline injection, and bactericidal control of acid formation is described, along with two new inexpensive methods to treat acid mine water. These papers were prepared for an acid mine drainage technology transfer meeting held in Pittsburgh, PA, on April 3 and 4, 1985. INTRODUCTIONAcid drainage from coal mines is one of the most persistent industrial pollution problems in the United States. Over 5,000 miles of streams and rivers are adversely affected, primarily by underground mines that have been abandoned for decades. Meanwhile, at active mining operations and at sites where mining occurred after 1977, discharge water must be treated to meet fairly stringent regulatory limits--at a cost to the industry of over $1 million per day.The Bureau of Mines has a special responsibility to facilitate integration of mining and mineral processing with environmental safeguards. This responsibility is twofold: the development of techniques to reduce or eliminate environmental degradation, and the improvement of existing pollution control processes to make them more efficient and more cost effective. Research in acid mine drainage exemplifies the Bureau's concern for these environmental aspects of mining.This collection of papers summarizes much of the Bureau's recent research on acid mine drainage and will give the reader a sense of where the research is headed, in addition to providing details regarding new technology and recently acquired knowledge. Synthesis of high - Btu gas , using the Fischer - Tropsch reaction was investigated in a tube - wall reactor of 2 - inch steel . The catalyst was carbonexpanded iron ( CEI ) , formed on the walls of a steel reactor by exposing the reactor to 1H₂ + 100 synthesis gas under certain conditions . Advantages to be gained from successful development of the CEI - coated tube- wall reactor are elimination of catalyst plant and catalyst handling and charging operations , high- temperature operation , and a relatively low- cost , reactor -heat recovery system . In one test ( TW- 8 ) in which the reactor was filled with CEI , the reactor was operated for 1,910 hours before the test was stopped because of excessive pressure drop caused by carbon deposition . The pressure drop was satisfactory for 1,000 hours of operation at an hourly space velocity of 300 , but it increased rapidly at space velocities of 600 and 1,000 . When operated at a space velocity of 300 , with a ratio of 1 to 1 recycle at 534 ° C , a conversion of 72 percent of the 3H + 100 synthesis gas was achieved . The product gas had a heating value of about 610 Btu per cubic foot and could be suitably upgraded to 900 - Btu gas by subsequent use of a nickel catalyst . CEI did not operate effectively as a film catalyst under conditions of generation tried in this study . Generally , operation of the 2 - inch reactor with CEI catalyst was unsatisfactory because of poor reproducibility of the activation step and poor temperature control resulting in high- operating temperatures and eventual plugging of the reactor . Tests using CEI in fixed , packed beds suggest that the most likely application for CEI in producing high - Btu gas would be a moving - bed reactor , where sufficient bed movement and heat removal are provided to prevent plugging .

"The tests described in this paper were conducted under the sponsorship of Subcommittee VII on Pulverizing Characteristics of Coal, a subcommittee of Committee D-5 on Coal and Coke, American Society for Testing Materials, with a view to evaluating various laboratory procedures for testing grindability of coal in connection with commercial pulverization of coal for use as powdered fuel. The subcommittee, at a meeting in New York City on February 21, 1934, selected for test four methods that had been developed during the past few years for testing grindabilitay of coal and were being used by coal-testing laboratories in the United States and Canada. These methods are:Bureau of Mines method, Cross method, Fuel Research Laboratory method, and Hardgrove method. Subcommittee VII agreed that the grindability tests should be made on five coals selected to cover a wide range of hardness. The Pittsburgh Experiment Station, Bureau of Mines, was asked to direct the investigation and to prepare representative samples of the coals. Laboratories of the fol. lowing institutions and companies agreed to cooperate by making grindability tests: Babcock & Wilcox Co., Foster Wheeler Corporation, Fuel Engineering Co., of New York, Fuel Research Laboratory of the Canada Department of Mines, and Northwest Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSHelpful suggestions in planning the investigation were made by A. The objective of this project was to develop technical data and evaluate performance and utility of leaky feeder communications systems currently used in North American underground mines. The desired information was obtained principally through on-site surveys. Altogether, six of the seven mining companies known to be using leaky feeder communications were visited. This report covers the findings of these surveys. In addition, the report provides a brief background summary of mine communications, a technical discussion of leaky feeder systems, and conclusions and recommendations based on the results of the survey.

Advocates of health and safety in mining have found themselves confronted in recent years with what might appear to be contradictory procedures with regard to dust occurrence in mines and what appear to be suitable methods or measures to give the mines and mine workers a maximum measure of protection against dust. A concerted and relatively effective drive has been made to introduce rock dust into bituminous and lignitic coal mines to prevent or limit explosion and fire disasters, while an equally determined effort has been and is now being made to curb rock dust or to eliminate it from air in metal mines to prevent or at least limit the occurrence of miners' consumption and other diseases. Both procedures are logical even though the efforts appear to be of an opposing nature. While rock dusting has not been applied in coal mines nearly as universally or as effectively as could and should be done, nevertheless a careful analysis of the record of the past 10 years indicates that the amount of rock dusting that has been done has resulted in the saving of a minimum? of 200 lives annually certainly no small achievement. Largely but by no means wholly due to the use of rock dusting, the number of fatalities from explosions and fires in our coal mines in the last 4 years haw been reduced more than 75 percent as compared with the 4-year period 1911-15, the first years of the existence of the United States Bureau of Mines, which was brought into existence in 1910 largely to try to do something about reducing the disgracefully high fatality occurrence from explosion disasters in our coal mines. Hence, rock dusting has been given at least a. trial and has proved its effectiveness definitely.

So many subjects are covered in State mine-safety regulations that any attempt to compare different State laws in their entirety would be futile. On the other hand, if one selects a single phase or branch of safety work, such a comparison may prove profitable. The subject selected for study in this paper is limited to legislation or regulations dealing specifically with safeguarding (electric) motored equipment used in gassy mines. T When one reads glowing accounts of the safety activities being carried on here and there it is easy to believe that everything which is right and proper is being done to safeguard the mine.workers; but, when one takes time to look into the weakness of many State regulations, it is evident that there is still room for improvement. Undoubtedly it would have been much better for the safety of mines if electrical equipment had been introduced into mines 50 years earlier. If electricity had been in general use when the first mine regulations were pre- pared, those formulating the rules would have covered this hazard along with other hazards, but as electricity came in at a later period, safe mine legisla- tion regarding it has been woefully neglected. Today the United States in general is far behind most other coal-producing nations in the provision of adequate safety rules or laws for the installation and maintenance of electrical equipment and wiring. Returning to the subject of our study, approximately 30 of the 48 States mine coal. More than 20 of these States' produce coal in large quantities. How- ever, of the 30 States only four, 3 Pennsylvania, Utah, Washington, and West Virginia, have laws which specially call for the use of explosion-proof types

Coal workers’ pneumoconiosis is the leading cause of death due to occupational illness among U.S. coal miners. This disease is caused by miners’ exposure to excessive levels of respirable coal mine dust. A personal dust monitor (PDM) has recently been developed to provide near real-time feedback to miners regarding the level of respirable coal dust in the air they breathe. The main objective of this report is to document coal miners’ reactions to this device and how they make use of the information it provides. It summarizes a field study by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health that documented the opinions of 30 miners at 4 underground coal mines concerning the use of PDMs.

The Bureau of Mines made enthalpy measurements on sodium bromide and sodium iodide in the temperature range 400° to 1,200° K using an ice calorimeter. Equations representing enthalpy as a function of temperature were derived from the data by the method of least squares. These equations were used to calculate smooth values of heat capacity, enthalpy, and entropy at 50° K intervals from the ice point to 1,200° K. The melting point determined for sodium bromide was 1,020° K; the melting point of sodium iodide was 934° K. The heats of fusion of sodium bromide and sodium iodide were calculated to be 6,270 and 5,680 cal/mole, respectively.

The Bureau of Mines derived equations expressing the theoretical relationship between density of oil-shale rock and its organic content. Effects on theoretical shale density produced by variations in mineral composition and organic matter properties were evaluated. The theoretical relationship was extended to relate oil-shale density to oil yield in both oil weight and volume units by considering the fraction of organic matter converted to oil and the specific gravity of the oil produced. Corollary equations relating organic content by volume to organic content by weight and to oil yield were developed. The general relationships apply to an oil-shale deposit uniform in character. Application of the theoretical relationships to Green River Formation oil shales was demonstrated.

A thick-wall cylinder solution applicable to the evaluation of anisotropic elastic parameters is derived for the interpretation of stress relief data. For a restricted class of problems, a special relationship among certain orthotropic moduli yields stress distributions for the plane orthotropic problem that are identical to the corresponding isotropic case. A ring or hollow cylinder with these specialized anisotropic properties subjected to uniform radial loads is one of the problems in this class. Consequently, known stress solutions are used to develop the strains and displacements for a specialized orthotropic thick-wall cylinder under uniform pressures. The results are consistent with anisotropic equations used in the evaluation of in situ rock stresses.

The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting a cross-sectional survey of equipment sound levels and worker noise exposures in the stone/aggregate mining industry. Six stone/aggregate mines (three surface and three underground) were recently surveyed, and the findings (ire presented here. The surveys consisted of sound-level measurements conducted around various equipment and machinery (including stone processing and crushing equipment) and full-shift dose measurements to determine worker noise exposures. The findings identify the equipment and machinery that are likely to cause worker overexposures and identify the workers found to he experiencing overexposures. In addition, the benefit of cabs in reducing mobile equipment operator noise exposure is discussed.

To reduce fatalities resulting from personnel falling into voids formed above feeders in coal piles, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health at the Spokane Research Laboratory established a project to monitor coal surge piles to detect the formation of voids. A resistivity imaging method has been developed by GECOH Exploration, of Lexington, KY, in which a geophysical technique known as vertical electrical sounding (VES) is used to scan for these voids. VES operates by measuring the electrical field produced by a current in the ground at the bottom of the coal pile. This paper summarizes the results obtained from a field-scale test and shows that mapping voids within a coal pile is possible.

Poor lubrication reduces the life of wire hoist ropes when they are used in corrosive environments. Although lubricants are added to ropes during the manufacturing process, these lubricants can deteriorate during use, and it is often necessary to add more lubricant to both the interior and exterior of the rope while it is in service. The U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluated the effectiveness of synthetic lubricants, using electromagnetic nondestructive testing (NDT) to measure deterioration in ropes while they were in service. For nonpressurized lubricant applications, synthetic lubricants appear superior to petroleum-based lubricants in their ability to penetrate to the interior of a rope. Therefore, the synthetics offer better wear and corrosion protection.

During the 1990s, the former U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a number of field studies in which the performance of different types of roof bolts were evaluated in different geologic environments. The studies used a standard suite of measurements, including multipoint extensometers, strain-gauged roof bolts, and roof bolt load cells. The sites were chosen to investigate the effect of a variety of parameters, including installed tension, bolt capacity, grout annulus, and horizontal stress orientation. Although not fully successful, the measurements provided valuable insights into each of these issues. They also showed that instrumentation and monitoring have important advantages over observational methods for comparing the performance of different roof bolting systems.

The Federal Bureau of Mines investigated the extraction of lithium from hectorite-type clay deposits found on the Nevada-Oregon border. Two clay samples were used in the investigation; one contained 0.36 pct Li and the second contained 0.64 pct Li. The purpose of this laboratory-scale research was to determine how these clays responded to different extraction techniques. Extraction techniques investigated were sulfuric acid leach, sulfuric acid bake-water leach, and roast-water leach procedures with cholorides, sulfates, carbonates, and combinations of these reagents. The processing characteristics of the clay samples showed significant variations, and no one technique was effective for both materials. Lithium extractions near 90 pct were achieved during these exploratory studies.
