THIS CHAPTER reviews the highlights of developments in mining technology during 1956 and presents a special report on the design of mine openings in stable ground. This special report is presented each year in an endeavor to stimulate use of the scientific approach to the solution of problems related to mining technology. Assuming that the literature on mining technology reflects trends in mining, it appears that two areas of activity were given most attention in 1956. One was research on mining technology,4 and the other was improvement of transportation, particularly trackless transportation, both at surface and underground mines.

The current use of Mid - Continent crude oil for the manufacture of war products , such as aviation gasoline and lubricating cil , has caused an acute shortage of available supply from established sources . Therefore , refiners who heretofore have had no reason to use West Texas crude oils now are considering them as charging stock and need more information concerning their characteristics . The Bureau of Mines has published several reports3/ giving analyses of the most important of these crude oils . However, to make the applicable data in these publications readily available to refiners , the present compilation of analyses of West Texas crude oils has been prepared . Data showing the effect of catalytic desulfurization of naphthas from West Texas crude oils have been presented in a restricted Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations . These analyses were made under the general supervision of R. A. Cattell , chief, Petroleum and Natural Gas Division, Bureau of Mines , Washington, D. C. , and N. A. C. Smith, supervising engineer , Fetroleum Experiment Station, Bureau of Mines , Bartlesville, Okla . , and under the direct supervision of Harold M. Five recently developed methods for determining nitrogen oxides in automotive exhausts have been evaluated from the standpoint of accuracy and applicability in current exhaust studies. Results showed that methods requiring conversion of nitric oxide to nitrogen dioxide as a part of the analytical procedure are subject to errors introduced by the instability of NO2. The extent of some of these errors has been determined and procedures have been developed to minimize undesirable influences. On the basis of the results obtained from this study, recommendations are made regarding procedures for batch type or continuous measurement of nitrogen oxides in exhaust streams.

Roof screening for ground control originated with metal miners in the western United States. At first chain-link fence was used, but because it was so difficult to handle, the miners started installing a more rigid welded wire screen used in the concrete industry. Eventually coal mines in the west began to use screen, and now more and more coal operations, especially longwall mines, are installing roof screen on a regular basis. Screen use has recently increased in the Illinois basin and is now making its way to underground coal mines in the eastern U.S.

THE DOMEST[C bituminous coal and lignite industry remained fairly steady in 1959 compared with 1958. Although mechanization continued to expand and production increased slightly, consumption, average value, exports, and employment decreased. The percentage of underground production mechanically loaded, the percentage of total production mined by stripping, and tonnage per man per day were at their highest levels. Production.-The output of bituminous coal and lignite in 1959-412 million tons-was 0.4 percent greater than the 410.4 million tons produced in 1958. Production was retarded in 1959, largely owing to the steel strike and reduced exports.

[THE COMPOUNDS of strontium were confused with those of barium until 1790, when A. Crawford discovered that the mineral strontianite, long believed to be a barium mineral, was a compound of a new element. This discovery was confirmed 2 years later by I. C. Hope. The mineral was named strontianite because it was found near the town of Strontian in Argyllshire, Scotland. In 1808 Sir Humphrey Davy isolated strontium metal by the electrolysis of fused chlorides. Celestite (strontium sulfate) and strontianite (strontium carbonate) are the principal strontium minerals. Because of its more widespread occurrence, celestite is more important commercially.]

CADMIUM is one of the metals apparently destined to remain relatively scarce. The en tire supply of primary cadmium is recovered as a byproduct, concurrently with the treatment of ores of other metals. Development of the cadmium industry is attributed to metallurgical improvements in the zinc industry; output depends almost wholly upon zinc production. Cadmium is a metal of specialized uses where its superior performance has developed a strong, expanding demand. The supply, however, has been relatively unresponsive to price because of its byproduct nature. Cadmium's outstanding properties would assure it a manyfold greater market if more were available at lower prices.

A major focus of ground control research presently being conducted by the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is to incorporate weak rock masses (such as are associated with operations in the Carlin Trend in Nevada) into existing design relationships. The original database that led to most of the empirical design relationships presently employed in hard-rock mining was derived from fair-to-good-quality rock. In this study, the relationship between weak rock quality and opening design (non-entry/entry methods) is being investigated. The common factor in all mines is a weak back or wall. This work attempts to provide tools that will enable a mine operator to make economic decisions that will also ensure a safe working environment. The effect of engine parameters on exhaust emissions from two diesel engines was studied experimentally. Fuel-injection characteristics and intake air conditions were considered as parameters influencing the emissions. Emphasis was placed on the effect of parameter variations on nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions, because diesels generally emit very low levels of carbon monoxide (CO) and unburned hydrocarbons. Emissions other than NOx were at lowest levels when the engines were adjusted for best performance. NOx emissions can be diminished somewhat through variation in fuel-injection characteristics, but there generally are penalties in emissions of CO, smoke, and unburned hydrocarbons or in engine performance. Temperature and composition of intake air have a significant effect on NOx emissions. Levels of NOx are reduced by recirculating the exhaust gas or by adding water to the intake air stream. However, the rate of water added or exhaust gas recirculated must be limited to prevent the degradation of engine performance and increased emissions of CO and smoke. At high exhaust recirculation rates, levels of CO and smoke were increased such that it was necessary to derate the engine and also to use a catalytic system for oxidation of CO.

The Bureau of Mines conducted flotation tests on a mixture of barite waste materials from Nevada in which essentially all of the barite values were finer than 20 micrometers. Flotation variables investigated in these tests were the effects of (1) sodium silicate as a pulp dispersant, (2) sodium hydroxide as a pH modifier, (3) increased amounts of sodium cetyl sulfate, (4) conditioning time and (5) solids content during conditioning. The optimum flotation conditions were achieved by adding 2.5 pounds of sodium silicate and 10 pounds of sodium cetyl sulfate per ton of feed and conditioning the pulp for 20 minutes at a 35-percent solids content. Using these conditions, a concentrate was produced that contained 94.7 percent BaS04, with an attendant recovery of 90.9 percent of the barite in the feed. In addition to the flotation tests, a selective barite flocculation process was developed to treat extremely fine barite. A barite concentrate containing 96.5 percent BaS04 with an attendant recovery of 82.1 percent of the barite was produced by selective flocculation. A process patent application has been filed based on this process.

Using solution calorimetry, the following heats of reaction were determined: (1) NaCN(c) + 1/Cu20(c) + 129H20(l) ? CuCN(c) + NaOH?128.5H2O ?H = -13.44±0.10 kcal/mole, (2) HCN(2) + NaOH?128.5H20 ? NaCN(c) + 129.5H20(l) ? = -2.52±0.02 kcal/mole. From these reactions, the heats of formation for CuCN(c) and HCN(2) were calculated to be 22.7±0.4 kcal/mole and 24.9±0.4 kcal/mole, respectively. Reaction 2 was made to check the consistency of literature values for heats of formation of HCN and NaCN. Adiabatic calorimetric measurements between 10° and 400° K showed the entropy and heat capacity of CuCN(c) to be 21.51±0.06 eu and 14.58±0.04 cal/mole deg, respectively, at 298° K. A broad anomaly in the heat capacity was found in the temperature range 285°-320° K. The heat of transition associated with this anomaly was less than 1 cal/mole, the sensitivity of the measurements.

The Bureau of Mines has undertaken beneficiation investigations on samples representing large tonnages of oxidized taconites in order to develop and evaluate applicable technologies for producing iron oxide concentrates from these materials. Information derived from the investigations can be used to expand the domestic iron raw-materials base and to establish the impact these taconite deposits may have on future national iron ore requirements. This report describes a process that includes reduction roasting, magnetic separation, and flotation, applied to a western Mesabi Range sample taken near Coleraine, Minn. The sample contained 36.8 pct iron and 46.0 pct silica, and represented 0.5 to 1 billion tons of crude material. An average of 962 lb/hr of oxidized taconite was roasted with 33 lb/hr of lignite in a 35-foot-long rotary kiln. Pulverized lignite and natural gas maintained the kiln operating temperature at 850° C. The roasted taconite was beneficiated by magnetic separation and cationic flotation in a 900-lb/hr pilot plant and yielded a product analyzing 68.1 pct iron and 4.6 pct silica, and containing 82.4 pct of the iron in the kiln feed.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the main reactions of coal gasification by steam. Coal (minus 70 mesh)-water slurry was fed into a laboratory-scale tube-coil gasifier to show the effects of residence time (0.6 to 1.1 sec), steam-coal ratio (2 to 11 lb/lb), and temperature (1,600° to 1,900° F), at about 1-1/2 atm. Devolatilization was very rapid: about 70 pet of the coal's volatile matter evolved within 0.6 sec at about 1,600° F; temperature increase released more volatile matter until about 95 pct was driven off at 1,900° F. Devolatilization was not increased by raising steam concentrations and was only slightly increased by extending residence time. Below 1,600° F, there was no evidence of the steam-carbon reaction, but at 1,900° F more than 80 pct of the coal's fixed carbon was converted to gas; the conversion was increased Significantly by increased residence time and steam concentration. The water-gas shift reaction occurred simultaneously with devolatilization, and the steam-carbon reaction, approaching equilibrium with increased residence time and temperature and decreased steam concentration.

The bureau of Mines conducted a laboratory scale investigation of the process of selective flocculation with the objective of developing a method to effect separations on suspensions consisting predominately of ultra-fine-size (minus 400-mesh) particles of coal and refuse. Selective flocculation of coal from coal-refuse slurries could be achieved with a wide variety of reagents. Typically as much as 15 to 20 weight-percent of high-ash solids (70 to 80 percent ash) could be retained in suspension. The flocculated sediment remained a high-ash product, however, and would require further treatment to be regarded as clean coal. No combination of reagents and conditions led to selective flocculation of the refuse component. The dispersing agent was found to be the critical factor; dosages of 3 to 8 lb/ton2 were necessary to stabilize the suspension for subsequent selective flocculation. In addition, most of the dispersants that worked were most effective at substantially elevated pH (11 or so). It was concluded that this process would be prohibitively expensive and, because of yield and quality constraints, it would be of questionable utility in today's coal preparation industry.

3. Preliminary Evaluation of Mine Sealing Techniques As the first stage in the development of a technique for the remote sealing of mines, a state-of-the-art survey of various mine sealing techniques was conducted. This was expanded to include a review of different materials offering some potential for use as a mine sealant. Techniques for the remote placement of materials for other applications were evaluated, and system concepts for dis¬tributing remotely placed materials were developed. This preliminary review led to the development of a functional description of a general mine sealing technique to meet the specified conditions. Various potential system configurations were synthesized. These were subjected to a preliminary evaluation based on estimated confidence in system performance, development risk, cost, and sealing time. Based on this preliminary evaluation, promising mine¬sealing techniques were selected for further development. This section presents a review of the following: (a) Techniques for constructing permanent seals from within a mine. (b) State of the art in remote sealing for mine fire control. (c) Techniques for remote placement of materials for other applications. (d) Systems for distributing remotely placed material. (e) Materials for mine sealing. (f) Synthesis of remote mine sealing concepts.

A new post-disaster signalling system for the Bureau o Mines, using through-the-earth EM propagation, was successfully field-tested in the Lake Lynn test mine. Successful detection at an estimated input SNR of -30dB was accomplished using a coherent integration time of 4.46 minutes. The transmitted waveform consisted of a repeating pseudonoise maximal length sequence phase modulating a 1950Hz carrier. The receiver used a sliding-window matched filter, optimal for signal known exactly except for phase and starting time, implemented via a special purpose processor. Parallel processing permits adaptive signalling, where the detection (integration) time is determined by the actual input SNR encountered. This field test demonstrates a trapped miner detection system that is about 36dB more sensitive than a current pulsed system. This increased sensitivity permits some desired combination of increased range, shorter detection time, and reduced transmitter power or antenna-size. The combination of pulse-compression-type-signal, coherent integration, parallel-processing, and output peak-detection algorithms permit implemention of an ultra-reliable detection system. The same combination is compatible with digital Pulse Position Modulation and Emitter position location strategies.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted explosion tests on various full-scale cementitious bulkheads used in abandoned mine areas to evaluate the ability of the bulkheads to withstand gas explosion over-pressures of 20 psig. Tests were performed on 120-ft2 solid-concrete-block seals of varying thicknesses and designs. Of the seven solid-concrete-block seals tested, only the standard-type seal, having a 16-in thickness, keyed at the floor and ribs, all joints mortared, wedged at the roof, and a center pilaster, maintained its integrity when subjected to a 20-psig pressure wave. After being subjected to repeated explosions, the standard seal only showed a small hairline crack and had an air leakage of 87 ft3/min at a pressure differential of 1 in H2O. Tests were performed on cementitious foam seals of varying thicknesses and compressive strengths. Explosion tests have shown that 200-psi strength, 4- and 8-ft-thick seals can withstand a 20-psig pressure wave. At a pressure differential of 1 in H20, no air leakage was detected through the 200-psi, 8-ft-thick foam seal.

The Spokane Research Laboratory, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, is investigating various remote sensing technologies as possible tools to detect, monitor, and mitigate hazardous situations in surface mines that could lead to catastrophic slope failure. Promising technologies include a field-portable spectro-polarimetric imager and a stationary interferometric radar device. Field tests were conducted of a prototype visible and near-infrared spectro-polarimetric imager (SPI) built at the Carnegie Mellon Research Institute. The SPI employs anacousto-optical tunable filter (AOTF) to control wavelength, a phase retarder to measure polarization signatures, and a digital camera and computer to capture data. Images obtained at the Mountain Pass and Castle Mountain mines in southeastern California showed that the instrument is capable of obtaining hyperspectral images of highwalls, outcrops, hand samples and drill core in the field. We have retrieved spectra from Mountain Pass images that closely match those of bastnaesite and have had some success in classifying images. Although radio frequency noise in the data limited spectral classification of imagery, we project that careful alignment of the AOTF should minimize the noise and greatly improve classification.
