The load-transfer mechanics of fully grouted roof bolts in coal mines have been investigated in laboratory and analytical studies. The purpose of this Bureau of Mines research is to increase understanding and better interpret data from routine field pull tests and to develop a numerical model of a grouted bolt that can be used in a global computer model of a mine roof. Analytical studies using closed-form solutions and finite-element techniques were compared to experimental results. Laboratory work includes variation of bolt length, hole diameter, and grouL type. Pull tests were pel'fol·med on 4-, 2-, and I-ft bolts in holes of 1-and I-3IB-in diameters. Both polyester resin and inorganic grouts were used as the anchorage medium. Strain gauges were installed on the bolts at several locations to observe the rate of load transfer from the bolt through the grout to the rock mass when a force was applied at the bolt end using standard jack pull testing procedures and equipment. The average anchorage length of 4-and 2-ft bolts was 22 in. Grout type and hole size variations did not produce a significant effect on the rate of load transfer from the bolt to the rock.

To date the commercial diamond bit setters have been principally interested in the speed with which they could produce a sharp, fast-cutting bit. Thus, a premium has been placed on setters who combine a high degree of manual dexterity with the ability quickly to select the Sharp points and edges of the diamonds and set them in the mold without lost motion. The premium on speed does not allow the setters the time, nor are they trained, to consider also the crystallographic structures of the diamonds which are the clues indicating the harder and more suitable working surfaces. Since early fall of 1949, the Bureau of Mines has been conducting a long-range series of experiments in which drill bort have been oriented in diamond bits in an effort to determine the effects and economic practicability of utilizing the hardest surfaces of the diamond crystal structure. The preliminary experiments completed to date indicate that a substantial saving in diamonds may be affected by using the harder areas of the diamonds as working surfaces in the crown of diamond bits. The experimental work is being conducted by the Bureau of Mines in the laboratories and full-scale mine of the Mining Research Branch, Minerals Technology Division, Region VIII, of the U. S. Bureau of Mines at the Mount Weather Station, Bluemont, Va.

In 1947, a Korfmann universal shearing machine was installed in a mine in the Southern field of the Pennsylvania anthracite region. The machine was obtained from Germany by the Bureau of Mines after the close of World War II as a part of a program of experimental work to increase the output and lower the cost of anthracite, which the Bureau of Mines initiated in 1944 when an agreement was made with an anthracite-producing company for use of one of the company's mines as a testing ground for certain mechanical equipment procured or developed by the Bureau. A major objective is to develop a mechanical mining method that will increase the rate of advance and reduce the coat of development of coal gangways in steeply pitching seams. In addition to the time to be saved in driving these openings by machine, it is felt that further economies will be affected by making it possible to concentrate producing sections into smaller compass and that savings will ensue in supervision, maintenance, and time required for mining a section. A higher percentage extraction also is an objective. Test work covered by this report was concentrated on the power characteristics, maneuverability, effectiveness, and general qualities of the Korfmann machine in cutting coal, the cutting tests representing the first use of a machine of this kind in steep-pitch mining in the United States.

Disk-cutter experiments were performed on five rock types ranging in compressive strength from 9,000 psi to 27,000 psi. A specially constructed testing machine called a linear-cutter apparatus (LCA) was designed to load and traverse a free-rolling disk cutter across a sawed rock surface. The LCA was instrumented to measure the vertical and horizontal forces acting on the cutter during the run.. The ability of disk cutters to fragment rock was determined for both 60--degree and 90-degree cutting-edge angles, and relationships and regression equations were developed to predict cutter performance based on rock physical properties and applied forces,

The Bureau of Mines inventoried the land in southwestern Alaska to classify ownership and availability and compared this land with known mineral terranes and mineral deposits. This report discusses and quantifies the potential for favorable location of mining claims for metalliferous (locatable) mineral deposits. Of the nearly 24 million acres that constitute the study area, approximately 3.6 million acres or 17% are available for mineral location, 3.4 million acres or 14% are available with restrictions, and 17 million acres or 71% are unavailable. Mineral terranes are known to underlie about 7.8 million acres or 33% of the study area; 3 million acres or 38% occur on land available for mineral location, 1.3 million acres or 17% occur on land available with restrictions, and 3.5 million acres or 45% occur on unavailable land. The State of Alaska has opened over 91 % of its land in the study area to mineral location; in comparison, the Federal Government allows mineral location on 0.07% of the land under its jurisdiction. There are 117 known mineral deposits or occurrences within the study area, including 77 lode deposits and 40 placer deposits. Of the 41 lode deposits occurring within a mineral terrane, 2 occur on available land.

Develop and demonstrate a lightweight material that has low thermal conductivity and that would be suitable for placement using shotcrete methods. This material could be applied in deep, hot mines where mine drifts must be insulated. Its use would decrease mine refrigeration needs and reduce energy costs.

This paper is the fourth of the current series issued by the Bureau of Mines on lime- plant problems . It is hoped that the information presented in these reports will develop sufficient interest among lime- plant operators to prompt them to discuss with the Bureau their own experiences , for it is believed by such an interchange of ideas conclusions will be reached that will be of practical benefit to the entire industry . Much valuable information has been obtained from replies to the papers already issued , but a more general response is greatly desired . It is hoped that many operators will contribute additions to the information on transportation systems now at hand by answering the questions on the final page .

Fiber optic systems are being deployed in locations where explosive gas atmospheres are normally present or are present under fault conditions. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (NIOSH, PRL) conducted a study of laser safety in potentially flammable environments. Researchers conducted experiments to estimate the mean and standard deviation of laser powers needed to ignite 6% methane-air atmospheres using single mode optical fiber tips covered by two types of iron oxide (Fe304 and (FeMn)203) mixed with a ceramic adhesive. The iron oxides, heated by a 1064 nm continuous wave laser, ignited the methane-air mixtures ,at similar powers. The minimum igniting power and maximum non-igniting power (10 tests) were 407 and 350 mW, respectively, using a 62.5 pm fiber. Laser beams guided by 125 and 80 pm diameter cladding single mode fibers produced similar methane-air igniting powers. Ignition was not observed using coal particles at powers that produced ignition with the iron oxides. Threshold ignition delays using the single mode fiber were approxinlately proportional to the inverse square of the igniting power. Ignition delays were significantly longer than the reported activation time for a comnlercial fiber optic power limiter. Comparisons are made with the results of other researchers. "In this Bureau of Mines report, the Federal income tax treatment of mineral exploration and development expenditures is summarized, and changes in the tax treatment of these expenditures since 1951 are detailed and analyzed. Although no attempt is made to establish causal relationships, major tax changes favorable to exploration and development activities did occur in 1951 and 1966 when the Nation was engaged in military actions and the economy was expanding. More recent changes have been unfavorable to exploration and development and were parts of major tax reform efforts. INTRODUCTIONThis Bureau of Mines report discusses the Federal tax law provisions relating to mineral exploration and development expenditures. These provisions, contained mainly in sections 616 and 617 of the Internal Revenue Code of 1954 (Title 26 of the U.S. Code), apply specifically to minerals (other than oil and gas), and thus are of interest to the Bureau of Mines.Bureau of Mines involvement in this subject stems from the legislative mandate in the 1913 amendments to the Organic Act of 1910 (the Act creating the Bureau) to conduct economic investigations of the mineral industries. Congressional concern with the financial conditions in the economic and mineral industries was expressed more recently in the Mining and Minerals Policy Act of 1970 and in the National Materials and Minerals Policy, Research, and Development Act of 1980. The General Accounting Office recommended in 1976 that the Department of the Interior ""identify and evaluate laws and agency programs that affect maintaining and developing a sound and stable domestic mining and minerals industry"" (17, p. iii). 2Taxes, a source of revenue to governments, are a cost to private firms. Thus, taxes directly affect private sector profits, and unique tax provisions are designed to encourage (or discourage) activities such as agriculture, construction, or mining. Even the international competitiveness of the domestic mineral industries may be affected by taxes because many minerals are traded in world markets."

This report on the properties of aviation gasolines and aviation jet fuels produced in the United States during 1952 was made under a co-operative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. Analytical data are presented for 94 samples of aviation gasoline which include, for the first time in this series of reports, data on five samples of grade 108/135 aviation fuel. Data also are given for 34 samples of aviation jet fuel. The analyses were made on samples typical of the manufacturers? production in their laboratories and the results submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. The products of 20 manufacturers of aviation gasolines and of 16 producers of aviation jet fuels are represented.

"For lower stages of multinozzle micro-orifice impactors, as many as two thousand nozzles are uniformly arranged within a cluster diameter of 1.06 inches. In the impaction region the mass flowrate of the spent air increases along the radius and reaches a maximum at the periphery. This crossflow can significantly deflect the air jets of the outer nozzles, hence the characteristics of impaction changes.Investigators in heat transfer and fluid mechanics have studied the influence of crossflow on jet deflection and found the dimensionless deflection of the jet centerline X/Dn is a function of (S/Dn)(l/m) . only, here X is downstream coordinate measured from the center of the jet orifice, Sis the jet-to-plate distance, Dn is the orifice diameter and m is the jet/crossflow mass flux ratio defined as:"

The Bureau of Mines used the Burnett method and apparatus to determine the compressibility factors for helium and carbon dioxide mixtures at 0°, 10°, 20°, 23°, and 35° C and to pressures of 900 psia. Tables of compressibility factors and approximations of the virial coefficients are presented for seven binary mixtures as well as for helium and carbon dioxide. The results compare favorably with existing data.

The Bureau of Mines in its safety work has for a number of years advocated and recommended the use of permissible portable electric cap lamps for use in all mines. In the course of time required for the evolution from an unsatisfactory to an efficient and safe light, but encouraging increase in their use has been experienced in Alabama. As early as 1916, small installations of these safer lamps were made or an experimental basis by several operating companies, and the first complete mine installation eras made at the Virginia mine of the Gulf States Steel Co., July 1, 1918. From the experiments in 1316 and the complete equipment of the first mine in 1918 gradual progress has been made until there are now 30 installations with 10 operating companies; as a result 20 mines have been put entirely and 5 partly on, closed lights, and 3 companies equip their engineering departments; two installations of closed lights are maintained by other companies for emergency use. One of the mines partly on the electric cap lamp is an ore mine - the only one in Alabama (and one of the very few in the United States) that uses closed lights. A numerical method is presented to calculate the pressure distribution in a petroleum reservoir that has irregular boundaries. The computer program is straightforward and requires minimal data preparation. The method can also be used to determine pressure distribution in many other types of underground reservoirs. In this method, the grid solution of the fluid-flow equations in a reservoir that has regular boundaries (previously published) was expanded to handle irregular boundaries. The computer program locates grid points at the irregular boundaries. The method of mirror images is then used to form a special stencil to determine the pressure at each of these points. Two examples are presented to demonstrate the applicability of the method for virtually any reservoir configuration.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report examines the causes and consequences of longwall face sloughage. Theoretical relationships were developed to evaluate mechanisms that produce slough age. From these relationships, contributory factors were identified for further analysis in field efforts. A survey identified 12 mine sites with sloughage problems, and these were investigated. From these studies, it was determined that the depth of cover and mining height are the two most significant factors causing sloughage on longwall faces. Coalbed friability and cleat orientation also were found to be significant factors in promoting sloughage. It was concluded that sloughage is primarily a problem in thicker seams or seams with friable coalbeds, and that the problem is more severe as the depth of cover increases. Sloughage also was found to increase as the rate of mining decreased. Observations indicated that face slough age can increase dust generation significantly on longwall faces. Current efforts to control dust generation from longwall sloughage are described.

This Information Circular , one of a series published by the Bureau of Mines , reports on the methods and costs of mining and concentrating zinclead ore at the Highland Surprise mine in the Pine Creek area of the Coeur d'Alene region of Idaho . The mine is owned and operated by the Highland Surprise Consolidated Mining Co. , which supervises operations of the Nevada Stewart group of claims , which is adjacent on the northwest . These properties are at the extreme eastern end of a zone of fracturing that strikes northwest across the Pine Creek area . In fractures along this zone are the principal Pine Creek mines ; these are the Highland Surprise , Nevada Stewart , Sidney , Denver , V and Idaho , Liberal King , and Northern Light . Country rock at the Highland Surprise is argillite of the Prichard formation (Belt series ) . Fracturing has permitted the movement of mineral- izing agents that have replaced adjacent walls and crushed country rock with sulfides . Ore minerals are sphalerite and galena with accessory pyrite , chalcopyrite , pyrrhotite , and siderite . Three principal ore shoots were found on the Highland Surprise property . The Highland ore shoot was mined from outcrop to the 400 level . The Surprise ore body has been developed to a depth of 1,400 feet on the dip of the vein . The outcrop of the Surprise ore shoot was 150 feet long and 2 to 4 feet thick ; on the 1,150 ( lowest ) level , the ore shoot is 320 feet long and 10 to 17 feet thick , with good zinc content . Surprise ore shoot No. 2 occurs 250 feet west of No. 1 and has been mined from the 500 to the 1,000 level . From 353,000 tons of ore mined between 1910 and 1948 , the property has a recorded production of 256,000 ounces of silver , 7,500 tons of lead , 24,000 tons of zinc , and 412 tons of copper . Both shrinkage and cut and fill stoping methods are used at the Highland Surprise , but shrinkage is unsuitable for mining below the 700 level , because faulting has weakened the walls . Development of the Surprise ore , as well as exploration laterally and along the strike , is prosecuted steadily . A prospect heading is being pushed westward toward Nevada Stewart ground from the 700 level . The mill has a rated capacity of 275 tons per day and operates near capacity . Selective flotation makes zinc concentrate that is shipped to the Anaconda smelter and lead concentrate that is trucked to the Bunker Hill smelter at Kellogg .

The average quantity of heat needed to refine a barrel of crude oil in 1934 was 638,000 B.t.u., or about as much heat energy as contained in 5 gallons of fuel.oil. Although the total heat utilized in 1934 was slightly above 1933, crude runs to stills increased 4 percent, hence the average requirement per barrel declined from 660,000 B.t.u. in 1933 to 638,000 B.t.u. in 1934 (see fig. 1). The average for 1934 constitutes a new record for firing efficiency, being just under the previous low of 1929. Heat consumption at refineries depends on many factors, of which the trends in yields of gasoline and lubricating oils are probably most important. The yield of gasoline is indicative of activity at cracking plants, which typo of plant utilizes more thou the average amount of heat per gallon of product. The yield of lubricating oils is indicative of the extent to which crude oil is refined; that is, it takes considerably more heat to refine a barrel of crude through lubricating oils than it does to separate only gasoline and kerosene. The yield of gasoline decreased from 43.7 percent in 1933 to 43.4 percent in 1934; on the other hand, the yield of gas oil and fuel oil increased. Although the yield of lubricating oils increased slightly in 1934 the theoretical increase in fuel requirements probably was offset by technical improvements, such as solvent refining. Although no outstanding technical developments of a fuel-saving nature were made in 1934, some progress undoubtedly was recorded. Heat exchangers, an effective fuel-saving device, wore enlarged, and some refiners now take off several cuts before the crude reaches the pipe stills. The total capacity of pipe stills increased 2.5 percent in 1934, and many of the less efficient shell stills were torn out.
