During the past several years, alunite from the Marysvale (Utah) region has been the subject of investigation by the Electrometallurgical Section of the Bureau of Mines. The nature and occurrence of this mineral, with considerable data on the Utah deposits, together with a number of results of preliminary experiments, have been given in a previous report.6/ The geology of the Marysvale region has been reviewed recently.7/ The present paper reports the results obtained by a method involving the sintering of alunite with boric acid and subsequent treatment of the sinter to produce alumina and potassium sulphate.

In connection with, a stream-pollution-research project, a colorimetric method was developed for concentrations of 1 to 30 p.p.m, of pine oil in water. The method depends on the stable bluish-green color produced when pine oil is reacted with vanillin-hydrochloric acid reagent at 60° C. for 25 minutes. The colorimetric reaction actually determines alphaterpineol, the principal component in pine oil. Some waters may require a special preparation in which ion-exchange resins are used to remove interference. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The author wishes to express his appreciation to A. A. A study of mining methods and underground practices as they influence injury from falls of roof or coal reveals data as to the location in the mine where such injuries occur with the greatest frequency and as to some of the methods and practices which are in use for the prevention of injury. This paper, which presents statistics bearing on the frequency and place of occurrence of accidents and discusses regulations and practices which have resulted in a low-frequency rates from falls of roof and coal in a few representative mines, takes its information from mine-accident reports and from the results of studies conducted in a group of 80 mines in the bituminous coal fields of Western Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia. The statistics from this group of mines cover periods of one to four years but average 2 years and 7 months. During this time these mines produced over 110,400,000 tons of coal, equivalent to one-fifth of the annual production of all bituminous mines in the United States. The coal beds of the mines in the group studied are mostly flat, with local pitches of moderate degree. A number of mining plans are in use, each of which follows a general system of multiple entries, gross entries, and rooms. Room and pillar in panels either advancing, retreating, or half advance and half retreat, and the block system are employed. The methods of pillar extraction are by splitting, slabbing, pocket-and-stump, and open end. It is hoped that in presenting some of the details of the methods and practices at particular mines of this group which have commendable records in the prevention of injury some goad may accrue to many other bituminous mines which have similar natural conditions.

This investigation was undertaken by the Bureau of Nines to determine the effects of impurity levels on the mechanical properties of columbium at low temperatures. High-purity, electron-bombardment-melted columbium was purchased and used as a basis material. Variations in impurity levels were obtained by arc-melting charges containing definite amounts of added impurities. Tensile tests were conducted at low temperatures. Results showed the almost pure basis metal to be ductile at minus 194° C., the lower limit of the range used, Ductility of less pure columbium appeared to depend on interstitial element content. The ductile-to-brittle transition temperature appeared to be raised by increasing carbon content in the range of 50 to 730 parts per million, nitrogen content in the range of 50 to 200 parts per million, or total interstitial element content in the range of 240 to 1,380 parts per million. Some evidence was obtained indicating that decreasing cold work also raised the transition temperature, but recrystallization appeared to have no effect on it. Variations in interstitial element levels appeared to have little or no effect on ultimate strength of columbim in the range of room temperature to minus 194° C, Physical metallurgy studies of massive arc-melted and electron-bombardment- melted columbium were included in the columbium-tantalum research work assigned to the Albany Metallurgy Research Center in fiscal year 1959.

This paper gives the cost and describes the mining of 55 tons of nickel-bearing rock by hand methods from a prospect in southern Nevada, June 15, 1937, by the Mining Division of the Bureau of Mines. The geology, mineralogy, and problems related to future development also are discussed briefly. The main object was to obtain a 55-ton sample within the limited period during which funds were available; little time was available to make a first-hand detailed study of the possibility of commercial ore deposits being found. The sample was desired by the Metallurgical Division of the Bureau for experimental purposes at the Electro-Metallurgical Station at Boulder City, Nev. The term "ore" is used loosely in the following discussion to designate dike material containing nickel and copper, without consideration of its commercial value. Natural gas and mixtures of natural gas and hydrogen were used as fuels in a laboratory engine to determine the relationship of emissions to air-fuel ratio and to establish practical lean limits for air-fuel ratio. Synthetic gas manufactured from coal (Synthane) and natural gas were used as fuels in a vehicle to obtain comparative data on emissions and performance. Results showed that lean limits for air-fuel ratio when using hydrogen-enriched natural gas were extended significantly beyond Chat of natural gas. Synthane pro¬duced exhaust that was significantly less reactive than exhaust from natural gas. With lean air-fuel ratios, the acceleration performance of a vehicle fueled with Synthane was improved over its performance when fueled with natural gas.

"INTRODUCTION Ethyl mercaptan (CH3,CH2SH), a combustible organic liquid of the thioalcohol type, is employed at an odorant in many types of fuel gases and dangerous atmospheres, which in themselves are devoid of characteristic odors, to give warring against leakage of such gases or atmospheres into places where they might constitute health or explosion hazards.Ethyl mercaptan has a penetrating disagreeable odor resembling that of onions, garlic, hydrogen sulfide, or rotting cabbage, that exceedingly low concentrations of it can be detected. The of odorants as a beans of detecting leakage of gases and atmospheres has been investigated extensively by chemists and engineers of the Bureau of Mines, and numerous reports as to its value have been published."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines and the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) are participating jointly in a research program to evaluate the strength characteristics and air-leakage resistance of various proposed seal designs for use in underground coal mines. The full-scale seals were constructed in the USBM's experimental mine at the Lake Lynn Laboratory, air-leakage tested, then subjected to pressure pulses of 20 psig or greater. bjected to pressure pulses of 20 psig or greater. In experiments prior to this study, seven seal designs using solid-concrete blocks were tested. Only the standard-type seal passed the explosion and air-leakage criteria. Tests also were performed on four seals constructed with low-density foam blocks. All four of these seal designs withstood the pressure pulse. In more recent studies, nine cementitious foam seal designs of varying thicknesses and densities were investigated. Six of the nine designs successfully survived the explosion overpressures. Six wood- block convergence seals also have been tested. The typical 3-ft-thick, wood-block seal design currently used in many coal mines did not maintain its integrity, in the absence of convergence forces, following the explosion test. Five modified wood-block seals successfully withstood the 20-psig pressure pulse. Based on these tests, three alternative seal construction materials, cementitious foam, low-density foam block, and wood, have been approved by MSHA for use in underground coal mines.

This paper outlines briefly results of seismic measurements recorded in the vicinity of quarry blasting under practical operating conditions. The data cover field work done from January to the middle of August 1930, during which time records were made of 61 blasts in 19 quarries. Of the tests made, one was in biotite-gneiss, two in dolomite, two in a flintlike volcanic complex, three in gabbrodiorite, five in trap rock, and six in limestone. One quarry was in Alabama, two were in South Carolina, two in New York, four in Kentucky, five in Connecticut, and five in Massachusetts. Explosive charges ranged from 0.30 pound to 41,900 pounds, and the method of shooting varied from mud caps through hammer and wagon drill holes to churn drill holes and coyote tunnel shots.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory investigations with the objective of developing an alternative process for recovering cobalt and copper from complex sulfide concentrates. Processes currently used depend largely upon precipitation techniques to remove impurities and recover cobalt from sulfate liquors prepared by oxidative pressure leaching of the sulfide concentrates. The Bureau conducted bench-scale research on a process for treating cobaltite concentrates, comprising (1) oxidative pressure leaching, (2) jarosite precipitation followed by H202 oxidation and pH control to remove iron and arsenic, (3) copper solvent extraction with a mixed hydroxyoxime-amine extractant, (4) copper electrowinning from recirculating acidic strip liquor, (5) selective cobalt extraction from copper solvent extraction raffinate with a phosphinic acid extractant, and (6) electrowinning of cobalt from a recirculating weak acid strip liquor. Overall cobalt and copper recoveries were 91.7 and 84.1 pct, respectively. Electrowon products assayed 99.8 pct Co and 99.89 pct Cu.

The objectives of this research were: 1. to determine the stability relationships of coal mine roof rocks which are cut by fractures or intersecting joints with and without roof bolts, under various sets of conditions including horizontal formation pressures, inclination and coefficient of friction of joints, bolt loads, roof spans and rock properties; and 2. to develop criteria for the design of roof bolt sys terns for such roofs. The problem was studied by mathematical finite element models and by laboratory models. From the results of the mathematical and laboratory models, equations were derived to express the relationships listed above for cracked, single-layered roof beams and design tables for such beams are included. The analysis was then extended to include multi-layered cracked beams reinforced by roof bolts and a method for analyzing and designing bolting patterns for such roof rocks is presented.

Uniaxial compressive strength of rock is usually determined in the laboratory from cylindrical samples that vary in diameter from 5/8 to 8 inches, using a spherically seated compression head of unspecified size. The Bureau of Mines conducted a series of tests on limestone, marble, sand-stone, granite, and plaster of paris to determine the influence of the spherical head sizes and the specimen diameters themselves on the uniaxial compressive strength. Cylindrical samples of several different diameters of each rock type, all having a length of twice their diameter, were prepared and broken using at least three different diameter spherical heads. Analysis of the data shows that spherical head size does not significantly affect the uniaxial compressive strength of cylindrical rock samples. However, the diameter of the rock specimens does significantly affect the uniaxial compressive strength. Within the range of specimen diameters tested, a coefficient of variation of 6.4 percent for plaster of paris can be attributed to the selection of specimen diameter alone. Similarly, a maximum coefficient of variation of 4.7 percent for the rock types tested can be attributed to the specimen diameter alone.

The objective of this U.S. Bureau of Mines hydrologic-subsidence investigation was to evaluate the effects of longwall mining on the local ground water regime through field monitoring and numerical modeling. Field data were obtained from multiple-position borehole extensometers (MPBX's) that were used to measure subsurface displacements. Survey monuments were installed to measure mining-induced surface deformations. Numerous drawdown and recovery tests were performed to characterize hydrologic properties of the overburden strata. Coreholes were drilled above the study area to determine lithologic and strength characteristics of the overburden strata using the rock samples collected. Electronic recorders were installed on all monitoring wells to continuously monitor ground water levels in coordination with mining of the longwall panels. A combined finite element model of the deformation of overlying strata, and it's influence on ground water flow was used to define the change in local and regional water budgets. The predicted effects of the postmining ground water system determined by the model correlated well with field data collected from the fieldsite. Without an infiltration rate added to the model, a static decrease of 3.0 m (10 ft) in water level would occur due to mining of both longwall panels and if an infiltration rate was inputted in the model, no predicted long-term effects would occur to the ground water system.

A study was conducted by the Bureau of Mines to provide quarry operators with information regarding (1) the effects of jointing and bedding on rock fragmentation when bench blasting in two small-scale (2.5-ft) limestone benches, and (2) the successful use of inexpensive equipment and field techniques to determine the orientation and spacing of joints and bedding separations within the quarry. Using inexpensive equipment, such as a pocket transit and steel and paper tapes, joint and bedding separations were mapped and their frequencies measured. Results from two small-scale bench blasts in the Stewartville member of the Galena limestone formation showed that when the row of vertical blast-holes was oblique to the vertical joint orientations, the backface expression was outlined by two relatively large triangular protrusions (joint surfaces). In this blast, part of the rock burden was unbroken. When the line of vertical blastholes paralleled a predominant joint set, all of the rock burden was broken and displaced. The thickness of fragments that had been displaced by a blast correlated with the observed bedding thickness in the bench.

Bauxite, the principal source of aluminum, has been mined from deposits in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., since 1899; war needs have greatly stimulated production. Many of the ore deposits are basin-shaped and either outcrop or are covered by a shallow-depth overburden at their peripheries; these are mined by stripping and open-pit methods. When stripping becomes economically impracticable, incline shafts or slopes are sunk on the dips of the deposits, and underground mining is done on the retreat, using a room-and-pillar method.

The Bureau of Mines has been engaged in a systematic evaluation of the thermodynamic properties of combustion gases. These studies were designed to provide basic thermodynamic information of high accuracy, facilitating the theoretical study of flame and combustion phenomena.4 This report is the fifth of a series5/ presenting results of the study for particular fuel-oxidant systems. These calculations have as their objective the constant pressure flame temperature of acetylene-air for a range of pressures.

The Bureau of Mines investigated two alternative methods for treating a zirconium-bearing chloride-sulfate strip liquor to obtain reactor-grade Zr02. One method involves neutralization with NH3 and the other hydrothermal precipitation. The strip liquor was derived from zircon sand by a Bureau of Mines method for separating zirconium and hafnium via solvent extraction with a tertiary amine. Neutralization with NH3 to precipitate hydrous zirconium oxide required 0.9 to 1.1 g NH3 per gram of zirconium. The NH3 can be recovered for recycle. Zr02 that met reactor-grade specifications was produced by precipitation with NH3? Hydrothermal precipitation of Zr02 from strip liquor required that the solution be maintained at 2600 C and 680 psi for 10 min and in a non-corrodible pressure vessel. In bench-scale experiments both methods gave-zirconium recoveries greater than 99 pct.

This report is a compilation of results of preliminary tests on scheelite (tungsten) ores and tailings. These investigations were made to assist in establishing satisfactory treatment methods for small-scale concentrator operations, or to indicate a. method for conserving previously lost mineral values in old tailings, if possible. A discussion of test procedures is included, as it was felt that this would add to understanding the results reported under the several projects. The treatment of scheelite ores has become more or less standardized. Important differences occur in textures of ores from various mining districts. However, and this must be considered when planning ore-dressing operations. In most of the present investigations, only a limited amount of work was done, usually just enough to answer a specific question in regard to a particular ore or concerning local conditions. Two methods of treatment included gravity concentration, magnetic separation, and flotation.

Among the numerous Low-grade manganese deposits in eastern Aroostook County, Maine, the Dudley deposit near Mapleton in the northern district is one of the few known to contain an appreciable tonnage averaging above 10 percent manganese. The ore body, consisting of stratified manganiferous hematitic shale, is over 5,000 feet long and ranges in width from 30 to 175 feet. The deposit was extensively explored during 1942-44 by the Manganese Ore Co., a subsidiary of M. A. Hanna Co. of Cleveland, Ohio. Data obtained from this work were made available to the State and Federal Geological Surveys for estimating ore reserves. An estimate by the Maine Geological Survey, using a 10-percent manganese cutoff and to a depth of 200 feet, shows 609,000 long tons of manganese metal in material averaging 12.6 percent manganese. By lowering the cutoff limit to 5 percent manganese, the estimate was increased to 919,000 long tons of metallic manga¬nese in material averaging, 10.4 percent manganese,
