"The first study of this subject has been made in Illinois, but as opportunity affords, similar studies will be made in other States. It is hoped that the data obtained will assist the coal—mining industry to standardise the forms of leases, and so avoid some of the abstruse and ambiguous clauses which may be found in many of then and the consequent liability of costly litigation.In some of the publications of the Illinois Mining Investigations prepared under a cooperative agreement with the U. S. Bureau of Mines, the Illinois State Geological Survey and the Engineering Experiment Station of the University of Illinois, the coal areas of the State have been dividedinto eight geological districts, each district being treated separately.report covers District No. VI of that classification, and it is hopedstudies of the other districts will be completed in the near future and similar results published.The report includes a short description of the geological condition the character and quality of the coal and the nature of the surface, data for which have been taken largely from the Illinois Geological Survey publications.Mining methods and percentages of recovery are mentioned, together physisal conditions, market and transportation facilities, because all of these factors have a bearing on royalties and leasing conditions."

The water sensitivity of the oil - gas - producing sandstones in three fields in the Patrick Draw area of southwestern Wyoming was estimated by laboratory testing . The tests used to estimate sensitivity , which is a measure of the loss of well productivity if the producing formation is invaded by fresh water , are : Porosity ; permeability to gas , water , and brines ; saturation characteristics with air displacing water from the samples and by mercury injection ; and identification of clay minerals by X - ray diffraction . Laboratory results indicate that the degree of water sensitivity of the sands in the Patrick Draw, Table Rock , and Desert Springs fields vary , in that order , from moderately sensitive to highly sensitive . The main cause of the sensitivity appears to be the movement of fine particles in the pores , but the swelling of a small amount of an expandible clay mineral may also contribute to the permeability reduction observed in the samples . Laboratory results further indicate that the permeability of the sands to fresh water is seriously reduced if they are first flushed with sodium chloride brine ; calcium chloride brine is less harmful to the sands than sodium chloride brine . The low original permeability of the oil sand in the Patrick Draw field , together with its moderate sensitivity , indicate that the rate of water injection for the secondary recovery of oil will be low . Limited field experience in two pilot - injection wells confirms this prediction .

"Ventilation is one of the meet important factors in mining, although until recent years less thought has probably been given to effective ventilation than to any other one phase of mining. In the past, very little, if any, attention was given air courses until they became so constricted by falls that the volume of air was greatly reduced; and, in addition, the stoppings and doors were so poorly constructed that only a very small percentage of air reached the face workings.As a matter of fact, mines have been visited where the volume of air being circulated in certain sections was much larger than in others, and where the management was striving to increase the flow of air in those sections with the least air current, believing the ventilation to be deficient. After sampling and analyzing the return air from the various sections in such mines it has been found that the quality of the air in certain places with the largest flow was more impure than in some of those with the least flow.In past years, practically all mine fans were operated by steam-driven engines supplied with steam from the mire boiler plant. No check was made on the steam consumption or the power cost of operating the fan, therefore the management had very little if any definite information as to cost of ventilating the mine.With the increased use of electrically-driven equipment in mines electricity is being used more and more to drive mine ventilating fans, and since in many instances the current is purchased from central power plants operators have come to realize that in many cases the cost of operating the fans is very high. Some engineers estimate that it ranges from 20 to 50 per cent of the total power cost of the mine. This information, together with the fact that mines are now being developed on a larger scale, requiring larger quantities of air for the men to dilute the gases liberated, has caused the large progressive companies to make, a more comprehensive study of mine ventilation, resulting in a decided improvement in the quality and quantity of air at the face workings, as well as reducing materially the ventilating costs."

A separator for minerals of low magnetic susceptibility and fine particle size in a water suspension is described. A ring-shaped matrix of ferromagnetic fragments rotating so as to pass successively through magnetic-field and field-free regions provides for the separation. Application is illustrated in the separation of hematite and ilmenite from quartz.

The Navajo Nation is the largest Indian tribe in the United States and occupies a reservation encompassing about 16 million acres in northeastern Arizona, southeastern Utah, and northwestern New Mexico, with three satellite reservations in western and west-central New Mexico. Coal mining is conducted on a commercial scale at four large surface mines: two are in northeastern Arizona and the other two are in western and northwestern New Mexico. The principal coal-bearing region in Arizona is the Black Mesa coal field, which underlies about 3,200 square miles in the northeastern part of the state. The Black Mesa coal field lies within the boundaries of the Navajo and Hopi Indian Reservations and makes a significant contribution to the economies of both tribes. Coal reserves in this field are estimated to be 352 million tons, less than one-tenth of one percent of U.S. coal reserves. This coal was first mined by prehistoric Indians as fuel for cooking and heating. It has been estimated that the Indians removed more than 100,000 tons between 1300 and 1600 A.D. The coal-bearing region of the Navajo Reservation in New Mexico is located in the San Juan Basin. The Navajo Mine, which supplies coal for the Four Comers Power Plant, is located in this area. The Office of Surface Mining's Albuquerque, New Mexico, Field Office is responsible for regulating mining and reclamation on Navajo land. The Navajo Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved May 16,1988.

"SUMMARYDuring December 1945, the Bureau of Mines began churn drilling the Winchester zinc deposit, 11 miles south of Joplin in Newton County, Mo. The deposit lies in a virgin area northwest of the Seneca fault. It is one of several deposits partly proven by drilling but never developed.Logs of 28 privately drilled holes had indicated a substantial tonnage without delimiting the deposit. It appeared that additional drilling might increase this reserve sufficiently to justify mining. A, total of 6,33 feet of churn drilling was completed in 17 holes drilled by the Bureau of Mines. Twelve of the holes penetrated minable ore extending the length of the known deposit and materially increasing its estimated tonnage.INTRODUCTIONDuring May 1943, the Winchester property in Newton County, was visited by an engineer 3/ of the Bureau of Mines, accompanied by Dr. A. N. Winchester, owner, and Charles Keith, lessee of the property. At the request and with the assistance of these gentlemen, examination of the property was undertaken. Logs of 28 churn-drill holes were collected, hole locations were surveyed, and available historical data were obtained. It was concluded that although existing drill holes indicated considerable reserves, additional drilling might increase the tonnage substantially. In addition, it was believed that better knowledge of this ore deposit could be obtained by drilling further, and this knowledge could, in turn, be applied to other less proven deposits in the same field."

When explosions have occurred in mines where rock dust has been used to some extent, generally to a very limited extent, the press has immediately characterized those mines as "rock-dusted." To persons familiar with the method of rock-dusting, it is apparent that if rock-dusting is done properly, if all mine surfaces are rock-dusted to within at least 40 feet of the faces of rooms and entries, and if the incombustible content of the dust is more than 65 per cent, there is little likelihood that an explosion of coal-dust will occur. The report that an explosion has occurred in a "rock-dusted" mine immediately conveys to the mind of the alert safety advocate the information that the mine is inadequately rock-dusted or that either dust sampling of the rock-dusted surfaces has not been done or, if done, the mine has not been redusted with sufficient promptness. Rules for Collection of Samples Collection of dust samples is by no means intricate, but a few simple rules must be kept in mind if the results are to be dependable. A sample must represent the true average conditions of the dust in the section or zone in which it is taken, and therefore 'the point at which the sample is to be collected must be selected with care. During an explosion much if not all of the dust on the ribs, roof, timber, and road in the affected region is blown into the air; the sample, therefore, should contain all loose dust and material on: the surfaces to a depth of about 1 inch, if that amount is present. If there is considerable sand locally along the track, care must be taken not to include enough of this material to vitiate the sale and distort the results; however, if the sand is distributed throughout the region being sampled it should be included. Dust should not be collected from recesses in the ribs, such as hitches cut for timber, as the character of the dust in such places is often different from that on the ribs proper. Samples should not be collected at points where the dusting machine has been loaded or at a point where the machine has stopped and discharged for a longer period than at other points on the entry or in the rooms. In short, the sample must represent AVERAGE CONDITIONS, and if there is any doubt as to the character of the dust it is far better to have too much combustible matter than too much incombustible matter in the sample, as it is best to err on the side of safety if it is necessary to err.

"INTRODUCTION Throughout the history of coal washing, the jig has been one of the most important coal-cleaning appliances. In 1935 34.7 percent of the 45,361,021 tons of clean coal produced was the product of jigging. 4/ Previous to 1928, most of the jigs used in the United States were of the piston type, with which sufficient mobility to allow stratification in bed is imparted by the reciprocating up-and-down movement of a piston in the water compartment adjacent to the screen compartment. In 1928, the Baum type of jig was introduces in this country and has since come into wide spread use. In this type, water pulsations are imparted by application and release of compressed air to the water compartment. All prior studies of the mechanism of seperating cleared coal from impurity by piston-type jigs. 5/ The same laws of settling, of course, apply to both types, piston or Baum, but the character of the separation with the Baum type may be modified more easily because of the flexibility with which air may be handled, as distinguished from the fixed action of eccentrics commonly used in piston jigs. Since no detailed studies are available to show the performance, that is, the character of the separation between coal and impurity, of the Baum type the Bureau of Mines undertook the investigation recorded in this report."

Material and energy balances for stockpiled lignite were calculated by computer simulation techniques to determine the occurrence of spontaneous heating. Data on properties of lignite which affect spontaneous heating were required. In some cases, best values from reported data were utilized; in other cases, new data were developed. These include specific studies on the rate and conditions that influence oxidation, heat of oxidation, heat of wetting, specific heat, thermal conductivity, and permeability of stockpiles to air. These data are presented and discussed in detail for possible application to other studies. Results of computer simulations confirm past field experience on the storage of lignite containing as-mined moisture, and predict a greater risk of heat occurrence in stockpiles of dried lignite where experience is lacking. Successful storage was predicted for dried lignite of 20 pct moisture content, if it were cooled after drying and compacted to an interparticle void fraction of 9 pct (bulk density of 67 lb/cu ft) compared to 10 pet void fraction (72 lb/cu ft) for as-mined lignite.

The continued growth of steel production in the Western States is contingent upon the development of new iron ore sources. Recent development of economical techniques for concentrating and agglomerating taconites has focused attention on the low-grade magnetite deposits near Atlantic City, Wyo., as potentially important sources of iron ore for blast furnace smelting. Therefore, the Federal Bureau of Mines has made comparative evaluations of blast furnace burdens that incorporate pellets produced from Atlantic City concentrates. The Bureau also has evaluated the relative effect of Utah coke on blast furnace performance, using a high-quality Eastern coke as a basis for comparison. This work was done in the Bureau's experimental blast furnace at Bruceton, Pa. Tests determined the maximum wind rate that could be used while a continuous stock movement was maintained in the furnace. The furnace was operated at wind rates ranging from 800 to 1,400 std. c.f.m., them maximum limit of the blowers for the 1.75 in.-diameter tuyeres used. Using a normal Utah ore burden and Utah coke, the furnace went into a tight hanging condition with a wind rate above 950 std, c.f.m. Using the experimental pellet burden again with Utah coke, the wind rate could be increased to 1,000 std, c.f.m. and probably to 1,050 std. c.f.m, before tight hanging occurs. This represents an increase of 5 to 10 pct. in the wind rate. The experimental results indicate an accompanying increase of iron production, as much as 8 pct.

The Young America lead-silver-zinc mine in Stevens County, Wash., was investigated by the Bureau of Mines during parts of 1946, 1947, and 1948. Results of the investigation are described herein. The mine is 1/4 mile northeast of Bossburg, Wash., the nearest railway station. An excellent paved highway (No. 22) connects Bossburg with Colville, Wash., 23 miles to the south. The property was located in October 1885. It is credited with a production of 2,178 tons of shipping ore since 1901. The shipping ore averaged 7 percent lead, 7.7 percent zinc, and 16.1 ounces silver per ton. The property is under lease and option to Walter E. Morris and Perry Leighton of Colville, Wash. The deposit crops out on a steep limestone bluff overlooking the Columbia River. The country rock is a highly metamorphosed, brecciated, marbleized limestone (Northport formation).

A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by the Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations No. 4251. The factual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigation beginning with No. 4251, of which this is the fifth. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location and name are shown on the appropriate half-township map. The description of each half township is followed by a description of each deposit developed in that half township. The 14 half-township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled on the project except the deep holes drilled to test the geophysical anomalies. The locations of those holes show on figure 13 in Volume I. The descriptions of the deposits developed are followed by complete detailed logs of the drill holes. Many of the widely spaced exploratory holes did not discover bauxite of minable thickness and grade. The pertinent information obtained from the widely spaced exploratory drill holes has been summarized and tabulated, and a table for each half township is given with the discussion of that area.

"INTRODUCTION The Congress theme ""Improvement of Mine Productivity and Overall Economics by Modern Technology"" is probably beat: addressed by the subtheme allocated to this Plenary Session. It is appropriate that .Theme 1 emphasizes the simple point that effective use of geotechnical information is the key to improving mine productivity. In essence, this means that: (1) geological and geomechanics, (rock mechanics) data must be collected in sufficient quantity and of high quality; (ii) data interpretation must be performed specifically for purposes of engineering design; (iii) innovative design approaches should be used to bring about Improvements in productivity and safety.While, each of these three aspects .may: seem obvious to any mining engineer it is a fact that the above sequence is seldom followed and as a result, mining engineering not infrequently lags, behind other branches of engineering when it comes to design creativity, efficiency and safety.. . After all, mining is still-one of the most hazardous occupations and we are gathered here to discuss, at the highest world professional forum, how to use more effectively the modern technology. This however, does not mean that mining engineers are less capable than other engineers or that their achievements are any lesser; far from it! Mining engineers are the cream of the engineering society on whose efforts depends the welfare of mankind. Moreover, they have produced minerals and coal evergrowing quantities against evergrowing difficulties. Yet, we must and can become even better because we are not making full use of the modern technology and rock mechanics knowledge already at our disposal, and. we are not being innovative enough to the full extent of .our capabilities."

"A search for manganese ore by core-drill exploration was carried out by the Bureau of Mines in the Philipsburg mining district in Granite County, Mont., in 1939 and 1940. This work was based on detailed studies of the manganese ore bodies of the district previously made by the Geological Survey.In 1949 further search for manganese in the district was deemed advisable. Diamond drilling was begun the following year as a joint program by the Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines with the primary purposes of probing ore-leasing structures and extending the limits of known ore bodies. A secondary objective was to test a geologic theory based on a new conception of manganese-ore localization. The exploration targets were designated and the drilling results interpreted by the Geological Survey, and the Bureau of Mines was responsible for the drilling, sampling, and core handling. Improved drilling equipment and methods were utilized in an effort to obtain better core recoveries than resulted from the earlier drilling campaign.The Philipsburg mining district, Granite County, Mont., is 27 miles south of Drurrnnond, about 45 miles airline northwest of Butte, and 1 mile east of Philipsburg. During the course of the investigation patented lode-mining claims owned by the American Machine & Metals, Inc., the Contact Mines, Inc., and the Moorlight Mining Co. were diamond drilled.The district has been an important source of domestic manganese dioxide ore since local recognition of the mineral's importance during World War I. Peak annual output in 1918 of about 127,000 tons of manganese ore was utilized principally by the steel industry. A small but relatively steady output has persisted to the present to satisfy demands by battery manufacturers for battery-grade manganese dioxide.The known manganese deposits of the district are in sedimentary rocks of Paleozoic age. These rocks lie along a north-trending anticline traversed by a series of east-west tension veins. The east flank of the anticline terminates at a steep-dipping fault contact against a small granodiorite batholith.Replacement deposits of manganese oxides and carbonates occur locally in or closely associated with tension veins cutting calcareous rocks, or adjacent to the intrusive. Rhodochrosite has been a common accessory mineral in deposits valuable chiefly for lead, zinc, and silver. Some of the replacement deposits characteristically are irr2gular in outline, whereas others have fairly regular walls marking the limits of favorable beds."

MFIRE is useful for the analysis of ventilation networks under thermal and mechanical influence MFIRE simu¬lates a mine&apos;s ventilation system and its response to altered ventilation parameters, external influences, and internal influences Extensive output enables detailed quantitative analysis of the effects of the proposed alteration on the ventilation system MFIRE was written in FORTRAN 77 and compiled with Microsoft° FORTRAN for the Intel 8086-8088 central processing units The source code is listed in appendix A for users who wish to modify the source code for operation on other computers MFIRE MODIFICATIONS OF MTU-BOM CODE The program described in Bureau of Mines Informa¬tion Circular 8901 has become known as the MTU-BOM codes MFIRE is an evolutionary product of the MTU¬BOM code with major improvements and enhancements 6 For users previously familiar with the MTU-BOM code, the following is a listing of the major improvements and enhancements incorporated by MFIRE 1 The length of an airway is an input value, LA The elevation difference of the airway is calculated from the elevation input, Z, in both programs It is possible for a data file to describe an airway that is shorter than its el¬evation difference The MTU-BOM code does not check for this error and uses the values of LA and Z This does not cause a computational problem, only a simulation problem MFIRE issues a warning message for this case, and the airway length is made equal to the elevation dif¬ference if LA is less than Z 2 To evaluate rock temperatures (average wall surface temperature of airway before a fire), it is assumed that the air temperature at an airway entrance is equal to the air temperature at the airway starting junction, and that the air temperature at the airway exit is equal to the air tem¬perature at the exit junction. The MTU-BOM code follows this assumption in all cases When a rock temperature of less than 0° F is calculated, an average temperature is used to represent the rock temperature of the airway MFIRE uses the same principle, except the consideration of unlikely rock temperatures When the exit junction of an airway is the atmosphere (a fixed condition junction), the air tempera¬ture at the exit is made equal to the air temperature at the airway beginning If an unlikely value of wall temperature (<0° F or > 150° F) results from calculations, a message is issued and the rock temperature is set equal to the air temperature at the airway exit The program user can always input rock temperature (TROCK) for an airway to override the calculated value. 3 MFIRE allows use of an optional reference airflow rate to define and limit the heat generation of a fire source This allows the simulation model to more closely resemble a real fire and to improve simulation conver¬gence Heat generation corresponds, but is not linearly related to airflow rates reaching the fire In the simula¬tion, heat generation is calculated from oxygen consump¬tion and is directly related to the variable incoming airflow Use of this optional reference airflow rate allows the heat generation to vary, but in a damped, user defined manner When the airflow rate passing through a fire source is equal to its reference airflow rate, the data items describ¬ing the fire source are not modified If the airflow rate is lower or higher than its reference airflow rate, the data items used to define the fire source are modified according to the following equations

A gas volumetric method was developed for determining metallic aluminum at the 0.01-to 0.3-percent level in 100-gram samples of recycled glass. The method is based on the measurement of the change in gas volume produced by the reaction 2 Al + 2 NaOH + 2 H2O ? 2 NaAl02 + 3 H2 using a simple apparatus assembled from readily available glassware. Apart from sampling errors, the precision of the method is within ±5 percent. A minor modification of the apparatus would extend the method to larger samples or samples of higher metallic aluminum content. Metallic iron and metallic zinc do not interfere at the concentrations found in recycled glass recovered from incinerator residues.

This paper is one of a series prepared for the United States Bureau of Mines discussing the methods used in crushing and grinding materials for cement manufacture, and deal particularly with the methods used at the Howes Cave plant of the North American Cement Corporation. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total production costs might in many instances cause embarrassment to individual producers as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory tests to determine the slurry transport and deposition properties of coal waste. A 188.5-ft pipe test loop was constructed with instruments to measure density, flow, and power and discharge, suction, and differential pressures. A 20-ton ample of Western coal waste was crushed and screened to 100 pct minus 1/2 in. Eight loop tests using this graded waste were run at slurry densities ranging from 1.15 (25 wt-pct solids) to 1.46 (60 wt-pct sol-ids) 0 The resultant friction-&apos;pressure gradients ranged from 0,06 to 0.24 ft of water per foot of 4-in standard steel pipe. Particle-size degradation was significant.. In a typical loop test lasting 25 min, the minus 200-mesh fraction increased from 19 pct to 34 pct. Deposition tests showed that without the use of a flocculant, the slurries would not dewater when left to stand for 1 week. With flocculant, additional water was releas2d; however, the settled slurries remained thixotropic. Further testing is necessary to determine their suitability for use as backfill material in active mines.
