In extracting helium from natural gas at Bureau of Mines helium plants, a continuous analysis of the helium content of inlet and outlet gas streams is required to determine extraction efficiency. An analyzer, using established principles of gas chromatography to effect the analysis, has been developed by the Bureau of Mines to meet this need. It will record the helium content of inlet or discharge gases from helium-extraction plants every five minutes, continuously, without the attendance of an operator. A 25-inch column of activated charcoal is used as a partitioning agent; nitrogen is the carrier gas; and a hot-wire, thermal-conductivity cell is the detector. A 1.0 mv, strip chart indicates the unbalance of the detector cell, Sample size is 0.37 cc, and carrier gas flow rate is 75 cc, per minute. Significant improvements in helium extraction have been demonstrated by using the chromatograph in three helium-extraction plants.

Gob holes are routinely used by the mining industry to vent methane from gobs and to prevent it from entering the mine ventilation system. In some cases, flows from gob holes are measured by centering an anemometer on the end of a discharge pipe. These measurements are erroneous and tend to be high by as much as 30 pct. The Bureau of Mines deter- mined method factors (correction factors) for anemometer measurements taken in this manner. Method factors for 4-, 6-, and 8-in (10.2-, 15.2-, and 20.3-cm) ID pipe are 0.68, 0.71, and 0.78, respectively. Comparisons between horizontal and vertical flows indicated no significant change in method factors. Consequently, the method factors for horizontal pipe flows can be applied to vertical upward flows.

"The economic features of coal mining must take into account the drain on the man power. Study over a recent 5-year period reveals an average yearly loss of 2,125 underground men, of whom 1,182 are killed by falls of roof and coal, and according to recent data compiled by the Bureau of Mines it is estimated that 54,000 men sustain lost—time disabling injuries from the same cause.Under normal activity of the mines approximately 50 lives are taken by falls of roof during every 10 days the mines are operated, or 5 persons are killed per day, which, at a compensation charge of $5,000 each, amounts to $25,000 per day. Add to this the similar number killed by causes other than by falls of roof and we have $50,000 as an approximate daily fatality charge for each day the mines operate. On the basis of 200 working days per year, this amounts to the alarming figure of $10,000,000 annually. An investment at 5 per cent to yield this amount would require $200,000,000, which is equivalent to a capital investment of $0.40 per ton of coal, produced annually, on the basis of 500 million tons. These figures apply only to fatalities for which a fixed or stated amount is paid for compensation and do not include the compensation and hospitalization paid for the approximately 103,000 upon whom idleness is enforced by a lost-time disability injury. In one State having an annual production equal to approximately 30 per cent of the total bituminous production of the United States, the most recent data shows that for each fatality there are eight serious injuries causing 60 days or more lost time. The frequency rate of accidents for that State is less than the average for the United States, and so a conservative comparison may be made by using the figures of that State in estimating the total serious injuries, which gives 16,000 as losing 60 days or more. The average number of underground employees in the coal mines of the United States for the past 10 years has been approximately 570,000; the annual underground fatalities amount to approximately 2,000 and non-fatalities to 108,000, or a total of 110,000, which means that one out of every 5.17 employees ,or 19.3 per cent, receives an injury which results in either a fatality or a lost-time disability; this figure in a little over five years will reach a number equivalent to 100 per cent of all underground workmen. Against this is the record of many miners who have worked 25 years or more without a lost—time disability injury, indicating that coal mining is not necessarily productive of injury or death to workers.In the matter of falls of roof, it is found that 85 to 87 per cent of all fatalities occur at the working face, face of a room or entry, or in pillar work. It is at the working face that the greatest roof hazards are encountered, and when about 75 per cent of the underground employees spend approximately 90 per cent of their working hours at the face, it is logical that there is where injury is most likely to occur.Although the roof hazards may vary in different beds of coal, experience has proved that roof hazards can be successfully controlled in all coal mines, essentially regardless of the character of the roof if constant care and attention are given by the management and employees in applying the principle of safety. In almost every mining district some companies maintain an extremely low frequency rate of injury, whereas in the same district with essentially the same roof conditions the opposite is true.A study has recently been made of a number of reports upon fatalities in one district of one of the principal coal—producing States and it showed that 50 lives had been lost at 23 mines as the result of falls of roof or sides. These reports were made by the mine officials, safety engineers, and safety committees and an attempt was made to give both the cause and the person or factor responsible for the fatality. The Bureau of Mines studied the displacement of the roof in a portion of the Bear coal mine near Somerset, Colo, Horizontal-and vertical-displacement gages were installed in a five-entry section during normal room-and-pillar mining procedures. Monitoring of the roof continued until this section was mined out. Displacement measurements in combination with known time lapses between mining and bolting operations indicate that once support is achieved, the length of unsupported time does not appear to affect long-term roof stability in the mine under investigation.

Under a memorandum of agreement with Reynolds Metals Co., Richmond, VA, the Bureau of Mines studied the problem of corundum formation on refractory linings in aluminum recycling furnaces. A laboratory test was developed for evaluating refractories in contact with molten recycled aluminum and identifying the mechanism of corundum formation. A test apparatus was designed and constructed to evaluate the performance of refractory samples. Corundum mechanism formation studies indicated that corundum formed on refractories when there is metal penetration. Once corundum forms, it acts as a wick allowing the molten aluminum to move to the surface where it is oxidized, thus causing further growth of the corundum. Phosphoric acid treatment or a spinel mortar coating prevented corundum formation on the 70-and 90-pct-A1203 refractories.

The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the ash-softening temperature, the free-swelling index, and the Hardgrove grind-ability index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions4 issued by the Bureau of Mines; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor; if it is not, a price adjustment is made. Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. In addition, the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.

Safety training materials appropriate for specific underground noncoal operations in the United States are often outdated or nonexistent. The Spokane Research Laboratory (SRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and H ealth has developed several new training tools, including three videos on common underground activities, software that will allow trainers to create a virtual training mine using their own mine map, and toolbox training materials. SRL is working closely with industry in the development of these tools. Teams of safety professionals are involved in the early stages, and actual mines and miners are involved throughout the production phase. This presentation describes the development process and results of SRL’s safety training projects.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has established a wire rope research laboratory to examine the factors that affect the life of wire rope. Ropes of sizes ranging from 3/4 to 2 in. in diameter and from 2 to 35 ft in length were tested to determine their breaking strength, elongation, and torque. This was done to characterize the test equipment on ropes used in mine hoisting systems.

This report presents a U.S. Bureau of Mines study to identify the causes of self-heating events beneath the floor of a deep underground coal mine. Mine samples from both heated and unheated areas were examined by various techniques, including visual, microscopic, thermal, chemical, and instrumental tests. The combined results led to the conclusion that pyrite (FeS2) oxidation was the prime cause of the beatings. However, adiabatic oven tests of selected samples did not indicate the effect of the pyrite on the self-heating process, probably because of the experimental conditions. A fast, simple procedure to assess the concentration of pyrite in the mine samples was developed, utilizing the reactivity of the sample with an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)

This is the second of a series of progress reports describing work undertaken at the San Manuel copper mine to study the geologic factors influencing block caving of the deposit. The first report described the work done from April 1954 to March 1956.3/ This report describes the progress from March 1956 through March 1958 and presents additional maps, factural data, inferences, and conclusions resulting from a continuation of the underground geological work. As outlined in these reports, the study thus far has shown that the principal geologic factors affecting block caving are structure, rock types, alteration, mineralization, oxidation, and presence of water. Structure is fundamentally the most important. Systematic fracturing governed the extent and grade of primary ore mineralization and tangibly affects the subsidence or ground movement, which extends from the mine workings to the surface because of the block caving.

A comprehensive study of all bituminous coal-mine fatalities occurring in Pennsyl¬ vania during the 5-year period, 1926-1930, was made to try to determine the factors that in¬ fluence accidents which cause these fatalities. During this study some two thousand reports of fatalities were reviewed, and pertinent information as to causes and influencing factors were tabulated therefrom. These tabulations are discussed in detail, and in some instances recommendations are made with a view to reducing the hazards in certain classes of these accidents.

This report abstracts project work performed under USBM Grant GO155003 during the period 4 November 1975 to 3 November 1976. The research was funded, as a continuance of previous support from USBM Grants GO133077 and G0155003, to gain further knowledge in mine electrical system safety. Five reports have been separately produced, all under the grant title, "Coal Mine Electrical System Evaluation," and are as follows: 1. Volume I - Continuous Monitoring, 2. Volume II - Transient Analysis, 3. Volume III - Shielded Cables, 4. Volume IV - Computer Modeling, and 5. Volume V - Battery and Battery-charging Safety. Abstracts of these comprise the balance of this document with one exception. The task ?d-c offsett currents," does not fall under the scope of the other report volumes and, further, the material to be presented does not justify a separate report. Hence, this subject concludes the Executive Summary.

The Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the City of Long Beach) Calif.) studied some physical factors effecting the deposition of barium sulfate scale in oil-well rotary pumps. Freshly formed barium sulfate was obtained by combining sulfate in sea water with barium from a barium chloride solution. The rate of scale deposition was measured quantitatively by weighing the pump impellers and diffusers. The results of the tests showed that coating the impellers with plastic significantly reduced the rate of barium sulfate deposition.

A preliminary mineral-dressing study of five samples of East Texas limonitic brown iron ores was conducted as part of the Bureau of Mines program to develop and extend domestic resources of iron ore. The samples were considered to be typical of ore currently being mined and beneficiated by the Lone Star Steel Co. and Sheffield Steel Co. The objective of the research was to investigate those mineral-dressing unit operations that might recover some of the fine iron lost in current industrial wastes or perhaps improve the recoveries when applied to the ores as well. Since current industrial beneficiation practice yields a washed limonite analyzing 41 to 45 percent iron, higher grade concentrates were not sought in this laboratory study. Laboratory investigation included washing and sizing, reduction roasting, and subsequent magnetic separation of the finely ground roasted materials. The results showed that laboratory recoveries of over 80 percent of the iron were possible, for the ores investigated, at concentrate grades comparable to those expected from cur-rent industrial beneficiation practice. "Some basic features of the science and technology of particle systems are reviewed in the context of agglomeration processes. Emphasis is placed on the force of interaction among particles and with their environment and on their dependence on particle characteristics and interfacial phenomena. The complex role these forces play in the various stages of agglomerate formation, growth, consolidation and structure development, and their influence on final product properties is discussed.INTRODUCTION Agglomeration is an example of a process where the technology has generally preceded the science. Process development• has very often been by trial-and-error albeit with an eye on some basic principles. Nevertheless there is' a scientific basis to the process and a better understanding of the fundamentals can surely lead to improvements in process design and control.Successful processes for the agglomeration of fine particles depend on proper control of the adhesional forces between particles, to encourage agglomerate formation and growth and to provide adequate mechanical strength in the product. At the same time the rheology of the particulate system can be critical to the rearrangement of particles necessary to permit densification of the agglomerate and the development of an agglomerate structure appropriate to the end-use requirements.AGGLOMERATION SYSTEMSUltimately, the performance, of any agglomeration process depends on the• characteristics of the particles and their environment. The specific effects, however, are often complex and may be very difficult to pinpoint by simple observation of the process. A typical agglomeration process involves a number of concurrent or consecutive steps - adhesion, growth, compaction, etc., - each of which is affected by the characteristics of the system, but not necessarily in the same way. The effect of particle size, say on agglomerate growth may be quite different from its effect on compaction and its optimum value may differ widely from one stage to the other. Obviously there.is a general need for compromise in the design and operation, of agglomeration systems. Furtnermore, an understanding of the details of the process and their complexities can be critical to process optimization and improved product quality control."

Some months ago the Bureau of Mines began research of a fundamental character on sulphur in petroleum. In the course of this work, the usual qualitative test for sulphur in organic compounds1 was applied to certain oils that were believed to contain approximately 0.5 percent sulphur. No sulphur was found, and, as a check on the qualitative test, the oils were subjected to quantitative determination of this element by the oxygen-bomb method.2 The sulphur content of the oils ranged from 0.10 per cent to 0.50 per cent. This experience led to further trial of the qualitative test for organic sulphur, both on the oils mentioned above, and on common sulphur-containing organic substances. No difficulty was experienced in detecting the element in the latter, but with the petroleum oils the test, as usually performed, could not be relied upon to detect less than 0.60 per cent of sulphur consistently. The use of mechanically polished pure sheet copper for the detection of free sulphur, hydrogen sulphide, and perhaps other sulphur compounds has been recommended.3

"The investigation discussed in this paper was undertaken to obtain fundamental data on crushing and grinding and has been confined, so far, to work on quartz.The results of crushing or grinding have hitherto been judged entirely by the amount of the various-sized particles produced, based. on sieve sizing for particles above 74 microns in size and on microscopic measurement or elutriation for particles below 74 microns - a method which could give only a general idea of what had been accomplished.There was a distinct need of a ""yardstick"" for the measurement of crushed material. It appeared that no advance in the fundamental investigation of crushing and grinding could be made without a reliable method of surface measurement and that such a measurement would have to be based on some property of the surface of the crushed material.A number of attempts based on various surface actions, such as adsorption and heat of wetting, were made to measure surface on quartz particles, but all gave unsatisfactory results. After some preliminary work it was decided that a dissolution method based on Wenzel's law-- ""the reaction velocity between solids and liquids is proportional to the area. of contact""4 -- would be the most feasible.Early use of the dissolution method had been made for surface measurements5, and lately Dr. Geoffrey Martin and his coworkers in England used the dissolution method to determine surface on quartz. They compared the amount of quartz dissolved from a sample in one hour by a hydrofluoric acid solution, with the amountdissolved from a measured quartz cuboid6,After investigating the solvent power of sodium carbonate, sodium hydroxide, and hydrofluoric acid for quartz, hydrofluoric acid was selected as the most suitable solvent, and a dissolution method was developed which gives very reliable results.During the dissolution of quartz in hydrofluoric acid, the reaction velocity changes for two reasons: there is a change in concentration of solution, and a change of surface of the solid. The amount of quartz dissolved in a definite period of time is therefore not a true measure of surface. If, however, the reaction velocity or rate of dissolution for various periods of time be plotted, a curve will be obtained which, if extrapolated to the zero time ordinate, will give the rate of dissolution before any change of surface or any change in the solvent has taken place, and which is a true index of surface. This rate of dissolution, expressed in percentage of the original sample at the zero time ordinate, is designated herein as the ""Initial Rate"" or as simply ""I. R."""
