The Bureau of Mines investigated the Rip Van Winkle mine, which is about 25 miles northwest of Elko, Nev., from October 1942 to February 1943 to determine possible resources of lead-zinc-silver ore. The property is owned by the Rip Van Winkle Consolidated Mining Co., which maintains its offices in Salt Lake City, Utah. Ore was discovered in the 1860's, and active mining was carried out intermittently until 1939, when the Rip Van Winkle Consolidate Mining Co. acquired the property. This company equipped and developed the mine, erected a flotation mill, and operated on a 65-ton daily basis. The ore is mined from veins, mineralized faults, and replacement deposits of wall rock. The country rock comprises cherty shale, granite, porphyry, intrusive breccia, and breccia, and brecciated shale. Mining operations were carried down to the 700-foot level. The Bureau of Mines drilled 5 diamond-drill holes, totaling 1,084 feet, from the 600- and 700-foot levels, excavated a 250-foot surface trench, and took 26 underground samples. The ensuing sections note the location and physical features of the district, mention the equipment, and specify the property and ownership. The history of the mine is briefed, and the geology, mine workings, and plant are described. The work performed by the Bureau of Mines is summarized and supplemented in detail by assay maps, logs of diamond-drill holes in appendix A, and by tables of sample analysis in appendix B.

"INTRODUCTION This report is the second of a series of studies of analysis of energy requirements and characteristics of various machines used in the production of coal in underground mines and the losses in distribution of energy to these machines. The test equipment used in these studies is described in Report of Investigations 3615. 7/ The preliminary study data and results of tests made on various types of mechanical-leading cutting, and transporting equipment at two mines. This report is analysis of the energy requirements of the energy requirements of the underground equipment of a third mine. An analysis of the use of energy and its distribution usually requires in a saving in energy consumption and the reduction of hazards. The distribution system should be designed to supply energy effectively and study for the efficient operation of all machines."

The purpose of this report is to document the fire experiments conducted at the Waldo Mine, NM during March 1990. The U.S. Bureau of Mines is concerned with improving and validating the predictive capability of the mine ventilation and fire simulator, MFJRE. To accomplish this, fire experiments were conducted at the Waldo Mine and temperature profiles were developed as functions of time and distance from the fire. These tests then provided data for verifying the heat transfer model in the MFIRE mine ventilation and fire simulator. An initial analysis of this data indicates that it will serve this purpose well. This report summarizes the data obtained during six fire tests at the Waldo Mine.

A laboratory electrophoresis column was designed to separate pyrite from fine coal by utilizing an observed difference in the electrophoretic mobilities of the two materials in water. The apparatus worked well when tested with synthetic mixtures of coal and pyrite, but some modifications in design and procedure were necessary to provide a sharper separation. After these changes were made, the column was tested with a high-pyritic-sulfur raw coal sample. The column successfully fractionated the sample, removing not only the pyritic refuse, but a siliceous refuse as well. The invest ion demonstrated on a laboratory scale that pyrite and other impurities can be separated from fine coal by electrophoresis.

This circular is one of a series dealing with the exploration, equipping, and development of mining properties, prepared and published by the United States Bureau of Mines in cooperation with various mining and exploration companies in the United States and Canada. This series of papers will supplement an earlier one which covered the methods and costs of mining and milling at a large number of producing mines. The present paper describes the exploration, equipping, and developing of a group of 18 claims remote from rail transportation, and the transport of equipment and heavy supplies for a distance of 120 miles by tractor over ice and winter roads, and of men and lighter supplies by airplane.

Research was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of a well-point dewatering system in conjunction with a french drain to intercept waste impoundment leakage while reducing the volume of waste water requiring treatment. A well-point dewatering system composed of 585 production wells was installed around the perimeter of a leaking impoundment that previously used only a french-drain system for leakage control. The placement of the well-point system was designed to intercept and remove the leakage from the groundwater before the contaminant reached the french drain. Groundwater monitoring at this site revealed that after a period of approximately 40 days the well-point dewatering system had stabilized and effectively prevented the further spread of contamination to the french drain.

A cooperative project between the Bureau of Mines, Department of the Interior, and the Montana School of Mines, investigating results of hydraulic systems for transporting sand slurries for emplacement, was begun in August 1955. In such circumstances, the Bureau provides funds for a fellowship leading to a Master of Science degree as well as available instruments, tools, supplies and equipment. The School provides the ore-beneficiating laboratory with its equipment for use as a pilot plant. The success of a hydraulic backfilling method employing mill tailings depends largely upon the physical characteristics of the tailings. One of these characteristics is size distribution, especially in the finer size ranges. When being emplaced underground, almost impervious layers of slimes separate from some types of mill tailings containing a high percentage of slimes and settle on the top of the sand fill. These coatings may be so dense that the water in the slurry cannot percolate through them for proper drainage. Successive layers of fill in a stope, each with an impervious coating on top, sometimes build up a hydrostatic head, creating pressure on the bulkheads. This may cause breaks in the lining material, inducing sand runs and flooding the level and sumps below. Deleterious slimes flocculated and disseminated throughout the sands should help prevent the formation of impervious slime layers, increasing percolation and settling rates.

Ore-dressing tests were conducted on a sample of ore submitted by the Richmond Hill Mining Co. of Lead, S. Dak. as a part of the Bureau of Mines program for investigating potential domestic sources of manganese. Half of the sample was taken from the 300-foot level and half from surface cuts. The problems involved were liberation and rejection of silica and iron and removal of lead, Silver, and gold from the manganese concentrates. Although a portion of the silica and iron oxides was too intimately associated with manganese minerals for rejection by ore-dressing methods, thus limiting recovery of high-grade concentrates, the Richmond Hill ore was found amenable to simple gravity methods of concentration for producing intermediate-grade products. By jigging and tabling, 73.8 percent of the total manganese was recovered in a product that, when sintered, assayed plus 40 percent Mn. Lead, silver, and gold were successfully removed from gravity concentrates by a chloridizing roasting treatment.

USBM Contract H0133045 consists of the design, build and test of 50 waveform generators. The waveform generator is a small ULF transmitter operating in the 1 to 3 KHz frequency range for the purpose of locating trapped miners during a mine disaster. This contract provided for the design, test, and building of 50 waveform generators using a discrete component construction with an option of using hybrid construction techniques within 105 days after the effective date of the contract. Because of large quantity economic considerations, this option was not initiated. Two engineering models were designed, constructed and tested and 50 final production units were fabricated using discrete construction. Complete documentation is supplied under a separate package which includes final schematics, parts list, layout information, equipment specification, production test procedures and qualification test procedures. Ten units have been delivered to the USBM. The remaining 40 units are being retained for packaging under contract H0242010 Transmitter Package and Receivers. A great deal of experience has been gained as a result of this contract. A final discrete potted printed circuit configuration has been arrived at that is now ready for field testing. After field testing, any desired changes should be incorporated into a final design. However, as a result of the current experience gained building and testing the production units, this printed circuit package together with potting procedure could be improved to reduce future costs. For example, the printed circuit board could be increased in size by 0.125 to 0.2 inches and all components could be mounted directly to the board eliminating costly hand stacking of components. "The general location of the Kentucky, Fluorspar District and the Moore Hill fault area are shown in figure 1. An engineer3/ the Bureau of Mines visited the district in July 1942 and reported on the Moore Hill fault system. Subsequently the Bureau explored the Summers, Pepperbox, McCune, Eagle-Watson, Henry Watson, Davenport, Felix Tyner, and Eagle-Wring prop¬erties by core drilling. These properties and the principal faults are shown on figures 2 and 3.Collaboration of the Federal Geological Survey4/ was of great benefit, particularly in mapping the properties, determining the stratigraphy, and furnishing information on that and other geologic factors.Fluorite was noted as early as 1818 near Shawneetown in southern Illinois.5/ In 1835 an attempt was made to work deposit in Crittenden County, Kentucky, but interest centered chiefly upon the galena found with the fluorite. The first shipments of fluorspar from Kentucky wore made in 1373 from the Yandell mine of Crittendon County.6/ It is not known when the first work on the Moore Hill fault was done, but it seems probable that the Cullen-Eagle and Nancy Hanks were being ,worked in 1900. Gravel spar was found on the surface at the Two Brothers mine in 1904,7/ and the main shaft was started in 1914; work also began at .the Davenport in 1914, and in 1917 the Eagle-Watson was in production. A shaft was gunk on the Pepperbox in 1918, and in 1922 fluorspar was found and work was started on the Summers property. In 1924 work began at the McCune, Felix Tyner, Eagle-Wring, and probably the Hicks properties.No Good approximate record of production from each property on the Moore Hill fault system is obtainable, but an estimate based upon all data available is as follows:"

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a study to assess the impact of a directional water spray system on a unique single inlet dust scrubber on a low-profile mining machine. Tests were conducted in a full-scale model mine using a continuous mining machine. Tracer gas was introduced at the face and concentrations of the tracer gas were monitored at the face and in the return. Various parameters tested included mining position, depth of cut, brattice setback, and combinations of scrubber, and directional or symmetrical sprays. Results indicated that either water spray configuration improved the ventilation effectiveness of the scrubber by a factor of 2 to 3. Average face ventilation effectiveness (FVE) values for all testing of the scrubber and directional sprays were 0.95, versus 0.37 for a standard 20-ft blowing curtain without sprays. No FVE values were less than the standard 20-ft blowing results.

Data regarding the composition and physical properties of Florida land-pebble phosphate-waste slime are presented, and the feasibility of dewatering and beneficiating the slime by several different methods is discussed. Chemical analyses, electron micrographs, and X-ray diffraction data showed that principal constituents of the slime included quartz, attapulgite, and flaorapatite. Viscosity of the slime changed with pH; thixotropic, Newtonian, and rheopectic states were observed as the pH increased. Use of various flocculating agents was not effective in improving thickening properties of the slime. Dewatering tests using pressure filtration showed that temperature influenced the filtration rate more than pressure; the filtration rate at 165° C was tenfold that at room temperature. Selective flotation of the slime, using two different processes, gave promising results. About 25 pct of the phosphate was recovered in a concentrate assaying 31 pct P205, Other tests demonstrated that the slime could be successfully fractionated at 20-microns using a hydrocyclone. In hydrometallurgical tests about 80 pct of the phosphorus and alumina were chemically extracted from the slime using sulfuric acid. Limited bacteriological studies made of the slime showed that several types of microorganisms were present and grew in the material despite the presence of fluorine-bearing minerals.

No mineral resources were delineated during our investigation of the Antelope Wilderness Study Area (WSA). Only a few claims have been located in the area and only four workings were found. There has been, however, considerable exploration and mining activity in and near the south end of the study area. The Morey mining district, just southeast of the WSA, produced silver, and lesser amounts of gold and lead, sporadically from the mid-1860's through the mid-1960's. Long Lac Mineral Exploration (Texas), Inc. is actively exploring a large block of claims for hot-spring type, low-grade, large-tonnage gold deposits. Their claim block extends into the study area. The WSA, located midway between Tonopah and Eureka, encompasses approximately 87,400 acres. It is underlain by Tertiary rhyolitic and latitic volcanic rocks and by Paleozoic sedimentary rocks. At least three areas in the Paleozoic rocks have many of the favorable criterion for hot-spring type gold deposits; they have been faulted, silicified, brecciated, and hydrothermally altered, and have anomalous concentrations of precious metals and pathfinder elements. With additional exploration in the south part of the Antelope WSA, gold resources may be discovered.

The recommendations of the Bureau of Mines on rock dusting practices are embodied, except in a few details, in the Recommended American Practice for Rock-Dusting Coal Mines to Prevent Coal-Dust Explosions, approved by the American Engineering Standards Committee. December 30, 1925. It is specified that the dust to be used is of a elm that all will pass through a sieve having 20 meshes per linear inch and that 50 per cent or more will pass through a sieve having 200 meshes per linear inch. Thus the coarsest size of dust and the minimum proportion of fine dust are specified, but the specification does not indicate whether a larger proportion of fine dust would be desirable. There have been advocates of the use of that size of rock dust of which the particles would all approach 200-mesh in fineness. Explosion tests were made in the Experimental mine in the earlier period of testing which indicated that the finer rock dust is somewhat more effective under test conditions, but not sufficiently so to Justify the cost of finer grinding of the dust; also there are some disadvantages of finer dust described hereafter.

This report, dealing with the separation of coal from its associated impurities by means of a pulsater-type jig, continues the series of reports that have been issued by the Bureau of Mines, in which detailed study has been made of the efficiency and mechanism of separating coal and impurities in various coal-cleaning appliances. The previous reports have dealt with the piston jig, coal-washing table, pneumatic table, and Baum-type jig. Such studies of the separation accomplished by any form of concentration device are essential and necessarily preliminary to any intelligent attempt to improve the performance of such equipment Object and Plan The pulsator-type jig was developed recently by G. A. Vissac. Although two articles(2) describing plants using this typo of cleaning unit appeared in 1936, both dealt principally with plant design and layout rather than with plant performance The object of the stork described in this report was to determine the efficiency of the separation made by the pulsator jig on a sized feed, the specific gravity at which the separation between coal and impurity was effected, and the influence of the specific-gravity composition of the coal on the character of the separation made.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Pittsburgh Research Laboratory, has undertaken a study to determine how well self-contained self-rescuers (SCSRs), deployed in accordance with Federal regulations (30 CFR 75.1714), hold up in the underground environment with regard to both physical damage and aging. This report presents findings regarding laboratory-tested SCSRs in the sixth phase of testing from mid-1996 to early 1998. The SCSRs were tested on human subjects and on a breathing and metabolic simulator. These results indicate that most of the apparatus, if they pass their inspection criteria, perform satisfactorily. However, the deployed CSE SR-100s exhibited significantly higher inhaled CO2 levels than new units, as in the previous phase. This will cause higher ventilation rates in most users, which will, in turn, result in higher breathing pressures, possibly causing users to prematurely remove the apparatus. CSE Corp. has developed a noise test that can identify apparatus suffering from chemical-bed degradation causing the early CO2 breakthrough. This test was added to the inspection criteria for the SR-100. In addition, several of the MSA Portal-Packs that passed their inspection criteria were found to have KO2 dust in their mouthpieces. Further investigations by NIOSH and the Mine Safety and Health Administration confirmed these findings, which resulted in the decertification of the apparatus and their removal from service.

An active list of permissible explosives was published in December 1936 as part of Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 3324, under the title "Active List of Permissible Explosives and Blasting Devices Approved Prior to July 31, 1,936." This list included 170 brand names. Changes in the list that have been authorized to June 30, 1937 placed 35 additional brands of permissible explosives on the active permissible list as a result of tests, changes in brand names, or transfer from the inactive list. Ten permissible explosives were transferred from the active to the inactive list. The present list contains 196 brand names, one explosive having been placed on the list subsequent to June 30, 1937. A general description of investigative work conducted by the Bureau of Mines at the, Missouri Valley. manganese deposits and leading to tonnage and grade estimates has been given in Report of Investigations 4375, part 1 of a three-part report of work done between July 1945 and August 1947. Basic factual information from which tonnage and grade estimates were drawn was derived through the drilling sampling of 238 large-diameter bucket-drill holes in 11 widely separated areas. Drilling areas were selected after careful reconnaissance, mapping, and consideration of earlier work done on the deposits by the Bureau of Mines, State agencies, and private organizations and individuals. Stratigraphic studies permitted extending the results compiled within the drilling; areas to outcrop and lightly covered manganiferous zones between an beyond drilling areas. The locations of drilling areas, drilling sections, and individual drill hues are shown on illustrations in part 1 f this report. The individual drill holes, aside from providing the basic information for tonnage and grade estimates, disclosed features affecting any future plan As exploitation. It in particularly significant that a large part of the visible outcrops is faulted end otherwise complicated by slides that give a false impression of the thickness, vertical location, and even the existence of manganese-bearing zones.

Since 1922, when a brief report3 on the production and utilization of garnet was issued by the Bureau of Mines, there have been a number of interest—in developments in the technology of that mineral. Greater activity has been displayed in mining, new mills have been erected, and more attention has been paid to improvements in milling so that a more efficient and economical recovery of garnet has been possible. These activities have resulted in larger production; therefore, attempts are being made to broaden the market for garnet abrasives, and to find new uses for the unusual combination of physical properties than this mineral possesses. The writers have recently completed a field study of the occurrence, methods of mining and milling of garnet, and the manufacture and utilization of abrasive garnet products. This preliminary report indicates the most important sources of garnet, the methods by which it is recovered, and the manner in which it is recovered, and the manner in which it is utilized.Chemical and Physical Properties.The term ""garnet"" is applied to a closely related group of minerals which crystallize in the caste forms and possess similar physical properties, although their chemical composition may exhibit greater variation. The chemical composition of the garnet group may be represented by the general formula 3R"" O.R""' 203.3S102, in which R represents the bivalent elements calcium, magnesium, in the manganese state and ferrous iron, R"" represents the trivalent elements, ferric iron, aluminum and chromium in the chromie state. An account of the amorphous substitution of the different bivalent and trivalent elements, specimens whose composition may be represented by a definite formula are rare, the composition of any given specimen generally exhibits treat complexity.
