Reduce well construction and operation costs associated with in situ leach mining while increasing mineral recovery. Approach To accommodate the size of centrifugal pumps presently in use, in situ leaching production wells are typically drilled to 6 inches in diameter, while monitor wells are drilled to measure 4 inches in diameter. However, in order to reduce the cost of drilling these larger diameter wells and to increase recovery, the Bureau has developed jet pumps which have smaller diameters than centrifugal pumps of the same capacity. This allows both production and monitor wells to be drilled smaller. Bureau estimates indicate that the cost of drilling a 3-inch-diameter production well at in situ leaching operations would be about 35 percent less than the cost of a 6-inch well. Similarly, the cost of drilling a 2-inch-diameter monitor well would be about 26 percent less than the cost of a 4-inch well. Such significant savings in the cost of drilling these wells would effect a substantial reduction in total capital cost. Use of the new jet pumps can also increase the percentage of recovery because less costly wells allow closer well spacings, improving the distribution of the leach solution. How the System Works After the borehole is cased, the new small-diameter jet pump, along with piping and accessories, is installed and connected to a centrifugal pumping unit on the surface. High-pressure water from the surface pump is forced through a nozzle into the venturi of the jet type pump injector. This jet action lifts the leach and mineral-bearing solution to the surface.

The authors hypothesize that excavation-induced extension fractures are caused by elastic shearing displacement that in turn causes tension oblique to a propagating shear zone. Such extension is manifested as tension on scales larger than that of microcracks. En echelon fracture patterns are a common result. FLAC modeling confirmed that localized tension is created near the corners of mine openings. In the model, tension was concentrated at the leading edge of a simulated fracture in a pattern that could promote the formation of an en echelon fracture. Particle Flow Code models confirm progressive formation of en echelon tensile failures with distance from an opening. The elastic displacements and the resulting fractures facilitate reduction in applied load at the expense of shear deformation and lateral dilation. Understanding the mechanics of fracture and deformation is vital for designing more effective ground support practices, a major objective of ground control research being conducted at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.

Reports received by the Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce, from State mine inspectors, for November, 1930, showed that 219 men were killed in the coal mines of the United States during the month, an increase of 25 over the previous month and 33 over November, 1929. On the other hand the production of coal decreased, the output of 43,329,000 tons in November being 8,397,000 tons less than in October and 9,005,000 tone less than in November a year ago. The larger number of fatalities accompanied by a smaller output of coal resulted in a higher death rate4 per million tons in November than in the same month last year or in October, 1930. The November rate was 5.05, as compared with 3.55 for November, 1929 and 3.75 for October, 1930. The increase in the rate for the industry as a whole was chargeable entirely to bituminous mines, as the anthracite mines had fewer fatalities in November than in either of the previous months to which reference has been made. Reports for bituminous mines alone showed that accidents at this class of mines resulted in a death rate of 5.12, based on 195 fatalities and a production of 38,122,000 tons. This rate indicated an increase of 55 per cent over the rate for October, of the same year, and 72 per cent over the rate for November, 1929. The October record was 146 fatalities and 44,150,000 tons, and that for November a year ago was 138 deaths and a production of 46,514,000 tons.

This document reports the results of a two-year research effort aimed at improving communication systems used in coal mines. This work was conducted under a program whose original goal not only involved the development of practical and effective electronic systems for operational communications, but also for monitoring, at a central location, remote instruments at key positions in a mine. About half way through the originally proposed three year effort, the program was redirected to phase out the communication effort at the end of two years and to concentrate the program" resources on the investigation of new monitoring system concepts developed by this research. Thus, the work reported here is incomplete relative to the originally pro- posed program. However, the work was carried to the point of providing sufficient evidence to aid in the comparison of certain new communication concepts. For the concepts chosen for this study, the work was stopped short of hardware development and field testing, Several reports in the form of Master's theses and a Doctoral Dissertation have resulted from this research. They each report in considerable detail the results of several individual" contributions to this program. In preparing this report, an attempt has been made to provide a complete description of the significant results but with- out burdening the reader with the minute details. These more detailed reports are referenced heavily for the convenience of those interested. PRESENT COMMUNICATION METHODS Two types of communication systems are presently used In coal mines. They are: 1, Various forms of telephone systems, and 2. Carrier current radio systems using the trolley line as the interconnection circuit. Carrier current radio is used almost exclusively for control of rail trafflc by the dispatcher. Almost all other communication uses the telephone system, Telephone lines generally extend to areas where trolley lines are not present such as the outside offices and warehouse. Therefore the telephone system provides the primary means of voice communication. Telephones - Telephone systems employed in American coal mines fall into three categories. 1. In conjunction with the Geological Survey, the Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral investigation in 1981 and 1982 of the Santa Rosa Mountains Wilderness Study Area (WSA), Riverside County, California. The Bureau of Mines is responsible for the mineral survey of mines, prospects, and mineralized areas in and near the WSA. A literature search was completed to obtain information concerning mineral occurrences and mining activity that relate to the WSA. A field investigation inside, and up to 1 mi outside, the boundary of the WSA, disclosed one prospect. This prospect was surveyed by compass and tape, and five samples were taken to determine the representative mineral content. No attempt was made to expose concealed mineralization or to re-open caved workings. All five samples were analyzed by fire assay for gold and silver and by colorimetric methods for tungsten. Two of the samples were analyzed by semi quantitative spectrographic methods to determine if any unsuspected elements were present. All analyses are furnished in this report except for the semi-quantitative spectrograhic analyses. Complete sample analyses are available for public inspection at the Bureau of Mines, Intermountain Field Operations Center, Building 20, Denver Federal Center, Denver, CO 80225.

Diamond-bit performance and cost data accumulated in core-drilling sandstones reveal significant trends of economic interest. Large-size, AA-Grade drill bort suffered less diamond loss per foot drilled than any other size or grade of diamonds assessed. Detailed analyses of the factors that affect diamond-bit performances -diamond size, diamond quality, bit size, bit type, percentage of core recovered, and physical characteristics of bit matrices -are assessed in the tables, graphs, and discussion. INTRODUCTION Since 1945 the Bureau of Mines has been compiling detailed performance records on diamond bits used in core drilling throughout the United States and Alaska. Analytical reports covering bit performance in various rocks are issued as in-formation on a significant number of bits used in anyone type of rock is accumulated. The first three such reports analyzed bit performance in gneiss,2/ schist,3/ and lime-stone and dolomite.4/ This report evaluates diamond-bit performance in sandstone. Data obtained from 627 bits, which drilled 42,665 feet on 45 different projects, are presented. The geographical distribution of the projects is shown in figure 1.

An evaluation of diamond-bit performance data accumulated from core drilling in quartzite shows that core recovery and physical characteristics of drill bits and diamonds have economic significance. Relatively inexpensive, low-quality, small Congo diamonds will perform as well as, or better than, other diamonds used as drill bart. M-type bits set with oriented Congo diamonds provide those engaged in core drilling with near optimum combination. Various factors that affect bit performance, including size of diamonds, size and type of bits, grade or quality of diamonds, and percentage of core recovered, are evaluated by means of tables, charts, and discussion.

"In a 1985 seminar, we were told that over-optimism abounds in Artificial Intelligence (AI), that AI is neither a science nor a technology yet, and that we will be both exhilarated and disappointed with AI. In fact, even today, there is no single accepted definition of AI; however, certain features have been identified by AI researchers as essential to consider an entity (e.g. machine or program) to be intelligent. According .to Shank (1987), these features include communication (to be able to communicate with), internal knowledge (knowledge about itself), world knowledge (awareness and knowledge about the world outside), intentionality (knowing what one wants and a plan to seek it, ie. goal seeking behavior), and creativity (being adaptable to changing conditions). None of these figures would individually define intelligence; however, each would be a part of intelligence in its own way.The prospects for the development of entities with AI have never been as good as they are now. The combination of advancements in computer hardware and .software along with new insights into the ways in· which we store knowledge and use it for problem solving has enhanced the potential for the creation ~f intelligent entities. After some unbounded optimism of a major breakthrough in the fifties and frustrating disappointments in the two following decades, it appears now that AI has emerged from research labs to industrial practice. This is confirmed by the growing number of repeat applications of AI in business and industry to the extent that AI can now be considered a technology.AI applications are categorized into several distinct areas such as Natural Language Processing, Speech Recognition and Synthesis, Expert Systems, Robotics, Machine Vision, etc. Of these practical realizations, Expert Systems (ES) has the greatest potential for meeting the decision-making needs of the manager in the ever-growing complex scoio-technical systems. Prof. Feigenbaum, an expert and leader on expert systems, has defined Expert System as"" ... an intelligent computer program that uses knowledge and inference procedures to solve problems that are difficult enough to require significant human expertise for their solution. Knowledge necessary to perform at such a level, plus the inference procedures used, can be thought of as a model of the expertise of the best practitioners of the field."""

One of a series published by the Bureau of Mines covering research investigations in rock drillability, this report of field drilling results extends earlier laboratory findings and provides a relatively simple procedure for predicting percussive drilling rates with reasonable accuracy. Two percussive drills mounted on a truck were used to drill a total of 25 rock types, and the results were used to develop a prediction equation. The equation was tested on a set of unrelated laboratory percussive drilling data, and the comparison between predicted and actual rates is shown in tabular form.

Almost every process has a predecessor, and studying the predecessor helps to define needs and shortcomings to be addressed in the new design. It also suggests what information is needed by the users in order for them to be able to operate safely and effectively. The end users of a system can provide important feedback to better evaluate the current and proposed designs. When new technology is introduced into a system, mishaps may occur before it is realized that human-system interactions were not considered adequately in the design process. A systematic methodology to evaluate the causes of these injuries and to develop remedial recommendations can enhance safety. This paper illustrates how such an approach was used to assess remote machine operation in underground coal mines. The dynamic work environment of underground mining with its unpredictable geologic anomalies can result in numerous hazards. Many of these hazards, including mine roof collapse, occur near the working face where coal is being extracted. The face area is also where the most intricate interactions of people and equipment occur. For these reasons, a high priority has been placed upon minimizing hazards to the workers at the face. A remote control operation was introduced to provide a safer working distance from these hazards. As the remote control technology began to be widely used for extended cut mining operations, new issues became evident. It was essential to develop mechanisms for mines to evaluate these issues in order to predict and reduce injuries. Mining methods and equipment changes must allow for the ability of workers to adapt to changes in their dynamic mining environment. Consideration should be given to how the worker will use familiar information to make decisions in now unfamiliar situations. There will be both intended and unintended consequences [Merton, 1949]. Designers try to anticipate and eliminate surprises, but it is impossible to eliminate them all. How, then, will the new system affect the tasks to workers which are currently accustomed? As suggested below, this question may be addressed and more of the unintended outcomes predicted with a planned design process which includes strong human factors input to determine interactions and behaviors of participants.

After becoming an oil exporter in 1972, Ecuador experienced a remarkable economic upswing until 1978. However, in 1979 and 1980, a combination of only slight improvements in agricultural output and stagnating petroleum output lowered rates of real gross domestic product (GDP) expansion to 5.3% and 4.3%, respectively. In current prices, the GDP in 1980 was estimated at $11.3 billion.2 The slowdown in growth is attributable in large part to the low level of petroleum exploration in the 1972-79 period. Ecuador's production of petroleum declined 4.5% in 1980 compared with that of 1979. The consortium of Corporación Eatetal Petrolera Ecuatoriana (CEPS), the State oil company, and Texaco, Inc., operating in Ecuador's eastern jungle region was responsible for nearly all of 1980 production, The volume of total crude petroleum exports from Ecuador dropped from 44.7 million barrels in 1979 to 40 million barrels in 1980, although crude petroleum export revenues rose from $1,032 million in 1979 to $1,294 million in 1980- The latter figure represented 54% of Ecuador's 1980 merchandise exports. Crude oil exports accounted far about 46% of the value of 1979 merchandise exports. The total nonfuel mineral exports in 1980 were valued at less than $1 million.

The objective of this condensed handbook is to provide the inspector with guidance for recognizing hazards from inhalation contaminants in above ground work areas of underground and surface coal mining and processing facilities and evaluating these hazards by collecting samples or making field determinations and interpreting the analytical results. It will be carried with the inspectors during their surveys. The complete handbook should be left in their offices except for Appendix II which lists the compositions of products found in previous surveys. There are several portions of the condensed handbook which should prove most useful to the inspectors. This report investigates the mechanical behavior of fine soils in a lunar environment in engineering gravity-flow bins. The ultrahigh vacuum, absence of moisture, and a lunar gravity one-sixth that of earth gravity represents a unique environment, both advantageous and detrimental to these systems. On earth, moisture and gases contained in powder masses can be responsible for complex descriptions of gravity flow. Their absence appear to simplify the lunar soil behavior. However, simulation of the lunar gravity and vacuum complicates the development of experimental data for designing bins. The properties of a dry soil powder, its behavior under one-dimensional compression, and its torsional and direct shearing strength under earth atmosphere are described in part 1 of this paper. These properties provide the parameters for a finite-element analysis to optimize the design of bins, to be described by Dr. William Pariseau in part 2. Shear tests assess the failure criteria for the material. Compression tests provide modulus and (Ko) stress-ratio values from the loading portion of the compression cycle, duplicating the condition of a bin at rest with the discharge closed. During the unloading portion of the compression cycle (soil overconsolidated), the residual Ko values rise. It is postulated that this phenomenon creates a high-lateral stress in bins when they approach incipient flow. Assessment of the Ko value, overconsolidation ratio, and the void ratio state is proposed as a criterion to determine the flowability of powder.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines assessed mineral resources of the BLM Malheur-Jordan Resource Areas (MJRAs) in southeastern Oregon in 1993 and 1994. The study relied heavily on acquiring and analyzing existing data. In order to efficiently handle and analyze a large quantity of data, a minerals information management program, informally called MINFO, was developed as a frontend for three databases created to store basic information gathered during the minerals resource assessment. The MINFO program will also provide the BLM with a method of tracking and updating minerals information in the future because program modules in MINFO allow the addition of new data and the correction of errors, creation of print files, transfer of data to other database formats, exportation of data to other software packages, and creation of AutoCAD script files to be used in conjunction with AutoCAD to produce maps. The report specifically identifies significant past and present mineral exploration and development activities and possible areas of future mineral exploration and development. These areas are informally designated as areas of development interest or ADIs. The report contains a scenario of what mineral development might reasonably occur in the foreseeable future if the BLM does not substantially change its present resource management plan, and it shows the possible socioeconomic impacts of that development. The uncertainty of the political and economic situation makes it extremely challenging for the USBM to accurately predict a reasonably foreseeable development scenario. The reasonably foreseeable development (RFD) scenario developed by the USBM for the BLM indicates short-term RFD of minerals should have a negligible socioeconomic impact, and longer-term RFD of minerals should have a slight socioeconomic impact on the MJRAs. The mining industry is facing a rapidly changing business and regulatory environment in Oregon. Several signal changes have occurred recently, including State regulations that require significant bonding prior to the startup of "chemical process" mining, an initiative by a special interest group to stop all chemical process gold mining within the State, and an opinion by the Oregon Attorney General (AG) banning all forms of placer mining without exemption. In the AG opinion, not even gold panning is allowed, and the prohibition applies to mining claims on Federal lands. The State legislature may amend the statute to allow small scale placer mining to occur, as was allowed under an AG opinion issued in 1982. These and other changes occurring at the local, State, and National levels are making it more challenging for the mining industry to operate in the United States. Several epithermal gold properties in the MJRAs attracted the mining industry's interest. Only the Grassy Mountain Project of Newmont Grassy Mountain Corporation may be developed in the next few years. It is probable that at least two other properties will be developed if Grassy Mountain is successful. Mining companies are waiting to see the effect recently promulgated State mining regulations and more stringent proposed regulations, particularly bonding regulations, may have on Grassy Mountain. Resources of bentonite, diatomite, and zeolite are abundant. The almost Ubiquitous stone, sand and gravel, and semiprecious gemstone resources also were examined. Little environmental or socioeconomic impact is expected from reasonably foreseeable development of these mineral resources.

This report presents statistical data on individual plants in the fuel- briquet and packaged-fuel industries circularized by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, in its 1957 annual survey. This survey revealed that 17 briquet and 23 packaged-fuel plants were active part or throughout the year. The annual production capacity of the fuel-briquet industry was 3,088,000 net tons, a decrease of 17 percent from 1956. The decline in capacity was caused in part by the permanent retirement of 4 plants and also by the reduction in capacities of 4 other plants. The rate of production of briquet plants also decreased as the industry operated at 35.8 percent of capacity compared with 40.9 percent in 1956. Every operating plant in 1957 had an annual capacity exceeding 25,000 tons.

"INTRODUCTION A report of tests of seven small pillars formed from the Pittsburgh coal bed in the Experimental coal mine was given in Technical Paper 605 5/ Five additional pillars were tested between July 1939 and. October 1940. The data obtained, in the later tests permit an extension of the conclusions reached in Technical Paper 605, which appears to be important enough to the mining industry to justify a progress report that will explain briefly what it is and how it was obtained. Full detail of the tests will appear in a second technical paper, preparation of which is deferred so that results of pillar tests now under way my be included.DESCRIPTION OF TESTSExcept for minor improvements in operating details, the five additional tests were made as described in Technical Paper 605, pages 2 to 7. Briefly, the desired pillar was formed from the coal bed, by excavating a passage around it (no explosives were used), and enough material was removed from above to permit installation of the assembly used for applying pressure. Each pillar was tested resting on its original fireclay floor, which was restrained from lateral flow by a ring of concrete. Vertical and lateral movement of the pillars in two directions as measured carefully in all tests."

This study was planned to present salient facts of the California and Nevada sulfur industries and to indicate existing opportunities for increased economic utilization of California and Nevada sulfur resources. Numerous publications on sulfur have been issued by the Federal Bureau of Mines, including Information Circular 6329, Sulfur, by Robert H. Ridgway (1930); annual Minerals Yearbook chapters on Sulfur and Pyrites, by various authors; and a chapter on Sulfur by G. W. Josephson in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 556, Mineral Pacts and Problems (1956). This literature, however, deals primarily with the national and international sulfur situation and does not attempt to analyze the possibilities for increased economic development of sulfur resources by individual States. The present study attempts to analyze these possibilities in California and Nevada and to (1) evaluate factors that have influenced production and consumption in California and Nevada and (2) indicate apparent trends in production, consumption, and prices in these States.

Prediction models were constructed for seam elevation, overburden, and sodium concentration for a lignite deposit in Ward County; N. Dak. These models were developed by mathematical-statistical techniques using surface coordinates as independent variables to permit interpolation between drill holes. The results suggest that sodium concentration in lignite may be predicted in advance of mining. This information is helpful to mine planning, specifically, in scheduling production to deliver a uniform product to existing powerplants.
