Owing to an upsurge in export earnings. Cameroon made substantial economic Progress in 1978 and 1979. With a real growth estimated at 6%, the gross domestic product (GDP) for 1979 surpassed $5 billion.2 Crude petroleum production was providing a new potential in 1978 and 1979 for achieving national self-sufficiency. Among other benefits, crude petroleum exports were helping to offset the escalating costs of refined petroleum imports and to reduce the 14% to 17% annual rate of inflation. Over the 4 years prior to 1978, Cameroon's petroleum imports increased by 12.1% in volume annually, while the import cost increased by 24.5% annually to about $105 million. Total export earnings for 1978 were $805 million,3 to which crude petroleum contributed $25.3 million and crude aluminum product exports contributed $25.9 million. Petroleum exports had increased to about $240 million in 1979 and were in third place after coffee and cacao. Total imports for 1978 were valued at nearly $1 billion. The volume of petroleum imports decreased in 1979 to 552,000 tons, compared with 622,000 tons in 1978. The European Economic Community (EEC) countries purchased over 75% of total Cameroonian exports and provided most of the Nation's imports. The United States purchased $12.4 million in petroleum exports from Cameroon in 1978. Although coal is found in several locations in Virginia, almost all recent mining has occurred in the southwestern part of the state. Potentially minable reserves are estimated at 2.6 billion tons, slightly less than one percent of the national total. Coal ranges from high- to low-volatile bituminous, and seams average three to four feet in thickness. Virginia produces coal with higher BTUs (British Thermal Units) and a lower sulfur content than the national average. Historically its high quality has made Virginia coal attractive for metallurgical coke production and for the export market. Coal production and related industries have a significant economic impact in southwestern Virginia. In the seven coal- producing counties, coal mining is the major industry. In the two largest coal-producing counties (Buchanan and Wise), over 40 percent of total earning is derived from the coal industry. Virginia's regulatory program was conditionally approved December 15,198 1, and received final approval May 8, 1984. Its Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved with the regulatory program December 15, 1981, with emergency program authority approved November 13,1987.

This Bureau of Mines report describes methods to electrodeposit erosion-resistant titanium diboride coatings from molten alkali metal borate baths at 900° C. These coatings have been shown to be highly resistant to material loss during impingement with high-velocity alumina and silicon carbide powders, and they show promise as protective coatings to reduce metal loss in erosive chemical environments, such as coal gasification systems. The most erosion-resistant coatings were prepared on nickel, Inconel, and molybdenum from an electrolyte containing LiBO2, NaBO2, Na2Ti03, and TiO2. The best coatings were deposited at current densities of [~]20 ma/cm2, using titanium or titanium diboride anodes. Erosion-resistant coatings were shown to exhibit (1) a high degree of crystallographic orientation along the (100) or (110) planes, (2) a chromium impurity level of less than 3 pct, and (3) a uniform, smooth, consolidated surface appearance when viewed under a microscope or by scanning electron microscopy. Optical spectroscopic studies of the molten electrolyte suggest that the lower valent (+3) titanium ion predominates in the baths.

We have tested the ability of ground penetrating radar (GPR) to resolve adjacent mine workings. The work was conducted at two National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health locations – an underground coal mine and an underground limestone mine. The objective of our work was to determine if GPR signals could be received from distant mine workings. The GPR system was calibrated on underground mine pillars of known dimensions using a variety of antennas. The system was then tested at several underground locations in an effort to detect an adjacent drift entry; and an adjacent abandoned coal mine. As a means of verification, an in-seam horizontal hole was drilled from the active coal mine to the abandoned mine to confirm the presence and location of the abandoned mine workings. Our results show that in the case of the limestone mine the maximum depth of penetration where the mine workings could be resolved was 85 ft; and in the case of the coal mine the abandoned mine workings could be resolved at a depth of 205 ft. We conclude that it may be possible to utilize GPR for initial underground mine studies followed by directional drilling to accurately delineate the extent and position of adjacent abandoned mine workings.

In a Bureau of Mines study, unsteady, spherically symmetric, one-dimensional, compressible-flow (finite sound speed) equations were solved numerically for a spherical deflagration propagating concentrically in a spherical vessel with Mach numbers ranging from 0.2 to 0.7; trajectory histories agree with the infinite-sound-speed theory developed by Perlee, Fuller, and Saul (PFS). A preliminary result of this study shows that flames propagating with speeds greater than 20 pct the speed of sound in the unburned gas mixture generate a complex history of aerodynamic waves distributed throughout the spherical vessel. Although the average pressure and flame radius agree with those predicted by the PFS models, the aerodynamic waves have a pronounced effect on the flame velocity, differing appreciably from that predicted by the PFS model.

IN 1944 the Congress passed the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act that authorized the Secretary of the Interior, acting through the Federal Bureau of Mines, to conduct basic research and construct and operate demonstration plants to produce synthetic liquid fuels from coal, oil shale, and other substances. As a basis for the oil shale investigations to be undertaken in this country, the progress of foreign countries in developing and using oil shale as a source of liquid fuels was studied by the technical missions of the Federal Bureau of Mines. Oil shale mines, retorting plants, and refineries were visited; geological information on the nature and occurrence of the foreign oil shales was obtained; and samples of the oil shales were collected where possible. Samples collected by these missions or acquired by other means came from Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Manchuria (China) , New Zealand, Scot-land, Spain, Sweden, Thailand, and Union of South Africa. These countries represent a large part of the locations where oil shale developments have taken place. The major omissions are the Estonian, German, and Russian developments.

"A copper-palladium-gold-silver ore is being mined at Salt Chuck, Prince of Wales Island, Alaska, from which a concentrate is produced that contains 40 to 50 per cent copper, and considerable amounts of palladium, gold and silver. There has been much difficulty in obtaining assays for palladium, gold and silver from the mine, smelter, sampler, and umpire that check within reasonable limits. While the results for copper content have not been unusual, the results for palladium have varied as much as 0c8 oz. on 3 oz. material, results for gold differed by 0.1 oz. on 1.6 oz. materials, and for a silver content of 7 oz., results differed by as much as 4.0 oz.The Bureau of Mines was requested to determine the causes of variation in the results of the different assayers, and to develop a satisfactory procedure for analyzing such ore.Three samples of concentrate were received for analysis, two small lots that had previously been assayed by the various laboratories, and one large sample. The large sample was dried and ground in a ball mill, put through a 150-mesh screen, and then returned to the ball mill for thorough mixing. The small samples were ground to pass a 150-mesh screen and then mixed on a mixing wheel.The large sample (No. 1) was analyzed by five different procedures, one of the small samples (No.2) by three procedures, and the other (No. 3) by two procedures (the two small samples being too small for further tests). The different procedures tried and the results obtained arc presented below. The samples of concentrate were from ore mimed and milled by the Alaska palladium Co. at Salt Chuck."

The Other South Pacific Island states extend from Palau, also called Belau, near the Philippines in the west, to French Polynesia in the east. However, a number of countries and territories have been omitted, from this chapter because their mineral production was insignificant to the local economy. These include the French over-seas territories of French Polynesia and Wallis and Futuna Islands; independent states, including Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Palau, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu; the New Zealand freely associated state of the Cook Islands, and the New Zealand dependency of Niue. What mineral production existed in these islands was limited to construction materials such as coral reef limestone, crushed stone, and sand and gravel in minor quantities solely for domestic consumption. FIJI The mineral industry of Fiji continued to be dominated by gold, although this sector contributed less than 1 % to the gross domestic product (GDP) of the country. Gold and silver together ranked second in value among the country's exports. Fiji's economy contracted 11% during the 8-month period following the first, on May 14, of two military coups. Although the island nation had been a member of the British Commonwealth of Nations since its independence on October 10, 1970, Fiji's membership terminated with the emergence of the Republic or Fiji on October 15.

The Bureau of Mines has conducted desorption work on fine coal particles at near atmospheric pressure. An apparatus Iris been developed that uses a capacitance manometer to measure desorption of methane from coal particles up to, 2 inches in diameter and pressures up to 1,000 psi. This will make it possible to duplicate the desorption process as it occurs in its natural underground environment.

A general analytical solution of the effect of an inclined contact separating two media of differing electrical properties on a normally incident plane electromagnetic field has been given (Geyer, 1972). These solutions for the electromagnetic response at any observation point P(r, [u]) are given in the form of inverse Lebedev-Kontorovich transforms. Two modes of excitation are considered: (1) case where current density flows across strike of the contact separating the media of differing electrical properties (only Er , E [u] , and Hx differ from zero) and (2) case where current density flows along-strike (only Hr , H [u] , and Ex differ from zero). The electromagnetic fields in the frequency range of interest and for the rock conductivities under consideration are quasi-static in nature so that to a first-order approximation the horizontal magnetic field at the surface of the earth is constant and continuous across the discrete discontinuity in resistivity for case (1) above, and so that the tangential derivative of the horizontal electric field at the surface of the earth is constant and continuous across the discrete discontinuity for case (2) above. Of course, it is well known that where large horizontal gradients in conductivity exist, there also exists large anomalous components of the vertical magnetic field (Weaver, 1963). The recognition of such anomalous components and their magnitudes due to the presence of lateral resistivity changes in the overburden becomes very important in any wavetilt type measurement which may be used to locate a miner. When the lateral change in resistivity becomes quite large, the integral solutions (expressed as Lebedev-Kontorovich transforms) simplify considerably and allow ready numerical evaluation. Examples of the amplitude and phase responses of the radial electric, horizontal electric, and vertical magnetic field in the vicinity of the contrast in resistivity are shown in Figures 2, 3, and 4. Of particular significance is the fact that the anomalous vertical magnetic field is three orders of magnitude larger near the contact than far from the contact. This fact implies that where large resistivity contrasts do occur in the rocks overlying mine workings, that significant errors may be present in wavetilt measurements as used above for location criteria! Another observation insofar as the anomalous vertical magnetic field is concerned is the linear variation of phase as one proceeds away from strike in induction number (increased distance or frequency). For a pulse-excited communications system this phenomena would have a bearing on where the zero crossings would occur (i.e., 'pulse breadth') in the transient coupling between any given source-receiver configuration and at any given receiver site.

The first well that produced commercial quantities of oil in the Cook Inlet Basin of Alaska was completed in 1957. Since that time oil production in the basin has increased rapidly and by the end of 1969 had reached an annual rate of 74 million barrels. Five major oilfields had been developed, and two additional discoveries awaited development. Estimated amounts of recoverable oil by primary and secondary recovery methods total 2.7 billion barrels, or 36 percent of the estimated oil originally in place. Repressurization by injecting gas or water in formations containing undersaturated oil has significantly increased the volume of recoverable oil. All production has been from formations of the Tertiary age; that much of it is from depths of 10,000 feet or more is unusual for Tertiary formations. The oils are low in sulfur and contain low to moderate amounts of asphalt.

Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are investigating the causes and mechanisms of roof failure in underground mines. It is expected that a better understanding of these causes and mechanisms will lead to better layout and support designs that will help prevent accidents and fatalities associated with fall of ground. Two numerical experiments were conducted by NIOSH researchers using the Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua (FLAC) computer modeling program with a strain-softening continuum to simulate fracture zones. Two models, one of a round hole in a plate and one of a rectangular opening, were constructed and boundary conditions were applied to simulate far-field shear. The Particle Flow Code in Two Dimensions (PFC2D) computer program was used to look at the effects of far-field shear in generating fractures around an underground opening, but these models are preliminary until boundary conditions, strengths, and stiffnesses are matched to the FLAC models. Results showed that shear zones propagated from the opposite corners of openings in directions that appeared to be determined by opening shape and far-field stress. Tensile failures also formed and extended away from these shear zones. The consistent direction of shear deformation with respect to far-field shear provides a plausible explanation for preferred directions of shear as seen in geologic environments.

The attention of operators of oil-producing properties long has been directed toward methods of' disposing of petroleum wastes as well as the disposal of oil-field brines. The problem of disposing of' petroleum wastes is not easy to solve, and although many operators are to be commended for the efforts they have made, much work remains to be done before the problem can be considered solved. Petroleum wastes include emulsions of petroleum and brine or mixtures of petroleum and sand that cannot be "broken down" or treated economically by known methods of separating petroleum from deleterious matter; crude petroleum that escapes from pipe lines, fittings, and tanks because of holes in the lines, leaky connections, or some accident; and oil-saturated materials that accumulate accidentally or otherwise an the normal operation of an oil-producing property.

The value of mineral production increased 6.2% in 1976. With the exception of coal, practically all commodities registered an increase in production and value; most had an increase in unit value. Total value exceeded $1 billion for the first time. The increase in nearly all nonmetallic mineral production was a complete reversal of the 1975 experience. Alabama led the Nation in the production of crushed marble and was second in bauxite and scrap mica, third in oystershell, third in kaolin, and fifth in dimension limes-tone and dimension marble. International Trade.-The international trade passing through the Mobile customs district was valued at $2,524 minion in fiscal year 1976, up 20% from that of the previous year. Of the total value of trade passing through the district, 52% of the value of experts and 89% of the value of imports were handled through the port at Mobile. The major export Commodity was coal through McDuffie Coal Terminal which amounted to nearly 2.9 million tons, up from 2.4 million tons in 1975. To determine the relative permeability of the soil a series of percolation tests were performed at the three locations of interest at Lanse, i.e., 3C, 03A and strip bank, and KA and KB at Kato. Soil cores were removed to 2, 8, 16, 24 and 32 inch depths with the thin wall sampler tube, each core separated from the next by about fifteen feet. Then two-foot-long thin-wall tubes were inserted into the 2, 8, and 16 inch deep holes and three-foot long tubes were inserted into the 24 and 36 inch deep holes. Each tube was tamped down about one inch further to assure a bottom seal; the tubes were filled with water and the rate of fall was measured. The test is similar to those done for septic tank percolation studies 6; but is not quantitatively related to Darcy's coefficient of hydraulic conductivity because the water can flow in three dimensions from the bottom of the tube. The measurements are dependent on the length of test, since the rate of fall is a function of the head. Therefore, it should be noted that the 24 and 32 inch deep tubes should give faster percolation rates because of the one foot greater head. At locations 03A and 3C the data show a sharp decrease in percolation at increasing depth, Table XV. However, the percolation at 03A and 32 inch depth is much higher than at 3C (0.2 vs. 0.01 inches/hour); the fragipan layer must be deeper at the 3C location since this area does experience a perched water table. On the strip bank the rates of falling head are randomly variable, appearing to be as much dependent on the particular location of insertion as on depth of placement. For example, water drained from the 16 inch tube as fast as it was added, probably into a sub-surface cavity or crevice. At Kato the tubes were more difficult to place because of interference of tree roots. For this reason 2 inch deep tubes were not inserted. These short tests at Kato were inconclusive, varying extensively when the tubes were moved. Field permeability tests were also performed in two (previously described) eight-inch diameter permeater tubes at Lanse and one at Kato. Because the soil is confined inside the tube, hydraulic conductivity can be calculated according to Darcy's flow equation. The high values reported in Table XVI experienced when the tubes were rewetted from a dry surface condition, enable us to conclude that infiltration is faster than the saturated permeability of the soil. In contrast to the falling head percolation tests, these permeability results do not show a high variation between locations.

Enthalpy increments above 298 K were determined by the Bureau of Mines for magnesium hydroxide (brucite) between 298 and 900 K by the method of drop calorimetry. Enthalpy and entropy increments from this investigation were combined with other data from the literature to calculate absolute entropies, free energy functions, enthalpies of formation, Gibbs energies of formation, and equilibrium constants of formation from 298 to 900 K. By the use of published PVT data for water, a table of Gibbs energy change was given for the reaction MgO (periclase) + H2O = Mg(OH)2 (brucite) as a function of temperature and pressure.

Mine fires can be especially perilous because toxic products can quickly spread well beyond the fire zone thereby exposing all underground miners to dangerous and deadly conditions. Since November 1998, there have been six major underground coal mine fires or explosions in the United States (Willow Creek (twice), Sanborn Creek, Loveridge No. 22, West Elk and the Jim Walter Resources No. 5 Mine). In each case, the entire mine or specific areas of the mine had to be sealed due to the build-up of dangerous gases and the fear of uncontrolled spread of the fire. Effective placement of mine seals can deprive a mine fire of oxygen and is often followed by water flooding or injection of inert gas into the affected area. When access to the fire zone is impossible because of safety reasons, airtight mine seals can be constructed, in the area of the fire, remotely from the surface through vertical boreholes. Remotely constructed mine seals are commonly made from cementitious material. Since these mine seals are typically erected blindly, it is difficult to determine if mine roof-to-floor and rib-to-rib closure has been obtained. This paper provides a review of the available materials and technology used to remotely construct mine seals through vertical boreholes.

"A Product from Mica Mines.Mica commonly occurs in pegmatites which consist of large crystals of feldspar and quartz, mica constituting but a small proportion of the total rockMuch of the feldspar thus thro n out during the process of mining is pure and of high quality, end the Bureau of Mines has suggested that much of it could be utilized for ceramic purposes. Encouragement is given to such utilization by the fact that several mines now worked for mica were formerly operated for the production of feldspar. ""'here mines are not readily accessible to railroads feldspar utilization might not be feasible, for it is a much lower priced product than mica and cannot therefore bear as heavy transportation expense. '""here mines ire located close to railroads, however, such utilization would tend to reduce the cost of mica mining, and at the same time assist in the solution of the waste disposal problem.The Bureau has recently been informed that some of the feldspar from mica mines near Spruce Pine, N.C., is now being sold and shipped away. An extension of this by-product industry is to be recommended.A Mica Deposit in New York City.The Bureau recently received a mica specimen obtained from a. building excavation at 157th St. and Riverside Drive, New York City. The specimen was about 2 by 4 inches in size, and fairly clear though containing numerous hair cracks. It was obtained only 7 or 8 feet below street level. At greater depth and with more careful methods of excavation material of much better quality might be obtained. The material submitted could be used for mica washers but not for sheet mica. It is stated by an official of a prominent mica company that many such fragments are obtainable in this locality and the possibility of the occurrence of a good mica vein is thereby suggested."
