1. Mine drainage constitutes surface or ground water which flows from mines or mine sites and is usually characterized by concentrations of acidity or alkalinity. 2. The regional geology controlling the ground water flow pattern in conjunction with the life cycle mining plan can serve as a basis for making decisions about quality of water that can be expected to be encountered. 3. In regard to the prevention and control of acid water formation in underground coal mines, much is left undone in research and education: (A) Very little literature is available on this specific subject although much has been written on water management in underground mines. (B) Little or nothing is contained in the text books and curricula used in mining departments at colleges and universities with the result that educational offerings may be seriously deficient in these areas. 4. Prohibiting water entry into underground coal mines is the best method of preventing water pollution. Since this is not possible as mining operations are extended, preventing water or oxygen from contacting acid producing material may offer the next best alternative. 5. More emphasis is needed during the mine planning stage on steps to prevent water pollution. Such life cycle considerations as type of mining, sequence of development and spatial configuration as well as the elements of the drainage network and final network organization and extent must be considered.

Approach Installation of a new type of bag nozzle system eliminates the major dust sources during the bag filling process. How It Works The drawing illustrates components of the new bag nozzle system. The system differs in several ways from the conventional nozzle system. An improved bag clamp reduces the amount of blow-back during bag filling, because it has direct contact with approximately 80 per-cent of the nozzle. A two nozzle arrangement includes an inner or "fill" nozzle surrounded by another nozzle, which is designed to exhaust excess pressure from the bag after it has been filled. The exhaust is powered by an eductor, which uses a venturi effect to exhaust the bag at approximately 50 cfm. The exhaust exits into a bucket elevator and is recycled. A pinch valve automatically opens and closes the exhaust system to the bag.

An economic evaluation was made of the Bureau of Mines incinerator residue separation process to update the one published in 1971 to a mid-1.974 cost basis. This evaluation includes a modification of the glass-recovery operation used In the original plant design as well as a unit to bale the ferrous scrap product before shipment. Products from the plant are ferrous metal, aluminum and copper-zinc scrap, and a mixed-color glass cullet. This report presents the factual data obtained by the Bureau of Mines during diamond-drilling investigation of the Sunset copper deposit in the Index mining district, Snohomish County, Wash. The Sunset mine, first produced copper ore in 1902, but its main period of activity was from 1923 through 1930, The mine has produced 263,500 tons of ore, from which 1,500 ounces of gold, 156,000 ounces of silver, and 12,912,000 bounds of copper-were recovered. "INTRODUCTION The reduction of washery losses of marketable coal is a phase of coal preparation important to many of the Alabama coal producers. The problem has wide scope, and this report deals with but one of its several aspects. The investigation on which this report is based was made by the Southern Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines with the cooperation of the Alabama By-products Corporation and the University of Alabama. The Alabama Byproducts Corporation provided samples of table middlings from its Colta washery on the Mary Lee bed at Flat Creek, Ala.PRACTICE AT THE COLTA WASHYAt Colta run-of-mine coal is crushed in a hammer mill in closed circuit with 5/16-inch square-mesh vibrating screens and tabled without classification on eight rectangular-deck wet tables. The coal is more friable than the bone normally present, and hence the bone is concentrated in the coarser sizes. An unclassified feed of this character can not be tabled with high efficiency to low ash content because of the sizing action of a concentrating table, which is such that when the tables are adjusted to exclude the coarse bone from the washed coal, a large amount of fine coal is lost in the middlings. At the time this investigation was undertaken there was no market outlet for middlings, with the result that middling products had to be discarded with the refuse."

The only known large deposits of talc in Alabama occur near Winterboro, Talladega County. Preliminary examinations were made, and work by the Bureau of Mines was recommended. The deposits were investigated to determine the amount and grade of talc present and to search for new talc deposits in the general area. Seventy-five holes, totaling 3370.4 feet, were drilled with Government-owned core drills from August 1, 1948, to February 11, 1949, and 27 samples were taken for assay. This report presents the factual data disclosed by drilling and the results of beneficiation of the talc.

General An important part of any mine power distribution system is its con¬nection to earth or ground. The grounding network serves to protect men and machinery from the hazards associated with electrical equipment which is operating improperly. Since the mine site is determined by the location of the rock or mineral to be extracted, the conditions required for the installation of an adequate grounding system are not always easily met. If annual rainfall is low or soil resistivity is high, an extensive array of buried metallic conductors may be necessary to assure a low-resistance connec¬tion to earth. Measurement of soil parameters can be made before the construction of a grounding grid is begun, and the configuration of a metallic network, which will yield the desired values of earth resistance and potential gradient, thereby ascertained. Proper design at the time the ground bed is installed will save much time and expense in later years. Ground conductors extend from the buried grid to each piece of mo¬bile and portable equipment via overhead lines or multi-conductor cables. In this fashion all machine frames are referenced to the same potential as the grounding medium. Protective circuitry must be installed to monitor\current flow in the ground conductors or the potential drop across the neutral grounding resistor, which is placed between the grounding grid and the neutral point on the distribution transformer secondary. Traumatic incidents can produce unusually strong emotional reactions that may interfere with your ability to function at the scene or later: You may experience any of the physical, cognitive, emotional, or behavioral symptoms listed below in Table 1. Some people experience emotional aftershocks weeks or months after they have passed through a traumatic event. Others may experience these reactions while still at the scene, where they must stay clearly focused on constantly changing hazards to maintain their own safety and to rescue injured victims.

"INTRODUCTION The South Hecla mine, one of the principal mines of the Alta United Mines Co., is situated at Alta in thee Little Cottonwood mining district, about 30 miles southeasterly from Salt Lake City, Utah. The mine has produced copper, lead, zinc, gold, and silver, and is reported to have been one 'of the principal sources of this country's bismuth from 1912 to 1925. The tungsten mineral, scheelite, has been found but has not been recovered. The extreme need for these minerals during World War II prompted an examination of the property by the Bureau of Mines and resulted in an unpublished report entitled ""The South Hecla Mine, Salt Lake County, Utah"" (fig. 1).A Bureau of Mines project 3301 was initiated, and operations were started early in 1943. The primary purpose of the project was to increase substantially the reserves of bismuth and tungsten ores. The critical situation in regard to lead, copper, and zinc developed during the early stages of the operation, and the work was expanded to include the development of ores 'of these metals.An investigation of 'the Albion, Rustler, and Greeley workings adjoining the South Hecla mine was made, and this work is also described (fig. 2); ACKNOWLEDGEMENTSIn Its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each investigative project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. "The present world-wide demand for increased production in all branches of essential industry involves a matter of vital concern t persons engaged in the mining industry, namely, the productive capacity of the individual mine employee. This applies particularly to coal-mining, upon which other industries so largely depend.The folded and faulted condition of the coal beds in some countries, as well as the thinness and depth of the seams, the adaptability to the beds of available mining machines and equipment are factors which cannot be overlooked in determining what increase in individual output may be looked for in any given country. This subject, while of fundamental importance, can only be referred to in a paper of this length, the primary object here being merely to present a comparative tatamant of individual output under prevailing conditions.The quantity of coal produced by a miner does not accurately indicate the miner's capacity as a workman, not only because of the natural conditions referred to above that limit his annual output, but also because of human factors which may possibly, however, be controlled, such as the demand for coal, the car supply, use of labor-saving machinery, number of days worked during the year, accidents in the mine, etc. It will, however, be an aid in answering the important question as to how and where the immediate need for coal throughout the world may best be surlier, if we examine the output of the miners in the important coal-producing countries over a period of years.Complete official information for recent years is, for several countries, jacking, particularly for France, Austria, and Prussia, but partial data from unofficial sources may be used to show the individual output of the miners in these countries."

"INTRODUCTION Molybdenum deposits occur in Halifax County, N. C., near the eastern border of the Piedmont province. The deposits are associated with a small granite body about 2 miles long and half a mile wide. Molybdenite is the principal ore mineral and is found as disseminations or thin stringers in quartz veins and occasionally in the enclosing granite or schist wall rock.The deposits were investigated by Almon F. Robertson and Charles J. Cohen, engineers of the Bureau of Mines, in 1942 and 1943, who recommended that the deposits be explored to supplement reserves of critical war minerals.The Bureau made the initial exploration of the deposits in July 1943 and continued its work to January 1944. Drilling was resumed from July to December 1946 to test the deposits at &eater depth than had been attempted during the previous exploration."

The work of the United States Bureau of Mines on stream pollution3 by coal-mine drainage has included a study of seasonal variations in acidity and volume of several streams in Pennsylvania. The acidity of these streams has been determined during the two or three years prior to 1930 and the results may be considered to represent "normal" low water conditions. The summer of 1930, however, was unusually dry and represents what may be termed "extreme" low water conditions on these streams. This report is a comparison of the results obtained for extreme low water of 1930 and for other years. The streams investigated were Buffalo Creek in Somerset County, Indian Creek (lower 5 miles) in Westmoreland County, Little Toby Creek in Elk and Jefferson Counties, Daguscahonda Run in Elk County and West Creek in Elk and Cameron Counties. These will be treated separately in the order given. Most of the descriptive matter and physical data pertinent to the streams and drainage basins are taken from published reports of the Pennsylvania State Water Supply Commission, 1917.4

The Bureau of Mines has been investigating deposits of critical and essential minerals in the United States and Alaska since 1939. During the fall of 1942, the Bureau of Mines put down nine diamond-drill holes at the Cape Rosier zinc-copper-lead mine in Hancock County, Maine, that aggregated 2,883 feet of bore. These holes supplemented 13 holes, aggregating. 5,501 feet, put down on the property about 2 years earlier by the St. Joseph Lead Co. Veins of mixed sulfides were intersected in 15 of the holes drilled. Beneficiation tests were made on samples of ore obtained from old dumps. Zinc-copper-lead sulfides occur at the Cape Rosier mine as lenses in a zone of altered agglomerate beneath and between a series of diorite sills. The mineralized zone strikes F. 17° E. and dips southeast. Between July 1881 and September 1883 the mine produced about 10,000 tons of ore reported to have contained 20 percent zinc, 2.8 percent copper, and some lead. The crude ore was hand-sorted, and some. 3,000 tons were reported shipped.

This report describes the results of Bureau of Mines laboratory and preliminary field tests on a rock bolt of helical shape. The flexible construction allows the bolt to maintain a more stable load level than is possible with a straight bolt. Bolt load changes resulting from anchor slippage, blasting shock, or changes in mine geometry with mining advance are minimized. Preliminary field tests were performed at the Kaiser Steel York Canyon mine where the load changes of straight and helical bolts were measured using a vibrating-wire load gage. The field tests were performed to establish the viability of the concept of a helical bolt. The practical usefulness in terms of performance and economics remains to be shown. The change in bolt load for the flexible bolts was one-third that for the straight bolts. There were no malfunctions of the gage, and the bolts maintained a more uniform load than the straight bolts used as controls.

"INTRODUCTION The Phelps Stokes iron deposit, also known as the Iron Mountain claim, was examined by G. L. Thompson, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, in January 1943. As a result, the Division of Geophysical Exploration 3/ made a magnetorater survey of the deposit in June 1944, and the Mining Branch included it in a,project to explore Nevada iron deposits.The Bureau explored the deposit from September to November 1944 by means of 643 feet of diamond drilling and 445 feet of trenching holes were drilled, all of which penetrated more than: 100 feet of good-grade magnetite, although nearly all the ore except that found in the first hole contained an excessive amount of sulfur. Trenching was done largely over the first two holes, PS-1 and PS-2, and exposed the full width of the ore.The deposit is in Nye County, Nevada, 7.7 miles east of Gabbs. The property was discovered in 1902 was patented in 1907. There has been no production from the property and except for the Bureau's investigation,,has not been, explored since it was patented.Magnetite is the principal ore mineral; it occurs as fine-grained particles associated with sulfides and cemented with talc and calcite."

This report describes the development and application of a rail haulage simulator that is readily adaptable for the analysis of a wide variety of operating problems. Various gaming, options have been integrated into the model structure which permit trial and error solutions from a computer terminal prior to capital committment in the actual operation. The high level of information retrieval available allows engineers and managers to develop production data which fit individual needs. In this report, emphasis was placed on the problem of organizing and performing the sequence of operations that are necessary to accomplish a complete mine materials handling simulation. Here, the Rail Haulage Sub-assembly was linked to the Production Sub-system to mine and move coal from seven operating sections to the intermediate and main-line track. The analysis was devoted to the problems associated with how the operating system performs and what alternatives were available to minimize idle times and hence increase productivity. In order to have some objective means of evaluating which of the alter- native methods for production was most appropriate, the choice was to replace the intermediate track with belt conveyors. Since the attempt here was to demonstrate model flexibility and not to establish the goals or trade-offs between computing objectives with which systems judgement must contend, no further alternatives were tried. This is left to management with the data and a problem to solve. Rail haulage simulation is not new, and several, operationally tested models are being used in practice (Bucklen, et. al., 1968).

The Douglas fluorite property is in the Empire district of eastern Pope County, Ill., which lies near the west boundary of the productive Southern Illinois fluorspar field in Hardin and Pope Countios. Production from mines on the Douglas property accounts for about one-half of the 72,000 tons of fluorspar with which the Empire district is credited. This output was from the Sycamore, Pierce, Slapout, and Empire veins, which are normal fissure veins of little displacement along which there has been local wall-rock replacement by fluorite.

The Dempsey tract in Washington County, Mo., had a small production of lead-zinc ore from shallow workings. Old dumps from early-day lead mining contain about 25,000 tons of ore averaging about 3 percent combined zinc and lead. Because of the urgent war requirements for lead and zinc, the Dempsey property was examined by Otto Ruhl, formerly an engineer of the Bureau of Mines in August 1942 and selected for further investigation by churn drilling twenty holes totaling 1,309 feet were bored in the fall of 1943. The results of the work are presented in this paper.
