The Bureau of Mines studied a pulsation damping device designed to smooth pulsating flow in personal respirable dust samplers. The effect on the pulsation dampener efficiency of six parameters was investigated, as follows: Volume, diaphragm elasticity, diaphragm area, center orifice area, inlet-outlet orifice area, and geometry (LID ratio). The results indicate that volume pre-dominates in determining snubber efficiency, while the other parameters become important at small volumes. Geometry has no effect on snubber efficiency. Criteria for an efficient pulsation dampener construction were obtained.

This digest of Brazilian mining law is based upon Decree 4265 of January 15 , 1921 , and its regulation , Decree 15,211 of December 28 , 1921. Unless otherwise stated , the references are to the latter exclusively , since it includes practically everything contained in the law itself . It should be borne in mind that these regulations do not necessarily apply to mines other than those on private and national land . Each State of the Union is free , in respect to State land , to regulate or interpret the national mining law , which is very general in its terms , as it sees fit . Whether such local regulations are anywhere in force with respect to the law of 1921 the bureau has not been informed . Article 64 of the Constitution indicates that only such portions of territory as are required for the defense of the frontiers , for fortifications , military constructions , and federal railways belong to the Union . Lessees of such lands , unless in debt to the Treasury , have preferential prospecting rights for one year ( art . 28 ) . This carries with it the right to work any mines discovered (Law , art . 12 ) .

Reduce shaft sinking costs and workers exposure to mechanical hazards, drill dust, blast dangers, and fumes. Approach Replace drilling and blasting by using a large, cab-mounted impact breaker suspended from the bottom work deck of the galloway. How It Works The pneumatically actuated impact breaker is positioned by an articulated boom con-trolled from an operators cab. The breaker delivers 2,000 ft-lb blows that fragment the rock at the shaft bottom. Mucking is accomplished by a backhoe bucket on an articulated boom mounted on the cab. See photograph. The mucked material can be removed either by dumping into a previously drilled borehole or by being lifted out in a muck bucket as shown in the drawing. Positioning of the breaker, rotating the cab around its vertical axis, and moving the cab support frame around the perimeter of the shaft are all controlled by one joystick. Separate controls position the mucker boom, which can be swung horizontally through a 180° degree arc towards either side of the cab. Because the cab can be rotated to any position around its vertical axis, and can also be moved in a horizontal circle around the shaft, virtually any position on the bottom of the shaft can be reached by the breaker and mucker.

The need for a large capacity, high speed computer is more apparent in the revised model than in the original one. Core storage requirements for data and model logic have at least tripled. This dictates the use of one of the large modern machines such as the IBM 360-370 series or the Univac 1108 and 1110, which handle the model without the need for extensive program overlay. Computer time is expensive on these machines, however, and comprehensive analysis has gone into optimizing computer execution time consistent with model information flow sensitivity. For example, revised locomotive tramming routines have been developed which will significantly cut execution time compared to the previous version. Transceiver Applications The computer coding for the model has been developed to enable program execution and testing using a remote terminal on a time sharing system. In fact, nearly all of the coding, debugging, testing and modifications have been performed from a terminal during develop¬ment. The gaming options described in the Model Input Section of this report have been designed so that they are easily changed by the user from any remote site. One restriction on remote applications which could arise, however, is where highly detailed output options are specified, resulting in a large amount of output records which could be handled more efficiently on a high speed printer.

Float-and-sink tests indicate what results are obtainable by gravity separation and rare therefore an invaluable adjunct to most coal-cleaning processes. However, it is difficult to make a direct interpretation of float-and-sink data on coal, and several systems for interpreting them have been proposed. Of these, that developed and used extensively by Bird3/, Yancey4/, and Gandrud5/ is considered by the author to be the most satisfactory. It makes use of four interrelated curves (hereafter referred to as be "washability curves"). These curves were explained by Bird in a paper6/ published in 1923, but his explanation has been regarded by some as not sufficiently

Electrochemical machining sludge, a troublesome fluid waste product, was dewatered on a bench-scale basis by three alternative methods tested by the Federal Bureau of Mines. These methods would enable recycling 89 percent or more of the liquid content of the sludge and allow the dewatered solids to be dumped as landfill or processed further to recover contained nickel. Dewatering by vacuum precoat filtration was estimated to be the least expensive. Based on treating 20,000 gallons per day of sludge, precoat filtration costs were estimated as totaling 1.96 cents per gallon of sludge. Two options of an alternative method, comprised of acidification, reprecipitation, thickening, and filtration, were estimated to cost either 3.41 or 3.60 cents per gallon of sludge.

Preparation of high-purity magnesium-yttrium alloys by electroreduction of Y2O3 dissolved in a YF3-LiF bath and the subsequent deposition of yttrium in a molten magnesium cathode was investigated in laboratory-scale apparatus. Parameters such as temperature, current density, and electrolyte density were studied. Electrolysis was conducted in a specially designed MgO diaphragm cell at temperatures ranging from 780° to 970° C. Alloys containing up to 55 weight-percent yttrium were prepared at cathode current efficiencies of 21 to 60 percent. Cell design and operation are described, and some of the limiting conditions pertaining to the method are discussed.

Previous research conducted for the USBM by Penn State personnel (Grant GO-101729) found that a need existed to physically model a typical a-c/d-c coal mine section electrical system. Its purpose would be to permit preliminary evaluations of electrical problem solutions prior to launching full-scale investigations. Such use can result in greater flexibility than afforded by present computer models. Furthermore, numerous problems, which would be virtually impossible to incorporate in a computer model at this time, are more easily analyzed with physical simulation. The development of this system is now proceeding at the USBM's Bruceton Research Facilities. However, electrical specifications of scaled down components for its construction are required. This project is a result of that need and has been funded as an extension to Grant GO-133077. The following report covers these specifications. Scope of Work To represent a mined a-c/d-r. coal mine section, the typical component specifications must detail at least: a. one a-c continuous miner, b. two a-c or d-c shuttle cars, c. one a-c or d-c roof bolter, d. one a-c section fan, and e. feeder cables. This Bureau of Mines work was performed to theoretically determine the effects of specimen radius and specimen boundary conditions on the stress state in the rock near the anchor for rock specimens used to investigate expansion anchor behavior. Finite element analyses were performed on mathematical models of varying radius and boundary conditions. A review of the results of these analyses revealed a definite convergence of all stress measures considered as the specimen radius increased. There was, however, a significant variation in all stress measures as the specimen diameter increased from 8 to 12 inches.

Since the organization of the Federal Bureau of Mines, part of the duties of the field men of the Safety Division has been to teach those connected with the minerals industries how to render the proper assistance to an injured worker between the time of the accident and the time when the injured receives medical attention--in other words, "first aid to the injured." For a number of years after the training was introduced, the response of mine officials and workers was very slow. Many times Bureau instructors devoted at least a week to training 5 to 15 or a few more men. However, in recent years since the companies and the Bureau of Mines have had an opportunity to study the results of first aid training, it has been found that in addition to taking care of an injured worker after an accident and thereby greatly reducing the severity rate, the tendency is for the majority of those who take the training to be more careful in their work, or to be more "safety conscious."

"INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARYThis paper is one of a series recently undertaken by the Mining Branch, Bureau of Mines, College Park, Md., to describe current practice in hauling ore and waste by truck at various mines.Heavy-duty ore trucks are replacing railroads at many large open-cut mines and even at a few underground mines. Recently a few mines have been equipped with trucks for transporting ore to a central point, from which conveyor belts move the ore out of the mine. This paper deals only with truck haulage methods and costs.The requirements for efficient low-cost truck haulage are good trucks designed for heavy loads, adequate truck maintenance, smooth roads, and well-trained truck drivers.A correct balance must be maintained between the primary crusher capacity, the number of shovels loading ore, and the number of trucks hauling ore.The cost of tires is important. Tire companies are manufacturing better tires. Mining companies are prolonging the life of tires by building better roads and maintaining correct tire pressure.The trend is toward heavier equipment. In 1949 it cost $0.0925 a long ton to haul ore and waste with a 15-ton truck and $0.0743 a long ton with a 22-ton truck.When trucks are properly maintained, hauling costs do not increase with the age of the trucks. During 1948 it cost $0.1118 per long ton to haul with the four oldest 15-ton trucks and $0.1130 per long ton to haul with the four newest 15-ton trucks, two of which were purchased in 1945 and two in 1947.The weighted ayerage cost of hauling a long ton of ore to the crusher and waste to the dump has been reduced from $0.1159 in 1948 to $0.087 in 1949."

Mineral industry activity in many of the smaller Caribbean Island countries has remained minimal. For this reason, specific references to Bermuda, Guadeloupe, Martinique, and the Netherlands Antilles have been removed from textual and trade table presentations. Any significant future developments will be reported as they occur. Readers are referred to earlier Minerals Yearbook editions for previous information. Table 1 production statistics have been modified in some instances. References to certain nonmetal commodities were eliminated because information has often been unreliable. Their inclusion in table 1 was not considered important to either an overview of the area or to compatibility with volume I of the Minerals Yearbook.

The mining ordinance of Costa Rica dates from 1830. In spite of the numerous attempts to enact a new ordinance , it has been so much amended and reamended during the hundred years of its existence either expressly or , more often , by implication , and sometimes by Executive Decrees of which the validity has been called in question - that in most cases no one but a lawyer thoroughly conversant with Costa Rican mining practice could properly advise with reference to it . The present attempt at a digest of these laws is based on the 1929 edition of Bolandi and Johanning - the only source available in Washington . Apparently this edition has no official character , and the editors themselves often made surmises although one would think that definite facts would be available in Costa Rica where it was published .

The Ellington manganese deposit in Reynolds County J Mo., had been known for some time; and limited exploration, consisting of test pitting and sinking a shaft 54 feet deep on the property, had been done by private interests. Late in 1941, the Bureau of Mines cleaned, deepened, and sampled many of the existing pits and dug and sampled 27 new ones. The shaft was unwatered and sampled, and several pockets of manganese ore were trenched to determine their extent. Samples were analyzed and beneficiation tests on 1 ton of the ore were made at the Rolla, Mo., station of the Bureau of 'Mines. Results of the investigation indicated that the deposit was small and low in manganese content.

In its program of investigation of deposits of strategic minerals, the Bureau of Mines did some development drilling at the Tapley deposit in an endeavor to find an additional source of copper. There are accounts that many years ago the property had some production; there are several old, inaccessible shafts apparently sunk on a vein in rhyolite or diabase. The waste dumps of these shafts contain considerable sulfides, chiefly pyrite and chalcopyrite. To cut the vein below the old mine workings, the Bureau of Mines? diamond-drilled five holes aggregating 1,204 feet. No significant copper mineralization was found.

Analytical, geographical, and geological data on 67 samples of crude oils from Utah are presented, along with some correlations and interpretations. Most of the, geologic formations that produce oil in other areas are also productive in Utah; and as in many other locations, the Permian, Pennsylvanian, and Mississippian formations account for the major amount of the total oil produced in the State. Some anomalies and unusual phenomena are noted. Although most Utah oils are low in sulfur, a sample containing the highest percentage of sulfur ever recorded by the Bureau of Mines is among the oils discussed in this paper. Most of the oil from the major producing formations in Utah is low in sulfur; the same formations produce high-sulfur oils in adjoining Rocky Mountain States. Some Utah oils are both waxy and asphaltic, an unusual combination of characteristics. Correlation index curves for some oils are shown suggesting compositional differences in oils from different producing formations. Production statistics trace the rapid rise of oil production in the State after the first commercial discovery in 1947 and indicate a decline in amounts produced since 1959, the year of peak production in Utah.

Throughout the Appalachian Mountains there are dikes of coarse granite or pegmatite, which were intruded into other rocks. These pegmatite dikes contain feldspar, quartz, white mica (muscovite), black mica (biotite), and other minerals, such as beryl, garnet, and tourmaline. The investigation here reported has to do only with the dikes of the southern Appalachian region, in which the abundance of each mineral is as in the order given above. The pegmatites of this region are in every stage of alteration from those in which the feldspar is fresh to those in which the feldspar has decomposed to kaolin. The muscovite (white mica) shows no evidence of alteration, although most of the other associated minerals show traces of disintegration where the feldspar is completely kao- linized. At many places mining for mica has been done in dikes in which the feldspar is completely kaolinized, though the only evi- dences of disintegration in the mica are clay stains which are some- times noted between the outside lamina. Mining in these pegmatite dikes antedates history, traces of prehis- toric workings and some crude mining implements of stone having been unearthed by recent operations. The prehistoric mining is generally supposed to have been for mica, although investigations fail to show that the aborigines put the mica obtained to any par- ticular use except for ornaments, a few mica ornaments having been found in mounds in this region. The search for kaolin or semikaolinized feldspar is a plausible ex- planation of these prehistoric workings; all of them were in pegmatite that is more or less altered, and seemingly stopped only when the pegmatite became too hard to permit working with crude stone im- plements. The dumps do not represent the amount of material that one would expect, from their extent, the workings to have produced. "A need exists for men in oil-field production work who correspond to the mining engineer of a large mining property. Some oil companies prefer to call such an employee a resident geologist, resident engineer, or a petroleum technologist. He should perhaps be more correctly termed a petroleum production engineer. The duty of such a man is to apply his scientific and geologic training practically to oil-field development work.He should be, by education, a mining, civil, or mechanical engineer, with a knowledge of geology and chemistry. Upon completion of his education, such a man should spend several years in the oil-fields. There are two means of gaining proper experience. The first method is to work for an oil company in making a detailed study of each well, collecting data on the history and production, followed by a preparation of good records, from which well logs can be prepared. From the well logs, the geologic cross-sections, peg-models, and structure contour maps can be made. These allow a comparable, detailed study of each well, which is necessary to solve many of the problems. Along with this the engineer should visit drilling wells daily for collection of samples of formations and for a proper study of how they drill. He should form friendly relations with the drillers and production foremen. The second method of gaining proper experience is to start work as a roustabout, pumper, or on the pipe¬line gang, finally working up to a tool-dresser. After three or four years of such work, the engineer may be classed as a petroleum production engineer."

"The Republic of Colombia on December 30, 1919, enacted a new petroleum law. The Act is expressly limited to mineral oil, natural gas, bitumen, wax and fossilized resin and to asphalt intended for export.The law is not only intended to encourage local investors, but to attract foreign capitalists for oil development. Provision is made for a special edition ion of the law in such languages as the Government may deem necessary to give it extensive circulation within the country and abroad. The published editions must contain the provisions of the law relating to alienship and naturalization.All public lands, or what are termed unclaimed lands, are open to flee prospecting for the purpose of discovering the deposits named in the law, A prospector must obtain from the Government a, license which binds him to deliver to the Government topographic plans of the lands prospected, together with reports of their prospective yielding capacity. This license does not vest the li¬censee with any preferential right for contracting or leasing and may be drawn by the Government at any time.If a discovery is made by a licensee of any of the deposits named and he desires to exploit the same, he must present a memorial or application to the Ministry of Public Works, stating:- (a) the location and municipal district in which deposit beds are found; (b) boundaries of the zone of exploitation, which shall not be more than 5,000 or less than 1,000 hectares; (c) the names and nationality of all persons for whom the lease is sought and the action and time within which,they propose to make the exploitation; (d) the name of the corporation and its legal representatives with their residences; (e) if an alien, he must state his willingness to comply with the law relative to alienship and naturalization; (f) agreement to abide by all of the provieions of the law with regard to Government supervision, payment of taxes, rate of lease and causes of forfeiture; (g) the rate of rent or royalty that the applicant offers to pay, together with any other circumstances that may make the proposed lease advantageous to the Nation."

During 1940 and 1941, the Bureau of Mines examined a large number of silver mines in Arizona for their potential as producers of manganese ores. Although very little manganese ore had been produced from these mines, it was generally known that manganese oxides in appreciable amounts were associated with the silver ore. Following the examinations, the Bureau further investigated some of the ore deposits by diamond drilling and other types of sampling. The results of these investigations, from the viewpoint of manganese, were discouraging. However, the investigations did indicate that appreciable tonnages of manganese-silver ores had been left in some of the mines by earlier operators. Most of these ores were too low-grade for direct shipping as ores of manganese or silver, and their beneficiation by ordinary processes was not economic. Exploitation of the ores appeared to be dependent upon the development of a low-cost milling method, which would yield a marketable manganese product and recover a high percentage of the silver. Later, the Bureau of Mines constructed an experimental mill at Salt Lake City, Utah, for the treatment of manganiferous ores by the dithionate process, designed to recover manganese as a high-grade product. The dithionate residues can be treated by other processes for the recovery of additional values that may be present in the ore. This development focused attention on the manganese-silver ores of Arizona and led to setting up Bureau project No. 370, which is the subject of this report.
