 The general conclusion of earlier investigators was that the action of sulfur dioxide on manganese oxides of Cuyuna ores was not sufficiently pre- ferential to be attractive as the basis for a commercial process. Bradley4/ and his coworkers discarded it for leaching with boiling ammonium sulfate solution, and Sweet5/ used a baking operation to render the iron insoluble. These results were confirmed by the early tests in the present investigation, which were made on brown ores (Sagamore), using acid additions, because at that time the Technologic Committee on Manganese held the opinion that these ores constituted the major available reserve in the Cuyuna district. However, when it appeared that the black ores, or the formation in which they occur, were a possible source of a large tonnage of manganese, the use of sulfur dioxide and sulfuric acid leaching was again reviewed, and a satis- factorily preferential action on the manganese was found. It was originally thought that the use of sulfuric acid ahead of, or at least with, the sulfur dioxide simplified the process, particularly by preventing formation of dithionates. Removal of the phosphorus from the solution by neutralization with lime or fresh ore was suggested. The tests recorded in this report indicate that it is not practicable to use enough acid to prevent formation of dithionate and that the value of excess sulfuric acid is doubtful, particularly in regard to satisfactory manganese:phosphorus and manganese:iron ratios.

[In a certain application it was necessary to compute the incomplete beta function, ß(1/2, p, q), for a certain set of values of p and q. Since the set of p and q values was much more finely spaced than those in any published tables, the authors have decided to make their results available in this report. In connection with this application, the function ß(1/2, p, q) was needed at various points in the p, q plane at intervals of 0.05, 0.05 p = 2q < 10.00. Fletcher, Miller, and Rosenhead3/ state that the only tables available in the desired range are those of Pearson.4/ However, the interval used by Pearson was not small enough for the present application. For this reason, it was decided to calculate the function ß(1/2, p, q) for p = q = 0.05 (0.05) 10.00. This table is published because of the fundamental importance in mathematical analysis of the incomplete beta function.]

A factorially designed, hydraulic fragmentation experiment using a high-pressure water jet was conducted on concrete blocks. Three levels of pressure, standoff distance, and impact angle and two levels of traverse time and surface condition were used. Three variables were measured: depth of penetration, volume of material removed, and width of slot. Three stepwise linear regression equations were developed from the jet parameters and the physical properties of the concrete. The three basic equations, describing the significant jet parameters and physical properties, were developed into 15 predictor equations, five for each variable investigated. Direct regression equations were also developed for each variable investigated to show the result of increasing or decreasing each significant variable. Energy efficiencies were developed for the experiment and for each significant factorial variable.

 This paper describes the method used and results obtained in testing a hand-fired down-draft furnace at a plant in Washington, D. C., in order to determine the method of firing that would give the best results with a minimu of smoke. The smoke regulations of the District of Columbia are very rigid, and are well enforced, A paragraph of the ordinance relating to furnaces other than household, reads, "The emission of dense or thick black or gray smoke or cinders from any smokestack or chimney 113ed in connection with any stationary engine, steam boiler, or furnace of any description within the District of Columbia shall be deemed, and is hereby declared, to be a public nuisance". This ordinance, if literally enforced, would eliminate all ordinary hand-fired grates and furnace combinations where coal other then anthracite is used. However, in several Gov- ernment plants where hand-firing of coal is still necessary conditions have been satisfactorily met by installing the down-draft type of furnace. In these plants, as at all hand-fired plants, considerable difference in operating details and methods is found. The firemen are paid day laborer's wages and are often inexperienced. The instructions of the furnace makers fre- quently do not appeal to the firemen, and are not closely followed, This is partly due to the necessity of running the boilers continuously at much higher ratings than were intended by the manufacturer. Tests were made on a Hawley furnace of this type to improve the methods of firing, particularly at the higher ratings.

Real-world levels of attenuation from hearing protection devices are usually much lower than the rated values obtained under near-ideal circumstances. The shortfall is even more extreme for earplugs than it is for earmuffs, primarily because of the complicated process of fitting the plugs within the ear canal. This study examines the use of a commercially-available lubricant for hearing aids to determine whether it would facilitate improved fit and attenuation for earplugs. In this experiment, ten participants inserted earplugs with and without using the lubricant. Average attenuation was assessed with the Real-Ear-Attenuation-at-Threshold (REAT) technique, and showed over 5 dB improvement when the lubricant was used. Participants obtained an 85% mastery rate using the lubricant versus a 50% mastery rate without. These results indicate several possible applications for improved earplug performance in real-world settings where hazardous noise is unavoidable and effective hearing protection is necessary.

This Technical Memorandum Report is a collection of three working memoranda, prepared during the course of our work for the Bureau of Mines and bound together for convenient reference. These working memoranda present preliminary performance estimates, for baseband voice and narrow- band through-the-earth electromagnetic communications systems of principal interest to the Bureau, for operational/emergency mine communications. The calculations were prepared to obtain early indications of the feasibility and governing parameters of such communications systems. They are based on limited, but pertinent, coal mine electromagnetic noise data acquired to-date by Bureau of Mines contractors; and of theoretical signal-attenuation characteristics for two transmitter antenna types of present interest to the Bureau. The memoranda examine the cases of baseband voice and narrowband communications for uplink and downlink transmissions, for frequencies up to 3kHz. Downlink transmissions are via a horizontal wire antenna, up- link transmissions via a vertical-axis loop antenna, for typical mine depths of 300, 600, and 1000 feet. Representative coal-mine overburden conductivities of 10-2 mhos/meter (moderate and common) and 10-1 mhos/meter (high) were used; for voice and narrowband, 10-1 for narrowband only. Examples of high, moderate, and low; surface and subsurface; harmonic and broadband-impulsive noise conditions were taken from NBS and Westinghouse (WGL) mine noise data, together with examples of high- and low levels of ELF atmospheric noise taken from M.I.T. Lincoln Laboratory data. These feasibility calculations are not intended to serve as definitive and complete treatments, but as a starting point: to establish first-order estimates of the magnitude and variability of transmitter power requirements under different noise, overburden conductivity, and mine depth conditions; to identify relationships, conditions, or frequencies that are likely to limit or enhance system performance; to reveal items requiring further investigation and data still required; and to suggest practical methods for optimizing system performance. These objectives were met by the calculations. Simple experiments to support these calculations can and should be carried out; together with more detailed investigations of specific modulation, coding, noise-suppression, voice-compression and signal-conditioning techniques, aimed at producing through-the-earth operational/emergency mine-communication systems that are not only effective, but practical and economically sound.

The origin of gaseous hydrocarbons in coal, predominantly methane, can be traced to the natural processes of coalification. The higher rank coals or the more deeply buried seams retain more gas than low rank coals or shallow seams. It is estimated that up to 460,000 cubic feet of all types of gases are produced during the formation of one ton of coal (Cervik, 1969). The chief components of these gaseous products are methane, carbon dioxide, nitrogen and water vapor. Most of these gases escape during the various stages of decomposition but with eventual presence of overlying impermeable beds, there may be as much as 2,000 cubic feet of gas retained per ton of coal. Over geologic time, diffusion and other processes such as geologic disturbances in the earth&apos;s crust remove all but 500 to 2000 cubic feet of gas per ton of coal (Cervik, 1969). It is this residual methane which is of primary concern when mine openings are made in coal measures. Extensive data compiled by the United States Bureau of Mines reveal that some coal mines in this country emit up to 20 million cubic feet of methane per day (Spencer, 1970; Irani et al, 1972). Toxic, poisonous and respirable gaseous pollutants and explosive gases, predominantly methane, are injected into the ventilation stream from active sections and gobs. The liberation of methane in gob areas may, under certain circumstances, become extremely large. In some instances it may constitute up to 70 percent of the total yield of gas in a mine. Several experimental programs were conducted at the Pittsburgh Research Center to investigate the level of mine fire detection and alarm capability possible using state-of-the-art technology. These programs involved comparison of the response and alarm time of optical and ionization type smoke sensors to smoldering and flaming coal combustion in a smoke chamber. Coal combustion experiments conducted in the smoke chamber demonstrated that a CO concentration of 5 ppm above ambient corresponded to an optical density of 0.022m1. For the four smoke sensors for which a continuous analog signal was available, a smoke sensor alarm was defined as the average background signal plus ten times the peak-to-peak noise. This alarm criterion resulted in the association of the alarm for three of the four sensors with a smoke optical density of 0.022m-1. and 0.033m-1 for the fourth smoke sensor. The smoke sensors used in the smoke chamber studies were incorporated into large scale diesel fuel fire experiments conducted under normal ventilation conditions in the Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) at the Pittsburgh Research Center. These experiments showed that a diffusion mode smoke sensor alarmed earlier than a diffusion mode CO sensor; and, based upon the measurement of the optical transmission at the location of a pump mode ionization type smoke sensor that a pump mode ionization smoke sensor alarmed at an average smoke optical density of 0.021m" for the twelve experiments conducted. A series of 30 and 330 kW diesel fuel fire intensity experiments were conducted under zero airflow conditions in the SRCM. It was determined that :(I) thermal sensors are inadequate at 30 m from a 300 kW fire;(2) a diffusion mode ionization smoke sensor can be more effective for mine fire detection than a diffusion mode CO sensor;(3) recommendations can be made for sensor spacing in a mine entry based upon the measured CO buoyancy induced spread rates along the mine roof and the time for a developing coal fire to ignite a conveyor belt.

This report describes a 4-inch diameter borehole probe which contains a low light level TV camera, magnetic compass, light illumination source, bottom/water detector sensor and a pointing angle sensor. The camera viewing angle is at a right angle to the probe&apos;s body. All data from the sensor is multiplexed into the closed circuit camera video for transmission on a single 50 ohm coaxial cable to a surface control unit. Likewise control of the probe&apos;s power, zoom lens, focus, panning and aperture is accomplished via a down-link multiplexed on the same cable.

General A review of the literature has revealed important areas which should be investigated during the field work. Of the utmost importance is the safety of mine personnel. Should a phase-to-ground fault occur on a shovel or other piece of equipment, current may return to the substation through the machine&apos;s contact surface with the mine floor, thereby raising the frame above ground potential and posing a shock hazard to anyone who touches the equipment. If the frame-to-earth resistance is very low, then no dangerous potentials will be developed, and a basis for elimination of the ground conductors from trailing cables could be postulated. However, should the contact resistance be high, then lethal voltages could be present on the machine frame. In this instance, low-resistance ground conductors in the trailing cable would be a necessity. Therefore, field tests should include measurements of the earth resistance of electrically operated portable or mobile mining equipment such as shovels, draglines, and drills. When the electrical distribution system is subject to lightning discharges, the grounding grid must safely carry to earth and dissipate enormous current surges. It is essential that the grounding grid have a low value of earth resistance, because any potential developed across the grounding grid as a result of current flow will appear on the frames of all machinery connected to the grid. Reduce costs of recontouring surface mined land by improving bulldozer blades. Approach A specialized 48-foot-wide bulldozer blade set at an angle, a 13-foot bulldozer blade with swept-forward end sections, and a 24-foot grading bar are used in conjunction with conventional bulldozers to reduce the cost of recontouring surface mined land. How They Work The angle blade is used to do the initial and intermediate leveling of long spoil banks. It is mounted at an angle on two 410-horsepower crawler tractors in a side-by-side offset configuration, but requires only one operator since both tractors are controlled by a single set of controls. The angle blade usually begins its cycle at one end of the spoil bank where the operator fills the blade and moves forward, continuously cutting and casting the material to the repose slope. At the opposite end of the spall bank, the angle blade turns around and begins cut-ting and casting material to the opposite repose slope. This action continues until adjacent banks meet or the lateral distance from the center line of the spoil bank to the repose slope exceeds approximately 40 to 50 feet. At this distance, the sidecasting angle blade is no longer effective, and conventional bulldozers are used to do the final land shaping.

Mining machine cabs were built to comfortably fit 90 percent of adult American males, and have controls that allow fast natural reactions during emergencies. These cabs and controls also fit 40 percent of the adult female population in the United States. The operators are also positioned for good visibility and for protection from roofing and ribbing hazards. Two basic designs were developed, one for seam heights on the order of 4 feet I and the second for seam heights near 8 feet. The sitting position of the largest person within the sample size group (termed a "95th percentile man") determined the basic cab shapes. The size of different parts of the human body and how they work together I established other design features of the cab. Areas of visibility, limits of operator movement, comfortable seating angles, etc., were carefully identified for the largest and the smallest persons within the sample size group. Placement of controls was based on these findings. The controls are designed and placed to allow operation with minimum physical strain and fatigue. See chart on other side of sheet.

"INTRODUCTION A preliminary examination of the Green Monster and Benich copper prospects was made by engineers E. W. Newnan and George N. Bennett, of the Bureau of Mines, on December 13, 1943. In an unpublished report, it was stated that certain geologic features appeared to be similar to those associated with the copper deposits of the nearby Butte district. On these premises, a preliminary diamond-drilling program was recommended to explore 300 to 400 feet below the mineralized outcrops for the possible presence of a sulfide enrichment zone. In accordance with that recommendation, three holes were drilled. This report presents the data provided by that preliminary drilling exploration.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Develop design and support guidelines for coal mine entry intersections based upon results of integrated field and numerical modeling analyses of structural parameters for improving ground stability. Background Underground coal mines contain a large number of entry intersections. Dome-shaped zones over the intersections are unstable and are often associated with roof falls. These roof falls may occur during mine development, trapping equipment and endangering miners. These high-risk areas of the mine account for 10 pct of the total number of ground-failure-caused fatalities. The falls, ranging from heights of 1 to 20 ft, cause high dilution and slow the advance rates. Stability at intersections is influenced by four structurally interrelated parameters: in situ stress, geological discontinuities and physical properties, intersection geometry, and roof span. Because of the complex interaction of these parameters, the actual mechanism of roof failure may vary considerably, depending upon the roof lithology, rock strength, and stress conditions.

The concept of isokinetic measurement of strength was originally related by Hislop and Perrine.(1)Characteristics of an isokinetic exertion are constant velocity throughout a predetermined range of motion. Strictly speaking, a means of speed control, and not a load in the usual sense, is applied in isokinetic exertions.(1)However, load and resistance are definitely present in this technique. In this case, the load is a result of the energy absorption process performed by the device to keep the exertion speed constant. The device prevents energy from being dissipated through acceleration in isokinetic exercise. The energy is instead converted into a resistive force, which varies in relation to the efficiency of the skeletal muscle. Since the speed of motion is held constant in isokinetic exercise, the resistance experienced during a contraction is equivalent to the force applied throughout the range of motion. For this reason, the technique of isokinetic exercise has sometimes been referred to as accommodating resistance exercise. This type of exercise allows the muscle to contract at its maximum capability a tall points throughout the range of motion. At the extremes of the range of motion of a joint, the muscle has the least mechanical advantage, and the resistance offered by the machine is correspondingly lower. Similarly, as the muscle reaches its optimal mechanical advantage, the resistance of the machine increases proportionally. It must be understood, however, that while isokinetic devices control the speed of the exertion, this does not assure a constant speed of muscle contraction. The speed of isokinetic contractions is constant during individual exertions; however, it is also possible to compare muscular performance over a wide range of isokinetic velocities. Increasing the isokinetic speed of contraction will place increasing demands on Type II muscle fibers (fast twitch and fast oxidative glycolytic). Workplace Assessment It is clear that isometric strength testing cannot substitute for dynamic strength assessment when examining highly dynamic occupational job demands. As most industrial work tasks contain a significant dynamic component, analysis of isokinetic strength capabilities appears to offer some advantage to isometric testing in this regard. However, it must be recognized that isokinetic devices are not entirely realistic compared with free dynamic lifting in which subjects may use rapid acceleration to gain a weight-lifting advantage.

This report presents a comprehensive tabulation of lifting cost data collected from oil companies in many different fields. These data were collected during the writer&apos;s studies of surface equipment and methods of pumping oil wells, in practically all of the important oil fields in the United States and are based on average operating conditions at 57 groups of properties with a total of 4,497 producing wells. Although lifting cost is only a part of the total cost of producing oil, it nevertheless gives a representative cost figure for purposes of comparison.

The Jerry Peak, Jerry Peak West, and Boulder Creep: Wilderness Study Areas contain no identified mineral resources. Two workings, a 20-ft-long adit and a pit, were found in Paleozoic, brecciated, limonitic jasperoid in the east part of the Jerry Peak Wilderness Study Area (WSA), but no significant metallic mineral values were noted. Lenses and pods of quartz containing copper minerals occur in Paleozoic sedimentary rocks 1/2 mi north of the Jerry Peak West WSA. Similar rocks crop out along Pine Creep: in that study area but no copper-bearing quartz lenses were found.

A few studies on the relationship of the fusion temperature of the ash on coke to that of the corresponding coal have been made on commercial high-temperature cokes. H. J. Rose3/ in 1921 compared the fusion temperatures of the ashes of 10 coals and the cokes produced from them and concluded that they were in such hose agreement that either figure could be used. More recently, Quarfort4/ found that the ash of coke fused at a somewhat lower temperature than that of the original coal. As the ash of a coal and that off tie coke produced therefrom have the same origin their chemical composition should be identical, provided that carbonization has not altered the inorganic, or ash-forming, constituents of the coal, and such alteration seems highly improbable. However, it has been shown5/ that coke is liable to contamination by iron during crushing and grinding preparatory to sampling. Pieters6/ found that coke ash was contaminated in this manner up to 0.4 percent. Extraneous iron would lower the ash-fusion temperature because such iron may form ferrous silicate, which is readily fusible.7/ These results provide a basis for the prediction that the ash of coke will fuse at a lower temperature than that of the corresponding coal, especially if the fine grinding of the coke was done by rubbing -surfaces of iron, as in a disk pulverizer or bucking plate.

The Gates of the Mountains Wilderness study area is underlain by intrusive and sedimentary rocks, mainly limestone. No limestone has been produced from the study area; suitable material is more readily available elsewhere. Small amounts of gold, sapphires, and corundum were produced from a placer deposit along the banks of the Missouri River. The remaining gravel contains low mineral values. Other alluvial deposits along the Missouri River and Beaver Creek contain no identified economic resources other than sand and gravel. Some deposits could provide suitable construction material for local use.
