Carbon monoxide (CO) sensors are used in mine fire early-warning systems. Experiments were conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines with six diffusion-type CO sensors to determine their response to a reference CO concentration under both static and dynamic flow conditions. Static experiments were conducted with 0.5 L/min flow of 16 ppm CO in N2 through 8-and 12-L chambers. Dynamic flow experiments were conducted in two environmental chambers: One had directional flow capability of 1 m/s, and the second provided moderately nondirectional flow as high as 1.8 m/s. Reference CO concentrations of 13.5 to 19 ppm in air were used for the dynamic experiments. The results of the static experiments demonstrated that the sensors consistently underestimated the reference gas concentration. The dynamic experiment results showed the sensors provided reasonable agreement with the reference gas concentration when directional flow effects were not considered. Directional flow effects were evaluated for two sensors. One of the sensors showed a strong dependence upon the relative orientation of the diffusion tube with respect to flow direction. The second sensor did not show a dependence upon flow direction. The sensors' directional flow effect is significant for their proper in-mine utilization.

Glass wool meeting requirements for commercial use was made from glassy fractions of urban solid wastes by the Bureau of Mines. This research was a part of the Bureau's program to develop building products and other usable materials from reclaimed urban waste materials. Mixes of molten glass were fiberized into glass wool during laboratory studies by impingement of a jet of compressed air on a stream of the molten glass. The principal test variable studied was composition of the melt; this was varied by adding dolomite and alumina to obtain molten glass with the handling characteristics required for producing final wool products of the desired composition and physical characteristics. When no charge is made for the waste glass and approximately $75 per ton can be obtained for the wool product, an interest rate of return on investment after taxes of about 12 percent can be obtained. If a charge of $5 per ton is required for the waste glass, a selling price of about $78 per ton would be necessary to obtain a l2-percent-interest rate of return on investment after taxes.

The 23d annual survey of the peat industry by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, revealed that 75 producers in 17 States re-ported commercial production of peat in 1956. Forty-seven producers reported humus production, 19 reported reed-sedge peat, 17 reported moss peat, and 1 reported muck. This total exceeds the number of active operations, but several producers reported recovering more than one type of peat. Fifty-five percent of the total production was reported as peat humus, 30 percent as reed-sedge peat, and 15 percent as moss peat. A negligible amount was reported as other types. More than one-fourth of the total output was raw peat with no preparation, other than having been air-dried. The remainder consisted of processed peat prepared for use by cultivation, shredding, or kiln drying.

The Bureau of Mines investigations described in this report were undertaken to devise a process to economically recover precious metals and copper from low-grade, complex electronic scrap generated in large quantities by military and civilian electronic operations. Leaching with various media is applicable to certain selected items of electronic scrap but cannot be practically applied to complex mixtures of scrap. A process comprising incineration, caustic leaching to remove aluminum, smelting with a siliceous slag, and electrolysis recovered 99.9-percent-pure copper metal and anode slimes assaying more than 7,000 ounces per ton of combined precious metals. Silver, gold, and copper recoveries were 93, 95, and 87 percent, respectively. Cost analysis indicated that an alternative process using direct smelting of the scrap to make assayable products for sale to a custom smelter would provide better overall financial returns.

"The Bureau of Mines has repeatedly emphasized the necessity of completely ""rock-dusting all coal mines, except anthracite mines, in every part whether in damp or dry condition."" Every open accessible part of, the, mine without exception should be thoroughly rock-dusted, including parallel entries, air courses, trackless entries, crosscuts, and rooms to within at least 40 feet of every coal face. Very few mines have followed this recommendation and warning, with the result that there have been explosions not only in mines which have not used rock dust but also in so-called rock-dusted mines. Following a number of mine explosions it has been reported that the mine was rock-dusted,"" whereas it is probable that only some of the haulage roads had been given a hurried application of rock dust and in most instances not as much as 5 per cent of the mine was really rock-dusted. That is not rock-dusting.Some conscientious, well-meaning mining men have felt that rock-dusting of haulage roads would effectively stop an explosion; however, when shown, through widespread explosions in mines ""well rock-dusted"" according to the above method, that leaving large areas undusted, furnishes paths through which a violent explosion may travel, these mining men have realized the necessity of thorough rock-dusting and have adopted this explosion-prevention method.The Mather Collieries mine, Pickands, Mather and Co., operators, at Mather, Pa., was the first mine in Pennsylvania to receive, full credit for rock-dusting under the new 'stringent ruling of the Pennsylvania Compensation Rating Bureau, the provisions of which require that:"

A remote-actuated stench gas fire-warning system has been designed and tested by the Bureau of Mines. This system makes use of the hard-wire network for the mine's phone pager system, thus greatly reducing the system cost. By locating stench gas canisters with remote-actuation release capabilities near working sections, the fire-warning time can be greatly reduced. In a test of the system in a Missouri lead mine, the time required to warn miners of a fire at two working faces was reduced from about 20min with the conventional system to less than 4 min with the remote-actuated system.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has established a wire rope research laboratory to examine the factors that affect the life of wire rope. Ropes of sizes ranging from 3/4 to 2 in. in diameter and from 2 to 35 ft in length were tested to determine their breaking strength, elongation, and torque. This was done to characterize the test equipment on ropes used in mine hoisting systems.

To furnish the information frequently requested by producers and suppliers as to the fuel requirements of the Federal Government , the Bureau of Mines , with the cooperation of the consuming departments and establishments , has collected the data herein , showing the Government's fuel consumption during the fiscal year ended June 30 , 1930. The following tables show the quantities and kinds of fuels consumed by the Federal Government in each of its departments and their principal branches , in each State , and in Alaska , Hawaii , Panama Canal Zone , Porto Rico , and the Virgin Islands . The separate departments and establishments were asked to supply information for each Federal building or other plant and , as to vessel fuel , the amount loaded at each port of supply . Fuels consumed in internal combustion engines are not included . The report does not include fuels used by Post Offices of the fourth class , since their fuels are not purchased by the Federal Government but are covered by an allowance in each case for light and heat . In some cases the data supplied represent receipts , which are approximately equivalent to consumption . The present study is believed to be the first effort to bring together the data representing the Government's requirements for the various fuels which it consumes . Figures showing the coal consumed by the Federal Government were gathered for the year 1922. These data are shown in an article by O. P. Hood and R. H. Kudlich of the Bureau of Mines , contributed as a chapter to " Industrial Coal ; Purchase , Delivery and Storage , " published by the American Engineering Council . The figures of coal consumption presented herewith are approximately comparable with those published for 1922 , a relatively small difference being due to the fact that the 1922 figures include the Philippine Islands and all other territory in which any coal was consumed by the Government . At the present time , the only data on Government fuel consumption that are published regularly are those compiled by E. B. Swanson , chief economist of the petroleum economics division of the Bureau of Mines . These are published annually by the Bureau of Mines in " Sources and Distribution of Major Petroleum Products , Atlantic Coast States , " and by the bureau in cooperation with the American Petroleum Institute in the annual " National Survey of Fuel Oil Distribution . " It is believed that the data herewith will prove of interest and value to the fuel industries as well as to Government consumers and that it will also afford a basis for measuring future trends in the use of the various fuels by the Federal Government . Figures showing the quantities of the various kinds of fuels consumed by each of the executive departments and independent establishments , are given in Table 1. Researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines have developed a FORTRAN computer program that can calculate stress states from overcoring measurements obtained from hollow inclusion cells, triaxial cells, strain gauges installed on the wall of a bored raise, doorstopper gauges, borehole deformation gauges, or a combination of any of these gauges. Such stress states are calculated with reference to global and principal coordinate systems. The background of the development of the program, its capabilities, and its special features, as well as the input required, are described in this report. Sample output is also shown in appendix C. Difficulties associated with numerical calculations of principal stresses and directions are pointed out. Threshold values for detecting these problems are reported; these values may be changed by the user as desired. Several test problems were set up to verify the computer program and were successfully solved.

The location and production potential of a large block of strippable reserves in North Dakota were determined by using published data as a base and adding new drill hole data or other data contributed by companies that presently own or lease coal lands. Only beds exceeding 5 feet in thickness, under less than 120 feet of overburden, and in large blocks of 5 million tons or more were included in the estimates. All such reserves are in the Fort Union Formation of western North Dakota and are lignite in rank. Sixteen large blocks of reserves evaluated in this study are estimated to contain a total of 4.1 billion tons of strippable lignite.

Data regarding the composition and physical properties of Florida land-pebble phosphate-waste slime are presented, and the feasibility of dewatering and beneficiating the slime by several different methods is discussed. Chemical analyses, electron micrographs, and X-ray diffraction data showed that principal constituents of the slime included quartz, attapulgite, and flaorapatite. Viscosity of the slime changed with pH; thixotropic, Newtonian, and rheopectic states were observed as the pH increased. Use of various flocculating agents was not effective in improving thickening properties of the slime. Dewatering tests using pressure filtration showed that temperature influenced the filtration rate more than pressure; the filtration rate at 165° C was tenfold that at room temperature. Selective flotation of the slime, using two different processes, gave promising results. About 25 pct of the phosphate was recovered in a concentrate assaying 31 pct P205, Other tests demonstrated that the slime could be successfully fractionated at 20-microns using a hydrocyclone. In hydrometallurgical tests about 80 pct of the phosphorus and alumina were chemically extracted from the slime using sulfuric acid. Limited bacteriological studies made of the slime showed that several types of microorganisms were present and grew in the material despite the presence of fluorine-bearing minerals.

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of small amounts of cobalt in nickel on the tensile properties and hardness of representative types of austenitic stainless steels . Cobalt substitutions for nickel up to 2 weight - percent were made in types 302 and 309 stainless steels . Data were obtained at room temperature for tensile strength , yield strength , percentage elongation , percentage reduction in area , and hardness . In type 302 steels , tensile strength and hardness increased with increased percentages of cobalt , percentage elongation and reduction in area decreased , and yield strength showed little change . Property changes were largely due to the reduction of nickel content rather than to the addition of cobalt . In type 309 steels , only minor variations were observed for the properties investigated ; the effects of the relatively snall cobalt substitutions and nickel reductions were somewhat reduced by the higher total alloy content .

Spark ignition of combustible-gas mixtures is a relatively old subject of investigation and has been treated both experimentally and analytically by many people. Elements of static and current electricity are almost always present in mining and industrial operations, and the spark can be an extremely efficient source of ignition. Thus the practical interest of such problems as the "intrinsic safety" of electrical apparatus is obvious. Ignition and quenching phenomena are the primary laboratory representatives of combustion phenomena that are dynamically nonsteady, and such nonsteady phenomena playa considerable part both in industrial processes and in safety matters, although they are of less immediate practical interest. Considerable effort has been expended by the Federal Bureau of Mines in investigations of spark ignition.5 6 7 8/ Primarily, this work has established the significance of several of the parameters involved. A series of laboratory evaluations examined the impact of water spray pressure, curtain setback distance, and external and underboom spray use for controlling respirable dust levels and sulfur hexafluoride tracer gas concentrations around a continuous mining machine. This mining machine was equipped with a flooded-bed dust scrubber and was positioned in the box or slab cut. Exhaust line brattice was used for all tests. Dust levels were measured in the return airway and at locations representing the operators of the continuous mining machine and the standard and off-standard shuttle cars. Increasing water pressure or using the underboom sprays produced no significant impacts on dust levels, although their interactions did produce some significant impacts. Increasing curtain setback distance often elevated dust levels, likely by reducing the amount of airflow reaching the face. Use of the external sprays created additional airflow around the mining machine that pushed the dust cloud past the scrubber inlets. This significantly increased dust levels at all sampling locations. Tracer gas levels were measured on the off-curtain and curtain sides of the cutter head and in the return airway. Increasing water pressure generally led to significantly increased gas levels on the curtain side, although a slight decrease was observed on the off-curtain side with the machine in the box cut. Increasing setback distance elevated gas levels on both sides of the cutter head and in the return by limiting the quantity of ventilation airflow reaching the face. Use of the external sprays provided additional airflow along the off-curtain side of the machine, significantly reducing gas levels in this region. These sprays adversely impacted the dilution and removal of gas on the curtain side of the cutter head. Use of the underboom sprays adversely impacted gas levels on both sides of the cutter head. Use of the external sprays provided the best control of respirable dust and face gas concentrations. The smaller increases in miner operator dust levels produced by these sprays were offset by larger reductions in face gas levels on the off-curtain side of the cutter head. Although the underboom sprays minimally impacted respirable dust levels, use of these sprays was not recommended because they increased face gas levels.

"The University of Minnesota and the U.S. Bureau of Mines collaborated to develop and field test a personal diesel exhaust aerosol sampler (PDEAS). The PDEAS was field tested in five underground coal mines that use continuous miners and a variety of diesel vehicles, including diesel haulage and utility vehicles. One mine was surveyed a second time, with the haulage vehicles fitted with a low-temperature disposable diesel exhaust filter (DDEF). Aerosol samples were collected with a variety of instruments, including the PDEAS and the microorifice, uniform-deposit impactor (MOUDI). This paper presents the diesel exhaust aerosol (DEA) concentration data collected in these mines and assesses the impact of diesel face-haulage equipment, with and without exhaust filters, on underground mine air quality.The average DEA concentration at the haulageway location for five mines, determined by the PDEAS, was 0.89 mg/m3, with a standard deviation of 0.44 mg/m3 • DEA contributed 52 pct, of the respirable aerosol at the haulageway location. Use of the DDEF at one mine reduced DEA by 95 pct, with a standard deviation of 6 pct, and filter life averaged 10 h. DEA contributed a large proportion of the respirable aerosol concentrations in mines with diesel equipment, and a substantial reduction was achieved with use of a DDEF. INTRODUCTIONDiesel equipment is gaining popularity in underground coal mines. There are an estimated 1,951 units of diesel equipment in 152 underground coal mines compared with 1,100 units in 110 mines 5 years ago (J).5 This increased use is due to the recognition that diesel-powered vehicles are more versatile, which can contribute to increased productivity compared with their electrically powered counterparts. Approximately 33 pct of the diesel vehicles haul coal, 45 pct haul personnel and materials, and- 22 pct perform other duties, such as roof bolting, rock dusting, and road maintenance. Most mines using diesel equipment are located in Kentucky, Utah, Virginia, and Colorado."

A computer program is presented to calculate the shape factors and volumes of cells from a potentiometric model, using coordinates of the inter-sections of the stream lines and equal potentials and a few additional coordinates. Shape factors are used in flow computations when the geometry is complicated. The program also includes computer instructions to divide the channels into cells of equal volume and to obtain the shape factor for each of these equal volume cells. An illustrated example using the potentiometric model for the waterflood of a seven-spot well-spacing pattern is presented. The information contained in the report is of value not only to those allied to the subject but also to others, because many of the techniques can be conveniently used in formulating other computer programs.

Computer programers are often required to make modifications to unfamiliar Fortran routines. This Bureau of Mines report describes a computer program designed to aid the programer in such a situation by reorganizing: Fortran routines. This reorganization includes a sequential renumbering of the routine's statement numbers, a sequential renumbering, and relocation of format statements, an alphanumeric reordering of dimensioned and typed variables, a uniform pattern of text spacing, and a sequential numbering of the records in the final Fortran routine. The computer program has been extensively tested by the author and has proved to be a valuable tool for reorganizing Fortran routines developed under contract and later utilized by the Bureau, and for preparing routines for publication.
