When the word "gas"' is mentioned in connection with mining almost invariably it is inferred that the explosive gas, methane, is in mind and that the reference is to coal mining. Although methane is likely to occur in any coal mine the metal mines of the world contain by far a greater variety of gases than do the coal mines. Often the gases in metal mines are as dangerous as the gases likely to be found in coal mines, and sometimes are even more deadly. A coal mine is more likely to contain methane than a metal mine. In rare instances it may contain high percentages of nitrogen or carbon dioxide or it may be deficient in oxygen where the air is confined in a blind end or in a sealed region. Much more rarely relatively small percentages of ethane or other hydrocarbons with an odor of ether, gasoline, or kerosene, or minute percentages of hydrogen sulphide are found in a coal mine. During a coal-mine fire or explosion carbon monoxide content is likely to be high (4 per cent or more), and if the coal contains much sulphur the high fumes may contain some sulphur dioxide.

Several recent ignitions of firedamp - a mixture of methane and air - in American coal mines have been attributed to frictional heating when hard rocks were struck while cutting and drilling coal seams. Although none of these ignitions caused severe explosions, they call attention to a problem that can become increasingly significant as mechanized mining is developed further. The power in and rapid release of energy from high-speed machinery has increased the rates of advance into virgin coal creating many problems. Unforeseen faults and hard mineral inclusions may be encountered; coal brought down in this way is finer in size; more gas is released from the seam; it is frequently more difficult to provide adequate ventilation at the' face; and new roof-support problems must be solved. In particular, continuous mining machines (also known as continuous miners) greatly increase the frequency of contact between cutter bits and minerals. In view of these conditions, it may be expected that more gas ignitions will occur as a result of frictional heating unless the situation is understood and remedial measures are introduced. The problem of frictional heating is not new in coal mining. In Europe, particularly in England, it has been a concern for more than a century. During the last 15 to 20 years frictional ignitions have been a major cuase of explosions in British mines. Explanations for the greater number of such ignitions in England may be the special character of the coal measure strata, the mining methods, the rate of gas emission and possibly its composition, and less effective ventilation near the face. To reduce the ignition hazard, considerable laboratory and field research has been conducted, particularly by the Safety in Mines Research Establishment, Ministry of Fuel and Power of Great Britain. Much of the information presented in this report has been drawn from these studies.

This is the fourth progress report in the series on the use of detachable rock-drill bits in the metal mines of the United States. It contains comparative statistics and costs or drilling at eight mines not reviewed in previous reports, comparison of the use of detachable bits at small mines and large mines, a discussion on the life of drill rods, and general conclusions derived from an analysis of the rock-drilling practice at all the mines investigated on this survey. This paper completes the descriptions of operating practice in rock drilling at individual mines. Data on drilling practices at 28 mines are given in appendices I and II and drilling costs are shown in appendix III. Research in the fundamentals of rock drilling, including the use of detachable bits, has been undertaken by the Bureau of Mines in its testing adit at Mount Weather, Va. Reports on the progress off this investigation will be issued when results warrant their publication.

Previous work done by the authors of this report indicates that hydraulically-placed backfill can be strengthened several fold by various placement methods. Sunshine mill tailings were tested by these placement methods and strength increases up to thirty times were achieved over the ordinary placement methods. A computer simulation study of the test stope in the Sunshine Mine showed that a high-modulus fill absorbs up to 27% of normal stresses versus 7% for "normal" fill while reducing maximum convergence 28% versus 8% for "normal" fill. Although high-modulus fill was not placed in the test stope during this contract, various instrumentation was purchased, designed and built to record necessary data in the stope. Stress gauges were placed in the pillars and recorded data corresponded quite closely with theoretical projections.

Man has been engaged in the construction of tunnels in. rock for several thousand years. During that time, methods of tunneling have changed drastically. Hordes of men chipping away at the tunnel face have been replaced by mechanical drills and explosives and by tunnel boring machines. Spoil is no longer carried on the backs of humans, but is now removed by trains, trucks or conveyor systems. These and other changes have had the effect of greatly increasing the rate of tunneling, while at the same time, greatly decreasing the potential dangers to workmen. Although the techniques, equipment and material used for tunneling are being continually improved, rock tunneling is still a slow and expensive process. Significant improvements and innovations are needed to reduce the cost and time required for tunneling if we are to fully utilize the subsurface to aid in the solution of urban problems and in the conservation of resources. This report is intended to facilitate the orderly development of tunneling technology by focusing attention on the inadequacies of rock tunneling and the improvements that are needed. The data presented were derived from the results of a comprehensive questionnaire that was completed during the summer of 1969 by more than 600 individuals and organizations in 17 countries. Table 1 lists the countries and the number of replies from each. Appendix A contains a summary profile of the national responses, while the text presents the results and a brief analysis of the conclusions that might be derived from the data in the questionnaire. The data shown in Appendix A represent the consensus opinion of each of the 17 nations without regard to the number of individual replies or the amount of tunneling activity that is represented. The national consensus was determined for each country by a plurality of the individual responses, in some cases modified by the opinion of the rapporteur. Tire above procedures can lead to situations which are misleading. For example, experience and activity arc a rational basis for analysis; but, if national replies are weighted on this basis (i.e., number of responses), informed and valuable opinion of less active countries would probably be overwhelmed and lost. In analysing the data on the basis of national responses without weighting, it becomes apparent that many of the same problems exist under a given set of conditions regardless of the number of tunnels that have been driven.

"INTRODUCTION In the present war, with increasing demands on foundrymen for speedy production of sound castings, the role of sand in foundries has paramount importance.Foundry sands include both molding sands and core sands. Molding sands are those used in making molds, whereas core sands include those used for ""cores"" that fill the parts of the mold intended to be openings or hollow spaces in the casting. Core sands are, as a general rule, relatively coarse-grained as compared to molding sands. Coarse-grained sands, however, are required in making molds for large castings.Owing to the intimate relationship between properties of the sand and casting defects, it is necessary (for most efficient foundry work) to keep a close check on the molding sands used and to properly select and prepare a sand for a specific job. A mold is essentially an unfired refractory composed to meet specific requirements as to strength, permeability, and resiliency. Good green strength is important in preparing and handling the mold. Low dry and hot strengths contribute to cutting and washing, whereas high strengths cause difficult shake-out, with subsequent loss of sand. When molten metal is poured into the mold: a dried skin is attained, and gases from moisture and combustibles are driven off. Excessive moisture necessary for the proper working of a sand, as well as poor venting due to low permeability, are factors responsible for producing such defects as blows and pinholing. The skin of the mold, upon contact with molten metal, first expands and later contracts; these conditions are favorable for producing scab defects. Contact with the molten metal sometimes causes the skin of the mold to sinter or fuse and may produce a sand burn on the casting. Then again, the mold may develop excessive hot strength rapidly, thereby causing a cracked casting. Experienced foundrymen can other such relationships, too numerous to be included here."

The Bureau of Mines in the Department of the Interior is increasingly concerned with the safety and health of personnel engaged in coal-mining operations, particularly below ground. The Bureau is also concerned with improving the utilization of domestic mineral resources, and reducing the environmental impact of mineral operations. One obvious way to improve safety and minimize health hazards would be to eliminate coal mining entirely by bringing the energy value of the coal to the surface in some other way, such as by partially burning it underground to form combustible gases and bringing these gases to the surface, where their energy content can be put to use. This technique might also improve the utilization of the coal resource. ? Accordingly, the Bureau of Mines, interested in re-evaluating underground coal gasification technology in terms of current and expected conditions in the United States, requested Arthur D. Little, Inc., (ADL) to appraise the technology to determine: ? Whether the current (1971) state of the technology offers a technically feasible method for gasifying coal underground that is applicable to the reserves of bituminous and lower rank coals in the United States. ? Whether a program of research and further development of the technology could ultimately make it a technically feasible alternative to current open-pit and underground coal mining operations. ? What the nature and cost of further research and development work in the technology should be.

This Bureau of Mines report summarizes the methods and results of many of the laboratory studies on spontaneous heating of coal published in the last 50 years. It includes a brief description of experimental methods, indices of combustibility, and important contributing factors. Adiabatic calorimetry, isothermal calorimetry, [0], sorption systems, or temperature differential are the most frequently used experimental methods. Indices of combustibility include various heating rates, crossing point temperature, ignition temperature, and CO index. Factors that affect the spontaneous heating of coal include air flow rate, changes in moisture content, particle size, rank, temperature, pyrite content, geological factors, and mining practice. Experimental conditions and results from 20 papers are summarized in an appendix, and the bibliography contains 45 references.

An advanced water-in-oil emulsion hydraulic fluid has been developed which meets defined laboratory performance criteria and which has given fully satisfactory results in a one-year underground mine test in two continuous miners. A novel method of monitoring fluid water content was demonstrated and incorporated into a test kit for use at or near the mine site. Test fluid fire resistance integrity as measured by the MSHA Schedule 30 procedure was maintained during the test and important fire resistance test variables identified.

The results of the 1921 cooperative experiments conducted by the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the University of North Dakota at the University mining substation plent at Hebron , North Dakota , pointed clearly to certain definite dep ficiencies in the schemes hitherto developed for benefiting and utilizing lignite . First The apparatus used in the carbonizing process or used to produce carbonized lignite suitable for briquetting is too costly , that is , the cost per ton day of residue made is too high . Second - The depreciation of the carbonizing appara tus is too high . Third The carbonizing apparatus can not be operated intermittently without seriously damaging it and impairing its efficiency of performance . Fourth Too little attention has been given to the possibility of using at least a certain percentage of the carbonized lignite directly in suitable stoves and furnaces without briquetting or other treatment . Accordingly , consideration was given to the design of an oven that could be built at a mine without the importation of highly skilled and specially trained construction men , erected at a low first cost , readily kept in a state of repair , operated at a rela tively high capacity and put into operation or shut down at will without seriously damaging the brickwork . The need of such an oven was appreciated also by the University of North Dakota and a cooperative agreement was made to build and operate such an oven during the summer of 1921.

This paper has been written to describe briefly the mining and milling of gold and silver ores in the Black Canyon and neighboring mining districts in Yavapai County, Ariz. The description of present operations is the result of a 10-day visit to the region by the writer in March 1936. ELECTROSTATIC methods are used to separate and concentrate or purify granular particles derived from ores or various synthetic and agricultural products. Compared with other separation methods that require many technological refinements, the electrostatic attraction of fibers, grass, and seeds to charged surfaces clan be accomplished under the most primitive circumstances, and the early development of this method of beneficiation seemed very promising. Precise application of the method to provide high selectivity, however, is a complex procedure, and interest in this method declined. During this period Mr. O. C. Ralston initiated a Bureau of Mines research program oil electrostatic separation. It is the purpose of thins publication to describe the development of the electrostatic method of particle separation from the early beginning to the present resurgence of interest. Most of the information for this description bas been derived from references, a few of which were not available for thorough review. Much information has been drawn from the investitions of the Bureau. Acknowledgments Mr. O. C. Ralston, former Chief metallurgist of the Bureau of Mines, began the research program on the subject and did research on the mils literature. Both Mr. Ralston and Mr. H. B. Johnson, former president of the Huff Electrostatic Separator Co., furnished patent references. A critical review by Mr. F. D. Lamb, Research director, and Mr. M. J. Approximately 1,000 specific recommendations for research and development are summarized in a systematic and comprehensive format appropriate for review by mining research and development program managers. Relevant Bureau of Mines research programs are briefly described and some opportunities for future research and development are identified.

This report, based on information made available by four uranium-producing companies, describes the geology, exploration, open-pit development and mining, and shaft sinking in the Gas Hills uranium district of Wyoming. Open-pit stripping features motor-scrapers push-loaded by crawler or rubber-tired tractors. The ground generally can be ripped, and little blasting is necessary. Detailed data are given on grouting for ground stabilization in sinking a small-diameter shaft in the relatively unconsolidated sandstone and siltstone, Cost and performance data are presented as made available by the companies.

The Bureau of Mines and the Alabama Power Co., jointly, conducted the first experiment undertaken in the United States in underground gasification of coal in place, at Gorgas, Ala. Milton H. Fies, manager of coal operations, Alabama Power Co., proposed the cooperative investigation to Arno C. Fieldner, chief, Fuels and Explosives Branch, Bureau of Mines; and assisted in supervising the experiment. The objectives of the experiment were to determine whether coal in place could be burned successfully and whether the burning could be controlled; the effect of the fire on the coal bed and the overlying strata; and the yield and quality of gas that could be obtained.

In 1948 the United States became a net importer of oil. Coupled with an unpre- cedented domestic production of 5,900,000 barrels daily, imports approximating 500,000 barrels made available a total supply of 6,400,000 barrels a day. Thus, by herculean effort, the oil industry was able to meet an extraordinary demand at home and, in addition, to ship abroad almost 400,00 barrels daily of petroleum and products. The country's oil position now differs greatly from that prevailing at the be- ginning of World War II. Then, actual oil production averaged about 4 million bar- rels a day, and productive capacity probably was greater than 5 million barrels a day. As the demand of the military and industrial machine grew with the rising tempo of the drive toward victory, the United States not only met its own needs but pro- duced about two-thirds of the total oil requirements of the Allied Nations, excluding Russia. As a people, we can be deeply grateful that the Nation's petroleum resources were adequate and sufficiently developed to support such a tremendous effort. Even in those critical hours when immediate needs were the paramount issues, a prudent Congress paused to contemplate the importance of an assured long-term supply of liquid fuels. From these deliberations came the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act of 1944, which authorized research and development work on new sources of oil coal, oil shale, and agricultural and forestry products. ce World War II, a civilian demand for 6 million barrels of petroleum prod- ucts has become the order of the day every day. By drilling as many as 39,000 new wells a year, the production rate has been increased enough to meet domestic require- ments by a bare margin. Some imports were necessary, however, to fill both domestic and foreign demands, and these doubtless will increase. Is this policy of exploration within the United States and the development of oil in foreign countries adequate insurance for the fulfillment of our future national needs? This question has two aspects one purely civilian and economic in character and the other significant from the standpoint of our national defense. There are now approximately 4,000 producing oil fields in this country. At first thought, it would appear that production could decline in a considerable number of these fields without materially affecting the over-all daily output. However, 48 percent of the oil comes from only 111 major fields which contain 50 percent of the total proved domestic reserves. It is apparent, then, that the flow from large fields - having proved reserves of 100 million barrels or more each must be sustained if daily production is to be kept at the present levels. Essentially, this means that new major fields must be discovered about as rapidly or perhaps more rapidly than the older ones lose productive capacity. From 1940 through 1947, only eight major fields with estimated reserves of more than 100 million barrels each, were discovered and proved - an average of one such field a year. The total estimated reserve of these eight fields was less than 1 year's supply at the present rate of use. As drilling continues, some existing fields ultimately will prove reserves larger than those now known. Without a pronounced increase in the num- ber of major discoveries, however, the prospects for increasing our present productive level are not encouraging. Any gap that appears between domestic productive capacity and demand could be filled with supplies from proved oil resources abroad. A 3-month study in 1971 of the Essen Roof Support and Rock Mechanics Research Center's program of roof and support evaluation included 25 mine trips. German miners must adopt mining methods and environmental control measures involving methane drainage and water infusion to improve productivity under severe natural conditions. Pressing problems in ground control must be solved such as cavities in front and above the supports at longwall faces and excessive convergence in gate roads. The Center developed automatic data processing methods to quantify the results of roof and support surveys and to establish criteria. Another approach to ground control is the study of mine models. The Center's laboratory has the facilities to test elements of powered roof support and whole assembled units. Face automation and roof control by powered shields are novel developments that are under close scrutiny in the field as well as in the laboratory. Though the Essen Center's roof and support evaluation techniques are tailored to the needs of the coal mining industry of the Federal Republic of Germany under conditions vastly different from those in the United States, some application may be found here, for instance, monitoring faces and roadways and preventive maintenance of hydraulic systems.

Airblasts have been monitored at four coal strip mines and at a limestone quarry. Thirty-seven production blasts have been monitored with three seismographs, resulting in one hundred and eleven complete air pressure records. Instrumentation selection use is described. Data analysis includes an assessment of the predictability of peak overpressures by means of the cube root scaled distance law. It is found that predictability for the cases studied here is not good. An extensive discussion of possible explanations is included. A detailed analysis of the frequency content of the observed airblasts, of considerable importance in evaluating potential annoyance problems, has been made for all records. A computer program has been written to simulate airblasts induced by multiple-hole blasts. A series of small experimental blasts have been detonated and monitored in order to allow an assessment of the program. It is clear that airblasts, especially when induced by very small charges and monitored at very close distances, are highly sensitive to detonation times. Retrofitting of airblast records occasionally was possible, but considerably improved field work is required to validate or refute the computer model.
