From the chemist's point of view it would be ideal if specifications for coke for any stated purpose could be written on the basis of chemical composition and burning characteristics. Unfortunately this is not possible. In fact, the physical properties of a coke are often of such major importance as to render any specified chemical requirements totally inadequate to show the quality of coke desired. For example, a furnace coke may admirably fill all chemical requirements, such as for low phosphorus, sulphur, moisture, and high fixed carbon, and still be too soft to support the burden of the furnace without excessive crushing. Again, a domestic coke though a good fuel as judged from Chemical analysis, may be of unmarketable size. Thus one can not define the quality of a coke for a specified purpose without taking into account both its chemical and physical characteristics even when this has been done the specification may fail because neither coke user nor producer can accurately define by quantitative tests the qualities most desired. In other words, there is need of accurate test methods for measuring the properties of coke and, what is equally important, for correlating the results with the behavior of the coke in use. Coke quality is determined by the kind of coal used, the coking process, and the type of equipment used in the coking process. Chemical analysis of the coals, together with small-scale coking tests, will give a good indication of their suitability; but, in general, coke must be produced on an industrial scale and tested in the equipment for which it is intended before conclusive information as to its quality is obtained.

A study was conducted by the Bureau of Mines to determine problems associated with the use of ferrous fractions from urban refuse as melting stock for steelmaking and to evaluate the resulting steel products. The study involved 50-pound ingots from laboratory melts and 50-pound ingots from 1-ton electric-arc-furnace melts. The 50 pound ingots from the laboratory melts and the arc-furnace melts were hot rolled to provide material for mechanical and corrosion testing. Results obtained in the study include the following: Most steels rolled successfully and exhibited acceptable surface and edge condition. Tensile strengths of the plain carbon steels were not significantly affected by copper up to concentrations of 0.65 pct and were not affected by tin content up to 0.16 pct. Yield strength increased with increasing copper and tin contents, and impact strength decreased with increasing tin content. Hardness increased slightly with increasing copper content. In general, properties of the steel produced were not measurably affected by charge composition (that is, melting stock), melting practice, or method of scrap preparation.

The countries of Asia and the Pacific have large resources of diverse minerals. Australia and China have extensive mineralization that are commercially being exploited. The major minerals in Australia with known reserves adequate for both domestic demand and export markets include bauxite, clays, copper, diamond, gold, iron ore, lead, manganese, mineral sands (titanium minerals), nickel, salt, silver, tin, uranium, and zinc. China is the world leader in proven reserves of antimony, barite, magnesite, molybdenum, rare earths, titanium (ilmenite), tungsten, and vanadium. It also has about 55 billion tons of iron ore, albeit with an average grade of only 30 % to 35 % elemental iron content. With the exception of chromium and copper, China has significant resources of a wide array of minerals and metals, based on its production and/or export capability for these commodities. Additionally, India has significant resources of bauxite and mineral sands; Indonesia, bauxite, copper, nickel, and tin; Malaysia, tin and associated titanium; Mongolia, copper, fluorspar, and lead-zinc; New Caledonia, nickel; New Zealand, gold and iron sand; North Korea, magnesite; Papua New Guinea, copper, gold and mineral sands; Philippines, copper, chromite, and gold; and Sri Lanka, gemstones. Moreover, there appears to be extensive mineralization III Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam, but they have yet to be definitively delineated.

Control shearer-generated airborne respirable dust on longwall mining sections. Approach Previous Bureau studies have shown that using high-pressure water can have a significant impact on the amount of airborne dust released into the face airflow while cleaning and controlling the airflow in the immediate cutting zone. The basic concept to improve the drum water spray system was to utilize high-pressure (1,200 psi) inward-facing drum sprays to improve the dust knockdown efficiency of the spray system and confine the dust to the face area. This system would minimize the exposure of the shearer operator through dust avoidance and decrease face dust levels by suppressing the amount of respirable dust that becomes airborne. System Design In-mine tests were designed to provide information that would permit evaluation of the operation with different spray orientations and water spray pressures. This was achieved by comparison with a conventional baseline wet-cutting system consisting of 26 low-pressure bit sprays, located on the hit blocks to provide pick-point flushing. Total drum water flow was 60 gpm and was maintained continuously throughout all tests. The high-pressure inward-facing drum water spray system consisted of sprays located in each bit block, oriented 15° and 30° toward the face. The inward-facing water spray system was operated at either 800 or 1,200 psi.

The performance of electrical grounding systems in open-pit metal mines is evaluated, using techniques which are described thoroughly. The normal electrical distribution and grounding practices used in metallic open-pit mines are reviewed and compared with coal mine usage. The results are used to generate the included recommendations for Federal Regulations concerning open-pit metal mine grounding systems.

"INTRODUCTION The reduction of washery losses of marketable coal is a phase of coal preparation important to many of the Alabama coal producers. The problem has wide scope, and this report deals with but one of its several aspects. The investigation on which this report is based was made by the Southern Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines with the cooperation of the Alabama By-products Corporation and the University of Alabama. The Alabama Byproducts Corporation provided samples of table middlings from its Colta washery on the Mary Lee bed at Flat Creek, Ala.PRACTICE AT THE COLTA WASHYAt Colta run-of-mine coal is crushed in a hammer mill in closed circuit with 5/16-inch square-mesh vibrating screens and tabled without classification on eight rectangular-deck wet tables. The coal is more friable than the bone normally present, and hence the bone is concentrated in the coarser sizes. An unclassified feed of this character can not be tabled with high efficiency to low ash content because of the sizing action of a concentrating table, which is such that when the tables are adjusted to exclude the coarse bone from the washed coal, a large amount of fine coal is lost in the middlings. At the time this investigation was undertaken there was no market outlet for middlings, with the result that middling products had to be discarded with the refuse."

Develop design and support guidelines for coal mine entry intersections based upon results of integrated field and numerical modeling analyses of structural parameters for improving ground stability. Background Underground coal mines contain a large number of entry intersections. Dome-shaped zones over the intersections are unstable and are often associated with roof falls. These roof falls may occur during mine development, trapping equipment and endangering miners. These high-risk areas of the mine account for 10 pct of the total number of ground-failure-caused fatalities. The falls, ranging from heights of 1 to 20 ft, cause high dilution and slow the advance rates. Stability at intersections is influenced by four structurally interrelated parameters: in situ stress, geological discontinuities and physical properties, intersection geometry, and roof span. Because of the complex interaction of these parameters, the actual mechanism of roof failure may vary considerably, depending upon the roof lithology, rock strength, and stress conditions.

The Kroll-Betterton process for debismuthizing lead is based on adding calcium and magnesium to impure molten bullion to form solid Ca-Mg-Bi inter-metallic compounds that float on the surface as drosses. Present practice in industry is to hand-skim off these drosses, often followed by hydraulic pressing to squeeze out some of the entrapped liquid lead. In an effort to develop an improved technique, the use of an argon-shrouded dipping centrifuge to perform the required phase separation was investigated. Centrifugation experiments demonstrated that the bismuth content of an impure bullion could be lowered from an initial 0.5 percent down to 0.03 percent with a lead recovery of 90 percent, which is comparable to lead recovery after hand skimming of drosses in commercial lead-debismuthizing operations. Centrifugation provides better control in removing drosses, faster operation with less oxidation and relatively little fuming, and recovery of a lead bullion that approaches commercial specifications.

Provide a portable crushing capability to keep conveyor haulage close to the working face and permit more efficient and safer ore handling in low headroom, hardrock mines. Approach A readily portable jaw crusher is used which meets machine size, feed rock size, product size, and throughput requirements for low headroom, hardrock mines. How It Works The crusher is mounted on wheels to expedite frequent moves and to allow crushing of mined rock or ore near the working face. The crushed product is then placed on conveyor belts that are ex-tended as the crusher is moved. Keeping crushing and conveyor haulage near the face minimizes the haulage distances for trucks and loaders. Loading and haulage of run-of-mine ore is frequently the highest operational cost in underground mines. These costs can be significantly reduced by use of a belt conveyor, which is a common practice in coal and other soft mineral mines. The new low-profile hard rock crusher gives the same advantage of extensive belt haulage capabilities to low headroom, hardrock mines. The low-profile crusher will accept feed up to 30 inches when operating under 11 feet of headroom. The headroom required for crusher operation was reduced by tilting the jaws, feeding the crusher horizontally, and placing the eccentric shaft at the back or in a horizontal plane with the jaws. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) evaluated microseismic activity from three field sites to compare and contrast the characteristics of microseismic emissions from very different geologic, stress, and mining environments. Recently, NIOSH has embarked on a research program to evaluate the use of microseismic monitoring information to identify roof fall failure processes and to assess its potential to warn of unstable roof conditions. Large roof instabilities, such as roof falls and certain roof caving events, have proven difficult to anticipate representing an increased risk to miners working in these inherently hazardous areas. When local failure processes are better understood, appropriate control measures can be engineered to mitigate these hazards. This study used microseismic emissions to help identify three local rock failure processes. It was also shown that analysis of microseismic emissions can aid in assessing the degree of instability associated with these local rock failure processes.

As part of an overall goal to develop technology that can maintain an adequate supply of minerals to meet national economic and strategic needs, the Bureau of Mines is evaluating a method for selectively extracting nickel and cobalt from low-grade domestic laterites. The method involves electrowinning to recover the metals in pure form; therefore, preliminary laboratory-scale electrowinning tests were conducted in both a nondiaphragm and a diaphragm cell to determine the effect of variables on energy efficiency under controlled conditions. Electrolytes were generally reagent-grade sulfate solutions that were prepared to simulate electrolyte that could be obtained by stripping nickel-and cobalt-rich solvent extraction reagents. Limited tests were conducted with electrolyte generated from laterite leach solutions. Electrical energy consumption in a nondiaphragm cell was 2.06 kwhr/lb Ni with the cell operated at 50° C, a cell feed of 90 g/l Ni, a pH of 3.5, an extraction of 3.2 g/l, and a cathode current density of 20 amp/ft2. The energy requirement decreased with increasing concentration and temperature, and increased with increasing. extraction and current density. At 50° C, energy consumption in the nondiaphragm cell was 21 pct greater than in the diaphragm cell, but it was only 5 pet greater at 65° C. For this reason and because of overall cost considerations, operation at 65° C with the nondiaphragm cell was preferred. Smooth sheets of cobalt were obtained by electrowinning in a nondiaphragm cell at selected temperatures from 50° to 85° C and with cobalt concentrations from 55 to 87 g/l. The energy consumption (1.48 kwhr/lb) was 22 pet lower with a cobalt concentration of 75 g/l and a cell temperature of 65° C than with a cobalt concentration of 55 g/l and a cell temperature of 50° C.

"INTRODUCTION An exposure of large beryl crystals in pegmatite on Beryl Mountain, in Sullivan County, N. H., was the basis for investigation by the Bureau of Mines to determine the extent of the beryl mineralization and to expose other parts of the same zone that were favorable for additional beryl-rich shoots. Testing by surface cuts, trenching, and tunneling was conducted by the Bureau of Mines from August to December 1943.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to the national security and economy. Design a model health and safety program which, when implemented, can improve mine safety by reducing occupational injuries and accidents. Approach The Bureau of Mines developed a model program which identifies the elements essential to the effectiveness of health and safety programs designed for mining operations, and is readily adaptable to all types of sizes of mines. The model program primarily provides training on loss control and accident investigation and technical assistance with health and safety problems. In order to assess the effectiveness of the program, it was tested at both a coal and gold mining operation. Monthly statistics were generated to reflect the number of occupational injuries and accidents, and the severity of injuries (as measured by the number of work days lost during recovery). Observations were made of employees performing a large number of randomly selected jobs in order to estimate. the proportion of the workforce that was working in the presence of one or more of three types of safety deficiencies: Type A-individual job performance deficiencies which could be corrected by the employee alone I e.g., an employee is seen not wearing a seatbelt.

The initial results from the magnetic sludge factorial experiment are summarized in Table 2. For ease in interpretation, the four separate variables are identified with the high and low level of each variable being represented by + and - signs, respectively. Several important relationships are evident from an inspection of the data in Table 2. For example, magnetic sludges were obtained only during the high temperature tests. Secondly, with the exception of the last three tests, there is an apparent correlation between settled sludge volume (or sludge settling rate) and pH. Data on residual dissolved Fee+ indicate that precipitation of iron is not complete at pH 8 and room temperature (Tests l, 3, 5, and 7). Although this should not have any confounding effect on the interpretation of the results, it is an important observation and an aspect of the overall conceptual process that should be considered carefully during any future developmental work. The data in Table 2 were employed more fully in the calculation of main effects and variable interactions for each of the three responses. For this purpose, a codified design and calculation matrix, shown in Table 3, was used. The derivation of this matrix is described by Davies.(9) The positive or negative signs for variable interactions are obtained simply by algebraic multiplication of the signs for each single variable involved in the interaction. Main effects and interactions are calculated by multiplying the response values (Table 2) by the corresponding effect elements (Table 3), summing the results, and dividing by 8. The resulting value for single variables is also sometimes designated as an average effect, since (for tyro levels of the variable only) it is simply the difference between the average response of all trials carried out at the first level of the variable (factor) and that of all trials at the second level. If the effect of one variable changes at different levels of another variable, the two variables are said to interact. The relative importance of the variable or variables in question is reflected by the absolute magnitude of the calculated main effect or interaction. First-order (two variable) interactions are usually easy to interpret in terms of the physical behavior of the system. Second- and higher-order interactions are often less readily understood, and are often of minor significance in any case. Develop a means for analyzing seismic crosshole data to predict and monitor the Flow of leach solution during in situ mining. Background Improvements in predicting and monitoring in situ leach solution flow would aid in planning well field configurations. These improvements would also facilitate permit application by assuring regulatory agencies that leach solution would not escape from a well field undetected. Seismic tomography can detect fractured zones, which enables the prediction of probable flow paths, and it is a promising technique for monitoring leach solution injected above the water table. Tomographic analysis of crosshole seismic data provides a two-dimensional picture of the distribution of seismic velocities between the transmitter and receiver boreholes. The positions of fractured zones and of leach solution can then be inferred from the seismic velocities.

This report describes a study designed to evaluate a proposed modification in the cap lamp battery cord intented to reduce the incidence of snagging and catching of the cord. A three phase evaluation as performed comparing a prototype with the standard, currently available cord. First, a "pull test" equipment was run. The second evaluation was a body conformity study. The third evaluation involved subjects performing common tasks in a low seam coal mine simulator. The results of these evaluations clearly demonstrated significant safety advantages of incorporating coiled cord into the design of the cap cord. The coil cord presented less of a snagging hazard, allowed the wearer more time to respond to a snag, and transmitted lower levels of force to the helmet when snagged. The research team recommended that cap lamp cords be commercially developed which incorporate coiled cord at the battery and helmet.

[Thermodynamic properties of two amphibole asbestos minerals were determined by the Bureau of Mines. The enthalpies of formation were determined by the hydrofluoric acid solution calorimetry method. Heat capacity measurements were made with an adiabatic calorimeter over the range of 5 to 315 K. High-temperature enthalpies above 298 K were determined with a copper-block drop calorimeter to 852 K for amosite and to 902 K for crocidolite. Thermodynamic data determined for amosite of the composition Fe5+2.2766Mg1.5209 Fe+03.12Mn0.0825) Si7.9163Al0.0837022.0363)(OH)1.9637 are: S°298 = 168.8 ± 5 cal/deg-mole; ?Hf°298-15 (elements) = -2419.24 ± 2.95 kcal/mole; ?Hf298.15 (oxides) = -30.92 ± 2.47 kcal/mole; and ?Gf° -2260.1 kcal. Corresponding data found for s3 ,1s = crocidolite of the composition (Na1.9Ca0.1)(Fe2+.024Fe2.5 01Mg0.475) (Si7.9713024Fe+2 2.501Mg0.475) (Si7.971 Al0.029022.095) (OH)1.905 are: S2.98-15 - 161.1 ± 4 cal/deg-mole; ?Rf° 2 298.15 (elements) = -2433.56 ± 2.99 kcal/mole, 10298.1s (oxides) = -87.69 1.70 kcal/mole, and ?Gf°298.15 = -2269.8 kcal.] Calorimetric values from this investigation were combined with other data from the literature to calculate the Gibbs energies of formation and equilibrium constants of formation over the temperature range of the measurements. Tables of enthalpies of formation and Gibbs energies of formation are given as a function of temperature both from the elements and the constituent oxides.

This list of organizations that conduct research and development programs on coal has been compiled by the Bureau of Mines with the thought that such a directory may provide a useful guide to worldwide research efforts in the areas designated and may facilitate communication between organizations with similar interests. This list includes government, university, private, and commercial organizations. Many of these groups are conducting comparatively modest but often particularly interesting or specialized investigations. The areas of investigation have been defined in a broad manner--these include analysis and constitution, mining and geology, preparation, combustion, briquetting, high- and low-temperature carbonization, gasification, hydrogenation, Fischer-Tropsch, and health and safety. In some instances such information is not available, but the names of the organizations themselves often indicate immediate arias of interest. Special publications issued by and describing the work of each organization have been cited, when known; almost all of the organizations also publish results of their investigations in the technical press. Several foreign technical and trade publications that include such information and are not published directly by any of the organizations listed are cited in the pages following the list of organizations in each country. This list is not complete. Information that would improve coverage and/or accuracy will be welcomed by the Bureau of Mines.

Develop a user-friendly, personal computer-based numerical modeling program that performs structural analyses of underground tabular deposits, making these readily available to the mining industry. Background When ore is extracted from an underground mine, the overburden weight is redistributed to unmined areas, recompacted gob zones, and artificial structures such as packwalls and/or cribs. This redistribution of stresses continually changes throughout the mining cycle and can be especially complicated when multiple-seam mining is involved. Numerical mine structural analysis methods provide a way of calculating the redistribution of overburden stresses and the resulting loading for any given area of an underground mine, thus enabling engineers to design safer and more productive mines. In 1973 Crouch and Fairhurst developed a mine structural analysis computer program called MINSIM. This computer program was based on the three-dimensional displacement-discontinuity approach, a subvariation of the boundary-element method. In 1979 Sinha expanded MINSIM's capability to provide an analysis of parallel multiple seams. Sinha called his program MULSIM. During 1984 and 1985, the Bureau of Mines upgraded and completely restructured MULSIM into what is now called MULSIM/BM.
