"INTRODUCTION The wartime demand for iron ore and alloy steel on the west coast revived interest in iron reserves in western United States and Alaska. Magnetite was known to have been the most abundant metallic mineral at some of the old copper mines on Prince of Wales Island. In the summer of 1942, the Bureau of Mines began a program of preliminary investigation followed by core-drilling two magnetite deposits on the island.The Poor Man iron deposit on Kasaan Peninsula, Prince of Wales Island, Southeastern Alaska, was examined in August 1942 by Robert L. Thorne, associate mining engineer of the Bureau of Mines, and John C. Reed and B. N. Goddard, geologists of the Federal Geological Survey in September 1942 the area was mapped geologically and a magnetic survey was made by the Geological Survey. In October and November 1942, a more thorough preliminary examination, which included cleaning out and sampling old adits and trenches, was made by thesenior author, Robert L. Thorne, and Aner W. Erickson, engineers of the Bureau. J. G. Shepherd, a consultant of the Bureau, spent two weeks in March and April 1943 investigating the Poor Man and other deposits on Kasaan Peninsula. Core drilling was completed in June 1943.L. A. Warner, of the Geological Survey, examined all cores and interpreted structural data revealed by the drilling."

"The increasing realization of the fire hazards involved in the use of wooden shingles caused the National Lumber Manufacturers' Association to beginsome five years ago a search for a suitable fire-resistant paint. The problem was submitted to the Educational Bureau of the Paint Manufacturers' Association of the United States and work was started by Mr. Henry L. Gardner at the Institute of Industrial Research, Washington D.C. in collaboration with Dr. Herman von Schrenk, a timber expert of St. Louis.The results of this,work have been described by Heckel, in ""Asbestos"", (Heckel G.B., Asbestos in the Paint Industry, Asbestos, Vol. 2, July, 1920,pp.- 5-10).,,who gives the following formula for one of the colors as typical: It will be noted from this formula that ""asbestine"" forms 33% of the total liquid pigment by weight or 31.8% of the solid constituents. Hockel in the article referred to describes this paint,as ""asbestiform"" and assumes since ""asbestine"" is magnesium silicate it must be the chrysetile variety of ""Asbestine"", however, is not asbestos but is a trade name for a fibrous variety of talc mined in the Gouverneur district, St. Lawrence County, New York. This rather natural error persists through the article and credits asbestos with many desirable properties which are characteristics of talc."

In 1987, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the 334-acre Mountain Lakes Wilderness Study Area (OR-011-001) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area is located in Klamath County about 15 miles northwest of Klamath Falls, Oregon, and is adjacent to the Mountain Lakes Wilderness. The area is underlain by Pliocene-age basaltic andesite. No mining districts are in the study area nor were any claims recorded or found. There are no oil and gas lease applications. There are no identified mineral resources in the study area. INTRODUCTION This report describes the USBM (U.S. Bureau of Mines) portion of a cooperative study with the USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) to evaluate mineral resources and potential of the Mountain Lakes WSA (Wilderness Study Area), at the request of the BLM (U.S. Bureau of Land Management). The USBM examines individual mines, prospects, claims, and mineralized zones, and evaluates identified mineral and energy resources. The USGS evaluates potential for undiscovered resources based on areal geological, geochemical, and geophysical surveys. Results of the investigations will be used to help determine the suitability of the WSA for inclusion into the National Wilderness Preservation System. Although the immediate goal of this and other USBM mineral surveys is to provide data for the President, Congress, government agencies, and the public for land-use decisions, the long-term objective is to ensure the Nation has an adequate and dependable supply of minerals at reasonable cost.

Domestic cobalt resources are relatively large, but low grade. The full potential for cobalt production from domestic sources is at least 19.4 million lb of cobalt per year exclusive of offshore resources. A summary of the cobalt processing technologies for the major domestic resources is presented in this Bureau of Mines report. The processing technologies for the Blackbird, Madison Nine, Duluth Gabbro, iron ore pyrite, laterites, and manganese sea nodules are nearly complete, but the economics are not favorable. Research on these resources should be limited to approaches that promise to cut the total processing costs by at least 50 pct. The most promising sources of cobalt are the spent copper leach solutions and siegenite from the Missouri lead ores. Research on cobalt processing from these two sources needs to be completed.

Underground coal winning operations can broadly be classified as conventional, continuous, and longwall mining. In conventional mining, the operations of cutting, drilling, blasting, loading and hauling, and roof support are performed in that sequence in each working face in a work area. The major difference between continuous and conventional mining is that the coal is cut and loaded by a continuous miner in the former, thereby combining the unit operations of cutting, drilling, shooting, and loading into one. Longwall applications have been viewed with great interest in recent years, and although at the end of 1970 there were only 37 longwall installations in the U. S. with combined production of less than 4 percent of underground total, there is no question about the growth potential of longwall in the United States. Increased capacity, versatility, and power characterize continuous miners today. Although continuous miners have outsold conventional gathering-arm type loading machines for some years, the latter, in the new extra-high capacity types, are continuing to find wide use. Whether the mining system is continuous or conventional, the haulage units may include six-wheel articulated shuttle cars, tractor-trailer units, or extensible belt and bridge-conveyor systems, all tending to increase the productivity of the face units. The decision as to which to choose - continuous or conventional mining - is complicated, and both systems are capable of high production rates. Cement kiln dust (CKD) is a waste product generated at the rate of 4 to 12 million tons per year in the United States. The dust has considerable resource potential as a neutralizer for coal mine waste effluents and as a lime substitute in the agriculture and construction industries. However, little information has been published on the composition and characteristics of CKD, and a concern arose over the potential environmental effects of the waste when an analysis of a single sample from West Germany revealed lead and zinc concentrations of 5,620 µg/g and 16,200 µg/g, respectively. "Bit wear presents problems to mining operations because it affects both productivity and economics. Most bit research deals with energy requirements and energy dissipation mechanics for ideal fragmentation during the cutting process.Mechanical cutting leads to dust generation. Past studies involving dust generation due to bit wear concluded that dust concentrations increased considerably after a 7% bit weight loss: leading researchers recommend that the bits be changed at that point.Bit wear is affected by three factors: machine operating parameters in-situ mining conditions and rock properties. Operating parameters such as the depth of cut tool material spray position and the drum's rotating velocity are very important and have a definite impact on bit wear.During the mining process the amount of rock in coal and the strength of that rock is important as abrasion and adhesion take affect. Diffusive wear or deformation becomes dominant only when the temperatures exceed critical. Temperatures rise as a function of drum velocity rock properties and the cutting tool itself.Miner bit surveyIn this study, 15 mines were surveyed, and of those six responded for nine seams. The survey reflected a wide range of information about coal production and bit consumption from continuous miner sections. Also used bits were collected to get first-hand information to analyze wear."

Available statistics on 1991 worldwide consumption of selected non fuel mineral commodities shown in table 12 indicate downturns for all but 3 of the 15 listed commodities. It should be stressed that in most instances, the consumption declines were primarily the result of lower levels of use in the former U.S.S.R. and the former centrally planned economy nations of Eastern Europe. However, several commodities suffered use cutbacks in market economy countries. In the case of the nonferrous metals covered In the table, the differences in performance between market economy countries and the former centrally planned economy states are immediately evident from the table itself. Among these important commodities, refined lead, primary magnesium, and refined tin registered downturns for market economy countries as well as among the centrally planned economy countries. Also notably, cadmium use showed no significant change from 1990 levels in either group of countries. Global consumption of iron ore fell by 3.4 % or about 31 million tons, and this was a greater decline than that logged for production of marketable iron ore and related products, which was down by only 3.0% or almost 28.2 million tons. Thus, it would seem that for another year there was a net addition to stocks. The 1991 drop in iron and steel scrap use was about 5.5 % or about 18 million tons, on the percentage basis somewhat greater than the 4.8% or 36.9 million ton drop in global steel production. Although consumption of iron ore and iron and steel scrap are not broken down by region in table 12, it seems almost assured that the pattern of 1990 continued into 1991: drops in use in the former U.S.S.R. and Eastern Europe were the overwhelmingly dominant declines and accounted for much, although not all, of the global decline, whereas among market economy countries as a group, there were upturns for both materials. On a global basis, it would appear that the slight shift in the ratio of pig iron to scrap in steel furnace charges noted in 1990 continued into 1991, this shift being toward a slightly larger proportion of pig iron with a corresponding decline in the share accounted for by scrap.

The Great Eastern nickel deposit is located in the western foothills of the Virgin Mountains in the Copper King or Bunkerville district situated in the southeastern part of Clark County, Nev. It is covered by a group of eight claims that can be reached by turning south from U. S. Highway 91 at Riverside, Nev., and driving about 12.6 miles southeast over a winding mountain road, which rises from about 3,000 feet to 4,000 feet in elevation. The climate is dry, with only a small amount of rainfall throughout the year. The temperature ranges from hot during the summer to short periods of freezing weather during the winter months. The vegetation is of the desert variety, and no timber is available for mining. Water for mining purposes would have to be pumped from lower areas. A granitoid gneiss comprises the largest part of the rock outcrops. It has a steeply dipping foliation that strikes about N. 75° E. The gneiss was intruded by basic dikes, which in turn were intruded by pegmatite dikes. The ore occurs as lenticular bodies formed by the convergence of several pegmatite dikes within the main dike. The principal sulfide minerals are pyrite, pyrrhotite, and chalcopyrite, which contain a small amount of nickel. Late in the year of 1939, the Bureau of Mines undertook an exploration project on the Great Eastern property to extend or delimit the known mineralization. Underground work, consisting of 590 feet of drifting and crosscutting, was completed in September 1940, and 1,091 feet of diamond, drilling for downward extension of an ore body in the Lower edit, which was completed in February 1941.

This paper introduces a technique for incorporating employee participation into the prevention component of a contingency plan. Companies sometimes focus so much energy on response that they forget to put resources into the basics of emergency prevention. The training program discussed here was designed to make employees part of the prevention system. Examples of training materials from the program are provided, a sample method for introducing risk assessment to employees is shown, and a strategy to address limited training time using short videos is explained. Methods for tailoring the training to any worksite and for specific risks are also included. The program is being designed and tested by the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory/NIOSH and employees of an underground coal mine. Examples are taken from the implementation of the program at the mine during the summer and fall of 1998. Results of the program evaluation and lessons learned during the implementation are discussed.

Objective To improve seats on mine shuttle cars with ergonomic design and by reducing shock impact transmitted through the mine vehicle seat to the vehicle operator. Background Operators of underground mobile equipment, particularly shuttle cars, are often exposed to significant levels of shock and whole-body vibration. Past studies have reported that as many as one-third of underground equipment operators could be exposed to adverse levels of shock and whole-body vibration. Moreover, seats on mining equipment, historically, are inadequate relative to the ergonomic needs of the equipment operator. In the extreme, amine vehicle seat has sometimes consisted of blocks of wood or a bent steel plate bolted to the machine frame. Also, the lack of sufficient vertical clearance in some underground mines is an impediment to providing adequate shock isolation systems on mine equipment seats. Approach The NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Center (PRC) is conducting research with viscoelastic foams to improve seats on mine shuttle cars. Viscoelastic foams were used in an ergonomically designed seat to reduce the amount of shock transmitted through the mine vehicle seat to the vehicle operator. Data on selected viscoelastic foams were analyzed from laboratory shock tests at PRC. Using information from the analysis, two ergonomic seats incorporating selected foam were constructed for in-mine testing on a shuttle car (Joy 21SC) in eastern Kentucky. The shuttle car operated in a 35-in-thick coal seam with an approximate mining height of 43 in. Operational data were recorded on the ergonomic and original seats. Further, the shuttle car operator was asked to compare these seats. Results When comparing the original seat (figure 1) with the ergonomic seat (figure 2), the shuttle car operator described the ergonomic seat as generally “much better” than the original seat. The operator explained. “It’s just easy to adjust. And it’s got the lower lumbar support. And the pad is thicker. It’s just much better all the way around.” He added, “It does support you more and [there is] less shock when you hit a hole...I liked the lower lumbar support. That’s where most of your shock is at, in your lower back.” The operational data supported the operator’s comments. In the full-load case, significant improvements in isolation were achieved(down to 15 Hz) with the ergonomic seat. Additional laboratory testing of seven viscoelastic foams was done to further improve the level of isolation from shock and better characterize the material properties of each foam. Data from this testing were used in an analytical model of the seat pan isolation system. Results showed that two of the viscoelastic foams, SUN-MATE EXTRA-SOFT and PUDGEE, gave the most effective shock isolation of the seven materials tested. A composite of EXTRA-SOFT and PUDGEE foams improved the isolation characteristics of the seat pan to approximately 4 Hz. Similarly, EXTRA-SOFT by itself provided isolation to 5 Hz. These results will be validated with future in-mine measurements. Cooperative Research Opportunity NIOSH is seeking cooperators to assist in further research and development of this technology. "To help evaluate the vibration patterns of an excised lung, a method is developed to determine which parts of the surface of an excised lung are responding to acoustic excitation via the trachea. Holographic interferometry, a very' sensitive technique ·that can measure movements of a few microns, is used to detect the lung surface movements.The intact lung and heart are excised from Long· Evans male rats weighing 250 gm. A tube is inserted into the trachea and connected via a funnel to a 3 inch cone speaker. The assembly is positioned in the holographic unit and excited at frequencies up to 10,000 Hz. The holographic unit contains an acousto-optic shutter used with a 0.5 watt Argon laser.The resulting reconstructed holograms contain interference fringes that are indicated of lung surface vibration.INTRODUCTIONA 1986 report by the U.S. National Committee on Biomechanics [1] describes diseases of the lung as a major national health problem. One of the recommendations of the report is for continued study of the mechanical properties of lung tissue. As an example, the report cites at least three areas that would benefit from a better understanding of the vibratory patterns or the lung."

This report describes magnetic field measurements in the Helvetia Coal Co. Lucene #8 Mine for purposes of deriving a mapping of the magnetic field strength covering the major haulageways which contain conductors. The measurements were performed by Terry S. Cory, P.E. under U.S. Bureau of Mines purchase order P0372716. Assisting in performance of the measurements were personnel from the Bureau of Mines, PMSRC, and Helvetia Coal Co. Acknowledgement is given to Engineer Tom Strong of Helvetia Coal Co. who accompanied the measurement team and who lended support in performing the measurements and in supplying valuable engineering information for use in evaluation of the results. The results of the testing at medium frequency show that coverage of the entire mine area containing conductors can be achieved employing wireless radio techniques whereby radio signals are coupled into and are carried by these conductors. These results confirm earlier qualitative testing of the Collins Mine Wireless Radios in this mine. These results, performed over the frequency range 71-2890 KHz, illustrate the effect of frequency on the radio propagation with the conclusion that the best overall coverage is obtained at frequencies approximating 1000 KHz. This report presents all the raw data and the reduced data in the form of magnetic field strength contour maps. Sufficient information is provided to enable independent reduction of the data. A summary of observations which can be made directly from the contour maps is given.

A central requirement for using simulation models is the need for retrospect testing to validate experimental conclusions. Acceptance of a model by managers and safety practitioners is more likely to depend on its tested performance in-the field rather than on the underlying logic or the validity aspects of the model itself. It is here that simulation bridges the gap between theory and useful design procedures. The original version of the rail haulage sub-assembly was success¬fully tested in the field (Sanford, 1969). However, the case studies that were described here involved single-stage haulage and restricted jobtypes from UGMHS. Since this report together with Volume VI (Production Subsystem) describes extensive changes and modifications to the rail haulage sub-assembly and UGMHS, field tests were necessary to verify both the rail model and the linking concepts to the Produc¬tion Sub-system. Mine Description The candidate mine selected for model verification works the 6 1/2 foot Pittsburgh seam. Shaft openings are used for manways and ventilation and a dual compartment slope for materials handling. In the bottom half of the slope, a hoist with track handles supplies and equipment. In the upper half, a 42 inch belt conveyor travelling at 450 fpm moves coal from a rotary dump to the surface. The immediate roof is shale with the first 12 inches taken during development mining. About 4500 raw tons are produced daily from seven face units and one spare working three shifts. At seven of the sections,

"The central rescue station maintained jointly by several mining com¬panies in a district, is gaining in popularity in a large number of mining districts throughout the country. A very efficient first-aid and mine rescue association, with rescue station, is in operation in 'the Globe-Miami, Arizona, district. This association, known as the ""Globe-Miami District Mine Rescue and First-Aid Association""; was organized on January 1, 1918. Due to the effective work of this organization, several incipient mine fires have been extinguished before the fire got under headway and before any severe damage was done.The mine rescue station, which is situated on the highway between the towns of Globe and Miami, Arizona, is centrally located with respect to the various mines in the district. The station was completed, and a full craw em-ployed for conducting it work on January 1, 1920.The directors and other officers of the association are selected from the mine officials whose properties are served by it. It includes seven large metal mining and metallurgical companies in the Globe-Miami district. The names of the companies, together with the number of men employed by each follows.A director is in charge of the station; he performs the executive work, and, is the managing head of all training in first aid and mine rescue. The director is assisted by three station attendants, one of whom takes the morning shift, another, the evening shift, and the third, the night shift. They exchange shifts every two weeks. As three shifts are maintained, an attendant is on duty at all times. He answers emergency calls in case of fires or accidents, assists with the first-aid and mine rescue training, the inspection of the first-aid boxes and supply bases that are located at the various mines, and attends to miscellaneous duties in connection with the operation and maintenance of the station."

The West Pioneer RARE II study area, No. 1-006 (fig. 1), has Figure 1.--NEAR HERE a high molybdenum resource potential. Two molybdenum-bearing areas are being explored by Utah International and by Cyprus-Moly Corp, Inc. using geophysical exploration and diamond core drilling. The study area also contains potential resources of gold and silver at six prospects: the Bear Paw (Ibex), Black Bear, Coeur d'Alene, Franklin No. 1, Martin, and Maynard. In addition, the Black Rear and the Martin contain possible copper, lead, and molybdenum resources. Most of the workings are caved.

Consumption of abrasive materials in the United States decreased 23% in value from that of 1981 to $262 million, of which 53% was manufactured abrasive, 39% was industrial diamond (natural and synthetic), and 8% was natural abrasive. Production of natural abrasives, excluding industrial diamond, appeared to be stable when compared with that of 1981. Production of tripoli, a porous siliceous rock, increased slightly after decreasing steadily over the three previous years. Phosphonic acid and iminodiacetic acid chelating resins were investigated to assess their potential as selective ion exchangers for separating lanthanide elements and yttrium . The affinity of phosphonic acid resin for lanthanides increases with increasing atomic number , and that of iminodiacetic acid resin for lanthanides increases with atomic number to a maximum for element 62 and then declines with atomic number throughout the remainder of the series . Elution sequences of the elements with mineral acid eluants corresponded favorably with equilibrium data , whereas the elution sequence obtained with chelating eluants was proportional to the relative values of the stability constants of the chelating agents with the lanthanides . Separation of lanthanide mixtures into groups of light and heavy elements with iminodiacetic acid resin appears feasible .

Introduction A wealth of information exists which deals with electrical grounding, both from a general viewpoint and from a specifically mine-oriented approach. Many parameters must be investigated in order to thoroughly cover all of the variables which govern the performance of electrical grounding systems. The emphasis of this work on open-pit practices re- presents a new development in the field of grounding research, and an exhaustive review of the relevant historical documentation is especially desirable. Grounding System Purposes What purposes are served by a grounding system? The answer is four-fold and may be summarized as follows. First, it must limit potential gradients between conducting materials in a given area (56). When a phase conductor comes into contact with a machine frame, current flows through the equipment, which tends to become elevated above ground by an amount equal to the voltage on the conductor. If a man were to touch the machine while he was simultaneously connected to ground in some manner, his body would also tend to become elevated in potential, possibly to a lethal extent. Thus, the grounding system should provide a low- resistance path for the fault current to return to the source. The maxi- mum potential to which a man could be exposed when touching a machine frame is equal to the voltage drop along the ground conductors inside the power cable, as shown in Figure 1 (54).
