In Maryland, coal mining is confined to Garrett County and the western portion of Allegany .County. Terrain in both counties is predominately level with rolling hills; state law prohibits surface mining in steep slope areas. The Conemaugh and Allegany geologic formations contain five major minable fields or basins. These include: Upper Youghiogheny, Lower Youghiogheny, Castleman, Upper Potomac, and Georges Creek. Maryland's coal reserves are estimated to exceed one billion tons. Approximately 490 million tons of bituminous coal are considered recoverable using conventional mining methods. After World War 11, deep mining declined in Maryland, and by 1977 surface mining accounted for 91 percent of the total production. Since then, production at underground mines has recovered, accounting for 69 percent of the coal production in 1991. Maryland's permanent regulatory program was fully approved February 18, 1982. Its Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved June 16,1982.

In a process being investigated by the Bureau of Mines for recovering alumina from domestic nonbauxitic resources, calcined kaolinitic clay is leached with hydrochloric acid. Iron impurity in the clay is coleached and is removed in a solvent extraction step prior to crystallization of aluminum chloride hexahydrate, which is subsequently thermally decomposed to alumina. The FeCI3-HCl stripping liquor from the solvent extraction step is unsuitable for discharging to the environment; furthermore, economics requires recovery of the contained chloride values. In the present research, it was shown that the stripping liquor can be reacted with calcined clay to yield AlC13 in solution, plus precipitated iron oxides, residual silica, and unreacted excess clay as mixed solids. For the recovery of the AICl3 solution, the slurry could be separated or returned to the clay-HCI process stream at the solids washing step that follows primary HCI leaching of the clay. For the range 20° to 99° C, the time (t) (103 sec) required to react the waste liquor with excess clay, for essentially complete iron precipitation, depends on the absolute temperature (T) chosen, according to the expression t = e[(9.000/T) -23.5J. (1) Alumina was tried as a reagent alternative to clay but was not very effective, even under pressure and at high temperatures.

A computer simulation has been developed by the US. Bureau of Mines to estimate the chances of a miner making a successful escape while wearing a self-contained self-rescuer (SCSR). The model takes into account (1) training in the use of SCSR's, (2) apparatus integrity, and (3) oxygen cost of a mine escape. This report examines survival odds for a prototypical escape, and illustrates how these odds change when SCSR training is improved.

Two lime sinter processes for recovering alumina from clay, the double-leach process and the single-leach process, are evaluated in this Bureau of Mines report. In both processes, clay and limestone are mixed and sintered to form calcium aluminate from which alumina is extracted as sodium aluminate by leaching with a dilute solution of sodium carbonate. The pregnant liquor is desilicated, then carbonated to precipitate alumina trihydrate which is recovered and calcined to a,-alumina. The fixed capital costs for plants producing 1,000 tons per day of alumina are $85 million for the double-leach process and $86 million for the single-leach process based on a Marshall and Stevens chemical equipment index of 240.0. Because plant locations are variable with respect to the proximity of clay and limestone deposits, a nomograph is included to determine operating costs at various delivered costs of clay and limestone. For plants at which the delivered cost of clay containing 30 percent A1203 is $2 per ton and the delivered cost of limestone is $1 per ton, the operating costs are $81.04 and $89.87 per ton of alumina for the double-leach process and single-leach pro-cess, respectively.

Introduction The fields of an infinite line source in the presence of a conducting half-space have been examined by Wait and Spies (1971). In any real communication link using a current-carrying cable for the transmitting antenna, the cable is of finite length. Here we examine the fields of a finite length cable carrying a constant current in the presence of a homogeneous conducting half-space. The constant current assumption is valid at sufficiently low frequencies when an insulated cable is grounded at the end points (Wait, 1952; Sunde, 1968). Here we examine both surface and buried cables since both downlink and uplink communication links are of interest. Also, we examine both frequency and time solutions since either CW or pulsed communications may be used. Finally, it is necessary to include both magnetic and electric field solutions since reception could be with either loops or dipoles. Since the finite cable solution is more complicated than both the infinite line source and the short dipole solutions, we explore under what conditions a cable appears to be either infinitely long or very short. Some special cases, such as- the low frequency limit, permit analytical solutions which exhibit the dependence on various parameters, such as cable length, quite clearly. "A New Mica Company in China A report has been received from the American Consulate at Chungking, China, to the affect that a new company has been organized to operate a mica mine north of Ta-chien-lu, in the province of Ssu-Chuan. The company, which is entirely under Chinese management and control, has a working capital of $10,000. While comparatively new, the mine has been worked before, and apparently with some success. The mica is said to be of good quality. It is claimed that the deposit will supply a limited amount of mica that will cut in pieces a foot square or over, and larger quantities of smaller sizes. The chief difficulty is transportation, for it is reported that a ten days' journey, part of it over mountain trails, will be necessary to transport the mica from the mine to Yachow, the nearest practical waterway. It is probable, therefore, that the output of the mine will be limited.Necessity for Careful Trimming and Grading of MicaA recent report to the Department of Trade and Commerce, Ottawa, Canada, by Acting Trade Commissioner C. G. Venus, London, England, contains information which is of vital interest to mica producers in the United States. It is pointed out that mica exports from Canada to England show a gradual decline dur¬ing recent years, the figures being as follows: 1913- 1,383 cwt: 1914 - 1,225 cwt: 1915 - 1,864 cwt: 1S16 - 879 cwt: 1917 444 cwt: 1918 - 480 cwt. Shipments from India to England, on the other hand, show a steady increase from 40,178 cwt. in 1913 to 66,401 cwt, in 1918."

"INTRODUCTION The manganese deposits of the Drum Mountain area were investigated as two separate projects. The first was begun in November 1940 and completed in August 1941, and the second began in January 1945 and ended in May of the same year. The first project was initiated as part of the Bureau of Mines program for development of strategic minerals for national defense. Subsequent operations disclosed conditions somewhat different than were expected, and it was decided that additional drilling should be done to delimit the ore bearing horizons further.The more promising manganese deposits in the Drum Mountains are situated on properties known as the Staats manganese mine and the Pratt manganese mine. The property controlled by the Pratt interests is under lease to the Ward Leasing Co. The 1941 project investigated the deposits on both properties, whereas the 1945 project was planned to explore further the oxidized ore bodies of the Pratt mine, although one hole was drilled in an attempt to extend the carbonate ore body on the Staats property (fig. 1).ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Coal, in the process of mining, transportation, and handling and on exposure to the weather, is subject to more or less disintegration. This disintegrated coal is usually called "slack" and amounts often to a considerable percentage of the lump coal produced in the mines. If this slack coal is wasted the loss so occasioned ranges from 5 to 50 per cent, or even more, of the total coal mined. It is therefore clear that the utilization of this waste slack coal becomes a serious economic consideration. When the coal is suitable for the production of coke, the utilization of the slack presents no difficulty, as it is in demand for that purpose. If the coal does not produce good coke, but cakes rather readily, the slack can be used for boiler purposes, as it fuses together more or less quickly, and burns on the furnace grate without great loss. Coal that cakes less readily can be burned on grates of special construc- tion. When so used it is more troublesome to handle, and the waste is greater than when lump coal is used. Consequently the price of much of the slack coal for fuel purposes ranges considerably lower than that of the lump coal from the same mine. The full value of this slack coal as fuel can be realized by first form- ing the coal into a coherent mass or briquet, such briquets, when of good quality, being equal to or of greater value than the original

The specific objective of research presented in this report was clarifi- cation of physicochemical fundamentals of the mechanism of dust explosions. The equipment, techniques (chiefly photographic), and dusts (chiefly graphite and light metals) employed are described. From behavior of individual par- ticles, conclusions are drawn as to their cooperative function in ignition and combustion of dust clouds. Results are interpreted using thermal theory as accepted for combustible gas mixtures. Radiative transfer across the flame front, as a characteristic of dust flames, is given particular atten- tion. Related studies by other investigators are discussed.

A REPORT of technological advancements restricted to a specific 12-month period is impractical. Inherent in the nature and development of technology is the element of time; rarely can a new process or product be attributed to a particular year. An overall picture of general trends and pattern changes, however, is indicative of technological growth. This paper presents selected observations and discussions of current metallurgical research and practices in an attempt to develop' such a picture. Of the estimated $16.5 billion spent for research and development in the United States in 1962, at least 80 percent was earmarked for the aircraft, electronics, chemical, and machinery industries. Much of the effort was of the end-use variety and was oriented closely to the national defense and aerospace programs. Only a small fraction of the total research money was directed to studies of the utilization and improvement of metals. Even if the investigations in allied fields such as solid state physics are included, the total research expenditure for metal and mineral materials barely reached $500 million. An additional $200 million was spent by industry and government for development of minerals recovery and processing methods.

"Under the organic act establishing it, the Bureau of Mines is authorized to conduct investigations designed to improve health and safety conditions in the mineral industry and to promote efficient development and utilization of our mineral resources. The field of the Bureau's activity, therefore, begins with the commercial development of mineral deposits and ends with the production and utilization of the final marketable product.In order to serve more efficiently the various sections of the country, the Bureau has established, in addition to its main offices at Washington, D. C., eleven field experiment stations, three field offices and several mine rescue cars and mina rescue stations. These field branches are so distributed as to cover most of the mining districts of this country, including Alaska. The field service in general deals with specific experimental problems, cooperative work with non-governmental institutions, and mina rescue work, while the Washington office is the administrative head and is responsible for the distribution of general information, the chiefs of the technical and administrative divisions of the Bureau being stationed there.The Bureau is prohibited by law from doing work exclusively for the benefit of any private company or individual. Generally speaking, the Bureau does no assaying, ore testing, or similar service work for the benefit of private companies or individuals. In response to requests for work of this sort a list of assay and ore testing laboratories is supplied. In referring inquiries to com-mercial laboratories or consulting engineers, care is taken to mention several names so as to avoid designating any one establishment or engineer."

The rapid depletion of zinc-lead ore reserves and the rising costs of exploration have been major factors in the decline of mining activities and explorations for additional reserves in the Tri-State mining district. There is a need to develop new or adopt known, improved exploration techniques that will appreciably lower the costs of exploration. Demonstration of the practicability of using improved techniques to indicate, rapidly and cheaply, mineralized areas or geologic structures where more intensive explorations are justified could stimulate the search for and discovery of additional ore reserves. Various operators in the Tri-State district have used geophysical surveys to some extent since 1928 to guide exploratory drilling. Some geophysical investigations have also been made in the district by the State Geological Surveys of Kansas (11)3/ and Missouri (8, 13) and by Federal agencies (16), with the objective of directing exploratory drilling to areas where geologic conditions favored ore deposition. Many factual data obtained have not been published. The investigations generally have not been broad enough to permit conclusive evaluation of the usefulness of the geophysical techniques in all parts of the district.

"So much has been written on the ore genesis of the Comstock Lode that it is sufficient here to describe the original ores as consisting chiefly of quartz and some calcite. In places .a considerable amount of pyrite appears. There are also minor amounts of galena, chalcopyrite, and sphalerite. The chief silver minerals are argentite, stephanite, and polybasite. Most of the gold is native.A composite analysis of the ore; obtained by averaging the results from the early workings of several mines, is shown in Table 1.The history of the milling of Comstock ores from the Sixties to date would call for a review of the development of precious-metal metallurgy. However, a brief outline of the methods employed will give a better basis for studying the difficulties that are to be expected in the final retreatment of the remaining residues.In the earliest days amalgamation was accepted as the main recovery method. The large tonnage of good-grade ore from the Comstock Lode attracted the best metal¬lurgical talent of the time, and developed there the highest skill in the art of amalgamation, including the auxiliary chemical preparation of the ores and the mechanical operation. In this work 0.5 to 6.0 pounds of mercury was used per ton of ore. The mercury loss probably averaged about 2.5 pounds per ton of ore treated.The better grade of tailings from the ores milled were impounded, often near the works. In many cases the same tailings were reworked several times before they entered the main outflow waste stream that had its course down Seven Mile Canyon to the Carson River. Following the water course down the canyon the tailings were re-impounded, and, as metallurgy advanced, new plants were erected to again re-treat them. The most successful of these plants used forms of amalgamation, chlorination, and cyanide methods of recovery. To the tailings from the re-treatment plants, smaller tonnages of untreated tailings produced by milling lower-grade ore are continually added.Along the stream bed down the canyon a series of blanket runways were constructed, and each was independently operated for years by one or more men. All, or the heavier portion of the stream flow was run over the blankets; in this way much of the heavier concentrate, mostly sulphides and mercury products, was reclaimed.All of the residues finally entered the run-off flow along with the sewage from Virginia City and waste from the gas works, saw mills, and stables. As the accumulation along the bed of the Carson River became a nuisance, the lighter and better grade of tailings was impounded on the banks of the river. This accounts for the large dumps locally known as ""Douglas tailings."""

The physical properties and clay mineral content of the major oil-producing formations in the Powder River Basin of Wyoming were determined by analyses of cores from 100 wells. Interrelationships were established among permeability, restored water saturation, clay content, and bulk swelling capacity of the crushed sample and used to estimate the susceptibility of the formations to water damage. The ratio of water permeability to gas permeability (kw/ki) offers a convenient scale for semiquantitatively estimating the water sensitivity of sands. The irreducible water saturation was also found to have a similar relationship to the clay mineral content and the water sensitivity of the sands. The average relation of water permeability to gas permeability is different for each sand, as shown by the curves, and the relative positions of the curves indicate the degree of water sensitivity of each sand from which the susceptibility to water damage may be estimated. How accurately these estimates show formation behavior under field operations will not be known until studies of field performance can be made. The water permeabilities of the Muddy, Minnelusa, and Tensleep sands average about the same as the gas permeabilities, and these sands are classified as insensitive. The water permeabilities of the Sussex and Shannon sands, at the other extreme, are much less than the gas permabilities [when average ki is 30 millidarcys (md), kw is 6.1 md], and these sands are classified as highly water sensitive. The sensitivities of the five other sands are between these extremes.

To help mine safety and health professionals manage and reduce hazardous noise exposure with a software tool that simplifies the record-keeping and analysis process. Background Hearing loss resulting from overexposure to noise continues to be a problem throughout the U.S. mining industry. Studies indicate that 70%?90% of all miners have a noise-induced hearing loss severe enough to be classified as a hearing disability by the time they reach retirement age. To address this problem, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed the Determination of Sound Exposures (DOSES) software program. DOSES is designed specifically for use by mine management and safety personnel to simplify the record-keeping and analysis associated with time-motion studies, making it easier to identify and solve noise exposure problems.

The Bureau of Mines used sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) tracer gas to evaluate the effectiveness of gob ventilation and/or sealing practices at three coal mines, each having different problems associated with their mined-out areas. The purpose of these ventilation studies was to better understand whether current techniques employed for ventilation or sealing are successful at minimizing the potential for gob fires and explosions. The work performed at each mine is discussed: One is a long-wall operation that uses ventilation to carry off hazardous gases, and two are room-and-pillar operations, each with far different concerns, that seal off the gobs to isolate them from the main mine ventilation. In all cases employment of the Bureau's SF6 tracer gas technique resulted in answers to questions raised by the mine operators concerning the effectiveness of their gob ventilation or sealing practices in preventing mine fires.

Operation of the Bureau of Mines raw refuse continuous separation pilot plant is described, including modifications made to plant equipment for improved performance. Products recovered from refuse, many of which have been evaluated by other laboratories and private firms, are discussed. Sampling procedures used in the pilot plant and detailed data obtained from processing refuse from 13 municipalities are presented in appendixes. Fuel evaluations made on combustible fractions of refuse from the various municipalities are also presented. Information and data obtained at the pilot plant have been used to assist many municipalities in solving their urban refuse problems.

Of the 15 selected non fuel mineral commodities detailed in table 12, only 3 indicated increases in worldwide consumption in 1992. As in 1991, decline in consumption levels of the selected commodities can be attributed to reduced levels of use in the former U.S.S.R. and Eastern Europe. Of the remaining 12 commodities, 2 magnesium and cadmium, stayed relatively the same, while the other 10, including iron and steel, all recorded decreases. Global consumption of iron ore is estimated to have fallen about 3.5 % or about 30 million tons. This is a greater decline than what was estimated for production of iron ore, which is down only 2.7% or nearly 26.5 million tons, suggesting an addition to stocks. The consumption trend for iron and steel has been declining since 1989. This has mainly been due to the continued drops in use in the former U.S.S.R. and Eastern Europe. Even as the European economy begins to turn upward, there may only be a slight increase in consumption of iron, steel, and cement, considering the high cost of construction needed to modernize factories and buildings in Eastern Europe. Many feel that the economies of these countries are limited by the current status of their industries.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a laboratory-scale investigation of a technique that produces zinc sulfate and elemental sulfur from sphalerite concentrates by reaction with sulfuric acid at 175° to 200° C and ambient pressure. The objective of the investigation was to develop a hydrometallurgical method of producing zinc from sulfide concentrates that does not generate sulfur dioxide pollutants. Reaction with 80-to 85-pct sulfuric acid produced 4 moles of sulfur for every 3 moles of sphalerite reacted, with minimal production of sulfur gases under optimum conditions. More than 98 pct of the zinc was recovered as zinc sulfate after 3 hours at 175° C. The reaction mixture was leached with simulated spent zinc electrolyte containing 13-pct sulfuric acid to recover zinc sulfate from the insoluble, high-sulfur residue. Neutral zinc sulfate, which is required for electrolysis, was separated from the sulfuric acid solution by crystallization as ZnS04?7H20 at -10° C. Up to 80 pct of the water in the recycled electrolysis solution was removed by the crystallization process; evaporation was used to further concentrate the sulfuric acid for reuse in leaching sphalerite. Advantages of the proposed method over conven-tional roasting and leaching include virtual elimination of sulfur dioxide, production of a solid sulfur byproduct, and higher zinc recoveries due to elimination of zinc ferrite losses.
