This Bureau of Mines report investigates the horizontal trajectory of boreholes drilled in coalbeds using the rotary drilling technique. Test holes drilled in coalbeds showed that the path of a borehole in the horizontal plane depends on drilling assembly configuration, drill bit rotation, and coalbed geologic features. An assembly that contained an 18-ft (5.53) long drill collar and two centralizers had the best horizontal stability evidenced by trajectories that deviated less than 16 ft (4.9 m) from a target at 1,000 ft (305 m). Removal of one of the centralizers resulted in a loss of control of hole trajectory in the horizontal plane. Generally, holes tended to turn to the right, presumably because of right-hand rotation of the bit. Deviations from the original bearing line were as much as 200 ft (61 m) or more at a depth of 1,000 ft (305 m).

The existence of vast deposits of lignite in the West Central and Western States is well known, although the extent and importance of the deposits have not been appreciated, nor has there been an adequate economic utilization of the deposits. The work of the Bureau of Mines, the United States Geological Survey, and the State geological surveys is disclosing an increasingly large area, underlaid with this kind of coal. Among the States having the largest workable deposits may be mentioned North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, and Texas, and in several other Western States lignite occurs in smaller areas. In North Dakota alone it is estimated that the deposits cover approximately 32,000 square miles, many of them being 10 to 15 feet thick and capable of producing in all several hundred billions of tons of lignite. When one stops to consider what these figures mean as to the immensity of these deposits in the West, it is not strange that people are seeking to ascertain better means for deriving larger benefits from the proper utilization of those great deposits. Consequently, any proposed methods of utilization that are promising are well worthy of careful consideration.

This report presents a detailed lithologic description of the Big Lime, Keener, Big Injun, Weir, and Berea horizons from a well cored in the Spruce Creek oilfield, Ritchie County, W. Va. Well logs and results of core analysis are also included. The information was obtained during the Bureau of Mines continuing technical evaluation of selected Appalachian area oil reservoirs for increased ultimate recovery. The lithologic study of these important West Virginia oil and gas producing horizons was made on a 4-inch-diameter core. Commercial oil production was obtained by the well owner after the Big Injun horizon was successfully hydraulically fractured.

It was determined that a selection of different types of fire sensors could be used to discriminate mine fires from nuisance emissions produced by diesel equipment. A neural network (NN) was developed for application to coal, wood, and conveyor belt fires in the presence of diesel emissions and evaluated with the successful prediction of twenty-two out of twenty-three mine fires based upon a fire probability determination. The optimum sensor selection for the NN was comprised of a carbon monoxide (CO) sensor, two different types of metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) sensors, and an optical path smoke sensor.

The Bureau of Mines dried and carbonized two wood wastes, one softwood (redwood) and one hardwood (oak), using continuous, vertical entrainment techniques previously developed for use with coal. It was demonstrated that these techniques are readily applicable to wood waste and that appreciable changes in the yields of carbonization products can be obtained by varying operating conditions. A limited amount of experimental work was done on briquetting the charcoals. Firm briquets were formed with oak charcoal, although greater quantities of starch binder than used commercially for kiln-produced charcoal were required. Redwood charcoal did not briquet successfully under the test conditions employed.

An electrochemical process was developed for the preparation of vanadium from vanadium carbide. Commercially available vanadium carbide (V2C) was used as the starting material. Vanadium was obtained by electrolysis of the V2C in a BaCl2-KCl-NaCI-VCl2 electrolyte at 670° C using a helium-atmosphere, molten-salt electrolytic cell. Vanadium products were recovered with purities high as 99.6 percent. Current efficiencies of 87 percent and vanadium recoveries of 84 percent were attained. The cathode products were amenable to electrorefining to high-purity vanadium of 99.96-percent purity.

The concept of limit burning velocities is being used to formulate a quantitative theory of flammability limits. Competing and complicating processes dissipate power from a combustion wave and quench propagation at some characteristically low limit velocity. Two earlier reports dealt with process (a), natural convection (RI 8127); and with process (b), conductive-convective wall losses (RI 8469). This report considers process (c), radiative losses, and process (d), selective diffusional demixing. The limit burning velocity for radiative losses is [(SU)c ~ e cp] It is normally not a significant process for premixed gas flames; however, for laminar flame propagation in a gravity-free environment, it is the only loss process present. Accordingly, limit velocities at zero gravity should be much lower than on earth, and premixed gases should be flammable over wider composition ranges. For highly emissive dusts, soot, or ash-forming flames, radiative losses are significant even under normal gravity conditions. Selective diffusional demixing is a complication that manifests itself in the form of cellular flame structures and wide gaps in composition between upward and downward propagation limits. It induces a burning velocity shift (?Su)d, causing the flame to behave as though it were richer or leaner than its initial composition, depending on whether the fuel or the oxidizer mole¬cule has the higher diffusivity. A simple pertubation analysis shows that the process generates stable cellular flames whenever [dsu] > 0, where ci is the concentration of the reactant with the higher diffusivity. The same analysis indicates that at the opposite stoichiometry, where [dcu] < 0, laminar structures are stabilized. A simple formula for the diameter of cellular flames is derived, which predicts that dcell should vary inversely with the product of the diffusivity difference Di -DJ, and the burning velocity slope [dc ]. Those predictions are in good agreement with the available data. Buoyancy forces for upward propagation induce flame front curvature, and hence buoyancy and selective diffusion are mutually supportive in upward propagation. Thus large gaps in composition between upward and downward limits are present in those composition domains where cellular flames are stable.

Continuous remote sensing of methane concentration in underground mines. Approach A methane transducer, developed as a fixed point rib-or face-mounted operating device, measures ambient levels of methane and produces a signal that is proportional to the measured concentration. How It Works The methane transducer, developed under contract for the Bureau of Mines, uses a catalytic-type sensor which will detect methane concentration. The transducer is mounted vertically, as shown. This type of mounting minimizes dust accumulation on the sensing element, which might cause degraded operation. The unit must not be located in an area where water can continuously drip or run on It. The transducer generates an electrical signal proportional to methane concentration at the sensor. A sensor failure output indicates the status of the sensing element A circuit within the methane transducer detects whether the sensing element is shorted or open. A high signal (approximately 8 Vdc) on the failure output Indicates the sensor element is operating In Its normal range. A low output (less than 1 Vdc) indicates an element fault. As a part of the investigation of strategic-mineral deposits in the United States under the Strategic Minerals Act, engineers of the Bureau of Mines examined and sampled numerous deposits of fluorite ore from Utah. From those deposits that warranted further investigation, samples were submitted to the Ore Dressing Section of the Salt Lake City Station for metallurgical testing. This paper gives data summarizing the results obtained from laboratory ore-dressing studies of the fluorite ores submitted. Test work was done on samples from four properties in the Washington Mining District, Beaver County; two properties in the Star Mining District, Beaver County; one property in the Wah Wah Mountains, Beaver County; and three properties in Tooele County, Utah. In general, the Washington District ores were found amenable to concentration by flotation for the production of acid-grade fluorspar. None of the other ores were beneficiated to acid-grade, but several were amenable to concentration for the production of metallurgical-grade fluorspar concentrates.

In the past, mine management has been concerned with removing water from active mining sections primarily because it hampered the movement of mining equipment and aggravated the working condition of the miners. Pumping water to sumps and gravity drainage by ditching have proven successful in mines for minimizing section down time due to water influx. However, with the advent of more strict pollution laws the mining engineer must now be concerned with keeping water out of the section and also with preventing it from causing pollution. A review of the handbooks and textbooks used in the mining engineering curricula reveals that little has been written concerning acid mine water prevention or control in underground coal mines. Additionally, the review of the curricula of mining schools indicates they are not teaching the engineering students the necessary techniques of mine water management as they relate to the abatement of mine water pollution.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory and small-scale, continuous tests of weathered mica-pegmatite ores from Randolph County, Ala., to determine the feasibility of recovering commercial-grade mica concentrates by flotation. Two flotation methods were used in continuous tests for recovery of mica. One method utilized acid-cationic flotation for the recovery of coarse mica and alkaline-anionic-cationic flotation for recovering fine mica. This method yielded mica concentrates containing 98.6 percent mica with a recovery of 85.9 percent. The other method was based on the Bureau-developed alkaline-anionic-cationic method, and yielded concentrates containing 97.5 percent mica with a recovery of over 90 percent. In both methods, preconcentration of the ground ore on a Humphreys spiral was employed to reject over half of the feed in a product virtually free of mica.
