The Bureau of Mines is conducting a series of investigations, with a view to ascertaining the most efficient methods of obtaining gasoline from petroleum and natural gas. This report deals with a method of extracting gasoline from natural gas by absorbing the gasoline in oil and subsequently separating it from the oil by distillation. The process is quite different from those of compression and condensation which have been used for a number of years for extracting gasoline from casing-head natural gas, and has not heretofore been described in the literature. MANUFACTURE OF GASOLINE FROM CASING-HEAD GAS. The extraction of gasoline from casing-head natural gas by compression and condensation methods has become a large and lucrative industry in this country. In the year 1915 about 65,000,000a gallons of gasoline prepared by these methods was placed on the market. In addition, in marketing this gasoline, at many plants an equivalent quantity of naphtha was blended with the gasoline, thereby utilizing for automobile fuel and other purposes a large quantity of naphtha that otherwise would have been unsuited for these purposes. The increase for the year 1915 over 1914 was about 22,000,000 gallons. For the year 1916 the production should be more than 100,000,000 gallons. The quantity of casing-head gas treated in the year 1915 by compression and condensation methods amounted to about 24,000,000,000 cubic feet; the average yield of gasoline was 2.57 gallons per 1,000 cubic feet. b This casing-head gas represents natural gas that formerly went largely to waste; hence the process represented a distinct and important step in the utilization of the natural gas produced in this country.

ESTATE IN MINERALS. Minerals beneath the surface may be made the subject of separate ownership either by a grant of the minerals by the owner of the land or by a grant of the land excepting the minerals, and thereby an estate in fee simple is created in the minerals, as corporeal things real. Colby, In re, Iowa, 169 Northwestern 443, p. 444. DEEDS EXCHANGING DIFFERENT MINERALS-RIGHTS OF PARTIES. The lands of two adjoining owners were underlaid with cement rock and clay at a depth of about 100 feet from the surface and with coal veins some 600 feet below the surface. By an exchange of deeds one of the land owners conveyed to the other the cement rock and clay with the right to mine and remove the same without entering upon the surface, but the deed contained no covenant not to injure the surface. The other deed conveyed the coal seam and so much of the rock and other minerals just above and below the coal as might be required in connection with the mining and removing of the coal, together with the right to mine and remove the same, and the adja- cent rock, clay, and other minerals, without entering upon or injuring the surface, with one immaterial exception. The deeds do not define the word "surface" and neither expressly nor by implication did they secure to the coal owner the right to subside the overlying cement rock; but the implication is to the contrary, as the deed gives the right to mine and remove coal without entering upon or injuring the surface. The provision that the coal owner should not enter upon or injure the surface amounts to a clause that the coal mine. shall not be worked so as to let down the surface and this does not create any inconsistency with the provision giving the right to mine and carry away the coal.

The Annual Report of the Director of the Bureau of Mines to the Secretary of the Interior for the Fiscal Year ended June 30, 1945, summarizes the year's work on coal as follows: Coal and Coal Products The United States maintained its No. 1 industrial position in supplying fuel for war and in preparing for peace through more complete mining, improved preparation and up-grading of coal for special uses, and better utilization of coal in industrial establishments and homes.

The STATE MINERAL SUMMARIES publication provides estimated data and summaries of mineral activities at the State level for 1989. Most of the estimates are based on nine months data. These summaries have been prepared in cooperation with State geological surveys or related agencies. Increased awareness of a healthy work environment is common to all industries and the stone industry is no exception. The presence of operating diesel equipment, welding, stone production blasting, and silica dust in a working environment all contribute to air quality issues in underground stone mines. Particularly recognized is the exposure of workers to diesel particulate matter (DPM). Recent regulations call for a DPM standard of 160TC ug/m3 (TC = Total Carbon). The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted research to improve the ventilation of these mines and consequently reduce the exposure of workers to harmful airborne contaminants. The results have shown that the ventilation of underground stone mines can be significantly enhanced using improved ventilation controls and techniques. Large-opening stone mines present specialized ventilation challenges because their entries are much larger than in other types of mines. Most stone mines have entries about 40 feet wide and up to 30 feet high, with bench areas that may extend even higher. These large entries present the positive opportunity to move large air quantities at relatively low mine fan pressures resulting in lower fan horsepower and reduced operating costs. However, the difficulty in ventilating large-opening mines is that even with large air volumes, the air velocity is often less than 100 feet/minute. Higher ventilation velocities more quickly dilute and remove contaminants from the face areas. Higher ventilation airflow velocities can be achieved by effective ventilation planning and proper choice of ventilation fans.

This investigation was undertaken to contribute to the understanding of underground pull tests by conducting laboratory tests under closely controlled conditions. Steel bolts, instrumented with electrical resistance strain gages, were anchored in an aluminum block, a granite block, and a steel sleeve, and were subjected to pull tests. The bearing plates used were either flat7 dished, or embossed. In pull testing a bolt that is prestressed, there is a range of loading during which bolt load is greater than the jack-applied load, This study showed that preload, the size, shape, and type of bearing plate; and the geometry of the system determine the point at which bolt load and applied load become equal. The effects on bolt load of both a theoretical solution and actual pull tests were analogous and led to similar results.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a portable, inexpensive teleoperation system for mobile hard-rock mining equipment. The system was tested on a compact loader-trammer in a simulated stope. The teleoperation system includes radio remote control and computer-assisted navigation. A recent enhancement includes video cameras mounted on the machine to provide visual information to the operator. This system allows the operator to remain in a safe location while operating the machine from a distance, thus increasing both operator safety and mining productivity.

The Bureau of Mines conducted experiments on one synthetic and three natural sandstone samples to investigate the effects of acoustic energy on the flow of brine in porous media. Ultrasonic energy at a frequency of 20 kc per second and an intensity of 55 watts per cm2 was irradiated in the direction of the fluid flow and in the opposite direction for distances of 1/2 and 2 inches between the vibrating device and the sample face and under conditions of suppressed and nonsuppressed cavitation. Forty tests were conducted: 32 with a pressure differential of 0.64 psi across the samples, 2 with 5 psi, and 6 with 15 psi. Acoustic waves altered the rate of flow of the brine through the samples, but this effect was observed only at low differential pressures and from a practical point of view was insignificant. As a result of irradiation, however, the samples exhibited reduced permeability. This reduction was probably caused by the shifting of solid particles dislodged by the acoustic waves.

A series of steel heats, one low-alloy and nine carbon, was made by the Bureau of Mines in a 1-ton arc furnace from ferrous scrap from incinerated refuse, steel cans, and detinned steel cans, both alone and blended with heavy-melting scrap. Two additional control heats, one of carbon steel and one of low-alloy steel, were made from electric furnace heavy-melting scrap to pro-vide comparative data. The steel products were cast into two 4-by 4-inch nominal 50-pound ingots; in most heats, an 8-by 8-inch nominal 7S0-pound ingot was also obtained. Tests of these ingots indicated that reinforcing bars of acceptable quality can be made from urban refuse components such as steel cans.

This volume describes software developed for programmable calculators that is useful in the analysis and design of mine electrical power systems. The programs are equally useful for any industrial or commercial power system. All programs are written for both the HP-97 and the TI-59 programmable calculators. Listings of both versions of the twelve programs that were developed appear in the report. The programs that were developed can be broken into two groups. The first group encompasses design-oriented programs. The second group encompasses analysis programs. For each program the following items are provided: a description of the program's capabilities, the solution technique used, instructions on how to use the program, a worked out example with data and results and, finally, listings of the programs for the HP-97 and TI-59 programmable calculators. Typical problems that can be attacked with these programs include ground bed design, selection of contactor size, fuse size, relay settings, instantaneous overcurrent trip settings for trailing cables, allowable cyclic cable loading, short circuit analyses, prediction of transient voltages and others.

In 1900, as far as available records show, there were only two producer-gas power installations in the United States. In June, 1915, the number probably exceeded 1,000. Of this number, some 84.5 per cent comprised small plants using anthracite, and only about 15 per cent of the total number utilized bituminous coal and lignite. In addition to these, two plants used wood, and three or four used oil. In the main, however, the larger sized units are operating on bituminous coal and lignite. During the early years of these plants little success was anticipated from the use of bituminous coals and lignites, but in 1904 and 1905 it was fully demonstrated at the Government testing station at St. Louis that these fuels could be utilized to excellent advantage. However, although many producer-gas plants in daily operation are using bituminous coal and lignite, many power-plant men are still skeptical regarding the successful commercial use of these fuels.

"INTRODUCTION The first ten papers of the series on smelting in the lead blast furnace described the operation at the custom smelter of the International Smelting Co., Tooele, Utah, and at the plant of the Bunker Hill Smelting Co., Kellogg, Idaho, which handled a very rich lead concentrate. These previous papers may be considered a picture of the traditional lead smelter treating custom ores and of the smelter that will treat the type of product likely to be made in the future - lead concentrates of an increasingly rich grade.The great plant at Trail is of special interest to those smelting lead products containing much zinc and faced with the necessity of transforming all of their byproducts into commodities which may be sold profitably. The plant is equipped to produce electrolytic zinc, lead, copper, silver, bismuth, and cadmium. Part of the sulphur evolved from treating the ores is converted into sulphuric acid. Complete fertilizers for agricultural purposes are also produced.The smelter of lead ores has long considered that zinc is one of the most difficult ingredients that he has to handle. Even with the gretat improvement in flotation practice today, the residues from electrolytic zinc plants leaching zinc concentrates must still be smelted for their lead content. Of the total gangue material not separated from the lead concentrate sent to the smelter, zinc is still one of the most notable in percentage. The most successful way of coordinating the over-all operations of a concentrator, an electrolytic zinc plant, and a smelter provided with a plant for re-treating the blast-furnace slag for its lead and zinc content must be of interest to many treating complex ores.ACKNOWLEDGMENTThe data in this paper were collected in cooperation with the Consolidated Mining & Smelting Co. of Canada, Limited, and its entire technical staff. In the course of the investigation of manganese mineral occurrences in the United States, Bureau of Mines examining engineers collected several lots of ore from the Black Rock, Kramer, and. Morgan-Cromar properties, Tooele and Juab Counties, Utah. Extensive laboratory tests were made to determine the amenability of the ores to standard ore-dressing methods of concentration. The Black Rock claims 1 and 2 are 42 miles northwest of Jericho, Tooele County, Utah. A. J. Huber of Salt Lake City and Ross Rydalch of Tooele, Utah, are the owners. The deposit-is reported to be a definite manganese fissure vein in quartzite along which considerable shearing and cross fracturing have occurred. Laboratory work was conducted on a 2-ton sample of run-of-mine ore procured by a Bureau of Mines examining engineer and two smaller, higher-grade samples submitted by the owners as a result of later development. The Kramer deposit is described as a bed of manganese oxides in quartz. The property is being worked by L. E. Kramer, Tooele, Utah, and is 41 miles northwest of Jericho) Tooele County, Utah, approximately 1 mile north of the Tooele-Juab County line. A 1-ton run-of-mine sample was submitted for testing by the examining engineer.

To improve communication among Government, industry, and academic researchers in the field of thermodynamics, the Federal Bureau of Mines sponsored a Workshop on Techniques for Measurement of Thermodynamic Properties in August 1979. Participants at the workshop presented 33 papers on the subjects of temperature measurement and control, general calorimetric techniques, low-temperature calorimetry, high-temperature calorimetry, galvanic cells, ionic solutions, and heterogeneous phase equilibria. A special invited lecture was presented by E. F. Westrum, Jr., on the resolution of lattice heat capacity. This Information Circular comprises the proceedings of the workshop and includes the texts of papers presented and discussion by attendees.

Efforts to win an enriched manganiferous product from the Missouri Valley deposits of South Dakota have included an application of most known ore-dressing devices and have been largely unsuccessful. At least two methods showed some promise of success and were the subjects of detailed Investigation by the Bureau of Mines during the period from July 1945 to August 1947. A series of mining and beneficiation tests were undertaken to determine conditions under which the most feasible concentration methods could be employed and to define the limits of such applications in terms of the character of the final beneficiated product. In the absence of a significant current market for any conceivable product of beneficiation, the extent to which applied methods might be considered successful was measured in terms of ratios of recoveries to grade, regardless of the adaptability of such beneficiated products to further metallurgical or direct usage. The results of all investigations show that production of a shale-free, concretionary, manganese-bearing product by any known method requires great sacrifices in manganese recovery. Products of beneficiation, with specifications permitting some inclusion of shale, can probably be most effectively produced by methods employing specialized jigging equipment as the principal functional unit of a process.

The purposes of the research were to assess the applicability of new accident investigation methods to mining accidents, and to adapt those found to be applicable in the development of a new methodology for use in mining. The development included field testing, evaluation and modification of the new methodology. The report is in two volumes. This, volume one, discusses primarily the Phase I work: background research, design of a methodology for field evaluation, and preliminary field tests in Utah mines. Phase I was completed in June, 1980. Also discussed are some activities to prepare for a field evaluation during the period May 1980 -October 1981. Volume 2 discusses the subsequent field tests, modifications of the initial methodology and the results of use of the methodology in two mining companies for a period of approximately eighteen months, and in other companies for selected loss incidents during that period.

Direct current electrical systems are used in most coal mines primarily to power the main haulage trains and secondarily to feed other equipment and passageway lighting. Electrical power is supplied from rotary machines or static rectifier equipment and is distributed through the mine by open trolley wires and feeder cables. The rails of the haulageway are used as a current return path. This exposed power distribution system is very vulnerable to conditions which lead to undesired leakage currents and short circuits and, consequently, the possibility of fires or other hazards to personnel. Present techniques and equipment have been utilized in so far as practical to improve the safety of the dc electrical system; however, there still appears a need for further improvement. Because of this need, this program was sponsored by the Bureau of Mines to investigate two specific technical areas related to improvement of dc electrical system safety. One area included the determination of the characteristics of mine electrical systems and their protection requirements and the verification of the adequacy of available protective devices for mine service. Despite the widespread application of industrial protective equipment in mines, there was little detailed technical information available related specifically to the performance of this equipment in service. Our task was not only to develop useful information regarding mine system protection, but also to define and verify the adequacy of the protective devices available. The absence of plants on the Pacific coast for the reduction of iron ores usually is attributed to the fuel situation there. Thus, the bulletin of the. State Division of Mines for 1933, entitled "California Mineral Production," says: "There are considerable deposits of iron ore known in California, notably in Shasta, Mad era, Placer, Riverside, San Bernardino, and Los Angeles Counties, but production has so far been limited for lack of an economic supply of coking coal." It has been estimated that the six major steel plants of the Pacific coast have an annual ingot capacity of 600,000 tons. The present need for tin plate averages 300,000 tons yearly for California alone, of which some 12 percent is manufactured locally. If the consump¬tion of other iron and steel products in 1929 may be taken as an approximate, estimate of the normal requirement for such products, it may be estimated further that, 65,000 to 75,000 tons each of cast-iron pipe and steel reinforcing bars and 300,000 to 400,000 tons of structural shapes and plates will be required annually in California.
