Prior research has suggested that the source of respirable silica dust in underground coal mines is typically the immediate top or bottom lithology adjacent to the mined seam, not mineral matter bound within the mined coal bed. Geochemical analyses were applied in an effort to identify the specific source rock of respirable quartz dust in coal mines. The analyses also demonstrate the compositional changes that take place in the generation of the respirable dust fraction from parent rock material. All six mine sites were mining coal with relatively low mineral matter content, although two mines were operating in the Fire Clay coal bed which contains a persistent tonstein. Interpretations of Ca, Mg, Mn, Na, and K concentrations strongly suggest that the top strata above the mined seam is the primary source of mineral dust produced during mining. One site indicates a mixed or bottom source, possibly due to site specific conditions. Respirable dust compositional analyses suggest a direct relationship between the quantity of mineral Si and the quantity of quartz Si. A similar relationship was not found in either the top or bottom rocks adjacent to the mined seam. An apparent loss of elemental Al was noted in the respirable dust fraction when compared to potential parent rock sources. Elemental Al is present in top and bottom rock strata within illite, kaolinite, feldspar, and chlorite. A possible explanation for loss of Al in the respirable dust samples is the removal of clays and possibly chlorite minerals. It is expected that removal of this portion of the Al bearing mineral matter occurs during rock abrasion and dust transport prior to dust capture on the samplers.

"The premium on gold in London, reflecting the further depreciation of the pound sterling, has risen from about 22 per cent as noted in these reports for December, to about 28%. This will enable more South African gold mines to come into the profitably ;reducing class, and will also tend to increase the gold production from that region.Figures are now at hand showing the drop that occured in the sold output in the Transvaal, South Africa, during 1919, in which year 8,330,091 ounces of gold were produced against 8,418, 292 ounces in 1918, a decrease of 88,200 ounces. Annual gold output from this, the most important gold area in the world, has dropped almost one million ounces in the past three years, as the following table shows:Although the decrease in not as marked comparatively as that of 1918 over 1917, it is a further indication of the general world-wide curtailment of gold production, and the steady decline in production everywhere that is going on and will continue until some rational means is found to stimulate production, or until conditions return to normal.The subject of relief for the gold miner has received attention in all parts of the world, particularly in the United States and South Africa in the past few years, but in spite of all the plane that have been formulated to remedy the situation none have yet been adopted anywhere, due mainly to great danger of tampering with the gold standard. In the United. States a plan has advanced by H. N. Lawrie of the American Mining Congress to tax the new gold entering into manufacture of jewelry or the arts in general, as furnishing some measure of increased compensation to unprofitable gold mining.Gold production in Australia, as indication by figures issued by the Australian Mines department, shows a marked decrease, and for the first ten months of 1919 amounted to 914,957 ounces against 1,073,317 ounces for a similar period in 1918. Western Australia produces about two thirds of all the gold rained on that continent. The total gold production of Australia for 1919 will reflect the universal decrease in output.Ever since June 7, when the embargo on the export of gold Was lifted, there has been steady and heavy outflow of gold from this country, as a consequence of which considerable gold accumulated during the war has been exported. This field study evaluated a newer and older dozer at a construction site. Both dozers performed similar activities in the same location within the construction site. Two operators participated in this study. One operator used the older equipment and the other operator used the newer equipment. Jolting and jarring measurements were taken at the seat/operator interface and at the floor of the cab. The result of this field study indicates that the newer dozer was better than the older dozer.

The increased effectiveness of a two-phase spray system (TPSS) over a single-phase spray system (SPSS) for dust suppression is reported in several laboratory studies. The dust collection efficiencies of SPSS and TPSS were studied in a model experimental longwall gallery facility at Pittsburgh Research Laboratory at NIOSH (USA). The experimental design consisted of two factors: pressure, and airflow. Each factor had three levels. SPSS experiments were conducted at only one pressure (1035 kPa) which is nearly 1.5 times higher than the highest air and water pressure for TPSS experiments. The results of the study are presented in this paper. While it appears that TPSS performed better than SPSS, the data is not sufficiently conclusive on this aspect. The differing spray characteristics of the chosen TPSS and SPSS nozzles did not allow a direct comparison of the two systems. In the TPSS arrangement, considerably greater turbulence in airflow is created around the shearer; it is likely that at least in the immediate vicinity of the tailgate drum, there is a roll back of the dust/mist cloud into the walkway. Therefore, positioning of the personnel upwind of the tailgate drum is necessary to avoid high dust exposures. The rate of decrease in concentration with TPSS is higher than that with SPSS. This may be due to the greater atomization of the water. The test set-up did not allow the study of conditions when coal is cut from tail to head where the potential for personal exposure is high. Changes in the experimental design are necessary to overcome some of the reasons expected for the inconclusive results.

Vibration measurements at the workplace are often complicated and expensive. The assessment of the risk in conformity with EC Directive 2002/44/EC “Vibration” (which lays down the minimum requirements of laws in Europe for occupational safety and health) can therefore be carried out on the basis of an estimate based on information from manufacturers as well as by measurement conforming to ISO 5349. The characteristic values (emission values) determined by manufacturers in laboratory conditions may deviate from the exposure values measured at source at the workplace. Equally, deviations may arise as a result of the delay in the changeover of test methods from the single axis of measurement to the total vibration value for the three axes of measurement conforming to ISO 20643. To prevent faulty estimates, the manufacturer’s information has to be corrected by a tool-related factor in accordance with CEN/TR 15350. By taking the example of masonry and stone working machines, the empirically determined tool-related correction factor is checked and confirmed. Methods Vibration measurements were carried out in accordance with ISO 5349 in practical application conditions on 10 selected typical eccentric and orbital sanders, concrete and disc grinders as well as on wall chasers and stone saws. Results The total vibration value obtained for the investigated tools rangedfrom ahv = 3.6 m/s² to ahv = 11.6 m/s². When the values from the practical measurements are compared with the manufacturer’s vibration values, the underestimation of the risk occurring in some cases can be largely compensated for by the tool-related factors conforming to CEN/TR 15350 (see Figure 1).

7. Hoisting Systems Hoists used solely for emergency escape use should above all, be simple and dependable. The hoist systems' motive power should be independent of all other mine equipment so that only an emergency in the immediate vicinity of the hoist will render it inoperative. The hoist should receive the same high level of inspection as is normal with any other man hoisting system. It should be operated at regular intervals, and must include sufficient safety devices to ensure safe operation when hoisting men. Of equal importance, however, safety devices must be included to safeguard the hoist system from in¬advertant damage due to inspection, maintenance or operator error In an emergency situation the hoist operator will be under considerable stress and the system must be simple and foolproof to operate. Under normal circumstances the hoist will only be operated during the regular inspection cycle. Because of this very low operational use rate, certain requirements, normally associated with man hoisting, can be relaxed. In particular the wire rope installation requirements, in terms of drum and sheave diameter and fleet angles, can be reduced provided that rope inspection during the system life is maintained at a high level. The following section includes recommended guidelines for emergency hoist system design, installation, operation, maintenance and inspection A summary of available hoisting equipment and components is included in Appendix C. The Code of Federal Regulations Title 30, Parts 56, 57, 75, and 77 require that detonators and explosives be separated by four inches of hardwood or equivalents when transported together in mines. This standard was developed to protect the explosives from initiation by the more sensitive detonators. The research reported here is an attempt to quantify the fire protection offered by four inches of red oak and other materials. Boxes with a volume of 6.75 cubic feet were made from four-inch thick rough green oak (RGO), two-inch thick RGO plied, two-inch thick #1 common (dried) red oak plied, and a metal/plywood composite. These and boxes meeting the Institute of Makers of Explosives' (IME) Safety Library Publication No. 22 were tested in bonfires. The boxes were instrumented with thermocouples, filled with detonators, and placed over a kerosene fire imparting about 16 kilowatts per square meter heat flux for up to 3 hours. Tests showed that the wood boxes protected the detonators for over an hour with variations between the different trials. In the IME 22 container tests, detonators began exploding in as little as 17 minutes in one test and not for 2-/12 hours in another test. Detonators in the metal/plywood boxes began to explode in about 15 minutes but with minor alterations, were able to contain the detonators. The test results show that the exterior of an IME 22 container significantly affects its thermal properties. Defects in the form of cracks and the manner in which the container is closed have a significant effect on the performance of a detonator container in a fire.

Experience, it is said, is the best teacher. Some experiences, however, should be shared so that no one else will ever have to live through them again. The fire at the Sunshine Mine is one such experience. ?Hard-rock mines don?t burn.? The Sunshine Mine near Kellogg, ID, was the nation?s premier silver producer for many years. In 1972, the mine was nearly 6,000 feet deep, contained hundreds of miles of worked-out areas, and employed nearly 500 people. Because of its depth and the type of host rock for the silver (unburnable quartzite), the general thinking of the day was that fires in mines such as the Sunshine were impossible, because ?hard-rock mines don?t burn.? What wasn?t really considered was that timber supports, foam insulation, and mining equipment do burn and that the carbon monoxide gas produced by burning is far more deadly than fire itself. Thus, no one was prepared when, on May 2, 1972, a fire of un-known origin broke out below the 3100 level of the mine. Before long, 173 miners on the day shift were trapped by thick, black smoke. By the time the fire was out, 91 miners had died, and the Sunshine Mine Fire became known as one of the worst mine disasters of the 20th century. It became the catalyst for passage of the Metal/Nonmetal Health and Safety Act of 1977, which applied the same federal safety standards to hard-rock mines as those regulating coal. Mandated safety training, mine inspections, and equipment standards were brought into force.

This pamphlet and the enclosed video describe a safe, effective and economical method for removing dust from work clothes. Background Information Dusty work clothes can increase a worker’s exposure to respirable dust. Respirable dust is usually considered to be particles having an aerodynamic diameter of 10 microns or less and able to enter and deposit in the gas-exchange region of the human lung. A former U.S. Bureau of Mines report documented a 10-fold increase in worker dust exposure on a number of separate occasions from dusty work clothes.* It was found that once clothes become contaminated, they are a continual dust source until cleaned. The only MSHA approved method to clean work clothes requires a HEPA-filter vacuuming system which is very time consuming and difficult to perform effectively. Therefore, most workers use a single air hose (not MSHA approved) which can elevate dust levels for the worker, co-workers, and the work environment. A substantial amount of engineering technology has been developed that, when applied, can significantly lower respirable dust exposures of workers at mineral processing plants. But even with these improvements, some workers continue to exceed their permissible exposure limit. Elevated exposures increase the potential for developing debilitating or fatal lung diseases. ?e clothes cleaning method described within is an example of a continuing effort to reduce the potential for developing these lung diseases. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), in cooperation with mine operators, conducted a study of heat stress exposures among mine rescue workers in underground mines. Mine rescue workers face extreme heat loads as they enter hot and poorly ventilated environments, particularly when they are wearing breathing apparatuses. The burden of wearing a closed-circuit breathing apparatus (CCBA), the inability to drink fluids for extended periods of time, and the potential for ventilation disruptions and fires combine to increase the risk of heat illness during a response to an emergency. In this research, ambient environmental conditions and heat strain indicators were measured using conventional ventilation monitoring tools during mine rescue training exercises. Heat strain was measured with an ingestible temperature-sensing pill that measured core temperature continuously. In addition, a heart-rate monitoring chest strap was used to indicate physical strain resulting from physical activity and heat. Both core temperature and heart rate data were transmitted to a remote recorder worn by a rescuer and time-stamped. Team activities were also observed to determine the contribution of work rate to a person’s total heat load. The effectiveness of several engineering controls, such as cooling the air inhaled by rescuers through an apparatus, wearing cooling vests, and supplying water through the CCBA masks, were investigated. Administrative controls, such as limiting the duration of exposure and controlling the work rate through forced-rest regimens, were also evaluated. Results to date are discussed, and tools for evaluating team condition and estimating the length of time it would be safe for rescuers to work are proposed.

To develop and design a bit that will rapidly drill smooth and precise instrumentation holes in soft rock. Approach Use a one-piece bit made by combining a drag bit and a diamond bit. Because a smooth-walled borehole with a precise diameter is needed for borehole pressure cells (BPC) and other borehole instruments, a diamond bit is usually used. However, diamond bit drilling is slow, and the bit will tend to bind when squeezing ground is encountered. On the other hand, the drag bit will cut faster, but the walls of the drill hole will be rough and the diameter will not be as precise. The combination will provide a bit which penetrates as rapidly as a drag bit, but retains the smooth-wall and precise borehole diameter of a diamond bit. How It Works A three-foot-length of EW-size drill rod is centered in a diamond bit by welding it to three equally-positioned spacers at each end of the bit. A drag bit is attached to the EW rod with a standard EW-to-drag bit adapter as shown in the diagram. Three equally-spaced diamond inserts are set to the desired hole size and welded to the diamond bit barrel behind the crown. These inserts increase the smoothness and precision of the hole by cut-ting away any hole closure. Three equally-spaced shims are set approximately 0.020-inch under the overall insert diameter size and welded to the rear of the diamond bit barrel. The combination bit should be used on a diamond drill with either water, mist or air as the coolant.

Maintain good blowing face ventilation while taking deeper cuts with a radio-remote, scrubber-equipped miner. Approach A six week in-mine study of face ventilation effectiveness was made by comparing the existing MSHA-approved blowing curtain setback distance of 25 ft with brattice set back distances of up to 50 ft. Effectiveness was determined by measuring methane levels at the face and in the immediate return. How It Works Blowing ventilation systems are commonly used in mines because the high velocity air stream created by these systems rapidly mixes with and dissipates methane generated during the cutting of coal. A drawback to blowing ventilation is that the work area is placed in return air and this may create dust compliance problems for the shuttle car and mining machine operator. To clean dust from the return a number of mining machine manufacturers supply dust scrubbers built into the machine. Dust-laden air is drawn into ducting at the front of the mining machine's boom and is ducted to a scrubbing unit located on the machine's main frame. The clean air from the scrubber is discharged as a high velocity jet toward the return, generally from the left fender of the mining machine. When taking cuts deeper than 20 to 25 ft with a scrubber-equipped machine, the machine's discharge is in by the mouth of the blowing curtain, creating a concern by mine workers that a loss of air to the face could result. However, Bureau of Mines research found that the push or throw of air toward the return by the scrubber discharge jet allows good face ventilation to be maintained with extended curtain setbacks.

Recognizing the dynamic nature and possible range of toxic concentrations in the impending fume cloud prior to undertaking explosive blasting can reduce potential hazards and mitigate related incidents. The scaled cloud model was formulated to predict the relevant (major) toxic components in fume clouds released by nonideal mining explosives used for surface blasting. Natural turbulence unceasingly disperses the toxic molecules, widening (inflating) the fume cloud while diluting the concentrations, ultimately rendering nonhazardous conditions. The threshold cloud size depends upon the type and quantity of total explosives used and the cloud's thermodynamic condition. Though the scaled theory works for fume clouds with irregular (odd) shape, an equivalent upright cylindrical form is useful for rendering simple riskhazard scenarios. The cylinder's projection downward on the underlying terrain yields a circular 'shadow' marking the region threatened, thereby permitting a rough estimation of the potential hazards, were the cloud to settle down there. Wind causes the cloud to drift while it expands, so the shadow travels while it grows, until the risk hazard process is truncated at the nonhazardous threshold. The overall relative fume toxicity (RFT) is taken from the traditional Russian RFT rule, which utilizes only the two fume components that tend to dominate the resultant toxicity: carbon monoxide (CO) and total nitrogen oxides (NOx). Tabulated constants that characterize the fume spectrum in the cloud model were resolved for ammonium nitrate (94%) with fuel oil (6%), ANFO-94/6, using a refined thermodynamic work-principle. Comparable results were found with the reduction factor technique, when test results from the underground fume chamber were readjusted to reflect nominal field shooting conditions.

Knowledge of the water content of oil-bearing formations is important in petroleum-reservoir evaluation work. Electric logging provides a means for making reliable estimates of water content if resistivity-saturation relationships representative of the formations are available. Relationships can be determined in the laboratory by a number of methods. This report describes and presents results of a laboratory investigation conducted at the Bureau of Mines Appalachian Experiment Station, Morgantown, W. Va. (1) to evaluate an evaporation method of attaining water saturations in sandstone samples when determining resistivity-saturation relationships and (2) to compare saturation exponents derived from data obtained, using different methods of achieving water saturations. A series of tests was conducted to determine the effect of evaporation on salinity distribution within the core specimen. Results of these tests show that a zone of high salinity was set up at the surface of a sample during evaporation and that long periods were required for the sample to reach resistance equilibrium after evaporation had ceased. Equilibrium time ranged from several minutes to several days, depending on the sample size and the technique used. The high-salinity zone was removed from the sample by using auxiliary porous material in capillary contact with the sample surface during evaporation. Salinity determinations and resistance measurements indicate that, at saturations greater than the minimum interstitial values, the mechanism of flow during evaporation was one of moisture migration mainly as a liquid from the interior of the test specimens to their exterior surfaces. The concentration of the contained brine remained essentially unchanged, except for a narrow zone near the evaporating surfaces.

Miners at noncoal surface mining operations are often exposed to high levels of respirable dust. In an effort to lower the respirable dust exposure of these surface miners, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been conducting research to address this problem in a practical and economically viable manner. One successful effort deals with lowering the dust exposure of equipment operators in enclosed cabs. Many types of surface mining equipment utilize enclosed cabs to protect equipment operators from dust exposure. Normally when the equipment is new, the cabs are fairly airtight. These tightly sealed cabs, combined with good filtration systems, generally provide the operator with good dust protection. However, most mining equipment is older, and as aging occurs, many components of the enclosure deteriorate. The structural integrity of the cab diminishes and the effectiveness of the air filtration system fails. NIOSH has been successfully researching costs-effective methods to improve both filtration effectiveness and cab integrity of these older cabs in order to provide a healthier work environment for equipment operators. Dust sampling records indicate that drill operators and helpers have the highest dust exposure of all workers at surface mining operations. Since much of the overburden contains a high percentage of silica, the health hazard associated with this dust can be even more serious. NIOSH research is addressing techniques to lower respirable dust levels at surface drilling operations. [Notwithstanding the fact that it is now fairly generally recognized that widespread explosions can be almost absolutely prevented in coal mines by efficient rock-dusting and that this rock-dusting can be done thoroughly at a cost which should seldom exceed 1 cent per ton of coal mined, a recent survey of the situation by the Safety Division of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, following a similar survey by the Bureau in the fall of 1925, shows that while some progress is being made by our coal-mining people, many entire mining communities are lamentably slow in taking advantage of one of the most effective safeguards available. Much of the information as to the extent of rock-dusting was obtained through the various State inspection departments. Table 1 shows that in the fall of 1925 about 92 coal companies in the United States were using rock-dust ad that in the summer of 1927 the number had increased to 239, or about 160 per cent increase. Similarly, from the fall of 1925 to the summer of 1927 the number of mines using rock-dust increased from 177 to 463, or about 160 per cent increase. This appears to be a decidedly healthy increase, but when it is considered that in 1926 (the last date for which figures are available) there were 7,141 bituminous mines operating and that there were only 463 or 61 par cent, which were even reported to Ice using rock-dust to any extent whatever, the forgoing figures as to progress are by no means impressive or even satisfactory.]

The objective of these projects is to provide an ordered and sequenced series of advance toward the Bureau's overall goal of providing the systems technology required to create a more healthful and safer working environment for the Nation's mining and minerals processing workersINTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines conducts a balanced, continuing in-house research and development program to accelerate systematic improvements in health and safety conditions in U.S. mines. Part I of this report outlines the Bureau's present in-house effort to all interested parties; in particular, potential contractors can refer to it when submitting USP's (unsolicited proposals), thus avoiding proposing research that duplicates work being performed by the Bureau.It is the policy of the Bureau of Mines to utilize as fully as possible the capabilities of the private sector in minerals research, and to that endPart II of this report outlines the Bureau's current projected contract research needs.The projects presented were planned at the beginning of the fiscal year and are subject to change based on emerging priorities and availability of funds. Contingencies may require that a significant portion of the program be deferred into fiscal year 1983 (FY 83) or beyond. THE ENORMOUS contrast between the mineral economy of Cuba in 1963 and in 1958 was the result of the overall Political changed to which the total economy of the country was intimately lined. Creation of the Cuban Mining Institute (Instituto Cubano de la Minería) to direct all mining activities in the country was an early act of the new Government after the revolution on January 1, 1959. During the next 2 years, the Government confiscated foreign holdings,2 including Unite States investments exceeding $1 billion in value. Foreign mining and metallurgical technicians-predominately from Communist areas-were brought in to reorganize the mineral industries. On January 3, 1961, diplomatic relations between Cuba and the United States were severe and then on May 2, Cuba announced its full-fledged membership in the so-called Communist Bloc. Fifty-four international treaties assured Cuba of Communist economic support, technical and financial assistance, machinery, raw materials, and manufactures. The Soviet Union agreed to buy some Cuban mineral products, and Czechoslovakia stated that it would buy all mineral production offered for the next 20 years, but in both cases at prices said to be much lower than the world market. The mineral productivity segment of the mineral economy during and since the period of political metamorphosis, has withstood the political disruption better than has the economy as a whole, but with no direct measure of the magnitude of its cost. The overall economic record is marked with steady deterioration; the annual average per capita income has dropped from $374 in 1957 to $185 in 1963, when Cuba's deficit with the Soviet Union alone reached an admitted $1 billion.

From the chemist's point of view it would be ideal if specifications for coke for any stated purpose could be written on the basis of chemical composition and burning characteristics. Unfortunately this is not possible. In fact, the physical properties of a coke are often of such major importance as to render any specified chemical requirements totally inadequate to show the quality of coke desired. For example, a furnace coke may admirably fill all chemical requirements, such as for low phosphorus, sulphur, moisture, and high fixed carbon, and still be too soft to support the burden of the furnace without excessive crushing. Again, a domestic coke though a good fuel as judged from Chemical analysis, may be of unmarketable size. Thus one can not define the quality of a coke for a specified purpose without taking into account both its chemical and physical characteristics even when this has been done the specification may fail because neither coke user nor producer can accurately define by quantitative tests the qualities most desired. In other words, there is need of accurate test methods for measuring the properties of coke and, what is equally important, for correlating the results with the behavior of the coke in use. Coke quality is determined by the kind of coal used, the coking process, and the type of equipment used in the coking process. Chemical analysis of the coals, together with small-scale coking tests, will give a good indication of their suitability; but, in general, coke must be produced on an industrial scale and tested in the equipment for which it is intended before conclusive information as to its quality is obtained.

Dear Mine Operator, Training for new employees, refresher training for new employees, refresher training, and new task training can mean the difference between life and death for workers. Part 46 spells out how you can develop a training program to protect workers for on-the-job hazards. Together, labor, industry, and the U.S. Department of Labor reached a milestone with the development and publication of Part 46. We want to continue working together toward the next milestone, October 2000, when the regulations take effect. We want to make sure you have all the information you need about these new training requirements. Throughout the next 12 months, MSHA personnel will be holding regional meetings across the country, delivering information and sample training plans to your operation, and offering you help to develop your plan. If you are among the many operators who are already providing training to your workers, keep up the good work. The rule will tell you exactly what is expected. If you currently have no training program, we can help you develop one. A brochure is being distributed, which highlights the main provisions of the rule. It is designed to introduce the rule to you.
