Methods of chemical analysis of clays for the following constituents are presented: moisture, ignition loss Fe2O3, TiO2, P2O5, CaO, MgO, Na2O, K2O, total. carbon, carbonate carbon total sulfur, soluble salts, and soluble sulfate. In these procedures the attainment of accuracy has been the primary consideration sample was taken to insure accuracy, with ordinary precautions. The procedures may therefore be somewhat somewhat and will not be suited for routine work on samples for which the approximate analysis is already known and in which the need for accuracy is not very exacting. However, the method shod be as a set of detailed directions, that have been tested and shown to yield accurate results with clays and other aluminum silicate minerals. Among these minerals are clays of all types, bentonite bauxite, shale, brick; soil, calcined refractory, and sand. Although some of the methods are Unusual, no particular claim is laid to originality. The material was drawn frail many sources, put together and tested.

The Bureau of Mines has completed an investigation of the effectiveness of methane drainage in the Lower Sunnyside Coalbed at Kaiser Steel Corp.'s Sunnyside No. 1 Mine in Utah. Most of the previous at- tempts to drain methane gas using long horizontal holes were conducted in the Eastern Coal Province. From the high degree of success realized in these efforts and the large body of knowledge gained from associated research, it seemed natural to extend the technology to western coalfields. Previous work had indicated that properties affecting gas drainage were variable in the Sunnyside Coalbed. In an attempt to characterize these properties, four degasification holes were drilled from the out- side entries of an advancing section. The holes were drilled to lengths of 780, 1,680, 1,315, and 1,047 ft and produced initial flow rates of 50,000, 180,000, 340,000, and 240,000 f t3/d, respectively. A total of over 300 million f t3 of commercial-quality gas has been removed from the Sunnyside Coalbed. The four holes have reduced face emissions by 78 pct.

Because several new and unusual synthetic minerals were found in the system MgO-MgF₂ - SiO2 with Li * , or Nat a similar system with Geo₂ replacing Sio , plus Lit was investigated . In addition to the expected compounds of germanium , Ge - fluor - hectorite and a Ge - fluor- chrysotile were synthesized . Protoamphibole was not observed . Data are given for 69 compositions prepared in the system MgO- MgF₂ - Ge02 at 6.94 percent LiF .

An infrared absorbance technique is described for analyzing anodic gases produced during the electrowinning of uranium , thorium , and rare - earth metals in molten fluorides . Typical components determined qualitatively in a gas sample are CO , CO₂ , CF4 , C₂ Fe , C3F8 , COS , CS₂ , and SiF4 . About 20 minutes are required to record and interpret the spectrogram , and report quantitative results for CO, CO₂ , CF4 , and SiF . The procedure is used for control during electrolysis .

Cerium metal was electrowon in a fluoride bath from cerous oxide and tapped from the cell during prolonged operation . Electrolyte constituents were CeF , BaF₂ , and LiF. Twenty- seven pounds of metal of 99.8 percent purity were produced at a rate of 3 pounds per hour and tapped from the cell . Principal impurities were molybdenum , aluminum , oxygen , and carbon . The operating parameters , such as electrode geometry , bath compositions , and oxide feed rate , were investigated . Anode reactions were found to be important factors in cell operation . Stable cerous oxide reacted more uniformly at the anode surface than ceric oxide . Electrowinning was conducted in crucible hearths consisting of both frozen electrolyte and molybdenum metal . Both materials proved satisfactory and did not react with the molten cerium . Stable cerous oxide was prepared by carbothermic reduction and used as a feed material . Cell design proved to be an important factor in continuous cell operation . Complementary to the investigations of electrowinning of cerium , the metal was purified by electrorefining in a chloride electrolyte .

Conversion of euxenite concentrate to sulfates with sulfuric acid and solvent extraction of the yttrium- rare - earth mixture with EHPA were studied to determine extraction and separation characteristics . Digestion with 3.5 pounds of 96 percent sulfuric acid per pound of concentrate at 336 ° C for 4 hours resulted in an easily handled product with a yield in excess of 98 per- A thorium- free product was obtained by calcining the sulfated material for 3.5 hours at 650 ° C prior to leaching with water . Di ( 2 - ethylhexyl ) phosphoric acid solvent is an effective extractant with preference for cerium ( IV ) and heavy - group rare - earth elements including yttrium . Separation of complex rare - earth mixtures into light- and heavy - group fractions is feasible , and these fractions can be further processed to isolate ytterbium , neodymium , and dysprosium by changing processing conditions to obtain separation factors greater than two between these and adjacent elements .

I have been asked to speak briefly about recent progress in the mining industry of the United States, and to touch on the general advancement of en- gineering science as applied to mining. By recent, I shall mean within the past 20 or 30 years. Such a period includes a great many of the changes which are of particular interest to the present generation of engineers, and the undergraduates of today will hardly turn back farther than the beginning of the present century in their study of develop- ment of methods and processes. Also, my own professional life spans this period, and I have seen or have been aware of most of these developments as they were taking place. In my review of developments, for the sake of simplicity and clarity, I shall deal separately with improvements in metal mining, coal mining, mechanical and electrical machinery for mines, metallurgy, petroleum engineering, and safety practices. Under each of these headings I have set down what appear to me to be the outstanding changes brought about during the past 2 or 3 decades. Other points will occur to other engineers; I do not represent that the following re- view is complete; it is only intended to be suggestive. In general, improvements in mining and metallurgical practices have come gradually, the charges being effected little by little, simultaneously in widely scattered places, and through the experience and inventive genius of many men. These changes have has small beginnings, and are generally the cumulative result of many steady and unsensational progressions, which still continue. What we today might be inclined to consider the culmination of a series of betterments in mining is, of course, but an instantaneous phase of developments which will continue in the future at even a more rapid pace than they have in the past. We are looking at but a flesh of a moving picture, with an endless reel to come after we finally leave the theatre. Behind all the changes in the mineral industry, the driving force has been the increasing demand of an expanding population for more metals and minerals with which to advance civilization. "The captive bubble and sessile drop contact angle techniques have been used to evaluate the hydrophobicity of petrographically identified coal macerals. The magnitude of the contact angle on vitrinite is shown to be a function of coal rank ( %C, %0 and % vitrinite reflectance), increasing with increasing rank to a maximum for low volatile bituminous rank coals then decreasing for anthracite. The least data scatter is found when vitrinite reflectance is used as a rank parameter. Contact angles measured or estimated for other discrete macerals, indicate a variation in hydrophobicity based on coal type. These data correlate well with known flotation results. Coal is a heterogeneous mixture of plant remains and associated minerals that have undergone chemical and physical changes by biological and geological processes. These plant remains form coal macerals, discrete organic entities in the coal which have characteristic chemical and physical properties. As the differing chemical nature of each maceral will affect its behaviour in processes such as carbonization the separation of macerals during coal preparation may provide an important asset in coal utilization.Separation of some of the macerals based on specific gravity has been achieved in the laboratory, and by Sun and Cohen , in a study of two Pennsylvania bituminous coal preparation plants. It was indicated that the lighter exinites report almost exclusively to the clean coal while the denser inertinites are concentrated in the higher gravity fractions. The Longwy-Burstlein process6 took advantage of the difference in hardness or friability of the macerals by using impact breakage followed by screening to remove the more friable vitrain,clarain and fusain. The remaining durain, often high in spore content, was then recrushed. The re-mixed fractions produced the optimum size for obtaining the best coke strength for a particular coal.Separation or concentration of rnacerals by froth flotation largely depends on differences in the hydrophobicity of the macerals. Sun and Cohen 5 . indicated an order of decreasing floatability as exinite, vitrinite and inertinite, while a Russian study (as cited by Brown 7 ) showed that vitrains floated more readily than the duller types. More recently, Hirt and Aplan8 showed that 'pseudovitrinite' floats somewhat faster than does vitrinite while fusinite floats very slowly. Olson and A plan found that vitrinite floated easily while substantial quantities of the non-floated coal contained fusinitic material. Burdon noted that vitrinite is more floatable than semifusinite, and Sarker et a/. 11 have shown that vitrinite is selectively concentrated by froth flotation and oil agglomeration. Sun indicated that flotation, based on his calculated floatability index, should decrease in the order clarain, vitrain, fusain and durain; while Horsley and Smith 13 indicated the decrease to be: vitrain, clarain, durain and fusain. These differences can be attributed to the specific coals used in each study and to the individual macerals composing each coal type within a given coal."

This Bureau of Mines report summarizes the results of a study of mine inspection records covering 2,200 mining installations over a 3-year period ending December 1974. Tables show the relative frequency of violations of certain provisions of the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 in particular areas of concern, such as circuit breakers, grounding, and permissibility. Examples of past use of the data and analyses are presented.

The thermal conductivities of six rocks were measured by the transient line source method over the temperature range of -850 to 1,500° F. Close-fitting ceramic probes were used in 0.065-inch-diameter holes drilled through 5-to 6-inch-thick rock specimens. Taconite, granite, quartzite, and basalt were used in the tests. The method yields absolute data and is applicable to both laboratory and in situ measurements.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated two real-time light-scattering dust monitors by measuring their response to Pittsburgh Seam coal dust and Arizona road dust (ARD). Both monitors, the model PDS-l, a personal dust sensor, and the model PCD-l, a digital dust indicator, are made in Japan by Sibata Scientific Ltd. Tests were conducted inside a laboratory aerosol chamber designed to maintain a uniform spatial distribution of the test dust. PDS-l and PCD-l measurements of concentrations for each test dust were averaged over 4-h test periods and compared with simultaneous gravimetric measurements. Both dust monitors responded linearly with mass concentration with both coal dust and ARD. However, the linear response of the PDS-l differed from that of the PCD-l for both dusts.

"SummaryAs part of an effort.to understand the mechanics of fine fragment formation in coal, which is important in studies of respirable dust due to mining, fracture toughness measurements and the strain energy density (SEO) theory were applied to calculate the crush zone size under a cutting tool in coal. This · zone is the major source of fine fragments in the 1 to 10 µm size range. The model used in these calculations is a boundary element program containing a failure criterion based on the SEO theory. The boundary element program calculates linear elastic stresses at numerous points in the coal material ahead of a cutting bit. These stresses arc then input to a subroutine called critical ftaw length and orientation (CFLO) which uses the SED theory to determine the CFLO for a small crack at the boundary element stress computation point. The extent of crushing is based on earlier postulates about . the role of inherent flaws in a fragmentation process. To form 1 to 10 µm fragments requires firstly a local stress strong enough to activate flaws with a characteristic length less than 1 to 10 µm and secondly, a flaw density sufficient to provide an average spacing between flaws also on the order of 1 to 10 µm. The locus of active lO µm ftaws represents the maximum possible extent of fine fragmentation in the 10 µm or less size range assuming that a sufficient inherent flaw density exists. The approach offers a first order approximation to the extent of crushing under a tool tip. The size and shape of the crush zone volume is affected by the attack angle and geometry of the tool.IntroductionFine fragment generation in the 1 to 10 µm size range under the action of a generic coal cutting tool may be explained on the basis of fracture mechanics which suggests two major sources of fine fragments: first in a crush zone near the tool tip and second by shear fracturing. along major macrocrack surfaces (Zipf and Bieniawski, 1988a). In this paper, fracture toughness measurements and the strain energy density theory are used to calculate the crush zone size. This zone represents the major source of fine fragments in the 1 to 10 µm size range and understanding the mechanical factors controlling its size represents a first step toward using fracture mechanics to characterize the ·tendency of various coals to produce undesirable fine fragments."

"Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFa) and thromboxane A2 (TXA2) are major products of the activated alveolar macrophage and serve as key mediators of lung injury. In order to determine if the synthesis ofTXA2 and the release ofTNFa are associated, the production of these inflammatory agents by the human alveolar macrophage (AM), as a result of activation by lipopolysaccharide (LPS), was assessed in the absence and presence of the thromboxane synthase inhibitors UK 38,485 (Dazmegrel) and OKY 046. UK 38,485 and OKY 046 inhibited both LPS-stimulated TXA2 production and TNFa release in a dose-dependent manner. Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) production was not increased by UK 38,485 or OKY 046. Neither LPS nor UK 38,485 had any effect on LT84 production by AM. Neither UK 38,485 or OKY 046 had any effect on LPS-stimulated interleukin-I beta release. However, the TXA2 mimetic, U46619, did not stimulate TNFa release by AM either in the absence or presence of UK 38,485. These findings suggest that 1) UK 38,485 and OKY 046 are inhibitors of both TXA2 production and TNFa release by activated human AM, 2) UK 38,485 probably does not exert its inhibitory action on TNFa release through effects on eicosanoid production and 3) the possibility that TNFa- and TXA2-induced lung injury may be subject to amelioration by imidazole-based compounds should be further evaluated.IntroductionTumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFa), produced by monocytes and macrophages, is a potent peptide mediator of lung injury (1,2). The exaggerated release of TNFa has been implicated in the etiology of acute lung reactions such as septic shock of bacterial or viral origin (3,4). The role of TNFa is expressed primarily through its ability to activate a variety of cell types within the lung environment including polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs, ref. 5), type II epithelial cells (6) and fibroblasts (7). The role of lipid mediators in lung disease has also been extensively characterized (1). In particular, the relationship between pulmonary inflammation and fibrosis and the production of oxygenated derivatives of arachidonic acid (here termed ""eicosanoids"") appears to be a key factor in a variety of disease processes in the lung (8). The alveolar macrophage (AM) synthesizes primarily prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). thromboxane A2 (TXA2) and leukotriene 84 (LT84, ref. 9). These eicosanoids have been shown to produce a variety of effects in the lung including bronchial smooth muscle dilatation (PGE2, ref. 10), vascular smooth muscle contraction and platelet aggregation (TXA2, ref. 11) and oedema and immune cell extravasation (LT84, ref. 12)."

Carbonizing properties of the principal coal beds of Butler County, Pa., are described in this report by the Bureau of Mines. Eight samples, representing the Upper Freeport, Lower Freeport, Upper Kittanning, Middle Kittanning, Lower Kittanning, Clarion, and Brookville beds, were carbonized at 900° C. by the Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (BM-AGA) method. Butler County coals rank as high-volatile A bituminous and are generally characterized by high sulfur content compared with Appalachian coals used for industrial coking. If cleaned, the Brookville and one sample of Upper Freeport coal would be acceptable as the major component of metallurgical coking blends. The other Butler County coals tested would be unsuitable for this purpose because of either excessive sulfur or poor coking properties.

This report summarizes the results of laboratory tests of five samples of low-grade phosphate ores from Idaho. The laboratory test work has demonstrated that by grinding, desliming, and flotation a portion of the siliceous gangue can be removed. The highly carbonaceous ores responded successfully to treatment after preroasting, to produce a plus-30-percent-P205 product. It has been found that highly siliceous ores, as represented by the samples treated, are more readily amenable to concentration than ores high in calcium carbonate. Of the five samples tested, four were amenable to concentration to a product containing over 30 percent P205. One sample, from the Conda, second bed, was not amenable to mineral-dressing treatment to produce a plus-25-percent-P205 product.

The Minah silver-lead mine in the Wickes district, Jefferson County, Mont., produced substantial quantities of silver-lead ores in the 1890's. The mine has been abandoned since the "silver panic" of the early 1900's. As a part of the Bureau of Mines: program to develop new sources of lead to overcome the growing shortages of that metal, a development project was started at the Minh mine in April 1946 and continued until June 1947, during which 5,600 feet of angledozer trenching and. 1,093 feet of core drilling were completed on the main vein and nearby parallel veins: As a result of this work, interest in the property was stimulated and private operators are now engaged in reopening the mine. This report discusses the past history, geologic setting, and the recent and early operations of the mine.

"Electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy has been employed to· examine the role of tetraperoxochromate( V) ions (Cro:-) and other Cr(V) species in the generation of hydroxyl (OH) radicals in the reaction of Cr(VI) with H2O 2 in biological media. In contrast to earlier suggestions, the present ESR studies using crystalline K3CrO8 as a source of Cro:- show that decomposition of Cro:- in water or in H2O 2 does not generate significant amounts of OH radicals. Addition of NADH to a solution containing Cro:- yields a Cr(V)-NADH complex, which readily reacts with H2O 2 to generate OH radicals. Similar results obtained from several other biological reductants, including vitamin B2 , indicate that a vacant coordination site on a Cr(V) complex facilitates its reaction with H2O 2 to generate ""OH radicals. We thus suggest that in biological media, reaction [3] instead of [1] or [2] is the major pathway for the OH radical generation: While the carcinogenic potential of Cr(Vl)-based compounds has been well established via epidemiologic and animal studies (1), the underlying biochemical mechanism is still not well understood (2). In a recent development, however, Kawanishi et al. (3) have reported that hydroxyl (OH)2 radicals might be the key species in the mechanism of Cr(VI) toxicity. As to the mechanism of the ""OH radical formation they suggest that Cr(VI) reacts with cellular hydrogen peroxide (H2O 2) to form the tetraperoxochromate(V) (Crog-) ions, which decompose to produce hydroxyl radicals. It was also suggested (3) that the ""OH radicals thus produced cause genotoxicity via DNA base modification and deoxyribose phosphate backbone alterations. More recently Aiyar et al. (4) reported the detection of OH radicals in the reaction of Cr(VI) with H2O 2 in biological media, including the reaction of ""OH radicals with deoxyguanosine to generate 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine adducts, confirming that ""OH radicals could indeed play a significant role in the mechanism of Cr(VI) toxicity. However, the mechanism for the ""OH generation was not clarified, although the role of Crog- ions as possible precursors was mentioned, somewhat along the lines suggested by Kawanishi et al. (3). The possibility of the participation of Crog- in the ""OH generation has also been indicated by Sugiyama et al. (5), since they mention that vitamin B2 enhances the formation of""OH radicals in the reaction of Cr(VI) with H2O 2 because of the generation of Crog- in the reaction."

Size distributions and concentrations of particulates emitted from diesel engine exhausts were measured with cascade impactors. Samples were taken from the exhaust of two types of engines using three types of fuel and operating under five different engine speed and load conditions. The measured mass median diameters of the diesel particulates were typically about 0.3 um. There was no significant difference in mass median diameter between engines or fuels and only a slight dependence on operating mode. Concentration measurements ranged from 14.2 to 250.9 mg/cu m, and calculated mass outputs, from 64 to 10,000 mg/min. Significant differences in mass output were found between engines, fuels, and especially between different operating modes. The quantity of clean dilution air that would be required to reduce the particulate mass concentration below the 2.0 mg/cu m respirable dust standard for coal mines was greater than the dilution air required to meet the standards for noxious gases for both engines tested.
