"INTRODUCTION Analyses of samples of crude oil from several Texas oil fields have been published from time to time in Bureau of Mines reports, some of which are out of print, but many other analyses of Texas crude oils have not been published. The purpose of this paper is to make available in condensed tabular form under one cover all analyses of the Texas crude oils that have been examined by the Bureau of Mines.DIVISION OF TABLEThe table of analyses is divided into six parts in accordance with the geographic subdivisions of the State. (See fig. 1.) This grouping of the oils corresponds only in a general way with the principal formations in each area from which oil is being produced. In general, the principal oil-producing formations in the Texas Panhandle and West Texas areas are of Permian age; those of North Texas are of Pennsylvanian and older ages; those of the East Texas Basin and of Central Texas are of Cretaceous age; and those of the Texas Gulf Coast are of Eocene and younger ages.For convenience in presentation the name of the geologic age has been assigned to each group of the table although same of the oils included in the group may be of another age.Group 1 includes oils of Permian age produced in the Texas Panhandle area, which comprises the following counties: Dallam, Sherman, Hansford, Ochiltree, Lipscomb, Hartley, Moore, Hutchinson, Roberts, Hemphill, Oldham, Potter, Carson, Gray, Wheeler, Deaf Smith, Randall, Armstrong, Donley, Collingsworth, Parmer, Castro, Swisher, Briscoe, Ball, and Childress."

This volume contains the descriptions of the samples whose analy- ses are published in the preceding volume, Part I of this bulletin. The descriptions have been compiled from the notebooks of the per- sons who collected the samples, have been condensed from accounts given in published reports of the United States Geological Survey, or have been furnished by the collectors themselves. Inasmuch as the descriptions represent the work of many persons during a period of six years, and inasmuch as they were recorded under widely differing conditions, they necessarily vary in fullness of detail. The descriptions are published for two purposes: (1) To prosent such information regarding the character of the coal, the impurities in the beds sampled, and the nature of the roof and the floor of the beds as has a definite bearing on the significance of the analyses of the samples, and (2) to give any supplementary details such as the capacity or the output of a mine, the method of mining and prepar- ing the coal, and the chief uses to which it is put, that may be of assistance to Government engineers or purchasing agents, and to other persons, in preparing specifications and awarding contracts for fuel.

"Dust control in high-production longwalls requires attention to operating practices and ventilation schemes. Several studies have shown that the shearer is the major source of dust on a longwall face. Support movement has not been regarded as a major source of dust in US longwalls. Yet, under certain conditions, 31% of the shearer operator's dust exposure can be due to support movement.Several methods have been developed for the control of shield-generated dust. But the need for better methods is apparent. In this paper, the amount of airborne, respirable dust generated per shield move is estimated from specially designed experiments on longwall faces. Ten experiments were conducted on five longwall faces in four mines. Each experiment involved one face visit and lasted three to six hours. The contribution of shield movement to the airborne, respirable dust concentration immediately downwind of the shield move varied between 0.12 and 1.75 mg/m3 in the five longwall faces. The mass of airborne, respirable dust gener-ated by shield movement was found to vary between 39 and 386 mg per shield move. The results from this study reveal that control of dust from longwall shields requires a combi-nation of approaches involving alternative operating prac-tices, reducing shield dust generation rate, increasing face air flow and decreasing personnel exposure.IntroductionIn 1992, longwall mining accounted for about 36% of US underground coal production, a 240% increase from a decade ago. The absolute longwall tonnages were 46 and 133 Mt (51 and 146 million st), respectively. Compared with room-and¬pillar mining systems, the longwall mining system is charac¬terized by higher recovery, enhanced safety and higher pro¬ductivity.However, personnel dust exposure on a longwall face is higher than in other types of mining. According to Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) data, fewer longwalls were in continuous compliance with the applicable dust standard in 1992 than in 1989.Controlling shearer-generated dust and reduction of per-sonnel exposure to airborne dust have commanded attention in the design of longwall faces, operational practices and ventilation schemes. Studies in the United States and abroad have revealed that support-generated dust can be a major obstacle to compliance under certain conditions (Becker et al., 1989; Bradley et al., 1983; Jankowski and Organiscak, 1983; Jankowski et al., 1990; Organiscak et al., 1985)."

The cheapest method of handling gravel in placer mining operations is by hydraulic mining . In working gravel deposits by hydraulic mining , it is essential that an abundant supply of water under sufficient head can be economically developed and that there is sufficient grade for sluice boxes and for disposal of the tailing . Without dumping facilities , simple hydraulic mining is an impossibility . The cost of hydraulic mining may range from 2 cents a yard under favorable condıtions to 12 or even 20 cents under less favorable conditions and to 35 cents or more a yard in Alaska , according to conditions of operation , and if frozen gravel is encountered . When it is necessary to elevate gravel , the costs may exceed 60 cents a cubic yard . When the natural conditions do not permit of hydraulic pining proper , other methods of elevating the grade are employed , some of which are described below . Bucket dredging has replaced hydraulic mining in importance in California and other states where hydraulic mining was once extensively carried on , and is by far the cheapest method of elevating gravel when mechanical methods are required and the physical conditions are suitable for dredging . Dredging costs vary greatly under the different conditions encountered , and the total amount of gold to be recovered must of course be enough to warrant the cost of a dredge installation . "This report is based primarily on a study of safety conditions and practices followed in the coal mines of Japan. Not all of the coal fields in Japan were studied, but typical mines in the largest producing areas and a fair cross section of coal-mine-safety conditions observed during February to April 1948 are described.Information was obtained through investigations conducted in the mines, discussions with mine-management officials and representatives of labor unions of the various mines visited, and examination of records and statistics from the various offices of the Coal Board of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and from the Coal Association of Japan. Statistical data covering the same subject, obtained from different sources, varied in many respects and apparently were reported inaccurately, but such discrepancies can be attributed to different methods of reporting and compiling statistics.It is difficult to correlate the high fatal and nonfatal injury rates that prevail in Japanese coal mines with the conditions observed in the mines. Virtually all mines visited were attempting to prevent accidents and explosions, by apparently following known safety precautions for the prevention thereof. Some commendable safety innovations were observed at several mines; they indicated that mine officials are giving thought and consideration to hazardous conditions that affect their particular mines.Naturally, the operating officials and management were anxious to impress the writer with their interest in accident prevention and safety. Operating officials were found to be receptive to safety and wore interested in formulating definite safety programs. Some nines had well-planned and well-organized safety programs, which, if put into effect, would contribute greatly toward reduction of accidents.The approach to safety in Japan is quite different from that in the United States, especially the concept of personal responsibility for accidents and the extent to which the individual should be protected against hazards. Management is responsible for providing and maintaining safe working conditions. Collaboration between management and worker, as understood in the United States, does not exist in Japan.Increase in accidents since the cessation of hostilities is the result of unsettled economic conditions in the coal industry, influx of inexperience workers, and breakdown of discipline among the miners, who have been organized into unions. Those unions are greatly influenced by ""leftist"" tendencies.It was observed that the Japanese mine worker is fatalistic by nature and has little, if any, noticable safety consciousness. The most urgent major requirements to reduce accidents in the coal mines are to train the worker in accident prevention and instruct him regarding the inherent hazards of his occupation.Revision of the mining laws would help to reduce accidents if the companies would comply with such laws and provide safer working places and if the workers would cooperate with management and observe and comply with such laws as are enacted for their protection."

"Zipf Jr., R.K. and Bieniawski; Z.T., 1989. A fundamental study of respirable dust generation in coal. Min. Sci. Technol., 9: 87-99Black lung disease in coal miners induced by the formation of fine fragments of coal imposes very high human and direct costs. A fundamental understanding of the fracture processes leading to fine-fragment formation in coal by applying principles of fracture mechanics is presented. A four-step hypothesis is proposed which sequentially describes the mechanics of fine-fragment formation during a generic coal material—coal cutting tool interaction. These steps include: (1) development of a crush zone under the tool tip, (2) macrocrack propagation. (3) shear movement along macrocracks, and (4) additional fragmentation from shear. This model contains two sources of fine fragments, namely crushing under the tool tip and shearing along the macrocrack surfaces. Three critical assumptions are made that require experimentation. First, the coal material must contain flaws of sufficient density and sufficiently small size to liberate fine fragments by crushing. The following conceptual relationships are proposed between flaw size, spacing and fragmentation: first, the active flaw size must be less than the desired particle size and second, the spacing (or density) must be in the order of the particle size. The second major assumption is that a mixed mode fracture theory will describe the initiation and crack growth direction for the microscopic inherent flaws. The third assumption is that some degree of roughness damage, and interlocking exist along the newly formed macrocrack surfaces such that a small amount of shear movement along that surface leads to additional particle formation at a microscopic scale. Preliminary analysis of the mechanical regime under a cutting tool tip places order of magnitude bounds on the stresses strains, cycle time, stress rates and strain rates. Even though the tool moves and loads the coal material with considerable speed, a quasi-static stress analysis is applicable in this region.Introduction.The generation of fine fragments (respirable dust) during various coal mining processes may lead to the incidence of coal workers pneumoconiosis (black lung disease). The human and direct cost of dust-induced illnesses in coal miners is very large. By several. accounts [1,2] the Federal Government paid out about $12 billion to almost 500,000 coal miners and their beneficiaries between 1970 and 1980. In addition, several states and many coal operators have established their own compensation programs at costs ranging from a few cents to several dollars per ton of coal mined [2]. Since 1980, 'the present liability of the Federal disability trust fund has approached $20 billion and the benefit payments exceed $1 billion per year. There .are also hidden costs due to dust, in the form of increased equipment wear and decreased operator productivity, both of which are due to the poor operating environment. Quantifying these costs may be difficult; however, they may be in the same range as the present pneumoconiosis costs. These high human and direct dollar costs may be prevented or reduced through long term research efforts directed at understanding the generation and control of respirable dust and the incidence of black lung disease."

"INTRODUCTION The use of wet drilling with adequate ventilation has largely controlled production of dust in drilling rock; however, in some operations, such as shaft sinking and modern tunnel driving, when each of a number of drills is operating in a small cross-sectional area, it is at times difficult to ventilate well enough to keep the dust concentration within desired limits.Some chemical compounds, known as wetting agents, when added to water in small quantities reduce the interfacial tension and make it possible for the solution to wet dust particles more effectively than water alone.This report presents results of tests on the effectiveness of two wetting solutions in reducing the amount of dust produced by wet drilling in basalt.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe tests were conducted at the Bureau's Mount Weather Testing Adit, Mount Weathe, Va. This Bureau of Mines report tabulates methane emissions from U.S. bituminous coal mines with daily emission rates of at least 100,000 cfd according to States, counties, and coalbeds. Most of the methane emitted is from mines in the Appalachian States. Total daily emissionin 1975 was 216.3 MMcfd, compared with 227.0 MMcfd in 1971 and 214.5 MMcfd in 1973. Thirty counties in nine States had daily methane emissions of 1 MMcfd or more, These emitted 93 percent of the total methane. The highest emissions were from Monongalia County, W. Va,, which accounted for 18.9 percent of the total. This was followed by Marion County, W. Va., 9.6 percent; Buchanan County, Va., 8.5 percent; Jefferson County, Ala., 6.1 percent; and Washington County, Pa., 5.9 percent. The Pittsburgh coalbed emitted 45.7 percent of the total methane, followed by the Pocahontas No. 3 coalbed with 12.9 percent. The report lists 196 mines, of which 60 had daily methane emissions of 1 MMcfd or more. Included in this compilation are the identification and thickness of the coalbed, methane emission, coal production and ventilation rates, number of drifts, shafts, and slopes used for ventilation purposes, shaft depth, age of mine, and gas-to-coal ratio.

Ion elutriation was used to extract silver cyanide complexes and free cyanide from aqueous streams containing up to 10 ppm silver and 5 ppm free cyanide. Screening tests selected nine of 350 different surfactants for further, larger scale experiments. The screening procedure used 0.1 g of each of the surfactants in 300 mL of synthetic wastewater. Air was sparged into the test cell at 50 cc/min. The foam was refluxed during the tests and was not sampled. Samples of the solution were taken at specified intervals and analyzed by wet chemical methods for free cyanide and by atomic absorption for silver content. The most effective surfactants lowered the silver and free cyanide concentrations to less than 0.5 ppm in 1 h or less. These surfactants were quaternary amine salts with one long chain (C12-C18) organic group and three methyl groups. Experiments using 3 L batches of wastewater or an ion elutriation cell continuously fed with solution draining from an inactive heap leach operation confirmed the results from the screening tests.

This paper briefly describes the principal commercial and near-commercial deposits of gold-bearing gravel and the important placer-mining operations in Lemhi County, Idaho. It is on of a series on western mining districts being published by the Bureau of Mines. This paper is based on a field survey of the placer-mining districts of Lemhi County in the summer of 1938. Available information concerning gold-bearing gravels was obtained from prospectors and claim owners; operators supplied the data on mining operations. No attempt was made actually to test the gravels. The principal object of the examination was to indicate placer areas worthy of further investigation by prospective operators.

As part of the important program of promoting conservation and efficient utilization of petroleum, Bureau of Mines engineers are making studies of secondary oil-recovery projects throughout the United states and publishing reports setting forth the pertinent facts so that others may profit by the experience gained. This report presents the results of a study by engineers of the Bureau of Mines, stationed at Franklin, Pa., of secondary oil recovery in a part of the Cabin Creek field, Kanawha and Boone Counties, W. Va., where natural gas is injected into the reservoir to stimulate oil production. Most oil produced in the Appalachian region at present is obtained from stripper fields in which almost all natural energy has been dissipated. Secondary-recovery methods are used extensively in many oil-producing areas of New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, and Kentucky for recovering oil not produced by primary-production methods. The part of the Cabin Creek field reported in this study is shown in figure 1 and has been designated by the operator as project 4. In 1944 the developed area of the entire field was approximately 4,200 acres, and the area of project 4 was about 600 acres. In the developed area of the project the oil reservoir is in the Berea sandstone and occurs at 2,914 to 3,410 feet.

Umiat field contains the largest accumulation of oil discovered so far in Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 4 in Arctic Alaska. The Umiat anticline was tested with 11 wells; 6 produced oil in varying quantities. Behavior of the wells during testing was unpredictable. For example, one well was abandoned as a dry hole after all tests failed to recover any oil, yet an offset well, only 200 feet from the dry hole, produced 400 barrels of oil a day. The main oil reservoirs are less than 1,000 feet deep and are in the permanently frozen zone (permafrost). Reservoir pressures are low, and most primary production will be by expansion of gas-in-solution in the oil. Because of the unusual reservoir conditions and the difficulties encountered in drilling and completing the wells, the Department of the Navy asked the Federal Bureau of Mines to make laboratory studies of the reservoir sand to determine the cause of well plugging and to provide laboratory information, to be used as an aid in estimating oil recovery from frozen reservoir rocks under solution-gas expansion from low-saturation pressure conditions.

This paper presents one of a series of digests of foreign mining legisla- tion and court decisions that is being prepared in advance of a general report relative to the rights of American citizens to explore for minerals and to own and operate mines in various foreign countries. This interpretation of the laws of Switzerland has been prepared from the best information available in ashington, but is released subject to correction and amplification, if necessary, by the proper American diplomatic and consuler officers, to whom it is being referred through the courtesy of the Department of State. Sitzerland is a small country in which little mining is done, yet it has a voluminous body of mining legislation. There are two salt-mining districts in Switzerland; that at Bez, Canton of Vaud, belongs to the Canton but the deposit is worked by a private company; and those at Schweizerhalle, Rheinfelden and Ryburg are worked by a joint stock company formed by the Cantons interested. Iron ore is mined at Gonzen, Canton of St. Gallen, and large beds of gypsum are worked, mainly for domestic consumption. In general, however, although many kinds of minerals are said to have been found in Switzerland, mining operations are irreguler end relatively unimportant. Even during the world war only about 2,500 persons were employed in mining establishments and most of these were in under round stone quarries. On the other hand, the republic comprises 22 Cantons, of which 3 are divided, making 25 units, and in the absence of generel Federal legislation, each of these units virtually has its own distinct mining la Under these circumstances, it is obviously inadvisable to review the mining lars of Switzerland in the same detail as those of other countries which Lave been digested in this series. For the lars of individual Cantons, as well as for a more comprehensive summary of the Swiss legislation as a whole, the reader is referred to a recent German publication." Previous Work . The Bureau of Mines reported a survey of bond clays for graphite crucibles at the American Mining Congress which met at St. Louis in November , 1919 *** . The report contained information in regard to : (a) tests carried on to determine the effect of substituting Canadian and Alabama graphites for Ceylon graphite in varying proportions . The data indicated that Alabama graphite is superior to Canadian graphite and further , that Alabama can be substituted for Ceylon graphite to a large measure without lowering the quality of the ware . These tests were made on No. 70 size brass melting crucibles and were carried out under foundry practice . (b ) Tests were reported in which an attempt was made to modify the nature of Alabama graphite by heat treatment so as to resemble Ceylon graphite . Little advantage from the treatment was reported . With this general information as a basis , the experimental work proceeded along two lines : A study of bond clays for steel -melting crucibles and for brass -melting crucibles . Twenty- one sets of standard-size crucibles were made up of a body containing Ceylon graphite as standard , bonded with 21 bond clays . These tests were carried out under foundry practice as were the former tests . Three domestic clays proved to be superior to the standard Klingenberg clay formerly used in brass -melting practice while in the steel - melting industry , 13 domestic clays gave service superior to Klingenberg clay .

On November 20, 1968, a massive explosion rocked the underground workings of Mountaineer Coal Co.?s Farmington No. 9 Mine in West Virginia. Of the 99 miners who were working in the mine at the time of the explosion, only 21 survived and escaped the mine. This group included eight who were rescued from the Mahan?s Run air shaft. Nearly 40 years after the event, researchers from the NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Laboratory conducted oral history interviews with two of the eight survivors rescued from the shaft. The Farmington No. 9 Mine disaster ultimately led to passage of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 (amended in 1977).

In the summer of 1950, Bureau of Mines engineers visited a number of coal-preparation plants in western Europe and Great Britain to obtain information on European and British coal-cleaning and froth-flotation practices. In view of the growing importance of froth flotation as a process for cleaning fine sizes of coal, it was felt that such data and information would be of value in this country, for, although froth flotation has been adopted for use in a few of our plants, it has not as yet been employed as extensively as in British and European preparation plants. Many of the important coal beds in western Europe, especially in the Ruhr Valley of Germany and in the Dutch coal-mining region of Limburg, Netherlands, are very friable, with the result that the run-of-mine product contains a large proportion of the sizes too fine to be treated successfully by any other method than froth flotation. Furthermore, the relatively high cost of producing coal from these beds has for many years made it economically feasible and desirable to treat the fines by froth flotation, especially in the coking-coal fields.

The physical properties and specific gravity ranges of various liquids and salt solutions used for laboratory sink-float separations of rocks or minerals are presented. The test equipment and techniques employed by the Bureau of Mines in making sink-and-float separations of particles as coarse as 3 inches to as fine as 400 mesh are described. Also discussed are methods of recovering and reclaiming the liquids or salts from the minerals and wash solutions, as well as the hazards encountered and precautions to be followed while working with the materials. The laboratory use of various liquids for separating minerals of different specific gravities has been recognized for many years. During this time, laboratory sink-float procedures have proven their utility as a rapid and moderately accurate means for determining the mineral content of ores, test products, and plant products in certain nonmetallic concentrating operations, such as those producing mica, spodumene, kyanite, and so forth. These procedures also have been used as analytical tools for determining the mineral content and associations of other metallic and nonmetallic ores.

The Bureau of Mines developed a flue gas desulfurization process as part of its goal of minimizing the undesirable environmental impacts associated with energy and mineral-processing plants. The modified citrate process involves absorption of sulfur dioxide (S02) in a buffered citric acid solution. The S02-loaded solution is regenerated by countercurrent contact with steam in a packed tower. The wet S02 product is then dried and can be liquefied or further processed to make sulfuric acid. Test data from process investigation unit studies are presented. Material balances, flowsheets, and cost estimates are given for recovering S02 from copper smelter reverberatory gas, lead smelter sintering machine tail gas, and power-plant stack gas. Operating cost estimates show the process will add $0.04 per pound of copper, $0.01 per pound of lead, and $0.015 per kwhr to the cost of the respective operations. These costs could be substantially reduced if a source of waste heat was avail-able to provide the process steam requirements.

The Bureau of Mines is studying possible modifications in conventional ore-processing methods that will confine and permit controlled disposal of radioactive liquid wastes. Stream and ground water pollution from radio-active nuclides, principally radium 226 and thorium 230, in liquid wastes from uranium mills can be minimized by reusing the waste solution within the mill. Such reuse of waste solution in an acid leach-resin-in-pulp flowsheet was investigated in the laboratory. The process consists of acid leaching for dissolution of the uranium, sand-slime separation and countercurrent decantation washing for recovery of a pregnant slime slurry, and the use of ion-exchange resin for recovery of uranium from the slurry. Reuse of clarified barren effluent for washing in the simulated mill circuit was carried through 55 cycles. Dissolution of uranium from the ore averaged 97.5 percent. Washing efficiency of 99.9 percent was attained when using 4.35 volume tons4 of combined barren effluent and makeup water per ton of ore. Absorption of uranium from the pregnant slime slurry by an ion-exchange resin averaged over 99.9 percent.
