This investigation was undertaken to contribute to the understanding of underground pull tests by conducting laboratory tests under closely controlled conditions. Steel bolts, instrumented with electrical resistance strain gages, were anchored in an aluminum block, a granite block, and a steel sleeve, and were subjected to pull tests. The bearing plates used were either flat7 dished, or embossed. In pull testing a bolt that is prestressed, there is a range of loading during which bolt load is greater than the jack-applied load, This study showed that preload, the size, shape, and type of bearing plate; and the geometry of the system determine the point at which bolt load and applied load become equal. The effects on bolt load of both a theoretical solution and actual pull tests were analogous and led to similar results.

This report summarizes the results of a hydrologic research study conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) in cooperation with Energy West Mining Co. at the Deer Creek and Cottonwood Mines, near Orangeville, UT. The USBM evaluated hydrologic and overburden failure data to assess the response of local ground water to underground coal mining in single-and multiple-seam conditions. Fourteen springs located over the two mines were investigated in the study along with overburden failure response caused by longwall panel extraction. Spring discharge was compared to climatic variation and time of undermining to quantify response to undermining. Spring discharge had been reduced owing to below-normal precipitation during the period evaluated. The response of springs to mining in the vicinity was influenced in part by the thick overburden present at the study site the presence of hydrophilic clays and mudstones in the overburden stratigraphy, and elevation of the springs above mine level, which buffered the effects of undermining.

This paper describes mining and milling practices at the San Xavier mine of the Eagle- Picher Mining & Smelting Co. in Pima County , Ariz . It is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods in various mining districts of the United States . The mine and the mine surface buildings are situated in sec . 11 , T. 17 S. , R. 12 E. , in the Sierrita Mountains in Pima County , 20 miles south by southwest from Tucson via the San Xavier Mission and Twin Buttes road ( fig . 1). A well-maintained dirt road continues southward toward Twin Buttes for 4 miles and then branches off northeasterly for 5-1/2 miles to Sahuarita , where the concentrator of the Eagle - Picher Mining & Smelting Co. is situated on the west slope of the Santa Cruz River Valley . Tho mill is connected by a railroad branch to the main line of the Southorn Pacific Railroad between Tucson and Nogales . It is generally assumed that the San Xavier silver - lead deposits became known to the Jesuits and Spaniards in the early part of the eighteenth century . However , no extensive mining operations were conducted by the Jesuits in what is now Arizona before the middle of the eighteenth century . The completion of the Southern Pacific Railroad from Los Angeles to El Paso in 1881 marked the beginning of intense activity in mining throughout the southern part of the State . The San Xavier mine produced 6,000,000 pounds of lead , considerable zinc ( exact figures not available ) and $200,000 in silver from 1897 to 1918 . The Eagle- Picher Mining & Smolting Co. re- opened the San Xavier mine in 1943 and built a 175-ton concentrator at Sahuarita . The capacity of the plant was increased in 1944 to 500 tons in order to take in custom ore . The surface rocks at the San Xavier mine are , in great part , of sedimentary origin . Limestones of various ages comprise most of the exposed sedimentaries , some quartzites and shales also being present . The sedimentaries rest upon coarse - textured , intrusive , igneous rocks comprised mainly of granite and granodiorite . The San Xavier deposit is composed of galena , sphalerite , chalcopyrite , and pyrite . Generally the individual ore bodies are small , discontinuous , and occur as irregularly spaced shoots or lenses . The present mine workings extend horizontally a distance of 2,700 feet and vertically 900 feet . Owing to ground weight, all mine openings are timbered on the levels and all stopes are square- setted and waste -filled .

In the production of oil end gas, engineering methods have been applied less than in any other branch of the oil industry. While refineries, gasoline plants, pipe-line and other transportation systems, and even drilling wells to a great extent, take advantage of engineering skill, the tendency has been to assume that the handling of producing wells is merely a mechanical and routine matter. At present few companies employ engineers to study oil and gas production methods with a view of increasing the general efficiency of recovery, but in vie, of the advancement in other lines of the petroleum industry by the application of engineering principles, does it not seem likely that the production branch may benefit also by engineering studies? Engineering applied to the handling of producing wells falls under two general headings, - first, the efficient handling of wells from the time of their inception in order to obtain the greatest possible ultimate production, and, second, the rehabilitation of old properties that have been handled carelessly in their early lives. To date, the engineering work that has been done on oil production problems falls mostly in the second class. For example, the use of vacuum and the application of compressed air have proved successful in some instances in stimulating wells of low gas pressure. These methods are costly to apply and are adapted to small wells in which the gas is almost exhausted, or in which the original gas pressure is negligible. The experiments described in this paper fall under the first heading, as they were made with an idea of learning toe probable extent to which the gas production of an oil well can be curtailed while gas in the sand is still plentiful, and thus saved for doing work during the later period of a well's life. Because of the scope of the experiments, this paper does not include a discussion of back pressure on flowing wells or for purposes other than cutting down the gas produced with each barrel of oil.

An oil-field drilling campaign is used in this paper to signify the spacing of the wells to be drilled as well as the drilling program, which is interpreted as the number of wells drilled in a unit of time, This has an important bearing upon the time of receiving income, as well as upon the amount of revenue obtained In periods of low prices for oil, such as the present, the margin of profit is at the best very small, and the correct determination of the drilling campaign may be the deciding factor between incurring financial loss or gain during the depressed period. General policy of the operator. Drilling should be planned by the field engineer to conform with the general policy of the operator. This policy may be one of conservation daring the early life of the property, but as mentioned later, this may result in a smaller ultimate recovery it often occurs that the market price of oil does not warrant rapid development, or it may be desirable to hold in reserve a supply of oil for a refinery. The policy may be to recover all of the oil as quickly as possible, or it may be to maintain a constant and sustained production. In any case, the operator should, outline as far as possible a definite policy, and should understand the principles underlying the recovery of oil, the influence of rapidity of drilling and effects of spacing, in order that he may obtain the oil as required with the least expenditure.

"Eicosanoids and cytokines produced by alveolar macrophages (AM) are key mediators of pulmonary inflammation and fibrosis. In order to determine if eicosanoid production and cytokine production are altered in AM obtained from coal miners, we compared production of prostaglandin E2 (PCE2), thromboxane A2 (TXA2), leukotriene B4 (LTB4), interleukin-1 beta (IL-1B ), and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNfa.) by cultured AM from normal human subjects and coal miners. The recovery of AM from miners' lungs by bronchoalveolar lavage was significantly greater than that from control subjects. Mean eicosanoid and cytokine production by AM from active miners was also increased compared to AM from control subjects, but this increase was not statistically significant. AM from control subjects produced significantly more TXA2 and TNFa. when exposed to lipopolysaccharide than did AM from miners. The cyclooxygenase inhibitor suprofen reduced PGE1 and TXA1 production and TNF0t. release but had no effect on LTB4 production or IL-1B release by miners' AM. The lipoxygenase inhibitor nordihydroguaiaretic acid attenuated TNFa release, as well as that of LTB4, but had no effect on IL-1B release. Inhibition of thromboxane synthase by UK 38,485 also reduced TNFa release by active miners ' AM but had no effect on PGE1, LTB, production, or IL-1 f3 release. The results of these studies suggest that occupational inhalation of coal dust may increase total lung eicosanoid and cytokine levels and reduce the reactivity of AM to bacterial endotoxin. Furthermore, coal dust-induced changes in both eicosanoid and cytokine release may be subject to pharmacological modulation.The alveolar macrophage (AM) is a primary defensive cell in the lung and is one of the first cell types to encounter inhaled mineral dust. The response of the AM to invading foreign material is designed to enhance the defensive capacity of the lung. However, in the case of occupational inhalation of mineral dust particles, this response may be inappropriate, resulting not in the defense of the lung but in chronic inflammation and fibrosis (Rom et al., 1987; Takemura et al., 1989). The reaction of the AM to chronic mineral dust exposure may involve the exaggerated release of paracrine mediators of lung function, including eicosanoids (oxygenated derivatives of arachidonic acid) and peptides, including cytokines and growth factors (Sibille & Reynolds, 1990). Eicosanoids are involved in bronchial and vascular smooth muscle reactivity, vascular permeability, fibroblast growth, and the recruitment of additional immune cells to the alveolar space (Barnard et al., 1992; Elias et al., 1985; Scott et al., 1982). AM-derived cytokines such as interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 B) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TN Fa) have a variety of biological activities including the regulation of fibroblast growth and proliferation (Becker et al., 1989; Libby et al., 1989; Schmidt et al., 1984). Interestingly, in vitro studies with macrophages suggest that the production of cytokines may be linked to eicosanoid production, in particular that prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) may down-regulate IL-1 f3 and TN Foe production by the AM (Bonta et al., 1989; Kunkel et al., 1986; Monick et al., 1987)."

The consumption of gasoline in the United States varies materially with the seasons; during some of the summer months it exceeds the rate of production and in the other seasons the production of gasoline exceeds the consumption, The usual practice of the larger refiners is to store surplus stocks during the winter season in order to meet the heavy demands during the summer months. In 1985, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U. S. Bureau of Mines studied part of the 56,623-acre South McCullough Mountains Wilderness Study Area (NV-050-435) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The area studied is located in Clark County, NV, about 30 miles southwest of Boulder City. No mineral resources were identified. The study area contains the eastern part of the unorganized McCullough Mountain (McClanahan) mining district which has had no recorded production. Between 1911 and 1982, 23 lode claims were located in the part of the mining district that is in the study area; four of these claims are currently held by assessment (1986). A total of 11 mineral sites were found and examined during the U.S. Bureau of Mines investigations; 26 mine workings were examined. Of the 11 sites, four are within the study area, and seven are nearby. Of the seven nearby sites, six are adjacent to the west boundary and consist of precious-and base-metals bearing vein occurrences in metamorphic rocks. The seventh site is near the east study area boundary, and consists of a tungsten-bearing vein occurrence that is also in metamorphic rocks. The four sites within the study area consist of vein occurrences in metamorphic rocks that contain silver, gold, arsenic, lead, zinc, and copper. The veins at these four sites are too small and low grade to be classified resources; however, there are indications that three of the sites may have silver and gold resources at depth. Detailed delineation of the veins, and determinations of tonnages and grades are needed. This would entail additional mapping and sampling, trenching and drilling, and opening inaccessible workings.

Several promising systems for selectively oxidizing the iron in an iron-tin alloy commonly called "hardhead" were investigated in a research project conducted to devise a method for recovering tin from this troublesome alloy. A satisfactory oxidation method was developed and tested successfully on melts of 2,000 grams. Molten hardhead (near 1,080° C.) was blown with air to oxidize iron and leave tin in the reduced state. Recovery of available tin was 96 to 98 percent. Tin products contained 2 to 0.1 percent iron which was reduced to 0.06 percent by filtration at 250° C. Iron oxide formed during oxidation was absorbed by a fluid flux cover composed of 43 percent silica, 17 percent burned limestone, and 40 percent fused borax. Less successful but nevertheless promising results were obtained with mixtures of steam and hydrogen which were sufficiently selective at temperatures between 600° and 950° C. but did not result in complete oxidation of iron. Carbon dioxide-carbon monoxide mixtures also oxidized iron selectively but incompletely. Both stern and carbon dioxide systems produced sufficiently encouraging results to additional research on these systems.

This paper, which describes the mining methods and practices at the Jarbidge mines of the Elkoro Mines Co., is one of a series of papers being issued by the United States Bureau of Mines on mining methods and costs in various districts throughout the United States. LOCATION AND HISTORY The Elkoro Mines Co.'s property is located at Jarbidge in the northeast corner of the State of Nevada (fig. 1). The camp is 9 miles south of the Idaho line; the nearest railroad point is 70 miles to the northeast at Rogerson, Idaho. A road leading to the south and connecting with Deeth, Nev., is passable during the summer months; the heavy snowfall which generally takes place early in the winter usually closes the road until the first of July.

[Inquiries are frequently received by the Bureau of Minas relative to occurrence, mining, treatment and utilization of the natural hydrocarbons' such as gilsonite, elaterate, wurtzilite, grahamite, and ozokerite although have been known and used for many years, they are not yet well understood and the amount of recent literature dealing with them as comparatively small. This paper is intended merely to summarize the present knowledge The natural hydrocarbons included in this series are gilsonite, elaterite, wurtzilite, glance pitch, manjak, grahamite, albertite, arid ozokerite and many other minor varieties. With the exception of ozokerite and the other mineral waxes, then all more or less resemble asphalt in that they are dark brown or black bituminous substances of organic origin, generally with a resinous luster. Ozokerite usually light an color with a waxey luster, is closely allied to the others of the series, but is usually considered separately, Unfortunately authorities differ as to nomenclature so that determinations of physical and chemical properties from different sources may riot be readily compared. Abraham Herbert, Asphalts and Allied Substances, 1918, 606 pp. has made one of the most detailed studies of these subjects in recent years, and his classification is used in the main. Illumination plays a critical role in an underground miner?s safety because miners depend most heavily on visual cues to recognize hazards. Mobile mining machinery, located in the miner?s peripheral field-of-view (±10° to about ±60° off-axis), may pose potential pinning and striking hazards. The main objective of this research was to determine if there were peripheral visual performance improvements for the detection of moving objects when using cool-white light-emitting diode (LED) cap lamps as compared to incandescent (INC) light bulbs commonly used in miner cap lamps. The cap lamp variable of interest is the spectral power distribution (SPD); the illuminances were normalized by a diffusion filter. The second objective was to determine if age is a factor for peripheral visual performance. This is important because the workforce is aging ? the average miner age is about 43 years old. Thirty subjects participated in the study; ten subjects each in the age groups of younger (18 to 25 years), middle (40 to 50 years), and older (50+ years). Visual performance was quantified by the subjects? speed and accuracy of response to detect the rotation of high-contrast (white) circular targets located 3.83 meters (m) away at -20°, 40°, and 50° off-axis. The speed of detection and the number of missed target rotations (accuracy) were measured. The prototype LED cap lamp results were best with a 11% to 15% improvement compared to the INC and LED cap lamps respectively. Age does appear to be a significant factor. For the middle and older age groups?, target movement detection time increased 75% and 60% and the number of missed targets increased 500% and 450% respectively in comparison to the youngest age group. The results also suggest that target location is a significant factor. The subjects? target movement detection time for the 40° and 50° target movements increased 16% and 69% respectively as compared to the -20° target.

A primary, function of the Bureau of Mines is to encourage elimination of waste and the most profitable use of mineral raw materials. In line with this objective the Bureau has frequently stressed the importance of waste utilization at stone quarries. From time to tine studies both technical and economic in character have been made of problems pertaining to the most efficient use of natural, stone, particularly that which may be classed as a by-product of the higher grades of dimension stone. Every quarry producing ornamental or building stone yields large quantities of material that for one reason or another is unsuited for high-grade products, even though a great deal of work has been expended upon it more or less unavoidably. It is obviously good judgment to sell this odd-sized or off-grade stone at whatever price can be obtained rather than to spend more money to place it on the waste dump. In many cases, however, a really profitable side line has been developed.

"Exposure to respirable contaminants in mine atmospheres has long posed a serious hazard to miners. The control of these hazards, some of which can have sudden and catastrophic effects and some others, slow and long enduring consequences, has been a major concern for labor, management and government alike. This concern has manifested itself in four primary mechanisms of control -- (1) regulatory control through minimum standard setting by the passage of mine health and safety laws, (2) engineering control through design and operation of 'mines according to the best recommended practices, (3) medical control through periodic physical examinations, wearing personal protection devices, etc., and (4) legal and social control through workmen's compensation laws for occupation related health deterioration:-The respirable contaminants in mine atmo¬spheres are toxic and explosive gases, toxic and explosive dusts, diesel exhaust particu¬lates, radon progeny, etc. Perhaps the most important of all these and the most widely occurring in mine atmospheres is respirable dust, an inevitable product of fragmentation, a unit operation fundamental to all mining operations. In fact; the-most serious health hazard for workers in the mining and minerals processing industries is still the exposure to respirable dust, and solutions to the problem of respirable dust disease remain to be found.The 1969 Coal Mine Health and Safety Act and its provisions for the respirable dust standards in underground coal mines are briefly reviewed. An overview of the research accomplishments in meeting the standards is presented. The current state of knowledge on the effectiveness of the standards and the new and emerging problems are discussed. A brief summary of the research programs of the Generic Technology Center on Respirable Dust is presented.In general, underground mines are becoming increasingly safe. In view of the developments and recent interest in recovering heavy oil , this report was prepared to present general information on more than 2,000 heavy oil reservoirs in more than 1,500 fields in 26 states . Information given on each heavy - oil deposit includes the following items : Field and formation , location , average or range of depth , average API gravity of oil , average thickness of formation , areal extent of field , total productive wells drilled in field , discovery date of field , field status in 1963 , cumulative production to Jan. 1 , 1964 , and all known types of secondary - recovery operations initiated ( active and terminated ) in the reservoirs . The geographical location of heavy oil accumulations in the United States is shown by a map , and a brief discussion of 14 different areas is given in the text . As of Jan. 1 , 1964 , 75 percent of the heavy oil reservoirs in the United States had produced more than 10 billion barrels of oil and are estimated to contain over 90 billion barrels of oil in place . It is also estimated that if the deposits which have had little or no production history , such as the one in Missouri , were included , the total remaining heavy oil in place would be in excess of 150 billion barrels . To find economical ways of recovering this vast reserve of heavy oil , industry is developing technology in several types of thermal - recovery methods . Some of the general considerations and more suitable limitations in selecting a prospect to study for thermal - recovery techniques are : Lithology , depth , viscosity of reservoir fluids , gravity of oil , reservoir thickness , oil in place , and permeability and porosity .

This paper is one of a series being published by the Bureau of Mines on milling methods and costs. It describes briefly the procedure followed in concentrating hübnerite or? at the Ima tungsten mine, Lemhi County, Idaho. In October 1911 the Ima mill was utilizing combined gravity-concentration, flotation, and magnetic-separation units for the recovery of a tungsten concentrate and a pyritic silver concentrate approximately 120 tons of ore averaging 0.5 percent W03 is treated daily. The concentrates produced average 66 to 67 percent WO3.

Procedures in which manganese compounds are reduced and the metal is volatilized and selectively condensed, a hitherto neglected area, were investigated. More than 95 percent of the manganese was recovered from high-melting-point ores whether vacuum volatilization or atmospheric pressure volatilization was used, but neither process is economically attractive under present price-cost conditions.
