"The regrettable death of James S. Cunningham, Foreman Miner, attached to Bureau of Mines Rescue Car No. 2, while wearing a half-hour type oxygen breathing apparatus in a gasoline storage tank at Trinidad, Colorado, raised the question as to the possibility of gasoline vapors permeating the rubberized fabric of the breathing bags of such apparatus.It is known that most gases and especially certain organic vapors permeate rubber, by solution or a similar process. The rubber becomes saturated with the gas and if a concentration of gas is maintained on one side of the rubber sheet it slowly gives off gas from the other side. It of course takes some time for the gas to diffuse through the rubber and the length of time before it reaches the other side is proportional to the thickness of the rubber. The amount of gas that passes through per unit of area in unit time increases with the concentration of gas and also varies with the structure and composition of the rubber.It has been suggested that the gasoline vapor could not have penetrated into the interior of an oxygen breathing bag because the pressure is greater on the inside, but this is not true as the process of permeation by solution in the rub¬ber is affected only by the difference in the partial pressures of gasoline vapor on the inside and outside of the bag. The positive oxygen pressure on the inside can only prevent the entrance of gasoline vapor through measurable holes, and has no effect on permeation by diffusion through the rubber.A sample of gasoline was obtained from the tank in which Cunningham met his death. Examination by Dr. E. W. Dean of the Petroleum Division of the Bureau of Mines gave the following results.This shows the gasoline to be heavy and typical of the gasolines sold throughout Colorado for motor fuel A. Salvus half hour oxygen apparatus was arranged with the breathing bag only in a gas tight box in which the space was kept saturated with the vapor of this gasoline. The main part of the apparatus was outside the box. Oxygen from the apparatus was breathed by a man in the usual manner. Gas samples were taken from the box at intervals to determine the concentration of gasoline vapor, also samples of the oxygen breathed were taken from a side tube in the mouthpiece. The room temperature was 75°F. The concentration of gasoline vapor in the box at the beginning of the test was 4.3%. The man breathing from the apparatus thought he detected gasoline in his oxygen in two minutes after starting the test. Analysis of the inspired oxygen at this time showed 0.03% gasoline vapor. The same man remained on the apparatus for 18 1/2 minutes without suffering any ill effects. His place vas then taken by another man who wore the apparatus until the oxygen was exhausted without noticing more than a trace of gasoline at any time. At the end of the test the inspired oxygen contained 0.07% gasoline vapor. The total time of test was 38 minutes."

"INTRODOCTIONIn an earlier communication 1 from our laboratory it was reported that mechanical crushing of coal and quartz under normal air atmosphere generates of free radicals on the particle surfaces, and that these radicals decay with time, hence pointing to a higher toxicity of fresh dusts in relationship to pneumoconiosis and silicosis. More recently Fubini et al.2 have also reported the detection by electron spin resonance (ESR) of the formation of SiO. and Si-type of radicals from quartz particles crushed under atmospheric conditions. In agreement with earlier ESR studies on single crystals of quartz crushed under high vacuum ( -10-10 torr>3 and subsequent exposure to air,3 and to other gases,4 these radicals were identified2 as being formed by the homolytic cleavage of the Si-0-Si bonds and the reactions of the Si• and SiO- radical with atmosphere. Fubini et al.2 also suggested that these radicals might be involved in the mechanism of the fibrotic action by silica, either by transforming the particle surface into a selective oxidating agent or as an initiator of a sequence of reactions leading to fibrosis. Earlier Gabor and Anca5 bad reported that lipid ·peroxidation caused by free radicals on the silica surface might be involved in the red blood cell membrane damage. Thus far, however, no parallel cytotoxicity, fibrogenicity, and free radica1 studies on a given quartz dust sample have been reported, except for some earlier work from our laboratory.1·6·7 We now present more recent results obtained from parallel cytotoxicity, fibrogenicity, and free radica1 measurements on a freshly made quartz dust. The dust's free radica1 content was measured using ESR spectroscopy while its cytotoxicity potential was estimated via hemolysis. Hemolysis was employed as the toxicity test because it is a widely used method for estimating the potential of a dust for disrupting the cell membrane. 8 The fibrotic potential was followed by measuring the dust-induced lipid peroxidation, using linoleic acid as a model lipid. As discussed below, the results obtained suggest new clues to the mechanism of the quartzrelated cytotoxicity and fibrogenicity. MATERIALS AND METHODSReagentsCrystalline quartz particles with a size range of 0.2-2.5 mm were obtained from the Generic Respirable Dust Technology Center, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pennsylvania. These particles were crushed in air to obtain quartz dust samples with particle sizes smaller than 20 microns. We chose to work with a dust with mixed particle sizes, rather than a specific range, as an effort to simulate the mining atmosphere. An agate mortar-pestle arrangement was used for the crushing and grinding because of the close similarity of the structure of agate to that of quartz. Diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DETAPAC) were purchased from Sigma. All other chemica1s were purchased from Fisher or Aldrich.Hemolysls ExperimentsHemolytic activity of silica was measured, following an established procedure,9 as the amount of hemoglobin released from a 2 % suspension of sheep erythrocytes after incubation with 10 mg of silica dust for one hour at 37 °C. The hemoglobin release was estimated via the absorbance at 540 nm using a Gioford spectrophotometer. The procedure was calibrated by substituting the silica dust by a phosphate buffer solution as a negative control (background) and O.S % Triton-X-100 as a positive control (100% hemolysis). The Bureau of Mines is using model ducts lined with coal to study the nature of coal mine fires, their rate of propagation, their influence on ventilation airflows, and their response to sealing and other fire suppression measures. For scale-modeling purposes these studies are being carried out in various size ducts; eventually they will include a full-size mine entry in the Bruceton multiple-entry Experimental Mine. To date, work has been carried out in an insulated 9.l-m-long duct with a 5-cm thickness of coal leaving a 23-by 23-cm square opening for air ventilation. Fire propagation processes in this duct were mainly transient in nature owing to the relatively small length-to-diameter ratio. This report describes the experimental equipment employed and the results obtained to date.

Molybdenum alloys with good strength properties at elevated temperatures were produced by the powder metallurgical internal oxidation method previously applied to tungsten and known as oxyreaction strengthening. Commercial molybdenum powders were blended with 0 to 10 pet of a reactive powder, ZrMo2. The effects of composition, blending procedure, and sintering conditions on strength properties at elevated temperatures were studied. Strengthening was attributed to zirconium in solid solution with molybdenum and to the presence of submicrometer particles of Zr02. Several alloys had tensile strength and stress-rupture properties com-parable with those of the best commercial alloys. The maximum tensile strengths obtained were 92 kpsi at 1,200° C and 53 kpsi at 1,316° C. The maximum stress-rupture life at 30 kpsi and 1,200° C was 145 hours.

Everyone knows that mining is a noisy job, but did you know that you are nine times more likely to lose your hearing than someone who works in a quieter job? If unprotected from noise on the job, by age 50, you will probably need hearing aids. Obviously, the best solution is to engineer out the noise, but that isn?t always im­mediately possible. Until mines are quieter, one way you can help save your vital sense of hearing is to use hearing protectors whenever the noise around you is hazardous. Even if you already have some hearing loss, you can use hearing protectors to prevent your hearing from getting worse. When loud noise is present, proper use of hearing protectors will help miners pre-vent most or all noise-induced hearing loss.

Domestic cobalt resources are relatively large, but low grade. The full potential for cobalt production from domestic sources is at least 19.4 million lb of cobalt per year exclusive of offshore resources. A summary of the cobalt processing technologies for the major domestic resources is presented in this Bureau of Mines report. The processing technologies for the Blackbird, Madison Nine, Duluth Gabbro, iron ore pyrite, laterites, and manganese sea nodules are nearly complete, but the economics are not favorable. Research on these resources should be limited to approaches that promise to cut the total processing costs by at least 50 pct. The most promising sources of cobalt are the spent copper leach solutions and siegenite from the Missouri lead ores. Research on cobalt processing from these two sources needs to be completed.

Construction workers may be exposed to hazardous dust containing silica when working in enclosed cabs during construction activities. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) found that equipment operator exposure could be reduced by retrofitting air pressurization and filtration systems on existing cabs, using sweeping compounds on soiled floors, and implementing a dust control program.

"This paper is based on the results of work conducted of the bureau's experiment station at Berkeley, Calif., in connection with the investigation of properties and methods of utilizing Western magnesite. The experiments described herein were made under the supervision of the writer, by W. C. Riddell and E. H. Delius, of the station's staff.In calcining magnesite for the production of magnesium oxide to be used in the preparation of oxychloride cement, the calcium carbonate present in the original rock may remain unchanged or appear in the finished product, either as CaO, or in combination with SiO2, A12O3, etc. As there is reason to believe that free CaO may have an effect on the behavior of caustic magnesia in the cement reaction, it is desirable to have a method for the determination of the relatively small amounts of free CO in the presence of a large quantity of MgO.The extraction of the free CaO with water free from CO2 at once suggests itself as a possible method. The solubilities of Ca(OH2)2 and Mg(OH)2. are given by Seidell in his book an ""Solubility of Inorganic and Organic Compounds."" (2nd Edition, 1919) as follows:"

A preliminary survey of coke and steel plants conducted by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Office of Solid Fuels Coordinator and under the auspices of the Coke Production Committee indicated that a very appreciable increase in pig-iron production would be obtained if pres- ent blast furnaces were supplied with a more uniform coke. Control of the sulfur and ash content of coal used for making coke is an important factor in producing uniform coke and thus increasing blast- furnace efficiency. In some mines producing metallurgical coal, the analysis of the coal bed shows a wide range of sulfur and ash content. To obtain production of coal with minimum deviation in sulfur content sampling, grading, selective mining, blending, and surface preparation are practiced at some mines with satisfactory results. The mines selected for this study have developed these methods and are successfully producing coal of uniform sulfur and ash content. The systems employed at different mines vary according to the physical character- istics of the coal bed, the manner of occurrence of impuritites in the coal, the development plan and mining system, surface preparation and the acceptable impurity content of the prepared coal. The ash content of the coal can be controlled by face preparation and in the cleaning plant. The introduction of some method or practice at other mines might make possible the use of coal for inetallurgical purposes that otherwise could not be used for making coke because of the wide variation of sulfur and ash content.

This report describes the preparation characteristics of the more significant coalbeds in Monongalia County, W. Va. It is one of a Bureau of Mines series planned to determine coals suitable for producing metallurgical coke, either as mined or after beneficiation. Over 9.5 million tons of coal was produced in Monongalia County in 1957, of which more than 7 million tons was cleaned mechanically in 8 cleaning plants. On January I, 1954 the Bureau of Mines estimated that 1,576 million tons of recoverable coal remained in the county in beds 28 inches or more thick.

"INTRODUCTION The metallurgical research program of the Bureau of Mines has been somewhat disorganized, but generally advanced by the increased activities of the war period. The present report is for the purpose of summarizing the work of the Bureau in this field for the past 15 years and indicating its future plan.Fifteen years ago the Bureau turned from its pioneer work on the physical chemistry of steelmaking to an emphasis on raking a pure steel synthetically, rather than by refining, that is, :producing each of the steel 'constituents in the pure state and combining them by simple melting. Such a procedure permits the use of less high-grade ores, not only of iron, but of the ferroalloy metals, such as manganese and chromium,This program has led to extensive work on iron-ore concentration, agglomeration, reducibility of ores and agglomerates, direct reduction of iron ores and concentrates by a wide variety of processes; special refining processes for iron, the production of pure mangenese, chromium, and cobalt from low-grade ores by electrolytic processes, the production of ferrochromium, ferronickel, and ferronickel-cobalt from low-grade domestic ores, and the development of many special alloys to effectively use the new products.The status of the work in each of these fields and the future program of work, together with a bibliography of papers and patents by the Bureau staff on each of these subjects, are given."

In this Bureau of Mines study, two fluidized-bed reactors were designed, built, and operated, one as a sorber for S02 and the other as a contactor for the regeneration of the sulfur-laden alkalized alumina. The target of 90 percent removal of S02 from a flue gas stream containing 0.3 percent S02 was attained by using a sorbent feed of 10-15 grams per minute into a 5-inch bed depth of alkalized alumina. The sorption unit was operated at about 330° C. Complete regeneration of the laden alkalized alumina containing 5 to 10 percent sulfur was accomplished in approximately 1/2 hour. An excess of reformed propane at about 730° C was the regenerating gas. Attrition losses, a major problem with this sorbent, ranged from 0.9 to 7.9 percent of the inventory. Data from these tests demonstrate, within experimental error, the validity of equations developed from short-term, thin-bed tests related to sorption and regeneration rates.

The 31,880-acre Battle Creek Wilderness Study Area (WSA) was evaluated for mineral resources by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1984. No mining district is in the area, nor were any mines or claims recorded or found. Oil and gas leases, or lease applications, covered about half the area in early 1984. No known exploration has occurred. The entire WSA is covered with thick volcanic flows. Faults in these volcanic rocks may have provided conduits for mineralizing solutions emanating from the basement rocks; however, no evidence of mineral deposits was detected from rock samples collected along the faults. Reconnaissance samples from sand and gravel deposits yielded gold at less than $0.02/yd3. The source of the gold is assumed to be intrusive rocks or the Challis Volcanics about 20 miles north of the study area near the headwaters of Battle Creek. No economic concentrations of minerals were found in the WSA. INTRODUCTION Mineral surveys of designated wilderness study areas (WSAs) 1/ are conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The USBM researches the mining and mineral exploration history and evaluates mines, prospects, and mineralized areas within or adjacent to WSAs. The USGS studies WSAs by regional geochemical and geophysical surveys and geological mapping. The USBM and the USGS investigations are summarized in a joint report used to help determine the suitability of WSAs for inclusion into the National Wilderness Preservation System. Although the immediate goal of this USBM study is to provide data for the President, Congress, BLM, and the general public for land-use decisions, the long-term objective is to help insure that the Nation has an adequate and dependable supply of minerals at reasonable cost.

One of the lithium minerals most widespread in the earth's surface is spodumene (Li2O-A1203-4Si02) a lithium aluminium silicate. For some time, deposits of this mineral were known to exist in the Black Rills of South Dakota, but it was only quite recently that Hess4/ pointed out the great magnitude of the low-grade e deposits it s in North Carolina. The theoretical lithia (Li20) content of spodumene is 8.04 percent. The only other minerals with such high lithia content are the phosphates, but these occur only in pockets and are not in extensive deposits5/. Actually, however, the lithia content in spodumene is never found to be this high, being nearly always below 7 percent for the pure mineral, and part of the lithia is apparently replaced by other alkalies.

A model for the leaching of oxide ores is developed and II correlated with laboratory tests for percolation leaching of copper oxide are. Using the model, recovery of metal values and lixiviant concentration of the effluent solution at any time may be evaluated. For the copper oxide ore a simplified version of the model is examined for the leaching mechanism consisting of: 1) a surface flush reaction with the highest rate of lixiviant consumption; 2) penetration of lixiviant to react with copper minerals and gangue constituents; and, 3) slow lixiviant consumption, mostly by residual gangue materials. The simplified model is able to explain reasonably the leaching behavior of copper oxide ore by introducing a concept of effective initial size to correct for packing in a bed of fine particles.

The gold that is not recovered by a particular process is refractory to that process. A study to determine how the refractory gold is associated in the ore constituents usually indicates the needed improvement in the process or additional methods for bettering recovery. In preliminary work, segregation of the various minerals, gangue or impurities, and data showing the reactions of each in the recovery method readily confines the refractory gold to a certain part on which extensive research can be directed. In this dissecting plan, the microscope is an important aid in locating the refractory gold but should be supplemented by chemical tests.

This paper is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and cuts in the various reining districts of the United States. The mining methods described are those used in the mines of the Cananea Consolidated Copper Co., a Mexico corporation whose holding company in the United States is the Greene Cananea Copper Co. The mines are at Cananea, Sonora, Mexico, 25 miles directly south of the international boundary, approximately in 31° nor to latitude and 110 to 130° west longitude. Cananea is connected with the boundary towns of Naco and Nogales, Ariz., by a standard-gage railroad.

A method was investigated for detecting and counting filamentous iron bacteria in open recirculating cooling systems. It is simple and fast and does not require trained microbiologists. Samples from 26 systems were examined. Cells were cultivated on commercially prepared ready-to-use media. Cultures grew well on this medium and were identified as filamentous iron bacteria by microscopic examination and by their ability to deposit iron using the prussian blue reaction.
