Reduce accidents associated with handling of the electrical trailing cable and the water hose on mining equipment. Approach Two reels were mounted on a loading machine to store and release the lines as required during face operations. How It Works A hydraulic motor, which is actuated by a treadle valve in the operator's cab, controls the reel on which 50 feet of electrical power cable is stored. A spring motor resists unwinding of the other reel on which 50 feet of water hose is stored. Both reels are mounted on the right rear of the loading machine. See Figure 1. Following common mining practice, the cable and hose are anchored to fixed points at the first intersection outby the face. Tramming forward causes the cable and hose to be pulled from the reels. Depressing the treadle valve causes the electric cable reel to turn and wind-in any slack in the cable. The spring tension on the water hose reel automatically rewinds the water hose when the loader is trammed in reverse.

Quickly and cheaply consolidate underground slimes to facilitate their use as backfill and permit their easy handling for other reasons. Approach: The slurry containing slimes is pumped into active stopes and electrokinetically dewatered to provide consolidated back fill. How It Works: To densify slimes electro-kinetically two electrodes are placed in the material to be dewatered and densified. Typically, the electrodes are pieces of wire mesh fencing. One is placed on the bottom, and the other is suspended in the slurry near the surface. Figure 1 is a simplified section of a test. A d-c voltage of 100 to 400 volts is applied across the slurry. This causes the solid particles which are in suspension in the water (usually these are negatively charged) to migrate toward the anode; simultaneously, the water moves toward the cathode. Water immediately adjacent to the negatively charged solid particle surfaces contains an excess of dissolved positive ions. ESTABLISHMENT of an effective inspection system has been held essen¬tial to any international agreement that may be designed primarily to curb the testing of nuclear weapons. A number of reports and papers already have described basic inspection concepts and appraised various pro¬cedures, techniques, and methods as to their probable effectiveness in detecting and identifying violations under such agreement. This report results from a study of only one part of the contemplated inspection system, specifically the final phases embracing onsite investigations and mine examination techniques. The results and reports of earlier work were reviewed in detail, and subjects that were found to have been exhaus¬tively evaluated are recognized by reference and not redescribed here. In other instances, previously described techniques, methods, and clues were revaluated to define more clearly their practical value to the final objective of an onsite inspection. Previous documentation does not refer to a number of subjects, techniques, tools, clues, and methods considered by the study; this report treats these in detail, even though when applied singly or collectively their practical value may be questionable.

The Bureau of Mines has recently conducted a study of results obtained in analyzing similar samples of coal and coke by 25 laboratories throughout then country, in comparison with results obtained in the Bureau's coal laboratory at Pittsburgh. The purpose of this work was primarily to obtain a comparison of the methods of coal analysis used by the laboratories of the American Gas Association. Therefore, four standard samples of coal end one of coke ware prepared in the Bureau of Mines coal laboratory at Pittsburgh, and portions sent to each laboratory. At the same time, a like number of standard samples were submitted to 12 commercial laboratories rot affiliated with the Association, for the purpose of comparing their analyses with the results is obtained by the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the American Gas Association. Tire comparison is based on the average of 24 analyses by the Bureau of Mines on each kind of coal, and the accompanying curves show the deviation from this average analysis, together with deviations from the check limits of the American Society for Testing Materials.

Prevent collisions between large mine-haulage trucks and smaller vehicles parked in areas not visible to the haulage-truck operator, Approach Two electronic systems were developed to detect the presence of vehicles in the blind areas of a parked haulage truck. The systems can warn haulage truck operators of presence of vehicles that are blocked from view. The systems do not apply for trucks in travel. How It Works The systems use electronic transmitting techniques-one system is based on low-frequency radio waves and the other on very-high-frequency radio waves. Each system requires that a signal transmitter be mounted on the smaller vehicle to be detected. Continuous signals from this transmitter are sensed by receiving antennas mounted on the right front and rear of the large haulage truck. Upon receiving a signal, the receiver energizes warning lights and a buzzer in the cab of the haulage truck, alerting the operator to a possible collision hazard. Detection distance is adjustable, depending upon the size of the haulage truck, but a minimum of 30 feet was the design goal.

ROCK BEHAVIOR has proved of national interest in a variety of fields. The behavior of rock consequent to a nuclear blast was used to detect such blasts, as criteria for the design of underground military defense installations that would resist nuclear blasts, and for judging the feasibility for peaceful uses of nuclear explosives. An obvious peaceful application of nuclear explosives would be for large-scale rock excavation, and plans were presented during the year to improve the present Panama Canal or create a new canal by this method. These plans were based largely on earlier crater tests that demonstrated rock behavior when subjected to a buried nuclear blast. A knowledge of rock behavior under impact was used to evaluate the materials of the moon by means of the geometric configurations visible in the close-up pictures of the moon surface taken by the U.S. rocket Ranger 7. The composition of the moon must be considered in devising methods for taking samples of the surface layers or in designing underground shelters as bases for future explorations of the moon.

The 27,960-acre Newberry Mountains Wilderness Study Area (WSA) is located in the Mojave Desert, 17 miles east-southeast of Barstow. In 1983, the U.S. Bureau of Mines, in conjunction with the U.S. Geological Survey, investigated mineral resources of the area as part of the wilderness review process. The Newberry Mountains are underlain by Paleozoic metamorphic rocks, Mesozoic plutonic rocks, and Tertiary volcanic rocks. Eleven mines and prospects were examined. Of the seven sites within the WSA, only the Northrup Prospect is mineralized. Only a few tons of manganese-bearing rock, containing 49% manganese oxide (MnO), are exposed, but exploration may disclose larger deposits. The Azucar Mine, a past producer of gold, is the only site examined outside the area that appears mineralized. Sample data from quartz veins exposed at the surface do not indicate that resources are present; however, the occurrence could not be fully evaluated because underground workings were not accessible. Sand, gravel, and stone are plentiful in the WSA, but alternate sources outside the WSA are available.

Material and energy balances for stockpiled lignite were calculated by computer simulation techniques to determine the occurrence of spontaneous heating. Data on properties of lignite which affect spontaneous heating were required. In some cases, best values from reported data were utilized; in other cases, new data were developed. These include specific studies on the rate and conditions that influence oxidation, heat of oxidation, heat of wetting, specific heat, thermal conductivity, and permeability of stockpiles to air. These data are presented and discussed in detail for possible application to other studies. Results of computer simulations confirm past field experience on the storage of lignite containing as-mined moisture, and predict a greater risk of heat occurrence in stockpiles of dried lignite where experience is lacking. Successful storage was predicted for dried lignite of 20 pct moisture content, if it were cooled after drying and compacted to an interparticle void fraction of 9 pct (bulk density of 67 lb/cu ft) compared to 10 pet void fraction (72 lb/cu ft) for as-mined lignite.

Over a portion of the older limestone mine workings at the NIOSH Lake Lynn Laboratory, a mining health and safety research facility, a large sinkhole formed caused in part by the intersection of several tightly spaced joint sets and unusual weather conditions. The anticipated propagation of the associated roof failures threatened to encroach upon a portion of the facility’s secondary escapeway. To protect the escapeway, two cribs walls and over 80 cable bolts were installed. In addition, extensometers were installed to monitor roof movement in the escapeway. However, a large roof fall associated with the propagating roof failures in the sinkhole area partially destroyed one crib wall where the adjacent escapeway was not reinforced by cable bolts. Recent roof movement information indicates that this area is still active. Based on these measurements, steps have been taken to stabilize this portion of the escapeway. This paper discusses roof monitoring, the roof movement, the large roof fall, propagation of the roof failures, and the recent support measures undertaken to stabilize the escapeway.

Horizontal stresses are caused by global plate-tectonic forces. During 1995 alone they were largely responsible for the closing of two longwall mines in the United States. This paper presents six case histories from Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky and Alabama. In each case, a mine encountered roof falls or difficult ground conditions at the headgate caused by horizontal-stress concentrations. The problems are detailed, and the control measures adopted are described. In most cases, nearby longwall panels without stress concentrations were trouble free. The paper also discusses detailed measurements that were made at two adjacent Pennsylvania longwalls. One headgate was oriented to avoid a horizontal-stress concentration, and the other was not. Eliminating the stress concentration dramatically reduced roof support loads and roof deformation. The paper concludes that proper panel orientation and sequence is the key to maintaining headgate ground control. The optimum orientation is not parallel to the maximum horizontal stress, as previously thought, but rather it is 20° in the stress shadow of the gob. Other stress-control techniques, including artificial support, are briefly discussed.

Since he had no illumination other than fire and moonlight, he was at a disadvantage when it came to mixing it up with some of his fellow creatures. Sabre-toothed tigers, for example, could probably see quite well In the dark, and they were very real enemies. Sabre-toothed tigers haven&apos;t been seen in mining country for some time now; but it&apos;s st111 dark In a mine and, make no mistake about it, there are still enemies in the dark. The enemies are all the things that can injure you if they are not seen. Modern mines can be safe places to work for the trained miner who follows good work practices. But there are mining machines that make sabre- toothed tigers look like pussycats, and if you can&apos;t see well enough they can be ten times more dangerous.

In the course of another investigation4 during 1926 and 1927, samples of water collected from a few abandoned coal mines indicated that their drainage was usually lower in acidity than water from active mines in the same locality. In order to determine whether this condition might have a bearing on the advisability of sealing abandoned mines, a number of such mines were visited, samples of drainage were collected, and as much information as possible was obtained from officials of the mining companies and older residents of the district. The purpose of this work was to Investigate the rate at which coal is delivered from the underground working face by gathering arm type loaders as employed on continuous mining machines, to identify the factors - geometrical , geological, mechanical, or procedural - which affect the delivery rate, and to develop quantitative rate-descriptive equations for the loading function. The mathematical techniques employed were factor analysis and multiple linear regression. It was determined that the coal-cutting function of the continuous mining machine is the factor that primarily Influences the loading function The geometrical factors -the dimensions of the work area In relation to the dimensions of the mining machine -were the factors of secondary influence. Fifty-five percent of the experimental variation in the loading function was explained in terms of the six most prominent Independent variables. It is expected that this work will be useful In operations-research studies as applied to underground coal mining, and with refinement will enable mine planners to select equipment based on the operating characteristics of the equipment and the mining conditions.

"INTRODUCTION This is the fourth in a series of reports on properties of commercial motor fuels, made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Cooperative Fuel Research (C.F.R.) Committee and the Bureau of Mines of the Department of the Interior. The first report gave data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36 3/. The second resort gave the same data for motor gasolines sold during the summer of 1936 4/. The third report of the series gave the same data for motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1936-37 5/.This report covers 63 brands of gasoline represented by 1,136 samples excluding the Pacific Coast. Those from the Pacific Coast were averaged by the Pacific Coast technical group before being submitted and are published exactly as they were submitted. In some areas reports were received from five or six companies on the same brands of gasoline, whereas in other areas only one company reported on a brand. Thus, it can be seen that some of the data are more representative than others."

Develop a cost-effective diesel aerosol sampler that can be used by industry and regulatory agencies to determine the diesel exhaust aerosol concentration in mine atmospheres. The sampler must be easy to use, wearable by mine personnel, compatible with current personal sampling protocols, and inexpensive. Approach The University of Minnesota (University) and the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) have developed and tested a prototype diesel exhaust aerosol sampler. The sampler, however, was complicated and expensive to fabricate. Consequently, the USBM redesigned the sampler to simplify both manufacturing and use, and the sampler was evaluated to ensure equivalency with the prototype. Background The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has recommended that "whole diesel exhaust be regarded as a &apos;potential occupational carcinogen,&apos; as defined in the Cancer Policy of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration." In addition, the U.S. Mina Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has been directed by an advisory committee to establish a diesel exhaust aerosol standard and regulations to minimize exposure to diesel pollutants in underground coal mines.

Provide low-cost fire protection for big bulldozers. Approach A fire protection system, previously used on mobile logging equipment and adapted to surface coal augers, has now been adapted for use on large mining bulldozers. How It Works Heat sensors mounted in the engine compartment and hydraulic hose areas detect the fire, usually before the operator does. This causes the system to automatically discharge A-B-C class dry chemical extinguisher through a fixed piping system. The system can also be manually activated from either the opera-tor&apos;s cab or ground level. Location of the principal components of the system are shown in the drawing The heat sensors of the sys-tem consist of bimetallic strip switches which operate at about 10000F temperature. Switch operation results in release of compressed gas from a small storage cylinder. The gas expands to blow the dry chemicals out of the nozzles, in a spray that lasts about 15 seconds. The compressed gas used is usually nitrogen, although carbon dioxide is also used.

Laboratory tests were conducted to study removal of magnesium impurities from western phosphate rock concentrates by selective leaching. The systems evaluated included leaching with dilute sulfuric acid, with ammonium sulfate, and in an aqueous medium with sulfur dioxide gas. Set standards for the magnesium impurity level of phosphate rock concentrates are not available, but industrial practice has indicated that magnesium in excess of 0.3 percent MgO causes problems in phosphoric acid manufacture. Removal of magnesium was accomplished with all three systems. With dilute H2S04 the magnesium level was reduced to less than 0.1 percent MgO with an accompanying P205 loss of 6 percent. Magnesium oxide levels from 0.3 to 0.2 percent were obtainable with ammonium sulfate. However, the system requires concentrate roasting at temperatures of 900° C or higher, heated pulps (100° C), and large quantities of ammonium sulfate. Selective leaching was obtained using S02 gas in an aqueous concentrate slurry. Magnesium oxide content was reduced to less than 0.1 percent without loss of phosphate.

An aircraft auxiliary power unit (APU) was used as an exhaust source for evaluation and refinement of sampling and analytical procedures for gas turbine engines. The unit was also used to determine the emission characteristics of APU&apos;s in service and to study the effect of fuel composition and combustor design on exhaust emissions. Carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, oxides of nitrogen, hydrocarbons, aldehydes, particulate loading, and odor were measured at engine operating modes representing the duty cycle encountered in airline operation. Analyses showed good repeatability, and adequate sensitivity was attained in these experiments. Smoke opacity measurements were not taken owing to the lack of a high-sensitivity smokemeter. Results showed that the minimum emission levels occurred with the standard combustor and Jet A fuel. Emission rates were highly dependent on test mode, but emission patterns as a function of test mode were similar for all fuels and combustors tested. A comparison of three identical design production combustors showed a variation in average emission rates of less than 5 pct.

As a result of the new mining law implemented in August 1985 and the programs conducted by the Institute Ecustoriano de Mineria (INEMIN), which was created by this legislation, there was considerably greater activity in the nonfuels mineral sector during 1986. Over the next 2 years, INEMIN will be developing a national mining plan that will guide Ecuadorean mineral development for the balance of this century. As stage one of INEMIN&apos;s mineral study, historical records were reviewed and 300 abandoned mines and 1,200 unexplored mineral deposits were available for further investigation. In 1986, INEMIN established 5 branch offices and negotiated 250 new mining contracts with foreign companies valued at $16 million. Despite all this activity, INEMIN officials estimate that 100,000 square kilometers remain available for claim staking. Technical assistance contracts were signed with Belgium, the Federal Republic of Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom, to assist in a variety of assignments ranging from helping prepare the national minion plan to the development of industrial mineral deposits.
