The vibration and impact environment for crew members on locomotives has been investigated in a series of studies conducted by Exponent Failure Analysis Associates (Exponent) beginning in 1990. Locomotive cab vibration and impact levels were measured on a variety of locomotive models operating over many different track sections across the Union Pacific, Burlington Northern Santa Fe, CSX, Norfolk Southern, and CONRAIL systems. The comfort and health implications of exposure to the measured locomotive vibration levels were evaluated by comparison with the human vibration exposure boundaries given in the International Standards Organization (ISO) standard 2631-1:1997, the British Standard 6841:1987, European Union (EU) Directive 2002/44/EC, measurements made by Exponent on various commercial and recreational vehicles, and vibration exposure measurement data found in the literature. Methods Initially, vibration levels experienced by locomotive crews were measured and recorded at incremental speeds covering the range of normal train operation. In 2003, a method of measuring the vibration exposure continuously by means of a digital recorder was developed, allowing the vibration level over the entire run or crew shift to be analyzed. For each seating location measured, acceleration was recorded on the seat surface beneath the ischial tuberosities (pelvis) of the seated crew member and on the cab floor directly under the seat. At each of the locations, triaxial accelerometers were used to measure the vibration along the longitudinal, lateral, and vertical axes. Since the vibration environment varies throughout the route, and locomotive vibration levels have been found to be primarily speed dependent, a speed sensor was used to continuously measure the speed of the train. To evaluate the recorded vibrations levels, the data was divided into two-minute segments, which were each processed per the 1997 ISO standard for weighted RMS vibration levels and Vibration Dose Values (VDV). Additionally, PSDs and 1/3 Octave RMS values were calculated to determine the frequency content of the vibration. For each two-minute segment, the average speed of the locomotive was calculated to allow for correlation with the recorded vibration exposure values. The resulting exposure values for the entire run were calculated by combining the data from all of the two-minute segments. Since introducing the continuous method of recording acceleration, 23 seating locations have been recorded on 11 locomotives traveling 11 different routes across various parts of the United States. Mine safety personnel reported occurrences of excessive "glove-fingering" and other problems with resin-grouted roof bolt installa tions. To study these problems, the Bureau of Mines designed a test plan to (1) obtain baseline information on several resin cartridges and (2) investigate the variables involved in the installation of a resin bolt. Three brands of resin representative of the industry in January 1983 were selected for cartridge evaluation. The installation variables selected for study were the method of installation, the hole depth, and the hole annulus. These variables were studied by installing a series of bolts in concrete blocks using different values for each variable. Results of the research show overspinning the resin may cause problems, but they can be avoided by using the spin times recommended by manufac-turers. Excessive glove-fingering is not a problem if the manufacturer-recommended installation procedures are followed.

Methane, a highly explosive gas evolved during the coal-formation process, is one of the hazards of mining most difficult to overcome. It is retained between particles of coal and entrapped in strata overlying and underlying the coal beds to a degree dependent upon the permeability of the enclosing strata. Considering that methane might be encountered at any time during the mining of coal, attempts have been made through the years to minimize the sources of ignition at coal-mine faces, such as the introduction of permissible electric equipment, the prohibition of smoking and open lights, and the development of safer explosives. The sparks created when mining-machine picks contact sandstone or iron pyrites2/ constitute one source of ignition, always recognized as a possibility but never greatly emphasized in the United States until recently, when ignitions began occurring with rather alarming frequency and in widely scattered coal-producing areas.

In the vast majority of American coal mines, roof bolt holes are drilled dry, mainly because of mine operator concern with the spent water creating adverse working conditions. Wet drilling, however, can increase drilling rates and the effective lifetime of the drill bits used. This study, carried out as part of an ongoing cooperative research program between the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the University of Missouri-Rolla, shows that the large volumes of water conventionally used in wet drilling are not necessary, and the performance benefits from wet drilling can be achieved with total volume flows on the order of 0.4 L per hole. This conclusion is validated based on the measured respirable dust generated in drilling Berea sandstone. The results are confirmed using a variety of bit shapes, which are also shown to have a significant effect on penetration rate.

The explosive-expansion center-hole anchor was designed and developed for the specific purpose of use as a component of an instrument system that measures differential ground movement within a small drill hole in rock. Such anchors should have an unobstructed center hole, should be installed without a twisting action which could tangle connecting wires, and should be capable of being installed at depths in excess of 100 feet. The anchor has a thick-walled center tube and a thin-walled outer tube. Low-energy detonating cord, wrapped around the center tube and detonated with a mild end primer, expands the outer tube to produce anchorage. The explosive-expansion center-hole anchor can be installed easily in drill holes of any inclination but cannot be installed under water. Centering of the anchor is critical with regard to its subsequent holding power. The anchor is safe to make and handle.

One of the principal objectives of the Bureau of Mines program for developing super refractory materials is to obtain fundamental data on the physical properties of refractory oxides. This particular investigation obtained accurate thermal expansion coefficients for alpha alumina and evaluated, critically, those coefficients with other published values. High-temperature X-ray diffractometer measurements, by the Bureau, showed that alpha alumina expands anisotropically with expansion parallel to the c axis approximately 10 percent greater than parallel to the a axis. Thermal expansion characteristics of four different alumina samples were determined up to 1,200° C.; the results are presented in both tabular and graphical form. The combined random and systematic errors in the measurements are considered less than 3 percent above 500° C, and approximately 2 percent at 1,000° C. No differences in expansion were observed between the samples or between the heating or cooling cycles.

The following paper is one of a series on mining methods and practices being published by the United States Bureau of Mines, and deals with the sinking of the Pim shaft (No. 7) of the St. Louis Smelting and Refining Works of the National Lead Co. in the southeast Missouri lead belt. The shaft was sunk in 1922 and 1923 on a tract several miles south of the company's main plant located at St. Francois, Mo., in St. Francois County. The author is indebted to W. H. Comins, local manager of the company, with whose permission this article has been written, for his helpful criticism; and to E. T. Campbell, geologist, and M. Cross, underground shop foreman; and to W. A. Cole, manager of the E. J. Longyear Development Co., who had general supervision of the work and supplied detailed performance and cost data.

The devitrification of lithium silicate glasses was studied to determine the effect of annealing temperature, composition, and additives on nucleation and crystallization. High-purity glasses, prepared from reagent-grade chemicals, had close to optical quality when prepared by a vacuum induction melting method developed during this research, The progress of devitrification was traced by differential thermal analysis and thermal expansion for those lithium metasilicate-silica compositions containing 80 to 90 percent silica. Microscopic studies of glasses partially devitrified at various temperatures and annealing times indicated that the primary initial mode of formation of individual crystals ,vas from densely crystalline zones that filled in as crystallization advanced Of the additives tested, calcium, potassium, and sodium helped promote devitrification with the least cracking or surface deformation. Tin oxide was most effective in reducing volume contrast ion during devitrification, but was not ClS effective in preventing cracking as calcium or potassium additions.

Underground fires often prove difficult to control , and a small fire can quickly grow into a large one , endangering life and causing large property damage . Even a small underground fire may produce enough noxious gases to cause suffocation ; therefore , every precaution should be taken to prevent and control such fires . It is ironic that mine fires should be caused when utilizing materials that are in themselves fire - resistant ; yet , cutting and welding of iron and steel are proving to be common causes of underground fires in metal mines . This paper includes 19 examples of underground fires of this nature , and undoubtedly this is only a fraction of the number of similar fires that have occurred in the last few years . This paper will review some metal - mine fires caused by cutting or welding and point out precautions to be taken to prevent other fires from this cause .

The development of the Sevier Valley Coal Co.'s mine marks the opening of the Salina Canon coal district in Utah. The mine is favorably located with respect, to the existing markets of the West, and if the present estimates of the amount of workable coal in it are accurate it has many Important advantages in favor of its development. This mine is situated 18 miles east of the town of Salina, Sevier County, Utah, which at present is the nearest shipping point oh the Marysvale branch of the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad, and is about 152 miles south of Salt Lake City, which is the distributing center for much of the coal from the Carbon - Emery coal field and is the place from which nearly all Utah coal shipped to San Francisco and points on the northern Pacific coast has a common haul.

The Millet copper deposit is on the north shore of Iliamna Lake in southwestern Alaska. Copper mineralization occurs in a zone of altered limestone .adjacent to and intruded by a diorite porphyry with some diabase facies. During 1949 and 1950, the Bureau of Mines investigated this prospect as a part of the U. S. Department of the Interior program in Alaska for the development of critical and strategic minerals. Field work was begun August 8, 1949; it was recessed November 28, 1949, because of inclement weather. The work was resumed Nay 28, 1950, and completed July 3, 1950. The program of investigation by the Bureau of Nines included topographic surveying, machine and hand trenching, diamond drilling, and sampling the zones of mineralization. This report outlines the general geology of the area, gives a description of the deposit, and contains the factual data resulting from work by the Bureau of Mines.

The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Mine Safety Appliances Co., has developed a new methane analyzer system for underground applications. Methane enters coal mine ventilation air from the breakup of coal at the active face, from the collapse of roof rock during retreat mining, and from the ribs abutting virgin coal. Each source contributes varying amounts to the total emission, depending upon rate of mining, type of mining, and the character of the coalbed and adjacent strata. The evaluation of individual parameters of methane emission requires the continuous monitoring of individual mine sections over a long period of time. The methane analyzer system was developed to meet this need. The system has been installed and operated in an active mine in the Pittsburgh coalbed. The system and details of its installation and calibration are described. Data are presented to substantiate its reliability.

This is one of a. series of papers being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines, describing raining and milling methods at crushed-stone plants throughout the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total production costs might in man; instances cause embarrassment to individual producers as well as to the industry as a whole. However, operating costs are essential to technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that the scope of the cost tabulations shall not be misunderstood. This paper deals with the quarrying and crushing methods used at the Avon Mountain trap-rock quarry of the Atlas Sand, Gravel & Stone Co., in West Hartford, Conn.

A previous report of the Bureau of Mines* has supplied data for the physical and chemical properties of samples of crude petroleum produced in the eastern fields of the United States. It was issued as a preliminary chapter of a bulletin which is to cover the results of a survey of the entire country. The present report is a second preliminary chapter including figures that are available for the producing fields of the Rocky Mountain district. Work is being continued. with a series of samples from the States of Kansas and Oklahoma which will be described in a third preliminary chapter, to appear at a subsequent date. Acknowledgments. The obtaining of samples was rendered possible through the courtesy of representatives of a number of producing and refining companies operating in the Rocky Mountain district. The Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation to quantify microphone response variations that could result when the microphone is worn by a worker, as with a personal noise dosimeter, and to suggest an optimum placement and orientation of the microphone for noise exposure measurements. Previous studies have shown no significant variations in a diffuse field. This investigation, therefore, was conducted in the free-field conditions of an anechoic chamber using an anthropometric dummy as a subject, and broad band noise as the acoustic stimulus. This investigation established that, in a free field, the wearer's body does significantly affect microphone response; the response variations are a function of azimuth, and location and orientation of the microphone. Results suggest that locating the microphone on top of the subject's shoulder, oriented parallel to the body axis, should yield data comparable to that obtained using a sound-level meter.

This volume summarizes the contract work performed over a nine-month period by Westinghouse Electric Corporation on a Cost Plus Fixed Fee Contract for the Department of Interior's Bureau of Mines. The contract has been extended primarily to carry out improvements recommended for equipment produced under the contract for communicating with and locating trapped miners. These improvements will enhance the performance and utility of this equipment for operational use in actual mine emergencies. An additional complete set of the equipment will also he furnished to the Bureau under this extension. The work of the basic contract was to design, produce and test hardware in accordance with the Westinghouse response to a Bureau of Mines Request for Proposal which was based technically on recommendations of a study performed for the Bureau by the National Academy of Engineering (NAE). The data presented in this paper form the chief part of a general survey of the oil-shale resources of Indiana. Other papers* have already been published which contain data an various aspects of this resource. In combination, these papers present data with reference to the following points; (1) distribution of the New Albany shale; (2) amount of shale available; (3) homogeneity and thickness of the formation; (4) amount and quality of the oil obtained from the shale; (5) nitrogen content of the shale; (6) extractibility of the shale and its amenity to breaking; (7) some economic factors bearing upon the utilization of the shale; and (3) other miscellaneous factors and data. In the future, technical work on other phases of the general problem is expected to be done with the object of making a complete survey of this resource which is of much potential importance to the state and nation.

Longwall double-drum shearers frequently have difficulty complying with the 2.0 mg/m3 dust standard and, therefore, require the use of effective dust controls. However, before dust controls can be implemented effectively, the major individual dust sources must be determined and their relative severity evaluated. The Bureau of Mines has recently developed a sampling strategy, based upon short-term gravimetric sampling, that can identify the major dust sources contributing to the shearer operator's exposure. This technique utilizes approved gravimetric sampling equipment already available to all mine operators and can be performed by two people in 2 days. Five examples, including data analysis, are discussed with respect to various cutting sequences. In addition, typical dust source contributions obtained from studies of double-drum shearer operations regularly in compliance are included. Mine operators can thereby compare their dust source evaluation results with those from these longwalls.

The Rush & Brown mine has been one of the most consistent small producers of copper ore in the history of Alaskan mining. Approximately 50,000 tons of ore have been shipped to smelters from the property. Production has been made from two distinct and separate ore bodies of dissimilar types. The Shear Vein deposit has been mined to a depth of 500 feet below the surface without a reduction in the size of the ore shoot or the grade of ore. The Magnetite ore body has been partly mined to a depth of 200 feet below the surface. Because of the favorable production record of the Rush & Brown mine, the present need for copper and the fact that the owners were attempting to place the mine in production, it was deemed advisable to investigate this property under the Strategic Minerals Act of 1939 as a possible source of copper.
