During a recent investigation the authors were interested in determining: (1) How many points were necessary to locate the deviation curve for copper-constantan thermocouples within an accuracy of about 0.05° C., used in connection with the, "standard" thermocouple of L. H. Adams (2) Whether copper-constantan thermocouples showing considerable deviations from the "standard" were consistent throughout their calibration. (3) How reliable the extrapolated portion is - that is, the interval between -183 and -220° C. of the "standard" thermocouple.

The Bureau of Mines is currently developing methods for reclaiming the metal and mineral values contained in unburned urban refuse. One important phase of this research deals with recovering Mastic from shredded refuse using in electrodynamic separation process. The results of this study have indicated that mixed plastic concentrates analyzing 99.4 percent plastic can be consistently recovered from the light material fraction of shredded refuse, leaving a mixed paper traction analyzing 99.9 percent paper. Recovery of the plastic exceeds 99 percent.

During 1946 several high-grade limestone deposits in western Washington were examined by the Federal Bureau of Mines. The purpose of the examinations was to disclose new sources of industrial limestone and to indicate the commercial potentialities of little-known and undeveloped deposits. These examinations were part of a long-range program of investigation of mineral resources of the Pacific Northwest. The following report on the Whitechuck travortine deposit is one of a series prepared in the course of the investigations.

The work described in this Bureau of Mines report was undertaken to fill a need of industry for high-temperature heat-content data for uranium tetrafluoride. Without such data, heat balance evaluations of processes involving this substance are seriously hampered. Measurements of the heat content of uranium tetrafluoride were conducted at temperatures from 298° to 1,350° K. The melting point and heat of fusion were determined. The results are presented in suitable tabular form, and representative heat-content equations are included.

In 2006, a total of 4,573 stone mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).1 Stone mines comprised 30.7% of all mining operations. ? Mines producing the primary commodity of limestone (crushed and broken) comprised the largest number of operations (n=2,042; 44.7%). ? Stone mining operations were located in all states and territories except Delaware and North Dakota. ? Pennsylvania had the most stone mines (n=368; 8.0%), followed by Texas (n=342; 7.5%).

Data from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) indicate that a total of 44,015 employees worked in underground mining locations in 2003, corresponding to 44,778 full-time equivalent (FTE) workers. • Ninety percent of underground employees (n = 39,735) were mine operator employees. • Contractors comprised 10% of all underground mining employees (n = 4,280) and comprised only 5.8% of all underground FTEs. • The majority of underground employees worked for coal operators (73.0%; n = 32,130).

The method for predicting coke strength developed at Steinkohlenberg-bauverein, Germany, in which experimental parameters are readily determined by small-scale laboratory tests, was found to be applicable to cokes produced from industrially used blends of American coals. Predicted 1-inch ASTM tumbler indices for four industrial blends were found to be in excellent agreement with the experimentally determined values. The laboratory determined prediction parameters include the proximate analysis of the coal the size consist of the coal, and Ruhr dilatometer test data.

Background Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odorless, colorless gas that can cause illness and death by asphyxiation. Although the toxicity of CO is understood, CO exposure can occur from unrecognized sources. On April 2, 2000, a couple and their newborn infant were poisoned by CO migrating through the ground from blasting at a nearby coal strip mine into their home near Kittanning, Armstrong County, PA. They were treated at the hospital and diagnosed with CO poisoning. The infant had a carboxyhemoglobin level of 31%, the father 28%, and the mother 17%. Carboxyhemoglobin is the compound formed in the blood when CO is breathed. Persons not exposed to CO have carboxyhemoglobin levels of 0.3%-0.7%, and cigarette smokers have levels of up to 9%. Following release from the hospital, the family installed a CO detector in the basement of their home with the help of the local fire department. This Technology News briefly describes this incident to help increase awareness of the problem. It is discussed in more detail by Eltschlager et al. [2001]. Figure 1 shows the coal strip mine believed to have generated the CO. The initial suspect for the source of the CO was the furnace in the house. Only later did it become apparent that blasting at the nearby strip mine might be the culprit. A State investigation concluded that CO had migrated approximately 500ft from the blast, through the ground, and into the home. Figure 2 shows the locations and order of blasts at the mine. Initially, the mine did not plan to blast. Overburden generally consisted of weathered shale that could be dug without blasting. However, the mine decided to blast when hard sandstone that could not be dug out was encountered within 3 ft of the coal top. The blasting was intended to break up the sandstone. Blasting was done using bulk ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (ANFO) in 6.25-in holes 25-30 ft deep on a 16-ft by 16-ft pattern, with charge weights ranging from 17 to 170 lb. The closest blast to the home was 430 ft on April 17, 2000. The distance from the home to the blast area on the day when CO was first reported (March 31, 2000) was 500 ft. Twenty blasts were detonated at the mine between March 7, 2000, and April 20,2000. The blaster was careful to prevent fly rock since another home was only 150 ft away and a garage was 50 ft away. The quantity of explosive used in the blasts was sufficient to break the sandstone, but was less than would normally be used to blast overburden. The holes were typically one-third explosive and two-thirds stemming, with powder factors averaging 0.43 lb/yd3. Additionally, the muck was not immediately excavated after each blast. The heavy confinement on the explosive acted to prevent the typical release of blasting fumes into the atmosphere. Instances of CO migrating from blasts into homes have occurred before, but generally the distances involved were under 150 ft. It is believed that the blast design contributed to the confinement of CO in the ground, and discontinuities in the ground strata facilitated migration toward the residence. Upon inspection of the blast pitwall, a regular system of joints was observed. These joints are oriented roughly from the blast pit toward the house (figures 3-4).Blast-generated CO appears to have been driven into the joint system, displacing the air. When the joint system was saturated, the next succeeding blast pushed the CO into an uncased well next to the house (a high level of CO has been measured in the well shortly after a blast). From there, the CO entered the French drain system and then the basement of the house. The joints are vertical cracks through rock layers that occur on a regular spacing (figure 3). They are most common near valley slopes and are caused when valley walls converge as the stream cuts down through the rock layers. Often called hill seams, they roughly parallel the valley walls, but can curve and split, creating a pathway for gas movement (figure 5). These fractures are often encountered when underground mining proceeds close to outcrop. The system of fractures at the Kittanning blast pit was well developed and provided a path for transmission of CO both through the sandstone and up and through the overlying shales. Blasting engineers should be able to distinguish naturally occurring fractures from blast fractures and note the frequency, development, and orientation of the hill seams and their proximity to occupied houses. "During recovery operations following a recent coal-mine explosion, 12 small fires were encountered near the break line of pillar extraction in a large panel. All of the fires except one were quickly extinguished by the rescue and recovery parties. This fire had found its way into a large quantity of loose material at a corner of the cut-through between two rooms, about 100 to 150 feet from the break line of an extensive goaf; had it been necessary to seal the fire, the inclusion of this break line not only would have made the work difficult but would have made the section hazardous as it probably would have given off gas. The fire covered a floor space of about 100 square feet and when discovered was burning briskly, with the flame extending to the roof at a height of 3 or 4 feet; it was the cause of much apprehension on the part of those in charge of the recovery operations and resulted in delaying the work considerablyThe object of this article is to describe in detail the method by which the fire was brought under control and finally extinguished, so that other persons encountering similar conditions may have the benefit of the experience.When the fire was discovered a request for rock-dust, fire extinguishers, and other fire fighting equipment was telephoned to headquarters on the surface. The promptness with which fire fighting equipment and material was provided was a big factor in finally extinguishing the fire and illustrates one of the many advantages of a good organization for fire-fighting. Material was transported in mine cars to a point on the main hauling road about 1,200 feet from the fire. It was then carried to the scene of activity by workmen. The first material to be delivered at the fire was a number of fire extinguishers of various types. The contents of 30 to 35 of these were discharged on the fire and with the aid of a small quantity of rock-dust were sufficient to smother the flame temporarily. It was the opinion of several persons who were present when the fire extinguishers were used that the acid-soda type of extinguisher gave more effective results than the two or three other types used.When the contents of all of the fire extinguishers had been exhausted the fire was temporarily smothered, but as there appeared to be danger that the flame would burst forth again, means for completely extinguishing the fire were"

"INTRODUCTION Over the past several years a new type of cascade impactor that utilizes small nozzle diameters (micro-orifice nozzles) has been under development (Kuhlmey et al., 1981; Marple et al., 1981). The small nozzle dimensions allow for particles to be collected as small as 0.024 µm aerodynamic diameter on the last stage of the impactor. To obtain a reasonable flow rate of 30 I min - i through the impactor, a large number of nozzles (up to 2000) are required per stage.Furthermore, by locating the nozzles of multi-nozzle stages in a prescribed manner (described in detail by Marple et al., 1981) and rotating the impaction plates relative to the nozzle plates, uniform deposits can be achieved on the impaction plates. As described by Marple et al. (1981), the advantages of a uniform deposit impactor over the conventional impactor that collects particles only beneath stationary nozzles are: (1) maximum use of the impaction substrate surface, reducing both particle bounce (if substrates are greased) and tare weights of the substrates (if particle mass is measured gravimetrically); (2) deposited particles can be analyzed for elemental composition by X-ray fluorescence (Dzubay and Rieke!, 1978); and (3) the pressure in the impactor can be kept relatively high compared to low pressure impactors that depend on a large slip correction to achieve small particle collection (some types of particles may evaporate at low pressures). The work described in this paper investigates two additional advantages of a uniform deposit impactor. These are: (1) the possibility of collecting two separate deposits at one time on one stage for two types of analysis techniques, and (2) the possibility of utilizing piezoelectric quartz crystal impaction plates more effectively by eliminating the deposit location sensitivity nature of the crystals (Schulze-Frohlich, 1981 ).MICRO-ORIFICE UNIFORM DEPOSIT IMPACTOR (MOUDI)A photograph of an eight-stage MOUDI is shown in Fig. 1. This NIOSH Toolbox Training program contains 52 different modules designed to stimulate safety discussions among your employees. Each module is intended to be completed in roughly 10 or 15 minutes, so a Toolbox Training session can be conducted once a week for the entire year. Each session counts toward your employee’s 8-hour annual MSHA refresher training, thus saving an entire day of work.. The modules are used to refresh employees on the procedures, policies, and practices of working safely at a specific mine site and can easily be tailored to fit conditions and situations found on your property. Every module follows the same format, so that as the weeks pass, miners will start to approach every safety situation in the same way. A typical Toolbox Training session contains five basic steps that cover all the information in the module. 1. Identification of the hazard and discussions about the types of injuries typically associated with the hazard. 2. Discussions of some of the causes of the hazard. The MSHA example included with each module should be referenced. 3. After the hazard and accident has been explained and understood, discussions about best practices and tips for avoiding a similar accident. 4. Review of similar conditions or near misses from your mine site using the leading questions on the form to start a discussion. Specific examples of equipment or structures on the site that could lead to the same accident should be discussed. The blank space on the module is used to add your own remarks and questions to supplement the given information. 5. Miners fill out the training record on the back of the form with name, initials, and date of training session. The modules are designed to be kept in a standard three-ring binder and easily photocopied. This way, the same set of modules can be used for years to come. A blank form is included that can be used to create more Toolbox Training modules. The key component of Toolbox Training is to start a discussion among employees that will allow them to see the hazards around them every day and respond to these hazards in a safe and consistent manner. To start a discussion, ask questions that need more than a one-word response. Get the miners to talk about similar situations from their own experiences and give suggestions about how to fix the hazards around them. Toolbox Training is a quick and effective way to cover specific mining hazards, but it only works if miners are involved in the discussion.

A working understanding of present coal mine communications equipment and its usage is an essential prerequisite to the determination of future communications systems needs. As a means of gaining this understanding, a field survey program was planned and implemented. The plan formulated called for obtaining both qualitative and quantitative data from three main areas of interest: the types, physical condition, and performance characteristics of equipment presently used in the sample of mines to be visited; the relationship present communications has to safety and productivity; and the practical, future communications needs as de- rived through interviews with present mine management. In compliance with the original plan, the type and physical condition of equipment in use was found through at-mine interviews of personnel responsible for installation and maintenance. Further evaluation was made through the review of equipment instruction books and maintenance manuals and through in-mine inspection of communications equipment and signal distribution networks. The performance characteristics were determined through listening to conversations and noise levels and by talk-testing from randomly selected stations throughout each mine. System operation was evaluated by asking communication system users their opinions and by noting any difficulties personnel had using the systems. Plans in the second area of interest--that of relating communications to mining operations-- were to observe mining operations and usage of communications; to gain insight through interviews with mine management, from mine superintendents to section foreman; and to look for correlation between communications, production, and safety. Lastly the communication systems needs and requirements were determined from first hand interviews of mine personnel, from the analysis that lead to the individual reports on the eight mines, and from an overview of all of the mines studied. The latter was done to find commonality between the needs of the individual mines such that system requirements having the greatest universal value could be derived, thus lowering per-mine cost of equipment through economics of scale. Armed with tape recorders, backgrounds in communications technology, and with an interview questionnaire that was improved as experience was gained, engineers visited the eight mines to obtain the raw data from which the needs and requirements could be developed through analysis. During the first part of the program two days were spent at each mine so that interviews and tours could be completed, and so that full eight hour shift phone usage recordings could be obtained for statistical analysis. One day visits were sufficient for those trips where tape recordings were not made. During the later trips less attention was given to the statistical nature of communications, and more to how communications relates to the total mining operation.

Shuttle cars have undeniably proved their worth as a means of transporting coal underground; however, several factors have arisen in connection with their possible improvement. This report .discusses the effect of shuttle cars that employ rough-tread and smooth-tread tires on mine roadbed, the amount of dust thrown into suspension by the use of such tire treads, and the service rendered by each type of tire. Involved, also, in this study are observations on the use of different amounts of calcium chloride on the haulageways.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a portable, inexpensive teleoperation system for mobile hard-rock mining equipment. The system was tested on a compact loader-trammer in a simulated stope. The teleoperation system includes radio remote control and computer-assisted navigation. A recent enhancement includes video cameras mounted on the machine to provide visual information to the operator. This system allows the operator to remain in a safe location while operating the machine from a distance, thus increasing both operator safety and mining productivity.

This report presents the factual data obtained by the Bureau of Mines during diamond-drilling investigation of the Sunset copper deposit in the Index mining district, Snohomish County, Wash. The Sunset mine, first produced copper ore in 1902, but its main period of activity was from 1923 through 1930, The mine has produced 263,500 tons of ore, from which 1,500 ounces of gold, 156,000 ounces of silver, and 12,912,000 bounds of copper-were recovered. The mine has, been idle since 1946

The Bureau of Mines studied a pulsation damping device designed to smooth pulsating flow in personal respirable dust samplers. The effect on the pulsation dampener efficiency of six parameters was investigated, as follows: Volume, diaphragm elasticity, diaphragm area, center orifice area, inlet-outlet orifice area, and geometry (LID ratio). The results indicate that volume pre-dominates in determining snubber efficiency, while the other parameters become important at small volumes. Geometry has no effect on snubber efficiency. Criteria for an efficient pulsation dampener construction were obtained.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a method to measure methane and other gases during the auger mining of coal. An intrinsically safe commercial gas detector with a built-in data logger was mounted in the center of the hollow conveying auger. A sampling head through the wall of the auger conducted a gas sample to the detector. Results showed that gas levels can be monitored on a continuous basis during the auger mining of coal and the data retrieved upon completion of the hole.

During the winter of 1946 and the spring of 1947, the Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation and drilling program in the vicinity of the village of Fairplay, Wis. Fifteen diamond drill holes totaling 2,457.6 feet of bore were completed. This work was part of a general study of the zinc-producing area of southwestern Wisconsin and had the particular purpose of investigating a structural trend, determined by the Federal Geological Survey, in an area some distance from known ore bodies or active mines.

In the Bureau of Mines investigations of respiratory apparatus, a laboratory study of dust respirators has been conducted, and the results will be published in detail as a technical paper. Many industrial dust respirators, and many fabrics and filtering materials were tested. The principal results of these tests, and the conclusions drawn from them, are presented below. Reference to the patent literature discloses numerous types of dust respirators, mostly based on the filter principle. The present study included only representative filter-type respirators, purchased on the market.
