Afghanistan's mineral industry continued to be dominated by the production and export of natural gas, although several mining and related industrial projects, all under the supervision of Soviet technicians, were in the planning stage in 1982. Afghanistan produced minor quantities of barite, cement, coal, fertilizer materials, iron, and lapis lazuli, all for domestic consumption.2 Large-scale projects being investigated were a copper mine and concentrating plant at Ainak, extensive mining of the Hajigak iron ore deposit near Kabul, construction of an oil refinery at Angot, increasing production and processing of natural gas, and implementing an intensive geologic prospecting and exploration program for areas of mineral potential. Afghanistan's gross domestic product (GDP) was estimated at $2.76 billion3 and has remained stagnant for the past several years. Total exports in 1982 were estimated at $700 million, only a marginal increase from the 1981 figure of $694 million. Exports of natural gas to the U.S.S.R. earned $385 million in 1982, representing just over one-half of Afghanistan's total exports. Natural gas revenues were down approximately 11% from the 1981 level, owing primarily to increased antigovernment activity in the northern part of the country.4 About 90% of the country's natural gas production was exported to the U.S.S.R.5 About 38% of Afghanistan's development budget had been earmarked for mining and industrial projects in 1982.6

The initial Support Technology Optimization Program (STOP),Version 1.0, was released at the 19th Ground Control Conference. This original program has since been updated to Version 2.3 which was released in May, 2001. This paper describes the additional features of Version 2.3, focusing primarily on the following three aspects: (1) including uncontrolled convergence into the design requirements for standing roof supports, (2) the addition of design procedures for cable bolts as an alternative secondary roof support, and (3) the addition of new standing roof support technologies. Another new feature which should facilitate the development of design criteria for standing roof support is the capability to define ground reaction curves through convergence measurements alone without having to make support loading measurements. There are several other new features provided in Version 2.3 which are only briefly addressed in the paper. These include: (1) additional graphics capabilities to facilitate rapid assessment of support comparisons, (2)an East-West designation for support selection to more accurately provide cost and support availability data, (3) additional safety measures including a safety factor to identify support design near the peak support capacity, checks to see if the support dimensions comply with aspect ratio requirements, and a measure of roof coverage for the design layout of the support system. These new features of STOP provide more capabilities to design and analyze secondary roof support systems for conditions which could not be fully analyzed in the original version of the program.

A brief resume follows of some recent activities of the Division of Coal-Mine Inspection that have had a favorable effect on health, safety, and the reduction of injuries at coal mines: 1. The Federal Mine Safety Code for Bituminous-Coal and Lignite Mines of the United States was issued originally by the Director of the Bureau of Mines on July 24, 1946, after consultation with management and labor representatives of the coal-mining industry. The code has been used by Federal coal-mine inspectors during their inspections of bituminous-coal and lignite mines as a basis for determining the existence of unhealthful and unsafe conditions and practices in these mines. A revised code was issued by the Secretary of the Interior October 8, 1953, following further consultations with representatives of management and mine workers, and was incorporated by reference in the 1952 and subsequent bituminous-coal wage agreements. The agreement of May 29, 1946, between the Secretary of the Interior, acting as Coal Mines Administrator under authority of Executive Order 9728, and the United Mine Workers of America, covering bituminous-coal and lignite mines in Government possession, charged Federal coal-mine inspectors with the responsibility of making periodic investigations of the mines and reporting to the Coal Mines Administrator any violations of the Federal Mine Safety Code. The inspectors were active in making prompt investigations of hazardous mines that had been closed by order of the Coal Mines Administrator to determine if enough improvements had been made to allow the mines to reopen. Federal coal-mine inspectors also had temporary authority to close mines they found to be imminently dangerous, but such authority (under Executive Order 9728) was removed on June 30, 1947, when Government control of the mines was terminated.

Electric discharge ignition has been reinvestigated in a modified Hartmann apparatus for lycopodium powder with air. Minimum stored energy to ignite air dispersions of lycopodium was 25 to 30 mj; ignition occurred with 1 gram of lycopodium dispersed into the 2.7-liter vessel. Ignition energy was measured as a function of the weight of powder used, although some reservations are expressed concerning the uniformity of the lycopodium-air mixtures. In particular, wall layers of lycopodium, remaining after dispersal of 1 gram of lycopodium, were as easily ignitable as the most easily ignited air dispersion. Thus, an unanswered question has arisen concerning the role of surface coatings in the flammability of all marginally ignitable mixtures.

This laboratory has developed a sensitive electro-optical method to quantify the initial rate (R) and total amount.(MAX) of superoxide (SO) produced by single pulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAM). The method uses a microscope to visualize PAM in culture, and to video record the images during the time the cells produce SO. MAX and R are calculated from measurement of temporal changes in optical density in the images due to precipitated diformazan formed by the reaction of SO, produced by each PAM, with nitroblue tetrazolium present in the culture medium. To date, values of Rand MAX, measured due to adherence of PAM to the dish, have been compared to values obtained when quartz, coal mine dust (CMD), and kaolin were added to the medium (in vitro). R and MAX have also been calculated for PAM lavaged from animals exposed to quartz and CMD in the WVU Inhalation Facility. Presently, experiments are being done using serum which permits PAM to be restimulated by different dusts to help establish a dose response effect, and a means to study the effects of lung surfactant on modifying the toxicity of inhaled dusts. Long term, this methodology should provide useful insight· into establishing the role SO plays in the phagocytosis of inhaled dusts and bacteria, in PAM dysfunction, and in lung diseases such as pneumoconioses. A test program was conducted to determine the adequacy of molded case circuit breakers for dc electrical systems in coal mines. Mine electrical system parameters and the most severe operating conditions to be expected were determined. Tests of the interrupting capabilities of several molded case breakers were made under the worst conditions to be expected. Continuous and pulsed current carrying capability of the breakers was also investigated. Breakers from two different manufacturers passed all tests successfully. Based on the results of these tests, a set of guidelines for applying molded case breakers to dc systems has been prepared.

The electrochemical reduction of AlC13 was investigated as a process for the production of aluminum. An externally heated, single-compartment cell with a rammed refractory lining was used with molten KCl-NaCl-AlC13 electrolyte. Aluminum was deposited qt 700° to 760° C with a current of 100 to 200 amperes on a molten aluminum cathode. Chlorine was evolved at a graphite anode and collected and measured to provide a quantitative evaluation of the AlC13 reduction. Aluminum was removed from the cell by siphoning or ladling. Granular AlC13 was added periodically to replenish that depleted from the electrolyte. Concentrations of 7.5 to 17.5 percent AlC13 in the electrolyte were optimum for operation. Anode current efficiencies of 83 to 85 percent were attained, using anode current densities of 5.9 amperes per square inch and an anode-cathode distance of 4 inches. The chemically bonded, alumina liner was resistant to attack by aluminum and chlorine but susceptible to erosion at the surface of the electrolyte. Titanium diboride proved suitable for the electrical connection to the molten aluminum cathode. Aluminum of a purity equal to or better than 1100 series metal was electrowon continuously from commercial AlC13 for a period of 4-1/2 months.

A design for a laser-powered optical interferometer, using a specimen whose thermal expansion is to be measured as part of the optical system, was conceived and applied in a prototype dilatometer. The object of thin work was the development of an absolute dilatometer capable of use at elevated temperature, particularly above 1,000° C. The prototype has been operated at temperatures exceeding 1,510° C. Results obtained with this device agree within 2.5 percent with the published data for the coefficient of expansion of columbium.

Infrared spectroscopy employing attenuated total reflectance (ATR) techniques on thin films of dried gelatinized starch solution was used during Bureau of Mines research to determine the structural and impurity differences in starch products and to correlate these characteristics with the flotation response of a nonmagnetic taconite. All of the starch products evaluated gave spectrograms which were characteristic of the anhydroglucose monomer and its polymerization product. Distinct infrared absorption peaks caused by the protein molecule were observed and were used to classify the starches. Correlation of laboratory flotation of calcium-activated gangue from a Mesabi Range nonmagnetic taconite and infrared spectra produced from gelatinized starches showed that protein impurities and linear chain structure limited the effectiveness of starches as iron mineral depressants. Starch products having spectrograms similar to pure amylopectin were generally good depressants for iron oxides, were effective at about one-half the addition that was required for starches that gave infrared responses similar to pure amylose, and yielded acceptable iron concentrates containing 61.5 percent iron and 6.5 percent silica.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines seeks to increase safety and efficiency in U.S. coal mines. One approach is to develop technology for automation of a continuous mining machine. Realization of an autonomous mining machine requires development of subsystems for machine intelligence, navigation-positioning, and computer control. This report focuses on investigation of one subsystem, an onboard heading system, which would be responsible for determining and controlling machine heading. The onboard heading system investigated is a multisensor system to determine machine heading, pitch, and roll. A directional gyroscope provides heading (yaw), fluxgate sensors provide a compass heading, and gravity-referenced clinometers give machine pitch and roll. The system utilizes a dedicated microcontroller networked to an external system of computers. Tram commands, supplied to the network from external computers, are executed by the onboard system. Sensor feedback is employed for closed-loop control of machine heading by controlling pivots and turns. The report discusses operating limitations and error sources of system sensors and presents test results of closed-loop control of machine heading. Results of tests with a mining machine are used to exhibit various sensor shortcomings and to evaluate control of pivots and turns.

The Bureau of Mines conducted research to evaluate superplastic behavior in commercial magnesium-base alloys AZ6IA, ZK60A, ZW3, AZ3IB, ZWI, and an experimental Mg-12 pct Al alloy. Strain-rate sensitivity indices (m-values), maximum elongations, and effects of superplastic elongation on tensile properties were determined on fine-grained sheet. Inert-gas-pressure hemisphere-forming tests were conducted on selected sheet stock of the five alloys. Formability trials on AZ31B alloy sheet were conducted on industrial equipment for comparison with commercial superplastic forming of Zn-AI alloy. Closed-die-forming tests were performed on extruded ZK60A rod. All alloys exhibited well over 100-pct elongation, indicating superplasticity, at temperatures and strain rates near the maximum m-values. Tensile properties were generally reduced following 100-pct superplastic elongation, but not to an extent that would preclude use of the commercial alloys in the superplastically deformed condition. The potential for industrial superplastic forming of AZ31B sheet was indicated by hemisphere forming in the laboratory and substantiated in industrial forming trials.

The works recorded in this Test Report have been performed by Rade Roncar - Electrotechnical Institute of Zagreb, SFR Yugoslavia in collaboration with Bureau of Mines. The main objective of these investigations was to investigate the possibility of fabrication of thin-walled square enclosures of satisfactory safety factor in accordance with requirements of effective technical regulations. The results and the investigations can be divided in three main fields: - investigations of thin-walled enclosures with the view of determination of pressures causing technological deformations before performing tests in accordance with effective applicable regulations, - finding the safety factor by means of tests of metal-foam pressure vents, - comparison of enclosures with and without pretreatment by technological deformation.

Square Butte has no history of mineral development or production. Surface mapping, radiometric surveys and chemical analyses of rock samples reveal no mineral potential. The area has a speculative potential for petroleum and natural gas. INTRODUCTION The Square Butte Instant Wilderness Study Area, in Chouteau County, Montana, consists of 1,946 acres (788 ha) about 35 miles (56 km) southeast of Fort Benton and 50 miles (80 km) northwest of Lewistown (fig. 1). This study was performed under provisions of the Federal Land Policy and Management Act (Public Law 94-579, October 21, 1976), in conjunction with the U.S. Geological Survey, which is responsible for regional geological, geochemical, and geophysical investigations, and the U.S. Bureau of Mines, which determines the mineral potential of existing mines, prospects, or mineralized areas.

This publication contains analyses and related source data for 269 natural gas samples from wells and pipelines in 18 States. All of the samples were obtained and analyzed during, calendar year 1979 as a part of Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4862 and 576.3 The results of the investigation of the occurrences of helium are published annually to make the information available as soon as possible to the gas industry and the general public. Materials from phosphate rock mining and processing were analyzed for fluorine and uranium content as part of the Bureau of Mines program to more effectively recover resources from mining and mineral processing reject materials. The analysis of both feed and waste materials generated in the beneficiation and acidulation of phosphate rock was performed to obtain information on the disposition and concentration of these elements in phosphate rock processing streams. Fluorine was determined by a distillation-titration method and by ion chromatography. Uranium was determined by the dibenzoylmethane (DBM) method, the reliability being confirmed by roundrobin analysis of samples within Bureau of Mines research centers. National Bureau of Standards (NBS) Standard Reference Material (SRM) 120b-Phosphate Rock was also analyzed for fluorine and uranium to verify procedures and results. Fluorine values ranged from 0.3 wt-pct in gypsum filter cake to 3.7 wt-pct in phosphate rock concentrate. Uranium ranged from less than 5 µg/g in gypsum filter cake to 200 µg/g in a dried clay slime.

Background. There is currently little information regarding factors associated with specific modes of motion segment failure using a fatigue failure model. Methods. Thirty-six human lumbar motion segments were fatigue tested using spinal compressive and shear loads that simulated lifting a 9 kg weight in three torso flexion angles (0°, 22.5°, and 45°). Twenty-five segments failed via fatigue prior to the 10,000 cycle maximum. These specimens were visually inspected and dissected so that the mode(s) of failure could be determined. Failure modes included endplate fractures (classified into nine varieties), vertebral body fractures, and/or zygapophysial joint disruption. Logistic regression analyses were performed to determine whether certain morphometric variables, amount of motion segment flexion, disk degeneration scores, and/or loading characteristics were associated with the occurrence of specific failure modes. Findings. Results indicated that stellate endplate fractures were associated with increased posterior shear forces (P < 0.05) and less degenerated discs (P < 0.01). Fractures running laterally across the endplate were associated with motion segments having larger volumes (P < 0.01). Endplate depression was more common in smaller specimens (P < 0.01), as well as those experiencing increased posterior shear force (P < 0.05). Zygapophysial joint damage was more likely to occur in a neutral posture (P < 0.01). Interpretation. These results suggest that prediction of failure modes (e.g., specific endplate fracture patterns) may be possible (at least for older specimens) given knowledge of the spinal loads along with certain characteristics of the lumbar spine. Increased mechanization .of coal mines has emphasized the need for study of actual power requirements of the various machines employed in the production of coal and losses in the distribution of power to these machines. These studies are being made in order that hazards, excessive use of power, and high maintenance cost of equipment resulting from these losses may be analyzed and eliminated where possible. Research on the use of electric power in-coal mines was suggested by the Advisory Committee of the Bureau of Mines in 1937, and it was decided to begin with a study of individual machines of various types under operating conditions in modern coal mines. The transmission of power, particularly line losses and inadequate return circuits, should be a part of the investigation. This report presents some of the data of an initial study in commercial mines. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The superintendents, engineers, and other officials of the two mines studied cooperated fully and aided in setting up and transporting the test equipment, giving such information as was requested.

An equilibrium study of the system potassium carbonate, potassium bicarbonate, carbon dioxide, and water has been conducted with solutions of 20-, 30-, and 40-percent equivalent potassium carboaate concentrations. These equilibrium data cover the operating range of the hot carbonate scrubbing system for removing carbon dioxide from gas mixtures. Such data are necessary to establish the limits of purification and are used to design absorption and regeneration towers. Values of K in the relationship K = (KHCO3)2/(K2CO3)PCO2 were determined for higher temperatures of 70" to 140° C. and greater concentrations, I 20 to 40 percent, than employed by previous investigators. For the 20- and 30-percent concentrations, K is constant at a given temperature; thus, once K has been determined the equilibrium pressure of carbon dioxide can be calculated for any conversion. Variation of & values with changing conversion was observed with the 40-percent solutions, so that equilibrium calculated pressures are less reliable from average K values.
