The Greenburg-Smith impinger was developed at the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the United States Public Health Service in 1922 in the course of an investigation of dust-sampling instruments available at that time. Although it is not used extensively outside of the United States, it is now soused in this country to collect samples for the determination of any dustiness, and most of the information correlating degree of dustiness with physiological effect has been obtained by the impinger method. The chief disadvantages in the use of the regular impinger, especially in mines and other places accessible with difficulty, are its bulk, weight, and power requirements. It requires a source either of electricity or of compressed air, which necessitates connections and extension of existing supply lines to each sampling point; the only alternative is the use of a relatively large pump hand-operated with considerable effort.

"The Union Copper mine is in the Gold Hill district, Rowan and Cabarrus Counties, N. C.The mine was discovered in 1799 and first worked as a gold mine; but copper was encountered at depth, and the property became an important producer of copper. It is estimated that the mine produced 5,000,000 pounds of copper before operations were discontinued in 1907.As part of the strategic minerals program, the Bureau of Mines conducted a development project on the property from July 1943 to November 1943. Eight diamond-drill holes, totaling 2,500 linear feet, were drilled to delineate the ore body. Analyses of 205 core samples were made.Tabulations of sample analyses and drill-hole logs are presented in this report.The project work embodied in this report was under the immediate supervision of Austin B. Clayton, project engineer, and the general supervision of H. B. Ewoldt, district engineer for North Carolina and Tennessee. The preliminary report, written by Austin B. Clayton, was revised and the various figures redrawn for publication by T. J. Ballard under the general supervision of M. H. Kline, chief, Raleigh Branch, Mining Division.Acknowledgment is due the Metallurgical Branch for analytical determinations of the samples.The mine property is 1.5 miles southwest of the village of Gold. The upper parts of the veins in the district were first worked for gold; however, the increase in the sulfide content of the veins with depth rendered the amalgamation process for gold recovery ineffective, and the mines were closed.The period of greatest activity at the Union Copper mine was from 1899 to 1906. At an earlier period the oxidized and leached part of the lode near the surface was mined from a working known as the ""big cut,"" the reported yield of which was $300,000 in gold.3/ The mine has not been operated since 1907.J. T. Pardee3/ lists the probable value of the production of the Union Copper mine as $1,050,000, of which about $675,000 was the value of some 5,000,000 pounds of copper produced."

During the last week in March and the first week in April, 1973, the Naval Underwater Systems Center measured the 76 Hz magnetic field strength (in Wisconsin and Texas) produced by both the elevated and (newly installed) buried Wisconsin Test Facility (WTF) north-south (NS) antennas. The principle result obtained from these measurements is that there is no measurable difference in performance between the WTF buried and elevated NS antennas.

The design, development, and testing of hydraulic props to provide a lightweight, high strength, recoverable unit is described. Modifications in design incorporating threaded components resulted in the development of a lightweight hydraulic prop fabricated from aluminum alloy tubing. This new design facilitates interchange and replacement of component parts, and the physical properties of the material are not changed as they are when welding is required. The new prop is 65,000 pounds and has a maximum load capacity of a lower weight-to-load capacity ratio than the hydraulic props now available.

One of the most difficult, longstanding engineering problems associated with coal mining is the catastrophic failure of cog mine structures known as bumps. For more than 70 years, researchers and practitioners have assembled a wealth of technical information on coal bumps in an attempt to understand and control them. However, many technical issues raised long ago are still being debated today. This paper examines past experiences and recognizes achievements in the realm of coal bumps. U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) researchers collected and analyzed 172 coal bump incident reports and compiled the pertinent statistics into a database. Actual field studied are also discussed. Examination of past experience has shown that there is no one set of defining characteristics that is responsible for coal bumps. In all cases, bumps occur when complex arrangements of geology, stress, and mining conditions interact to interfere with the orderly dissipation of stress. However, it is evident from the database that a tremendous reservoir of knowledge has been established from past experience that has unquestionably limited the severity of coal mine bumps in the United States.

"The new permissible blasting device, Cardox, utilizes as a blasting agent liquid carbon dioxide which is discharged.as a gas from a steel container or shell. The loaded shell is placed in a borehole, stemmed, and tamped in a manner similar to that employed with explosives, and is fired by electricity.The Bureau of Mines' approval for use of the device in coal mines was granted as Approval No. 1 under date of October 3, 1928; as the result of tests made under the conditions and requirements of Schedule 20. There have been three subsequent extensions whereby minor modifications in the original design were granted.The permissibility of the device is subject to the following conditions; (1) It shall be in all respects similar to the sample submitted for tests; (2) certain thicknesses of disc and. weights of heater ingredient and of carbon dioxide, all of which are set forth in Table 2 under the provisions governing permissibility, must be used: (3) the rear cap must always be in place after the shell has been charged, to prevent accidental firing; and (4) firing must be done by means of a permissible-type blasting unit.The permissibility of Cardox was established by gallery tests similar to those used in testing explosives for permissibility. In these tests the shell was discharged into gallery 1 without causing any ignition of gas and air or of gas, dust, and air mixtures there. The conditions of charging the shell, such as weight of the ingredients of the heater element, the carbon dioxide charge, and thicknesses of the disc, were varied according to the conditions under which it would be likely to be used in blasting. The tests made in gallery 1 are here described in detail, as are also the tests which have been made for determining the propulsive strength of the device and the quantities of poisonous gases given off when a shell is discharged."

Data or input files are used to describe the mine's ventilation system and physical characteristics necessary for ventilation calculations as well as the physical or mechanical disturbance to be modeled and simulated Data files are organized into lines of categories or groups of information Each line contains multiple sets of information or data items Data lines are read by the program, and the data items provide information to the program variables The data file is in American Standard Code for Informa¬tion Interchange (ASCII) format, sometimes called a DOS text format Creation or modification of a data file is accomplished with text editor software Most word pro¬cessors are also capable of making the required ASCII type files A sample data file and its associated output are included in appendix B. "INTRODUCTION Toxic gases in the products from the detonation of explosives are one of the hazards in blasting underground. Investigations by the Bureau of Mines 4/5/ have shown that the oxygen balance of the explosive is an important factor in the control of toxic gases. This balance is considered in determining the composition of modern metal-mining explosives for blasting underground, and application of the concept has reduced the volume of toxic gases generated.The chemical nature of the material being blasted also influences the composition of the toxic gases produced. Under some conditions of blasting in massive pryrite, unsafe concentrations of sulfur dioxide and hydrogen sulfide have been found.Experiments with the O-J apparatus 8/ have shown that there is an increase in the volume of carbon monoxide in the gaseous products when permissible explosives are detonated in contact with coal dust. Thus, reactive materials of a reducing nature adjacent to explosives loaded in drill holes may decrease the effective oxygen balance of the explosive and cause the volume of toxic gases to increase.Several blasting accessories of reducing nature have been introduced recently for use in coal or metal mines or tunnels. In practice these are loaded adjacent to the explosive where conditions favor reaction with the products of detonation. The effects of this loading on the gaseous products obtained from the shot are indicated in this report. Broad consideration was not given the efficiency, usefulness, or over-all safety of these devices, but the practical significance of the hazard resulting from increased volume of carbon monoxide is discussed."

A method has been developed in the laboratory for successfully treating titaniferous magnetite ore from the deposit at Iron Mountain, Wyo. The ore is roasted with 15 percent sodium carbonate to convert the vanadium to a water-soluble form and fix the soda for the subsequent electric-smelting step. Approximately 90 percent of the vanadium is recoverable in a product assaying 80 percent V2O5. The leached calcine is briquetted and smelted in a graphite-lined electric-arc furnace. Substantially all of the titanium is recovered in a soda slag, assaying 60 percent TiO2 and 2 percent Fe, which can be upgraded to 75 to 80 percent TiO2 by leaching with dilute sulfuric acid. The upgraded slag could be utilized for the production of titanium dioxide pigments or titanium tetrachloride. About 90 percent of the iron is recovered as pig iron, containing only minor amounts of vanadium, titanium, and sulfur. The high TiO2 slag compares favorably with slag containing about 70 percent TiO2 being produced by the Quebec Iron & Titanium Corp. at Sorel, Quebec. The data obtained from this investigation indicate that a feasible process has been developed for treating Iron Mountain ore, and larger-scale testing is warranted to develop engineering data for the ultimate utilization of this deposit as a source of titanium, iron, and vanadium. There are adequate supplies of basic raw materials, electric power, water, sodium carbonate, coal, and petroleum products within fairly short distances of Cheyenne and Laramie, Wyo., the nearest cities and probable plant- and labor-supply points.

Develop a user-friendly computer program that permits those interested in mine health and safety to access and analyze on a personal computer (PC) employment, production, and accident data for U.S. coal and metal-nonmetal mines. This software is being designed with a major focus on flexibility and case of use. The Mine Accident Decision Support System (MADSS) will be available for distribution in mid-1994. Currently, the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) is seeking volunteers willing to pilot test a preliminary version of the software and to provide suggestions for its improvement. Background Since 1975, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has compiled large data bases of information about U.S. mines and the reportable accidents, injuries, and illnesses that have occurred in those mines. Employment and production data arc collected on a quarterly basis from each mine and accident information is collected on an incident -by-incident basis. The USBM has compiled estimated costs for each of these accidents using computer models. All of this information is potentially useful to mine health and safety researchers. However, it has been underutilized because it is stored in large mainframe data bases that arc inaccessible to many users and/or are cumbersome and difficult to use.

"INTRODUCTION The Krausse Estate property was the site of the first lead silver mining in western Kentucky, which began with the sinking of the Andrew Jackson shaft in 1835 3/. The earliest miners considered fluorspar of no value and threw it upon the waste dump, but Crittenden County later became an important part of the western Kentucky and southern Illinois fluorspar district 4/, which has produced about 90 percent of the fluorspar mined in the United States. By 1945, approximately 35,000 tons of fluordpar ore had been produced from the Estate property.This property can be reached by traveling west from Marion on Highway 60 from 2.5 miles, than northward 3 miles. The road from the paved highway to the mines is very rough but not impassable even in bad weather. Ore is hauled 5 1/2 miles by truck to custom mills at Marion, a town of 2, 000 population, where the Illinois Central Railway was a freight station.Hurricane Creek runs through the eastern part of the property. The surface slopes steeply upward to west from the creek, and the topography is rough. The top of the hill is about 150 feet above the creek.The climate permits working throughout the year, but spring rains cause surface water to enter mine and water apparently drains southward along the fractured fault zones, so that when no water is being pumped at properties north of the Krausse Estate a heavy flow comes on the Krausse."

"The interaction of amorphous silica particles with several hydrogen bonding agents (H2O,, C2H,OH, C,H,NO) was investigated by monitoring the changes in the bulk and surface IR vibrational modes of silica using photoacoustic spectroscopy, It is argued that the intensity of the silanol band at 3747 cm-1 provides (an inverse) quantitative measure of the interaction of surface groups, along with the shift in the broad hydroxyl band, the interaction following the order C,H,NO > C2H2OH > H2O.The use of IR spectroscopy to study the adsorption on solid surfaces is well documented in the literature,"" For example, hydroxylation of a clean silica surface results in the formation of the free silanol group Si-OH, with a sharp IR band near 3747 cm-1. Further hydroxylation produces a broad band near 3500 cm-1, which is believed to result from various hydrogen-bonded silanol bands leading to a multilayered surface structure of few nm.3-6 Earlier studies had indicated a relationship between the surface silanol band and various chemical activities of silica such as cytotoxicity,7-9 catalysis,10-12 and others.13 Recent studies from our group14-in which the intensity of the silanol band and cytotoxicity of silica, heat-treated at various temperatures up to 1095°C, were investigated-have provided a strong correlation between cytotoxicity and intensity of the silanol band.Coating of silica by PVPNO (polyvinyl-2-pyridine N-oxide with the empirical formula C7H8N0), a strong hydrogen bonding agent, is known to reduce the cytotoxicity of silica, presumably by chemically blocking the silanol groups from phospholipids.15 This interaction of the hydrogen bonding agents with the silica can be studied by IR spectroscopy, and Knozinger16 and Rouxlet and Semples17 have used transmission IR spectroscopy to study the effect of various chemicals on the surface IR modes of silica. However, one of the major disadvantages of transmission IR spectroscopy is that the sample preparation (grinding and mixing with KBr and pelletizing) usually distorts the surface modes (see, e.g., Ref. 14) and there is always a doubt about the effect of the sample preparation on the measured properties, In recent years, photoacoustic (PA) spectroscopy has become the technique of choice for studying the IR spectra of samples in their natural state, since no sample preparation is necessary.18,19 Moreover, according to a recent paper,20 the relative intensity of the surface modes in PA spectroscopy of silica particles is much higher than that in transmission FT-IR spectroscopy. Consequently PA spectroscopy is ideal for studying the surface chemistry, In this work, we have used PA spectroscopy to investigate the interaction of three hydrogen bonding agents (C7H8NO, C2H5OH, and H20) with the silica surface by monitoring changes in the surface IR modes, Our results show that the surface IR modes get perturbed to a larger extent than the bulk IR modes in interaction with the hydrogen bonding agents, Moreover, whereas in the earlier studies, the shift of the broad silanol band near 3500 cm-1 was used as a measure of the interaction with hydrogen bonding agents,16,17 here we show that the relative decrease in the intensity of the sharp silanol band near 3747 cm-1 also serves as a quantitative parameter for the relative surface coverage and surface modification, Details of this work are given below,The Cab-O-Sil samples of silica used here were obtained from the Cabot Corporation of Tuscola, IL, In our earlier studies,14,20 we have shown these particles to be amorphous and about 0.05 am in size, For coverage of these particles with H20 and C2H50H, the following procedure was employed. "The carnotite ores of Colorado and Utah were the chief source of radium for many years. In the fall of 1922; news of the very rich deposits of radium ore discovered in the Belgian Congo caused almost complete cessation of domestic production. The Congo ore contains pitchblend and a number of alteration products, including the new minerals bequerelite, curite, kasolite, stasite, and dewindite. Reports indicate that a considerable amount of ore containing over 50 per cent U308 has been produced. It seemed certain that radium could be extracted from the Congo ore at a much lower cost than from the relatively low-grade carnotite; and in order to preserve their elaborate marketing organizations, the larger American producers made agreements with the Belgium syndicate to market the foreign product in this country. The price of radium has been held at $70 per milligram. Extraction of radium from carnotite by the usual methods does not appear to be profitable at that price. With one exception, all American firms ceased production after their accumulated stocks of ore had been treated. The United States Radium Co., which continued to treat carnotite for several years, has recently shut down its plant.Although there is probably a large profit derivable from the treatment of Congo ore, it is not likely that the Belgium Syndicate will meet sufficient competition to cause any reduction in the present quotations. It is not known how long the high-grade ore will last, but when exhausted the price of radium may be expected to advance. According to K. L. Kithil3 it is the opinion of interested parties that, so far as can be forseen, radium will in future years never again be obtained at the present low price.Carnotite contains the valuable element, vanadium, which is not present in the Congo ore. The recovery of-vanadium is an important factor in the cost of extracting radium from carnotite, and under favorable conditions carnotite can be profitably treated for the vanadium alone. Vanadifecous sandstones are found ranging all the way from roscoelite (vanadium mica), containing little or no uranium; to a high-uranium and low-vanadium carnotite. Ores containing 2 per cent or more U308 are classed as radium ore and are sold on the basis of the uranium content, which is proportional to the radium content. Only in exceptional cases have ores been evaluated on the basis of both the radium and vanadium contents, although the presence of vanadium has undoubtedly influenced the price of radium ore."

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory drillability studies on nine rock types using two mining-type percussive drills. Percussive-bit action was simulated by dropping a known weight on a rock sample to obtain a coefficient of rock strength for each rock drilled. While no single physical property of a rock is completely satisfactory as a predictor of penetration rate, coefficient of rock strength showed a better correlation with penetration rate than did other physical properties. Results also indicate that over the range of energies investigated, energy per unit volume in a given rock is independent of blow energy. A drillability index for the percussive system is proposed that utilizes the coefficient of rock strength test to determine energy per unit volume for a given rock which, along with the work rate of a given drill and the bit diameter, is used to predict the penetration rate as shown in the following equation: [R = 4P pD2 E, where R = penetration rate, in/min, P = work rate, in lb/min, D = bit diameter, in, and Ev = energy required to produce a given volume of rock, in lb/in3.] Laboratory tests indicate this method's potential as a simple and reasonably accurate method of predicting penetration rates with any percussive drill and bit combination.

During the past 15 years the Bureau of Mines has made and published several hundred analyses of typical petroleums and has developed a system of interpreting the analyses and of classifying crude oils. In describing crude petroleum frequent reference is made to the "base" of the oil, a usage the petroleum industry has found convenient. As part of its general study of the characteristics of crude oils, therefore, the Bureau of Mines has developed a system of classifying them according to "base." This system as first published in 19274 was limited to four classes and in its original form is no longer considered adequate. Since the system was first published the Bureau has analyzed a large number of crude oil-, including representative samples from nearly every important producing field in the world, and has found that the system of classification could be revised and amplified to advantage. The revised system is presented herein. Bulletin 2916 states that many oil producers and refiners use the word "base" much as it is used in pharmaceutical work. For example, the "base" or "basis" of an ointment or salve is the fatty material (lard, petroleum, or lanolin) used as a vehicle or carrier for the active medicinal principles. Apparently many of the pioneers in the petroleum industry considered crude oil similar in nature to these medicinal products in that it consists of a semisolid, nonvolatile base and 1 volatile portion can be distilled off to make gasoline, kerosene, and other products. Many crude oils when chilled slowly deposit a waxy material (paraffin); this fact may have been one reason for the use of the term "paraffin base" in referring to such oils. Almost all of the petroleum first discovered in the United States was of this nature; not until the oil industry was extended to California and along the Gulf coast was petroleum found that contained no wax but apparently did contain asphaltic material Accordingly, these oils were known as "asphalt-base" oils. The use of this term, however, seems unfortunate, as better-grade oils of this type contain little if any asphalt; the descriptive term "naphthene base" now seems to be a more desirable term than "asphalt base." The term "intermediate base" is also used commonly in referring to oils intermediate in oharacteristios between those of paraffin and naphthene base.

To develop a reliable, remotely-controlled, mobile roof support to eliminate the need to set posts, cribs, or props while extracting coal pillars. Approach The primary danger during pillar extraction is premature caving of the mine roof. The roof must cave predictably and dependably to ensure the safety of miners. Support during retreat mining is usually obtained by setting posts, cribs, props, roof bolts, or a combination of these devices. These are set manually by miners in the working area. To help minimize the danger to mine workers and to equipment posed by premature falls, the Bureau of Mines developed the mobile roof support (MRS) system to secure the roof during pillar extraction. How It Works The Mobile Roof Support (MRS) is eight-feet-wide, ten-feet-long and five-feet-high, with twelve inches of ground clearance. It is ruggedly built and exerts less than 20 psi ground pressure. The MRS is powered by a 40-hp, 460-v AC permissible motor. The reversible, variable tram speed is 80 ft/min on a 20-percent grade. It is tire-mounted, has a trailing cable, and is remotely controlled either by a radio or a tether communication cable. The machine carries four 50-ton jacks which serve as props for working heights from seven to fifteen feet. Two jacks are chassis-mounted and two are on swing arms. Each jack has a cap which distributes the roof load to three paints. The swing jacks form a breaker row to stop falling roof and prevent caving Into the work area. One jack has a visual load indicator and a second is wired to the machine lighting system. Blinking lights indicate when the preset loading is being exceeded. In the case of excessive loads, an ability to remotely jettison either or both swing jacks has been incorporated into the system to permit removal of the MRS while the roof is still supported.

"The relationship between exposure to coal mine dust and the development of various respiratory diseases is well recognized. The cause of these diseases however. Is still uncertain. To study this cause-effect relationship, It Is necessary to characterize the coal mine dust In terms of the quantity of dust present and mineral content of the dust. Dust samples were collected using a Portable Continuous Aerosol Monitor (PCAM) and 4-stage cassette Impactors at various locations in an upper Freeport seam coal mine In West Virginia. The samples were analyzed using an X-ray microdiffraction film technique and energy dispersive scanning electron microscopy. This paper presents the results of the first phase of this characterization work which Includes determining the size distribution of the dust and the mineral content of the size intervals.IntroductionDiseases associated with dusts in coal mine environments continue to afflict miners in today's modem mines. These diseases still persist because, as Olishifski points out an employee rarely experiences exposures to a single environmental stress but rather to an Intricate Interplay of multiple stresses.(1) In the case of coal mining the multiple stresses are varying sizes of dust particles originating from coal imbedded minerals. The site of this Intricate Interplay Is the miner's lungs and the resulting diseases are a function of the composite dust exposures.The proper study of coal mine dust toxicity requires that the dusts used replicate existing coal and mineral dust compositions in their relevant size fractions. The purpose of this project is to develop the size and mineral content data necessary to support this ongoing toxicological effort.Existing coal mining standards and regulations also address total and respirable dust exposures. These dust terms refer to both the quality and quantity of the dust segment in the mine atmosphere. Dust quality addresses its coal and mineral content. whereas dust quantity Is described by mass per unit volume (mg/m3) The comprehensive characterization of coal mine dust exposures will enable revision of these standards and regulations to address the specific minerals and size fractions found to be toxic to human lung tissue."

This paper is a tabular compilation of data contained in a series of information circulars dealing with mining methods and costs at a large number of mines in the United States and some foreign countries. There circulars have been published from time to time during the years 1929 to 1934 inclusive. From time to time, as enough data became available in these circulars, other circulars and. bulletins have been published in which the data bearing upon different phases of nine operation were summarized, discussed, and analyzed. The present paper is a compilation of data on costs of drifting and crosscutting contained in earlier circulars, .designed to assemble this information in a convenient form for reference without attempting lengthy discussion of details of drifting and crosscutting practice. For such details the reader is referred to the circulars on individual mines.
