A guide to the development and use of an APL computer program for the analysis of load-flow problems is presented. The program is designed to provide an interactive method of load-flow study to improve underground coal mine electrical system design and safety. The theoretical basis for load-flow analysis is discussed, along with per-unit calculations which facilitate computation. Specific input/output, execution and network modification procedures are presented for using the APL program. In addition, typical results are given for examples taken from power system analysis literature.

Pittsburgh bed and Lower Freeport bed coals were tested in the U.S. Bureau of Mines two-stage froth flotation pilot plant, which utilizes a new flotation process to remove pyritic sulfur. The process consists of a first-stage coal flotation step to remove coarse, free pyrite and other refuse in the tailings. The clean coal froth concentrate is then repulped and treated with a coal depressant, a pyrite collector, and a frother to selectively float the remaining pyrite in a second stage. Results in the pilot plant were excellent, comparing well with those obtained in laboratory batch tests. That is, about 70 percent of the pyrite present in the Pittsburgh bed coal and about 90 percent of the pyrite present in the Lower Freeport bed coal were removed with excellent final clean coal recoveries.

Laboratory crushing experiments were conducted on a range of low- to high-volatile bituminous coals to investigate the various factors influencing airborne respirable dust (ARD) generation. This research was conducted to identify the principles of ARD liberation from the coal product. Five U.S. bituminous coals were uniformly prepared and processed through a double roll crusher located in a low-velocity wind tunnel. Experimental factors studied included inherent coal seam constituents, coal grind ability, specific energy of crushing, product size characteristics, dust cloud electrostatic field, and specific ARD generated. The results of this investigation indicate that a combination of several factors are associated with ARD generation. One factor is the effect of coal rank, described by the inherent moist fuel ratio, on the product size characteristics, defined by Schuhmann size function parameters. Another key factor is the effect of air dry loss(ADL) moisture in the coal seam on the breakage-induced electrostatic field of airborne dust. The effect of these factors is that different percentages of <10-m coal particles are dispersed as ARD. A discussion of electrostatic field principles, coal ADL, and its effect on ARD generation is presented.

[The purpose of this report is to present results of tests on the effectiveness of a spray of water mist, commonly called compressed-air water blast or water blast, in reducing the concentration of dust present in the air shortly after blasting and during mucking of the blasted material. Many observations have been male on the effectiveness of such ,sprays, but published quantitative information on comparative dust concentrations with and without their use, obtained by dust-sampling methods in use in this country, is rare if not absent. Tests conducted. in South Africa about 19164/ and more recently in England5/,6/ have shown that such sprays reduce the dust concentration to very low values within a fen minutes after blasting.]

"A 1986 report by the U.S. National Committee on Blomechanlcs (1) describes lung disease as a major national health problem. The report cites three areas that would benefit from a better understanding of the vibratory patterns of the lung. These areas are outlined below.1. In cases of respiratory distress, pressure driven artificial respirators are used. A new technique using high frequency respiration is quite promising, but the pressure distribution in the lung as a function of frequency is not yet known. At these frequencies of 1 to 60 Hz, the lung expands asynchronously (2) and a better understanding of these expansion nonunlformltles could provide valuable Information about the mechanics of high frequency ventilation.2. Listening to the sounds In the lung can yield valuable Information about the state of the lung. To improve the technique, a better understanding of how acoustic waves propagate through the lung is needed.3. The response of the lung as It Is subjected to acoustic excitation, dynamic loading or shock waves is not well understood. A better knowledge of these responees can lead to improved treatment for patients subjected to either explosive pressure waves or car crashes.4. Researchers are measuring the acoustic Impedance of the Iung to detect early states of dysfunction. Sneckenberger and Whitmoyer (3) have reported Impedances obtained at acoustic frequencies up to about 6000 Hz. However, It la not certain which parts of the lung are responding to the acoustic excitation.To Investigate the vibratory characteristics of the lung, excised rat lungs were excited via the trachea with acoustic waves at frequencies up to 6000 Hz. Thie paper describes an Instrumentation system, utlllzlng time-averaged holographic Interferometry, to detect and quantify the response of the lung surface to the acoustic excitation."

The jig men of the Tri-State (Joplin-Miami) zinc district complain about the flakiness of their mill feed. They believe that the flakiness of the composite grains of gangue and mineral are to blame for losses of zinc; that is, that the flaky grains in the jig tailings have higher zinc tenor than the cubical grains. Although the evidence which follows contradicts this belief, no effort is made to give a final and conclusive answer. On the other hand, there is outlined a positive and mechanical method which the operator may use to pursue this and similar investigations. DISCUSSION OF SCREENING METHOD Hand-sorting is obviously not satisfactory for separating cubical grains from flaky grains because the personal influence can not be removed. Screens, however, may be used with success. A set of each of two types of screens is required; namely, the square-hole type and the rectangular (rectang, oblong) type. The square-hole screens must be of the double Tyler scale; that is, the order of the sieves should be after the fourth root of two instead of the customary square root of two; close sizing is important. The size of the rectang screens may be selected by trials so that a part of the material already closely sized on the square-hole screens, will pass the oblong holes. Obviously, the cubical grains will remain on the rectang and the flaky grains will pass through. Hence the mode of operation is to screen first on square-hole screens and then split the products on the oblong-hole screens.

This report is one of a series describing investigations within the Missouri River Basin in Montana made by mining engineers of the Bureau of Mines Minerals Division, Region II. The primary purpose of these investigations is to provide information to agencies of the Department of the Interior and and others concerned with the planning of Federal power developments in the basin. The report contains such factual data as have been authorized for public distribution. The field investigations in Broadwater County were made during the late fall of 1948 and the summer of 1949. Virtually all known metallic mineral deposits and some nonmetallic mineral deposits within the county were investigated. However, some long inactive mines and prospects on which little or no information is of record may have been omitted inadvertently. Many of the mines and prospects have been inactive for extended periods. Most of the underground workings now are inaccessible. Because of such conditions, impressions gained by the inspection of surface features have been supplemented necessarily, where possible, by information obtained from Federal and State publications.

Continuously monitor and record respirable dust levels underground by a reliable, sensitive, and fast-response device. Approach A light-scattering photometer, having a LED (Light Emitting Diode) light source and other significant improvements, has been designed and incorporated into a portable continuous monitor. How It Works The monitor continuously draws air into the sampling inlet through a cyclone that removes dust particles larger than respirable size. The dusty air enters the photometer vertically downward through a cylinder which is intersected by the optical system. (This cylinder appears as a circle in the drawing of the photometer.) The center of he column of dusty air intersects a beam of pulsing light from the LED, causing some of the light to be reflected, scattered, and refracted. Only the light that is scattered at an angle of about 700 from the light beam passes through a lens to the photodetector which generates an output voltage Signal proportional to the dust content in the air. Introduction The Cost program was developed to provide the planning engineer with a tool to evaluate the cost implications of the technical mine design decisions. Direct costing methods are employed, where feasible, to provide greater detail and accuracy in the primary cost centers. Options have been provided in the cost computation, economic analysis, and output data subsystems to increase the flexibility of the system. Computer Program The program is written in Fortran IV for use in the IBM System 360/370 computers. i. Main - The main routine reads and stores input data from three sources, user input, Cost Data Library, and data transfer from the Master Design Simulator. Data is trans¬ferred to the appropriate subroutines, as they are called, by means of labeled common blocks. ii. Subroutine CSTCOM - is a data modification routine which computes the peripheral charges related to labor and supervisory costs. iii. Subroutine MANPWR - interrogates section data to determine the total labor and supervisory costs for each cost center. iv. Subroutine CAPCST - computes the total capital investment for each cost center, including the economic life and salvage value of each element. The nature of competition in the coal market tends to deplete the most favorable coal reserves first, and forces subsequent development of mines in more extreme ground conditions such as those associated with multiple-seam mining. In fact, 70% of the United States coal reserves are in multiple-seam situations. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting research to develop mine design algorithms that will result in safer multiple seam mines. This paper presents an overview of multiple seam issues in the central Appalachian coalfields. To date, more than 50 case histories have been analyzed from 20 operating mines in Eastern KY, Western VA, and Southern WV. Each case history is classified according to the degree of multiple-seam interaction, ranging from no apparent interaction to severe interaction with direct impacts on mine safety and resource recovery. The case histories are also examined with regard to amount and geologic characteristics of interburden and overburden, and design stability factors. The sequence of mining has also been found to be critical when the lower seam is fully-extracted. This paper compares current case histories to traditional rules of thumb. In addition two situations were modeled using LaModel software. LaModel has been upgraded to import pillar grids and topographic data from AutoCAD files. The cases presented demonstrate vertical stress capabilities of LaModel.

"One-phase of the accident prevention program of the Bureau of Mines is the determination of the explosion hazards of various combustible gases and vapors encountered,mining and allied industries and the development of means and methods of eliminating them.Gasoline is foremost among the combustible-liquid's as to quantity used and variety of applications in industry, It is a chief contributor to the causes of fires and explosions, taking an enormous yearly toll in property damage and considerable loss of lives.The results presented in this report evaluate the effect of various gaseous inert substances, which owing to their chemical composition, should be of considerable value in the prevention of gasoline fires and explosions. The substances investigated are as follows: Nitrogen (N2), automobile exhaust gas (85 percent N2 + 15 percent CO2), carbon dioxide(CO2), dichlorodifluoromethane (CCl2F2-Freon-12), trichloremenofluoromethane (CC13F-Freon-11), and dichloromonofluoromethane (CHCl2F-Freon-21).The general term ""gasoline"" designates a combustible liquid of such characteristics as to give satisfactory operation without preheating in spark-ignition-type internal-combustion engine. It comprises a complex hydrocarbon mixture having a limiting distillation range and produced commercially by distilling or ""cracking"" crude petroleum or other various petroleum stocks. Small proportions of other substances may be incorporated in the gasoline to enhance its antiknock properties or operating characteristics in internal-combustion engines and to increase its stability during storage, transportation, and use.It is thus seen that gasoline may have rather wide variations of chemical and physical properties, and it would: appear that the results of any investigation dealing with one particular gasoline might not be applicable to other types. However, as indicated by the results given in this report, the inflammable properties of different gasolines at normal atmospheric temperatures are influenced largely the mars volatile hydrocarbons containing 5, 6, 7 carbon atoms- in the molecule, and that the heavier constituent of higher molecular weight have a minor influence on the inflammable properties at ordinary temperatures."

"INTRODUCTION The hazards to be encountered in temporarily or permanently abandoned underground mines, quarries, and open pits are numerous, and hardly a year goes by without several reported cases of fatal or serious injuries occurring to unwary people who enter these old mines. Persons visiting mining areas for the first time, tourists, and young people, especially, proceeding in the spirit of adventure common to youth or to the venturesome have suffered many such accidents during exploration trips. The possibility of salvaging salable or usable equipment prompts men and boys to go into old mines, some through ignorance of the attendant hazards, but some jeopardize their lives hopeful of gain (in some cases pitifully small), thinking the hazards are not dangerous and that they can ""get away with it.""Persons fall into unprotected holes, some seek shelter from storms under high banks, and quarries and open pits are often chosen as places for recreation, picnics, swimming, etc; all such uses of these places are likely to be hazardous and to lead to accidents, frequently fatal.These hazards are known to men in the mining profession, and the danger to the public is realized by most of them. A solution to the problem has been sought at many mining meetings, and it is recognized that complete prevention of entry into old mine workings and surface mining areas is the ideal solution, but this, unfortunately, is not always practical; better education of the public, particularly children, should help to reduce the number of such accidents and will be effective in direct proportion to the extent and vividness of such education."

Carbonate minerals constitute a major fraction of the oil shale in Colorado&apos;s Green River Formation. Quantification of carbonate minerals is important for the characterization of oil shale, particularly because of their thermal activity in production of oil from shale. The carbonate minerals found in this oil shale are nahcolite (NaHCO3), dawsonite [NaA1(OH)2CO3], dolomite [(Mg1-xFx)Ca(CO3)2], calcite (CaCO3), and ferroan [(Mg1-xFex)CO3]. Although carbonate minerals can be removed by acid extraction from the balance of the oil shale, direct determination of carbonate minerals is complicated by the occurrence of the same cations in more than one mineral. A method for assigning the acid-soluble cations to the individual carbonate minerals was developed from two assumptions based on oil shale geochemistry: (1) Calcite and ferroan do not occur together, and (2) the ratio of iron and magnesium is the same in dolomite and ferroan. These assumptions were tested by the Bureau of Mines by applying the technique for assigning cations to 219 samples from the saline section of the formation. The reported carbonate mineral amounts were compared statistically with X-ray diffraction peak heights, verifying the cation assignment method.

The techniques are discussed briefly in the following sections. However, detailed information on the techniques is provided in the cited references. INTRODUCTION Coalbed methane, if not properly controlled in the underground mine environment, is a safety concern due to the potential risk for an explosion. This is a particular problem during longwall mining, where the high rate and volume of coal extraction can result in the release of large amounts of methane from the mined coalbed and other adjacent gas-bearing strata. The variability and potential hazards of these sometimes unexpectedly high gas flows provide the impetus to develop methods to predict methane emissions into the underground workplace. A forecast of the volume of gas that might be released during coal mining is helpful for designing ventilation systems and for implementing optimum methane drainage strategies to help mitigate expected gas emission problems. A complete assessment of the need for methane drainage prior to mine development generally requires both an empirical and a theoretical approach. If there are active mines in the general area with similar geologic conditions and coal characteristics, a review of gas problems in those mines provides an initial insight into the level of gas emissions to be expected at a new location. In addition, relatively simple methods exist to determine the in situ gas content (volume of gas per unit weight of coal) of the coalbeds in a particular mining area, as well as the gas-in-place (volume of gas in the coalbed(s) within a defined geographic area).

However, little information on primary crushing in available. The literature deals mainly with problems and practices in ore dressing, end in this field the engineer or investigations is concerned largely with the production of fine material rind the unlocking of minerals in the ore. Under such conditions close control of screen sizes of primary-crusher products is a secondary consideration and has received very little attention. The growth and development of tae nonmetallic industries have drawn more attention to primary crushing. Many of these industries are interested is the production of a minimum amount of fines and a maximum amount of a coarse Product that meets certain definite size specifications, a condition entirely different from that in the field of ore dressing. Longwall production levels are high, and there are several different sources of dust to contend with. If dust levels are high, the initial effort should be devoted to finding which source is the cause. Then, efforts to reduce dust can be concentrated where they will have the most impact. To control dust at longwalls, a large amount of ventilation air and spray water must be used. The water must be sprayed correctly so as not to blow dust into the walkway. Techniques to change local airflow patterns can be helpful. The shearer-clearer, as well as gob and wing curtains, are examples of such techniques. Gas occurs in coalbeds in an adsorbed and a free gas state. Adsorbed gas is stored in the micropore structure and its transport is governed by Fick&apos;s law. The free gas occurs in the fracture system and flows according to Darcy&apos;s law. These two modes of mass transport are interdependent. Production decline curves of coal-gas wells are of the constant percentage decline type and, thus, show no indications of flow characteristics peculiar to coal-gas reservoirs. The effectiveness of surface boreholes as a degasification scheme depends upon both good fracture permeability and a high fracture density. Conventional methods of reservoir engineering analysis are not applicable to coalbeds

Of three known compounds in the ternary system K20 - PbO - SiO2, one having the composition K2Pb4Si8021 crystallizes into a structure with asbestiform properties. This compound, whose silicon-oxygen ratio is between that of the layer silicates (for example, mica) and the double-chain amphiboles, crystallizes in the tetragonal system. It malts, apparently congruently, at 779° C. The fiberized product prepared from crystals is fluffy and closely resembles natural asbestos in appearance, but is more brittle and has less strength. However, potassium-lead silicate may be separated into fibers with a uniform diameter of 200-300 A.U., and the fibers show with the electron microscope the s criteria that have been interpreted as indicating a hollow tube structure in chrysotile asbestos. Since very few inorganic crystalline compounds have such a structure, the material has unusual scientific interest. Microcrystalline potassium-lead silicate was rapidly and completely formed when powdered glass of the same composition was heated to 650° - 700° C, but macrocrystals grew only slowly from the viscous massive glass. Maximum growth rate was 0.12mm. per hour at 700° C.

To improve a miner&apos;s chance of survival during an emergency by providing immediately avail-able breathable air and protection from toxic gases until a longer-duration breathing apparatus, stored nearby, can be reached. Approach: A belt-carried apparatus which can provide a closed-circuit atmosphere for ten minutes breathing has been developed under a Bureau of Mines contract. How It Works: Water vapor and carbon dioxide in the user&apos;s exhaled breath are removed, and oxygen is supplied, by chemical reactions. When the user exhales into the mouthpiece, water vapor in his breath reacts with potassium superoxide (KO2) stored In the canister to produce oxygen. The other product of this reaction (KOH) reacts with carbon dioxide and removes it from the air. The oxygen-enriched air then flows from the canister into two breathing bags. When user inhales through the mouth, that air is drawn out of the bags, makes a second pass through the chemical-containing canister, and flows into the mouthpiece tube. A nose clip is worn to seal off the nasal passages.
