Pitch from low-temperature carbonization of bituminous coal was hydrogenated at cracking conditions in a continuous bench-scale unit to produce low-molecular-weight oils and tar acids. The pitch contained 15.6 pct benzene-insoluble material, 4.0 pct hexane-soluble oil, and 80.4 pct asphaltene by weight. At 475° C, 7,500 psig, and 1.5 hours residence time, hydrogenation products, based on the weight of pitch, were about 36 pct oil boiling below 325° C, 24 pct hexane-soluble heavy oil, 17 pct asphaltene, 1 pct benzene insolubles, and 12 pct hydrocarbon gases. The yield of tar acids boiling below 250° C was 4.3 pct, and the yields of C6 to C8 paraffins, naphthenes, and aromatics were each less than 1.0 pct. The yield of tar acids was within the range of yields obtained by hydrogenation or high-temperature carbonization of bituminous coal (2 to 5 wt pct). Yields of oil boiling below 325° C increased with increased residence time or temperature. There was little or no effect of residence time on yields of alkali- soluble material which contained tar acids. Yields of hydro-carbon gases increased markedly with an increase in temperature from 475° to 500° C. Lowering the hydrogen pressure to 4,500 psig resulted in yields similar to those obtained at 7,500 psig.

This Bureau of Mines report presents a computer code that has been developed for describing and testing the statistical distribution of general continuous data sets. The statistical distributions used include the normal, lognormal, exponential, chi square, gamma, and uniform. Histograms for observed and expected values are plotted for each distribution. An example using geologic data obtained from a study of the geometric properties of natural fractures in oil shale rock illustrates the use of the computer program, GDIST.

This three volume final report summarizes the activities and conclusions of this contract. The objective of the contract was to develop noise control modifications on a retrofit basis, for auger miner coal-cutting systems. Manuals were prepared to assist mine shop personnel in retrofitting the auger miner with these noise controls. Final Report Volume I - Details all vibration and acoustical tests conducted in development of the noise controls. Final Report Volume II - Noise Control Modification Manual for the Jeffrey 100-L Auger Miner describes the various noise control modifications to the auger miner, along with fabrication procedures, cost and vendor information. Final Report Volume III - Noise Control Modification Manual for the Jeffrey 94-l Bridge Conveyor describes the various noise control modifications to the bridge conveyor, along with fabrication procedures, cost and vendor information.

"INTRODUCTION The Cline mine has been worked intermittently for copper and gold since 1895. Scheelite has recently been detected with the aid of a ""Mineralite"" on the old waste dumps of the mine. Four diamond-drill holes were drilled by the Bureau of Mines from August 13 to September 25, 1946. Results of this drilling showed the vein to pinch at depth and to carry no mineralization of economic importance.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Table 46 and figure 16 show the number of fires and fire injuries for metal/nonmetal mills by state during 1990-2001. Table 46 also shows the injury risk rates, employees' working hours, and lost workdays. In all, 77 fires occurred in 26 states. Thirty-seven of the fires caused 41 injuries and 1 fatality (including 5 fires and 3 injuries involving contractors). The yearly average was 6.4 fires and 3.4 injuries. Fifty-four fires with 26 injuries and 1 fatality occurred at metal mills; 23 fires with 15 injuries occurred at nonmetal mills. The Ewhr value was 845 x 106 hr (Irr = 0.01), and the LWD value was 6,681. Minnesota had the most fires (16 fires and 5 injuries), followed by Arizona (9 fires and 3 injuries), Wyoming (8 fires and 3 injuries), Nevada (7 fires, 4 injuries, and 1 fatality), and Texas (4 fires and 7 injuries). Of these states, Texas had the highest injury risk rate value (Irr = 0.033). Table 47, partly illustrated in figure 17, shows the number of fires, fire injuries, fire fatalities, risk rates, employees' working hours, and lost workdays by time period. The number of fires increased slightly during the second period, then decreased during the remaining periods. The number of fire injuries show a decrease during most of the periods (an increase is seen during the third period), accompanied by a decline in employees' working hours during most of the periods. The Irr values follow patterns similar to those shown by the injury values. Tables 48-53 show the number of fires by ignition source, method of detection and suppression, equipment involved, location, and burning material by time period. Figure 18 shows the major variables related to fires for 1990-2001. Table 54 shows the number of fire injuries per number of fires causing injuries and total fires by year, ignition source, equipment involved, and location.

Thermodynamic data for selected metal sulfates were critically evaluated and compiled as part of the Bureau of Mines program to provide a scientific base for use in developing new technology and predicting the feasibility of new processes. Values for Cp°, S°, H° - H°298, -(G° - H°298)/T, ?Hf°, ?Gf°, and log Kf as a function of temperature are given in tabular form. Thermodynamic data were compiled for VOSO4, Cr2(SO4)3, MnSO4, FeSO4, Fe2(SO4)3, CoSO4, NiSO4, Cu2SO4, CuSO4, CuO-CuSO4, ZnSO4, and ZnO-2ZnSO4, together with their stable hydrates.

The value of abrasive materials consumed in the United States increased 37% in value over that of 1983 to $439 million; of which, 58% was manufactured abrasives, 36% was industrial diamond (natural and synthetic), and 6% was natural abrasives. Production value of natural abrasives, which consist of crude tripoli, special silica stone, garnet, and emery, increased 4% Production of crude tripoli, a finely disintegrated chert, increased 12% in quantity and 8% in value. Shipments of processed tripoli increased only 3% in quantity but increased 16% in value, with large increases occurring in both major end-use categories. Production of garnet, an abundant iron-aluminum silicate, decreased slightly in quantity and value after posting continued increases in quantity and value since 1980. Available statistics on 1991 worldwide consumption of selected non fuel mineral commodities shown in table 12 indicate downturns for all but 3 of the 15 listed commodities. It should be stressed that in most instances, the consumption declines were primarily the result of lower levels of use in the former U.S.S.R. and the former centrally planned economy nations of Eastern Europe. However, several commodities suffered use cutbacks in market economy countries. In the case of the nonferrous metals covered In the table, the differences in performance between market economy countries and the former centrally planned economy states are immediately evident from the table itself. Among these important commodities, refined lead, primary magnesium, and refined tin registered downturns for market economy countries as well as among the centrally planned economy countries. Also notably, cadmium use showed no significant change from 1990 levels in either group of countries. Global consumption of iron ore fell by 3.4 % or about 31 million tons, and this was a greater decline than that logged for production of marketable iron ore and related products, which was down by only 3.0% or almost 28.2 million tons. Thus, it would seem that for another year there was a net addition to stocks. The 1991 drop in iron and steel scrap use was about 5.5 % or about 18 million tons, on the percentage basis somewhat greater than the 4.8% or 36.9 million ton drop in global steel production. Although consumption of iron ore and iron and steel scrap are not broken down by region in table 12, it seems almost assured that the pattern of 1990 continued into 1991: drops in use in the former U.S.S.R. and Eastern Europe were the overwhelmingly dominant declines and accounted for much, although not all, of the global decline, whereas among market economy countries as a group, there were upturns for both materials. On a global basis, it would appear that the slight shift in the ratio of pig iron to scrap in steel furnace charges noted in 1990 continued into 1991, this shift being toward a slightly larger proportion of pig iron with a corresponding decline in the share accounted for by scrap.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated two drill-hole probes for the delineation of Missouri lead ores. The battery-powered, portable instruments, weighing less than 30 pounds, were designed for logging holes of 1.8 inches in diameter or larger. These probes have dual scintillation detectors, balanced filters with a pass band for lead Ka radiation, and a cobalt-57 source of radiation. The results of field tests in Missouri confirm laboratory tests indicating that probe response can be correlated to lead ore grade using counting times of 10 seconds or less at any selected depth in the hole.

In this Bureau of Mines study, portions of four acidproof bricks (two red shale and two fireclay) were exposed to 20 wt pct RCI at 900 C for periods of 30 days. Three different techniques were selected to deter-mine volume expansion of these materials after exposure. Linear expansions ranging from about 0.02 to 0.12 pct were noted from Ta pin and dilatometer measurements. The use of strain gages to measure expansions was not successful. The red shale and fireclay brick with the lowest apparent porosities had the lowest expansions. Expansion data obtained by direct measurement of samples exposed for 30-day periods or by dilatometric measurement of autoclaved samples ex-posed for 2 h were comparable. This suggests the use of an accelerated autoclave exposure procedure for determining volume expansion effects of ceramic materials in acid environments.

The final 26 tables of this chapter, tables 14-39, extend and expand the statistical series on production that was started in the 1963 edition of the "Area Reports: International" volume of the "Minerals Yearbook" and that was subsequently updated and expanded in the 1965 and 1967-88 editions. In this year's edition, for the first time, a column has been added to each of these tables providing a 5 year average for 1985-89, inclusive. This should provide a clearer picture more rapidly of the role of each major producer over the 5-year period. The listing order of major producers, however, continues to be, as in past years, in descending order of rank in the year of review, 1989. With the inclusion of silver and uranium oxide in the 1988 edition of this chapter, this group of tables now includes each of the crude minerals that ranked from 1st to 19th in 1983 in terms of value of their output (as well as four others of lesser rank). These 23 crude mineral commodities accounted for 93% of the estimated value of world crude mineral of world crude mineral production in 1983. In addition, world output of five key down-stream products-aluminum, steel, cement, nitrogen in ammonia, and refined oil are included because of their significance as products.

The high-purity thorium metal was prepared by the Bureau of Mines from electrolytically produced thorium alloys. The thorium-chromium and thorium-manganese alloys were separated into the component elements by vacuum distillation. Chromium and manganese impurities remaining in the thorium metal after distillation at 1,850° C were <0.005 weight-percent. Removal of volatile impurities such as aluminum, calcium, magnesium, and lead was also accomplished.

THE BITUMINOUS coal and lignite industry increased substantially in 1962, compared with the 1961 figures. The major items of production, consumption, exports, and productivity increased. However, certain key items declined. The steady upward trend in mechanization failed to materialize for the third year; the percentage of total tonnage mechanically loaded remained the same as in the 2 previous years; and the tonnage mechanically cleaned was smaller than in the previous year. The percentage of total production mined by stripping and by augers increased slightly. Most significant was the continued decline in average value and employment. Production.-The output of bituminous coal and lignite in the United States in 1962-422 million tons-was 5 percent greater than the 403 million tons produced in 1961. Production was greater in 1962, owing largely to expanded consumption by the electric utilities and to more exports.

Bureau of Mines studies show than an electronic counter can be used for determining just concentrations from midget impinger samples collected in bituminous coal mines. A sample correlation coefficient of 0.91 for data obtained using the electronic counter and the Bureau of Mines microprojector procedures indicates a significant linear relationship between the methods. The electronic counter provides better counting precision and reduces analytical time.

The results of the first experimental study by the Bureau of Mines on the explosive properties of metal powders were published in 1945. Since that time the explosibility of numerous other industrial dusts and powders has been investigated. Part of this information has been published, but most of the data has not been released to date. This paper summarizes the results of experiments on 22 samples of titanium, zirconium, thorium, uranium, and hydrides of these metals. The major part of the investigation was made under cooperative agreement with the Atomic Energy Commission.

This report presents the results of a research and development program in recovering waste-rolling oils conducted by the Bethlehem Steel Co., before 1954 at its Sparrows Point plant, Sparrow Point, Md., with the cooperation of the Bureau of Mines, U. S. Department of the Interior, College Park, Md. The objective of the program was twofold: First, to recover oil for reuse in the plant; and second, to stop pollution, by oil, of the stream and harbor areas in the immediate vicinity of the plant. The sequence of the investigations was laboratory and pilot plant studies on sedimentation, simple aeration, and flotation for the separation of oil and water; and construction of a production unit using standard flotation equipment. This work was only preliminary for the Bethlehem Steel Co. and it has continued research on this problem. Recent progress indicates that new, improved processes will soon replace the flotation units described in this report. The first efforts to separate oil and water by simple sedimentation were unsuccessful. To establish the cause of this failure, microscope examinations and measurements were made on cold-reduction rolling mill cooling-water effluents containing oil in suspension. It was discovered that an average oil globule, held in suspension, was only 0.001 inch in diameter and would not coagulate with other globules for normal sedimentation at room temperature. The next step in the sequence of studies was to coagulate the oil suspension by simple aeration with air under slight pressure. The aeration methods studied were effective in removing up to 68 percent of the total oil but were approaching flotation in principle. The final investigation of the series was flotation of the oil in conventional laboratory-size flotation cells. The small-bubble method, without reagents, floated up to 89 percent of the total oil held in suspension and was the process selected for pilot-plant development.

The objective of this study was two-fold: 1. To perform a world literature search pertinent to the analysis, selection and design of hoisting systems and their components and to codify the search into a literature compendium. The search resulted in a technical data file of over 1500 hard copy items. The compendium index was also suitable for establishing a comprehensive computer-loaded data base on the subject. 2. To develop a comprehensive system of guidelines to cover salient aspects of analysis, selection and design of electrical, mechanical and structural components of a hoisting system with a view to establish parameters for maximum safety and efficiency of operation, installation and revision of the system. 3. Major mechanical components in the hoist and mechanical drive train are considered. Design and specification criteria based on American standards and practices are developed as they apply to typical mine hoist arrangements.

The Muir Inlet or Nunatak molybdenum deposits arc in the Glacier Bay district, Muir Inlet, miles northwest of Juneau. The deposits were examined by Bureau of Mines engineers, and the area was mapped by a field party of the Federal Geological Survey during the summer of 1942. 5/ The following year the Bureau of Mines began developing the deposits. A total of 217 channel samples were taken, and 2 diamond drill holes totaling 256 feet wore drilled. The samples were sent to the&apos; Bureau&apos;s laboratories at Rolla, Mo. for beneficiation.

A commercially available Halon 1301 extinguisher has been evaluated as part of an explosion-suppression system for use in coal mines. Studies were made both of the dispersion pattern of the Halon 1301 at an initial pressure of 280 psig, and of the efficacy of this suppressant against 9.5 percent methane-air flames. These flames were quenched successfully only when the suppressant was applied before the fireball diameter exceeded 18 inches.
