High Pressure Grinding Roll (HPGR) as an efficient grinding technology plays a major role in mineral processing plants. Investigating the effects of this technology on different parts of mineral processing circuits reveals this technology’s capability. In this paper, HPGR grinding effects on an iron ore beneficiation circuit, in comparison with conventional crushing systems were studied. A representative feed sample was taken from an iron ore beneficiation plant, then crushed to minus 6 mm in a laboratory by two methods: HPGR and cone crusher, and finally a concentrate plant circuit was simulated. Plant simulation was performed by doing laboratory tests consisting of grinding, magnetic separation, flotation and filtration on HPGR and cone crusher products, respectively. According to comminution tests results, in particle sizes smaller than 6 mm, a cone crusher product is coarser than an HPGR product. Also, the Bond ball mill work index of the HPGR product was 10% less than the crusher product. Therefore, based on the Bond formula in applying HPGR, ball mill power consumption decreased by 12%. After ball milling to minus 100 microns, magnetic separation tests results showed that the recovery of the cone crusher circuit output was 90.8% and the product Fe grade was 66.4%. For the HPGR circuit these figures were 87.6% and 67.3%, respectively. Therefore, by using an HPGR, a higher Fe grade of the final concentrate was achieved. A flotation test was then performed on the magnetic separation concentrate, where the results showed that the crusher circuit recovery and the sulfur grade of the product were 96.5% and 0.192%, respectively; whereas the HPGR circuit recovery was 97.2% with a sulfur content of 0.185%. Findings revealed that flotation performance in the HPGR circuit was more efficient than the crusher circuit. Vacuum filtration tests on concentrate produced through the HPGR circuit resulted in a moisture content of 12% that was 2% higher than the crusher circuit’s concentrate in the same condition. The objective of this study is to improve the shrinking core model for particles with a particle size distribution and clarify the activation mechanism of rare earth elements dissolution by mechanochemical activation. To achieve this objective, the method, called the doubly integrated micromodel, was applied for a shrinking core model in this study. This method consists of integrating the batch leaching rate of a single particle over the distribution of both feed particle size and reactor residence time to arrive at the fraction unleached. The usefulness of the shrinking core model improved by doubly integrated micromodel was confirmed by comparing it with a shrinking core model. To apply the shrinking core model improved by doubly integrated micromodel to rare earth elements dissolution from weathered residual rare earth ores by mechanochemical activation, leaching experiments were performed for grinding samples by planetary ball milling. The reaction equation of mechanochemical reaction by planetary ball milling for weathered residual rare earth ores was investigated by x-ray absorption fine structure analysis. As a result of a kinetics study, the rate-determining process of leaching changed from reaction to diffusion reaction control by planetary ball milling. Based on these results, it was revealed that the main mechanism of activated rare earth elements dissolution from weathered residual rare earth ores was a mechanochemical reaction by planetary ball milling. This symposium, being held at The President Hotel, Johannesburg on 9th-11th September, 1969, is being jointly sponsored by The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, The South African Corrosion Council and the Southern Africa Stainless Steel Development Association, and supported by the C.S.I.R. The three days of technical sessions, at which 350 delegates are expected, will include introductory films on the properties and uses of stainless steels, papers on corrosion problems and prevention, design and economics, welding and applications in industries of particular importance to South Africa. The programme includes four overseas guest speakers who are acknowledged leaders in their respective fields. Open pit slope design has conventionally been effected as a bottom up function utilising available geotechnical information. This results in a decision criterion based on Probability of Failure and Factor of Safety with a risk assessment being carried out on the proposed design slopes. The design approach recommended reverses the process using fault event tree decision methodology. The consequences of this approach are that acceptable risk criteria have to be determined by mine owners. Slopes are then designed by the technical staff to achieve these corporate goals. Benefits that arise from the process are that the owners take a proactive decision on the risk benefit relationship allowing the technical staff to optimise the geotechnical exploration programme and design.

South Africa holds approximately three-quarters of the world?s viable chromite ore resources and dominates the global production of ferrochrome. Albeit completely unintended, small amounts of Cr(VI) are formed during ferrochrome production. Certain Cr(VI)species are regarded as carcinogenic, hence making the treatment of some ferrochrome waste materials necessary. In this paper, the Cr(VI) treatment strategies currently employed by the South African ferrochrome producers are investigated by means of a literature review and a questionnaire survey. From the discussion, it is evident that various treatment strategies are available to deal with Cr(VI)-containing waste in the ferrochrome industry. However, by far the most commonly applied treatment strategy remains the aqueous reduction of Cr(VI) with ferrous iron. The advantages and the correct application of this strategy, together with the disadvantages and pitfalls, are argued. Innovative improvements on historic practices are also discussed

The latest Draft MPRRB was released for public comment in October 2006. The main purpose of the Bill is to collect royalties at mines developed in terms of new-order mineral rights granted through the MPRDA process. The transition phase stipulated in the MPRDA will be completed by 1 May 2009, on which date mineral royalties will become payable to the state. The royalty rates stated in the MPRRB differ from mineral to mineral and also depend on the degree of refinement. Gold is the subject of this paper, where the royalty rate ranges from 1.5% (for refined gold) to 3% (for unrefined gold) of sales revenue. This royalty is payable regardless of profit, with a maximum 75% relief for loss-making mines. The purpose of this paper is to establish whether or not it would be necessary for gold mines to adjust their mineral reserve statements as a result of this Bill. The methodology is to add the royalty costs stipulated in the MPRRB to the actual quarterly information for the past ten years as reported by the gold-mine members of the COM. The rationale is to investigate the impact this Bill (in its current form) would have had on gold reserves that must be left unmined in the ground because of a higher pay limit. The results of the study point to a significant impact on reserves available for mining with the subsequent shortening of mine lives and retrenchment of workers. Had the MPRRB been effective for the 10 years prior to 1996, it would have resulted in 46 tonnes of gold being sterilised. Stated alternatively, 30 700 workers at COM gold mines alone would have lost their livelihoods.

Raise-boring experiences in the gold mines of the Anglo American Corporation Group by J. W. Wilson M.Sc., M.I.M.M., F.S.A.I.M.M., M.A.I.M.E. and P. C. Graham M.Sc. (Eng.) Gold mining is being carried out at ever-increasing depths in South Africa. For reasons of safety and human comfort, it is becoming imperative for raises to be developed by means other than conventional drilling and blasting. Raise-boring is an attractive alternative method. Initial raise-boring experiences in South African gold mines showed disappointingly high costs due to the abrasivity and difficulty of drilling Witwatersrand quartzites. Consequently, a research and development project was instigated with the objective of making raise-boring an economically viable technique in hard abrasive rock. A Robbins 61R raise-borer was made available to the Research and Development team and a number of raises have been drilled. During these trials two advances in cutter design were tested. This paper presents the results obtained, including drilling costs, and provides details of the equipment used.

Rheological measurements on pulps from South African gold mines by G. s. HANSFORD, Ph.D. (Pennsylvania), M.Sc. (Cape Town), C. D. LEVY, B.Sc. (Eng.), and J. W. DE KOCK, Ph.D. (Cantab.), B.Sc. (A.I.C.) (Visitors) A method is described for the determination of the rheological parameters of a fast-settling slurry with conventional viscometric measuring equipment. The effect of concentration, temperature, and pH on these parameters is investigated. The results agree with those obtained by previous workers using different viscometers, but this method allows a more detailed characterization of all the properties. From a literature survey, two semi-empirical equations were found that allow the effect of concentration, temperature, or pH on the rheological parameters to be correlated.

Gold bearing deposits in the Witwatersrand consist predominantly of narrow tabular conglomerates with quartzite host rock. Extensive mining of these deposits at depth results in significant stresses being induced in the periphery of the tabular excavations. Where remnant pillars are created excessive stresses have resulted in the dynamic failure of the abutments. At the Hartebeestfontein Mine four brittle shear zones have recently been exposed and investigated. For most part, they represent abutment failure into the weaker hangingwall strata, striking parallel to the abutment, dipping towards the stope, with a sense of displacement consistent with closure of the stope from above. These shear zones are similar to those described in various publications by Ortlepp2: they are essentially brittle shear zones characterised by the presence of very finely comminuted ‘rock flour’ on an obviously freshly sheared surface. The angle between the shear zone wall and extension fractures indicate the sense of shear and the intersection of the extension fractures with the shear zone walls define a strong lineation normal to the direction of slip. It is suggested that these structures are referred to as ‘mining induced dynamic brittle shears’. Une exploitation poussée de ces gisements en profondeur a pour résultat l’apparition d’importantes contraintes induites à la périphérie des excavations tabulaires. Là où des piliers restants sont créés, des contraintes excessives ont eu pour résultat une rupture dynamique des appuis. Dans la Mine d’Hartebeestfontein, quatre zones fragiles de cisaillement ont été récemment exposées et étudiées. Dans la plupart des cas, elles représentent une rupture des appuis dans les strates moins solides de la paroi suspendue, orientée parallèlement à l’appui, inclinée en direction du chantier d’abattage avec une direction de mouvement consistante avec l’affaissement du toit de la galerie d’abattage. Ces zones de cisaillement sont similaires à celles décrites par Ortlepp2 dans diverses publications: Ce sont essentiellement des zones cisaillement fragiles caractérisées par la présence de « farine de roche » très finement réduite sur une surface évidemment fraîchement cisaillée. L’angle entre la paroi de la zone de cisaillement et les fractures de tension indiquent le sens du cisaillement et l’intersection des fractures de tension avec les parois de la zone de cisaillement définit une forte délinéation perpendiculaire à la direction du glissement. Il est suggéré que l’on se réfère à de telles structures comme des « cisaillements dynamiques fragiles induits par l‘exploitation ». Goldablagerungen im Witwatersrand bestehen überwiegend aus schmalen tabularen Konglomeraten mit Quarzitwirtgestein. Der umfangreiche Abbau dieser Ablagerungen in der Tiefe resultiert in signifikanten Drücken, die auf die Peripherie der tabularen Aushöhlungen wirken. Wo Restpfeiler hergestellt wurden, resultierten exzessive Drücke im dynamischen Versagen der Auflager. In der Hartebeestfontein Grube wurden kürzlich vier spröde Scherzonen freigelegt und untersucht. Zum größten Teil representieren sie Auflagerversagen im Stratum der schwächeren Stollenfirste, parallel zum Auflager verlaufend, in Richtung Abbaustelle abfallend, mit einem gewissen Grad an Verschiebung konsistent mit der Schliessung der Strosse von oben. Diese Scherzonen sind jenen ähnlich, die in den verschiedenen Publikationen von Ortlepp2 beschrieben werden: sie sind im Wesentlichen spröde Scherzonen, charakterisiert durch das Vorhandensein des sehr fein pulverisierten „Gesteinsmehls“ auf einer offensichtlich frisch abgescherten Oberfläche. Der Winkel zwischen der Scherzonenwand und den Bruchverlängerungen deutet die Richtung der Scherung an und die Kreuzung der Bruchverlängerungen mit der Abscherzone grenzt sich gegen eine starke Lineation normal zur Richtung der Lehne ab. Es wird vorgeschlagen, daß diese Strukturen als `vom Abbau verursachte dynamisch spröde Scherungen’ bezeichnet werden.

1. Book review • World mineral statistics 1974 to 1978. Production: Exports: Imports. London, H.M.S.O., Institute of Geological Sciences, 1980. (Reviewer: R. P. King) This edition is the third in a regular series prepared by the Institute of Geological Sciences. It is a useful compilation of statistics on the production, export, and import of fifty-eight different mineral commodities. Each mineral is listed by country, and a table is provided for the annual production, the annual imports, and the annual exports for each commodity included. However, some commodities are treated in considerably more detail; for example, aluminium and bauxite have tables under the following headings: Production of Bauxite, Production of Alumina, Production of Primary Aluminium, Exports of Bauxite, Alumina and Aluminium, Imports of Bauxite, Alumina and Aluminium. The information presented is the latest official information available from primary sources; the compilers have not relied on data from secondary compilations. This publication will be of considerable assistance to all who are concerned with the trading of mineral commodities and their production.

(Visitor) T his paper highlights the changes that are taking place at De Beers Consolidated Mines Limited in mining methods, mechanization, and employment practices. De Beers has four underground mines in Kimberley itself (Dutoitspan, Bultfontein, De Beers, and Wesselton), and two open-cast mines outside Kimberley (Finsch and Koffiefontein). Emphasis is placed on the new method envisaged for Koffiefontein when it becomes an underground mine. The paper also includes notes on chemical drilling and on winding practices.

A 36-year-old A-S-H pump, manufactured to designs dating back to 1936, was recently presented to the Gold Mine Museum by Envirotech. The pump, a B-frame three-piece rubber-lined Hydroseal unit, was supplied by Envirotech's predecessor company, Denver Machinery, and was installed by South Roodepoort Main Reef Areas Limited on 22nd March, 1948. Metals, materials, manufacturing The 37th Annual Conference of the Australasian Institute of Metals will be held in Ballarat (Australia) from 13th to 17th May, 1985. 1985is the Sesquicentennial year of Victoria, and for the first time the historic City of Ballarat has been chosen as the venue for an Australasian Institute of Metals congress. Steel rolling Conferences on steel rolling, sponsored by The Iron and Steel Institute of Japan (ISH), and supported by iron and steel institutes in many countries of the world, have been held since 1980. The first conference was held in Tokyo in 1980, sponsored by The Iron and Steel Institute of Japan.

ANNUAL REPORT OF THE COUNCIL AND ACCOUNTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30th JUNE, 1969 The President: "Ladies and gentlemen, It is with much pleasure that I present to you the Annual Report and Accounts for the year ended 30th June, 1969. These have been laid on the chairs and before calling for their adoption I would like to make a few comments. The Accounts show an excess of expenditure over income of R2,124 and our Honorary Treasurer, Mr D. G. Maxwell, will in due course comment on this. The main difficulty has again been the cost of the Journal and I think most of you are aware of the changes that we propose to make. I shall be sorry to see the last of our old format but then I have always had rather a con¬servative outlook.

This Spotlight gives a brief summary of the proposed 1991 tax amendments of relevance to mines and mining houses. It should be read together with the author's article South African mining tax in the 1990's', which appeared in the August 1990 issue of this Journal. A number of tax amendments of relevance to the mining industry were proposed by the Minister of Finance in his March 1991 budget speech. In addition, certain other measures that may be implemented were set out in the budget review document released at the same time. A word of caution is necessary: these measures will become law only if and when they are enacted in the appropriate legislation. When this legislation is tabled in June, it may not contain all of the measures discussed below, some of the measures may appear in modified form, and other measures not discussed at the time of the budget may well appear. Unless otherwise stated, the 1991 tax amendments will affect companies with years of assessment ending in the twelve-month period to 31st March, 1992.
