The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy mourns the passing of one of its most distinguished sons. Professor J. de V. Lambrechts died at Franschoek on 30th January, 1988, at the age of 76 years after a long illness. Mintek Application Reports A new series of Mintek reports made its appearance in 1987. These are Application Reports, which present an overall perspective of each of Mintek's technical thrusts to ensure that the existing expertise can continue to be readily accessed. The successful development of an industrial process for the recovery of platinum-group metals from the UG-2 Reef. Minutes of meeting held at the Moth Hall, Witbank on 13th November, 1969. There were present eleven members: Mr J. Meintjes (in the chair); Messrs I. E. van Aswegen, O. T. Wright, A. W. L. Brereton, A. Bain, J. Brook, P. J. Beukes, C. H. Coxon, B. F. v.d. Merwe, A. C. Hofmeyer, G. E. Carlyon. Six Associate Members: Messrs E. J. Jackson, J. N. H. Pritchard, R. E. Powell, W. Weber, R. Smith, B. T. Hosking. One Student Member Mr M. J. de Beer. Seven visitors. The Chairman reminded members of the intended visit to Barberton. Dr Stander, Director of the National Institute for Water Research, gave an interesting talk, illustrated with slides and a short film, on the conservation and reclamation of water in South Africa. After question time, Mr Hector, Witbank Town Engineer (visitor) thanked Dr Stander. The meeting closed at 7.10 p.m.

The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy arranged a well-attended Colloquium on Management Techniques in the Mining and Metallurgical Industries at the C SIR Conference Centre from 13th to 15th June, 1988.

PRESENT Minutes of the Annual General Meeting, held on Friday the 20th August, 1971, at 7.45 p.m. in the Boulevard Hotel, Witbank. Mr J. Meintjies in the Chair, 15 Fellows, 7 Members, 2 Associate Members and 10 Visitors. Mr Meintjies extended a welcome to all the members and their wives, and the many visitors and their wives. A special welcome to Mr Robinson the outgoing President of the Institute and Prof. Howat the President Elect and Mrs Howat. The minutes were read and adopted. The Chairman read his Report for the past year and also the Financial Statement. Mr E. Jackson proposed the acceptance of the Financial Statement and Mr Winship seconded it. Mr Meintjies thanked Mr Vic Robinson for all the help he had given throughout the past year. He also thanked the outgoing Committee for their support, and the Secretary for arranging the function. Mr Meintjies congratulated Mr Alex Bain on his election as Chairman and asked him to continue with the meeting. Mr Bain thanked Mr Meintjies for the good work which he had done in the past year and then announced the names of the Committee for the ensuing year. A. Bain Chairman G. Carlyon Vice Chairman J. The meeting closed at 8.10 p.m. Dinner was served and after coffee Mr Vic Robinson gave a most amusing and informative review of the Institute's activities. Mr Bain thanked Mr Robinson for his address and Prof and Mrs Howat and Mr Robinson for coming down to Wit bank for our Annual General Meeting.

A very successful banquet was held in the Ballroom of the Carlton Hotel on 7th March, 1986. The Institute thanks the Organizing Committee and the sponsors (listed on this page), without whose generous support the banquet would not have been possible.

The SAG Milling Seminar, which was held at Murdoch University in Perth on 30th November and 1st December, 1989, was a very successful technical seminar. Organizer Dr Norm Stockton reported a total attendance of 130, which was higher than the 70 expected: 20 delegates came from the eastern States and the remainder were from Western Australia.

The youngest technical programme committee of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy- that on Physical Metallurgy - held its second colloquium on 18th September, 1984. The topic of 'Corrosion of Piping and Tubing in the Mining Industry' was very appropriate since the date had been chosen to coincide with that of the Electra Mining Exhibition.

The Annual General Meeting of the Orange Free State Branch was held on Wednesday evening, 30th July, 1986, in the VIP Lounge of the Freegold North Region Canteen. The meeting was well attended, a total of 73 members, guests, and visitors being present. It was extremely pleasing to have such a large number of lady visitors present.

The author mentions some of the problems he has encountered, together with their solutions. These include the stoping of isolated pillars, the reduction of the size of shaft pillars, the stoping of a new horizon above or below a horizon that has already been stoped out, and the mining of thick bands of reef left behind in the footwall or hanging wall.

The Annual General Meeting of the Branch was held in the Witbank Golf Club on Thursday, 28th August, 1969 at 5.00 p.m. Mr C. G. Sowry (Chairman) was in the Chair. There were also present: Ten Members: Messrs J. Meintjes (Vice-Chairman), J. E. van Aswegen, A. C. Hofmeyr, I. Botha, B. F. v. d. Merwe, C. H. Coxon, R. Canny, R. C. J. Goode, A. Bain, G. E. Carlyon. Six Associate Members: Messrs B. T. Hosking, R. E. Powell, W. Weber, T. Bulloch, E. J. Jackson, P. J. Muller. Fourteen Visitors. Total Present: 31. The Chairman declared the meeting open and extended a welcome to all visitors including Mr R. C. J. Goode, President of the Institute. MINUTES OF PREVIOUS GENERAL MEETING The Minutes of the General Meeting held on the 26th June, 1969, were read and adopted. CHAIRMAN'S REPORT The Chairman presented a report outlining the activities of the Branch during the past year. Membership of the local Branch had increased from 80 to 99 during the year. DECLARATIONOF OFFICEBEARERS The Chairman announced that owing to his transfer out of the Witbank area, he was unable to accept the nomination as Chairman for a further year of office. The outgoing committee had elected Mr J. Meintjes Chairman and Mr A. Bain Vice-Chairman for the ensuing year. Mr J. Meintjes then took the chair. Mr J. Meintjes thanked Mr C. G. Sowry for his successful steering of the Branch during its period of inauguration. ELECTION OF COMMITTEE MEMBERS The Chairman then read the Scrutineers' Report and declared the following eight members elected as Committee Members for the 1969-1970 year: Messrs I. Botha, A. W. Brereton, G. E. Carlyon, B. T. Hosking, E. J. Jackson, B. D. McNeice, P. J. Muller, B. F. van der Merwe. TALK The Chairman then called upon Mr A. Bain to present his talk and film show on 'Impressions of the mining and metallurgy congress tour to Australasia'. CLOSURE After thanking the speaker for an interesting talk, the Chairman declared the Meeting closed at 8.40 p.m.
