Computer Integrated Mining (CIMG) is a process of using computer networks to transform islands of enabling technologies into a highly interconnected mining system. CIMG involves the integration of advanced technologies at various levels in the mine business to achieve higher flexibility, better quality of processes and control, and improved profitability. Justifying the benefits of CIMG are difficult as many of the advantages are derived from improved flexibility, quality, and control. Justification is based on the evaluation of the benefits to be gained, compared to the required capital investment. Management tools used in mining are currently inadequate in assessing the value of advanced technology whose benefits are primarily qualitative. A key aspect of successful implementation is management acceptance, which has to be won through the capability to justify the technology's financial costs and the true value of all of its benefits. The manufacturing industry faced similar justification difficulties when adopting advanced technology in factories. A significant amount of funding and research was invested into developing management strategies and approaches to justification. Many of the problems that faced the transformation of the manufacturing industry in the late eighties and early nineties are now facing mining. The solutions derived for manufacturing may help mining in its transition to an increased reliance on integration technology. Reviewing the industrial history of computer integrated manufacturing identifies several tools and strategic frameworks that can be adapted for mining. Pipe pigging is a technique for the in situ (field) coating application, to create a seamless internal anti-corrosive lining of long pipelines. The technology originated in the cleaning of pipes, and these proven cleaning methods continue to be used today. Firstly mechanical cleaning of the pipeline is performed, using wire brush, razor back, course stud and fine wire pigs, then foam pigs, or criss cross pigs, and urethane blade scrapers to remove loose debris, wax, residual hydrocarbons and corrosion products from the pipeline. Part of the proprietary techniques and expertise is to ensure that these cleaning pigs do not get stuck Next chemical cleaning of the pipeline is performed, using repeated pig runs with detergents, solvents, acid etching, corrosion inhibitors, consecutively batched between two pigs, to ensure a clean, dry metal finish to a visual cleanliness standard of ISO SA2½. These in situ techniques were developed, 40 years ago to apply internal corrosion protection to pipes using a thin layer of epoxy based paint (50 to 100 micron). Until recently these old techniques were never improved upon. Although many thousands of kilometres of pipes were successfully coated with these thin film epoxy based paints and old application techniques, these thin paint films had problems in weld coverage, and were also unable to fill pits caused by pitting corrosion, and unable to replace metal loss caused by channel erosion. New coating material developments, revised application methods and modified pigging equipment have now made it possible to apply thick film coatings as corrosion barriers to the internals of pipes in the field, using these pigging techniques. The thick coating films can be up to 1 mm (40 mils) thick in a single coating run over long distances. The new thick film coating materials and application techniques are similar to continuous screeding, creating a far more robust seamless internal pipe lining when compared to the old technology of thin film paints. With thick film polymers the option now exists to create a structural GRP pipe within a pipe, be it steel or cementicious. It has been preferable, even necessary, to move away from the traditional epoxy paints and coatings. It was found difficult or impossible to use epoxy materials for these pipe coating applications due to the requirement for achieving a suitable viscosity with adequate hold up. In order to reduce epoxy viscosity a solvent or reactive diluent is required. This inevitably lead to solvent entrapment and poor cure characteristics in cold climates. Further mud cracking in over thick areas, the inability to extend or reduce pot life, poor control of cure time and limited resistance to aggressive or chemical environments made solvent based epoxy resins a poor choice.

Following the Coalbrook disaster in 1960, research into coal pillar strength resulted in the adoption of the concept of a safety factor for the design of stable pillars in South African coal mining. At the time when the original statistical analysis was performed by Salamon and Munro in the early 1960s, 27 cases of failed pillar workings were considered suitable for inclusion in the database of failed pillars. Pillar failure did not stop after the introduction of the safety factor formula by Salamon and Munro (1967). In the ensuing years, pillars that were created before the application of the formula deteriorated and later failed, as did ones that were created after the introduction of the formula. This means that over time, the database of failed pillar cases increased in size, allowing ever more reliable analyses to be performed. The number of failed cases in the database had grown from the original 27 in the 1960s to 86 by 2011. All the failed cases are contained in the updated database. The database of stable pillars, which is also used in the derivation of strength formulae, has now been extended from 125 to 337 cases. The new database of intact pillar cases is more complete as it bridges the time gap between the Salamon and Munro (1967) and the Van der Merwe (2006) databases. The original requirements for inclusion into the database were satisfied in the compilation of this latest collection. The characteristics of the original database of intact pillars did not change in a meaningful way. The mining depth and pillar dimensions of the new database are largely as they were in the original database. Time-related trends with regard to pillar dimensions and depth of mining could not be found, indicating that the geometrical parameters of coal mining in South Africa have not changed meaningfully in approximately a century of mining. The characteristics of cases in the updated database of failed pillars does not differ substantially from the one published by Van der Merwe (2006). The same difference between that database and the original Salamon and Munro database, namely that the average safety factor of the failed cases had increased dramatically, from 1.0 to 1.5, is still apparent. This may be due to the inclusion of more failures from specific areas that exhibit a disproportionate number of failures at higher safety factors. These areas are the Vaal Basin, Klip River, and Free State coalfields. The new database confirms yet again that there is no correlation between the safety factors of failed pillars and their time of failure. The safety factor on its own is thus not a reliable predictor of longterm stability of pillars. Keywords coal pillar, stable pillar cases, pillar collapse, pillar data base.

A single aggregate mix design was developed based on a slag/Portland binder blend and crusher sand. The primary design criterion, after performance, was the fluidity of the shotcrete and concrete product to ensure compatibility with existing manufacturing and shotcrete equipment as well as the pipeline transport system Cullinan Diamond Mine was investigating. Initial work had determined an optimum slag/Portland to aggregate ratio while retaining a water to slag/Portland binder ratio of approximately 0.4 to maintain the flowability of the product. A super-plasticizer was used to further increase the flowability of the product as opposed to increasing the water content. Finally a polypropylene reinforcement fibre was included in the wet shotcrete product to improve the energy absorption characteristics of the shotcrete. Previous work on the strength development of the slag/Portland based shotcretes and concretes suggests that strength class based on the EN 206 specification is C40/50 while the toughness classification based on the EFNARC plate test is c, or greater than 1000 joules1. Typically, Cullinan Diamond Mine wanted a shotcrete with a uniaxial compressive cube strength of 45 MPa and an energy absorption, based on the EFNARC plate test, in excess of 700 joules. This is an EN 206 strength class of C36/45 requiring a uniaxial compressive core strength of 30.5 MPa and a toughness classification of b1. In addition to the shotcrete development, Cullinan Diamond Mine required concrete products with a compressive strength range of between 25 and 60 Mpa for differing construction operations underground to be manufactured from the same mix design and raw materials as for the shotcrete. Finally, Cullinan Diamond Mine carries out extensive dry shotcrete operations and an investigation into the possibility of using the single aggregate mix design for dry shotcreting was also entered into. This paper presents data that indicates that, under the terms of reference, a wet and dry shotcrete and concrete product appears to be possible from a single aggregate less than 6.7 mm in size, and that a slag/Portland binder is suitable for use as the hydraulic binder in all the products, and that the necessary performance parameters of strength and energy absorption can be achieved.

A well known rock mass classification system has been altered slightly to address the issues found under remnant mining conditions. By detail study of the expected fracture patterns and local geology, the rock mass is classified to indicate the condition of the hanging wall prior to mining. The risk level of each mining step is evaluated by calculating input parameters for computer simulations from the actual rock mass condition. Seismic activity is catered for by the understanding that large event rates and large magnitude events reduce the quality of the local rock mass and that the rock mass stiffness should be adapted accordingly. A case study is presented to test parts of the protocol. Une étude détaillée des diagrammes de fragmentation et de la géologie locale permet de classer la masse rocheuse pour indiquer la condition du toit avant l’extraction. Le niveau de risque de chaque étape minière est évalué en calculant les paramètres d’entrée pour simulation par ordinateur à partir de la condition réelle de la masse rocheuse. L’activité sismique est prise en compte avec la réalisation que les taux de larges évènements et les évènements de large magnitude réduisent la qualité de la masse rocheuse locale et que la raideur de la masse rocheuse doit donc être adaptée. Une étude de cas est présentée pour tester des sections du protocole. Das Risikoniveau für jeden Abbauschritt wird durch die Eingabeparameter aktuellen Gesteinsmassenkondition für die Computersimulation evaluiert. Für die Seismische Aktivitäten wird Sorge getragen durch das Verständnis, daß große Ereignisraten und Ereignisse hoher Größenklassen die Qualität der lokalen Gesteinsmasse reduzieren und daß die Gesteinsmassensteifheit entsprechend adaptiert werden sollte. Eine Fallstudie um Teile des Protokolls zu testen wird präsentiert.

Discussion H. J. S. Kriek*: During 1956 Iscor became interested in the acid smelting in a blast furnace of siliceous ores containing 15 per cent silica. This interest was as a result of the successful acid smelting in Germany at a CaO/SiO2-ratio of between 0.4 and 0.8. Acid smelting can become an economic proposition due to a reduction in slag volume accompanied by a lowering of the coke rate. Paschke and Hannel1 found that a free flowing slag (i.e. viscosities of less than two poise) would not be obtained at C/S-ratios lower than 0.82 and that the addition of 3 to 4 per cent alkalies became necessary. In titanium bearing slags it was established that maximum fluidity is obtained with 10 per cent TiO2. Acid smelting resulted in increased sulphur pickup with decreasing O/S-ratio and desulphurization with soda-ash outside the blast furnace was necessary. At Iscor Mr B. B. Segal established that, for slags with (CaO+MgO)/SiO2-ratios of 0.5, 0.6 and 0.7, the addition of alkalies and TiO2 resulted in a substantial decrease in melting point and also of viscosity. At a (CaO+ MgO)/ ratio of 0.53 the addition of 10 per cent TiO2 is as effective as the addition of 3.75 per cent alkalies. This means that a blast furnace can be run without the addition of alkalies and consequently the detrimental effect of alkalies on the lining can be avoided; also that fluid slags with 5 to 15 per cent MgO and 8 to 10 per cent Al203 can be obtained with 10 per cent TiO present. (CaO+ MgO)/SiO2-ratios smaller than 0.5 the addition of titania resulted in a decrease in melting point and also in an increase in viscosity. In ceramic crucibles the slag did not become more viscous with time but thickened appreciably when held in graphite crucibles. No titanium carbonitride could be detected and only Ti20a was found. Prof Howat also did not obtain the TiC-TiN solid solution and therefore it appears that the thickening of the slag is not solely due to the formation of the titanium carbonitrides. This is in agreement with the work of Michailov and Belyakova2 who found that TiO2 decreased the viscosity of acid slags and increased the viscosity of basic slags; that titanium sesquioxide (Ti203) and titanium monoxide (TiO) increased the viscosity of both acid and basic slags and that titanium carbide, which is found in larger amounts in basic slags than in acid slags, considerably increases the viscosity of both acid and basic slags. Patzak et al3 describes the following oxygen deficient titanias, viz Ti2O, TiO, Ti203, Ti3O5, Ti4O7, Ti5O9, Ti6O11- Ti10O9,Ti7O13,Ti8O15 and Ti9O17. Until about 1959 a fair amount of data was available on the viscosity of normal slags to which titania was added2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. At Iscor an electromagnetic viscometer based on the viscometer developed by Bockris10 was built. Progress was very slow as our main attention was centred around problems associated with the operation of the Rotor process. During 1962 and 1963 two papers containing fundamental work on the viscosities of slags in the systems CaO-SiO2-TiO211 and CaO-SiO2-TiO2 at 0 per cent A1203, 10 per cent Al203 and 20 per cent Al20312 appeared. The work of Ross and Ohno obviated the necessity of any further work by Iscor on the viscosity of blast furnace slags containing titania. Ross gave the following optimum compositions for blast furnace slags containing titania. Titania % Lime % Silica % Lime/Silica-ratio 20 30-42 38-50 0.6-1.10 30 27-36 34-43 0.63-1.06 40 24-32 28-36 0.66-1.14 The optimum temperature is 1,500°C because at this temperature the largest workable composition range exists. Higher temperatures result in narrower optimum composition ranges and in increased rates of thickening. The factors affecting the rate of thickening were also investigated by Ross and Ohno, as the main problem with slags containing titania is not finding compositions which are fluid at operating temperatures but the thickening due to a lack of oxygen. With these slags when there is insufficient oxygen to co-ordinate each silicon atom with its own individual shell of four oxygen ions, some sharing of oxygen ions must occur, resulting in the formation of large silicate ions and a rise in viscosity. The formation of oxygen deficient titania can be prevented as long as iron oxide or manganese oxide remain in the liquid slag. Iwase13 and also Viens, Camp bell and Rogers14 obtained in the experimental smelting of ilmenite ores fluid slags with more than 3 to 5 per cent manganese oxide and ferrous oxide in the slags. It appears that titaniferous ores can be smelted in blast furnaces under the following conditions: (1) Acid slag operation, i.e. at C/S-ratios from O.6-1.0. (2) Dolomite can be used as a flux as MgO is a network modifier. (3) The Al2O3-content must be less than 15 per cent as alumina promotes thickening of the slag and decreases the optimum composition range. (4) The hearth temperature must not exceed 1,500°C. Implementing new technologies in industrial operations entails the challenge of measuring the improvements gained by the applied technology. Nevertheless, it is absolutely essential to assess the technical and economic benefits in objective and comprehensible numbers to create a platform for further management decisions. Underground coal mines are characterized by numerous, quite complex procedures which make it difficult to determine the specific economic benefit of a new machine, technique, or method. In the OPTI-MINE Project funded by the European Union?s RFCS programme, five underground coal mines applied the latest information and communication technologies (ICTs) to improve efficiency, mine safety, occupational health, and environmental im-pacts. An integral part of the project is the assessment of these technologies by using key performance indicators (KPIs). The paper will describe some examples of the selected KPIs and the preliminary findings.

A new preparation scheme for a difficult-to-float coking coal from the Kailuan Mine, Tangshan, China was investigated. The results showed that grinding followed by column flotation was beneficial for obtaining products with low ash content. The positive effect of grinding on the coal floatability is attributed to the liberation of intergrowths and coal surface improvement. Tests indicated that 10 minutes was the optimum grinding time, and over grinding resulted in a deterioration in flotation performance. With a grinding time of 10 minutes, conventional flotation had potential to yield a product with around 12.42% ash content and 69.15% combustible recovery. Column flotation can reduce the product ash content to 11.15%and increase combustible recovery to 74.47%. Consistently better flotation results reveal that column flotation is more efficient than conventional flotation for such fines.

Control of flotation processes is mostly managed by plant operators, who assess the performance of the plant based on their own experience and other heuristic rules. These rules tend to be subjective or ill-defined, since most of them are concerned with the structure of the flotation froth, such as colour, bubble size and shape distributions, froth mobility and froth stability. These phenomena are very difficult to quantify objectively, and inexperience on the part of the operators, human error, etc., can lead to significant inefficiencies in plant operation. In this paper the development of a fuzzy system to support the control decisions of plant operators is described, which leads to significantly smoother control action and more stable plant operation than could be obtained with crisp sets of rules or manual control strategies. Consideration is also given to the sinking of single and twin declines using diesel equipment, calculating the air volumes required to dilute pollutants and the various methods for achieving this. Also discussed is the importance of having early ventilation design input to the overall design of the mine. In many cases ventilation can be the prime determinant for the size and configuration of the shafts or declines that have to be sunk.

An unprecedented expansion of the global zinc industry is currently under way. While most new projects and plant upgrades remain committed to traditional processing technologies, recent advances in zinc solvent extraction (SX) have created opportunities for new process routes for both primary and secondary materials. The first commercial plant to use zinc SX for the mainstream processing of a low-grade ore is under construction and promises to become one of the lowest cost zinc producers. Several other oxide and sulphide projects in various stages of feasibility are considering the inclusion of SX in their process flowsheet. Zinc SX has also proved advantageous in the reprocessing of secondary materials, particularly for the treatment of zinc residues and furnace dusts. This review focuses on recent installations and projects underdevelopment that feature zinc SZ as the key separation step.

Methods for the prediction of seepage quality from waste-disposal facilities are evaluated for input to the design of desalination treatment facilities. This is done by reference to a waste dump seeping into a near-surface aquifer, the contaminated seepage being collected by scavenger wells. As the quality of contaminated water intercepted by the wells will vary with both space and time, it is necessary for predictive methods to accommodate such variations. One-dimensional and two-dimensional predictive solute transport models are described and applied to the seepage and scavenger-well example mentioned above. The advantages and disadvantages, interims of overall applicability, data requirements, and possible accuracy, are described and discussed. While one-dimensional models have the advantages of speed, simplicity, and cost, the frequent requirement of prediction in both space and time necessitates more complex, two-dimensional simulation.

Because of problems encountered with conventional timber supports, a system of concrete sausageshaped support pillars was tested. The pillars are 3 m long, 0,6 m wide, and between 70 and 80 cm high (the height of the stoping width). They consist of bags filled with a grout of cement (slagment and sand in the ratio of I :2, and are installed in a staggered pattern 6 m apart on dip and 2 m apart on strike. These support packs have proved successful, and, although they cost more than the timber supports formerly used (R4,63 per cent are supported as against R2,26 for the conventional timber pack), their use is felt to be justified when account is taken of the costs of lost production and low productivity due to the bad hangingwall conditions that occurred with the conventional system.

Alternative procedures for the recovery of gold from old sand dumps are discussed, with emphasis on the use of heap leaching. The modification of material to improve its permeability prior to heap leaching is not currently receiving much attention in South Africa. The channeling of solutions through heaps and the high consumption of reagents sometimes ascribed to heap leaching can, as shown by the results described in this paper, be lessened by desliming of the sand prior to heap leaching and the treatment of the resulting slimes fraction by agitation leaching and carbon-in-pulp. This combined procedure results in a higher overal recovery of gold. Alternatively, the sand can be heap-leached as it is after agglomeration with lime and cement, which improves the mixing and neutralization of the material, as well as lessening the probability of channeling.

By use of models based on the South African gold-mining industry, analyses are made of the effects of changes in the mining tax structure on the .State's tax income from potential new mines; also on the percentage of such mines likely. to be proceeded with. The percentage is affected by the correlation between changes in taxation and in the flotation pay limits !or new mines. It is shown that the State stands to gain both directly and indirectly from raising the level of the capital allowance and from its extension to all mines; and that the reduced taxation resulting from a lowering of the discriminatory high tax formula for the gold mines, would, in respect of potential new mines, be compensated for by a significant increase in the percentage of such mines that would be proceeded with.

Tech.). Natal (Member) The de-watering, spray drying, and converter operations at Impala are described, aspects that may be new to the minerals industry in South Africa being elaborated. Air-pollution control necessitated the installation of a sulphuric acid plant to limit the emission of sulphur dioxide to the atmosphere. Closer control of the smelting and converting operations was required for successful operation of the acid plant on the inherently Iow and varied concentration of feed gas from converter blowing. Approximately 82 per cent of the sulphur entering the smelter is converted to sulphur dioxide, of which 67 per cent is fed into the sulphuric acid plant.

In situ leaching tests with thiourea as the lixiviant were caried out in two worked-out stopes at the No. 6 shaft at Rand Leases Gold Mining Company. Dissolution rates of 0,9 and 0,7 9 of gold per week per 100 m2 of footwal area were achieved. A major disadvantage of the method seems to be the slow rate of dissolution of the gold, which is probably caused by poor contact and slow mass transfer between the lixiviant and the gold surfaces. Under full-scale application, the loss of lixiviant by leakage could also be a very important factor. Furthermore, the oxidation products of thiourea may 'poison' the activated carbon that is used for the recovery of the gold. The method may therefore be economically viable only in stopes that contain high values of residual gold.
