Gerhardus Paulus Badenhorst passed away on 2nd December, 1989. Badie, as he was known to all, will be missed by his many friends and colleagues, and will be remembered by al who knew him as a warm-hearted person who was totally dedicated to the safety and health of the workers in the mining industry.

The SAG Milling Seminar, which was held at Murdoch University in Perth on 30th November and 1st December, 1989, was a very successful technical seminar. Organizer Dr Norm Stockton reported a total attendance of 130, which was higher than the 70 expected: 20 delegates came from the eastern States and the remainder were from Western Australia.

The youngest technical programme committee of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy- that on Physical Metallurgy - held its second colloquium on 18th September, 1984. The topic of 'Corrosion of Piping and Tubing in the Mining Industry' was very appropriate since the date had been chosen to coincide with that of the Electra Mining Exhibition.

The first annual student prizegiving function of the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy was held in the Dorothy Susskind Auditorium, University of the Witwatersrand, on Thursday, 26th May, 1977. The address (see opposite page) was given by Dr M. G. Atmore, a director of Anglo American Corporation and Vice-President of the Institute.

The Annual General Meeting of the Orange Free State Branch was held on Wednesday evening, 30th July, 1986, in the VIP Lounge of the Freegold North Region Canteen. The meeting was well attended, a total of 73 members, guests, and visitors being present. It was extremely pleasing to have such a large number of lady visitors present.

The 'doorstopper' technique for determining the state of stress in rock requires that the stress concentration factors at the flat end of a borehole be known. Published values of these factors are widely variant. An axisymmetric finite element analysis of this problem has been made, yielding elastic stress concentration factors for different values of Poisson's ratio.

Models of cone crushers and vibrating screens are described. These models have been constructed from actual plant data using a systematic model-building technique. Included in this technique is regression analysis using multi-dimensional spline functions. The models have been used too simulate complete crushing plants and hence to design and evaluate a control system for crushing plants.

The aim of this investigation is the evaluation of optimising the Shahroud copper ore beneficiation plant near the Iranian city of Shahroud, by means of a sensor-based ore sorter applying X-ray transmission technology. Currently, this plant’s feed capacity of 52t/h produces 0.5t/h copper concentrate with a grade of 30% and copper recovery of 85% from a feed grade of 0.36%. By applying an X-ray transmission-based (XRT) sorter, it is possible to preconcentrate the feed and remove the gangue materials before entering the plant, enabling the production rate of concentrate to be increased. In this study, the obtained representative sample from the plant was preconcentrated in particle size of - 75+10mm by using the X-ray sorter, thus the concentrate with Cu grade of 0.85% was obtained. Therefore, by using of X-ray sorter the Cu grade of plant feed was increased to 0.48%. By increasing the feed grade from 0.36% to 0.48%, and considering a Cu recovery of 85%, the production rate will be increased from 0.48t/h to 0.61t/h. Therefore, the preconcentration by using the XRT sorter increases the production rate by 27%. Keywords: Optimisation, preconcentration, copper, X-ray, sensor-based ore sorting

Eccentric High Pressure Centrifugal Comminution (eHPCC) is a novel comminution device that provides a single step to achieve a desired target grind size. The mechanisms within the unit mirror particle breakage that is akin to high-pressure-grinding rolls (HPGR) and high-intensity-attrition with air classification. eHPCC receives lump and can produce a product P80 such that the progeny are at or less than natural grain size of the feed. The unit operates in either closed or open-circuit. The grinding zone is dry and free of steel grinding media. This paper presents evidence of eHPCC-2 capable of selective and preferential mineral liberation. A recent test campaign on a blend of underground quartzgold- vein ore was completed. The feed to eHPCC-2 trial was SAG mill trommel oversize (low-grade pebble rejects). eHPCC-2 operated open-circuit with air-fluidisation in the rotating-grinding-chamber, classifying particles based on terminal velocity of the air-swept product particles, displaying size and mineral composition classification taking place at the same time. There is an opportunity for future industrial research targeting eHPCC as an advanced integrated comminution and classification technology. It is interesting to note that, when the Technical Programme Committee-Mining first decided on this particular topic for a colloquium, the proposed title was different in that it used the words 'rising price of gold'. The very fact that the title was reworded to use the words 'fluctuating gold price' highlights the problem that faces the South African gold-mining industry.

These include the stoping of isolated pillars, the reduction of the size of shaft pillars, the stoping of a new horizon above or below a horizon that has already been stoped out, and the mining of thick bands of reef left behind in the footwall or hanging wall.
