Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B.Sc. Eng (Mining Engineering) degree Engineering refers to the application of mathematics and other sciences to logically develop solutions to problems. However, in opencast mining, due to the randomness of operations, the use of mathematics is often neglected. Instead, practices that have proven successful elsewhere tend to apply. At the other end of the scale, mathematical models have been developed to identify and quantify all the operational parameters involved in the loading and haulage of ore. These are then used to optimize the operation. Optimization in this context, refers to the reduction of cost through effective utilization of the available time and resources. Considering these mathematical models, the loading and transport system at SMC (Catoca Mining Society) will be assessed with a view to its optimization. The discussion will be introduced by considering the mine background and other general information, which will highlight the main operational variables.

Increased contamination due to sand in spiral feed has had a negative effect on the efficiency of spiral concentrators at Navigation Plant. The no. 1 seam at Kromdraai opencast, which was previously mined by underground bord and pillar methods, is now susceptible to spontaneous combustion because of air ingress into the old workings which are exposed in the opencast high wall. This posed a risk in the loss of reserves to burnt coal. As solutions, buffer blasting of the preceding cut to collapse bords and soft overburden dressing of un-collapsed bords were implemented to prevent air entering the workings. The latter remedy resulted in increased contamination due to addition of sand in Run of Mine. After evaluating alternatives, a low capital option was selected. The 110t/hr Teetered Bed Separator (TBS) has been installed, primarily to desand and upgrade the feed to the spiral concentrators. The unit indicated an upgrade with a yield increase of 0.4% during test work and is currently showing an overall plant yield increase of 0.97%.

Particular attention was to be paid to the transportation of men and materials and to the broken rock and ventilation capacity of the shaft. This project is an in-depth evaluation of the logistic capacity of the sub-decline system at Turffontein Shaft in order to determine by how much production can be increased in this area to replace tonnages from the vertical shaft area, where ore reserves are rapidly becoming depleted.

The authors developed the TBM Excavation Control System (the TBM Navigator), in order to realize the advanced observational construction. During the excavation using this system, the rock strength value is immediately calculated from the TBM driving data as an index of rock properties, and the drill energy coefficient is also calculated from the drill logging data that is carried out using the probe hole ahead of the tunnel face. In this study, a new, geostatistical simulation-based method is proposed for the automatic prediction of the rock properties ahead of the tunnel face with good precision, using both the drill logging data and the TBM driving data. The applicability of this method is validated through the prediction at the actual tunnel excavation that passes through the faults. Les auteurs ont mis au point un Système de Contrôle de forage avec la machine à pleine section (Navigateur de la machine à pleine section), en vue de réaliser un système de surveillance plus efficace. Avec ce système, la résistance de la roche est immédiatement calculée, au cours du forage, à partir des données de conduite de la machine, comme indice des propriétés de la roche, et le coefficient d'énergie de la foreuse est également calculé à partir des données de log de forage collectées dans un trou de sonde foré dans le front de taille. Dans cette étude, on propose une nouvelle méthode basée sur la simulation géostatistique qui permet de prévoir d’une manière automatique, des propriétés de roches se trouvant derrière le front de taille avec une précision satisfaisante, à l’aide des données de log de forage et celles de conduite de la machine à pleine section. Cette méthode s’est avérée suffisamment précise au cours du forage d’un tunnel réel qui traversait une zone de failles. Die Autoren entwickelten das TBM Ausschachtungssteuerungssystem (den TBM Navigator), um noch besser überwachte Bauarbeiten zu ermöglichen. Unter Einsatz dieses Systems wird die Gesteinsfestigkeit während der Ausschachtungsarbeiten unmittelbar aus den TBM Antriebsdaten als ein Index für die Gesteinseigenschaften berechnet. Gleichzeitig wird auch der Bohrenergiekoeffizient aus den Bohrlogdaten berechnet, die an Hand der Probebohrung am Stirnende des Tunnels erhalten wurden. In der vorliegenden Studie wurde ein neuartiges, auf geostatistischen Methoden basierendes Verfahren für die automatische und angemessen genaue Vorhersage der Gesteinseigenschaften am Stirnende des Tunnels vorgeschlagen, für das sowohl die Bohrlogdaten als auch die TBM Antriebsdaten verwendet werden. Die Anwendbarkeit dieser Methode wird durch die Vorhersage bei einer tatsächlichen, durch Verwerfungen verlaufenden Tunnelausschachtung bewiesen.

Platinum metal was first utilized by the Inca civilization in South America where it was found in alluvial deposits along the San Juan and Atrato rivers that lie between the Andean mountain range in Colombia and the Pacific Ocean. The nuggets found in these rivers average between 77% and 86%platinum, 7%?8% iron and small amounts of copper, gold and other Platinum Group Metals (PGMs). The Incas often alloyed platinum with copper to increase its workability and fabricated various ornaments from it.

The reaction between carbon and slags is of significant importance in direct smelting of iron ores, EAF slag foaming and copper slag cleaning processes. This reaction is known to occur via gaseous intermediates and it is important to have fundamental data to understand the relative importance of each reaction step. In this study, the rate of CO2dissociation on different slag surfaces is measured using an isotope exchange technique. It was found that increasing iron oxide content up to 30 wt per cent does not have a significant effect on the rate constant while increasing from this limit, increases the rate constant dramatically. Activation energy of CO2dissociation on slags of unit basicity and different iron oxide contents is in the range of 180±40 kJ/mol. It is found that rate constant dependence on oxygen potential in the slag phase is increasing with iron oxide concentration. In the case of copper making slags, the influence of copper oxide is found to increase the magnitude of apparent rate constant, while decreasing the activation energy considerably. Namakwa Sands is a heavy minerals mining and beneficiation business in the Anglo Base Metals Division, and operates along the West Coast of South Africa. The business encompasses mining, mineral concentration, separation, and smelting operations. The smelting process comprises the carbonaceous reduction of ilmenite to produce titania slag with a TiO2 content of 86%, and iron with a carbon content of 2.5%. The Namakwa Sands smelter, situated near the Saldanha Bay harbour, commenced smelting operations in 1994, when a 25 MW DC-arc furnace was commissioned. The smelting operations were expanded in 1999, with the commissioning of a second 35 MW DC-arc furnace. Despite the fact that ilmenite smelting poses a technical challenge in terms of the high temperatures required, the physical characteristics of the slag, the constraints placed on the feedstock, and the tight product specifications, Namakwa Sands has continually increased slag production since 1995. High furnace feed-on utilization and furnace stability, complemented by continuous improvement drives, will be thevehicle to drive performance in the short-term, with longer-term performance enhancements due to strategic process development. Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, furnace, DC, reverse polarity, dual-electrode The dual-electrode direct current (DC) arc furnace uses two graphite electrodes, one connected as cathode, and one as anode. Such an arrangement avoids some of the design difficulties associated with the anode hearth traditionally used in single electrode and twin-cathode DC furnaces, but can introduce other design and operational difficulties including deflection of the arcs toward the furnace walls. Counter-intuitively, both arc jets in a dual-electrode furnace travel from the electrode down to the bath surface, despite carrying electric current in opposite directions ? this is suggested in the theory of the governing equations of arc formation, and confirmed by experiments using high-speed photography. The dual-electrode arc system at small pilot-plant scale is studied using a transient magneto-hydrodynamic model capable of predicting arc deflection and interaction from first principles, and the results are compared to the behaviour of twin-cathode systems at similar power. Finally, a simple arrangement of the furnace busbars, M configuration, is shown to provide some passive protection against arc deflection.

When the slope angles of the southern side of the Venetia open pit were required to be flattened by some 20 degrees after an analysis completed by De Beers geotechnical engineering in conjunction with SRK, the additional waste stripping tonnage generated was in the order of some 70 million tons. The potential cost of having to move this tonnage had a significantly negative effect on the Net Present Value of Venetia Mine, challenging the viability of the third pushback and rendering a potential fourth pushback completely uneconomic. This paper details some of the innovation that went into the design and planning process undertaken to virtually negate the instantaneous effect of the flattened slope angles and the associated waste tonnage as well as further improve the NPV of Venetia Mine and bring the fourth pushback back into economic viability. This process has become known as NPV+ and is anon going exercise in waste reduction/deferment and revenue advancement.

Open pit slope design has conventionally been effected as a bottom-up function utilizing available geotechnical information. This results in a decision criterion based on probability of failure and factor of Safety with a risk assessment being carried out on the proposed design slopes. The design approach recommended reverses the process using fault event tree decision methodology. The consequences of this approach are that acceptable risk criteria have to be determined by mine owners. Slopes are then designed by the technical staff to achieve these corporate goals. Benefits that arise from the process are that the owners take a proactive decision on the risk-benefit relationship allowing the technical staff to optimize the geotechnical exploration programme and design.

The aim of this investigation was to reduce the cost of primary steel de-oxidation by substitution of aluminium primary de-oxidation with a practice that uses carbon. The cost of carbon is four times lower than that of aluminium. The application of carbon would directly result in raw material cost savings. Investigations were conducted at Iscor?s Newcastle steel plant on various steel grades. Specific production aspects were emphasized to ensure that the cost savings accrued would not create secondary expenses. These production aspects entailed: ?Yields on de-oxidation elements ?De-oxidation capabilities ?Alloying yields (Mn and Si) ?Carbon-pickup ?Nitrogen-pickup ?Temperature loss during tap ?Steel cleanliness ?Slag morphology. This project proved that carbon de-oxidation, apart from reducing de-oxidation raw material cost due to cheaper raw materials being used and lower consumption rates, resulted in steel that is cleaner and has lower nitrogen concentrations. Carbon primary de-oxidation has been implemented at Iscor?s Newcastle plant on a large range of steel grades, ranging from ultra-high carbon (> 0.60% C) to ultra-low carbon (< 0.03% C) grades. A net saving of between R100 000 and R200 000 per month was achieved.

Toll and custom treatment of base metal concentrates have been performed for decades as mines and concentrators are developed distant from capital and, energy-intensive smelting and refining facilities. Commercial treatment terms have been developed and refined for over a century, and are negotiated taking into account a complex array of quality and economic factors. Treatment of third-party concentrates in the South African platinum industry is a comparatively recent development, brought about by the opening up of mineral rights and operations being developed that are smaller than the critical size required to sustain capitalization of smelting or refining plant. Published commercial terms have not been demonstrated to reflect the complexities and subtleties of base metal concentrate markets. This paper outlines some key elements and parameter ranges of base metal concentrate treatment contracts, and applies similar principles to typical Merensky and UG2 platinum group element (PGE) concentrates to determine potential value distribution between the mining and treatment parties in tolling arrangements.

ABSTRACT: Although individually both continuum and discontinuum numerical analyses provide useful means to analyze rock slope stability problems, complex failures typically involve mechanisms related to both existing discontinuities (i.e. discontinuum) and deformation and brittle fracture of intact rock (i.e. continuum). One such example is the 1991 Randa rockslide in the southwestern Swiss Alps, where failure involved several complex mechanisms, which require the consideration of progressive failure and rock mass strength degradation. This paper presents results from a series of hybrid finite-/discrete-element models directed towards the explicit modelling of brittle fracturing in natural rock slopes, enabling the modelling of progressive failure, from initiation, through to the development of catastrophic failure, transport and deposition. RÉSUMÉ: Si les modélisations numériques de type continu ou discontinu fournissent des outils utiles pour l’analyse de problèmes de stabilité de pentes rocheuses, elles montrent de sérieuses limitations lorsque des mécanismes de rupture complexes impliquent des processus liés autant aux discontinuités préexistantes qu’au développement progressif de nouvelles fractures. Ceci se retrouve typiquement dans l’exemple de l’éboulement de 1991 à Randa dans les Alpes suisses du sud-ouest, où la rupture a impliqué plusieurs mécanismes complexes nécessitant la prise en considération de la fracturation progressive ainsi que de la dégradation de la résistance des masses rocheuses. Cet article présente des résultats provisoires d&apos;une série de modèles hybrides orientés vers la modélisation explicite de la fracturation de pentes naturelles, permettant la modélisation de fractures progressive de leur initiation jusqu’à leur développement, leur rupture catastrophique, leur transport et leur déposition. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Obwohl numerische Kontinuum- und Diskontinuum-Berechnungen einzeln nützliche Ergebnisse zur Stabilitätsanalyse von Felshängen liefern, sind komplexe Felsrutschungen typischerweise mit Mechanismen verbunden, die sowohl durch bestehende Trennflächen (s.a. Diskontinuum-Ansatz) als auch durch die Deformation und das Versagen intakter Felsbereiche (s.a. Kontinuum-Ansatz) bedingt werden. Ein Beispiel für einen solchen Sachverhalt ist der Bergsturz von Randa 1991 im südwestlichen Teil der Schweizer Alpen, bei dem die Rutschung mehrere komplexe Mechanismen umfasste, so dass “progressive failure” und Verminderung der Gebirgsfestigkeit in Betracht gezogen werden müssen. Dieser Artikel beschreibt vorläufige Ergebnisse einer Reihe von hybriden Modellrechnungen (Finite-/Diskrete-Elemente). Diese haben zum Ziel, explizit das bruchhafte Versagen natürlicher Felshänge zu modellieren, wobei das progressives Versagen im ganzen modelliert wird, von der Anfangsphase über die Entwicklung zum katastrophalen Versagen und den Transport und die Ablagerung der Rutschmassen.

In their excellent paper, Milev and Spottiswoode have provided quantitative and definitive descriptions of an important phenomenon that hitherto has been largely the subject of conjecture. They convincingly show that ?site-response? can amplify the strong ground motions on the rock-wall of a stressed tunnel by a factor of 10 to 12 compared with the PPV in the solid rock mass (at the same distance from source). This knowledge gives us a firm foundation from which to begin to build an understanding of the mechanism of damage resulting from a rock burst. Regrettably this understanding is still far from adequate, in my opinion. The authors of this paper, however, have made some statements that are too reassuring and which tend to reinforce the sense of complacency that prevails among many members of the rock engineering community on the deep gold mines.

This is a sampling of the papers presented at the conference, the proceedings can be bought from the SAIMM Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) computational techniques allow treatment of gases, liquids and solids in the same simulation. ALE methods include the ability to treat shock waves in gases, liquids and solids and the interaction of shock waves with each other and with media from one of the other categories. ALE codes can also treat explosive detonation and the expansion of the explosive gases and their interaction with air and solids. ALEGRA is a 3-D ALE code that has been developed at Sandia National Laboratories over the past few years. ALEGRA has been applied to a 2-D simulation of presplitting using decoupled explosives in rock blasting with very interesting results. The detonation of the explosive at the bottom of the hole sends a shock wave up the borehole driven by the explosive gas expanding into air. The explosive gas compresses the air against the stemming column where it rebounds and recompresses at the bottom of the borehole. This type of ringing takes several cycles to damp out. The explosively induced expansion of the borehole is also treated by ALEGRA as well as the shock wave imparted to the rock. The presentation of this paper will include several computer animations to aid in understanding this complex phenomenon.

Strainbursts are common in overstressed brittle rock around deep mine openings. Such failures are characterized by a biaxial state of stress in the plane of the opening boundary. A zone of compressive stresses imposes initial failures near or at the surface of the opening that results in spalling of thin slabs of rock roughly parallel to the free face. While the failure of rock under biaxial loading conditions is increasingly common in deep underground mines, only a few representative laboratory studies have been reported in the literature, without emphasis on rockbursting aspects, and none in the last decade. This paper presents the results of a testing program on a granite rock type. Biaxial testing, conducted on 100 mm cubic samples, was carried out to examine the influence of lateral confinement and loading rate on the rock’s ultimate strength. The paper reports the test results in terms of normalized biaxial failure envelope s1/sc-s2/sc. A discussion of the failure mechanisms observed is presented. Les coups de toits de déformations sont choses communes dans le rock cassant surcontraint en place autour des ouvertures minières profondes. De telles ruptures sont caractérisées par un état de contraintes biaxiales dans le plan de la périphérie de l’ouverture. Une zone de contraintes compressives impose des ruptures initiales à ou près de la surface de l’ouverture, qui produit des relâchements de minces plaques de roc plus ou moins parallel à la surface. Bien que les ruptures de roc sous des conditions biaxiales sont de plus en plus communes dans les mines à grandes profondeurs, il n’y a eu que quelques études représentatives en laboratoire de publiées, sans emphase sur des aspects de coups de terrains, et aucunes publiées depuis la dernière décennie. L’article présente les résultats d’une campagne d’essais appliquée à un type de granit. La campagne d’essais biaxiaux, sur des échantillons cubiques de 100 mm, avait pour objectif d’examiner l’influence du confinement latéral et le taux de chargement sur la résistance ultime du roc. Cet article fait part des résultats en terme de l’enveloppe de rupture biaxiale normalisée s1/sc-s2/sc. Une discussion sur les mécanismes de ruptures observés est présentée. Dehnungsbrüche findet man häufig in übergespannten spröden Felsen um die Öffnung von tiefen Minen. Solche Brüche sind von einer zweiachsigen Spannung in der Ebene der Grenze der Öffnung charakterisiert. Eine Zone von Druckspannungen verursacht initiale Brüche, entweder an der Öberflache der Öffnung oder in der Nähe. Davon scheiden sich dünne Felsplatten mehr oder weniger parallele mit der freien Wand. Obwohl Felsbrüche unter zweiachsiger Beanspruchung immer mehr häufig in tiefen Minen beobachtet sind, hat man über nur einige repräsentative Laborversuche in der Literatur berichtet. Diese Studien diskutieren das Thema ohne Betonung auf Felsbrüchen, und keine sind in den letzten zehn Jahren erschienen. Die vorliegene Arbeit gibt die Ergebnisse eines Testprogramms auf einem Typ von Granitfels. Durch zweiachsige Prüfungen von kubischen Proben mit Seitenlangen von 100 mm sollte man den Einfluss von seitlicher Ermittlung und der Beanspruchungsrate auf die Bruchfestigkeit des Felsen studieren. Man findet auch die Prüfergebnisse in bezug auf das normalisierte, zweiachsige Bruchkriterium s1/sc-s2/sc. Die beobachteten Bruchmechanismen sind auch diskutiert.

This paper presents the results of a study focussed on determining the distribution of cobalt in different types of pyrite of the La Estrella IOCG deposit in Chile. In the IOCG mineral deposits, where copper is the main product, the quantification and distribution of cobalt is required to correctly define the technical and economic viability of recovering cobalt as a by-product. In the La Estrella mineral deposit, seven alteration and mineralisation events were recognised through both optical and automated electronic mineralogical analysis. Of these seven events, five different types of pyrites were identified, each with unique characteristics of the pyrite crystals. Through advanced elemental analysis of these five types of pyrites, it was determined that the concentration and distribution of cobalt within the pyrite crystal is dependent on the mineralisation event. The results indicate high cobalt concentrations in the early pyrite mineralisation events, associated with relatively fine pyrite grains, and cobalt generally occurring in a solid form in the pyrite core. The late pyrite mineralisation event exhibits the lowest concentrations of cobalt, with cobalt predominantly present along the outer periphery of the pyrite. These results are relevant from a metallurgical point of view because the preferential location of cobalt within the pyrite crystal will influence the maximum metallurgical recovery of cobalt. For this, a cobaltiferous pyrite concentrate must be formed which, according to the characteristics of pyrite, must be processed with the optimal solubilisation method. The overall objective is to ensure both good cobalt recovery and a high concentration of cobalt in the leach solution resulting from pyrite leaching. The aim of this investigation is the evaluation of optimising the Shahroud copper ore beneficiation plant near the Iranian city of Shahroud, by means of a sensor-based ore sorter applying X-ray transmission technology. Currently, this plant’s feed capacity of 52t/h produces 0.5t/h copper concentrate with a grade of 30% and copper recovery of 85% from a feed grade of 0.36%. By applying an X-ray transmission-based (XRT) sorter, it is possible to preconcentrate the feed and remove the gangue materials before entering the plant, enabling the production rate of concentrate to be increased. In this study, the obtained representative sample from the plant was preconcentrated in particle size of - 75+10mm by using the X-ray sorter, thus the concentrate with Cu grade of 0.85% was obtained. Therefore, by using of X-ray sorter the Cu grade of plant feed was increased to 0.48%. By increasing the feed grade from 0.36% to 0.48%, and considering a Cu recovery of 85%, the production rate will be increased from 0.48t/h to 0.61t/h.
