The stability of pillars is analysed on the assumption that pillars shed load in a stable manner if the slope the strata load-deformation relation is steeper than that of pillars in the post-peak regime. Concepts of local stiffness, mine structural stiffness, and critical stiffness are discussed. Procedures are described for the determination of strata stiffness for various pillar layouts by use of the available boundary-element computer programs. The postpeak stiffness of pillars is assessed from the available data relating to the post-peak load-deformation relationship and width-to-height ratio. Stability analyses are carried out by the contrasting of strata stiffness with post-peak pillar stiffness. It is shown that the strata stiffness becomes unacceptably small for a stable yield-pillar layout when the span exceeds about 5 times the depth. The strata stiffness is found to increase, thereby increasing the stability, as the span-to-depth ratio, number of pillars, and percentage extraction are decreased. It is also found that the stability in a yield pillar becomes difficult to achieve when al the pillars in a layout are in the descending part their post-peak load-deformation curve

A generalization of Gy?s 1979 model for the variance of the fundamental sampling error has been proposed at WCSB2?2005 by Geelhoed. This generalized model can potentially lead to a better correspondence with actual sampling processes. However, a new parameter is required by the new model: ?the parameter for the dependent selection of particles?(Cij). It is important that this new parameter, which is at the basis of the new theory, is well understood in the sampling and blending community. In order to clarify the meaning of Cijand to prevent potential misinterpretation of Cij, we discuss the difference between Cij and an intuitively associated, but different, parameter: ?the parameter for the dependent selection of particle types?(Mij). In this contribution, the theoretical difference between both parameters is clarified. Simulations demonstrate that, numerically, the difference between Cij and Mij can be large. Some additional advantages of the approach which uses Cij are discussed: (i) the approach based on Cijis more general; (ii) in all cases where Mij is known, Cij can be determined as well, while the reverse is not true; (iii) an equation already exists that relates the sample variance to the value of Cij.

The prediction of rock properties from indirect testing methods is important, particularly for preliminary investigations since indirect tests are easier and cheaper than the direct tests. In this study, we investigate the predictability of the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and Brazilian tensile strength (BTS) of rocks from the indentation hardness index (IHI) obtained using point load apparatus. Forty-six different rock types, 14 of which were igneous, 15 were metamorphic, and 17 were sedimentary were tested in the laboratory. The UCS and BTS values were correlated with the corresponding IHI values and the results were statistically analysed. The influence of rock classes on the relationships was also investigated. A strong correlation between UCS and IHI was found for all data. The correlation between BTS and IHI is not as strong as the correlation between UCS and IHI. However, it is in the acceptable limits. When the regression analyses were repeated for igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks, the correlation coefficients were generally increased. The results show the UCS and BTS can be estimated from IHI. In addition, the effect of rock classes on the relationships between IHI and both UCS and BTS is important.

Production caving started for Lift 2 at Northparkes in August 2004. In a period of less than 3 months, more than 10 000 seismic events were recorded. Events up to local magnitude +2.9 were induced near the mine during caving, with event rates of up to 500 per day. This paper documents the seismicity related to cave initiation and cave propagation during the initial production of Lift 2. The seismogenic zone of events initially moved at a rate of about 0.5 metres per day, accelerating to 2 to 3 metres per day after a few months of cave production. Seismic data analysis infers that the crown pillar between Lift 1 and Lift 2 was destressed over a vertical height of about 100 metres. As the seismogenic zone approached the crown pillar, a macroseismic episode occurred, with more than 20 events of at least local magnitude +1 occurring in a two-week period. Based on the seismicity recorded for Lift 2 at Northparkes Mines, a caving mechanics model is proposed. Comments and suggestions are made for seismic data analysis and design of seismic monitoring systems in block caving mines.

Occupational illnesses and diseases tend to be chronic and are generally characterized by temporary or permanent physical dysfunction. With the exception of some symptoms, they are not generally visible. Therefore, safety overrides health in mining because occupational ailments take years to develop and management observes less physical trauma, if they witness anything at all. Occupational health issues need to be addressed systematically, encompassing all aspects of the interaction of employees within the work environment. Risk assessment is central to the management of occupational health. This should not be seen as a complex process and may involve little more than simply considering the consequences of one?s actions before starting work. Competent risk assessment provides the starting point and defines the scope of further action. The objectives and final use of an occupational health risk assessment determine the process and the method by which it is carried out. The occupational health risk assessment is therefore a systematic procedure to identify potential health hazards, evaluate the extent of exposure subjectively and/or objectively, and to establish the need for, and effectiveness of existing control measures. Furthermore, it facilitates the drafting of occupational exposure monitoring, medical surveillance and occupational health education programmes. Various models for conducting occupational health risk assessment provide step-by-step guidance for the identification and assessment of significant occupational health hazards and assist in producing suitable and significant occupational health risk assessments. The paper gives an overview of an occupational health risk assessment model based on the basic principles of occupational health and the legislative requirements, which will simplify the occupational health risk assessment process and ensure a sound base for the development of all other occupational health systems.

In a first for the diamond industry, Koffiefontein Mine in the Free State, South Africa, opted for the front cave mining method to extract a 90 metre high block of kimberlite ore. Block caving, because of its high initial capital requirements, resulting in a negative internal rate of return (IRR),was ruled out as a feasible mining method for Koffiefontein Mine. Front caving is essentially a combination of the traditional block cave and sub-level cave mining methods, but uses two or more levels of retreating drawpoints. Two extraction levels, in the case of Koffiefontein Mine, are spaced 12 m apart vertically, with the upper 478 m level (48Level) acting as the undercut/extraction level, and the lower 490 m level (49 Level) as the extraction level. Caving is achieved by undercutting a small column of ore, which is then drawn, on both the 48 and 49 Levels, until the planned extraction percentage is achieved. The next column of ore is then mined by advancing the undercut (48 Level), and the process is repeated until the entire ore block is depleted to the contact. Caving-by-gravity techniques of mining rely on closely controlled draw of the caved ore to ensure proper caving action and to minimize the dilution of ore with waste material from the open pit. This paper discusses the need for, and implementation of, a draw control system at Koffiefontein Mine — a computerized production management system, and a draw control system based on linear programming, to allow control over the draw rate and mining sequence — a major factor in all production planning to optimize production efficiency, ore recovery and cave management. The issue of evaluating the economic impact of large mineral projects in developing countries was studied by the use of econometric models. The evaluating system is demonstrated by its application to an example from Namibia. Three-dimensional graphics are used to illustrate the procedures leading to an assessment of the economic effects of the mineral development. The analysis allows the assessment of the overall economic consequences of mineral developments where there is a need to incorporate in the evaluation issues that are broader in scope than the pure financial objectives. Sets of technical coefficients are exploited for the development of input-output models of the productive structure of an economy. The models are refined to incorporate country-specific behaviours. The increased flexibility of the enhanced semi-input-output model permits a more confident investigation of the economy wide effects associated with a new project in the mineral sector of a developing country. Synthetic measures of profitability at market and shadow prices are introduced, and the cost/benefit ratio is used to rank mineral projects according to their economic profitability. The cost is the capital mobilized for the development of the project and for increasing the productive capacity of the related satellite industries. The benefits are identified with the economy-wide increase in value added induced by the project. 80th costs and benefits are initially valued at market prices. Their ratio is likely to be an index of economic profitability superior to measures that concentrate exclusively on the benefit side of projects. To allow for market distortions, the concept of shadow prices is introduced, and accordingly project-related costs and benefits are re-evaluated. A new cost/benefit ratio at shadow prices is recalculated, which is more meaningful to the policy-maker than decision-making based on socio-economic issues.

This study was aimed at a comparison of the efectiveness of a new axial-flow type of mixer impeller (the Prochem design) with the traditional inclined-blade turbine. The intended application of the mixers was in carbon-in-pulp plants for the extraction of gold from cyanide-leached pulps. The first part of the project involved water and ion-exchange resin, and measurement of the power drawn by the various sizes of impeller to fully suspend the resin. The rate of reaction between the resin and the solution was measured as a function of the power input to the mixer. In the second part of the project, use was made of activated carbon, silver cyanide solutions, and ore pulps. The rate of absorption of silver from the solutions and pulps was determined, as well as the rate of attrition of the activated carbon caused by the various impellers in clear water. The Prochem design of axial-flow impeller was shown to fully suspend solids at only one-quarter of the power requireabyan inclined-blade turbine of similar size. The axial-flow pattern produced was responsible for the more uniform vertical concentration profile of suspended beads produced by the Prochem design. These measurements verified the observations of other researchers that the rate of reaction is not affected by the ;design of impeller provided that al the solids are fully suspended. The Prochem design of impeller therefore achieved the same reaction rate as the conventional turbine at a quarter of the power input. The atrition rates of activated carbon could be correlated, in terms of the energy absorbed, by the same equation for al the impellers. Higher concentrations of activated carbon increased the amount of carbon fines produced. These results emphasize the importance of designing mixers for minimum power consumption.

Activated carbons used in the precious metals extraction industry are characterized by large internal surface areas and a great affinity for metal ions. The purpose of this research is to prepare activated carbon from a South African bituminous coal by physical activation that is suitable and cost-effective for use in the extraction of metals. The quality of the coal-based activated carbon may not prove to be as good as activated carbon produced from other traditional sources, but the production costs involved may make South African coal a feasible alternative feedstock. The activated carbons produced were characterized by Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller (BET) surface area, activated carbon pH, and phenol adsorption studies and the results compared to the results from a commercially available activated carbon, Norit RO 0.8 (control sample). Bituminous coals from various sources including Witbank Seam 4 and Free State coal were used in this study. The preparation method chosen was physical activation using superheated steam. The effects of process variables such as activation time (1-3 h) and temperature (600-800°C) were studied in order to optimize those parameters. The activated carbon surface area was characterized by means of nitrogen adsorption isotherms at 77K. BET surface area analysis showed that Witbank Seam 4 coal activated at a temperature of 800°C and activation time of 3 hours resulted in a surface area of 340 m2/g. Quality control of each sample was performed by measuring the pH of a known amount of the prepared activated carbon in distilled water over time. Results showed that the pH of some of the prepared activated carbons reached a value of 11. Phenol adsorption results for the different activated carbons prepared corresponded well to the results obtained for the Norit RO 0.8 activated carbon sample.

"The complexity of copper-gold ores leads to large variations in recoveries and concentrate grades in the processing plant. Detailed chemical and mineralogical studies revealed considerable variation in the ratios of chalcopyrite, chalcocite, and oxidized copper minerals in the ore types studied. The end-member ore types are chalcopyrite-dominated and chalcocite-dominated, while most of the ore types plot between these end-members. In addition, increasing amounts of copper oxide and sulphate minerals result in a decreased response to flotation. Good recoveries and concentrate grades can be achieved from the chalcopyritedominated ore type, while the more altered chalcocite-dominated ore type is more challenging to enrich. IntroductionRich Metals Group (RMG) Copper in Georgia (Figure 1) produces copper-gold concentrates from two open pit mines, Madneuli and Sakdrisi, both located in the Bolnisi mining district in South Georgia. RMG and Outotec began a cooperative project with the aim of improving the recoveries and metal grades in concentrate by gaining an increased understanding of the ore variability and developing more efficient procedures for ore blending, grinding, and flotation. This type of mineralogy-led approach has already been used for other complex ores such as iron oxide copper-gold ores (Hunt, Berry, and Bradshaw, 2011), for iron ores (Lund, Lamberg, and Lindberg, 2013), and for Kupferschiefer ore deposits (Rahfeld et al., 2018).The project started with process audits and mineralogical and chemical characterization of process samples, followed by detailed chemical and mineralogical characterization of six different ore types with simultaneous flotation test work on the same samples. Since neither the recoveries nor the concentrate grades correlate with the head grades of the ores, the modal mineralogical composition, together with the ore hardness, proved to be the most promising approach in developing the geometallurgical classification of these ore types."

"A number of conventional and advanced analytical techniques (proximate and ultimate analysis, low-temperature oxygen-plasma ashing, X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, coal petrography, and lightelement electron microprobe analysis) have been integrated and crosschecked to provide detailed characterization of coals from the Highveld coalfield in South Africa, as a basis for better understanding of the mineralogical and chemical properties of the individual coal sources that are blended as feedstocks for combustion and carbon conversion processes. The techniques included methods to quantify the abundance and composition of the mineral matter (minerals and non-mineral inorganic elements), and also the abundance and chemical composition of the individual macerals in the individual coals concerned.Kaolinite is the most abundant of the minerals in the coals studied, with lesser but still significant proportions of quartz, mica and/or illite, dolomite, calcite, and pyrite. Small but variable proportions of anatase, goyazite, and siderite are present in some coal samples. Electron microprobe analysis, based on a special configuration for light-element study, shows that the vitrinite contains less carbon and more oxygen, and has significantly higher concentrations of nitrogen and organic sulphur, than the inertinite macerals in the same samples. Minor proportions of organically-associated inorganic elements, including titanium, were also identified in some of the maceral components.A comprehensive knowledge of the minerals and non-mineral inorganic elements in the coals used for feedstock preparation, obtained by integration of data from these advanced analytical techniques with more conventional analyses, may be of benefit in understanding the processes that take place during coal utilization, and also in avoiding or ameliorating some of the operational and environmental problems that may occur in different sectors of the coal utilization industry."

The theory of geostatistics covers a branch of .applied statistics aimed at a mathematical description and analysis of geological observations. Geostatistics can be used in pure geology (for example, for the analysis of trace elements in a metamorphic rock), in mineral exploration (for example, for the analysis of geochemical exploration data), as well as in mine valuation. This book is intended to provide a practical introduction to the theory of geostatistical methods of mineral evaluation. Over the years, various mathematical models have been developed to represent the distribution of values in mineral deposits. The simpler models are based on the assumption that the values are randomly distributed. Classical statistical methods, based on this assumption of the random distribution of values, are used to analyse mineral deposits to which these models apply or are assumed to apply. In all mineral deposits, however, one recognizes the presence of areas where the values are higher or lower than elsewhere. Also, the values of two samples in a mineral deposit are more likely to be similar if the samples are taken close together than if they are taken far apart. This indicates that there exists a degree of correlation between sample values, and that this correlation is a function of the distance between the samples. Models have been developed which take this correlation into consideration, with the degree of correlation between sample values being usually measured by the semivariogram function. In these models the fact that two samples taken next to each other will most probably not have the same value, must also be considered; even for very short distances the correlations are usually not perfect and a purely random component is present in the value distribution. The mathematical models will therefore assume the presence of two sources of variability in the values: a correlated component and a random component. Finally, one must consider the particular and very common case of mineral deposits in which the values present a systematic variation in space. This variation is usually referred to as a drift, or a trend. For example, the grade of an ore body may increase with depth of the ore, or it may decrease when one moves away from a central volcanic pipe. The earlier models did not give a satisfactory representation of drifts, and more complex models have been developed, in which three sources of variation are represented. These models are made up of: a deterministic component, a correlated component, and a random component. The deterministic component is used as a model of the drift. The correlated component explains regular changes in values which are not represented by the drift. The random component represents variations which cannot be explained by any of the above factors. The simpler models, based on the assumption of a single random component, will be described first (Chapter 2). The models based on the hypothesis of the superimposition of a correlated component on a random component, will then be analysed in detail. These models are most commonly used in the analysis of mineral deposits (Chapters 3-1 I). Finally, how to deal with the presence of a drift will be briefly described (Chapter 12). This book has been written essentially for students in mining engineering and for mining engineers who are interested in the background to the theory of geostatistics as well as its practical applications. The assumption is made that the reader has an elementary knowledge of statistics. Some knowledge of linear algebra is useful in part of Chapter 9, and is necessary to read Chapter 12. A proof is given of all the equations related to geostatistics, and which are not usually found in elementary textbooks on statistics. Understanding of these proofs is not necessary for practical application of the theory, and the reader may wish to skip them on a first reading, concentrating attention on the numerous simple practical examples given. Although the theoretical geostatistician will not find much new material in this publication, it is anticipated that he will develop some interest in the practical approach chosen to prove the various geostatistical equations. Many people and institutions contributed to the preparation and completion of this work. I am much indebted to Dr D. G. Krige and the Anglo Transvaal Consolidated In- vestment Company Limited, who gave me the opportunity to spend a considerable amount of time working on geostatistical problems, both theoretical and practical, during the time that I was in their employment. Keywords: Sphalerite, Bio leaching, Chemical leaching Sphalerite concentrates were prepared from tailings dam samples obtained from Rosh Pinah Mine in Namibia. The samples were subjected to froth flotation and concentrates containing between 7% and 14% Zn were prepared. Leaching of these froth flotation concentrates were studied in ferric chloride solutions at different Fe3+ concentrations for different times at different temperatures with the influence of other species on the kinetics in mind. Complementary to this research, GeoBiotics, LLC and Exxaro Resources have developed proprietary bioleaching technology for the oxidation of base metals concentrates using GEOCOAT bio heap leaching technology in a sulphate medium. The ferric chloride laboratory work was performed in a fluidising leach reactor. The studied material was obtained from flotation concentrate produced during an investigation into the recoverability of a tailings pile at Rosh Pinah mine in Namibia. The optimum conditions for the laboratory investigation were found to be a Fe3+ concentration of 0.3 mol/dm3 at 80°C. A control was performed by using synthetic zinc sulphide. GEOCOAT evaluation tests are performed for the purpose of evaluating the bioleaching of ore and flotation concentrates by means of mesophilic bacteria, Column tests were carried out on the flotation scavenger concentrate from Rosh Pinah to assess the application of the GEOCOAT® process for the oxidation of a low grade zinc concentrate. In this study an attempt was made to demonstrate the relationship between the Kinetic models and the experimental data by plotting the fraction of Zinc leached against time and applying the different equations to the data. The kinetic models were applied to the data obtained from both the test regimes. Habashi (1999) proposed that if a process is controlled by a chemical reaction at the interface (phase boundary controlled reaction), the following equation applies. kCt =1 ? (1-R) 1/3 Alternatively a process is controlled by diffusion through the product layer the following equation applies: [kt = 1 23- X (1 ? X) 2/3] As the anodic dissolution reaction progresses, reaction product forms either a more or less dense reaction product layer on surface As this product layer forms, a diffusion problem develops governed by the nature of the product layer. The conclusion from the study was that the kinetics is very dependent on the type of ore processed relating to the mineral composition of the ore body.

The First International Symposium on Seismicity in Mines, organized by the South African National Group on Rock Mechanics in collaboration with the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, was held in Randburg (near Johannesburg) from 13th to 17th September, 1982. It was the first attempt to provide an international forum for the consideration of seismic problems specifically affecting mines or associated with mining. Numerical mathematics The South African Society for Numerical Mathematics and the Computer Science Department of the University of Natal are organizing the Ninth Symposium on Numerical Mathematics to be held in Durban from 18th to 20th July, 1983.

As you pointed out, furnace power factor (and consequently transformer MVA rating) depends upon the inductive reactance, and so it is desirable to design for the lowest possible value of this parameter. The further introduction on the primary side of the transformer of capacitors, whether in shunt or in series, increases the network power factor but does not alter the furnace power factor; that is, the phase angle between electrode to- hearth voltage and current remains unchanged. The Alusaf aluminium smelter at Richards Bay by H. T. KAISER, B.Sc. (Pta), M.B.L. (Unisa) (Visitor) and P. DE WAAL, B.Sc., B.lng. (Mech.) (Stell.) (Visitor) A description is given of the aluminium smelter at Richards Bay, which operates on the Hall-Heroult electrolysis principle. The annual output of metal (average 99,7 per cent aluminium) is approximately 7S 000 tons. Since its commissioning in 1971, the plant has fulfilled South Africa's total demand for low-alloy rolling slabs, extrusion billets, remelt ingots, and electrical conductor rod. The plant layout allows for sufficient expansion of its capacity to meet longterm increases in demand.
