The evolution of thermodynamic models of molten salts and slags, starting with Temkin in 1948, has culminated in today?s sublattice models. These modern models have permitted the development of large thermodynamic databases of model parameters, which can be used to calculate and predict accurately the properties of multicomponent solutions. The model parameters are mainly obtained by the critical evaluation and optimization of available thermodynamic and phase equilibrium data for binary and ternary subsystems. The models are then used to estimate the properties of multi component slags and salts from these assessed binary and ternary parameters. When used in conjunction with thermodynamic databases for solids and solid solutions (salts, oxides, sulphides, metals, etc.), other liquid solutions (such as liquid metals),and gases, these databases permit the calculation of complex multiphase equilibria in multicomponent systems, with applications in a wide variety of industries. These calculations can be performed with general commercial software for Gibbs energy minimization, which can also be incorporated into process simulation software packages. Not all the recommendations made by the various commissions are recorded here, but those which are included highlight the fact that many of the problems that plagued the industry during those years, whether economic or labour matters, are still troubling the industry today.

"SynopsisThis paper is intended to document recent personal thoughts, opinions, and debate around the South African Code for the Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves (the SAMREC Code) (2009) and its current usage by Competent Persons. Admittedly, some debates are as old as the SAMREC Code itself and have been ‘parked’ as no consensus could be reached by members of the SAMREC Working Group.Some of the more critical issues currently under examination are the definition of Competent Person and the potential registration of Competent Persons, the current re-write of the Code, and the introduction of reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources, and Mineral Reserves on an ‘If not – why not’ basis, noncompliance with the Code and discipline, the role of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange Readers Panel, and the valuation of mineral assets based on scoping studies.IntroductionThis paper is intended as a personal memoir of recent thoughts and debate around the South African Code for the Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves (the SAMREC Code) (2009) (‘the Code’). Admittedly, some debates, such as reporting of Mineral Reserves inclusive or exclusive of the Mineral Resource, are as old as the SAMREC Code itself and have been ‘parked’ as no consensus could be reached by members of the South African Mineral Resource Committee (SAMREC) Working Group. The author, who has been involved with the SAMREC Working Group since 2007, offers observations in his personal capacity as a professional mining engineer with the intent of getting practitioners to contemplate the influence of the Code on the mineral industry. Current practices in the compilation and reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources, and Mineral Reserves are often deficient in adhering to the Code and a conscious effort must be made by the mining sector to improve the standard of public reporting, in particular Competent Person Reports (CPRs) and Public Reports issued by listed mineral exploration and mining companies."

Ferroalloys like FeCr and FeMn are mostly produced in submerged electric arc furnaces. Typical for these processes is that the amount of slag is quite high. The role of slag for the process is thus very essential and specific chemical, physical and electrical properties are required. Slags in FeCr process are Al2O3-MgO-SiO2based with minor contents of CaO and CrOx. Slags in FeMn process are principally similar originating from silicate minerals but can have quite a large composition range depending on the manganese ore and its gangue minerals. Characteristic for FeMn process is that the slag is rich in manganese oxide up to above 30%. A common feature is that the ?ore oxides?, CrOx and MnOxin slag are not only divalent oxides but also containing some higher valent of Cr3+ and Mn3+, respectively. In FeMn production conditions the slag consists mainlyMn2+. This is a clear difference from CrOx containing slags in which both two and three valent coexists in slags in FeCr process conditions. Oxidation state of the slag depends on the ambient oxygen partial pressure and temperature in the examined process. Thermodynamics of slags in ferroalloys production are discussed in terms of phase diagrams, activities and oxidation state of chromium and manganese oxides. Further, slag properties influencing reduction kinetics and furnace operation i.e. viscosity and electrical resistivity are discussed. Underground depillaring of contiguous coal seams/sections is a difficult problem, which becomes even more complex if the interburden/parting between them is thin. Conventionally, the depillaring with caving of contiguous seams/sections is done in descending order. However, if the parting is thin, the influence of the top sections/seams working over the standing pillars of bottom the sections/seams becomes extremely important for the safety and optimal exploitation of coal. Field investigations were carried out at Nowrozabad East mine where superimposed pillars of the Johilla top section were depillared above the developed pillars of the Johilla bottom section with a 3 m thick parting between the two sections. The competency of the 3 m thick parting (which consists of alternate layers of shale, sandstone and shaly sandstone) was improved by reinforcement (underpinning). The strata control investigations did not show any considerable instability problem of the 3 m thick reinforced parting and pillars of the bottom section due to top section depillaring. On the basis of this field investigation and a laboratory study on simulated models, simultaneous extraction of both the sections, along with reinforcement of the parting, was suggested for the geomining conditions of the Johilla top and bottom sections. Adopting the suggested simultaneous depillaring process, two sub panels of Johilla top and bottom sections have successfully been extracted without any strata control problem. This paper presents this case study along with the results of the strata monitoring conducted to evaluate performance of the underground structures during the field trial.

Cokriging uses a sparsely sampled, but accurate and precise primary dataset, together with a more abundant secondary data-set, for example grades in a polymetallic orebody, containing both error and bias, to provide improved results compared to estimation with the primary data alone, as well as filtering the error and mitigating the effects of conditional bias. The method described here may also be applied in polymetallic orebodies and in other cases where the primary and secondary data could be collocated, and one of the data-sets need not be biased, unreliable, etc. An artificially created reference data-set of 512 lognormally distributed precious metal grades sampled at 25×25 m intervals constitutes the primary data-set. A secondary data-set on a 10×10 m grid comprising 3200 samples drawn from the reference data-set includes 30 per cent error and 1.5 multiplicative bias on each measurement. The primary and secondary non-collocated data-sets are statistically described and compared to the reference data-set. Variograms based on the primary data-set are modelled and used in the kriging of 10×10 m blocks using the 25×25 m and 50×50 m data grids for comparison against the results of the cokriged estimation. A linear model of coregionalization (LMC) is established using the primary and secondary data-sets and cokriging using both data-sets is shown to be a significant improvement over kriging with the primary data-set alone. The effects of the error and bias are filtered and removed during the cokriging estimation procedure. Thus cokriging using the more abundant secondary data, even though it contains error and bias, significantly improves the estimation of recoverable reserves.

Bauxite residue known as red mud (RM) is a by-product produced in massive quantities during alumina production by the Bayer process with a utilisation rate of less than 5%. A large amount of RM accumulated and produced continuously has had a seriously adverse impact on the surrounding ecological environment. The application of RM in building materials is considered to be the most effective and thorough way to make RM harmless and recycle resources for the reason that adding RM to concrete as a mineral admixture could not only consume a lot of RM, but also save cement and other energy-consuming industrial products. In this paper, the adaptability to cement and aggregate of RM was studied. The results showed that the compressive strength and flexural strength of concrete using ordinary Portland cement, slag Portland cement or fly ash Portland cement as cementing material showed different trends with the increase of the amount of RM. The influence rules of RM on the compressive strength of Portland cement, slag Portland cement and fly ash Portland cement concrete were similar, whether for silicate aggregate or carbonate aggregate. RM has a negative correlation to the flexural strength of silicate aggregate-ordinary Portland cement concrete, but a positive correlation to silicate aggregate-slag Portland cement, silicate aggregate-fly ash Portland Cement. RM promoted the formation of calcium carbonate crystals and inhibited the formation of ettringite and calcium hydroxide crystals in the matrix while ordinary Portland cement, Portland cement and fly ash Portland cement were used as cementing materials. This study provided support for the use of RM in concrete, the reduction of solid waste storage, and the saving of high energy consumption cement as well. The mechanized mining cycle using loaders and shuttle cars had it speak in terms of usage in the mining industry during 1950 through 1960. In Brazil, this system is still used at underground coal mines in southern Santa Catarina coal basin. With the aim of investigating the benefits of a new mining scheme using the room and pillar method for these local mines, a computational simulator model was developed in order to investigate the mining cycle. This paper presents the methodology used to develop the simulator and the results that the simulation shows regarding impact of the proposed new scheme on mining productivity.

This paper introduces the multi fractal interpolation method (MIM)developed for handling singularities in data analysis and for data interpolation. The MIM is a new moving average model for spatial mapping and interpolation. The model decomposes the raw data into two components: singular and nonsingular components. The former can be characterized by a localized singularity index that quantifies the scaling invariance property of measures from a multifractal point of view. The latter is a smooth component that can be estimated using ordinary kriging or other moving average models. The local singularity index characterizes the concave/convex properties of the neighbourhood values. The paper utilizes a binomial multiplicative cascade model todemonstrate the generation of one- and two-dimensional data with multi-scale singularities which can be modelled by asymmetrical multifractal distribution. It then introduces a generalized moving average mathematical model for analysing and interpolating data with singularities. Finally, it is demonstrated by a one-dimensional case study of de Wijs’ data from a profile in a zinc mine, that incorporation of spatial association and singularity can improve the interpolation result, especially for observed values with significant singularities.

Small replacements of C12-trithiocarbonate (C12-TTC) for dithiocarbonate (DTC)/dithiophosphate (DTP) in a reagent suite for the flotation of platinum group metals (PGM) have significantly improved the rejection of gangue. Coupled to this is an improvement in kinetics, grade and recovery of PGMs. In a pilot-plant trial, after a 5 mole per cent replacement of the current DTC/DTP collector combination by C12-TTC, large opaque bubbles were replaced by small clear ones. In addition, a similar flotation response was realized with one-third of the current depressant dosage. During a preliminary plant trial on underground UG2 ore, the initial rougher concentrates were characterized by higher PGM concentrate grades and this was in part due to improved chromiter ejection. The concentrate produced from the TTC trial also exhibited a much finer particle size distribution. The overall circuit performance, which included secondary regrind and flotation, showed an increase in concentrate grade of approximately 44% while the tailings grade remained unchanged

Blaine number has long been used to evaluate the pelletising ability of iron concentrate in the industry. Much information and practical data are available about the effect of Blaine number on pelletising efficiency of different concentrate types. But not many researchers have focused on the effect of Blaine increasing method on pelletising behaviour of coarse concentrates. In this paper the effect of two different grinding methods (i.e. HPGR and Ball Mill) on physicochemical properties of coarse magnetic concentrate green and fired pellets were investigated. Microstructural studies by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM) showed that the concentrate for which the Blaine number had been increased through HPGR grinding, has flake-like morphology. In contrast, increasing the Blaine number through ball mill grinding results in more granular particles. Two samples were prepared using HPGR and ball mill. The Blaine number of the HPGR product and ball mill product were 900 cm2.gr-1 and 1200 cm2.gr-1 respectively. The results revealed that pellet properties of this HPGR product are comparable to that of the ball mill product; this is due to the fact that the flake-like morphology leads to enhanced pelletising performance of coarse magnetite concentrates. The influence of two weeks of microclimate cooling on the state of heat acclimatization by N. B. STRYDOM, M.Sc., Ph.D. (Illinois) (Fellow), A. J. S. BENADE, M.Sc. (Potch.) (Visitor), and W. H. VAN DER WALT, B.Sc. (Potch.) (Visitor) Five volunteer Black subjects were acclimatized according to the climatic-room acclimatization procedure, and their states of heat acclimatization were determined by the usual heat-stress test. The subjects thereafter wore pre-frozen jackets in a somewhat higher environmental temperature (33,9/35,6 °C). stepping at the same rate as before for four hours a day for fourteen days. The heat-stress test was repeated and followed by a similar test at the higher environmental temperature. It was found that fourteen days of microclimate cooling in a very hot environment had no adverse effect on the degree of heat acclimatization. The sweat rates during microclimate cooling remained high, even though no sweating is possible beneath the pre-frozen ice-jacket. which indicates that there is an increase in sweat rate from the areas of exposed skin.
